OKAY here are the photos because I need to get this out of my system. here are the photos from along the way of building a new enclosure for my mantellas—first the sides had to be siliconed so the foam would have a better grip, then larger pieces of cork were siliconed. After that, I was able to use the expanding foam to attach more cork & add more texture & body. Then, I carved the expanding foam for the desired look & so the silicone would stick to the foam, and then I applied silicone & dried moss + coco fiber (and some other stuff). and then we got to fill it in!
I’ve been super happy to see how this turned out. I can’t wait to start another project like this.

Very excited to announce I am finally able to start up a dedicated freshwater goby stream tank soon!
I found a 30 gallon long (4 feet long!) aquarium quite cheap on Facebook marketplace a while back. It’s passed the water holding test, and now I just have to give it a good scrub to remove some water scaling. I’m also picking up some sand and river rocks this weekend to start the hardscape process, though I’m still on the lookout for good driftwood, a light and a small power head. I’m going to with plants that will accentuate the flow, namely various hairgrass and taller crypts along the back, moss on the driftwood, and some smaller plants as accents around the hardscape. Some of the larger river stones will be on rotation with a small container/tank in a sunny spot to accumulate algae and biofilm to munch on.
For sure I’m planning on getting a group of either Stiphodon annieae or S. rutilaurius, depending on what’s available in my city at the time.

I would also like a few each of a Rhinogobius and Sicyopus species, again depending on what’s available. I’m partial to R. zhoui but I haven’t seen them for sale in ages.
I would also like to have a school of rainbow shiners (Notropis chrosomus), but they may get a bit large for a 30 gallon. Though advice on aquarium size for a group of rainbow shiners really varies, with anywhere from a 15G to a 55G recommended as a minimum for a school.
But that’s still at least a month or more away, seeing as I don’t even have water in the tank at the moment. I’ve just been wanting to set up a goby-dedicated tank for ages and I’m as excited as a kid in a candy store!
