We just got back from seeing “Happy Gas” at Tate Britain, the latest exhibit by Sarah Lucas (my favourite “Young British Artist” alongside Tracey Emin). It’s a joyously funny, filthy and thought-provoking meditation on cigarettes, death and sex combining old and recent work. Quick thoughts: I still love Lucas’ giant blown-up pages from tabloids News of the World and The Sun with headlines screaming things like “Sod You Gits.” A striking piece entitled "Inferno" featured a chipped, grubby old toilet illuminated with a glowing red "firelight" bulb inside and a cigar and two walnuts perched on the seat. The gallery walls are papered with gigantic portraits of the strikingly androgynous, shaggy-haired “geezer bird” Lucas herself eating a banana (in the 1990s) and exhaling plumes of cigarette smoke (more recent), demonstrating she’s more charismatic and photogenic than most rock stars. “Happy Gas” is dominated by her series of soft sculpture lewd female figures lolling around and wantonly displaying themselves on chairs (mostly repurposed secondhand office furniture, seemingly). Wearing fetish-y extreme stripper heels, their poses evoke that famous 1963 image of Christine Keeler sitting backwards on a chair. Lucas is a genius at employing flesh-coloured tights and stuffing to evoke rolls of wobbly mottled human flesh (and the ends of the tights are tied into a knot to provide "nipples"). Final shot is Pal and I posing against Lucas’ “tits in space” wallpaper (on sale for £480 a roll in the gift shop!).

Coincidentally, and to my shock haha, the author decided to drop the last four chapters while I was drawing this. Sitting there after reading the lovingly crafted ending and finally re-drawing the first TWSB fanart I ever made felt very poetically well-fitting for the occasion! Thank you to Sookym, and all of the friends and fellow readers that I have followed along with on this journey for the past few years!!

I'm very excited for the side stories and the webtoon that is coming back for season 2 on the 30th (and with a new adaptation team)! I hope to continue drawing art for this beloved series for longer too!! 🙌
