Earthly Expedition
Written for @domaystic! Day 11: volunteering
T; 1.6k Harlock/Yama, Tochiro (Arcadia)
With the Arcadia's greenhouse bay now well established, the plants growing there can be carefully diversified via an expedition down to the Earth's surface to collect new samples; Yama stepping forward as the one to do that, as a matter of course, brings up some unexpected revelations.

[NEWS UPDATE] 999: Online Live and Archive Streams have been Announced for the Grand Finale Performance of "'Galaxy Express 999' THE MUSICAL"
Other Genepro Videos Featuring Sato Ryuji
As Prider: HERE
As Count Mecha: HERE
STORY DESCRIPTION
"Galaxy Express 999", known in Japanese as "Ginga Tetsudou 999", is an award-winning classic series created by Matsumoto Reiji, who is also famous for space opera classics like "Space Pirate Captain Harlock" (which is set in the same universe as "Galaxy Express 999") and "Space Battleship Yamato".
The story of "Galaxy Express 999" is set in a universe where humans have learnt to transfer their minds, but not their emotions, into mechanical bodies and achieve immortality. This has created a divide between those who are mechanised, elites with machine bodies, and those who aren’t.
Hoshino Tetsuro (Nakagawa Akinori) is a poor unmechanised human who desperately wants a machine body that would allow him to achieve immortality and the freedom offered only to the mechanised. Machine bodies are incredibly expensive, but they are supposedly given away for free in the Andromeda Galaxy, which is located at the end of the line for the Galaxy Express 999, a space train that only comes to Earth once a year.
CAST
Nakagawa Akinori as Hoshino Tetsuro
Hanafusa Mari as Maetel
Sato Ryuji as Count Mecha / Prider
Umeda Ayaka as Claire
Tokunaga Yuuki as Conductor
Fujioka Masaaki as Oyama Tochiro
Yazawa Yoko as Ryuzu
Matsumoto Rica as Prometheum
Hokusho Kairi as Queen Emeraldas
Miura Ryosuke as Captain Harlock
DESCRIPTION OF COUNT MECHA / PRIDER (SATO RYUJI’S CHARACTER)
Count Mecha, also known in Japanese as "Kikai-hakushaku", is a mechanised wealthy nobleman who hunts unmechanised humans for sport. He murders Tetsuro's mother in one such hunt at the start of Tetsuro's journey, and is one of the antagonists in the series.
The musical also expands on Count Mecha's story, telling of his time as a normal human before he gained his mechanised body: when he was Prider, someone who was beloved by the people around him.

:D I SEE TUMBLR IS WORKING JUST AS WELL AS TWITTER. :| It was Leijiverse, Harlock/Arcadia *coughcough*IfyouknowwhatImean and Emeraldas. :| Let's see if it'll work this time.
Yeah so apparently tumblr ate the latter half of that first ask. Here’s hoping it’s all of it.
001 | Send me a fandom and I will tell you my:
Favorite character: Look, as much as I love Harlock and Emeraldas, my heart’s always gonna be with Maetel. Girl can fight in heavy furs and I respect that. Also, she gave up her claim to Promethium for the greater good.
Least Favorite character: Count Mecha was a boring villain, ngl.
5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): I think we can both agree that Harlock/Arcadia is the ultimate otp and everything else pales in comparison.
Character I find most attractive: Maetel. But, you know how I love feminine girls.
Character I would marry: Well, you, obvs, but if I had to? Maetel.
Character I would be best friends with: Harlock is the kind of low-commitment dude I appreciate. I’m afraid Tochiro’s hygiene issues would get on my last nerve, though.
a random thought: Mayu deserved better
An unpopular opinion: Mayu deserved better
My Canon OTP: if Harlock/Arcadia isn’t canon, I’d be shocked.
My Non-canon OTP: I ship Kei with any of the women. Can she have an affair with Miime? I’d love to see that.
Most Badass Character: I’d say it’s a toss-up between Harlock and Emeraldas, but realistically it’s probably Emeraldas.
Most Epic Villain: I really liked the Harlock Saga version of Alberich.
Pairing I am not a fan of: I’m afraid Harlock’s too caught up with his bromance to pay Kei much attention.
Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): I think Mayu deserves to be a space pirate when she grows up.
Favourite Friendship: Harlock x Tochiro 4evar
Character I most identify with: None, really?
Character I wish I could be: Who doesn’t want to be as cool as Harlock?
002 | Send me a ship and I will tell you:
When I started shipping them: “tomo yo~” Practically since day 1.
My thoughts: You can’t tell me they didn’t fumble around a bit when Tochiro was alive
What makes me happy about them: Harlock’s devotion is the stuff of legends. Just, wow.
What makes me sad about them: Well, Tochiro’s a ship now, so *waves at the Arcadia*
Things done in fanfic that annoys me: I actually haven’t read much beyond yours, though I have seen some fan-arts and Harlock being stereotypical uke is *hilarious*
Things I look for in fanfic: I’d like to see more focus on the women without them being tied to men, both in canon and outside
My wishlist: More ladies whose lives don’t revolve around men.
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: Nah, I’m chill with Harlock having long drinking sessions with his ship.
My happily ever after for them: They get to grow old together and then Arcadia can go to Mayu
003 | Give me a character & I will tell you:
How I feel about this character: I have complicated feelings because she’s hella cool, but her life is spent in mourning over Tochiro and I’d like her to have other things in her life.
Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: I think she needs to move past Tochiro, first.
My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: Maetel!
My unpopular opinion about this character: I... actually don’t really like how much of her is tied up in Tochiro and I wish she was a more complete person. Also, I wish she’d been involved with Mayu’s life somehow. Like, I know some people aren’t cut out to be moms, but... MAYU DESERVED BETTER
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I wish she had some sort of connection with Mayu :/
Favorite friendship for this character: She has friendships?
My crossover ship: tbh I’d probably ship her with Lenna because Lenna’s kind but won’t take bullshit

Arcadia of my Youth and Endless Orbit SSX (brief) final thoughts
Tumblr media
I’ve been fairly interested in seeing something to do with Leiji Matsumoto’s famous space pirate Captain Harlock for a fair while now - with the announcement of SRW T and Harlock’s inclusion therein I finally had an excuse. Interestingly, the SRW T team picked Endless Orbit SSX, the anime followup to the 1982 movie Arcadia Of My Youth, both of which I’ve now seen. While the latter was a really beautiful movie that I’d highly recommend, the TV series is a bit of a controversial pick for Banpresto, as it’s now of dubious canonicity and was brought to a clumsy, crashing halt by its premature cancellation less than halfway into its projected TV run. However, I thought that it was a decent watch for as long as it lasted.
Arcadia of My Youth is something of an origin story for Harlock, as it chronicles his transition from military captain to renegade as he forges a friendship with the diminutive but affable engineer Ooyama Tochiro, and their subsequent uprising against the oppressive alien Illumidas empire using the Arcadia, a warship built by Tochiro in secret. Endless Orbit SSX is fundamentally a continuation of this story, chronicling Harlock and Tochiro’s search for a real Arcadia, a paradise world where people can be free of Illumidas oppression, all while fighting off the Illumidas as well as Mr. Zone, a genius human engineers who seeks to further his own lot by collaborating with the the enemy. Both stories carry the same kind of themes, primarily of upholding idealism against a backdrop of despair and tragedy. Harlock and his crew are portrayed as free spirits against an overbearing, all-destroying authority that lays waste to all it comes into contact with, and those who have willingly bent their knee to it. The mood throughout is dire, with the suffering of those trod on by the Illumidas equalled only by the mental torment of those who were forced to sell themselves out to them, with only Harlock remaining indomitable throughout. His stoicism might not make him everybody’s cup of tea but I thought he was a really cool character in this, fitting with his enduring legacy as one of the iconic characters of Japanese sci-fi, and the supporting cast plays its part in both parts of the story too - in particular, I thought that Zone, SSX’s chief antagonist was a pretty interesting character. Unfortunately, the show’s early cancellation really shows - it was shitcanned at the 22 episode mark when it was scheduled for more than 40, and the ending is a rush job. They probably did the best they could - it’s not a disaster like Layzner’s rushjob ending but it wasn’t handled gracefully like Gundam X was either - it’s like reading a book that just skips to the end when you’re really just beginning to get to the good bits in the middle.
Presentation wise, the movie is really beautiful. It’s this strange but sublime blend of classic sci-fi and an almost baroque romanticism, which is probably best summed up by the look of the Arcadia itself, which is a blend of sci-fi battleship and pirate galleon. The TV series isn’t bad looking either, although it reuses footage a lot and leans a little more on the typical sci-fi side of things, making it feel less unique and artistic than the movie it follows up on, though it definitely has its moments.
Ultimately, the show’s a somewhat hard sell, although I actually don’t think it’s a bad pick for SRW T - the fact that the story’s kind of barebones due to its early cancellation gives them a little room to play fast and loose to slot it into the larger narrative of the game, but it still brings enough to contribute, both in terms of stuff for the player to use and cool enemies to face off against. Even if you’re planning on getting the game though, I wouldn’t hold it against you if you skipped the show. The rushed ending puts a damper on what could have been a great series, and it’s not really considered canon anymore because it contradicts stuff from the original TV series. The movie on the other hand is a must-watch if you ask me. It’s not explicitly included in SRW T but I expect that its events will make up part of the backstory and that they’ll be referenced in the game. Even if that’s not the case, you should watch it anyway. It’s a really beautiful piece of cinema that feels like an artistic vision, almost like a sci-fi Shakespeare tragedy at times. It’s very melodramatic and it has some goofy nonsense in it but to me that was part of its appeal.
I was just gonna watch Rayearth next, but I wanna be fair to everything I’ve got on my (quite long) list of things to watch before SRW T comes out in late March, so I’m gonna use my traditional method of picking which of these series to watch next. It might end up being Rayearth anyway. Whatever it is, I hope that I can work through it quite quickly, I’ve got a long way to go.

Affection headcanons!
Harlock:
Despite how he looks on the surface, when Harlock is close enough to you, he's incredibly affectionate. He usually doesn't initiate hugs or kisses, but he does reciprocate provided there's no emergency going on. His love language is through music and acts of kindness, if he plays music with you, especially in the captain's quarters, that's a surefire sign he loves you. Combine that with a kiss and you know he's in love with you.
Miime:
She usually just sticks to a hand on the shoulder, maybe a light hug to comfort you if you're upset, and tends to play music only around Harlock or when she's by herself, but if she has a close enough bond with you, she'll offer to play her harp for you. Music is the love language her and Harlock have in common after all. When she's drunk/tipsy and she's real close to you, expect her to offer a kiss or a tight hug at least once lol. She'll kiss Harlock or you on the cheek or forehead on rare occasions, but a kiss on the lips is only likely if she's bored and wants something fun to do lol.
Tochiro
He's fairly shy and giggly around you at first, but the moment you hug him for the first time, expect him to not want to let go for a while lol, and maybe squeeze you tightly. Words of affirmation and physical affection are two of his love languages and expect him to utterly melt when you compliment him and either respond with a semi-poetic compliment towards you or immediately hug or kiss you in return. He's generally friends before potential lovers until he grows close to you, in which case he will protect you and Harlock with his life. (though, don't be surprised if the three of you end up in a polycule in some universes lol or in a big ol' polycule with Harlock, Tochiro, AND Emeraldas in some cases)
Bonus sexuality headcanons:
Harlock: Bisexual, demiromantic [late bloomer bi in Gun Frontier, his feelings are very buried in that universe and he may or may not be oblivious to them as a result lol] Miime: Sex neutral asexual, demiromantic Tochiro: Bisexual and generally biromantic, with a somewhat stronger preference for the opposite sex (about a 2.5 on the Kinsey scale) [DEFINITELY closeted and in major denial about it in Gun Frontier]
