the nazgul we know in lotr are very mysterious and scary direct servants of sauron, but they weren't always like that and how that part where they were still normalish people, just with rings of power must have looked like from the outside makes me slightly crazy, because.
you're, say, a númenorean farmer, and the neighbouring liegelord just doesn't seem to age and gets crueler year by year. theories abound and none of them are actually weirder than the truth. people start to be terrified of him -- his castle is avoided as much as you can, but can you really? i tremble for the servants of his that must have inevitably existed... and then he what? disappears one day? literally disappears (though that should have been gradual and would also have been terrifying to watch)? makes himself king or something despite being, you know, ghostly (that is if you're not in númenor because we know nothing like that happened there. not that what did happen was better).
just, how did it go??

“In 1404, King Taejong fell from his horse during a hunting expedition. Embarrassed, looking to his left and right, he commanded, “Do not let the historian find out about this.” To his disappointment, the historian accompanying the hunting party included these words in the annals, in addition to a description of the king’s fall.“
