I make Nat sound like such a terrible person on here, and they are, but I'm half worried that talking about the story from an objective perspective so much sort of ruins the fun of reading it - that being, I am deliberately telling the story from Nat's perspective.

What I want to do with Twin Suns is break down some of the lines between abuser and victim. I want to write that dynamic as what it is, a dynamic between two people, behaviors that you can fall into. That anyone can fall into! I want to write is as explicitly not something that you ontologically are, that in one case taints you to your core, and in the other absolves you of all possible responsibility.

I'm even hesitant to use the word abuser here because it's so loaded!! It's an abusive relationship that I'm writing, but Nat and Ron are also friends, and Ron is also a dick on occasion, and Nat is also somebody who has been deeply, deeply failed by everyone around them from day one, who knows that they are in the hole but cannot begin to understand how to climb out, who is so scared of losing others that they just make it worse and worse and worse.

I've given earlier iterations to people to read a few times now, and I really love the reactions in retrospect, although in the moment they've often driven me crazy. When a friend read an argument between Nat and Ron out loud, they defaulted to making him sound angry and threatening, and Nat small and docile! Because of gender roles, likely, Nat is bigender but reads as very fem, and Ron is agender but reads as a guy, or because of missing context, and also almost definitely because it's a role Nat takes very frequently, both to protect themself and because they genuinely feel threatened in their very existence.

Another friend read Ron running away without telling Nat that he was leaving after an argument, and called him a rat for it, even with context! It's fascinating stuff! And he wasn't even explicitly black in that iteration yet!!!

So uh. Hi. This is Ally (or some may know me as Haru, but I mainly go by Ally in here), and I draw! Mostly just gijinkas/OC arts, other times I reblog shitposts or post my rhythm games stuff. born and raised in town with all of their beliefs and customs. never a fully rebellious child to it all, but never a full conservative either. curious mind above all, making her own ideas on things as she grows old will stress her family to no ends.

in a town not that populous compared to the tales of the capital she hears from her parents, there is a sense of feeling trapped that settles inside. on the lookout for some freedom, it's not long before she finds somewhere within the surrounding trees to escape from her duties. in and out before their family could get suspicious of haru not following their strict set of rules, it is their hideout. their perfect place.

until it's not theirs anymore, and someone had seem to claim it for their own as well. always with a wave of confrontation in their step, it's not long for their storm to dissipate at the sight of one ceridwen wynne-jones.

the one person she'd been constantly remembered and warned to stay away from for years after the other was old enough to enter the school. forbidden to approach her in a courtyard — no set of rules or guidance were laid for an off - trail hideaway.

friendship blooms in the sways of leaves, and her hideout spot becomes theirs, and for a few years the secrecy of it holds strong. secrecy her brother is allowed into, for he noticed the longer outings and the longer - lasting smile on his sibling's features. a warning is head, although much tamer than their parents. he doesn't trust the other, but trusts haru. leaves it to her judgement, simply to be careful.

and that carefulness turns into recklessness, a slip up in schedule shines a light on the little guise. haru's family is far from pleased. not only did she disobey, but she lied and outright shamed her family by associating with ceri.

contact stops, friendship forcefully halted. for months she endures the pain of not grabbing what is within reach, shivering at the ice she has to engulf herself in whenever her best friend tries to get near.

pain that she'll soon find out to be nothing next to the one at the horizon. there is an accident in a factory that claims her brother's life. he'd only just gotten in a few months ago. the news broke for a second only that another comes along. it might have not been an accident at all. it might have all been the doing of a single person. and all the warnings and forbidden contact starts to make sense. timing all too close for it to be a coincidence as well. the whispers turn into a louder voice, coming not only from the remaining household members, but from deep in the shadow of her room.

there has always been a presence felt near, though she never paid it any mind. imagination easily running high, there was never a reason to think it was anything but the delusions of a tired mind. that fateful night, however, there was no denying it. the power of the words reverberating through their skull makes tears dry, silent sobs falling instead at the realization and validation ; ceri is the source of the tragedy.

affirmation this sentient shadow will not stop repeating, fire it won't allow to die out. a mantra hammering itself in her head has the baek's pack up bag to leave cynefin behind. her mother won't stand a minute longer in a town with a that child — unbeknownst to her that her own remaining one had gotten latched onto by something far, far worse.

rakan, she'll soon call it, after a pact had been agreed upon blinded by loss and grief. these creatures know something mortals don't ; power. such was recognized in haru, untapped talent so potent it hurt the demon to think of it unused. training hadn't been started, verum never in the baek's cards. their affinity to khemia is, however, undeniable. why else would the entity so set on a contract. why else whisper sweet promises of revenge and never being powerless again if raw power wasn't already on the table.

she wishes she could learn quick, away from the prying eyes of a broken family. a lamb draped over by a wolf, here's the first domino to a long, long, long chain.

years passed, and someone that resembles a grown haru has resurfaced along the streets of cynefin. or so people think. in and out to finalize a new trade post, a shadow is left behind the spot where people think they saw her again. that is until the sighting stays permanent. not by choice, but by landslide.

tl;dr — familiar driven, bent on revenge fractured soul that plans to nurture the chaos that recently set itself over cynefin to use it for their own personal gain on their years long vendetta in the making.

I wanna make intro posts for them soon, but i think i ll do that when i finish their sekai fits fullbody drawings. For now here s some basic info bout em under the cut:

Group of outcasts and troublemakers somehow end up in eachothers lives and start making music together, to convey the feelings they can't vocalise.

Mayumi - He's an aloof boy that doesn't listen to anyone and is difficult to converse with due to his weird, roundabout way of conversing with people, if he replies to you at all. He loves fashion and music, spends a lot of time trying out different instruments but he has an electric guitar at home that he plays often. Oh and he usually wears his hair behind his ears and no band aid, but he has a lot of piercings and doesn't wanna get in trouble at school, because it'd be a nuisance.

Ayase - Ray of sunshine that won't stop can't stop- but despite being so friendly and easy to get along with, he doesn't seem to have many friends. He always gets in trouble for breaking the unform code.

Haru - Transfer student with infinite confidence that doesn't back down from a fight. He's chill for the most part, as he doesn't really speak, ever- but if you try to fuck with him you will regret it. Got expelled from his previous school for various things like skipping class very often, breaking uniform code, fighting students and teachers, and generally being a menace.

Yuuta - World's largest chiuwawa. Is scared of everything and everyone, and has a stutter. He doesn't actually attend school irl, his anxiety turning him into a shut in- but in his free time he loves going around town and doing grafitti. He makes double triple sure nobody will see him though, because if he gets caught he will probably combust and die. Grafitti is the only thing that's worth the anxiety to him though.

Their whole story as a group is finding reasons to keep trying- as all of them have given up, in one way or another.

When the world is collapsing around you... Whose hand will you take?

It appears that whoever is asking this question is lighting a mesmer match, and blows it out just before we transition to the character select screen. The voice actor feels to me like the MC's, implying she could be asking this question of and using the match on herself.

Since Ancient times, humans have gathered around fires, fearing the fall of an eternal night. Yet they cannot help but peer into the shadows that hide in old places and pool in empty streets. Foolishly they yearn for it-- For the unknown that lies beyond the edge of darkness.

As this text plays the MC is running through a burning building that seems like it is the school's main hallway.

Why Machi and Yuki just make sense together (but I still love Yukeru and YukiKyo)

(Just look at how Yuki smiles when they're together! Gah!!!!)

So I've written about Yuki pairings before, and I've been pretty open about both my undying love for Yuchi AND my enjoyment of two of the other frequent Yuki pairings, Yukeru and YukiKyo.

As I've been doing more analysis, especially the Enneagram series (which isn't finished btw!), I've started to realize that Yuchi was written and set up almost as well as Kyoru, and the only reason it's harder to see is because Yuki's arc is distinctly non-romantic.

I'm currently working on an analysis of his arc over the course of the story, and romance just isn't really a factor in his arc beyond him rejecting compulsory romance with Tohru. In fact, the people who share the biggest emotional and plot beats with him are Tohru, Kyo, Akito, Haru, and Kakeru (in no particular order). I'll come back to this in a bit.

So if Yuki doesn't really have a romance arc, what makes him and Machi such a good match?

Well, going back to my Enneagram posts about them, Yuki is a SP 4w3, and Machi is a SP 3w4. They're mirrors of each other.

In my intro to the Enneagram post, I shared each type's core fear and core desire. Here are 3 and 4:

Core desire (3): to be loved for who they are, to be valuable and worthwhile

Core fear (3): being worthless, insignificant; failure

Core desire (4): to be seen and loved for who they are

Core fear (4): having no personal identity or significance, being flawed and missing out on some basic aspect of happiness that other people have access to

What Yuki and Machi each want most is for someone to love them for who they truly are. Yuki (largely due to Akito's abuse, but also the erasure of his friends' memories, Ayame's indifference, his mother's coldness, and Kyo's hatred of him) believes people wouldn't want to know him if he showed his true self because of his perceived defects. And Machi (due to the successorship battle, her mother's insults and demands of perfection, and her parents' bad faith reading of her actions) believes she's failed at the role laid out for her and lacks any value or significance.

Because Yuki is a bit further on in his personal growth than Machi when they meet, he sees her struggle and recognizes it, giving Machi the thing she most needs as an achievement-oriented 3 when he praises her simply for being who she is ("You've worked hard to become the Machi you are today.").

And because that moment was so transformative for Machi, she sees and recognizes Yuki's inner kindness, giving him the thing he most needs as an identity-concerned 4 when she tells him it took someone like him to notice someone like her.

I often see people argue that Yuki's relationship with Machi isn't mutual; that he gives and she takes. I also see people argue that Yuki's relationships with Tohru, Haru, and Kakeru aren't mutual; that they give and Yuki takes. I firmly disagree with both of these assessments, but I think Yuki himself would only disagree with the first.

Beginning with Machi, there are the obvious ways she contributes to their relationship, like when she rescued him from the storage room, and there are the moderately obvious ways, like when he overheard her saying that he's not like a prince and he seems lonely (thus showing that she understands him). But Yuki also needed to feel significant to someone the way he felt to Machi. He needed someone to figure out.

This makes sense for him as a 4. Since being seen and loved for himself is the thing Yuki wants most deeply, it's also what he thinks "giving" means in a relationship. Kyo could read Tohru in a way Yuki never could, and that made him feel inferior. He tried "competing" with Kyo for Tohru, because he thought that was what he was expected to do, but it wasn't what he truly wanted. Kakeru and Haru have already been through their most relevant growth by the time the series starts, so Yuki doesn't feel like he has anything to contribute to their relationships (even though he was the impetus for Haru's growth many years ago).

But Yuki did help his friends, and often. He was the one who offered Tohru a room in the house he shared with Shigure. He helped Tohru study. He checked on Haru after he was suspended and independently decided to try and talk to Rin on his behalf. He helped Kakeru be more empathetic and experienced alongside him some of the things they missed out on in their childhoods.

And it needs to be said that his friendship with Tohru, Haru, and Kakeru mattered at least as much to them as it did to him. Tohru was so lonely, and Yuki was the first close friend she made after her mother died. Haru was angry all the time until Yuki challenged some of the family's prejudice about him. Kakeru, like Yuki, didn't really get to have a normal childhood, including the silly shenanigans that kids get up to with their friends.

So, going back to the statement I made above, that Yuki shares his most significant story beats with Kakeru, Akito, Tohru, Kyo, and Haru, this is part of what makes Yukeru and YukiKyo such rich pairings to explore.

You could argue that Yuki has 3 "coming out" scenes in Fruits Basket. There's the one where he tells Kakeru how he really feels about Tohru, taking place at the third plot point. There's the one where he tells Kyo how he really feels about him, which occurs at the climax. And there's the one where he tells Tohru how he really feels about her, in the resolution.

Some of it has to do with the content of these scenes. In Kakeru's and Tohru's, he's admitting he doesn't see Tohru romantically, even though he initially felt like he should.

It's touching that Kakeru is the first person he opens up to about this. It speaks to their closeness and the fact that they're on similar journeys reclaiming some of the childhood that was stolen from them. And it certainly has a gay subtext (is it even subtext if he literally comes out of a closet in this scene?).

And as for Kyo, Yuki's admiration could easily be read as infatuation. The fact that they've been misunderstanding each other this whole time when they really have this huge thing in common would be a great basis for the start of a relationship.

In contrast, Yuki doesn't really have much of an arc with Machi. He's responsible for many (all?) of her most emotional story beats, but the parts of Yuki's actual arc that shine are moments like the ones I mentioned above, or when Haru talks to him at his story midpoint after he finds Rin near the house, or when he and Tohru see the shooting stars and he begins to internally accept his feelings toward her.

So, each of these characters plays a role in Yuki's arc. Tohru is the catalyst, Haru the mentor, Akito the shadow, Kyo the antagonist, Kakeru the sidekick, and Machi the love interest.

Machi sort of exists within Yuki's story as a vehicle for him to show his growth. As he gets more comfortable with himself, he takes her by the hand so she can walk the same path as him.

I've said before that I think his arc would've been satisfying without him ending up in a relationship at the end, and I still think that's true. Romance is not really a part of his trajectory beyond rejecting it with Tohru.

But I really, really love him with Machi, and it was satisfying in a different way to see how all the growing he did throughout the story allowed him to be just who she needed, and how she, in turn, was exactly who he needed, too.

hero name: Haru quirk: blood manipulation I can control my own blood, whether inside or outside my body, manipulating it like waterbending. I can make it as fluid as water or as solid as metal, and I can alter its temperature and state at will. By increasing my blood pressure, I temporarily boost my strength and speed. To use my blood externally, I must first inflict a wound, but I can reabsorb and recycle it. I can only control another person’s blood through physical contact and up to 1 liter, but if I consume their blood, I can control it remotely and in larger amounts, mainly using this for blood clotting. I'll talk about my Quirk in depth in another post ^^

autistic coding in fruits basket

Intro

I am autistic, and I tend to get attached to media that I feel represented by. Perhaps that is why I gravitate so strongly to Furuba. While I don’t think it was intentional on Natsuki Takaya’s part, I do think she did a wonderful job of coincidentally creating characters that feel like they are on the spectrum. The name Fruits Basket and the allegory it’s referring to actually mirrors that of an autistic person in a way. I remember reading the background behind “Fruits Basket” and Tohru’s precious mascot, the onigiri, as well as watching the scene describing it in the anime. It immediately resonated with me.

From being singled out as the only one to not fit in the fruit basket, to not realizing that that isolation was teasing, this embodies my autistic experience so seamlessly. An onigiri who doesn't go in a fruit basket.

Tohru

While I'd like to touch on a few other characters as well, I'll keep the theme of Tohru's autistic coding and start with one of Takaya's answers to an interview question, pictured in the Official Cat Fanbook.

A unique personality and perspective paired with hyper-empathy are qualities carried by many autistic individuals, including myself! There have been many studies linking both lower levels of empathy as well as contrastingly overwhelming levels of empathy in autistic people, such as what Tohru displays. Another fun tidbit, is that we also tend to have more empathy towards animals, which in the context of Furuba makes sense haha ^^

I've seen people argue about Tohru's polite language not being related to autism because it originated from her trying to help her mom who was grieving over Katsuya, but aside from the fact that linguistic differences like more verbose and complex are indeed a trait of autism so is echolalia and mimicry of other's speech patterns!

While these are brief instances, I thought it would be fun to compile some of my favorites! It may seem like I am grasping at straws, but I just want to give some more overt context to how I feel she displays traits of autism. Hanajima

The second character I am focusing on is Saki Hanajima, one of Tohru's best friends and also another one of the (in my opinion) most autistic coded characters in Furuba. Though her personality contrasts Tohru's, she undoubtedly shares some of the same traits. Hanajima's powers in themself almost seem like a metaphor for autism. This was pointed out originally by @kdreader02 and I found myself thinking the same thing when I first read it. Hearing everyone's "waves" and loud voices almost seems like overstimulation or sensory overload that many autistic people experience. This scene encapsulates that perfectly, in my opinion
