Swordes - Gasoline (demo) released June 7, 2023 via Music Website (@musicwebsiteblog).
"This song is about lust and sin and specifically the machiavellian ways people will fuel their hunger for it, without regard for others. I wanted the video to reflect violence and really just “feminine rage” or whatever and it ended up being super cathartic to embody this insane coquette character and run around half naked, covered in fake blood, swinging a crow bar around." -Swordes

if i hear another person talk about a retro game, system, or computer having a specific "soundfont" i think i'm gonna lose all will to live and spontaneously drop dead in front of them
#juney.txt#not how it works besties#older 8 bit machines generally had bespoke synthesizer chips that could output some square waves and some noise.#maybe some sine and saw waves if you were lucky#the megadrive had a yamaha chip in it but sega the bastards never gave devs proper instructions on how to use it#so a lotttt of devs just used the inbuilt settings on the development software they had#so a lot of megadrive games sound similar even though the system was technically capable of a lot more </3#the snes was allllll samples all day#any sounds you wanted you had to hand to the chip in advance#no inbuilt synths for you#anyway in all of these cases music data was just stored as raw computer instructions.#literally just code telling the audio hardware what to do each frame#no midis involved and simply slapping a soundfont someone made on a midi file someone else made does not constitute an ''8-bit'' cover

So I was hyperfocused on clock module concept the back half of this week, so I started coding some stuff up. This afternoon, I think I stumbled onto a timer compare value that let's me just increment the master clock by the bpm value without any scaling. Sounds fake, but okay...
(maybe longer post later breaking down the code)
#i still gotta math it out more and run some simulations and hardware tests#but it seems pretty straightforward at this point#synth diy#sdiy#arduino

i love little things put into songs so much. extra harmonies, layering of vocals, the smallest of synths. just little things, and if you took them out of the song it'd probably still work, but the song would just be Less and emptier without it. i love you additional little things in music
#this is mostly bc like.#the slow buildup of al's harmonies in hardware store during that quick bit is so. holy shit!!!#also the little synths in nin songs and bits like in terrible lie and in htda songs and#starbomb and ninja sex party and just#i love music. i love when musicians add stuff to their songs to add to the mood. good lord#vex rambles

Tear down photos of my personal TB-3-GP, Analog bassline synthesizer, or as I like to call her Motoko.
The TB-3 is behringers version of the classic (and completely unavailable) Roland TB-303, the sound of acid. it is also, annoyingly, just slightly wider then my light box, which made taking these photos more of a pain then I expected.
I really like the transparent plastic style on these, really reminds my of stuff I saw as a kid,. I also like that the named the colors as flavors, GP of course standing for grape.
Note the through hole electrolytic, and selected film capacitors, Very nice attention to detail, and good little boost for repairability.
As a synthesizer it is more versatile then I expected it to be, As well as the mandatory acid jams, and some trance, I recently used this to record all the lead lines in my Wagner cover, below.

when it comes to deep learning style vocal synths vs concatenative synthesis style vocal synths i like and use both, theres pros and cons for each, i adore deep learning synths for their versatility in vocal modes/expressions/appends/whatever and their breaths and of course im a fan of how many have multi-lingual functionality, but one thing they just cant beat concatenative on is the late 2000s-ass NND-ass doujin-ass impossibly fast rapid fire syllable'd japanese pop singing a la disappearance of hatsune miku. to be honest miku barely handles it. thats what the song is about. to me no one does it better than a basic but well oto'd CV utau LOL
#people are too mean about cv. i love cv. its fantastic for fast singing like that. and i like it for character-y voices#its choppy yeah but thats to its benefit for speed. dl and even some sample based synths sound too smooth for their own good for that#synthv's ai banks are especially tough to sing fast short words with. you gotta mess a lot not just with the pitch transitions#but u gotta get into those phonemes too. you gotta get in there#openutau with diffsinger or enunu or something ive found handles it a bit better tho. and voisonas built in staccato feature also is useful#interesting cevio ai also struggles a bit like SV LOL despite being a sister to voisona....#and SV's standard banks like my beloved benbu do pretty well. maybe because SV was born from moresampler#but also dont get me wrong. i do love my deep learning banks. smooth and clear. they often lose some power but they make up for it in#with their versality like i said. plus theres the file size benefit - usually under a gb for what would need like multiple in samples.#tho theres also the other side of that where most sample based synths dont need as powerful hardware. pros and cons#but also dont get me wrong the other way. i love a good stretched and looped sample too JKFDKfsd rn we're getting a LOT of#commercial AI banks because the tech is new and newly affordable and i assume it must be easier on the vocal provider#still a lot of work but maybe providing some hours of data is easier than carefully recording specific syllables for hours? i dunno#BUT the humble CV japanese utau bank will never die. worry not. more will come out every second. hell u can make one too#i should make one....... someday....................

I'm still new to all this, so maybe I just haven't hit a counter example, but I love how modular is all about sharing. Like I watch a video and hear a really amazing sound and think, "oh that'd be really cool to try to replicate", so I go on the website to try to glean what's going on from the manual or something and there's a whole entire link to a github page with all the source code
#getting ahold of and working with the hardware is probably another matter entirely#but it is theoretically feasible to make a budget version#synth diy#diy electronics#modular synth#modular synthesizer
