Don't want to miss a thing
An Eddie Munson one-shot.
Inspired by an anon ask for daddy Eddie!
warnings: female reader, baby teething, fluff, references to Flight of Icarus (Eddie's mother's name)
You were awakened to a shrill cry from the other room and sighed tiredly.
You loved being a mom and loved your daughter more than anything but waking up every other hour in the middle of the night wasn’t at the top of the list of the things you loved about it.
Your daughter, Lizzie, was teething and only fell asleep out of pure exhaustion and as soon as she had slept enough to be able to feel the irritation in her gums again she woke up and screamed.
You carefully untangled yourself from Eddie, whom was sleeping soundly on the other side of you, a protective arm over your waist, his nose all but buried in your hair.
Silently you walked into your daughter’s room, seeing her little face screwed up in frustration, as she chewed on her lip to get rid of the itching ache in her mouth.
”Come on, I know what’s better,” you said as you lifted her into your arms.
She looks so much like Eddie, flew through your mind, for probably the thousandth time, as you kissed Lizzie’s forehead. She was the spitting image of him – Robin had even commented, ”were you even present at conception, Y/N?” when the whole gang came and visited you at the hospital after you had given birth.
Her eyes may have been blue when she was born, as most newborns, but they gradually darkened to Eddie’s chocolate shade after just a couple of months. Her hair was dark, the same color as Eddie’s, and already curly, and she had his smile, the shape of his eyebrows.
She had your nose, though, and you supposed you should be grateful for that, to at least have her resemble you in some degree. You and Eddie had decided to name her Elizabeth, after Eddie’s mother. Elizabeth Arwen – the last one from Eddie’s favorite book series, Lord of the Rings. He had been ready to beg to get you to agree but in your opinion it was a pretty and unique name, so you happily went along with it.
You carried Lizzie with you to the kitchen and took out a pacifier from the freezer, warming it up by putting it into your own mouth at first, so it wouldn’t be completely frozen through, and then offered it to your daughter. She willingly opened her mouth and sighed in contentment when the chill eased the ache in her gums.
”There, that’s better, hmm?” you cooed and swayed with her, even though you couldn’t suppress a big yawn.
”I can take her if you want to sleep,” you heard a voice say behind you and almost jumped from the fright.
”Jesus, Eddie,” you said, voice full of laughter. ”Don’t sneak up on me like that.”
Eddie snorted. He was dressed in his worn plaid pajama pants, bare chested, hair all tousled from sleep. Even though you were drained to the bone, you still felt your heart flutter at the sight of him.
”Come on, baby,” Eddie said again, ”you deserve some sleep, youve had to do most of the lifting all this time.”
That was true. Since you were on maternity leave and Eddie worked shifts at the car shop you had resigned yourself to take most of the burden when Lizzie woke at night.
”But what about work?” you wondered, bouncing your daughter on your hip.
”I’ve got some vacation days saved up. They’ll just be happy if I don’t use them all during the summer, when everyone else does. I could use a day to just be with my two favorite girls. ”
You nodded, warmth welling up inside you from his statement, and finally passed Lizzie over to him. She smiled at the sight of her dad, hands immediately going to his long hair, wanting to play with it.  You smiled too, seeing your beloved daughter with the love of your life.
”I’ll take her to her room, see if I can make her fall back asleep,” Eddie told you, stroking Lizzie’s back, as you turned around to go to your own bedroom.
You crawled into bed with a sigh, closing your eyes. Sleep was almost upon you when you heard a low, melodic sound penetrating the mist of slumber.
” I could stay awake just to hear you breathin'
Watch you smile while you are sleepin'
While you're far away and dreaming
I could spend my life in this sweet surrender
I could stay lost in this moment forever
Where every moment spent with you is a moment I treasure.”
Eddie. He was singing to Lizze.
His voice was low, it was obvious he was singing to soothe her into sleep, but it was still clear enough that you could hear him, making out the words. It brought tears to your eyes.
”Don't wanna close my eyes, I don't wanna fall asleep
'Cause I'd miss you, babe
And I don't wanna miss a thing
'Cause even when I dream of you
The sweetest dream would never do
I'd still miss you, babe
And I don't wanna miss a thing.”
Lizzie was remarkably quiet – either she had fallen back asleep or she was as transfixed by her daddy’s voice as you were.
Your tiredness  forgotten, you got out of bed and padded down to Lizzie’s room, seeing Eddie sitting in the rocking chair with Lizzie in his arms, looking down into her eyes, eyes that were a complete copy of his.
“Lying close to you, feelin' your heart beating
And I'm wonderin' what you're dreamin'
Wonderin' if it's me you're seein'
Then I kiss your eyes and thank God we're together
And I just wanna stay with you
In this moment forever
Forever and ever.”
Lizzie was awake, you saw, but she was blinking repeatedly, as if she was fighting sleep, not wanting to miss the soothing sound of her dad singing to her.
Eddie looked up and saw you standing there. ”Honey? I thought you were asleep?”
”I was about to, but then something so beautiful called me over here,” you gently teased him. ”And this sight... it was worth it. I guess I’m like you – I don’t want to miss a thing.”
Eddie smiled, the most beautiful smile in the world, you thought, at least until your daughter had smiled at you for the first time. But then again, her smile was Eddie’s, so go figure.
Eddie continued the song, Lizzie’s eyes finally closing, her intense sucking and chewing on the pacifier slowing down as her breathing evened out.
Eddie whispered-sang as he got up from the rocking chair and carefully placed Lizzie back in her crib.
You wrapped your arms around Eddie’s middle, resting your chin against his arm as you two stood, watching your sleeping daughter.
“He has a point,” Eddie whispered as he pulled you tightly against him.
“Who?”
“Steven Tyler. The sweetest dream can’t possible match up to this.”
You couldn’t help but giggle quietly. Trust Eddie to be able to make a rock reference. But oh, how you loved him for it.
“No, I suppose that’s true. I really don’t want to miss a single thing with her. Or you.
“The feeling is mutual, baby,” Eddie promised you as you two quietly walked out of your daughter’s room and back to your own.

It's (sometimes) okay to trust a stranger
Sam Carpenter x Hicks!Reader
Tumblr media
Word Count: 2.7k
Summary: Sixteen year old Sam just needs a friend. Despite the odds, she finds one in you.
A/N: this was supposed to be short but for some reason I couldn't stop myself from making it longer. hope u enjoy anyways!
Harshly slamming your front door shut, you stomped towards your car, hopped in, and quickly started the engine. Your chest was heaving up and down furiously and you could feel tears uselessly streaming down your cheeks. In one last fit of anger, you pounded your clenched fists into the steering wheel. Your temporary breakdown is interrupted at the sight of the front door swinging back open, your mom striding quickly towards you. You move faster than her, shifting the car into reverse and flying into the street without a care in the world.
You hear your mom scream your name as you shift back into drive and absolutely floor it, cruising carelessly into the slowly darkening night. Hopefully she noticed you were going well above the speed limit, you knew it would piss her off even more if she did.
Reaching one hand up towards your face, you angrily swipe the tears away before clicking the radio on. The volume is unnecessarily loud, just how you like it.
As you aimlessly drive, you’re finally able to catch your breath and get a grip on your raging emotions. Deep down you know you had no right to be as mad as you are, but you were just so frustrated with your mother’s behavior lately. She expected you to be so perfect and happy and a ray of fucking sunshine all the time and trying to live up to her high standards had you so exhausted. It didn’t help that she constantly compared you to your younger brother, who she so clearly favored.
Tears welled up in your eyes for the second time and you let them fall. You felt hopeless and defeated. Worst of all, there was nothing you could do to make yourself feel better. You could only accept your fate and lay in the bed that was made for you.
You pull into an empty parking lot, hug your knees tight to your chest, and force yourself to recall the fight between you and your mother.
***
You sat in your room, humming along to the music you had idly playing in the background. After finishing all of your homework, you had decided to paint your nails. It was something that you found to be oddly relaxing and it had become a form of self-care for you.
Before you could open up the bottle of nail polish, a knock sounded at your door. “Come in,” you called.
The small form of your eleven year-old brother, Wes, peeked into your room. “Mommy says it’s time for dinner.” He grins toothily at you, “She got sushi!”
Though sushi was more of his favorite food than it was yours, you smiled brightly for the boy’s sake. “Mm yum” you hummed, “Race ya to the kitchen.”
He laughed as you took off, sprinting down the stairs and skidding to a halt just in front of the dining room. Before you could even begin to situate yourself at the table, your mom’s overly sweet voice broke your inner peace, “Y/N,” she scolded, “No running down the stairs. You or Wesley could easily get hurt.”
Wes apologized, a small frown on his chubby face. You, however, remained silent and clenched your jaw in irritation. Of course within seconds of her being home, she had already found a way to put a stop to your relaxed state.
She handed out the sushi and you all dug into your respective meals. She and Wes chatted about his day at school while you kept to yourself, deciding instead to scroll mindlessly through your phone. Seeing a particular funny post of Kirby’s, you couldn’t stop the light chuckle from sliding out of your mouth.
Your mother tutted and reached across the table to pluck your phone from your hands. “No phones at the table.”
You had to refrain from rolling your eyes, instead choosing to divert your attention to your nails, noting that they would need to be filed before you applied the polish.
Your mom turned her attention away from Wes and onto you. “So,” she spoke, sounding extremely cheerful, “How’s school going for you, honey?”
You sighed before responding, “Okay, I guess. Lots of assignments this week so that sucks, but I guess it’s fine since there aren’t any exams.”
She seemed pleased by your response and bit into another piece of sushi. Just as you were about to turn back to your own meal, she spoke again, “Who do you hang around with these days?”
You groaned internally, knowing by her tone that nothing good could come out of this conversation. Leave it to Deputy Judy to try and police who you decided to hang out with. You scratched your neck before answering, “Mostly just Kirby these days. Other than her I keep to myself.”
Her eyebrows raised at your answer before she shook her head. You did roll your eyes this time. “What mom? Go ahead, explain to me what the problem with Kirby is.”
Needless to say, you were annoyed. She never approved of who you were friends with and wasn’t afraid to tell you exactly what she thought of them. “Well,” she spoke indignantly, “To start, the girl has broken about ten different driving laws. She’s constantly participating in underage drinking and has helped Jill Roberts sneak out of her house on several different occasions. She’s a terrible influence, sweetie, and from what I’ve heard, her parents are almost never home. That’s always a bad sign.”
You huffed and raked your hands through your hair in frustration. “Seriously? It’s Jill’s own choice to sneak out and that has nothing to do with Kirby. All you really have on her is that she’s a shit driver.”
Judy gasped and she raised a scolding finger up at you. “You watch your mouth around your brother, young lady. Bet you learned that awful language from her.”
Your eyes nearly bugged out of your head at your mom’s audacity. “Jesus mom, Kirby’s not the only teenager that swears, you’re so obnoxious sometimes.”
“That’s it!” She stood up and stomped her foot on the ground. “You aren’t allowed to be friends with her anymore!”
You jumped out of your seat and let out a hysterical laugh at her crazy behavior, “Seriously!? Do you not hear how ridiculous you sound?”
“You better quit while you’re ahead missy.”
You scoffed, the anger coursing through your brain making you feel very bold, “You know what mom? I’m not gonna quit while I’m ahead. I’m sick of you trying to decide who I can and can’t be friends with!” Your lip curled up in defiance and you decided to continue, “You always do this. You always try to put yourself in charge of who I hang out with! I’m done with it. It really pisses me off.”
She looked shocked at your outburst but you didn’t care. She refused to listen to you when you talked calmly so if you had to raise your voice to finally get your point across to her, you would do so gladly. “I don’t know where this behavior is coming from Y/N Hicks but I expect an apology right now.”
You laughed loudly at her words. “No! You know what mom, I’ll tell you where this behavior is coming from. I have no friends because of you! No one at school invites me anywhere because they only see me as the deputy’s nark daughter. And the people who do hang out with me? They all leave!” You threw your arms up in the air wildly, “They either leave because you bust their party or because you force me to push them away!”
At this point your face is bright red as the words spew out of your mouth. You feel frustrated enough to explode. Little Wes sits in his chair, completely silent as he watches the two of you argue.
Your mom speaks up, tone quiet in that way that means you have most certainly crossed a line, “I’m keeping this phone.” She waves your phone in front of you and you want to double over and scream loud enough to shake the whole house. Clearly she hadn’t cared about a word you said.
“Good! I don’t need it anyways!” You trudge over to the entryway and throw your coat over your shoulders, hearing your keys jingle in your pocket at the erratic action.
“And where do you think you’re going?” She yells from the dining room.
“Anywhere but here!” With that, you fling yourself out of the house.
***
Your tears have diminished to sniffles at this point. Part of you feels broken and you don’t know what you’re supposed to do to fix it.
Lost in the crooning sound of the radio and your racing thoughts, you don’t notice the figure creeping towards your car.
The sudden tap at your window causes you to let out a terrified shriek. Your knee knocks into the horn as you twist towards the source of the tapping noise and you scream even louder at the powerful beep that rings out into the dead of night..
Your chest rises raggedly as you hesitantly trail your eyes up the figure that looms outside your window. The panic that took over your body calms slightly as you realize that it’s just a girl. You do feel a bit nervous as you recognize the girl to be Samantha Carpenter because even though you were mad at your mom, it doesn’t escape your mind that she had incessantly warned you to stay away from the girl standing outside your car.
She doesn’t look like she’s going to harm you now, with the amused twinkle that sparkles in her brown eyes, so you roll down the window and chuckle awkwardly, “Um hi?”
A teasing smirk stretches across her face, “Hello there. Didn’t mean to scare you half to death.”
You try not to blush at the reference to your moment of panic. “No, don't worry about it, you didn’t.”
She gives you a look that says you’re full of shit but smiles despite the fact. “So,” she draws out lazily, “What brings you here at this time of night?”
It’s then that you notice the hazy look that’s in her eyes and with what your mother had told you about the girl, you note that she’s probably under the influence of some kind of drug right now. “Uh,” you struggle for a cool sounding response before lamely gesturing around. “Same as you.” You resist the urge to facepalm as your retort comes out as more of a question than a straight response.
She huffs out a laugh and something inside of you flutters at the sound. She cocks an eyebrow at you, “Oh really? So you mean to tell me the deputy’s daughter is out here high off her ass from whatever drug she had managed to scrounge up for the night?”
Your eyes widen comically, but a grin makes its way across your face regardless. “Yup.”
Samantha seems to find your act kind of funny and you internally cheer and congratulate yourself, before mentally sighing at just how corny you are.
The lanky girl walks around to the other side of your car and motions for you to unlock the door. Curiously, you do. She quickly steps inside, making a small noise of approval at the warmth she’s provided. It’s then that you notice that she hadn’t been wearing a jacket, her (very) muscular arms completely bare in the black tank top that stretches across her form. Dumbly, you fish out your favorite jacket from the backseat and wordlessly offer it to her. She looks at it with interest but leans up to put it on anyways. You think you imagined it, but for a split second you swear her tan cheeks darken slightly.
She clears her throat and the charged atmosphere that had filled the car moments ago disappears with the action. “Clearly I know who you are, Y/N Hicks, so tell me, why would Judy Hicks’ daughter allow a complete stranger into her car?”
You think for a moment but shrug, “Some company is actually just what I needed right now.” She nods in understanding and you continue, this time bearing the teasing smirk on your own face, “Plus, you’re not the only one with a trick up their sleeve. I know who you are too, Samantha.”
A cheshire grin spreads across her mouth. You think it suits her. “Oh yeah? Mommy told you about me then?” You nod and she barks out a laugh, “All bad things, I hope.”
You chuckle at the mirth that has appeared in her expression. “Most certainly all bad things. I swear that’s all Judy Hicks is capable of seeing.”
She seems to pick up on the heaviness of her tone and you wonder if the drug she has taken has given her some heightened sense of perception. “Things don’t seem to be all perfect in paradise.”
“You don’t know the half of it.”
Sam smiles but it looks more like a grimace, “Believe me, I do.”
The two of you fall into a comfortable silence. You wonder what exactly happened to Sam to lead her down this path, but you know better than to ask. Despite your mother’s constant warnings, you find that Sam is actually really refreshing to hang around. She sees the world for what it really is, cold and lonely. It’s a nice change of pace to what youre used to being around.
The peaceful atmosphere is broken as she reaches into her pocket and fishes out a pack of cigarettes and a lighter. She waits for a beat, anticipating you to chastise her, and looks pleasantly surprised when you don’t speak a word. Your eyes remain locked together as she places the stick into her mouth, rolls the window down, and leisurely lights the cigarette.
After she takes a long drag, she looks at you curiously. “Y’know you’re nothing like what I thought you’d be.” You motion for her to continue and she does after a short moment, “I figured you’d be a cheery brat like your mom and that you wouldn’t even give someone like me the time of day.”
The last bit of her sentence causes a sad pang to vibrate through your chest. You frown and give her a soft look, “Someone like you? You seem really nice Sam.” She looks at you like you’ve grown three heads, clearly not believing you. “I’m serious,” you say gently, “you must be such a strong person to keep pushing through whatever it is you’re going through. I don’t know you that well, but I know enough to be able to tell that you’re a good person.”
Her eyes brim with tears and she doesn’t even flinch as they spill down her face. Her cigarette, now forgotten, falls from the hand that had been dangling out the window and onto the uneven pavement below. You pull her towards you into a tight hug. After a while of her sobbing softly into your shoulder, she pushes away slightly to meet your eyes. Your heart breaks at how small she sounds when she whispers a tiny thank you up at you.
You brush the hair out of her eyes and lightly thread your fingers through it. She melts into the contact and you want to cry at how adorable she is.
The two of you sit like that for what feels like hours, but is more than likely just a few minutes.
She finally pulls away from you completely and settles back into your passenger seat. Her smirk reappears and you smile at the sight. “Drive. There’s someplace I want to show you.”
You’d known the girl for all of five seconds yet you could already tell that you’d likely do whatever she asked of you, your mother’s opinion be damned. If she had asked you to climb up the rooftop of an abandoned building, you’d likely say yes. And if she had asked you to stay with her up on that same rooftop for the rest of the night, you’d probably (definitely) agree. And if, when the sky began to display a mixture of pink and orange tones, she shyly asked if she could kiss you, you’d press your lips softly to hers in a heartbeat.
Bonus A/N: I've never written a flashback before so I really hope that part turned out okay :)

When your mates are two gods, your heat is something of a girl’s wet dream. It was honestly more enjoyable than any daydream. Your mates took a week off and in turn your heat was spent with day and nights of knotting. By the end of it, you had to buy a new bed and also new bed sheets. It was rare for any of you to be wearing clothes, except when eating of course.
You ensured that the moment your heat finished, that you three went house shopping. Though, you struggled to choose. If it was by the woods, it doesn’t have a farm like Clark wants. If it has a farm, it isn’t by the forest, like you want. And if it has both, it isn’t big enough like Thor wants. It was starting to frustrate you. Your own bachelor flat is growing small, especially with all the boxes standing around.
Or maybe it’s more than that that is irritating you. “Thor! You’re late. Now dinner is cold, and I’ve already packed the plates away. Cold pizza and paper plates for you.” You scold at the God of Thunder, not even greeting him. He frowns, turning to his fellow Alpha. He drops his hammer and hangs up his cape.
He shakes his head and then, without warning, pulls you closer by the waist and giving you the most passionate kiss. And when you come up for air, the anger has dissipated from your eyes. “Hello, my dear omega. Why yes, I have missed you, my dear.” He gives you his charming smile and then your legs are Jello.
He then lets you go, after hearing your phone call. He sits down on the couch next to the other Alpha. “Hello, my pretty boy.” Thor smiles, lifting Kal’s chin and giving him a sloppy kiss. “What’s got our girl so fussy?” He asks, pulling the other alien into his side. “It’s the same as yesterday, we’d gone to 5 more house showings and none of them were ‘just right’.”
“Hi mom,” You call into the phone after picking up Martha’s call. “Hello dear, so nice to hear from you stranger.” You can’t help but laugh. You’ve gotten really close to her over the past few years. “Yeah, I’m sorry. We’ve been so busy. You’d be really happy to hear that we’re trying for pups.” You can hear the excited squeal from the phone.
“That is such good news!” You can hear the birds in the background. “Not only that, but we’re looking for a new house. Clark wants a farm, Thor wants a million pups so a million rooms and I want something by the forest. Our apartment is already packed up but we haven’t bought any house yet.” She sighs, looking at the state of her normally neat apartment.
Martha is quiet for a moment. “Why don’t you move in with me?” She asks, and you bite your lip. “I have the farm, it’s right by the forest and it has 6 bedrooms. One for me, one for you three. That leaves four extra bedrooms.” It’s sounds almost too good to be true. It’s exactly what they want. “I’m growing old and I miss the company.” She adds, trying to win you over.
“Hold on.” You put your own mother-in-law on hold. You scatter over to your partners, plopping in both of their laps. “What if we move in with Clark’s mom? She has the big empty house, the farm, the forest.” You give them the biggest doe eyes you can muster, pushing out your bottom lip.
“Of course, my lady, whatever makes you happy.” Clark gives a similar reply to Thor. You return to the phone call. “It sounds like a fantastic deal. The boys agree. We can’t wait!” You squeal out, hugging your partners closer before finally saying goodbye to Martha.
You yawn, stretching out your body. The boys didn’t allow you to lift a single box and yet you still feel exhausted. You’re starving but there is nothing that seems like it would stay down. “Are you alright, dear?” Martha ask, handing her a glass of water. “I don’t know, I’m just so tired and so hungry but so nauseous.” You mutter, swallowing the stomach acid with the water.
“Dear, that doesn’t just sound like fatigue or a stomach bug.... You said you already had your heat, yes?” You can only nod to her question. “Lucky for you, I prepared for this. There is pregnancy test in your ensuite.” Your feet moved faster than your body. Your partners went to get dinner, not wanting you or Martha to cook after a long day of unpacking.
You wait in anticipation, sitting on the bathroom floor waiting for the timer to go off. And when it finally does, you feel the panic rise in your throat. Why you’re panicking, you’re not entirely sure. Maybe that once Thor knows, he’s taking you straight to Asgard, no questions. Your legs are shaky, you grab the test from the counter.
Two pink lines.
Pregnant. Very pregnant.
There is a knock at the door. “Hello dear, dinner is here.” It’s Clark, relief forms in your stomach. Your shaky hands open the door. You have to tell them. They’re your Alpha’s. They know what is right for you and your pup. “Are you okay?” He asks, wiping the tears which had fallen without your knowledge.
Your only reply to him, is the tick in your hand. His brows furrow before you clarify it to him. “I’m pregnant.” It takes a moment to realise in his head, before he scoops you up into his arms. He gasps and yells with glee. So much so that Thor comes running up the stairs. “What is the matter?” He asks, seeing your close embrace.
“We’re going to be dads!” Kal exclaims, knowing just how choked up you are. A huge grin covers Thor’s face. He pics the both of you up in a huge bear hug. “I can’t believe it!” Tears are forming in his eyes and it too makes you want to cry even more.
“We must haste for Asgard, at once.” Thor exclaims, looking to repack all your clothes. Or even leave them there and dress you completely in Asgardian clothes. Both you and Clark.
Clark places a hand on Thor’s shoulder. “Please, Thor. We’ve just moved, she hasn’t even had chance to nest yet. I’m sure she wants to tell her brothers too, before we leave.” He reasons, he could smell the anxiety coming from you when Thor came up the stairs. He knows going to Asgard is for the best but, certainly it can wait?
It doesn’t much but two pairs of whimpering eyes for Thor to cave. “Fine. But we’re not staying past the first trimester.” His voice is stern and there is a hint of Alpha voice. The other mates bare their neck, showing that they submit to these rules. “Can we invite my brothers then, next week?” You ask, placing your hand on his chest.
“Only if we get kisses.” Clark commands and you smirk at his dominance. He’s so soft at times, you do appreciate it, he and Thor balance each other out perfectly. With that you obey his order. Giving them both a deep sloppy kiss.
Tumblr media
The sun shines through the bright balcony, the sheer white curtains blow in the wind. The bedsheets are dispersed and tangled between legs and arms. All you can see is blue. The light, sky blue of Thor’s eyes, avoiding your own. Then the rich, navy blue of Clark’s, also watching your Alpha’s move carefully.
Like Thor said, the day after your brothers left, he’d packed up everything and transported you to Asgard. Frigga was so excited to see you again. It was rare that you went to Asgard and it was usually short and sweet visits. You’ve never been here for more than a week and now you’re stuck here for nine months.
You can feel the burn between your legs, and the sticky mess coating your body still. “Do you have to go?” Clark asks, reaching out for Thor’s hand. The blonde god takes his hand and places a gentle kiss. “I do, I do apologize my loves, but my father has called for me.” He takes your hand and places a kiss as well.
It’s a strange feeling. Back on earth, whenever Thor was home the both of you would have his full attention. Now that he is back home, everyone wants his attention. His duties as Prince and Alpha take more of his concentration that you thought it would. You’re glad you have your other Alpha, but still.
When Thor’s gone, you miss him. When Clark’s gone, you miss him.
Then he bends down and plants a soft kiss on your stark-naked belly, there’s rarely a bump, rubbing circles before eventually standing back up. “Love you, my loves,” he waves goodbye before leaving for his day of duties. You groan at the sunlight and roll over into Clark’s arms.
He lets out a chuckle and soon he hears your snores again. The maids come in soon though and he asks them to fill the tub. When the time comes, he picks you up bridal style and carries you to the bathroom. “Noo, let me sleep.” You complain, but when the hot water hits your back the complains die down.
Soon enough, Superman joins you in the tub. But the silence is so loud and you finally decide enough is enough when Clark lets out a loud sigh. “What’s wrong, my Alpha?” You ask, enjoying his touch as he washes your legs. “Just that. I’m an Alpha, I’m a superhero. I’m the Superman.” You furrow your brows but allow him to speak.
Again, he sighs, “I spent every day of my life protecting the people of Earth, before you, before Thor. Now, I’m here, mating day and night with lavish amenities and maids attending to my every need.” You can’t help but chuckle and lift yourself into his lap.
“Oh, my dear, are you feeling a bit unimportant?” You coo, wrapping his curls around your fingers. He laughs again, “Something like that. I can’t help but worry about them. They’re just so destructive to themselves.” Now you really howl at his words.
He blushes at your laughter. “My love, you do not owe them anything. Their own eradication is not your fault. Think of it like this, when Thor becomes king, the people’s own slaughter will be his fault. Because they chose him to be their protector. The other humans, did not chose you.”
You smile, hoping that you’re not sounding too insensitive. Also hoping that the words you speak of the Asgardians will never happen. He doesn’t answer, only drawing circles on your skin. “You threw that onto your shoulders only because you’re stronger.”
He can’t help but grin, you just know him so well. He groans and hides his face in the crook of your neck. “But they’re so fragile!” You roll your eyes at him. “If they’re so fragile, then I’m so fragile! So very weak, a weak human omega. Is that what you’re going to say to your child?”
Clark knows he’s really dug himself a hole now. “Huh? When your little boy looks up at you and says, ‘daddy I want to be like you some day,’ will you look down and say, ‘no, you’re weak, you half human.’?” It’s a rhetorical question but you can tell he still believes it.
“No?” He seems uncertain of himself. “Yes, no.” You nod to him, trying to guide him to the right answer. “No, I want you and our pups to stay home forever so that we can protect you. I’m sure Thor agrees.” He nods with a shit eating grin. You shake your head. “Quite the opposite, he’s very excited to take them into battle.”
Clark’s face goes pale, “The pups will grow up. They will spread their wings and will refuse to listen. They will get hurt. But they will learn from it and so must the humans.” He sighs and pecks your mouth. “What will we do without you?” He asks, picking you up out of the bath after cleaning you.
“You’d work for 160 hours a week and the other eight hours you’d just have hot gay sex.” You giggle to yourself; the pregnancy has made your tongue a little lose. Clark clicks his tongue at you, “You’ve got such a filthy mouth.” You can’t help but wink at him, “You should know.”

This whole celebrating-holidays thing has been a learning curve for us...this is the first year we’ve done birthdays, mothers day, valentines, etc, and the boys are taking it serious.  Little in particular.  I just heard him tell Big, “If you ruin mom’s first mom-day by drawing a penis on her card I swear I’m gonna Thanos you”, which is Littlespeak for I will straight up dust your ass into oblivion.  Then he shoved his fingers up in Big’s face to show him he isn’t afraid to do the snap if the situation calls for it.
Guess there will be no penises on my mothers day card.  Or if Sunday rolls around and half my family is suddenly vanished, I’ll know someone got creative with the crayons again.

Proposing Permission
Summary: You and Sonny have been together for a year but your idea of celebrating is slightly different than his. Set during S18 - roughly November 2016. Pairing: Sonny x Reader Warnings: None, except fluff...and maybe suggestive hints here and there ;) Words: 2479 AO3 here
Technically part 13 in the Changes verse, but can act as a stand-alone, too!
Tumblr media
“Mom!” you exclaim as soon as you hear her ‘hello?’ on the end of the line. “You'll never guess what just happened! – Wait, how'd you know? – He did? Of course, he did!” you laugh happily, flashing a bright smile up at Sonny who sits beside you on the sofa.
Sonny would give you the abridged version of the events that led up to this moment later, but at the time, things went a little like this:
-x-
“Uh, Carisi? Where are we going? The turn-off for the I-87 South, is that-a-way…” Amanda turns her body towards the traffic junction that passes by. She then whips back around to stare at her partner in the diver’s seat, a disgruntled look on her face.
“I need ta make a detour,” he states, eyes never leaving the highway.
“But we’re on a case!” she protests, growing irritated.
“Yeah, but we did what we came upstate to do. Got some answers, relayed them to Lieu. Technically, we’re off duty right now.” Sonny taps the wheel with his thumbs, trying to avoid his partner's gaze.
But Amanda Rollins is not one to concede so easily. “Tell me where we’re going, Dominick,” she drops her voice to a stern tone, eyes boring into the side of Sonny’s head.
Sonny lets out a nervous breath and says your name. “Remember how her parents live upstate? Well…” he reaches into the breast pocket of his suit jacket, producing a velvet box. Amanda gasps and nabs it from his grasp. She flips the little box open, finding a ring. “I wanna propose,” admits Sonny, “but I wanna ask her folks first.”
Dragging her eyes away from the box, Rollins frowns. “It’s twenty-sixteen, Sonny…you don’t need parental permission anymore.”
“I know, I know,” dismisses Sonny. “But that’s how my pa did it, and, she’s really close with her parents. It seems right to ask ‘em first.”
Amanda smiles in spite of herself. The gesture is very much a ‘Sonny Carisi’ thing to do. So, she cracks a joke instead. “What’re you gonna do? Salute her dad and say: ‘Requesting permission to marry your daughter, sir!’”
“Rawllins,” he groans, trying to act annoyed while keeping his eyes on the road.
“Do what you gotta do, partner,” she winks before turning her attention back to the box. “This ring is gorgeous!”
-x-
The drive was absolutely beautiful. Being October, the further away from concrete Sonny and Amanda drove, the denser the colourful forests became. It was picture perfect and Sonny’s only wish was that you could have been along to see it too.
Pulling up to your childhood home, Sonny leaves Amanda in the passenger’s seat. Afterall, this detour had to be relatively quick to prevent Lieu from breathing down his neck about it.
As Sonny makes his way to the door, his legs are a little wobbly and his pulse is racing. He has met your parents before and they adore him, yet, as he waits for his knock to be answered, his nerves get the better of him. This is a huge step and he hopes that they believe him worthy of it.
Then the door clicks open to reveal your mother. “Sonny!” she exclaims happily, but immediately her face falls. “Is everything okay?” In hindsight, an unannounced, unaccompanied visit does seem a little concerning.
Clueing in, Sonny immediate puts your mother at ease. “Yeah, yeah!” he reassures with a smile. “Work brought me upstate and I, uh, I wanted ta ask y’both somethin’ while I was up here.”
“Of course, of course!” Your mother ushers Sonny into the house before giving him a giant hug. Just as she releases him your father walks into the room, coming over with a large smile and firm handshake.
“Sir,” greets Sonny with a nod.
The three of them then take a seat at the dining room table; your mother unsurprisingly offers Sonny everything in her fridge. Once satisfied that he’s not lying about not being hungry, she continues. “So, son, what’s on your mind?”
The Italian swallows nervously. He looks to his fingers, thrumming them on the table top while his right knee bounces anxiously. Finally, he begins to speak: “Well, as you know, your daughter and I have been together for a while now and, we love each other very much. I love her very much.” A grin begins to break out on your mom’s face, her intuition giving her a good idea of where the conversation is headed. “And I, uh,” continues Sonny, “well, it seemed only right for me ta ask the two of you first. I w-wanna ask her ta marry me.”
Suspicions confirmed, your mother squeals with delight, grabbing onto your father’s arm and giving it a loving squeeze.
“I got a ring already and everything, if ya wanna see it,” Sonny adds quickly as if it will reenforce how committed he is to you. He pulls out the box once more and hands it over to your mom.
“Oh, Sonny,” she sighs looking up to your boyfriend. “She’s going to absolutely love it.”
“So, I, uh, have both your blessings then?” His blue eyes dart nervously back and forth between your parents.
Finally, your dad chimes in. “Of course!” he exclaims happily, his voice choking up ever so slightly. “You’re a good man and I couldn’t imagine my girl with anyone else.”
Sonny’s stomach does a somersault as he is immediately flooded with relief. “Thank ya!” he leaps to his feet. Your parents stand with him, both delivering their future son-in-law a squeezing hug. Parting, Sonny reluctantly explains that he can’t stay and that he must be getting back to the city.
“Alright, hon,” your mother coos. “Let us know what happens. Your secret is safe with us for now, but we’ll be waiting anxiously by the phone for the happy news!”
“Will do,” beams Sonny before he heads back to the squad car. Your parents wave him goodbye until he’s out of sight.
-x-
It’s your anniversary! One complete year of you and Sonny (finally) getting together! But…the universe really didn’t care about that. Nope! Because a faculty meeting was called on the one day where you didn’t have classes to teach. It ran from midday and into the evening and there was no possible way of getting out of it either. You loved your job, you really did, but today was supposed to be for you and Sonny. Nothing fancy, of course, but you had planned a lazy morning, followed up with cooking together and turning it into a romantic evening celebration.
“Uhhggghhh!” you groan, hanging your head and slouching your shoulders.
Sonny places his warm hands on your arms, grinning. “It’s alright, sweetheart.” You can feel those blue eyes shining down on you and, the next thing you know, a finger is gingerly tilting your chin up towards his. “I ain’t mad at all, okay? Shit happens. Jeez, how many times have I hadta cancel a date with you ‘cause I got called in or hadta work late?”
You bunch your mouth at the corner, frustrated. “I know, but it’s our anniversary and I was looking forward to spending all day with you!”
“So was I, but we can still make the most of it.” He kisses you on the nose. “I’ll go ahead ‘n make dinner and then when ya get home we can celebrate.”
“You sure? It was supposed to be a team effort. I can just grab some takeout on the way home –”
“Nonsense,” Sonny grins. “Besides, my cookin’ is way better than any takeout in the city.” His words make you laugh. “There’s that beautiful smile,” he beams, sweeping the hair back from your eyes.
“I love you.”
“I love you too, doll. Now, go on before you’re late ‘n try not ta fall asleep.”
You give Sonny a sweet kiss and make your way to the door. Before exiting, you flash a sultry look over your shoulder at your smiling boyfriend. “I promise I’ll make it up to you later, babe. It’s just a shame you have to wait so long to see what’s underneath this dress.” You slip out the door before you’re able to see the sign of the cross Sonny makes in attempt to absolve himself of his sinful thoughts.
-x-
The journey back home never felt so exhausting. Maybe it was the fact that the meeting seemed to drag on forever, especially when all you could think about was curling up next to Sonny. Your feet ached in your pumps and you cursed your wardrobe choice. Though, you were still new at the college and thus wanted to make a professional impression.
Once you finally reach your floor, a distinct cooking aroma floats down the hallway. Your stomach grumbles, knowing exactly which apartment is the origin and eager to taste what smells so delicious.
Opening your door, you are greeted by your wonderful boyfriend and his smiling eyes. He’s dressed up in a crisp shirt and slacks. “Welcome home, sweetheart and happy anniversary!”
You smile up at him and step into his outstretched arms. His attire seemed a bit formal, but you weren’t complaining. The way button up shirts hugged his arms and torso always made your face flush and heart beat a little faster. Those same arms also fit perfectly around you when he held you close.
As you begin to withdraw from his embrace however, you notice just how much Sonny is perspiring. “Babe, you alright?” Your brow knits with concern. “You’re sweating a bunch…”
Sonny quickly averts his gaze and turns towards the kitchen. “Yeah, yeah. I’m fine,” he gives a dismissive wave. “The oven’s been on all day.”
You know him well enough to tell that something is not quite right and his half-hearted answer gives you reason to follow him and press the issue. But as you round the corner, you’re stopped dead in your tracks by an elaborate display.
Sonny has gone all out. A hearty meal sits steaming on a table set for two, a single rose in a crystal vase resides at the center, and he’s even arranged some of your candles to provide low lighting. The sight of it all leaves you feeling as though your heart will flutter right out of your chest.
"Sonny," you whisper, hand over your heart. "You didn't have to do all this." You then peer up at him with glassy eyes.
"I wanted tonight to be special. Just you ‘n me celebrating a whole magical year of being together.”
Closing the distance, you lean up and place your lips tenderly to his. Sonny bends forward, deepening the kiss. You run a hand tenderly up the front of his shirt feeling the contours of his muscles beneath your fingers. Sonny reaches to cover your hand with his, grasping it carefully and reluctantly pulling it away. Breaking apart, he smiles, "Food's gonna get cold, doll."
The two of you sit down to a quiet, romantic dinner, clinking glasses in a toast to your relationship. But Sonny still has beads of sweat forming along his brow. "Babe, are you sure you're alright?" you point to his forehead. "It's not that hot in here..."
He swallows thickly, looking away. "Yeah...I'm just a little nervous is all." Sonny then focuses on you with big, blue eyes.
Yours narrow in confusion. Nervous? Why would he be nervous? It just us here...
Sonny flashes you shy smile before reaching across the table to take your hand in his. He stares at it in contemplation as he runs his thumb lovingly over your knuckles.
Biting his lip, he shifts those gorgeous eyes back to yours. "We've been through a lot in a year, doll," he begins. "And last summer I never knew how my life would change when you walked through that squad room door. I never knew that I could love someone so completely until I fell in love with you. My whole heart is yours and -"
"Sonny!" you release a sweet laugh. "You don't owe me a speech! I know how much you love me, silly! And I hope you know how much I love you too."
Suddenly, Sonny seems a little terrified. Had he rehearsed this or something?
"Just hear me out, ‘kay?" he implores following a shaky breath.
You smile softly and squeeze his hand signaling for him to continue.
"Believe me, doll, I've never felt more loved by anyone but you. I love waking up with ya in the mornin' and fallin' asleep together at night. My heart skips a beat thinkin' about a future with you. So, I guess that's why I'm sweatin'."
All of a sudden the warmth of Sonny's hand disappears. He shifts to get up from the table, slipping his fingers into his pocket. Then you realize that he's getting down on one knee. Your heart begins to thunder in your chest and a gasp catches in your throat.
Sonny's eyes lock onto yours as he produces a velvet box and opens it. There sits a white gold ring topped by a dainty solitaire diamond. Your eyes immediately rim with tears as you hear Sonny softly speak your name. "Will you marry me?"
A large smile erupts upon your face and you instantly blurt out a "yes!"
Sonny's expression changes to one of pure love. He delicately slips the ring on your finger and quickly rises to capture your lips in a kiss.
You wrap your arms around his neck and he effortlessly scoops you up. "I'm so happy," you speak against his lips, eliciting a tight squeeze from your fiancé.
Fiancé! Sonny Carisi is your fiancé! The man you love with your whole heart. You've always believed that it isn’t the ring on their finger that make two people married – that’s at least how committed you feel towards Sonny – Yet now, you couldn’t be happier to make what you share official.
"I'm so happy too, doll! I love you! I love you! I love you!" Sonny reciprocates in between swift kisses to your cheeks, nose and lips. Then his eyes darken and he bows his head towards your neck, nibbling and suckling at the sensitive skin that resides there.
You sigh, a tingling sensation spreading throughout your body. God, is he good at this! But then, your mind comes back to reality and you gently, albeit reluctantly, push him away. “Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait!” you chant, tapping your hands lightly on his chest.
Sonny pulls back but his eyes still hungrily flicker to where his lips were focused mere moments before.
“I have to go call my mom! She’d kill me if she knew I didn’t tell her right away.” You watch as Sonny smirks. “But then I promise we’ll celebrate properly…after all, you still haven’t seen what’s underneath this dress.”

Gentle
Well, it’s been a HELL of a 24 hours in the Hotchniss fandom, and I thought we could all do with some fluff. So, here it is in the form of a domestic Hotchniss mini-fic.
This is set in my Full House universe, which also has a follow up called Empty Nest
Words: 2,242
TW: Pregnancy/Sickness/Labour
It was her turn to put Ivy to bed, the little girl insisting for once that Emily did it. She didn’t complain, her daughter's requests were so rare for her that she jumped at the chance to do it. To watch her fight sleep as she read her a story, her grip on Emily’s clothing loosening as sleep finally won out.
Emily gently closes the bedroom door behind her and goes in search of her husband. She has to stop when she gets to the bottom of the stairs, breathlessness caused by the baby in her belly still taking her by surprise even at this stage of her second pregnancy. She feels her little girl shift around and smiles. She spots the dining room light is on and walks towards it, seeing her husband sitting at the table, intently watching his screen, headphones on.
He spots her almost immediately, and closes the laptop so quickly it makes her raise a brow at him. He takes his headphones off, and attempts to look nonchalant.  She rounds the dining room table and stands next to him, hip resting against him as he sits.
“You know I don’t mind if you watch porn, honey. I’d just rather you didn’t watch it where our children eat breakfast.”
Aaron flushes immediately, an outraged look flooding his face as he looks at her. “I am not watching porn, Emily.”
She holds her hands up and can’t help the smile that blooms on her face at his irritation. “Well what are you watching then?”
He sighs and opens the laptop, the screen displaying a YouTube video of a woman braiding a little girl's hair.
“Ok, not what I was expecting.” She lowers herself into the chair next to him, hand pressed into her baby bump as she does so, a grateful smile aimed at him as he helps her settle.
Aaron places his hand on her belly, smiling when he feels their daughter move around under Emily’s skin. “Ivy keeps insisting that I do her hair.”
“Because you’re her favourite.” Emily grumbles, the irritation in her tone fake as given away by her still present smile. It irked her sometimes, that their daughter was obsessed with Aaron when she was the one who had brought her into this world, but then she’d see them together and her heart would melt.
Ivy was always seeking Aaron out, wanting to curl up in his lap at any opportunity, or be carried by him everywhere. The way they looked at each other made Emily’s entire body sing with happiness, and it made every single thing that they had been through, together and apart, seem worth it.
That didn’t mean she wasn’t currently holding out hope that the baby she was currently pregnant with would be a mommy’s girl. It seemed only fair.
“Ivy keeps insisting that I do her hair.” He repeats, ignoring her comment about favouritism. “And I want to make sure I do a good job.”
He gestures towards the notebook next to the laptop, and that's when she realises he had been taking notes.
Emily has to bite her lip to stop the pure happiness that bursts in her chest from pouring out. Not for the first time she was wondering how on earth she had gotten so lucky to marry Aaron, to have his children. She still berated herself sometimes for not noticing him sooner, for the time they had lost in the years where they both just ignored what was clearly there.
“I love you so much.” She says, the words flowing from her so easily. “You’re such a good dad.”
Aaron smiles at her, and dutifully ignores the fact that she absolutely has tears in her eyes, a complete slave to her hormones at this late stage of her pregnancy. “I love you too, and you’re an amazing mom.”
She smiles at that, and a tear falls onto her face which she quickly wipes away, her frustration at her constantly wavering emotions clear. “You are so getting lucky tonight, Agent Hotchner.”
“Oh really?”
“Yes. As soon as you help get me out of this chair.”
______
Emily yawns as she reaches the bottom of the stairs the next morning, excited to drink the one caffeinated drink she was allowed a day, and is stopped in her tracks at the adorable sight in front of her.
Ivy is sitting on the kitchen counter, something that would usually make her nervous, with Aaron standing behind her putting the finishing touches on her hair, two dutch braids holding their 2 year olds unruly hair into place. Emily wonders how on earth their tiny daughter managed to convince Aaron to braid her hair before 7am on a Sunday, but it didn’t overly surprise her. The little girl was quickly learning there wasn’t much she couldn’t get her father to do.
“Daddy done?” Ivy’s sweet little voice asks, shifting on the counter like she’d been sitting there patiently for hours, when Emily knew it was likely only minutes.
Aaron chuckles and Emily watches as he secures the final hair tie. “Almost, sweetheart. You certainly got Mommy’s patience as well as her hair, huh?”
The look he throws over his shoulder lets her know that comment was purely for her, his first acknowledgement that she was in the room. She rolls her eyes at him and walks over, pressing a kiss to his cheek as she joins them at the counter. “Is Jack up?”
“He’s awake but still in bed.” He explains as he finishes his task, immediately picking Ivy up and hoisting her onto his hip. “All done.”
Emily smiles as her daughter grins. “You look so pretty, baby.” She leans forward and presses a kiss to Ivy’s cheek. “Maybe Daddy should do my hair.”
Ivy frowns at that, her grasp on Aaron’s pyjama shirt tightening. “No, my Daddy.”
Emily narrows her eyes at her husband when he laughs. “Well, how about Daddy makes us all breakfast?” She tickles the little girl's belly, smiling when a laugh escapes her. “And you and me go watch some cartoons?”
Ivy seems to consider it for a second before nodding, reaching for her mother with tiny hands. Emily gladly accepts her, shooting down any protests from Aaron on whether she should be carrying her when she’s 8 months pregnant with a single raised eyebrow, and holds her daughter close.
Emily presses a kiss to the little girl's head. “What do we think for breakfast? Pancakes?” Ivy nods enthusiastically and Emily smiles at her husband over their daughters head. “Pancakes it is.”
Aaron rolls his eyes but is already getting the pans out by the time Emily leaves the kitchen. She walks to the living room and places Ivy down on the couch before sitting next to her, the little girl immediately cuddling into her mother’s side, her hand pressed on her belly.
“Baby.”
Emily looks down at her daughter and pulls her slightly closer, lamenting briefly that her bump made it close to impossible. “That’s right, sweetie. Baby.”
Ivy frowns slightly at that, a look that makes her look exactly like Aaron, no matter what he said. She then cuddles into Emily, tiny hands grabbing at her shirt. “My Mama.”
Emily smothers a laugh by biting her lip, and mentally makes a note that they will have to talk to their daughter about sharing, again, before the baby arrives.
_________
He looks so worried when he enters her hospital room it makes her heart ache. Aaron gently slips into the room and closes the door behind him, their hours old baby in his arms.
“Hey, honey.” Emily rasps out, cringing at how exhausted she sounded even to herself. “You ok?”
Aaron fixes a look at her and walks over, sitting on the edge of her hospital bed. Expertly holding their tiny daughter with one hand so he can grasp one of Emily’s in his own. “No, I am not ok. You almost died.”
She tilts her head at him and smiles, her chapped lips sticking together. “I’m fine, Aaron.”
“You lost half your blood volume, Emily.”
“Hey.” She reaches up with her other hand and cups his cheek, the terror in his voice briefly overriding her need to hold her baby. “I’m ok. It was scary as hell, and I can’t imagine what it must have been like to watch, but I’m ok.” She smiles as he presses a kiss to her palm. “She’s ok too, right?”
He smiles then, the first real one since he walked into the room, and looks down at the sleeping bundle in his arms. “She’s perfect.”
“Can I hold her?” She had only held her for a fleeting second before everything went wrong, the baby snatched from her chest as quickly as she had been placed there when things started to get really hazy, really fast.
Aaron doesn’t hesitate. “Of course.” He passes their newborn daughter into her arms, careful not to knock any of the many IVs Emily has attached to her following the emergency that had come shortly after their youngest’s birth.
Emily smiles broadly at her newborn. “Hi sweet girl. Hi Audrey. You’re so beautiful.” She raises her up, her arms feeling weak, and presses a kiss to the baby’s head. “You look just like your sister did when she was a little baby.”
“You mean she looks just like you.” Aaron says, reaching forward to straighten the cannula Emily had her nose that was delivering oxygen to her. “I called Jessica, she’s going to bring the kids by in the morning. I’ve held the team off too, I thought you’d appreciate some time after what happened.”
She tears her eyes off of her baby and looks at her husband. “Thank you, I don’t really feel up to any visitors right now.” She looks back down at Audrey. “Plus I must look a state.”
“You look beautiful.”
Emily looks up at him with a raised brow. “You’re a liar, but you’re sweet.” She looks at Audrey. “Daddy is lying, Mommy looks terrible but you’re worth it.”
She flicks her head back, the hair that had been in the loose bun she had put it in at the start of labour escaping into her face. She makes a frustrated noise when it immediately falls back.
Aaron looks at her and gets off the bed in search for her hospital bag, digging through it until he finds her hairbrush. He moves back towards the bed. “Shift forward a bit.”
Emily looks up at him questioningly and shakes her head when she realises what he’s offering to do. “Oh, Aaron no. My hair is disgusting.”
“Em, sweetheart, we’re married. I’ve seen worse. You do remember your bachelorette party right? Or the aftermath at least.”
She knows if she was well enough she would have blushed, memories of him sitting with her on the bathroom floor when she was throwing up, cursing the day Penelope Garcia was born. Crying as he wiped tears, and vomit, from her face whilst she asked if he was still sure he wanted to marry her.
“Fair point.” She says, wincing as she moves forward enough for him to slip in behind her. Audrey cries out, and Emily’s attention is immediately back on her baby, soothing her with gently rocking and noises as Aaron does her hair.
“I’ll be gentle.”
“You always are unless I ask you not to be.” She quips, smiling when he grips her shoulder and mumbles something about her being ridiculous under his breath.
She sits there and feels as he brushes it through, trying not to cringe when stringy parts of it fall in her face as she thinks about how much she really needs a shower. It feels nice when he braids it, being as gentle with her as he is with Ivy, and she thinks it might be one of the most intimate things he’s ever done for her.
When he’s done he flicks the braid over her shoulder and pulls her back to rest against him, placing the brush on the bedside cabinet.
“Thank you.” She says softly, leaning her temple against his. “Ivy would be jealous.”
He laughs, wrapping his arms around her. “She can never know.”
Emily lifts Audrey to kiss her again, marvelling in the smell of her baby’s skin. “I better be your favourite, little one. Considering I almost just died bringing you into this world.”
“Emily.”
“Too soon?”
_________
All of their daughters, including the twins when they come along, end up insisting Aaron does their hair, and over the years the styles he can do get more elaborate.
It’s something she never shares with anyone, not even JJ and Penelope, because she knows he would be embarrassed by it, even though it was one of her favourite things about him. How much he loved their children, how absurd his huge hands looked braiding the hair of tiny little girls, so gentle in his touch that they never complained.
Years down the line when Ivy gets married she nervously asks Aaron if he’d do her hair for the day, one final reminder of her childhood, something he hadn’t done in a long, long time.
He’s thrilled. But insists on practising on Emily since he swears he is rusty at it now, the times when the girls would line up in the living room to get him to do their hair long gone. A fleeting memory of when they were small, and their house was full.
Emily lets him, and playfully argues with him as he insists on trying just one more time. She tells him, having had one drink too many at her eldest daughter's wedding, that she’s always liked him doing her hair too.

“during the dinner, entertain the guests, and kaa-san will be proud of you.” your mom says whilst brushing your hair multiple times. she sends you a threatening smile in the mirror which forms annoyance in your mind, yet a fake smile ghosts your lips. you clench your fist on your pockets, fingernails digging hard into your palms. last night she came to your door, unannounced, and mentioned that she’ll be having a private party after sending your applications to SNU Medical School.
“time to relax after working hard, a reward too for the parents.” you recall her saying, while running her fingers on your head before she shuts the door. the excitement evident in her movements when you hear the repetitive clicks of her heels. you play with the hem of your pajamas as you mimic your mother’s voice in distress, huffing after while you cross your arms on your chest. if she sees you roll your eyes or heave a disappointing sigh, expect a lecture about manners that'll go on for a few minutes.
when you entered middle school, she started to be strict and always repeated that you’re “only going to be successful when you’re on the top of the castle”. the metaphor she often forces in your mind—enjoying your success and growing money. watching other people force their way to the entrance, but this is where her persona morphs into something sickly sweet. she uses her shit ton of money to compromise, and those people leave as if they never disturbed your castle. in her eyes, you’re the embodiment of an independent, hardworking, and stepping on others kind of student which is something you want to erase.
“sit straight, act interested, act modest—”
“bring down the rivals, except kuroo.” you cut your mother off while a subtle smirk appears on your face, running your makeup brush on your powder blush before putting it to your cheeks. she stops for a moment, the silence makes your palms sweat on your school blazer, but relief washes over you when she murmurs okay, good. the moment is interrupted when your dad screams on the other side, assuming that he’s finding her and checking the table set-up for approval. she gives your shoulder a harsh squeeze before leaving you alone in your room, looking at yourself in the mirror.
“bring down tsukishima.” raising your brows, you try to keep yourself sane because people saying his name irks you. his stupid voice and looks down on you just because of the height difference. he looks down on you when he’s done harm to you years ago, and to the Hara family. when the school year started, you had no clue that he attended Yongsan School for Seoul. his presence immediately annoys you to your bones and when he talks, you have the urge to tape his mouth and watch him struggle and enjoy that he’s suffering. when he enters the room, you almost stand up from your seat and protest but you keep your lips shut. attempting to bottle your resentment and continue with the basic introductions and orientations for the school year.
what he did in middle school is the main factor why you resent him.
-
“your highness!” he yells as soon as you enter the classroom, sending tsukishima a sarcastic smile before you sit comfortably. you try your best to not be grumpy at eight in the morning. good thing that the teacher isn’t here, or you’re in for another lecture about that you should get along and be humble with your classmates.
lame lame lame.
“yeah, i’m a princess hm!” you point a finger at him while you put on a grumpy expression before putting your hands on your waist. huffing a few seconds later, you look through your bag and prepare your cute notebook and pencil. you begin to check the schedule for the day on the first page before reviewing the past few lessons, skimming it with attention that you mentally practice yourself, and clench both of your fists in excitement when you got the right answer. you cross your legs while checking your notes, eager to start the day because you're feeling productive, and seeing the stamps of stars on the first page makes you ecstatic.
-
“hara y/n, did you hit tsukishima?” your teacher’s voice is stern which scares you, but what frightens you is your mother hearing about the issue. you fiddle with your fingers as you rub your eyes, desperately trying to hold the tears threatening to fall. you and tsukishima are left alone in the classroom, with the teacher sitting across from you. the beautiful sunset view from the window is giving you temporary solace, releasing a sigh before answering.
“no, sensei! he- he hit me!” your voice unintentionally going higher, not realizing that you’re getting defensive. you stand from your chair and stare at him, fuming with anger when you see the smirk forming on his face. the teacher sighs in disappointment since he knows you’re one of the top students this year. your attendance streak is all green, never missing a day. what they don’tknow is how your mother forces you to always go to school no matter what happens, that school is the only path to success.
i hate tsukishima, hmph.
“she did, sensei. you saw her holding the book.” your patience is on thin ice because he has the audacity to lie in front of the teacher when he knows he did it. he slaps the book against the back of your desk and you feel the impact on your shoulders, resulting in a high pitched scream and break the momentum of your classmates writing and your teacher narrowed his eyes at you, shaking his head in displeasure before writing on the blackboard. then you hastily grab the book he's holding and about to throw it on his desk but gasps echo on the room. from their perspective, you're about to hit tsukishima with his book while he's looking across, focused on the discussion that's interrupted.
"you hit me with the book!" frustration slowly seeping out while you bounce on your desk angrily. your pigtails get tangled which fuels your irritation. life likes bad boys, you thought while mocking him by copying his expressions, forgetting for a moment that your teacher is watching you make faces on your own. tsukishima waves his hand, fisting his other hand to put it in the pocket of his purple jacket. the loud bell rings and ends the discussion, and you sulk on your seat while he prepares his things. your teacher walks out of the classroom to call your mom, you assume, because of the way he takes a glimpse at you while holding his phone to his ear.
i don't want to go home.
-
“i didn’t do it!” you keep repeating the same sentence as you set a foot in the house. your small hands clutch the strap of your backpack tight, agitated on what she’ll have to say on what happened. your teacher called your mom and had a quick discussion while you bowed to your mom before going home. the awkward silence caused you to grab your backpack and stand behind her, looking down on your shoes to distract yourself. when the both of you entered the car, she didn’t spare you a glance, even on the rearview mirror. the good thing is your favorite song is playing which soothes your worries temporarily. but the car ride was mentally exhausting and your nervousness kept boiling in your chest.
-
"the one time life is well! and you had to do that." sitting on the edge of your bed, disappointment and frustration join forces in your head while you clench your fist tight. tears trail down your cheeks freely and you have to grip your shorts so you wouldn't explode. hearing her sigh loudly makes you look at your hands to distract yourself from thinking while you sniffle quietly to yourself because your mom tells you to mask your true feelings with other people.
"i'm your princess! i didn't do it!" bouncing on your bed to defend yourself while she doesn’t say anything. she goes to your study table and grabs some of your books and pens. you looked at her in distress, tears forming in your eyes, since your mom's punishments are something you avoid if you have the chance.
-
“ah long time no see! come in!” your mom cheerfully greets when you see the Oikawa family entering the house, bowing down in respect with a sickly sweet smile plastered on your face. he acts like a prince charming when he bows, trying to charm your mother. she acts as if she’s swooned by his alluring smile before she rushes the family to enter the extravagant room, eyeing oikawa while he fixes the buttons of his school blazer. you and oikawa had a while you’re flipping the pendant of your necklace, the loud banter on the stairs a few meters away gets your attention.
“oh! kuroo looks dashing as usual!” she clasps her hands together, the gold rings on her fingers clashing and creating light noises which only you could hear. after they pick up on your mother’s voice, kuroo abruptly stops arguing and casually puts his right hand in his pocket. his mother gives you a soft wave and pecks your mother on the cheeks. you’re not in europe. the thought comes to mind while they chit chat. his father comes to the dining table, leaving you with kuroo for a few minutes. you extend your other leg in the front, putting your hands on your waist, and when you catch his monotone gaze. kuroo looks to the side while the tip of his ears slowly become red.
“ah! i’m glad our parents are okay.” you whisper in front of him while you pat your cheeks and put on your serious expression because your mother always tells you to act elegant when there are guests. a sympathetic smile appears on his lips, knowing why you changed your face in seconds—because you have a reputation to hold.
“mhm, okay talk to you later.” he says before lightly bumping your shoulder with his fist which you return with the same force while a smile dances on your balmed lips. the both of you don’t notice his mom’s gaze softening because of your brief chat.
“yuuji! you should’ve brought your vest!” your mom giggles when she hears the voice of the Terushima family. her covers her mouth with her hand (also her way of showing off her accessories). his mom’s voice is pretty loud so you hear her clearly when they’re on the stairs. a childish whine leaves his lips while his almond eyes begin twinkling in excitement seeing the grand decoration on the entrance. “oh hi y/n! pardon me, and yuuji.” his mom is always enthusiastic and humble.
you raise a brow when you notice the piercing on terushima’s ears. “you pierced?” you point a finger at his ear before the smirk on his face grows, knowing that you’re not allowed to get pierced or tattooed under your parent’s household.
“yeah, you want one?” he leans in with a teasing smirk on his face and slowly licks his bottom lip, and you get a glimpse of his tongue piercing. a tsk leaves your lips before you push him away with your clenched hands. your mom intrudes in your conversation and pulls you to her chest. your mom’s thoughts about you not listening to her and actually getting piercings are running like a hamster on a wheel. his mom covers her face with the palm of her hand, thinking that she won’t get used to terushima bragging about his piercings and possibly influencing his friends to get one. your mom giggles about him and repeatedly pats his back, escorting the Terushimas to their seats at the table—a long and wide one she bought for this day, and a few hours later, the cleaners will struggle to put the furniture back on the basement.
“ah n/n! wait for tsukishima, alright?”
your mom waves her fingers with a smile plastered on her face, leaving the entrance in your hands. going rebel sounds intriguing but you decided to go against it. you intertwine your fingers together and put them behind your back, walking around back and forth along with an occasional twirl because the black skirt whirling is satisfying for your eyes. annoyance bubbles in your chest when she mentions his name, and the fact you’ll escort them all the way to their seats at the table. relief courses through you when she picks their seats further away from your vision.
good, i can’t stand his golden eyes at—
-
“dear y/n, always elegant like her mother!” your dad mentions while the food is being served. the maids delicately hold the plates even though the appetizer only consists of green leaves, a drizzle of oil and other vegetables mixed in. a confident smile comes to your face while the boys giggle along with their parents, knowing that they nudge their waist to go with the flow and attempt to be your parents’ right hand and be their disciple. kuroo kicks your feet under the table while a subtle smirk on his face, and before you could misunderstand his intentions, he eyes the other parents then quickly rolls his eyes after. the clanking of the plates and forks begin to ring your ears and you immediately connect the clues on what he likes to say.
look at them, trying to get on your parents’ side.
you lightly slap his knee with your foot to get his attention, and you successfully do so while not realizing that about to take a bite of the vegetables. while kuroo thinks about embarrassing himself, again, despite that your parents and the other boys are lost in their own conversations, you take a big bite of everything that’s on the plate, not noticing your mom’s stern gaze on your figure. when he’s finished fixing his hair, he raises his brow while you cross your arms over your chest, nodding in defeat while rubbing your forehead, mimicking those disappointed adults you’ve seen in dramas. he covers his mouth while his eyes crinkle, controlling the laugh he desperately wants to let out. you massage your shoulder for a moment because it’s getting uncomfortable but you have to keep your act—act like you have your shit together in front of the guests.
“oh! oikawa-kun, how’s the japanese lit for you?” initiating a conversation between your rivals while the parents reacted quietly to themselves, as if they’re going to witness harsh exchange with words until emotions overtake your head. this is the sky castle, you think while straightening your posture, satisfied when you get a glimpse of him jolting on his seat before putting on his charming facade and entertaining your question.
“easy peasy! bet i’ll get a perfect score.” he runs his hand through his hair, fixing his school blazer and acts mighty with the other people around.
terushima begins to tease him by making faces to push oikawa’s buttons, and you tap your mouth with the tissue before dropping the bomb and witness his face morph to dread. “you know that i check the papers too, right? you’ve got three mistakes already.” bring down people so you can walk forward, you think while oikawa’s eyes are large like the globes you use for geography class. you loosely intertwine your fingers as you press your cheek on your palm. your mom peeks at you, amused, at your actions that she fights the urge because a smile is threatening its way on her deadpanned face since the beginning of the dinner. the other parents whisper to themselves, especially Oikawa’s parents who look at you with distaste occasionally when they talk. the maids are astonished with your attitude since you're a sweetheart, in the time where your mom is out and does her daily shopping to further decorate the house.
as the dinner continues, you're mentally patting yourself on the back for doing a great job to keep your castle undisturbed. you didn't notice the blonde fighting the urge to smirk to himself because it's the first time he witnessed you being brazen. he takes a big sip of the water, stretching his hands and resting it on his back as he catches your eyes which widens his smirk. resulting to strengthen your rage—and the fact that you're enjoying how attractive he looks.
ugh, let's get this over with.
-
“what? never expected me to be on top?” a condescending tone laces your voice as you cross your legs, the exhaustion you carried throughout the dinner is dissipating when you rest your back on the chair. feeling a certain pair of golden eyes piercing your soul, you intentionally ignore the sweating of your palms and curl your toes inside your shoes because you keep moving as long as you feel his eyes focused on you. the sassy persona you’ve worked hard lasting long is crumbling, as if tsukishima is taking his time to disassemble the pieces.
“finally we’re away.” terushima whispers to no one before running his fingers on his hair. all of your parents settled on the tea room as your mom calls it to chit chat and relax for a few hours and you know she'll subtly brag about your achievements in school and the furniture around the house that are only available to the rich she quotes.
"away from our parents who force their dreams to us? hell yeah." oikawa added before stretching his neck, the table erupting into laughter because what he said is the truth.
"hey! too mean." narrowing your eyes at him and seconds later you realized how contradicting you are. you scold the brown haired for being mean (when he only said the truth) yet you call oikawa earlier on the dinner for having three mistakes on the test of film studies. the silence stopped you from saying something further so you sit back, looking at the lights and decorations hanging on the wall so you won't embarrass yourself further.
we're even i guess, oikawa whispers under his breath before looking at you, his smile not reaching his eyes. you slap your cheeks while you're looking hard at oikawa, not noticing how the blonde plays with his fingers before looking at you, his eyes glimmering of mischief. since tsukishima knows what pushes your buttons and he always uses it to his advantage.
"stop the good girl act. you feel that way too, idiot." he cleans his glasses with his vest while his eyes narrow and look at you. as you look up and stare at him, you’re perplexed seeing him without his glasses and get amazed on how golden his eyes are. while your arms are flat on the table, his words earlier came back crashing on your head. good girl.
“good girl act, huh? why? you want me to be a bad.. bad girl tsukishima-kun?” you retort back quickly, and you’re pleased with your counterattack since hearing low whistles and gasps beside you fueled your ego. you raise your brow with a mocking smile on your lips to taunt tsukishima even more, intentionally ignoring the repetitive beating of your heart. you felt kuroo kicking your ankle under the table but you dodge his kick since you didn’t want to be bombarded by his remarks because you know he’ll never let you forget about this moment.
“and what if i do, princess?” he raises his brow in return, resting his chin on his palm while cocking his head to the side, amused with your response but he wouldn’t let you know that. you’re obviously dumbfounded, hating the way he uses that nickname casually in a conversation. the uneasiness you’re feeling doesn't go away when you feel eyes on you, eagerly waiting on what you’ll have to say. you clear your throat and you’re about to say something when-
“okay! y/n you got ice cream?” terushima jumped in the conversation before the tension rose on the table. at first you’re bummed when he cuts you off suddenly but you’re glad because you’re not going to talk to tsukishima after this. nope, you keep repeating to yourself. you nodded and led the way to the kitchen, slapping your cheeks lightly with your fingers to snap out of it.
-
“y/n, suck it up and do the first move.” kuroo murmurs louder to mortify you before taking a bite of the ice cream from the glass, his smug expression makes you want to punch him right there. you playfully kick his chair while you mindlessly mix the spoon on the glass, the ice cream melting as time ticks by.
“what- i’m not- you jerk!" their eyes fall on you since your voice tends to get loud when you defend yourself, and you forget about that while kuroo annoys you on purpose. you grumble shut up under your breath, cupping your cheeks while a frown takes over your face. you angrily grab the scooper to get more desert, also denying the thoughts running in your mind and shake your head in the process while whispering no, that can't happen!
"you're screwed, my friend." kuroo waves his spoon in front of you and you grit your teeth in annoyance while a frown takes over your face. a part of you wants to give in and admit you’re feeling something for him but you’ll stick on what you’re good at-denying. you pout in defeat and sulk in your seat, your eyes falling on tsukishima sitting in the corner. he’s in his own world, taking a bite of the ice cream and repeatedly tapping his foot on the floor. you assume it’s because of the music he’s listening to because of his tangled earphones put on. when he caught your gaze you turned away a little late meaning he saw you. shame clouded your head and desperately try to distract yourself from him, and look at oikawa acting high and mighty, anything, so you won’t spiral back to your thoughts full of tsukishima.
“the hell!? no i’m fin-” he waves his hands and doesn't listen to your stalling, since he knows you’re doing that to convince yourself and not him. you scowl at him and cross your arms together, chanting to pull it together since you get aggressive when someone’s caught you so you cross your arms together and clench your fists. (you thought you’ll have wrinkles earlier than others because of how much you’re frowning).
“i saw what happened, don’t even.” he cocks his head to tsukishima’s direction with a grin on his face and he knew he conquered victory between the banter. you sent him a sarcastic smile before checking the others chat to themselves and hear the faint laughter of the adults in the other room. your mind starts to imagine what it's’ like to talk to your crush.
no didn’t say that!
“this is fun.” he added, which deepened your scowl and you clearly heard the teasing tone laced on his voice. you roll your eyes playfully while he ruffles your hair, and you’re bummed because you know he is right. don’t pull the bad girl card, he murmurs and twirls the ends of your hair. your thoughts halted when you heard the two words that brought you back to the situation earlier. you hold your breath while stretching your arms straight on the counter, hurriedly thinking of a witty response.
“hey! he looked good…” you closed your eyes quickly then you got a glimpse of tsukishima smirking and the way the nickname, princess, rolled off his tongue is making the tip of your ears faint red and sensitive. where’s the y/n that hates tsukki with all her guts? kuroo whispers and laughs hysterically after which caught the attention of the others. you know he’s teasing you for fun since you two often have light hearted banters. the urge to punch him in the face crosses your mind because there are times he knows and you know he’s right, it’s on you not wanting to admit it. his hand ruffles your hair once again before smoothly interrupting oikawa’s bragging, while your thoughts go on an overdrive in your head.
-
"miss pres! wait for me!" you stopped in your tracks and waited on the right side when you heard akari jogging to you. a dejected pout appears on her lips. she hangs onto your arm and grips it tight, catching her breath because you didn't wait for her outside after the film classes ended.
purposely digging her nails as her payback, because you didn't wait for her outside after the film class ended.
"damn, it's hard being the best friend of the student council president." she says with a defeated tone while fixing her skirt. your face scrunched up in response before walking together on the hallways. akari begins her rambling about the upcoming output your professor mentioned. you tightened your hold on the folders, frightened that the stack of folders will slip out of your hold since fate can be cruel, you muse while pushing the folders close to your chest.
"i can carry folders too, you know." her laughter echoed in the hallway when she saw your reaction! furrowed brows, a pout on your lips before you hesitantly gave half of the folders in her waiting hands. before you could explain what the folders are, you hear her gasp when she sees the title, in bold letters—CLASS 3 FILM STUDIES TEST RESULTS. she overheard you and the professor and learned that you're also checking the papers because professors trust you that much. akari likes seeing you lose your cool in public so she lifts the side of the folder. though it gets exhausting, you endure akari and her antics since despite her teasing she knows her boundaries. she's a good friend because holding the titles student council president, and top student scares away potential friends you could have. students gossiping about your family and status doesn't make things easier. so when she approached you in the library and blunty said you're taking her seat, you're grateful despite interrupting your study session.
it's safe to say that you didn't give each other good first impressions.
"miss pres, faculty room right?" akari's voice breaks your train of thought and wonders how you didn't hit anyone along the way since you take a few turns before seeing the faculty room.
"mhm."
-
“kari! let’s go back! i can convince sensei.” you whine quietly and stomp on your feet, you’re definitely ignoring your heart about to jump out of your chest when you see a glimpse of a blonde in front of the faculty room. after the party you held a few days ago, you didn’t pay attention to him and avoided him at all costs because you’re trying to figure out if feeling something to your rival is a big deal or not. you tighten your hold on the papers, a pout coming to your lips while akari is amused on what’s happening right now. she’s clearly not expecting you to go to the other way and avoid confrontation with the blonde.
“he’s there! i can’t face him!” you added and jutted your lips into a pout. in your head, you could roast him with other people because you have a perfect reputation to keep. she sighs for a moment while you stand there, she transfers all the folders in her other hand before smacking you in your arm. a shriek leaves your lips, not expecting your friend to hit you in the hallway. you knew you lose the disagreement when you see her as if she’s saying really? i’m done with you through her face. she puts a hand on her waist while she steps on the floor. a habit of hers that you noticed through time. you fix your hair that’s blocking your sight before nodding your head.
“fine… whatever.” you narrow your eyes and point a finger on her direction, acting like you’re threatening her but it didn’t have an effect at her. both of you silently walk towards the faculty room and finally see tsukishima in all his glory. he’s slightly slouching in front of the door because of his height. you quickly look at the other classrooms, acting as if you never saw him and ignore your heart beating at a quick pace. you’re in front of the room, just behind him and realize how tall he is. he looks back and catches your gaze before he smirks and waves at the professor inside. (they are clearly victims of the good boy facade he puts, you think). akari whistles to herself before going inside and gives the folders to your professor while you follow behind.
“ah thank you y/n! and akari. you can have your lunch now.” you bow quickly and smile before you shut the door gently. you fix your blazer and pat your skirt before going to the cafeteria with akari. on the way she keeps teasing you about how you daydream of tsukishima when you’re in class. she keeps mentioning his smirk when you’re eating and you almost choked on the food, since yes, maybe his smirk is attractive you think, maybe, you repeated.
-
“how’s life with rich people?” she whispers since she accompanied you to the library because you’re planning your scenes already and what emotions you’ll pick for the montage output. you stopped writing and closed your notebook, and rolled your eyes playfully because you know what she really wants to ask.
“i know you’re asking about oikawa, so go.” you say while crossing your arms on the wooden table, and stretch your back after writing for twenty minutes. on the time you’re working, she’s humming random songs and twirls her pen on the papers she brought, scribbling lines and occasionally add doodles on the paper.
“tsk, at least i’m proud of it.” she comments while you gasp, wondering why kuroo and her keeps forcing you to admit you like him. it wasn’t that you’re uncomfortable, your answer remains the same, you have a reputation to take care of.
“anyway! i heard you were mean to him.” she adds while burying her head in her open book, it’s obvious that she’s bored but she accompanied you nonetheless. you stopped twirling your hair and you processed what she said. how did she know, you lamented to yourself while your brows furrow.
“terushima… he doesn’t shut up. he might’ve mentioned that.” akari massages her scalp while looking at you, she’s attempting to relieve the minimal pain she’s feeling in her head. you continued to write on how the scene will go but your sentences ended in scribbles. you’re terribly annoyed that terushima talked about the party even, it wasn’t necessary, you thought while biting your lip.
“agh! whatever. it’s the truth.” you cried out after contemplating for a few minutes. you lean back on the chair, drinking from your water bottle to hydrate yourself once in a while. you sigh in satisfaction when the cold water goes to your chest, awakening your sleepy eyes. the silence helps you gain your focus and plan your outfit and makeup on the montage, but akari breaks the silence with a question.
“yeah sure.. the truth. so when are you gonna admit that you actually like tsukishima, huh?” akari prompts her elbow while a cocky smile goes to her face. you hum and stopped writing, utterly confused with her expression.
“well i like him but- what?! you and kuroo should be locked away somewhere.” you rambled after realizing her true intentions of why she asked that question. you kicked her foot slightly under the table to get back at her. she hisses slightly while you bow quickly to apologize. you sigh before grabbing your phone and usher akari to take a selfie in the library, even though her face looks funny on the picture, you’ll still keep it. while she looks through the photos you took, you look at the window and many thoughts keep overlapping but one thought stands out. should i finally admit that i have a crush on him? what if he doesn’t like me though? those are the thoughts you pondered on on the way home and the next few months.
-
it’s been five months since those thoughts spiralled on your head, almost haunting you every night. this day marks the start of vacation, no more school work to do and you’re not pretending to be a good student on campus all year. it's been a few months since you passed the montage output and you remembered how your professor’s mouth is open while watching yours, it boosted your confidence. you picked unrequited and longing which seems two complicated emotions to work on a montage but that’s what you like about it. when you did your shoot months ago, you couldn’t forget the horror on kuroo’s face when he saw the smudged make-up on your face while your dress looked elegant.
you waved him off that time and continued to film the flowers dancing to the wind, the group of birds flying high, and you accidentally filmed tsukishima walking away while the sun hit his direction and it created a warm yet nostalgic vibe. that time he didn’t give you insults or anything but god, he was cocky. kuroo and oikawa noticed how things changed on the two of you, because normally they’d be seeing you going at each other’s throats. but you did your own thing, and you didn’t complain about filming him and instead he saw you giggling to yourself while looking at the camera. the black haired finally connected the puzzles together and came to a conclusion: you’ve come to terms that you like tsukishima.
-
“i really like him! believe me.” you defended and hugged the pillow laying on the couch. you invited tsukishima to your house to convince your parents that you like each other even though you’ve been together for a few months already. when you often walk with your boyfriend (calling him that still makes you blush), you always see oikawa and kuroo snickering to themselves, and you teased kuroo that he replaced you with another. sadly, your mom didn’t like the idea and she went to another country to calm down, you think. that time you realized where you got your sulky attitude from. your dad acts casual and asks questions one at a time. you’re grateful because you couldn’t handle many questions at once and the accusations you’ll hear from your mom isn’t what you wanted right now. your dad giggles when you act pouty and defensive, while tsukishima bounces his leg to relieve the slight to little nervousness he has, he convinces himself. it didn’t help when kuroo grip his shoulder tight and give a little speech on how to protect you and show how to care.
“she does… unfortunately.” he whispers the last word which infuriates you and hits his head with the pillow lightly. your dad didn’t hear what he said so he glares at you, shaking his head, as if he’s saying not to hit your boyfriend. you pout and cross your arms, and give him the face that’s supposed to threaten people but it doesn’t work for him. (one time, you realized you’re friends with people who have resting bitch faces).
“do you want me to be your enemy again?” you threaten him but you fail because a big smile goes to your face. you fix the hair clip on the back of your head to keep your hair away.
“sure if it means i can see you be angry but look cute.” he retorts back and while you're about to explode, from your peripheral vision you see your dad giving him a big thumbs up and an awkward wink. he sends him a nod and acts cool.
"hmm, now i get why you like each other y/n." your dad comments he pats the space beside him. tsukishima gently rubs your lower back before letting you go, even though his heart is beating wild in his chest. you sit beside your dad before tightly embrace him, relieved of his reaction to your new relationship.
"thank you dad. we'll protect each other, don't worry. you can kick him if he broke up with me though." you whisper the last part so the blonde wouldn't hear you (he's suspicious based on the narrowing of his eyes and the gaze you feel at the back of your head). he pats your back while giggling lightly and stand up. he enjoys seeing you lost in your world and see the genuine happiness glowing in your eyes. this is something he should've done sooner, he thought because all these years you're caged in this house, alone and lonely.
“tsu-ki-shima-kun, let’s go?” you tease him because he once told you that calling him like that stirs something inside him. you giggle and look to him softly, an indirect way of asking permission to loop your arms together. you respect his boundaries, always, even though it didn't seem like it a few months ago. he nods and pushes his glasses, and you loop them while seeing his ears down to his neck go a little red.
“hey, let’s go to the library. it’s quiet there.”
you get out of the house and wave to the idiots (kuroo and oikawa) as you call them before going to the library with him. you had nothing to study for and you knew why he wants to go there, with you, you just know.
this is the sky castle, the place where you bring down people to walk forward. but after thinking about it, walking together with tsukishima doesn't sound bad.

Troy Bolton x Reader
Words: 4327
Summary: Following the efforts of a smaller, eviler version of Sharpay, the reader doubts her abilities and her relationship. Troy must restore her faith in herself in time for the perfect Valentine’s day dance.
Notes: Can I Have This Dance is literally my favorite scene from the whole series so I had to use it for this. Highly recommend listening to it before reading to get the feel.  Let me know what you think! I’m so sorry it's so long, but I really loved getting into the romance. I’m pretty proud of this one, so just a little extra love would be very appreciated.  (There’s also a 17 Again reference in here, if you catch it) Also, I couldn’t decide which gif I liked more, so I had to use both!
-
You couldn’t help the slight squeak of fear in your voice as the group of girls walked towards you.
“Hi Sharpay.” You greeted anxiously. She flipped her impossibly shiny blonde hair over her shoulder. She really was terrifying when she wanted to be.
“I heard that you might be signing up to perform in the Sweetheart’s Showcase.” She raised an accusing brow.
“Oh, um, yeah.” You stammered. “I was thinking about doing a duet with-”
“Blah blah blah, I know that. What are you wearing?” Her glare intensified, as did your confusion.”
“I-I don’t-” “Just make sure it isn’t pink, okay?” Sharpay ordered and her little pack nodded in agreement. “Pink is my color.”
“O-okay.” Was all you managed to say. She and her posse strutted off, but Madison gave you a lingering stare. You gulped. Sharpay may be the leader, but Madison was the shark of the group. Once she smelled blood, she would not be stopped. And ever since you’d started dating the basketball captain…
“Guess who?” A pair of hands covered your eyes. Maybe it was from his time spent on the roof, but Troy always smelled like fresh summer air.
“Hmmm… Mrs. Darbus?” You giggled. Troy’s arms wrapped around your middle and lifted you off the ground, making you laugh more. He swung you around before setting you back and spinning you so you were facing him.
“Ha ha.” He snarked, eyes sparkling in a particularly suspicious way. “What did ‘Her Majesty’ want?” You shrugged.
“She told me I couldn’t wear pink for the show case because it’s ‘her color’.” You laughed. “I wouldn’t dare try to outshine the Princess of Pink.”
“Yeah… about the showcase…” Troy looked at the floor. You felt your heart drop a little.
“You want to back out, don’t you?” You sighed sadly. “I mean, I get it. Performing in front of everybody freaks me out too-”
“Woah woah woah.” Troy laughed, that sparkle shining brighter. “I was just hoping that you would wear this.” He dangled a chain in front of you. The necklace was a stunning heart-shaped charm made with little red gems.
“Troy.” You gasped, a smile stretching from ear to ear. “It’s beautiful.”
“I figured you’d be stressed out over the showcase and the paper so I thought you’d like a little early Valentine.” He shrugged and you pressed a sweet kiss to his cheek before turning around so he could put it on you. His fingers grazed your skin as he draped the chain around your neck.
“I wish I had something for you.” You whined, draping your arms around his neck as his arms fell to your waist.
“Just promise me a Valentine’s Day kiss and that is all I need.” He grinned and pulled you closer for a kiss.
It was quite a shock to the status quo when you and Troy started dating. The shy editor of the school newspaper and the star player of the basketball team made an interesting pair. But when Mrs. Darbus paired the two of you together to paint set in detention, something just… happened. You opened up around Troy more than you could with anyone. You helped him realize that there was more to him than basketball when you got him to sing with you at your vocal recital last year. Somehow the two of you just worked.
“I hate to interrupt,” Taylor scoffed. “But the yearbook won’t edit itself.” You gave your best friend a look and Taylor smirked.
“Sorry Troy.” Gabriella laughed, grabbing your hand and dragging you down the hall. “We’ll see you at lunch!” The three of you rushed down the hall and Troy went to go find Chad.
“Ugh, he is so dreamy.” Libby, one of Sharpay’s sophomore groupies, sighed. Madison made a sound of disgust.
“And yet somehow he got stuck with that.” She watched you vanish into the journalism classroom and closed her locker. “Shouldn’t the Crowned Prince of East High be with someone a little more, I don’t know, worthy of his attention?”
“Who, like Sharpay?” Libby asked, applying another coat of lip gloss. Madison smirked.
“Yeah.” She turned her head to the jersey-clad boy retreating down the hall. “Like Sharpay.”
-
“So can I have this dance?”
“Can I have this dance?”
Your eyes were locked together as the room erupted with applause. You were in Troy’s arms before you had the chance to move.
“You guys, that was amazing!” Gabriella squealed with excitement.
“I couldn’t imagine anyone better to sing it.” Kelsi smiled, tucking the music into her folder. Even Taylor was impressed.
“I still think you two should give it a shot.” Troy nodded towards Taylor and Chad. You laughed into his shoulder as excuses tumbled out of their mouths.
“Let’s go, I think my mom is making some nachos.” You laced your fingers through his and told everyone you’d see them tomorrow. After practice rehearsals were exhausting for Troy, but he knew how happy it made you. Besides singing with you was the perfect way to relax after a long day of practice of running and shooting hoops. Plus, your mom made killer nachos.
His truck sputtered to a start and he winced. You giggled and earned a playful glare. At least it started this time. Sometimes, the two of you were stranded in the school parking lot until Troy could get his truck to start. You never minded. With minimal bumps and jolts, Troy was able to get to your house.
“I think the song is really coming together.” You said as the two of you made your way to the front door. “Ryan said he’d love to choreograph something for us.”
“How sweet.” Your door opened and Madison gave you a seemingly innocent smile. You stopped so suddenly Troy almost walked right into you.
“Maddie.” You tried to seem pleasantly surprised. “What are you doing here?”
“Didn’t your mom tell you?” She laughed and pulled you inside- rather forcefully you might add. “My mom and her are in the same book club! She invited us to join you guys for dinner.” She looked over your shoulder and a little menacing glint appeared in her eyes. “Oh, hi Troy.”
“Hey.” He greeted uncomfortably, following you inside.
“I hope you don’t mind the extra company tonight.” Your mother beamed. “Julie was saying how excited Madison has been to work with you two for the musical and I thought it’d be fun for you kids to get to know each other.”
“That sounds great, Mr.s Y/L/N.” Troy put on that charming smile of his and pulled your chair out for you. Madison stood for a moment, as if she was expecting him to do the same for her. Being a gentleman, he moved her chair back before taking a seat.
“So you guys were talking about your number for the Sweetheart’s Showcase?” Maddie asked, eyeing Troy in a less than subtle way. He glanced at you with the same slightly scared look he had when he had to sing with Sharpay at the resort.
“Uh, yeah. Ryan said he had some choreography in mind.” Even after over a year of dating, sometimes the way he looked at you still gave you butterflies. “I mean, I think just singing would be fine-”
“You guys have to dance.” Maddie blurted. She flipped her hair over her shoulder- just like Sharpay, but like, pettier. “What I mean is, it would be so romantic, don’t you think?”
“I agree.” Your mom said excitedly. You shot a look.
“I’m sure what Ryan has planned will be great.” You concluded, hoping to drop the subject. You didn’t really want to discuss your super romantic duet in front of Madison.
Dinner passed painfully. The only thing keeping you from screaming out in frustration was Troy’s silly antics. From funny faces to pretending his chips were fighter planes, he distracted you from Madison’s subtly back-handed comments. The adults mistook them for compliments, but you knew exactly what she meant.
“Wow, I am totally beat.” Maddie exclaimed just as the parents started to go out to the porch, like adults do.
“Oh, I guess we’ll call it a night.” Her mom frowned.
“You stay and have fun, mom.” She smiled sweetly. “Troy can give me a ride. Right, Troy?”
“Um,”
“Great!” She practically skipped  to the front door.
“You really are too good to be true, Mr. Bolton.” Her mother gushed before stepping out onto the back porch with your parents.
“I’ll walk you out.” You said, not really sure if you were irritated, confused, or a little impressed.
“You’re coming to the game tomorrow night, right?” Troy asked as you made your way down the front steps. Madison was already in the front seat, checking her reflection in the mirror. You shrugged.
“Actually I was thinking about catching a movie.” His shoulders sagged with disappointment. You shook your head. “Of course I’ll be there!” You exclaimed with a laugh. Troy put his hands on your cheeks and leaned in for a goodnight kiss.
“Oh Troy!” Madison called from the truck and the two of you pulled a part. “I should be getting home. I’m totally-” She yawned dramatically, “exhausted.” Troy sighed, settling for a light kiss on your cheek. “Goodnight.”
“Night.” He reluctantly ran to his truck and you went back inside. Before the door closed, you couldn’t help but smirk as you listened to the sputtering sound of his truck refusing to start.
-
The sound of the crowd was a driving force on it’s own. Troy raced across the court, keeping his eyes locked on his teammate. Chad passed him the ball and he made the shot, that satisfying swish of the net drowned out by the cheers. After a tiring week of practice and rehearsals, his body was pumping with adrenaline.
“Go Troy!” He picked your voice out over the chorus of cheers. He found you at the edge of the bleachers towards the top and flashed you a smile before taking off again. Gabriella helped you hold up your #14 sign and Kelsi came back from concessions with the popcorn. You and Kelsi weren’t usually ones for sports, but ever since you’d started coming to games you’ve all had a blast. The buzzer sounded.
“That ends the third quarter here at Wildcat Stadium,” The announcer’s voice boomed. “Hornets 40, Wildcats 58.”
The fans hollered and you caught Troy’s eye again, giving him a grin that lit up the gym. He pressed his lips to his fingers and pretended to toss the air-kiss like a basketball. You pretended to catch it, accidentally stepping in the strap of the purse behind you.
There was a wave of gasps from the crowd and both teams stopped to see what the commotion was. Troy looked up to see a horrified Gabriella and an empty space where you had been standing.
“Y/N!” He yelled, running across the court to where a group of people had gathered, including the school nurse.
“Give her some space! Back up!”
“Let me through! That’s my girlfriend!” Troy pushed his way to the font. You were on the floor, but you were sitting up, trying to catch your breath.
“Is she okay?” Gabriella yelled down at him. Behind her, Maddison tossed her purse over her shoulder and vanished into the crowd.
“I think I'm okay,” You groaned. “Just got the wind knocked out of me.” You tried to stand, but cried out when a sharp pain shot up your let.”
“Take it easy,” Troy soothed, kneeling at your side.
“Where does it hurt?” The nurse asked.
“My ankle.” You moved your leg so she could examine it.
“Looks like it might be sprained.” She sighed. “Let’s get you to my office and take a closer look, okay?”
Troy put your arm over his shoulder and helped you stand. The nurse took your other arm and gave Troy a reassuring smile.
“I can take it from here. You go win this game, Mr. Bolton.”
“But-”
“I’ll be fine, Troy.” You kissed his cheek. “Go get em Wildcat.” The nurse helped you limp out of the gym and Gabriella and Kelso followed close behind.
Sharpay watched the whole scene from the very top of the stands, eyes narrowed with suspicion. She had seen Maddison pull her bag away just when Y/N fell and it definitely was not a coincidence. The little pirana was playing a dangerous game and Sharpay was not about to let her win.
-
The show case was just a night away and your ankle still ached whenever you stepped on it, even after a week. You tried not to let it show when Ryan was teaching you the steps, but they hardly let you practice at all. Taylor was furious you were still going through with it. Mrs. Darbus was at least more than willing to let you rehearse during homeroom.
“And, one two three, one two three,” Ryan tried not to sound irritated when Troy took another wrong step.
“Sorry.” He grimaced. Ryan just took a deep breath.
“Just start from ‘wherever we go next’.” He instructed and you tried to remember the steps. “And one two three and lift-” Troy lifted you up and spun the way Ryan showed him. When he set you back down, you stepped wrong.
“Ow!” You cried, stumbling backwards into the piano.
“That’s it. You can’t do this anymore.” Taylor said sternly. “You’re going to hurt yourself even more and then you won’t be able to dance at all.”
“I can do this. It already feels better.” You insisted and she scowled. Troy took your hands in his, the sweetness in those perfect blue eyes just making you feel even more guilty.
“We can figure something else out.” He felt awful for even pushing you this far. Tomorrow was Valentine’s day and you’d barely had a quiet moment, let alone long enough to destress. “How about we just call it a day? We can go to a movie tonight and just hang out. Just you and me.” You shook your head.
“I can get this. I just need a second.” You felt ridiculous storming out with crutches, but it was what you had. Troy moved to follow, but Gabriella shook her head.
“Just give her a minute.”
You didn’t notice the troop of girls following you to your locker and you were too frustrated to care. You could get this right. Troy had worked too hard with after practice rehearsals and countless hours going over the music with you for you to mess all of it up now. Sometimes you couldn’t help but think he was too good for you.
You opened your locker and watched dozens of paper Valentine’s float to the floor. At first, you thought this was a sweet gesture from your boyfriend. Then you actually read them. Talentless Freak. Get off the stage. East High’s Resident Loser.
“Looks like Y/N has an admirer.” Madison sneered and her group of underclassmen terrors erupted with cackles, drawing more people out of Darbus’ room. You set your crutches to the side and picked up one note in particular. Troy’s Tragic Charity Case.
Your heart dropped and the laughing just got louder. You couldn’t even run. You had to stand there and listen, looking at the cruel smirk on Madison’s face as the words echoed in your head over and over again. Charity Case.
“Y/N- oh my god,” Gabriella exclaimed, looking at the mess of fake Valentines. “Let’s get out of here. Taylor.”
“I’ll drive you home.” Taylor picked up your crutches and the two practically guarded you as you made your way down the hall.
By the time Troy got out into the hallway, most of the girls were gone, leaving only the notes scattered across the floor. He didn’t find you until you were already at Taylor’s car.
“Wait!” He yelled before you closed the door. “Where are you going?”
“I’m going home.” You sighed, brushing away a fallen tear. “Everyone is right. I can’t do this. Even if my ankle was fine, I couldn’t pull off something like this.”
“What are you talking about?”
“I’m sure you can find a better partner, Troy. There are girls that would kill to perform with you.” Or sprain a few ankles.
“Kelsi wrote that song for us.” If he kept looking at you like that, you’d break completely.
“I’m sorry Troy.” You shut the door and Taylor drove off. Gabriella put a comforting hand on your shoulder. You couldn’t bear to look back.
“It appears that I’ve lost three students.” Mrs. Darbus sighed, waiting for him back at the doors. “Care to explain?” Troy ran his fingers through his hair.
“She’s not going to perform and I can’t do it without her.” He couldn’t imagine singing something so personal, so full of emotion, with anyone but the girl that he loved. Mr.s Darbus just gave him a knowing smile.
“I suggest talking to her, Mr. Bolton. Show her the truth.” He opened his mouth, but she stopped him with a wave of her hand. “You’ll know what to do.” Her expression changed. “Now, I'm afraid that there’s quite a mess in the hallway I must take care of. As well as a few girls to track down.” She bowed her head and went inside.
Troy’s head was spinning. He needed to fix this. After a few ideas came to mind, he pulled out his phone. Mrs. Darbus was right. He knew what to do. Hopefully.
-
A light knock on the door pulled you from your sanctuary of blankets. Your mom slowly opened your bedroom door with a small smile. When she heard what happened, she had no problem calling you out for the rest of the day.
“Why don’t you come down for some dinner, sweetie?”
“I’m not really hungry.” You pulled a loose string from your quilt.
“I really think you should come downstairs.” Her smile grew suspiciously and she left the door open a crack.
Eventually, your curiosity got the better of you and you tossed your blankets aside. The lights in the kitchen were off and the doors to the patio were open. You stepped outside and gasped. The twinkling lights looked like stars and little notes hung from the trees. In the middle of it all stood Troy and a candle lit dinner, complete with a bouquet of chocolate covered strawberries.
“Glad you could make it.” Troy beamed, motioning for you to sit down. You did and he passed you a basket of breadsticks. “Don’t worry, my mom helped me cook.”
“Troy, this is…” You couldn't even find the right words. You started to read some of the notes. Deserves a standing ovation. Her recital rocked the house. She’s the best friend I could ask for.
“When I saw what those girls wrote, I wanted to show you what East High really thinks of you.” Troy explained, placing a hand on top of yours. “Sharpay even wrote one.” You both laughed when you read it. She’s one of the few people I can bare sharing the stage with. You blew out a breath.
“The thing is, I can handle being called talentless and all of that.” You took the folded piece of paper out of your pocket. “This one just… I don’t know.” Troy gently took it from you , his hand tightening around your as he scanned those four awful words. At first, he didn’t get it. You had changed him in all the best possible ways. You made him want to be himself. You inspired him not to be scared of what everyone thought. So how could someone say you were just a charity case?
“You-” He took a deep breath, still wrapping his head around it. “You don’t actually believe this, do you?” You shrugged.
“I mean… sometimes, I guess.” You tore off a piece of bread and rolled it between your fingers. “When it’s just the two of us, I feel like nothing else matters. But when I see you out there on the court, I can’t help but wonder… why me?”
Troy almost looked hurt. He started gathering little heart shaped pieces of paper from the tree and walked around the table. You stood as he put the notes in your hand, reading aloud as he handed each to you.
“September 17th, 2006. The day that we met. When we got stuck painting sets, you were one of the only people to talk to me about something that wasn’t basketball. You made me feel like a regular guy.
“October 31, 2007. The night I convinced you to come with me to Chad’s Halloween party. I was a pirate and you were Elizabeth Bennet. That was the first time that you really opened up and were able to be yourself around people who weren’t just me and Gabriella.” His eyes locked with yours. “Look at the back of your necklace.”
You flipped the heart charm around and read the date engraved in the silver.
“January 3rd, 2007.” You felt tears building. “My recietal.”
“Being on that stage with you made me see a whole different side of both of us. Our voices fit together like we weren’t meant to sing with anybody else.” He brushed a hair out of your face. “It was the moment that I realised I was in love with you.”
“I love you too, Troy.” You cried, closing the space between the two of you. He was right. It felt like you weren’t meant to kiss anyone else. When you pulled away, you were both grinning. “Do you think we can still perform? It’ll be difficult but I still want to sing.” He just grinned bigger and kissed your forehead.
“Ryan and I already have a plan. You just have to come to rehearsal tomorrow morning.” You nodded and the two of you sat back down to finish dinner.
-
You couldn’t remember the last time you were this nervous. You and Troy were learning and rehearsing with the system all day and the number would hopefully be unforgettable. But there was so much that could go wrong and you were absolutely terrified. You nearly jumped out of your skin when Sharpay appeared behind you.
“You don’t have to worry about Madison. She has enough detention to keep her from anymore plotting. And I had no problem reminding her who was in charge of any and all sabotages.” She smirked, eyes scanning your outfit. “Good choice.” And that was probably the closest thing to approval from Sharpay Evans that you would ever get.
Ryan came to make sure everything was secure and connected, reminding you when you needed to stand and be ready. He assured you everything would be fine.
“Looks like you’re on.” He gave you an encouraging thumbs up. You took a deep breath and used your crutches to walk across the stage. The audience murmured as you sat on the swing that hung from the ceiling. The lights were bright enough that you couldn’t see Troy stage. You gripped the necklace around your neck for courage. There was no backing out now.
“Take my hand. Take a breath. Hold me close and take one step.” As you sang, Troy slowly made his way onto the stage. His smile made your nerves disappear. “Keep your eyes locked on mine and let the music be your guide.” With every word, Troy walked closer to the swing. His eyes asked if you were ready. You gave him a small nod and he swept you up in his arms as you both sang the chorus.
“It’s like catching lightning, the chances of finding someone like you.” The choreography was a stunning mix of lifts and spinning in Troy’s arms, your feet never even touching the floor. “It’s one in a million, the chances of feeling the way we do.”
Troy lifted you up one more time and set you down gently before beginning the next verse.
“Take my hand, I’ll take the lead. And every turn, will be safe with me.” He twirled you slightly and you fell back for him to catch you, kicking your leg out so your skirt flared. “Don’t be afraid, afraid to fall.” His strong arms wrapped around you and he swung you around. “You know I’ll catch you through it all.” He let go as you were pulled up into the air. The audience gasped. You had forgotten they were there. “And you can’t keep us apart.”
“Even a thousand miles can’t keep us apart.” He almost forgot the words as the light practically made your white dress glow against your skin. Your necklace sparkled. As cliche as it sounded, you looked like an angel.
His wires lifted him up to meet you.
“Cause my heart is where you are.” And so the floating waltz began. “It’s like catching lightning, the chances of finding someone like you. It’s on in a million, the chances of feeling the way we do.” You felt like you were dancing on clouds. Troy couldn’t stop beaming.
“And with every step together, we just keep on getting better.”
For the bridge, the wires had you circling each other on opposite sides of the stage, slowly getting closer.
“Oh, no mountain’s too high and no ocean’s too wide. Cause together or not, our dance won’t stop. Let it rain, let it pour, what we have is worth fighting for.” You finally came back together. “You know I believe that we were meant to be.” With Troy holding you, you leaned back into another tumbling spin in the air.
The final chorus slowly brought you down to the floor, you sitting back down on the swing.
“So can I have this dance?” Troy stood in front of you, bowing to kiss your hand as if he was really asking.
“Can I have this dance?”

Christmas Break - Part 1
Surprise!! After a looong time away Court returns to Everlark fic world with a little holiday treat for everyone  - enjoy! :)
Hi everyone. So 2020 has sucked. For me, the beginning of quarantine was actually a bit of a gift. Being home gave me the gift of time, something I haven’t had much of as my daughters (who were very little when I started writing in this fandom) have gotten older. While I never stopped writing, it was a struggle to find long enough chunks of time to get into a flow. I started writing again with earnest. Not all of it was my fanfiction; some of it was my original work. El keeps me posted on the humbling and kind asks she gets about my writing. I felt bad that despite my increased writing, I still wasn’t ready to update any WIPs. But I did remember a story I had started for the final holiday PiP that I was never able to get past the first page (due to lack of time that year) and to my surprise, it started flowing. I had every intention of finishing it and having El post it as a gift to this fandom. But once my school went “back” in October and hybrid learning started, that was it. My time was gone. And further, my family experienced the very sudden and non-Covid-related death of my aunt. So while I have nearly half of this story written, it’s not done. But it will be, very soon, since it is a one-shot. As with all my stories, it took on a life of its own and it needs more love. So what I have for the readers who have loyally followed me is the first part, the part that involves Christmas. It’s my hope to have a second part posted in a week or two, so that by the time that part posts, a final part is nearly done.
Thank you for your asks and your patience, and thank you to El, one of my favorite people in this world and the best thing my time in this fandom has given me. Thank you for your encouragement. Our friendship means the world to me.
Here’s to a better 2021. Love to you all. Court
Christmas Break
Fuck, not again, Peeta grouses as the opening notes of that insidious Mariah Carey song pipe through the loudspeaker. That’s the third time in the last two hours. He’s all for holiday spirit, but if he never hears this fucking song again it will be too soon.
Leaning his forehead against the cold pane of glass, he peers out of the fourth-story window into the darkened sky. When he had arrived at work a few hours ago, the snow had just been starting to fall; a slow, lazy tumble of flakes. Now it’s coming down in a tumultuous swirl. It figures Panem would finally see a white Christmas his first Christmas Eve on rotation in the emergency room. No doubt the weather is partially to blame for the crush of bodies crowding the waiting room tonight.
Peeta walks away from the window and opens the cabinet where he stashes his Clif bars. The economy-sized box looks suspiciously closer to empty than it did the other day. He’s heard complaints from other doctors and nurses that snacks are pilfered on a regular basis and was warned to label his own boxes. But he had forgone the warnings. If someone needed an energy bar badly enough to steal one, what was the $20 he had spent on them at Costco. He snags one and unwraps it.
He’s just raised it to his mouth when his Apple watch pings and his silenced cell phone pulses insistently against his thigh. Heaving a loud sigh, he sets down the energy bar and withdraws the phone from his pocket.
“Mom, you’ve got exactly 60 seconds,” he grits out. He doesn’t even need to look at the screen to confirm it’s her. She’s called twice already tonight, calls he’s ignored with good reason, but somehow his mother thinks a phone call from her trumps any actual emergencies her doctor son could be dealing with. Which, tonight, have been nonstop since his shift began at six.
“Please tell me you ate something,” she begins.
“I was just about to, when you called,” he replies. “I’ve only got a couple of minutes. It’s been utter chaos for the last four hours.”
“We missed you at dinner. I can’t remember the last Christmas Eve when I didn’t have all three of my boys together.” Peeta closes his eyes. All these years my mother has been gushing about having a doctor in the family, and yet she never stopped to consider the ramifications of actually having a doctor in the family, he thinks. Particularly its impact on holiday gatherings. She obviously hadn’t learned anything from this past Thanksgiving, as now, just a month later, she’s already dumping a fresh guilt trip on him for missing another family dinner.
She continues, “And Jackson and Maxwell were just devastated when they heard you weren’t coming, until I assured them they’d see you tomorrow. We will see you tomorrow, yes?”
Peeta suppresses another exasperated sigh and breaks off a chunk of the Clif bar. “Yes, Mom, I’ll be there.” And though it’s childish, he crams the bar into his mouth and mumbles around it, “I wouldn’t miss it for anything.” His chewing masks the sarcasm that weighs down the words.
“Excellent. We need an updated family portrait before Everly and Rye have to leave for her parents’ house.” Placated, his mother moves to ends the call, but not before getting in a less-than-subtle comment about how much she adores his brother Rye’s fiancée and how happy she is Rye is settling down.
Staring at the disconnected call flashing on the screen, Peeta tries not to let the remark get to him. Mostly because he knows it’s a lie. His mother has complained more than once about Everly and how she’s not good enough for Rye. Peeta knows the dig was directed at him. He hasn’t truly had a serious girlfriend since junior year of college; just a few casual relationships that barely qualified as relationships. He doesn’t know how his mother expects him to meet someone with the hours he keeps. And his father, for as close as they are, never seems willing to jump to Peeta’s defense.
Taking a deep breath to let his irritation suffuse, he jams his phone back in his pocket and scarfs down the rest of his pathetic dinner. All three bites of it. Then he uses the restroom, dutifully washes his hand, and stalks out of the staff lounge, his short break over.
As he strides up the corridor, he hears loud shouting coming from the ER waiting room.
“…should be asleep in her bed, waiting for Santa Claus to come, but instead, we’re still here waiting for someone to take a look at her arm! It’s been over two hours! Don’t you people have any compassion? Or is Ebenezer Freaking Scrooge running this place tonight?”
Curious, Peeta veers towards the reception desk, where his eyes land on the ranting woman. She’s young, probably no older than her mid-twenties, and in spite of the fact that her dark hair is spilling out of a messy braid and she’s not wearing any makeup, Peeta is immediately struck by her beauty. The rosy flush to her cheeks from her tirade actually makes her even prettier. She’s cradling a toddler and protectively shielding the little girl’s right arm. The toddler’s blonde head rests on her mother’s shoulder, her thumb wedged into her tiny pink mouth. Her left arm clutches a stuffed orange cat. She looks tired. Actually, both mother and daughter do.
“Miss, I understand your frustration, I really do,” the receptionist says calmly, her eyes cutting to Peeta as he stops by her side. He reads the name on the file on top of the stack, the next patient scheduled to be seen: MCMURPHY, JOSEPH. Clearly not the little girl in front of him.
“I don’t think you do!” the young mother cries, her eyes flashing steel. “She’s three, she’s in pain, and she’s scared. And what’s more, I’ve seen at least five people go ahead of us who came in after us!”
“That’s not how the emergency room works, miss,” the receptionist replies. She drums her fingertips on the desk, offering the young mother a tight smile.
“It’s Christmas Eve,” the young mother adds, an edge of desperation creeping into her tone. Discreetly, Peeta moves around the receptionist’s chair, scanning the desktop until he spies the stack of files for the patients awaiting admission. While the receptionist continues to give the young mother the run-around, he thumbs through the stack, searching. His eyes land on what he’s looking for: a date of birth. His lips tip up. Bingo. This has to be it: HAWTHORNE, IVY ANN.
At the exact second his hand snatches Ivy’s file from the pile and slips the other one in amongst the stack, the young mother’s eyes lock on his. Her gaze narrows. He can see the exhaustion all over her beautiful face. Her full lips twitch, her countenance suspicious as they stare at one another.
“Ivy Hawthorne?” Peeta taps the file he had extricated. An immediate flicker of relief lights the young mother’s mercury eyes, and that lush mouth breaks into a grateful, relieved smile. The receptionist’s neck snaps up. “I’ve got this,” he adds, his tone leaving no room for her to argue with him. It’s not protocol for Peeta to take a patient directly, but it’s also not blatantly against the rules. Sure, it might mean a little more work for him, but if it means he can get this little girl home sooner on Christmas Eve, it’s worth it.
He smiles at the little girl. “Ivy, I’m Doctor Mellark. I’m going to help make you feel better, okay?” She nods once but doesn’t lift her head from her mother’s shoulder. Peeta’s arm sweeps to the side, ushering the young mother and Ivy past the desk. He scans the hallway and spies a partially drawn curtain halfway up the corridor. He leads them to the available partition and close the curtain behind them. As he turns to face them, he nearly slams into the woman. She hasn’t moved, and her luminous grey eyes fasten to his. She looks as if she’s going to say something, but several seconds pass and she’s still quiet, still watching him. The silence starts to become uncomfortable. Peeta clears his throat.
“If you’d have a seat, please, Mrs. Hawthorne. You can hold her while I get some more information from you.”
The young woman’s lips part slightly, again appearing as if she wants to say something, but instead she shuffles forward and Peeta waits while she settles on the edge of the hospital bed, gingerly adjusting Ivy so she’s sitting sideways across her mother’s lap.
Peeta sinks down onto the stool and scoots towards the edge of the bed. This close he has a much better look at Ivy’s mother. She really is a beautiful young woman, and given how adorable Ivy is Peeta assumes her husband is probably also very attractive. He feels a twinge of jealousy. Lucky bastard. Pretty wife, cute kid…probably has a nice little house and a golden retriever too. Living the dream. His dream, if he allows himself to admit it to anyone but his mother. If he was being perfectly honest, he had always envisioned himself married by now.
“How old are you, Ivy?” he ask, even though he knows from her chart and her mother’s declaration that she’s three years old. She hesitates, and still clutching the stuffed cat, manages to display three fingers. Peeta smiles at her again.
“I have a nephew who is the exact same age as you are. He told me just last week that he’s a big boy now. Are you a big girl, Ivy?” He keeps his tone gentle, hoping it will put her at ease with him. She nods, her big blue eyes lightening imperceptibly. “I thought so. Can you be a big girl and tell me what happened to your arm?”
Her mother answers automatically, “She fell. I was only gone—” Peeta holds up his palm. He has the triage nurse’s initial assessment, so he knows Ivy’s arm is likely broken. What he doesn’t know is how the arm got broken. And those details he needs to try to get from Ivy herself. Kids her age always tell the truth when it comes to how they were injured, and unfortunately it’s part of Peeta’s job to make sure there isn’t a more sinister reason she’s in the E.R. tonight, no matter how sweet and innocent her mother appears. He’s already had a few encounters with suspected child abuse, though his gut tells him that isn’t the case with Ivy Hawthorne.
“Please. I would like Ivy to tell me how it happened.”
Something dangerous flints in Ivy’s mother’s now stormy grey eyes.
“She. Fell.” The words are curt, enunciated coolly, but her voice is soft and Peeta can tell she’s keeping her temper in check for the benefit of her daughter. Eyes still pinned to his, she inhales deeply. A second later, her shoulders relax. “Go ahead and tell the nice doctor how you hurt your arm,” she whispers, stroking Ivy’s curls.
“I was trying to see Santa,” Ivy replies, her tongue tripping in a lisp on the “S’s.”
“What do you mean by that?” he prompts her.
Ivy scrunches up her button nose. “I was trying to see up the chimney. ‘Cause the chimney at Aunt Katniss’s house is so skinny and Santa Claus is real fat and I don’t know how he’s gonna fit down it to bring me my presents!” Her blue eyes brim with tears and her lower lip starts to tremble. Peeta reaches over and pats her knee.
“I wouldn’t worry about that, sweetheart. Santa Claus is magic. He’ll get you your presents, no matter what the chimney looks like.” He exchanges a look with her mother.
“It was all my fault,” she says quietly. “I went in the kitchen, to get the cookies and milk—”
“And the carrots! For Rudolph and the other reindeer!” Ivy chimes in, her eyes shiny wet.
“I never should have left her alone, not even for a second. This is my fault. It’s my fault. She wouldn’t have slipped and fallen off the hearth if I had been watching her.” Guilt chokes her words, and it sounds as if she’s close to tears.
“Accidents happen, Mrs. Hawthorne,” Peeta says empathetically, “that’s why there are emergency rooms.” She presses her lips together, her brows knitting.
“It’s Everdeen,” she says quietly. Peeta drops his eyes to Ivy’s chart, and furrows his brows, his gaze wandering to the young woman’s left hand. No ring. A brief thrill curls through him at the thought that she’s single. Asshole, he immediately chides himself. So not what you should be thinking about right now. He scans the chart more carefully and shakes his head.
“I’m sorry,” he begins, “but this lists Primrose Hawthorne as the mother, under the Parent/Guardian information, and a Rory Hawthorne as the father. I just assumed—”
She cuts him off. “Primrose Hawthorne was her mother. But I’m not Primrose Hawthorne. I’m Katniss. Katniss Everdeen. I’m her aunt. I should be listed as her primary emergency contact.” She swallows and squeezes her eyes shut briefly. When she opens them, they plead with his. Peeta glances down at Ivy, and then raises his eyes to Katniss again. The guilt that was clouding those silver irises a moment ago has dissipated, replaced with anguish. He doesn’t know what the full story is here, but he didn’t miss Katniss’s usage of the past tense in referring to Ivy’s mother. So he honors her silent appeal not to ask questions.
“Okay, Ivy, you fell, and you landed on your arm? I bet that hurt,” Peeta says to the little girl, but his gaze stays fastens on Katniss. She gives him the faintest smile and mouths, “Thank you.”
~*~*~*~
An hour later, the orthopedist informs Peeta that Ivy Hawthorne is ready for his approval to be discharged. Not wanting to keep her and her aunt waiting any later than necessary, he sets down the X-ray he had been studying, and heads back to where Ivy is.
Standing outside the curtain, he hears quiet singing. He draws back the curtain and sees Katniss seated on the bed, with Ivy nestled in her lap. A bright pink cast safely cocoons the girl’s arm. Her blonde head rests on Katniss’s shoulder. Her eyes are closed, and her little body rises and falls with the deep breathing of sleep.
Katniss continues to sing, unaware of Peeta’s presence. He doesn’t recognize the tune she’s singing. It’s not a Christmas carol, at least not one he’s ever heard before, but he continues to listen, captivated by her voice. It’s soft and decidedly feminine, but there’s raspy undercurrent to it that gives him chills. It’s like the first sip of a rich, smoky bourbon.
Gingerly, he tiptoes towards the bed and stands before her for several more minutes, until Katniss finally lifts her eyes. She immediately stops singing. Peeta smiles and nods towards Ivy.
“Someone is worn out,” he whispers. Katniss’s lips twitch into a chagrinned smile.
“I’m sure the second we get home she’ll be wide awake and it’ll take forever to get her into bed. She was already amped up about Santa Claus before this.” She tips her head and gestures with her chin towards Ivy’s arm.
“Warm milk. With a little bit of cinnamon,” he suggests.
“Really?” Her eyes round. “Cinnamon? That really works?” Disbelief clouds her words. He shrugs sheepishly.
“I have no idea. No kids. And I’ve never had much trouble sleeping. I’m usually asleep the minute my head hits the pillow. But I’ve heard from a friend with a toddler that it does the trick.” He waits for her to say something—anything—in response, but she doesn’t. Her gaze is back on the sleeping toddler in her arms.
Watching her stare tenderly at her niece causes something unexpected to claw at Peeta’s chest and he’s overwhelmed by a fierce compulsion to want to keep her here, to get to know more about her. It’s been a long time since he felt this kind of instant attraction to a woman. Why couldn’t he have met her under different circumstances?
“Are we all done, doctor?”
Peeta startles from his thoughts and offers Katniss an apologetic smile.
“Yes, sorry. You are good to go as soon as you sign here—” He holds the clipboard at an angle, to allow her to sign without having to disturb Ivy, “and here.” He flips the sheet back to the second page and she scrawls her name across the line there, too. Normally a nurse would go over discharge papers and protocol with patients, but Peeta had taken it upon himself to grab Ivy’s. He needed to spend every possible minute in Katniss’s presence.
Once the release forms are complete, he review the plan for Ivy’s follow-up care, including how to manage any pain she has and when she’ll need to return to have the cast removed. Katniss listens attentively.
When he’s finished, she stands up slowly, her movements tentative so as not to jostle Ivy. A sigh parts the little girl’s lips and she stirs, but she remains asleep. God, she’s cute, Peeta thinks.
“Thank you, Dr. Mellark,” Katniss says softly. “For everything. I know what you did…” She falters. “I mean, I know we, ah, weren’t next, and ah…” Peeta waves a hand dismissively, sensing her discomfort with his hijacking of the queued patients.
“It was my pleasure,” he replies. “Little girls should be home on Christmas Eve. Waiting for Santa.” He echoes Katniss’s earlier words. “I hope he’s good to her.”
He doesn’t miss the forlorn expression that flits across Katniss’s face as she glances down at her sleeping niece.
“He can’t bring her what she wants most, but he’ll try,” she murmurs and moves towards the open curtain. Just before she steps out into the hall, she pauses and turns to face Peeta.
“Merry Christmas,” she adds.
“Merry Christmas,” he concurs. With a faint smile, she steps around the curtain. It rustles in her wake and resettles. Peeta exhales and slumps against the wall, regret washing through him, followed by a stronger wave of sadness at seeing Katniss go. If it hadn’t been for Ivy, he might have concocted some kind of delay to keep Katniss here longer, found some excuse to pry more information out of her. Like if she’s single. A surge of adrenaline spikes in his blood. He can’t let her go this easily.
He bolts out into the corridor, scanning the bustling hallway for any sign of Katniss and Ivy, but they’ve vanished. Disappointed, his shoulders slump as he trudges towards the nurses’ station to hand off Ivy’s file.
It’s probably best, a nagging little voice inside him taunts, and he reluctantly concedes that it probably is. As much as he’d love to finally shut his mother up and find a woman that he’d want to spend more than a night with, it’s not fair to subject one to the kind of schedule he has to keep. New doctors are low-man-on-the-totem-pole. He’s had mostly graveyard shifts and he’s often on call. It’s his dream to have a pediatric practice, but he’s well aware that he’ll have to toil for a couple of years to get on track to make that dream a reality.
A few minutes later, en route to his next examination, Peeta spies Johanna, one of the triage nurses, coming out of the room Ivy had occupied. His eyes immediately narrow when his gaze lands on her left arm.
“Was that in there?” He motions towards the vacated room and then nods towards the stuffed cat Johanna has wedged under her armpit.
“What, the cat? Yeah. It must have fallen under the bed. I’ll take it to the station, in case someone comes back to claim it.”
Ivy’s cherubic little face flashes in Peeta’s mind. He remember how fiercely she had been clutching that cat, and how she had reluctantly agreed to put it down when it had been time for Delly, another one of the triage nurses, to take her for X-rays.
Peeta’s pulse quickens and he immediately thrusts his hand towards Johanna. “I’ll take it,” he says impulsively. She wrinkles her nose and cocks her head, her hazel eyes intensely scrutinizing him. Though they have a casual friendship, Johanna is far too insightful for her own good. Peeta doesn’t really need her questioning his motives for taking possession of the toy.
“The little girl it belongs to goes to preschool with Max. I’ll make sure he takes it to her after the holiday break.” Fuck, that lie flew off his tongue so easily he almost believes it himself. Johanna shrugs and tosses Peeta the cat.
“Suit yourself. One less thing to overflow the Lost and Found.” She strides past him and disappears into Triage 6. He stares down at the stuffed animal. His heart skips another beat and a slow smile tugs at his mouth.
~*~*~*~
Stifling another yawn, Peeta squints at the numbers above the garage. He’s definitely in the right place. He kills the engine and sits for a moment, glancing at the clock on the navigation system. It’s quarter after nine. Early, but not obscenely so. When his shift had ended at six am, he had driven home and fought the urge to crawl into bed; instead, he grabbed a quick shower and freshened up. True, part of him hadn’t wanted to see Katniss Everdeen again looking like the bedraggled, exhausted mess he was at the end of a rotation, and also true, he was going to have to clean up before he’s due at his parents’ house at one. But he also knew he couldn’t really have shown up at Katniss’s house at the crack of dawn on Christmas morning, even if he suspects Ivy likely had her up by then. He recalls, with a wistful smile, that Christmas morning was the one morning he and his brothers were always awake before his father. It was only a question of which Mellark brother was going to be the first to rouse the others. Him being the youngest, it was usually him, he admits with a wider grin.
He quietly exits his car, careful not to slam the door, and gingerly steps across the icy driveway. He pauses at the un-shoveled front walk, where a pristine blanket of snow blocks his path. “Shit,” he whispers, gritting his teeth as he takes the first step. His foot plunges into the deep drift, up to nearly his calf. He braces himself and takes a huge step, hoping to eat up the distance in a few long strides. Fortunately, it’s not a long front walk. He reaches the also un-shoveled front steps and carefully ascends them. He contemplates ringing the doorbell, but instead raps his knuckles against the door. His breath pipes out in white plumes and he rubs his palms together for warmth as he waits.
No one comes to the door, at least not immediately. Peeta lifts his fist again, but just before his knuckles can connect with the wood again, the front door opens a crack and he’s suddenly looking at Katniss. Those silver eyes round almost comically as recognition lights them.
“D-Doctor Mellark? Wh-what are you….”
“Hi. Merry Christmas,” he begins. “I thought Ivy would be missing this.” He smiles and holds up the stuffed cat.
Katniss stares at him, her lips parting faintly, and shock and confusion war on her pretty face. But then her grey eyes darken with what Peeta can only describe as restrained fury.
She opens the door fully and glares at him.
“You had Ivy’s cat?” she accuses.
“Uh…yeah…” he stammers, his own confusion welling. Why is she so angry? “My nephew…he has a bear. Otis. Can’t sleep without that thing. I thought if Ivy is anything like Max…well, she’d be missing this.” He holds the cat out to Katniss. She snatches it so violently that she stumbles backwards. Peeta is equally jarred, but his jolt is from the very brief brush of Katniss’s fingers against his when she had grabbed the toy.
But Katniss gives him no time to revel in the feeling.
“So this is why no one at the hospital had a goddamned clue what I was talking about when I called there looking for this cat an hour ago!” she spits.
Shit, Peeta thinks, an uneasy feeling clawing its way into his gut.
“Why the fuck—” He can’t help but notice her slight hesitation before she lobs the obscenity at him. “—would you take my niece’s cat? Is this something normal people do?” She’s shivering visibly as she rants, a clear consequence of stepping onto her front porch wearing nothing but green plaid pajama pants and a threadbare black Henley shirt.
“I….I…” He shakes his head. He’s not even sure how to defend his actions. He can’t very well tell her his ulterior motives in bringing the stuffed cat back to her niece. Not now. He definitely fucked this up.
“I was just trying to be nice. That I’d save you a trip on Christmas morning,” he finishes lamely.
Katniss’s nostrils flare and her jaw flexes. “Christmas morning,” she mutters, just barely audible over the clattering of her teeth. “Did it occur to you, Dr. Mellark, that I might be looking for Ivy’s cat and I might call the hospital looking for this cat?” She shakes the toy in his face. “And did it occur to you that, in spite of all the toys she had just opened, Ivy might be bawling and throwing a fit because Buttercup was missing?”
Buttercup, he has to assume, is the stuffed cat.
She pauses, as if waiting for him to defend himself, but all he can do is swallow against the lump crowding his throat.
So she continues, “They made me think I was crazy—but not until after they left me on hold for 20 minutes while I tried to calm a wailing toddler. And then they said there was no toy matching this description in the Lost and Found. And that’s because you had it!” Her eyes are a maelstrom now, but he notices that an edge of frustration has crept into her furious tone.
“And now Ivy doesn’t have it. So thank you. Thank you very much, Dr. Mellark. Merry Christmas.” And before Peeta can release the breath he’s been holding during her outburst and plead his case, she whirls around, her disheveled braid lancing through the air like a whip, and slams the door behind her. Stunned, Peeta can only stare at the wreath on the door as he processes what just happened.
What. The. Fuck.
Heart pounding, gut churning, Peeta retreats to his car. He takes a few minutes to absorb the shock of his encounter with Katniss, his mind reeling through the accusations she made. He never would have expected her to react like this. So much for any shot with Katniss Everdeen.
He finally gathers his composure and navigates out of her complex. As he drives, his mind continues replaying Katniss’s words over and over, and he finds one thing nags at him.
And now Ivy doesn’t have it.
Those words don’t make much sense to him. He just gave the stuffed animal back to Katniss. She can give it back to Ivy. She’ll have it now. In her wrath, Katniss just wasn’t being rational, he decides.
But her words continue to haunt him off and on for the rest of the day. Along with persistent images of Katniss that further torment him. She is never far from his conscious thoughts. As he sits down next to the fireplace in his parents’ house with a tumbler of scotch to exchange gifts with his brothers and his nephews, he finds himself wondering who Katniss is celebrating with. Ivy, obviously. But does she have other family?
By the time the Mellarks all settle around the table for dinner, he’s conjured up the notion that Katniss may not be married, but she surely has a devoted boyfriend who is showering her with gifts at this very moment. Her mood is infinitely better than what Peeta witnessed earlier. She’s probably dressed nice for him, and he’s sitting around her dining room table with Katniss and Ivy, like a makeshift family.
His mother’s irritation is palpable when she has to command his attention twice to try and draw him into the discussion centered on Rye’s upcoming wedding. Peeta murmurs the apology he knows she expects and feigns his dutiful brotherly interest for Rye’s benefit the remainder of the meal. But a dull ache has taken up residence in the center of his chest and he realizes just how badly he wants what his brothers have.
He just won’t be having it with Katniss Everdeen.

Holidate - Part One
Pairing: Sweet Pea x Reader
Words: 3000ish
Warnings: Overbearing parents, alcohol
Summary: Tired of being alone on holidays, Sweet Pea and Y/N decide to be each other’s plationic plus-ones all year round. What could go wrong?
Notes: I’m super late posting this and I feel awful about it!! I just couldn’t decide how I wanted it to go and ended up rewriting it three times🤦🏻‍♀️
Tumblr media
“No Mom.” Y/N pinches the bridge of her nose, irritation seeping into her words. There’s already a dull ache drumming behind her temples and she hasn’t even made it home yet. “I’m not using this as an excuse because I’m running late.”
“Well I simply can’t just drop everything and come get you, I’ve got to stuff the Turkey and cut the vegetables and-“ She lets her Mother’s voice drowned out into background noise with a frustrated sigh on her end.
She hates Christmas, she thinks. Hates the decorations, the songs, the cheer. Every last bit. Nothing’s been the same since the truth came out about Hal and-
“Is Jug there?” She cuts her own thoughts short, desperate not to think of her Dad and all the things he’s done right now.
“Of course Forsyth is here!” Y/N can almost see Jug flinch at the correction and bites back a laugh. “But him and Betty have already opened a bottle of wine.”
“Can you just ask him for the number of his Dad’s garage please?” Another five minutes of Alice rambling on passes before Jughead’s voice appears on the other end with a joyful ‘Merry Christmas’ and a direct contact to someone who might be able to help.
She thanks him quickly, hanging up before she can even finish saying goodbye, so he doesn’t have a chance to hand the phone back. And as she leans against the car behind her, the same car that had given up on her just as she passed the town sign, she dials the number and hopes she’ll make it home in time for dinner.
Otherwise, she might never hear the end of it.
-
“Again, in English?” Y/N cocks an eyebrow at him, the string of words he’d just said sounding almost foreign in her head.
She doesn’t mean for it to sound as rude as it does, but she can’t help it. She’s tired, exhausted even, not to mention cold. The snow fall had picked up five minutes after she’d called the number Jug had given her and it had taken him, or Sweet Pea as he’d introduced himself, almost 40 minutes to reach her.
But he just laughs it off, smirks before firing it straight back at her. “You aren’t getting anywhere in this car, anytime soon princess.”
“Great!” It’s official. Her mom’s going to kill her and she’ll be blamed for ruining Christmas. She throws her hands up in defeat, kicking a tyre in the process. “Just great!”
“If it makes you feel better, this isn’t how I planned on spending my Christmas Eve either.” He watches her amused, another laugh passing his lips before the sarcastic remark follows, his arms now crossed over his chest and she almost feels guilty.
“I’m sorry for being such an inconvenience.” She throws a false apology at him along with  a fake grin that falls into a frown almost immediately.
“Apology accepted.” She’s scowling at him now, eyes rolling back but he simply ignores it, happy to keep winding her up. “Want me to give you a ride somewhere while I tow this back?”
“Only on one condition.” She points a finger over her shoulder towards his trunk, the radio still on loud. “We find a station that isn’t playing Christmas music.”
“Hey, it’s either Mariah Carey, or you walk Sweetheart.” He shrugs, walking backwards, watching her make the choice.
He can’t help but laugh again when she sighs and runs to the passenger seat, desperate to seek shelter from the snow.
-
10 minutes after Sweet Pea kindly drops her off at her childhood home, Y/N finds herself still on the porch out front, mentally preparing herself for what’s about to come.
She sucks in a breath. Two, three. And with a fake smile so sickly sweet it makes her stomach hurt; she lets herself in.
Polly’s the first to spot her, catches her the minute she walks through the door and pulls her into a hug before she can even drop her bags. She can’t help but sink into the embrace, it’s always nice to see her older sister alone like this, but Y/N doesn’t even get the chance to ask her how she is before the twins descend down the stairs and push past them in a blur.
“Juniper put the presents down- Dagwood no!” She feels Polly gently squeeze her hand in a silent way of saying they’ll catch up later before she’s chasing after them, joining an exhausted looking Jason who pauses long enough to wave a quick hello before he resumes pursuit.
She moves further into the house, away from the chaos of the living room and towards the interesting smells wafting from the kitchen. It’s impossible not to hear her Mother barking orders from where she stands over the stove, while Jug and Betty listen to every word, working on the dining table and it’s fixtures like a well-oiled machine.
“Y/N/N you’re here!” Betty looks up with a soft smile but doesn’t dare move from her task and face the wrath of Alice Cooper.
“Finally!” It’s Alice’s turn to look at her now, a perfectly shaped eyebrow arching in distaste as her eyes roam over her middle daughter. “Please tell me you aren’t wearing that to dinner?”
Y/N lets out a breath she didn’t realise she was holding and prepares to fire back when a gentle arm lands around her shoulder with a calming chuckle.
“Oh come on Mom, Y/N looks fine.” Charles plants a quick kiss to her forehead before ruffling her hair and they both laugh. Her brother had always been her saving grace in situations like this, the only one brave enough to stand up for himself and the others, ever the mediator. But not even he was enough to put Alice off her persistent questioning, she was already sick of her Mother’s judgement and they hadn’t even touched on her job or her relationship status yet.
-
“You’ve definitely told them we aren’t officially together, right?” Sweet Pea takes one last, slow drag of his cigarette before stomping it out under his boot. Josie nods at him reassuringly but one look up at the exterior of her parents house has his stomach in knots. “They know we’re just casual?”
“Sweet Pea would you stop?” She playfully pokes at his ribs, but he just sighs and rubs a nervous hand down his face.
He couldn’t help it, that sick feeling rising from the pit of stomach by the second. The idea of spending Christmas with Josie’s family, a girl he’d only been dating for a month, was absolutely terrifying on all levels. But Fangs had ditched him to spend the holidays with his boyfriend in New York, not that he could really blame him, and he had no other family in town so when she originally offered, he’d jumped at the chance of not spending the day alone.
Part of him had regretted it since.
If Sweet Pea thought the outside of house was impressive, with it’s perfectly placed lights and overly decorated windows, it was nothing compared to what was waiting for him on the inside.
Myles and Sierra McCoy welcome them at the front door with bright smiles and open arms that engulf Sweet Pea before he even has the chance to say hello.
Josie joins in, the four of them becoming one big, massive group hug like he’s been part of their family his whole life and not just a stranger potentially only passing through. All three of them squeal in excitement before someone yanks him in doors.
If he had doubts before, he thinks, he’s almost certain he’s in over his head now.
-
Betty gets engaged on Christmas Morning.
Right in front of the Christmas tree, just after the last presents are opened and the twins are happily distracted by a mountain of toys; Jughead drops to one knee and pops the question under twinkling lights.
The minute Betty gasps the word ‘yes’ the family erupts in cheers, fawning over the couple. Of course Alice is already crying, Polly demands to see the ring, while Charles and Jason pat Jug on the back.
Y/N however stays put, her eyes falling down into her mug of spiked coffee that her mom had scolded her over, eyebrows raised over the rim as she knocks it back.
“Aren’t you going to congratulate your sister?” Alice sends her a pointed look, catching her before she can slope off into the peaceful confines of the kitchen.
“Congrats Betts.” She pulls her into a hug and paints on the biggest smile she can muster as she mumbles into her hair. “I’m so happy for you.”
And she is. Her sisters getting everything she’s dreamed of with Jug, of course she’s happy, but it’s hard to ignore the fact that her younger sister will be married before her.
Even Charles has betrayed her this year and invited a date to Christmas dinner leaving her the last single Cooper. And her mom wasn’t prepared to let her forget it anytime soon.
-
Sweet Pea successfully manages to make it through family movie night, forcefully sat between Josie and her mother, hot cocoa in hand and surrounded from all sides. He even grins and bares the series of photo albums that follow, another embarrassing photo of Josie lurking behind every page turn, but he draws the line when the marriage talk starts, declaring he’s suddenly tired and turns to run up the stairs so fast he’s surprised he doesn’t pull something on the way.
Sienna wakes them up on Christmas morning with a soft knock at 8am sharp, wearing a bright red Christmas jumper and holding two more for the both them.
The mere idea of it makes Sweet Pea’s skin itch as much as the material does once he begrudgingly pulls it over his head.
The rest of the morning is spent sipping coffee, watching the three McCoy’s exchanging gifts. He’s too distracted, wondering if it’s still too late to find a way out of the whole thing to even notice Josie standing in front of him until she’s shoved the present right under his nose.
“Merry Christmas my love.” She places it down on his lap and Sweet Pea finds himself wanting the ground to open up and swallow him whole.
“Jose I… I thought we said we weren’t doing gifts?” All three pairs of eyes are now on him, burning their way into his skin and he’s sure he’s never felt embarrassment like it.
“But that was just a joke, right?” He smiles awkwardly when she laughs, but the sound is humourless, and he can already see the anger bubbling behind her eyes. She doesn’t even give him the chance to reply. “What, so I’m good enough to sleep with but you can’t buy me a gift?”
He chokes, shocked by her transparency around her parents while his cheeks redden by the second.
Ten minutes later he’s out on the drive, bags thrown in the back of his truck, scrambling to get away as fast as he can.
-
Christmas Day ends the way it started.
Miserably sat at the kitchen table, sipping on something alcoholic held in her hand.
Polly and Jason had slipped off not long after dinner, taking two sugar high kids and all their loud noises with them. Betty and Jug now sit on one couch, his arms wrapped around her shoulders, her head resting on her chest, content in their own bubble of love while Alice sits on the other, quizzing Kevin Keller, Charles’ surprise date. She’d feel bad for him if she wasn’t already feeling relieved that her Mother’s attention had turned to someone else for five minutes. Her brother sits besides her, topping up a glass of red.
“He seems nice.” Charles hums in response, biting back a laugh. Was she missing a joke? “What?”
“If I tell you something, you can’t tell the others.” A quick eager nod and she’s shuffling closer so he can whisper his secret. “Kev’s just my Holidate.”
She blinks back in shock. “Holidate?”
“Just a date for the holiday, someone to keep Mom off my back.” He shrugs like it’s nothing, like it’s the simplest solution to the problem. He sips his wine while he waits for her to process it. “There’s no strings attached and I don’t have to spend events alone. I’m even heading down to his parents after New Years to return the favour.”
“Thats...” Y/N breathes out, she’s a little envious she hadn’t thought of it herself. “What an idea.”
-
Y/N sinks into a booth at Pop’s Chocklit Shoppe two days later with a sigh of relief, happy to welcome the peace that comes with being away from her family.
She loves them, her siblings, her mother, the twins, of course but it’s exhausting. The intruding questions, the never ending merry go round of pity and interfering. She knows deep down it’s only because they care, but sometimes she wished they’d just leave her alone.
Pops promptly brings her order of curly fries over, with a soft smile and an extra chocolate shake on the side she didn’t order. It’s been two years since she last stepped into the place, yet he still remembers her favourite like it was yesterday.
“It’s good to see you Y/N.” There’s something in his tone that just feels like home and she finds herself welcoming it, it’s been a long time since anything in Riverdale has felt anything close to that, not since the truth about her dad.
Pops doesn’t stick around, a light pat to her shoulder before he’s a retreating form, leaving her to her thoughts. She barely makes it through a fry before someone’s sliding in opposite her.
Sweet Pea pushes the key across the table, grinning cheekily as he helps himself to the basket in front of him. She barely knows him and he’s already stealing her food. “One fully functional car.”
“Finally!” She snatched them up, hiding them
in her bag and he can see the tension practically melting from her shoulders. “Now I can get out of the hell hole.”
“Christmas went that well? He asks, curiosity peaked.
“You could say that.” She presses herself further into her seat, huffing as she rubs the palm of her hands against her jeans. The anxious look in her eyes tells him that what ever she might say next won’t necessarily make sense and she’s a little embarrassed by it. “My sister got engaged.”
“To FPS son right?” He vaguely recalls his boss proudly telling anyone who would listen that morning. “And that’s a bad thing?”
“She’s my younger sister, and now, as I’m about to be the only official unmarried Cooper daughter my mom has even more of an excuse to interfere in my love life.” The words just slip out and she finds part of her gladly confessing her thoughts to a virtual stranger instead of keeping them in. He smiles in a way that tells her he gets it.
“Yeah well, bet you a chocolate shake mine was worse.” He ignores the glare she sends him when he innocently brings her existing milkshake to his lips and continues when she says nothing. “I spent it with someone I’ve been dating for four weeks and her parents.”
She almost chokes on a curly fry. “You got serious that quick?”
“Of course not, and we both knew it.” She stares at him like he has two heads, he knows she can’t quite fit ‘causal relationship’ and ‘family Christmas’ together so he does it for her. “Didn’t want to spend the day alone so I took her up on the offer. Cue overbearing parents, the cringest matching jumpers and the ultimate gift exchange where I got her nothing because we agreed no presents.”
“Aren’t you old enough to know by now that no gifts definitely means get her a gift?” She laughs when he rolls his eyes.
“Ended with her kicking me out before dinner.” She shakes her head, laughs again as she calls him tragic and a tiny part of him agrees. “And now I’m officially dateless for New Year’s Eve.”
“Thanks for reminding me I have to come back in a few days to attend Riverdale’s Annual Blossom New Years Eve Party alone for the second year running.” She wrinkles her nose in disgusted, unprepared to have her friends on her back as well as her family, and ends up missing the way his eyebrows raise in surprise.
“You know Toni and Cheryl?”
“T’s been my best friend longer than I can remember and Cheryl’s brother is married to my sister, guess you could say I know them pretty well.” She tilts her head to the side, eying him slowly, like she suddenly sees him in a different way. “How’d you know them?”
“Guess you could say I spend more time than I should at the Wyrm.” The mention of Toni’s bar lights up her face. “Plus Toni’s been a really good friend to me since I got here, I was actually meant to be taking Josie to their party.”
“I think I know a way to solve our little problem.” A plan suddenly forms in her head, he doesn’t know whether to be worried or not as he watches the smile on her face widen. “Sweet Pea how would you like to be my Holidate this Friday?”
“Your holi-what?”

✨Huey and Louie Bonding✨
Summary: Huey and Louie have a late night talk about mixed emotions, unasked questions, and Della Duck.
Ao3 Link Word Count: 5439
Louie had never found it easy to go to sleep the night after an adventure. Sure, he liked to nap on the plane after some of their less intense outings, when he felt comfortable enough and everyone was relatively safe. But actually sleeping, at night, in a bed, was practically impossible. Well, for Louie, at least. He seemed to have the most consistent trouble, although they all had their bad days.
Tonight though, he would classify what he was experiencing as more than just ‘trouble’. He hadn’t slept for days, beyond accidental dozing in between hours of emotional turmoil, and even then he’d been regularly woken by nightmares. It wasn’t fun, but nothing had been, recently, and he got the feeling that it would stay that way for a long while.
He tried not to think about it too much.
Three days ago, Louie had almost ripped apart time and space with his own stupid decisions, because the angles he’d been looking for had been skewed by his emotions. Because he’d been looking for an easy way out. Because of his schemes.
(“Your little scheme to bypass the present almost cost us our future.”)
Louie failed to hold back his wince at the memory of the harsh words, his breath hitching as he pulled his hands out from under his blanket to cover his face in frustration. He huffed quietly, restraining himself from the usual groan and/or grumble because as far as he knew, his brothers were fast asleep above him, and the last thing he needed was more accusations and blame.
Even if he deserved it. Even if he kind of wanted physical proof that they were still there, that he hadn’t erased them for good like his nightmares had been trying to convince him he did.
It had scared him badly, what had happened during the Timephoon. The whole thing had been replaying in his head since the moment he’d been sent to his room with nothing to do but worry and think. He’d had to watch his entire family disappear into thin air—
(“I watched your brothers blink out of existence because you wanted a shortcut to riches.”)
—and then he’d been sent to his room immediately after. He’d been terrified, and then he’d been yelled at, and then he’d been alone. It hadn’t exactly made for a happy night of peaceful sleep, Louie could tell you that much.
Huey and Dewey had come back late, when Louie had already been pretending to sleep in an effort to trick his mind into actually doing it, and they hadn’t tried to ‘wake him’. They’d just crawled right into bed and drifted off with considerably less issue than Louie was currently having. Although to be fair, they’d probably been exhausted from whatever had happened to them when they’d been in the past. He would ask, but he was afraid they’d chew him out for it, and if blame hurt coming from Della, then it would definitely hurt coming from his brothers.
Louie had laid stiffly in his own bed that night for about an hour before he’d finally given in and climbed up to check on Huey and Dewey. He hadn’t tried to wake them – actively avoided it, in fact – but he had alternated between sitting on Huey or Dewey’s bed for the rest of the night, staring at them and reassuring himself that they were still there. Maybe it was a slightly creepy thing to do, but he’d done worse things.
Louie wondered if his brothers were mad at him. They hadn’t seemed to be, at first, but then Della had stepped in to ground him, and now he wasn’t so sure. He wasn’t sure about a lot of things.
The day after his big mistake, his whole family had packed up their things and left him home alone with only a robot and a ghost to keep him company after a traumatic event, and they went on his dream vacation without him. Adventures terrified him, usually, with how dangerous they were – and that had been part of the reason he’d been looking for a shortcut to treasure. He’d thought it was perfect, and that no one would have to get hurt, that way. No one was supposed to get hurt. He didn’t mean for—
Anyway. Louie didn’t like most adventures, and everyone knew that. And then on top of the punishment of watching his family blink out of existence and being grounded, he also had to sit in his room, trapped by lasers that stopped him from even going to the kitchen, guarded by a robot that shot electricity at him if he tried to leave. He’d been alone for two days, and then almost every villain that had ever attempted to hurt his family had showed up at the mansion, breaking down the door and banishing Duckworth with ease and making it impossible to call for help.
Would anyone have listened, anyway? Would anyone have even come to save him, or would they have thought it was a trick?
Louie – in the face of utter terror and the very real threat of bodily harm – did the only thing that he really knew how to do.
He found the angles, and he schemed his way out.
And sure, it had stung when he’d walked out of the villain’s plane only to find out that his family had the ability to think – for even a second – that he’d ever betray them. Being the ‘Evil Triplet’ had always been a bit of a running joke between him and his brothers, but he wondered sometimes when everyone started thinking that it was true, or that it at the very least had the potential to be.
He’d saved the day, he guessed, but somehow he didn’t feel all that great about it. Especially not now, exhausted in every possible way and still unable to close his eyes and fall asleep.
Irritated with himself and halfway into yet another emotional breakdown, Louie sat up in his bed, pulling the hood of the hoodie he hadn’t bothered to take off over his head. He stared up at the glowing stars on the bottom of the bunk above him – Dewey had put them there when he wasn’t looking – and attempted to steady his breathing, counting like Huey had taught him to, trying to ground himself in reality rather than obsess over the reality that he’d been grounded.
He eventually gathered the courage to look around the room, and he threw off the blankets as he did so, suddenly feeling horribly stifled and suffocated. He’d been stuck in the room for two days. He wanted to get out.
Already, his lungs were squeezing tighter and his heart was beating faster, and he stood in a barely-controlled panic, shoving his shaking hands into the pocket of his hoodie as he walked swiftly and quietly to the door. The door that was closed, the door that he was suddenly terrified of opening, because what if it didn’t? What if he was still trapped?
A lump rose in this throat as frustrated tears stung his eyes, and he rested his forehead against the wood in front of him as he tried to work up the nerve to do something that should be easy. He felt absolutely ridiculous, and a bit pathetic, but at least no one was around to judge him; he was both bitter and relieved about that.
Louie tugged his hand out of his hoodie and grabbed onto the doorknob in one smooth motion, exhaling heavily when nothing catastrophic happened from that one small action. Achingly slowly and painfully hesitant, he turned the knob and pulled on the door, holding his breath and using the heartbeat in his ears to count the seconds.
The door opened.
His breath left him all in a rush, almost like a sob. The room was silent except for the faint rattling of the doorknob in his trembling hand, and Louie felt shivers racing up his spine, his mind practically screaming at him to get out, to prove to himself that he wasn’t trapped.
The door creaked a bit on its hinges as he pulled it open more and more, and he flinched at the noise, having not expected it. He glanced over his shoulder at the beds behind him that held his (hopefully) sleeping brothers, worried that he’d woken them up. Luckily, no one moved, and Louie turned back to the door, pulling his hood tighter over his head as he escaped through the opening he’d created.
Immediately, a little bit of the tension he’d been carrying around for days melted away, and he stood alone in the middle of the hallway, staring at the wall across from him as he breathed, feeling like part of him was still stuck in that room.
After what could’ve been minutes or hours, Louie closed the door behind him and turned right, making his way to his favorite spot on autopilot. It was a window at the end of a hallway, with a bench beneath it that stretched from one wall to the other. It was soft and wide and perfect for napping, and it was a place that made him feel comfortable and safe. Looking at it now, he wished that he’d brought a blanket, but he’d been too busy panicking to really think about it. His hoodie would have to be enough, this time.
Louie sat down on the bench with his back against the wall, heaving a slightly shaky sigh and turning to look out the window at a full moon that he would never see in the same way again. He wondered how many times in his younger years had he looked at the moon, not knowing that he was looking at his mom.
Who would ever think that, though? Who, as a kid, would even entertain the idea that their absent mother was just chilling in orbit? Not Louie, certainly, although maybe it had crossed Dewey’s mind once or twice. He wouldn’t be surprised.
Speaking of brothers…
Louie suddenly had the creeping feeling that he was no longer alone, and no more than two seconds after that revelation, quiet footsteps could be heard walking towards him. He turned his head slowly, blinking to adjust his eyes to the darkness of the hallway in comparison to the brightness of the moon, and there was Huey, because who else would it be.
Huey had stopped a few feet from the bench, and for a moment they just blinked at each other, like neither of them were quite ready to talk, or prepared for social situations in the middle of the night. Huey was in his pajamas, but oddly enough he was not wearing his night cap. Louie raised an eyebrow at him, painfully aware that he himself probably did not look very put together. Huey mimicked his expression, shifting awkwardly in place, and Louie sighed, gesturing to the empty space on the bench as he turned to look back out the window. He heard Huey walk closer, and he felt the cushion on the bench move as his brother sat down.
They sat in comfortable silence for a few minutes, and Louie finally let his hood slide off his head. Huey yawned, and Louie huffed a quiet laugh.
“Is now a good time to ask what you’re doing here?” Louie asked, glancing at Huey out of the corner of his eye. “Or do you normally wake up this early?”
Huey stretched his legs out on the bench and shrugged.
“I saw you leave,” he said. “And it’s been an… intense few days. I just wanted to check on you.”
Louie wondered if ‘seeing him leave’ including the ridiculous amount of time he’d spent just trying to open the door. Something mildly embarrassed and defensive rose up in his chest.
“Well, you’ve checked on me,” Louie said, steadfastly avoiding his brothers eyes. “You’ve done your brotherly duty, or whatever. Feel free to go back to sleep.”
“I wasn’t sleeping,” Huey replied, and Louie turned to look at him. His brother shot him a slightly sad smile. “It’s one of those days, you know?”
A lump rose unbidden in his throat, effectively blocking anything he might’ve said in response, so he just nodded and turned away. He blamed his emotional vulnerability on exhaustion. He blamed his exhaustion on himself.
“How about you?” Huey picked up the conversation, scooting a little closer to him on the bench. “Are you normally up at this time?”
“Only every now and then.” Louie shrugged a little awkwardly. “More so recently.”
Huey hummed, and they continued looking aimlessly out the window. Louie started looking for the few constellations that he knew, just from Huey talking about them. Dewey actually knew more about that than Louie did, because he’d always had a sort of fascination for space.
“I don’t think that I ever heard the full story of how you ended up on Don Karnage’s ship with Uncle Scrooge’s mortal enemies,” Huey said some time later, deceptively casual. “Did you just— Did they invite you or…?”
Louie huffed a laugh, and Huey shot him a wry grin.
“I didn’t sneak aboard, if that’s what you’re asking,” Louie said, really just putting off telling the full story, not wanting to relive it. “I was welcome. Well, as welcome as I could’ve been around half a dozen criminals who hate us.”
“So they showed up at the mansion?”
Louie blinked in shock at Huey’s determination to get right to the heart of the matter. He hadn’t really been ready to encounter such enthusiastic interest in his life at somewhere around three in the morning.
“I mean…yeah,” Louie said weakly, clearing his throat and continuing to explain. “It’s more like they showed up in the mansion. They banished Duckworth in like five seconds flat, and they completely destroyed Dt87 and blocked the phone line and just—”
Louie closed his beak with an audible click, realizing that he’d been rambling and that he was getting worked up again. He hid his trembling hands in his hoodie pockets.
“And…?” Huey prompted gently.
Louie looked at him with a searching gaze, sighing softly when he found nothing but concern and care in Huey’s eyes. His family made it so hard, sometimes, to be closed off and guarded.
“And they hadn’t expected me to be all alone. And they talked about hurting me as a warmup for taking on you guys, and then I had the most awkward and terrifying plane ride of my life,” Louie said quietly, looking out at the yard outside the window, staring hard at the shadows. “I was worried that one of them would figure me out, or get bored and use me as a punching bag or something.”
“Did they hurt you?” Huey asked immediately, new urgency in his voice as he leaned forward on the bench.
“I’m fine, Hue,” Louie reassured him, something small and warm blooming in his chest. “They weren’t nice, but they didn’t hurt me.”
Huey’s shoulders dropped as he relaxed, but he didn’t attempt to move back to his original position, instead settling in closer to Louie and staying there.
“That was a terrible position that you were in,” Huey said softly, just for the two of them. “And you still managed to save the day.”
“Yeah, well.” Louie shrugged jerkily, hunched in on himself just a bit. “I have a lot to make up for.”
“What do you—” Huey started, and then he cut himself off awkwardly. “Oh.”
Louie raised an eyebrow, torn between being amused and being annoyed.
“What, you forgot about me almost destroying reality?”
“We do a lot of crazy things,” Huey said, a touch defensively. “It was basically just another Tuesday for us, it just fades into the background.”
Louie barked a sad laugh, hugging his knees to his chest and remembering the past few days that he’d spent obsessing over his biggest mistake, and Huey had just straight-up moved on already.
“I wish it would fade into the background,” Louie said, a touch of self-deprecating humor in his tone. “I spent the last few days trapped in a room watching a robot play videos of mom telling me all about what I did wrong.
“And it was wrong,” Louie continued before Huey could respond, barreling onward with feeling. “But it— It wasn’t supposed to be. It was supposed to be safe, and—and no one would get hurt. I just— I—”
Louie sighed. “I dunno, I messed up. That’s all there is to it.”
Somewhere outside, an owl hooted faintly, and wind rustled the leaves of the trees. It was a calm night, uninterrupted by a raging hurricane caused by an eleven-year-old child.
“…Why did you do it?” Huey asked eventually, and Louie cut his eyes over to him, catching the odd expression on his brother’s face, like he’d come to a realization about something and it had left him sad and confused. “I don’t think anyone actually asked you.”
“I’m greedy and selfish,” Louie said dryly. “That’s it.”
“No,” Huey said firmly. “It’s not.”
Louie sighed, tilting his head back until it came to rest with a thud against the wall behind him, leaving him staring at the ceiling. He wracked his brain on how to explain, on how to make Huey understand. He’d nearly given up on anyone understanding him, and this felt like a last chance. It felt important.
“I like treasure,” Louie began, running a hand through his messy hair. “I just—That’s just me. I like money, I like valuable things, and I like that we don’t have to worry about how much money we have anymore.”
Huey nodded slightly, encouraging him to continue.
“Uncle Donald never wanted us to worry about money and stuff, but it— it was hard not to notice,” Louie said, tightening his hold on his knees. “I guess I just— Now I don’t ever want to worry about that again.”
“We don’t have to,” Huey said softly. “Uncle Scrooge—”
“—could’ve lost all his money today,” Louie interrupted. “Nothing in our family is guaranteed.”
Huey winced just a little bit. Louie knew he hated being reminded of the uncertainty of life.
“I just— I still like treasure, just because it’s treasure, but I don’t like the life-threatening danger that usually comes along with it.” Louie glanced out the window at the moon, hanging over them and lighting the hallway in soft light. “I guess I wanted there to be an easy way. I thought I could skip over the part where I’m scared for my life and your life and everyone’s life—”
He cut himself off, huffing in frustration. Huey was silent.
“Of course, I ended up making the ‘danger’ part infinitely worse,” Louie said, a hopeless amusement in his voice, loathing turned inwards. “I sure did a sucky job at seeing the angles.”
Huey was staring down at the bench with his brow furrowed and a faint frown on his face, obviously thinking hard. Louie was suddenly worried he was about to get a lecture, and he didn’t know if he was emotionally stable enough to pretend it didn’t hurt him. Luckily, Huey came up with something completely different.
“You know what I think?” Huey asked, and Louie shook his head a little nervously. “I think that none of us were ready to be Scrooge McDuck’s nephews.”
“Well, it’s not like we even knew we were until like a year ago—”
“No, I mean like—” Huey huffed in frustration, waving his hand aimlessly in the air as he tried to gather his thoughts. “Okay, so, if we made a mistake on the houseboat, the worst thing that could have happened was that the kitchen would catch on fire. If we make a mistake as Scrooge McDuck’s nephews, the whole world is basically in danger.”
Louie snorted, thinking of all the times that things had gone wrong.
“I just— I don’t think we were ready for that,” Huey continued, a little sadly, with a hint of anger at life’s unfairness. “I don’t think that we really knew what living with Uncle Scrooge would mean. We’re still kids, you know? I don’t really think we’re supposed to have the means to destroy reality.”
“Well, I did steal the Time Tub,” Louie pointed out. “It’s not like they left it lying around.”
“Yeah, that one’s on you,” Huey said, smiling a little. “But the fact that it even exists seems like a risk. It’s just— Gyro built a time machine, and you stole it. Uncle Scrooge built the Spear of Selene, and mom took it. I’m kind of seeing a pattern of things that shouldn’t be built being taken.”
Louie couldn’t help but feel hurt being compared to his mom in that way, though deep down he knew it was a fair statement. “Yeah, I—"
“The difference is,” Huey interrupted firmly, making serious eye contact. “Mom was an adult. You’re a kid. It’s not really the same thing.”
“Well, yeah. Mom didn’t put the whole population of earth in danger. That was just me putting my own personal twist on it,” Louie said, dark humor lacing his tone. “At least I didn’t get lost in time for ten years.”
“Don’t even joke about that,” Huey said, his voice quieter than it had been, and Louie just shrugged.
Somewhere farther down the hallway, something creaked, but Louie wasn’t concerned. It being an old house and all, it was always making weird noises.
“Similarities aside, I don’t think that Mom likes me very much,” Louie said, unaware of when exactly he’d decided he wanted to talk about this, feeling almost sick to his stomach. “I don’t think she’ll ever be able to really trust me again.”
“She hasn’t been here long enough to get to know you,” Huey said carefully, stubbornly, like he was sure she’d like him if she only knew him.
“But she’s been here long enough to ground me?” Louie shot back, feeling more than a little bitter, unable to hold it back anymore. “She’s been here long enough to tell me that my place in the family is conditional?”
Huey jolted in surprise, sitting up straighter. “She did what?”
Louie raised a hand, waving off the question, but Huey wasn’t having it.
“What the— When did that happen?” Huey asked him, and Louie sighed and dropped his head into his hands briefly.
“Mom left me videos to watch while you guys went on my dream vacation for two days,” Louie said tiredly, and Huey winced. “It was basically all about how my plans and schemes are nothing but trouble and lead to ‘bad things’ for the family. And a big point was how if I wanted to be a part of the family, then I had to knock it off.”
“That’s not— She hasn’t even seen most of your schemes,” Huey said, sounding lost and frustrated. “It’s unwise to make generalizations without sufficient data.”
“To be fair, she did have to watch as you guys blinked out of existence.”
“So did you,” Huey said. “And no one even asked if you were okay before you got sent to your room.”
“I was fine,” Louie said, but it was hard to spin the truth at three in the morning.
“Liar,” Huey accused, but it was soft and kind, and vaguely amused. Louie ducked his head to hide a smile. “I would’ve checked on you that night, but you were sleeping when we got back.”
“No I wasn’t,” Louie said, grinning sideways at his brother. “It was ‘one of those nights’, unsurprisingly.”
“Have you slept at all recently?” Huey asked, exasperated.
“I’ve napped,” Louie said, his smile dropping off his face. “I almost destroyed reality and then I was trapped in my room. I didn’t really feel like sleeping.”
“It’s behind us, Lou,” Huey said, putting a hand on his knee. “You didn’t mean to do it, and I don’t think it’ll happen again. It’s over.”
“Yeah,” Louie said quietly, staring at where Huey’s hand was resting.
“And did— did you say trapped?”
“A laser grid and a robot that shoots electricity do a pretty good job at keeping me contained, apparently.”
“It didn’t let you leave the room?” Huey asked incredulously. “What did you eat?”
“I had some snacks in a secret stash,” Louie said, not having the heart to tell him that he hadn’t much felt like eating anyway. “Don’t tell Dewey, but I ate the cookie he thought we didn’t know about.”
Huey huffed a reluctant laugh at that, glancing down the hallway and looking conflicted and a little angry.
“I…I don’t think that it was right,” Huey said, like he was forcing himself to say it, like he was worried of immediate repercussions. “Grounding you was fine, but everything else just— It doesn’t make sense.”
Louie shrugged and looked away, blinking against the moisture collecting in his eyes.
“I mean, literally all of us left, and we didn’t need to. There was no point in leaving you alone, much less going on the adventure that everyone knows you really wanted to go on. It’s not like there was a time limit on the stupid treasure or whatever. We could’ve just waited until you could go,” Huey began, gaining speed and passion the longer he talked, looking about two seconds away from getting up to pace. “It just seems kinda mean and pointless. Not to mention the laser grid and electricity? You’re eleven! It could have really hurt you if the robot had gone evil, and let’s face it, Gyro made it. It probably would’ve at some point.”
“But it didn’t,” Louie jumped in, because Huey was on his way to somewhere that would make him panic. “I’m fine. It didn’t hurt me.”
“It definitely hurt your relationship with mom, though,” Huey pointed out, seeming suddenly more tired than he had been, a second ago.
“I do that just fine on my own,” Louie said, leaning forward with a sigh. “I just—I don’t know. It’s like she looks at Dewey and sees all the parts of herself that she’s proud of, and then she looks at me and sees the opposite.”
Huey frowned, mimicking his position with his knees pulled to his chest.
“She looks at me and tells me to step out of my comfort zone,” Huey said, a sad wisp of a smile on his face. “We were playing that game we both like, but she didn’t really understand the way I played it. I just wanted to— to show her what I liked to do. Leveling up was cool and all, but farming is what I find fun.”
Louie smiled fondly at the thought of his brother spending hours tending to his farm in-game. It was the most relaxed he ever got to see Huey. Their mom hadn’t been back for long enough to really know how rare that was.
“I feel like it’s unfair to expect her to know everything about us,” Louie said quietly, pointedly not looking at the moon, “but I wish that— that things were different. That I was easier for her to understand. That I made it easier for her to want to.”
Above all, in that moment, he wished that Uncle Donald was there. Louie missed him. He’d know what to do.
“I think she does want to,” Huey said, like he was willing himself to believe it, “but she’s been on the moon for ten years. She’s not— She hasn’t had to deal with people in a long time. And that’s not our fault; it just…happened. She’s having to adjust to being back on earth and being back around people and to being a mom. I imagine that it’s hard to juggle.”
“Yeah, well, she dropped the ball square on my head,” Louie said wryly. “No one else on the planet has ever had to deal with this whole stupid situation before – with their mom coming back from the moon – so there’s like, no way to know what’s right or wrong or what to do.”
“It’s not really fair on anyone,” Huey agreed morosely, plopping his chin into his hand, looking at him with questioning eyes. “Why didn’t you tell us how you felt about things?”
“You want me to tell Della’s fan club that I’m having a hard time forming a relationship with her?” Louie asked, though not harshly. “Dewey loves her.”
“Not more than he loves you. He’d listen.”
“Maybe.”
“Definitely.” A new voice broke into their quiet conversation, and Louie jumped, yelping as he almost fell clean off the bench. He would’ve hit the ground if Huey hadn’t grabbed his arm, and Louie whipped his head up to make startled eye contact with Dewey, because who else would it be.
“How long have you been standing there?” Louie asked defensively, feeling newly vulnerable at the thought that someone had been eavesdropping while he talked about his feelings.
“Long enough,” Dewey said simply, yawning as he plopped down on the bench between Huey and Louie, leaning back against the window because apparently he wasn’t plagued by thoughts of falling through and plummeting to his death. “I woke up and you were both gone. This is Louie’s favorite spot, so I checked here first.”
“Fair enough,” Huey said tiredly, and Louie groaned.
“You ate my cookie,” Dewey said, playfully accusatory.
“I was hungry.” Louie rolled his eyes. “There are plenty of cookies in the world, I promise.”
Dewey shrugged, but he was smiling; maybe a little sad, but a smile nonetheless.
They sat in silence for a few minutes, staring at the empty hallway and the empty backyard and the not-so-empty moon.
“Nothing is ever simple, is it?” Louie asked absentmindedly, feeling the emptiness inside himself, too.
“With this family? No way,” Dewey said, but he didn’t seem as excited about that as he usually would be.
“I wish it was,” Huey said. “For all of our sakes.”
More silence, and then—
“It’s not like I don’t— I mean, I love Mom,” Louie said, not wanting anyone to get the wrong idea. “I’m glad she’s back, but it doesn’t really feel like she came back for me. Not yet, anyway.”
“It kinda feels like she came back for who she thought we’d be,” Huey said.
Louie glanced at Dewey to see how he was taking all of this, a little worried that he wouldn’t want to hear it. Dewey noticed him looking and sighed, his shoulders dropping.
“I get along with Mom pretty well, and— I don’t know, I think that she’s trying, but she needs more time to get used to things,” Dewey said, and then he shot them a wry grin. “That being said, if she makes you guys feel bad again, I will throw hands.”
Louie chuckled, a great weight lifting off his chest. He was surrounded by his brothers, who understood him, and were thankfully not mad at him. It suddenly felt like not everything was going wrong. He leaned his shoulder into Dewey’s, nudging him gently.
“Thanks, Dew,” Louie said sincerely, and then he looked past him to where Huey was smiling at them fondly. “And thank you for coming after me, and for listening.”
“Anytime,” Huey said, reaching over to squeeze his hand. “Things will get better. I promise.”
“I hope so,” Louie replied, and then he yawned.
“You should really get some sleep,” Huey said, worry in his voice. “Do you want to go back to our room?”
Louie shook his head immediately, feeling trapped just at the mere thought of it.
“Maybe Dewey’s got the right idea, then,” Huey said, half amused and half fond.
Louie looked up at the middle brother in confusion only to find him with his head leaning back against the glass, beak open wide as he snored. Louie chuckled at the sight, grinning at Huey.
“I think he does,” Louie agreed, and Huey smiled back.
He settled down against the bench, getting comfy and feeling warmth growing in his chest as Huey did the same. The moon was halfway behind a cloud, now, but it only made the stars all the more visible.
“Goodnight, Louie,” Huey whispered from his spot, sounding half asleep already.
“Night, Hue.”
Louie fell asleep within minutes, and he woke up to the sun on his back and his brothers at his side. Later that day, he would be chased by a monster and dispel an old curse, but that was later. Right now, he had nothing but time. Louie went back to sleep.

I decided to try my hand at writing a fic after some awesome motivation from people on here. It's not an amazing piece by any means, but it was fun to write. @lilacmermaid25's wonderful prompt ideas always getting my mind thinking, so here's a little something I came up with for for the prompt: Elizabeth says goodbye to one of the kids on her way out the door, stopping in her tracks when she realizes they’re in tears. From that moment on, neither work nor school matter - she’s going to stay and hold them in her arms until they feel less empty.
Stevie was sitting at the kitchen table trying her hardest not to cry, but tears kept slipping out. It was Thursday, and she had had what seemed like the longest, hardest week in a while. She loved her internship with Russell Jackson, but he had been in a more irritable mood lately, some of which had been taken out on her. On top of that, she was struggling with feelings of failure and inadequacy, retriggered by the end of her engagement to Jareth, and she had just been feeling empty. She enjoyed her work enough to get out of bed each day, but she found that it wasn’t bringing her the pleasure it used to. Nothing was. And it was exhausting.
This morning, she really didn’t want to do anything besides curl up and cry, though her perfectionist nature was telling her that was not an option. Plus, she was supposed to be at the White House in an hour. Nonetheless, she found herself at the kitchen table, staring at her mug of coffee, unable to keep the tears from falling.
__________________________
Elizabeth was running slightly behind, which is why she barely glanced at the kitchen table when she came down the stairs. She made a beeline for the coffee pot and poured some coffee in a travel mug, her mind already out the door to the pile of briefing books on her desk. As she turned to grab a muffin off the counter, she saw Stevie out the corner of her eye.
“Morning Stevie. Sorry to rush off, but I’ve got to get into the office. Have a great day with Russell honey,” she said, turning to walk out of the kitchen. When Stevie didn’t respond, an unusual occurrence, Elizabeth turned around to see what was going on. She froze when she saw the tears rolling down Stevie’s cheeks.
“Oh, sweetie,” she murmured, all thoughts of getting into the office forgotten. “What’s wrong?”
__________________________
Stevie looked up from her mug when her mom asked what was wrong. She was walking towards her with a concerned look on her face, which was not what Stevie was expecting. Her mom needed to get to work.
“Just a rough morning,” Stevie shrugged. “Don’t worry about it. You have more important things to deal with at work. I’m fine.” She really didn’t want to concern her mom with what she saw as her own shortcomings. She knew her mom was busy, and she didn’t want to be a burden.
“Oh sweetie, no, that’s not how this works,” Elizabeth said, placing one hand on her shoulder and combing the other through her hair. “Nothing is more important to me than you, your siblings, and your father. If you’re hurting, I want to do whatever I can to make it better. Do you want to talk?”
Stevie regarded her mom cautiously. A part of her did want to talk to her about how she was feeling, but another part of her was afraid to admit exactly how bad she felt. “Are you sure you don’t need to rush off to work? You seemed to be in a hurry earlier,” she questioned cautiously.
“I’m positive. Let’s go sit on the couch and talk. I just need to make a couple phone calls and then I’m all yours.”
__________________________
While Stevie got up from the table, Elizabeth stepped into the foyer to call Nadine and Russell. She let both of them know what was going on and that she and Stevie, respectively, would make it to their jobs a little bit later today. Both Nadine and Russell were understanding and sympathetic, just like she knew they would be. As important as their jobs were, they both understood the importance of making sure someone was okay mentally.
Elizabeth entered the living room to find Stevie curled into herself in the corner of the couch. “Alright baby, neither of us has to rush off anywhere now. Both Nadine and Russell know where we are and know not to expect us for a bit,” she said, taking a seat next to Stevie and rubbing her back. It pained her to see Stevie looking so small and lost. “What’s wrong sweetheart?”
__________________________
When her mom asked her what was wrong with such a caring tone, it was like something broke in Stevie, and she lost any control she had left over her tears. She was beyond grateful that her mom wasn't fighting her to get either of them out the door to work and was willing to take some time for whatever this was going to be. Openly crying, she managed to choke out an “I don’t know. I feel so … empty I guess. Messed up.”
“Oh baby,” Elizabeth sighed, continue to rub up and down Stevie’s back.
“I don’t know what’s wrong with me,” Stevie cried, frustrated with the way she was falling apart.
“Nothing’s wrong with you honey. You’re going through a rough time right now. You ended a major relationship, and you’ve been putting in hours at the White House, which is certainly not a stress free environment. It sounds like it’s all taking a toll on you, which is perfectly okay. To be expected even,” Elizabeth said.
“I just feel like such a failure. I couldn’t make my relationship work. I can’t seem to keep Russell happy. I’m being a burden to you while you have the whole country to worry about, but all I want is to be held and, and taken care of,” Stevie said, choking on her tears at the end. She felt so ridiculously guilty for falling apart like she was, but at the same time she craved her mother’s comfort.
__________________________
Elizabeth’s heart broke hearing Stevie refer to herself as a burden. “Come her sweetheart,” she said, opening her arms and pulling Stevie up tight against her.
“You will never, ever be a burden to me. Ever. You got that?” Elizabeth said in a serious tone, placing a kiss on the top of her head. “I will always take care of you when you need it. You don’t ever need to feel bad about wanting that.”
Elizabeth paused for a moment, gathering her thoughts. The more Stevie said, the more she realized exactly how much her eldest was suffering and how much she had been hiding it. She knew there was a lot they needed to talk about, but she didn’t want to overwhelm her or push her too hard while she was so upset.
“It sounds like you’re really struggling right now sweetheart, and I don’t want you to feel guilty about that. It’s okay to fall apart sometimes, and it’s okay to admit you need a little help. I think we’ve got a lot more to talk about, but I also think you need to take a little while to fall apart and simply feel how you are feeling. I’m not going anywhere, just let it all out,” Elizabeth said, pulling Stevie even closer to her. There would be plenty of time to talk after Stevie calmed down. For now, she was going to hold Stevie as long as she needed to for her to feel at least a little better.
__________________________
Stevie cried harder at her mom’s words and the way she was taking care of her. She hadn’t realized how much she needed to hear what her mom said and how badly she needed this chance to fall apart while being taken care of.
Stevie buried her head against her mom’s neck as her mom hugged her tightly and ran a hand through her hair in a soothing manner.
“I’m right here baby,” her mom murmured as Stevie’s tears kept falling. “I’ve got you. I’m not going anywhere.”
“I love you Mom,” Stevie said into her mom’s neck. She knew she still had a lot to talk to her mom about and a lot to work through, but as her mom held her and rocked her muttering words of comfort, she felt just a little less empty.

Motherhood is HARD.
I don’t think a lot of people understand this, I mean what’s so difficult about taking care of a baby when all you have to do is feed them, burp them, and make sure their diaper is clean? All they do is sleep and cry and eat...sounds easy enough. But they don’t just sleep, they cry, and they scream. Our little humans can’t communicate with us like we’re used to, so they cry if something is wrong...or if nothing is wrong. People say that after a while we will know the difference between each little cry but that doesn’t make it any better; the baby is still crying and sometimes nothing can make it stop. They want to be held, but they don’t want to be touched so all the rocking and bouncing and shushing in the world just won’t settle him or her. They’re so tired but won’t go to sleep because they’ve worked themselves up too much and now they have the hiccups. He or she is hungry but they have a belly ache from drinking too fast during the last feed but of course they won’t burp to get rid of the gas bubbles. The baby is over stimulated but still wants to see and hear us, but talking softly or singing quietly is still too much stimulation. We’re doing it wrong. We’re horrible mothers.
I tell myself that I’m a bad mom at least once a day, and I feel guilt almost 24/7. That’s not something that people talk about very much so I wasn’t exactly expecting to feel like crap ALL THE TIME. Mom guilt is real and it sucks. I put my son down because my arms are dead and I need a minute to not have someone touching me, and I cry because how could I feel that way? I take a shower and he’s crying out for me as soon as I have shampoo in my hair, so I rush and probably don’t rinse all the soap out but that doesn’t matter because I shouldn’t have showered while my son was sleeping. I ask my mother in law to watch him for an hour so I can get a tiny bit of sleep, but I lay awake feeling sick to my stomach with guilt for pawning him off and not looking after him. I probably should ask for help more often, my house is a mess and the laundry is piling up, but I should be able to manage it all on my own...I’m just a terrible mother. I was only able to breastfeed for a month before my supply dried up, and I sobbed alone on the couch because, even though I knew that as long as he was eating and was healthy he would be okay, I was failing him. I second guess everything I do, every decision I make for my son is the wrong one...at least that’s how it feels. I tell myself over and over that I’m doing the best I can, but I’m also telling myself over and over that I’m doing it wrong and that I’m a terrible mom.
I don’t regret having my baby. I love him and I’m so happy to be his mother, but I do find motherhood exhausting. I find it lonely and scary. My partner helps, but he doesn’t get it. I’m on duty all day everyday and all night every night, he gets a break from 7am-5pm. He comes home and is tired, he wants to watch tv and relax but Casey is fussy and I’m pacing the house trying to soothe him. And suddenly we’re all cranky which only fuels Casey’s fussiness and turns his little pitiful whimpers into ear piercing shrieks and wails. “Give him his soother” my partner will suggest (usually with an annoyed edge to his voice) and I won’t answer because I’ve been trying to give him his sucky all day with no luck. So I walk around the house with Casey bawling in my arms, his face red from crying, and I try not to be frustrated because it isn’t his fault. I try not to resent my partner as he sits there looking irritated while he rubs his temples. I could ask for a small break, but I’m angry because I shouldn’t have to and I feel guilty for being mad, and the house is a disaster which is obviously my fault and I shouldn’t need a break after doing nothing all day. So I keep walking and rocking my baby until finally, after a whole day of on and off tantrums, Casey falls asleep. I wake up at 5am and do it all over again.

quotidian- alec volturixswandumbasshumanyoungersister
so the reader is 16 (Bella's younger sister) and Alec was turned at 17 but looks older because back in his day everyone was nasty and barely bathed- not to mention stress and the labor-intensive shit kids did back in the 600 A.D
WARNING: Includes a made-up heart blood disease- it's literally bullshit so if ur a med student- go away
her ability is similar to Bellas. She's also human btw and this is taken place after breaking dawn. She's a shield but with Carlisle's help she's able to control herself to be seen or not seen in memories.
So obviously she spent time with Edward- who is not immune to aro's power- so aro can still see everything Edward has ever thought of EXCEPT for the things he experienced/thought of Luna. I know it's confusing so if u got any questions here the fuck I am. So basically Aro doesn't know Luna exists because girlie is trying to hide from him, but girlie is also only human so there's a big chance of her dumb sick-ass slipping and failing.
growing up was hard
having divorced parents was hard for everyone
but being stuck with a delusional neglecting mother, who did love them a lot, but acted like a lovestruck teenager all the time instead of raising her kids was very hard
Luna and Bella Swan stuck together- and are still sticking together- through thick and thin.
the two-year age gap was irrelevant because Luna looked out for her older sister in ways a mother should.
They both knew their mother loved them but it was obvious that she was not content with her life.
And her desired dream life would be just spending the rest of her life traveling with her boyfriend who made a living by playing with a ball and a stick. without being a mom.
Although Renee had never taken out her discontent in life on her daughters and loved them very much, it was clear to Luna that her life would be more satisfactory if she wasn't a mother.
So when Luna was diagnosed with the disease that would take her life away, she had decided that it was best to give her mother what she wanted.
Because the last thing any mom- who despises motherhood- would want was not only to be stuck with two teenage girls but also with one of them being sick.
When Luna was first diagnosed she was thankful that the disease wouldn't cause her to look lethargic all the time.
Yes, she looked sick sometimes when it got really bad, but it was just paleness, purplish heavy dark circles, and colorless cheeks.
That sometimes did the job of helping her older sister forget about the fact that her younger sister- whom she very much loved- was going to be dead even before by the time she turns 18.
Bella Swan loved her sister to death, as much as she loved Edward. But she couldn't help but force the Cullens to tell her sister about the choice of being immortal and living with her for the rest of eternity.
Then they would be sisters forever and ever right?
Wrong
Luna Swan did not want to be immortal.
What the fuck would she even live for?
If her sister were to be alone then sure she would happily oblige turning into an immortal oversized mosquito. But her sister had a family.
So even if she was going to die in the next coming month or even maybe a year tops- her sister would eventually get over her death because Bella Swan had a daughter and a mate.
So while her sister was in Italy, she ran away.
and the fact that she was also a shield, both mentally and physically, meaning that unlike her sister she wouldn't show up in anyone's thoughts unless she wanted to, giving her immunity to Aro and Edward's abilities.
She was human
a very sick human with an even more limited life span
but she was more powerful than her, now, vampire sister, who had forgotten basic sex ed which was now sparking a war.
The only reason she knew of the oversized child spawn of the two most awkward people in existence, was because of Rosalie Cullen.
Rosalie and Luna secretly kept in contact since her disappearance/runaway to NYC.
Edward thankfully didn't know about their activities since Luna was trying her best to keep herself hidden from Rose's thoughts and it was working.
No one knew where she was.
She never really liked the city and preferred to live in a more secluded area but just in case of her ability ever started faltering, because she is after all only a human, she would be around people and no vampire would ever expose themselves to a dying human living in one of the most crowded populated cities on earth.
While everyone was relieved, Bella Swan was irritated.
She missed her sister.
She wanted her sister to live the rest of eternity with her.
But she knew that no matter how hard she tries, her sister would never choose an immortal life.
So when the Volturi was gone.
And hearing from Alice after the clearing, about her younger dying sister being the soulmate AND the blood singer of Alec Volturi, she was determined to go to Italy, alone, and make them aware of Luna Swan's existence.
Renesmee and the Cullens would stay in Forks, but she needed to go to Volterra.
Alec Volturi would never let his soulmate just die.
And a soulmate- no matter who they were- had the ability to give eternal happiness to her sister.
"ABSOLUTELY NOT-"
"Bells are you crazy-"
"She lost her damn mind after giving birth to the next loch ness monster-"
Bella was now confronted by a living room full of vampires in disbelief.
They had just done all this for her and her family, and she was going to go back to Italy?
The Cullens were already walking on very thin ice and one more mistake would result in an entire execution of their whole coven even including Alic and Edward.
But Carlisle and Esma understood.
Luna was also like a daughter to them and they were exhausted from worrying about her well being 24/7 ever since her disappearance
They knew the Volturi did not have a care for individual humans, but they also knew that THE soulmate of THE Alec Volturi would be treated like royalty, human or not.
The only vampire they didn't trust was jane.
If Luna let her guard down she could easily be tortured by the sadistic witch twin who would refuse to acknowledge a human.
Not to mention she wasn't used to sharing her brother.
After all, it was always like this for the past millenias since they were apart. But if there was anyone in the world to make Luna Swan switch to immortality and keep her happy
everyone in the room, whether they wanted to acknowledge it or not, knew that there was only one person who had the capability
and that was Alec Volturi
they quickly came up with a plan
Renesmee would be staying in La Push, while Bella, Edward, Alice, and Jasper would be tracking Luna down.
Carlisle and Esme were on their way to Italy, but they would meet up with the other in France so Demetri wouldn't be able to get to them before they had Luna with them.
It was a risky plan
but Bella had enough
she was not going to let her sister just die
Luna was pissed. She had come back to her apartment after a grocery store run, only to come back and find her living room full of 4 vampires.
4 vampires with a mission to convince her to become immortal.
her annoying ass sister who wouldn't just leave her alone.
Her sister was even more pissed when she found letter exchanges between her and Rosalie.
She wasn't mad at her of course, but it was clear Bella was pissed at Rosalie for not letting her know about the updates she had been getting from her younger sister.
She was Luna's older sister, not Rosalie.
She quickly shook off the feeling of hurt and jealousy as she faced her now very frustrated and furious sister- who she hadn’t seen in months
If y’all like this I’ll continue this series instead
Also doesn’t the girl below vaguely match the description of Bella swan from the books? So if Bella had a sister I feel like she would look something like the gurl below-

Marinette's friends cheered as the young aspiring designer told them her dying feelings. She told herself a numerous amount of times that she was over him, that her feelings were completely gone, but she was wrong.
Her feelings weren't gone, they were hidden. Just like anyone's heart, hers needed time. She spent years chasing after the young model, she spent years loving him, and to say her feelings had banished, was a lie.
With time she'd learn how to love herself, how to put herself before. Needless to say, she was already on the way to a self loving happy life, but it would take time, and she unfortunately wasn't there yet.
Marinette's friends knew this, they understood it would take time, and that their friend probably thought she had already made it, but said nothing. Perhaps they believed that if she said it to herself enough times it'd be real, and eventually they'd believe it too.
Alya wrapped her arm around her best friend's shoulder before smiling down at her. "I'm really proud of you Marinette" she says with an easy smile, her friend returned the smile before shrugging her shoulders.
"It's nothing really" she whispered as she blushed a deep shade of red.
"It is something Marinette!" Alix, on of the designer's friend, yelled. "You were head over heels for him! You loved him, and I know finding out about his relationship hurt you. You are so strong, so don't you dare brush it off and pretend it's nothing, believe me with I say it's everything."
"Thank you guys for always being here" Marinette said and opened her arms wide, her friends ran into Marinette's arms and embraced her. They were so proud.
"I know it hurt but...now I'm just happy for him. He deserves it more than anyone, I'm just glad he's my friend."
"Oh, Marinette" Chloe gasped, "you are too precious" She lightly shook her head.
Marinette grinned and blushed before thanking her. Alya cautiously watched the blonde in front of her. Their relationship was too complicated, Chloe was rude to her friend since day one, and it was only recently that the girls accepted the blonde into the group, upon Marinette's request.
Chloe was a hard person to get along with, and Marinette highly disliked her at one point, but that all changed when Chloe opened up to her as her alter ego. Marinette had been shocked by Chole's confessions and decided to try to become her friend, no matter how hard the blonde refused to.
The girls were confused by their friend's actions, why would their friend, who had been tormented by the blonde for years, try to befriend her?
It was until Chole's friend, Sabrina, turned against her, that she finally let Marinette in. The blonde and the aspiring designer became good friends and later on introduced the blonde to the girls. She apologized for her actions and was forgiven by most.
Alix and Alya didn't forgive her at first but learned how to with time. Although quite some time had passed, Alya still found it hard to trust Chloe, especially with Marinette.
"Adrien's coming!" Rose shrieked as she tapped Marinette's shoulder repeatedly.
"Hey Marinette" Adrien smirked as he lifted his hand the way Marinette once did. "How are you?" He asked ready to see his friend stumble upon her words. The young designer always stuttered and although he once found it weird, he now looked forward to it. It no longer mattered, as long as he got to talk to her.
"Hi Adrien" Marinette smiled and waved, "I'm doing great, how about you?" Her friend's mouth opened agape, this was definitely progress.
Adrien's eyebrows lifted in surprise, although he was surprised and deep down knew it'd be easier to talk to her now, he couldn't help but miss how she stuttered and blushed whenever he looked at her, and how that only happened with him.
"I-I'm good Marinette" Adrien flushed making Marinette's smile deepen.
"That's good! Well I have to get going, bye guys!" She waved and walked towards the entrance where a certain musician was waiting for Marinette and his sister.
"Good job Marinette" Juleka grinned.
...
"Marinette your friend is here!" Sabine, Marinette's mom, yells form downstairs. With a frown, Marinette opens her trap door and steps down the stairs.
On the entrance stands Kagami, looking as perfect as always. The young designer's eyes widen as she looks down at what she's wearing, unlike Kagami who's wearing her every day formal clothes, Marinette is in her pjs.
"Can I talk to you Marinette?" Kagami spoke, her tone was serious and firm, Marinette unknowingly took a step back as her shoulders slumped in fear.  The blunette looked at his friend's girlfriend and noticed how stif her posture was.
"Yes Kagami" Marinette spoke and stood tall, refusing to be intimidated. "Do you want to go to my room or...?"
"Let's head outside" Kagami sweetly smiles as she lightly tilts her head. If it wasn't for the twitch in her eye, Marinette might have thought it was genuine.
Both girls slowly walk out the bakery and Marinette throws her mother a smile. She hesitantly closes the door and looks around, people walk by like nothing is going on and Marinette seems to get even more nervous. She'd hate to cause a scene.
"Listen Marinette I like you" Kagami whispers so low, "but this just can't keep going on"
"What are you talking about Kagami?" Marinette asks with a frown and hugs herself trying to bring some comfort to the situation.
"I've had it with you and Adrien! I'm not okay with your friendship and it has to stop!"
"Hey no!" Marinette yells, she feels the blood that travels through her veins boil as her face starts getting a deep shade of red. "We are friends and I will not stop being friends with Adrien because you feel insecure and uncomfortable! I was here before you and I have given you no reason to feel this way towards me!"
"You like him-" Kagami starts but is cut off my Marinette's hand.
"No!" Marinette's raises her hand and lifts a finger at Kagami, placing it right in front of her face making her stop. "I used to like him, but backed off the moment I found out you were together! I forced myself to let him go and move on with my life knowing it would kill me. I did that because I respect you and Adrien! When I found out I backed off because that's what friends do! They make sure they are happy even if it kills you, I knew I would get hurt and chose to put you before me. I chose to let him go because I didn't want to hurt you. That's what friends do Kagami, you were selfish!"
"Well sometimes you have to be selfish!" Kagami yelled back.
"That's the difference between you and me Kagami, I'm willing to put my friends' happiness before mine and expect nothing in return! And that's not hesitation, that's human! I put you before me, the least you could've done is respect my friendship with Adrien!" Marinette cried out as a tear made her way down her cheek. She was exhausted and extremely frustrated.
"Adrien and I had a fight over you. If you really want him to be happy, I expect you to stop talking to him. Unless you want us to break up, and break him in the process." With that, Kagami walked off disregarding what Marinette had said; along with her feelings.
...
The next day, Marinette walked to school extremely early, she didn't bother greeting anyone as she ran to her classroom and slumped down her seat. She laid her head on the desk and cried. Her hair wasn't in its usual pigtails as it was, instead, let down and all over the place.
The tears kept flowing down her cheeks and didn't bother to stop when she heard the empty classroom begin to fill. Rose and Juleka were immediately by her side asking what was wrong, and getting no answers. Chloe and Alix wanted to give her some space but still kept an eye on her, while Mylene hugged her boyfriend, Ivan, and watched her friend cry with worried eyes.
"Marinette?" The worried voice came from her best friend as she sat besides the aspiring designer. Alya placed a hand on Marinette's hair and hugged her. As soon as Marinette came in touch with Alyas comforting embrace, she lifted her head and hugged her best friend.
Gasps were heard around the classroom, no one had ever seen Marinette this way, she was usually this bubbly person who only found positive things in the world. She helped others around and made sure everyone was happy, no matter the cost.
Everyone watched her with pitiful eyes, Marinette's eyes were swollen and red as the tears just kept coming. Her lips were chapped and maybe even bleeding. Her nose was red from the rubbing, extremely irritated.
Juleka and Rose went to their designated seats when Alya narrowed her eyes. They weren't at fault but her best friend was crying and she was definitely getting protective.
"Marinette?" Someone asked again, this time it was Nino. When Marinette heard his voice a switch went off, she pulled away from Alya and wiped her cheeks before taking a deep breath. She stopped herself from biting her swollen lips knowing if she did so again, they'd bleed.
Marinette knew Adrien would walk in shorty after Nino, and she also knew she had to be strong.
"I'm fine" Marinette whispered, "I'll tell you about it later" she said to Alya and squeezed her eyes shut when her voice cracked.
"Hey guys!" Adrien smiled as he walked through the door. Immediately he frowned upon noticing his friend's state. "Marinette is everything alright?" He asked her.
As much as it hurt, Marinette knew this was it, there would be no more friendship. "Marinette?" Adrien repeated when she didn't answer him. She looked away from him and ignored Alyas shocked gaze. "Marinette did I do something wrong?"
"Can you stop?" Marinette whispered, "I don't want to talk to you...or see you!" She yelled, everyone stayed quiet, everyone knew about her crush on him and were shocked to see her like this.
"What did I do wrong?" Adrien asked again as his eyes started to water. His voice shook, breaking something within her.
"What did you do?" She laughed sarcastically, "I don't know Adrien, maybe breaking my heart! I loved you! And you chose her, and now I'm here supposed to keep a smile on my face and pretend I'm happy when I'm not! I don't want to be your friend, I don't want to talk to you or see you ever again!" Marinette's eyes widened after the words left her mouth.
Had she taken it too far?
Maybe
Would this keep him away?
Certainly
Marinette walked out of the classroom and heard Alya following behind. She didn't want this, and knew he'd get hurt. But she also knew his pain would be temporary, she had been broken-hearted before and didn't want Adrien to go though it because of her.
...
Adrien was hurt, he felt broken. He'd been yelled at by his father, instructor, photographer, girlfriend, but never had he felt this way. When he got in fights with the people he loved he got sad and hurt, but at least he could think. He could manage to think about the situation, this time he couldn't.
Her words kept repeating themselves over and over again, and it made no sense. She was in love with me? He thought, it suddenly clicked, the stuttering and blushing? She liked him!
Why would she act this way though? It had been months since his relationship with Kagami started and she had never complained, she had always smiled and acted supporting. Adrien couldn't think about anything other than Marinette, he felt torn apart and oh so broken.
He leapt through Paris' houses and spotted the sad blunette standing on her balcony. He frowned before taking a deep breath and approaching her. The first thing he noticed was her cheeks, he could see the path her tears had craved upon her reddened skin. Her eyes had lost their spark and had become dull and lifeless. She stared off into the night and kept silently crying.
"Princess?" He asked, Marinette turned her head towards him and smiled.
"Hey kitty" Marinette frowned when her voice cracked.
"Are you okay?" He asked, Marinette nodded before looking up at the dark sky, and bit her lower lip. Her lips started shaking as her eyes filled with even more tears. Her knees gave out and Adrien was quick to catch her.
"I'm so sorry kitty" she sobbed onto his shoulder.
"Talk to me princess what's wrong?" He insisted on finding his answer.
"I hurt him" Marinette whimpered, "I didn't want to hurt him, I-I didn't...I love him!"
"Who princess?"
"Adrien" Marinette whispers, "he's amazing" she lets out a sigh, "he's nice to me and is an amazing friend and I...I hurt him."
"Why?" Her kitty asks.
"Because I'm a burden, I was standing on his way to happiness. If I don't ignore him his girlfriend will break up with him, and he'll have his heart broken"
"How do you know this? How did you know she'll break up with him?"
"Because she told me" Marinette whispers as she cuddles into his chest, "she told me I had to stop talking to him."
Adrien's, or Chat noirs, eyes widened. He couldn't believe Kagami would do this but deep down knew it was true. He suddenly recalled the pain he felt before.
"How do you know you didn't just break his heart?" He asked as he looked at the sky, getting tears in his eyes himself.
"Because he doesn't love me" Marinette whispered, both Chat noir and Marinette stayed silent. Their tears eventually dried as they held each other.
"Marinette! Luka's here...and he has ice cream" Sabine yelled from downstairs. Adrien frowned upon hearing Luka's name but shrugged it off, he helped Marinette stand before saying goodbye and leaving her in the darkness of the cold night.
