I’m so torn on what Harold Bloor’s doctorate is actually in because like. The rancid vibes say business administration but my desire for him and Paton to have the most unhinged beef imaginable says history.
#it’s sure as hell not education related#partially because i think thats funny but mostly because harold would know he didnt need it#so he wouldnt waste his time on getting a degree that didnt serve him in any way#whereas business would actually be useful since he is handling the business aspects of the family#and history would be useful because fuck paton yewbeam specifically#(the schoolage drama i have for them is unhinged)#harold bloor#paton yewbeam#cotrk#cotrk headcanons#ecdysing

What really disturbs me in the Charlie Bone universe is the shitty parenting.
Bartholomew just gave up his son. Like he called and was told Ezekiel and Grizelda were raising Harold and Harold enjoyed this arrangement? Well, Barty, your job as a father is to go home and get your kid back, not go exploring some more.
Your son is on Venetia's side, Arthur? Well, your duty is to get him out anyway because he's friggin six! You don't just give up on him.
The Red King just waltzes off into the forest, leaving his grieving, half-orphaned children at home.
James gets a pass because he tried but Yolanda was just too powerful.
But Jesus fucking Christ! When your kid says, "I want to live with an evil person," you take them away anyway because you're the parent and it's your job to make decisions on the kid's behalf if the kid wants to make a horrible decision.

Note
It also feels as if, especially towards the later works in the series, Manfred and Ezekiel are starting to exclude Harold from their plans which in their world is essentially the same as excluding him from the family relationship. In the first few books the scale of things is smaller and there’s room for someone without an endowment to hold a position of lots of power, and Harold does, but as the books go on and the stakes rise, it just grows beyond him.
On the familial level I think there’s also an aspect to the relationships where Ezekiel has been in control and it was all done for his purposes from the beginning, so that’s always been in the way of the relationships between the subsequent fathers and sons. He sets up their marriages in order to get more money for the family and in order to (try to) produce endowed heirs. Harold and Manfred were both made for Ezekiel more than for their own fathers, so the complicated and emotionally distant relationships between father and son in some ways make sense.
Honestly the impression I always got from Dr. Bloor was that he wasn’t super into the villain stuff Ezekiel was, but went along it bc he raised him and all. Like I think he would have just liked to run a school and not be involved. I remember when he called the endowed students freaks, I think being raised by Ezekiel and having a powerful son like Manfred left him a little resentful, which could be interesting to explore. And at least Charlie told Bart he was as petty as the other Bloors
Yeah Dr Bloor never seemed that interested in Ezekiel’s evil plans. Especially considering that his reaction after Ezekiel and Manfred’s deaths was ‘I knew Blessed would do it one day’ and told Lyell and Paton that he wouldn’t give them any trouble now that Maybelle’s Will has been found. I do think he may have had some interest in the evil villain stuff, but as the series progressed he got tired of it and didn’t feel comfortable with committing literal murder or helping Count Harken.
Dr Bloor being resentful (and maybe also jealous?) of the endowed is a really interesting idea. It makes sense, especially if Ezekiel made him feel bad for not being endowed. It seems like the Yewbeams and Bloors really prize endowed people and I can see them making their unendowed family members feel inferior or inadequate because they don’t have an endowment.
I also wonder if Dr Bloor was resentful of Lyell as well. Lyell was the guy his father preferred over him. That had to hurt a lot. I love Bart but it’s so awful that he couldn’t accept his son for who he was and replaced him in a sense with Lyell, who is more like what Bart probably wanted in his son. Not to mention him essentially abandoning Harold to be raised by Ezekiel and the Yewbeams and not fighting for him. You really can’t blame Dr Bloor for not speaking to his father.
#im having harold bloor thoughts as usual#obviously harold and bart should have done better but i think it’s important to look at the way Ezekiel was pulling all the strings#also I think bart was definitely Worse because he got himself out but not his son#don’t abandon your kid you piece of shit#im once again reading way too much into a middle grade series#harold bloor#manfred bloor#ezekiel bloor#bartholomew bloor#charlie bone#cotrk

12 for Harold Bloor
12. What’s a headcanon you have for this character?
I have so many but some I think about quite a lot/that influence a lot of other things I think about are:
He was in the drama department- I think being in the drama department just is a Bloor Thing, and it contributes to them being so insufferable, but in different ways. Harold is super pretentious about plays but only really cares about them as texts, not performance.
Has hated Paton since they were kids in school together but it’s all for reasons he will never admit to (too vulnerable and/or petty), so when Paton starts to be more active against the Bloors during the series Harold is kind of game for it because at least now he has an excuse to go “fuck that guy” (he is also shitting his pants tho because he did NOT know Paton was that scary and boy is Harold out of his depth)
Going to college and getting a doctorate was super important to him because it was the most normal period he was ever going to have in his life and he just wants to be a Normal (Very Powerful) Man. His doctorate is in history because that sounds good for an educator but mostly because he knew Paton liked history more than anything and would never be able to go to college with his endowment and Harold is just that petty.
He has heard of bisexuality but just doesn’t bother thinking about it because What’s The Point (he already knows the woman he marries will be essentially chosen for him, marriage and family are a job, not love), but he did sleep around during college with a bunch of people because it was his only chance to experience choosing his partners.
Tbh learning about aromanticism would initially just confuse him more than fix him because he is so deep in his belief that love is for poor people.

He's the headmaster. He should have access to the records to see that he is or isn't called Charles. He's (distantly) related to Charlie and knows some of his elder relatives personally. Charlie's great-aunt works at his school. She never calls him Charles, either.
He would've had so many opportunities to know. Or at least question the belief
This is, hands down, the funniest option
"I have an announcement to make," the doctor said solemnly. “A new boy has arrived to join the endowed. Charles Bone, stand up."
Wait, if Charlie's full name really is Charles, then it feels kind of silly that everyone calls him Charlie. You'd think the more hostile or uptight characters might prefer Charles to Charlie, yet the nickname persists.

Pokémon AU for COTRK
I’m probably missing a few people but this is a good overview. And it was a lot of fun to do!
Claerwen is absolutely a Shiny Dustox (a white one). But she is Charlie Bone’s 2nd Pokémon. The first one is probably a Chikorita, as Charlie does try to be a calm protector.
Emma Tolly has a Swablu, a Tailow, and a Farfetch’d. Her aunt Julia has a Sylveon and a Grotle.
Olivia Vertigo has a Buneary & a Zorua.
Rembrandt has to be a Rattata. Once Billy is 10, he’ll be his.
Runner Bean is a Growlithe. He & Benjamin are super close.
The Gunn family has a deaf Persian. Fidelio has a Jigglypuff and an Illumise.
Gabriel Silk has a Ralts, a Togepi, and a Riolu. These choices are half because they suit his personality & powers, and half because I’m giving him some of my favorite Pokémon.
Tancred Torsson has a Castform, and I want to give him a baby Lugia. Especially if this AU means that the humans don’t have powers. In that case, his father has a grown Lugia, a Flygon, and a Gyarados.
Lysander Sage has a Chatot (so does Lauren) and he also has a Cubone, a Stufful, and an Ivysaur.
Asa Pike has a Mightyena & a Houndour.
Manfred Bloor has a Hypno, a Beheeyem, a Grumpig, & (later on) a Quilava.
Joshua Tilpin has an Abra and a Magnemite. I’m less sure which Pokémon the Branko twins & Dorcas would have.
Titania Tilpin has a Zoroark, a Mismagius, and a Gothorita.
Alice Angel has a Tsareena, a Ninetales, an Espeon, and a Gardevoir.
Blessed is an elderly Granbull. I did consider a Stoutland but Blessed isn’t meant to be fluffy. Ezekiel Bloor likely also has a Mismagius. Harold Bloor might have a Pokémon but more likely he leaves that to his relatives.
Bartholomew Bloor has a Jangmo-o, a Pidgeot, and an Absol. His adoptive daughter Naren has a Murkrow & a Sunflora.
Solomon is definitely a Dragonair. I’m still waffling on the Flames. Either they’re 3 Littens that can briefly insta-evolve into Incinearoars, or they’re a Vaporean, a Jolteon, & a Flareon that can shift into Suicune, Raikou, & Entei. The first option keeps the fiery theme but the second stresses their Legendary status. There are also rumors/legends of the Red King also having a Camerupt.
Queen Berenice is likely reincarnated into a Rapidash.
Lyell has a Flyon, a Wigglytuff, & a Salamance, all of which vanished when he did. They return to aid him against the Bloors.
Due to his seaside upbringing, Dagbert Endless already has 5 Pokémon. He has a Feebas, a Magikarp, a Froakie, a Mudkip, and a Tirtouga. It’d be during the near-drowning that Magikarp would evolve, and after Dagbert opts to join Charlie’s side that Feebas would.
Lord Grimwald has a Walrein, a Feraligatr, a Beartic, a Gyarados, a Sharpedo, and a Starmie.
Cook keeps her Shiny Clamperl secret, but she’s open about having a Kangaskhan and a Grovyle. Her sister also has a Shiny Clamperl along with an Empoleon and a Vaporeon.
Katya Kettle would have an Aggron and a Charizard. Later she adopts Solomon, of course.
Paton Yewbeam has a Luxray, a Decidueye, an Amaura, a Wartortle, and a Raichu.
I’m not sure what Pokémon Paton’s 4 sisters have. Venetia likely has a Liepard (Eric Shellhorn has a Geodude). Eustacia has an Exeggcute. Grizelda & Lucretia probably don’t bother with having Pokémon.
Amy Bone has a Leafeon. Maisie has a Delcatty.
Count Harken has a Lunatone, a Haunter, an Arbok, an Aerodactyl, and an Alakazam.
Thoughts?

What I imagine christmas with the Yewbeam/Bloor family is like
Charlie, Naren and Henry cause chaos. Miranda and Billy are chilling in the corner with Chattypatra and Rembrandt, as far away from Eric as possible. Eric is with Manfred and Harold, who are as far away from Naren and Bartholomew as possible. Emma is sitting with the adults because she doesn't want to be associated with whatever her cousins are up to. Paton, Julia, Arthur, Lyell, Amy, Maisie, Bartholomew, Mary and Pearl are actually enjoying Christmas. Venetia didn't come, she just dropped Eric at Harold's so she doesn't have to deal with him
Charlie and Naren are cousins (kind of)
+
Charlie and Emma are cousins (kind of)
=
Naren and Emma are cousins (kind of)???
Naren and Billy and Emma are cousins (kind of)?
Also: Henry and Charlie call each other cousin, too, so
Charlie, Naren, Billy, Emma and Henry pseudo-cousinship

"TAKES STOLEN MEAT IS JAILED 6 MONTHS," Toronto Star. August 20, 1943. Page 2. ---- Charles Riddell Took Basket to Home of Woman Friend ---- THOUGHT IT "HOT" ---- "C" Police Court, City Hall, Magistrate Prentice. Charles Riddell, convicted last week of receiving a basket of meat stolen from a packing company truck, was sentenced to six months In jail today. Detective Walter Scott said accused took the meat to the home of a woman on Queen St. a few minutes after it had been reported stolen.
BLAME OLDER MAN ---- "B" Police Court, City Hall, Magistrate Hanrahan. "These two boys were the tools of an older person," said Harold Chaplin, counsel for Joseph Cusimano and Joseph O'Sullivan, convicted of attempted shopbreaking. They were given suspended sentence for two years by Mag. Hanrahan in "B" police court today.
The accused stole goods from a Mutual St. factory.
With a penitentiary record, Fred Greene, [pictured at top] convicted of entering two Melrose Ave. homes and stealing a variety of articles, was sent to the penitentiary again, this time for two years.
"I'm being as lenient as I can in view of your record," the court added.
Suspended sentence for two years was granted James Pogson, convicted of retaining a bicycle.
Involved in a motor accident at Bathurst St. and Davenport Rd., when Miss Grace Gregor was injured, William Myman was fined $10 or 10 days for dangerous driving and had his driving license suspended for two months. He also must pay for damages suffered by the woman.
Ignace Chylinski, convicted of attempted auto theft, was given suspended sentence for two years. He was caught by the owner trying to start a car.
For attempting to break into a Queen St. W. store, Richard Thunder Sky, Indian, and Arthur Hart were given a two-year suspended sentence. They were found behind the store with an axe.
Albert Teeple was sentenced to nine months in the reformatory. Herbert Ball, R.C.A.F., was given four months, and G. Borland received suspended sentence for two years. All pleaded guilty of breaking into a tailor shop on Bloor St. W. last July 7 and stealing suits valued at about $500. Some of the goods was recovered. Ball admitted a record. He is on a two-year suspended sentence now. He said he had been in the R.C.A.F. a month.
Failure to remain at the scene of an accident resulted in Joseph Williams being sent to jail for 30 days. His driving license was suspended for two months. "In view of the increase in these hit-and-run accidents, I must impose a penalty that will punish the accused and also draw the attention of the motoring public to the fact that they must observe the law in this regard," said the court.
Williams was driving a car on Dundas St. at Sherbourne St. on Aug. 18 when he knocked P.C. James Keys from his bicycle. Keys received arm and back injuries. Motorcycle Officer Campbell said accused had been drinking.
TWO THROW BOTTLES ---- "A" Police Court, City Hall, Magistrate Browne. For throwing a beer bottle and smashing it on Victoria St., Albert Hawloe, who pleaded guilty, was fined $10 or five days. Bruce Sloan was caught by Constable McLellan throwing a whiskey bottle on Dalhousie St. He also pleaded guilty and was fined $10 or five days.
One month in jail was the sentence given William Marquardt, who pleaded guilty to failing to report for military training within the time limit. After the end of the term he will be turned over to the military authorities.
James Butler, enforcement officer, national selective service, said that on March 24 accused was notified to report for medical examination and did not.
[AL: Greene was 21, unemployed and claimed 'never to have worked' and was listed in his police and prison files as a Mohawk. He had been in the reformatory twice before, and had last been in Kingston Penitentiary in mid-1941. This time around he was convict #7409 and worked in the canvas shop at Kingston Penitentiary. He had only two reports against him for 'inappropriate language' and 'not working'. He was released March 1945.]

THIS THIS THIS
The whole Billy situation just has soooo much going on with it. From an endowed perspective it is fairly well understood and accepted that Bloor’s Academy is basically just the public face of the Bloor Family- it’s just a way to gather endowed (and otherwise talented) children and maintain power. But it is also still a school and has to operate as one! Not ALL of the teachers are there with some Red King-related agenda, some of them are real actual educators who went to school for this, chose this as a career, have spent their adult lives in this profession, and they are also there dealing with the Bloors’ bullshit! And the vast majority of the children there are just talented kids who are having to also deal with a magical war and power struggle they have nothing to do with, and even when their lives aren’t in danger it is still getting in the way of their educations.
The main Bloor Family Business is maintaining their status as a powerful endowed family and that business is frequently at odds with effectively running a school, but they are always willing to let that be someone else’s problem.
Just thinking of @brigwife's reblog of my post with the ages of characters and specifically Billy Raven and his education. In book 4 (Castle of Mirrors) Billy mentions that he's being held in first year at Bloor's despite having already done it something like twice before! That means they took a six year old and put him in the first year Bloor's classes??? They boy barely understands phonics and addition and they're having him learn year 7 history, mathematics, and literature?? Has anyone taught Billy how to do math?? Did anyone teach him to read??? Did they just throw him straight into algebra as a six year old and say tough luck??
Whoever gave Dr. Bloor his doctorate needs to revoke it right now. That man does not understand how education works.
#i maintain that there is no way harolds degree is in education because he would have seen it as pointless#he knew the job was his regardless and never gave a fuck about the school/education side of his position#he was getting a doctorate to be Big and Important and Serve The Family Interest#also like. the bloors for sure gave manfred a proper education before he started at the academy#either sending him to the city or (more likely) getting him a private tutor#so they do KNOW they arent educating billy properly because they run a school and have raised a child in this generation#they just dont care because at best billy is a tool to be owned and used and at worst a threat to be gotten rid of#billy raven#cotrk#the bloors
