#theres this feeling i get sometimes. i find it very hard to articulate. its part despair and part awe. dispair at how beautiful the world is #all those intricate little process coming together to organize the chaos. i dont kno y i feel it so deeply or y it hurts so much #because its just. no matters what horrible things r going on in the world. ur body is this miraculous collection of chemicals and reactions #mobile containers of water with a history that spirals back billions of years. and you can hear and see and experience and reflect #and when you die the world goes on spinning without you. if we as humans destroyed this planet past the part of our ability to inhabit it #it wouldnt even matter. there would be continued life past humanity. cosmically we r tiny and insignificant and we dont matter #but were beautiful and wonderful and infinity complex and knowing that leaves me in agony. because i want to kno everything right now but #mind is too small and i walk around with the disorientation of someone whos just been hit in thr face ans i cant focus enough to read #cant make the words make sense and i cant justify the time it would take to try. so i sit on my deck. in the sun. crying as i think about #how the light hit the grass in my front yard the last time i was home. how the cliffs in the backyard are ringed with red lines of iron #separated out as the water leached through the sandstone. how every avaliable surface is stained green as organisms reach upward toward #the sun. and its beautiful and i dont kno y im crying. maybe its bc i cant just throw everything aside and chase that feeling. im not #allowed to feel it. im not allowed to talk abt it in the way i want. bc im afraid no one cares as much as me in the same way. bc when i #talk abt what i study its obscure and academic and so far from what most ppl think abt that they get intimidated and dont try to understand #so i just try not to talk abt it. or maybe im just afraid. bc i have my 1st TA meeting tomorrow and i meet with my new advisor friday #and im worried and im afraid i wont b able to do this in a way that doesnt make me feel like im dying. bc i like to b busy and i like having #a strict schedule but if u throw me that knife im going to stab myself with it bc i dont kno how wield it as a tool without hurting myself #sure ill get the job done. but at what cost? whatever. ill try to b better this time. try to hold tight to the wonder. but that feels like #reaching out into forever. knowing ill never make contact. not knowing what im reaching for.#the closest approximation to the feeling i can find is that scene in the terror. where go0dsir is asking if god is there. any god. and it #doesnt matter bc he can see god in the landscape. in an environment that's so harsh and barren that its killing him slowly in the worst of #ways and its beautiful. its still beautiful to him. there is wonder here. and im wasting my time laying in a dark room crying bc i put #myself into a container so constrictive that the surface snaps and i come spilling out as an angry liquid. smearing away into nothing #unrelated

Once Were Warriors is on NZ netflix! switch on ur vpn and give it a watch. (if you dont have a vpn; watch it anyway).

this film is profound, anguished and violent. its essential to ur understanding of nz film and maori culture, especially if you are a fan of temuera morrison (star wars)/taika waitit's comedies. while its fun to occasionally indulge in the stereotype that 'kiwiland' is this idyllic fantasy world, we are a real country with real problems. you cant take the sweet without the bitter and this film explores NZ's bitter history of poverty, abuse, and discrimination, but most importantly: what happens to the survivors?

Here's the other pumpkin I carved this year (I did it yesterday but I was too busy doing other things, like cooking the pumpkin on the stove, and didn't carve it until late).

Dracula on the front, simple bat design on the back.

#pumpkin #jack o lantern #dracula #asj post #I went by Dracula's description near the start of the book.#I didn't want to carve his nose that way but I couldn't get carving it from the back side to work. ...The shape still doesn't come across.#I was thinking about using a black wet-erase marker to color in his hair and the bat.#So that he would have light hair sometimes and dark hair other times.#But when I tested the marker on the bat I realized it blocks the light from shining through.#I also found out wet-erase markers don't erase well on porous things. So there's a tiny black mark on the bat.#There's also some reddish staining on the white part of the pumpkin because I used red marker to make the sketch.#I need to remember for next time to erase the marker after making an initial outline with my x-acto knife.#I probably should've made his eyes' sclera and eyebrows and mustache lighter but was worried about it blending in too much with his irises.#I was thinking of using my red wet-erase marker to make his irises and lips reddish but then I found out light won't shine through the ink.#...I think it looks better in-person... My camera just can't pick up on jack-o-lanterns right.#I got slightly over 1 1/3 cups of pumpkin puree out of these two. Same as last year. ...And maybe around a cup of seeds.#It was easier to cook this time because I didn't add much water. Really hard to cook off water.

I'm genuinely not experienced at all with watercolors, other than using them a bit back when I was 13 and just sometimes watching people draw with them so!!!! YOU CAN DO ITTTT TOOOOOO

i have some and i can use them, i barely have any technique tho because i've been using them so sparingly for years

it's very very impressive that you can achieve looks like these with barely any experience ! i think achieving the vision is so much more important than the amount of skill that goes into it but sometimes it's so hard to do that without the skill !

i can do it too i'm sure, but it's just really overwhelming and the supplies don't want to agree with my brain u-u i'll get it eventually

It turns out the cookies are real — sort of.

They are baked at the home of Lara MacLean, who has been a “puppet wrangler” for the Jim Henson Company for almost three decades. MacLean started as an intern for Sesame Workshop in 1992 and has been working for the team ever since.

The recipe, roughly: Pancake mix, puffed rice, Grape-Nuts and instant coffee, with water in the mixture. The chocolate chips are made using hot glue sticks — essentially colored gobs of glue.

The cookies do not have oils, fats or sugars. Those would stain Cookie Monster. They’re edible, but barely. “Kind of like a dog treat,” MacLean says.

Before she reinvented the recipe in the 2000s, the creative team behind “Sesame Street” used versions of rice crackers and foams to make the cookies. The challenge was that the rice crackers would make more of a mess and get stuck in Cookie’s fur. And the foams didn’t look like cookies once they broke apart.

Cookie has been portrayed since 2001 by David Rudman, who took over the role from Frank Oz. Rudman’s right hand moves the mouth, which is eating, and his left hand holds the cookies. Both work in concert to break the cookies, which means they have to be soft enough to fall apart.

Rudman said soft cookies are best, adding, “The more crumbs, the funnier it is. If he eats the cookie, and it only breaks into two pieces if it’s too hard, it’s just not funny,” he said. “It looks almost painful. But if he eats a cookie and it explodes into a hundred crumbs, that’s where the comedy comes from.”

MacLean has perfected a recipe that is “thin enough that it’ll explode into a hundred crumbs,” Rudman said. “But it’s not too thin that it’ll break in my hand when I’m holding it.”

Not every (human) guest realizes that the cookies aren’t meant to be eaten. Adam Sandler appeared on an episode and decided to share in the muppet's delight by spontaneously eating a cookie with him on set.

“As soon as the cameras cut, he was like, ‘Blech!' ” MacLean said.

not 2 vent but like i love remembering how poor my living conditions are currently.....

#what do you mean the only clean towels we have are like covered in mysterious brown stains and smell like wet dogggg #everything that comes out of our washer smells so bad it's not even funny #i can't shower whenever i want either bc the water heater's pilot light doesn't stay on ever #i feel soap run down my leg and i panic bc i think it's a roach...#i get out of the shower and am immediately attacked by fleas ......#i just wanna take a nice shower and have clean towels and listen to music and have no bugs on me it shouldn't be this hard i don't think #adrian speaks #hopefully this will be over in a few months....#i love this house despite everything but i need to get out so bad
