Ngl it’s a bit weird that people are saying Velvet’s new design is an “upgrade”(the whole upgrade,downgrade trend in general gives me the ick). I do like her new design,but let’s not put down her old design please?

It gave off cutesy/gothic Lolita vibes. The reason why others hating on Velvet’s old design rubs me the wrong way, is because people who wear that type of fashion already get bullied, made fun of, or harassed enough, and even get pictures taken of us in public without permission.

We also have to deal with the misconception that we’re “dressing like this for the male gaze” and get put down by other women with internalized misogyny because of this or people going,“eww why are dressing in Lolita,that book is about a pedo” despite us repeating MULTIPLE TIMES that lolita fashion is NOT related to nor does it come from that book.

I feel like there’s this weird trend that’s been happening, not necessarily recently since it’s been around for awhile, but what I’m talking about is hyperfeminine characters or hyperfemininity in general is sorta being demonized by both men and women with us getting accused of “only playing into the patriarchy and making us women look bad” if any of us dares to like anything girly or the color pink.

Like yes, not all women are into girly stuff and that’s ok. But that doesn’t give you the right to put down women who ARE into girly stuff. (I like girly things while also liking “non feminine” things myself)Lolita and harijuku fashion in general HAS FEMINIST ROOTS. The fashion/subculture was literally created to rebel against Japan’s societal expectations, norms, and patriarchy.

And most women dressing in hyperfeminine clothing in general are doing so as an act of reclamation. So surprise, surprise. You can be a feminist while ALSO BEING HYPERFEMININE.Shocker, I know right? However I’m ABSOLUTELY NOT trying to say that Viv had bad intentions with Velvets redesign AT ALL. Like I said, I love velvet’s new design and I’m not saying it looks any less feminine either.

It actually kinda reminds be a bit of gyaru fashion, which is another harijuku fashion/subculture.

Another thing I forgot to mention is that the hate we get is even worse for black women. We constantly get accused of trying to be white or trying to be Asian. Like no I ain’t trying to be white nor Asian,nor am I trying to attract a man I just like cute and colorful stuff and poofy/frilly dresses-😭😭

(Though I do like gothic stuff as well since I don’t wanna stick to just one aesthetic since there’s others that I like. Referring to the whole “trying to attract a man/dressing for the male gaze” I still stand by the fact that, that isn’t what I’m trying to do. Besides I only date fictional characters so-).
