"Was there ever anyone else?"
Shepard almost scoffed, but with the tense air in the hospital room, she kept it in, even though the question was rediculous. Even if she had been in the mood for romance, when would there have been time? Between the constant oversight from Cerberus, the distrust from the alliance, and the reapers that were always one step ahead, she barely had time to feel anything. Then there was the team she had to not only convince of their mission, but also prepare them to die for it. She hardly had the energy to keep her own self together, let alone find some free time for a shag in the loft.
But hadn't that been how it had been with Kaidan? Fighting the Council that never believed her, fighting the turians who still hated humans, fighting everyone else who didn't think she belonged. They'd found each other after every fight, patched each other's wounds, passed ammo around. A few stolen words in the brief minutes between meetings, assuring that the other wasn't a step away from breaking down. Getting a second cup of coffee just to spend a little more time together.
Neither of them took the regulations lightly, but still sought each other out, again and again. Finding time in their schedules when the computer didn't leave them any. A soft hand, a lingering touch. Neither of them wanted a distraction, but a refuge. Sometimes that was all they had: a few words, spoken with honesty. And yet, even in those small moments, it was more than enough; to breathe, to believe, to love.
"No." She said, finally, remembering the question. "No, there was never anyone else."

i've said it before and i'll say it again:
if i had a nickel for every mass effect prologue with its protagonist suffocating to death, i'd have two nickels. which isn't a lot, but it is weird that it happened twice...
happy n7 day, soldiers! keelah se'lai.

Mezzo - 12 - Truth Like Blood
Pairing: mshenko | Rating: M Tags: Canon-typical violence, trauma, dealing with your problems poorly, body autonomy struggles   Summary: The twists and turns of ME2, through the eyes of everyone but Commander Shepard. Chapter Summary: Kaidan faces the truth. Jack hits a nerve. Dr. Chakwas isn’t buying this bullshit. AKA, everyone is stubborn and making it everyone’s problem.
HAPPY N7 DAY!
Chapter 12: Truth Like Blood | Read on Ao3
20 December 2185, Serpent Nebula, Widow, Citadel
Kaidan’s ears ring as he delivers his report to the three people sitting around a small table in Admiral Anderson’s office, though he finds it easier to bear the scrutiny of Admiral Hackett than the hard stare of room’s third occupant.
He can’t look Hannah Shepard in the eye.
She sits so straight she doesn’t touch the back of her chair, clasped hands resting on the table, with a preternatural stillness her son didn’t inherit. But looking at her is like looking in a mirror at what Sam would – would have – looked like in a few decades.
Anderson fixates on his hands, with an expression that belongs at a funeral. Except he’s been to this funeral before. Hackett, however, gives Kaidan his rapt, unwavering attention.
The entire time Kaidan speaks, he sticks to the facts. It’s a report, so he gives it. By the book. By the book is what he’s good at. Someone had to catch it every time Shepard threw it out, and his reflexes are good.
When he finishes, he rubs sweaty palms across his thighs under the table and nearly spills his glass of water when he tries to wet his dry throat.
Silence fills the room. Hackett is the first to break it.
“So it’s your conclusion that the person you encountered on Horizon is not Commander Sam Shepard.”
“No, sir. It isn't him.”
“I don’t understand,” Captain Shepard says with a scowl Kaidan has seen dozens, hundreds of times, on her son’s face. “He knew you. Your service history. Your squad. He was traveling with a former alien Normandy crew member who believed it was him.”
“Garrus Vakarian isn’t biotic,” Kaidan replies, fists clenching under the table. “He can’t feel what I feel.”
“His…biotic field,” she says with a skepticism that sets Kaidan’s teeth on edge.
Hackett leans back in his chair, hand to his chin. “Tell me more.”
Kaidan gladly turns his focus to Hackett. “Every biotic emits a field that other biotics can…sense in close proximity. It’s unique. Like a fingerprint. Put me in a blindfold and I could tell you when Commander Shepard entered and left a room. I know his field. The field on that biotic was one I’ve never felt before.”
The persistent knot that formed in Kaidan’s stomach on Horizon tightens when Hackett asks the question he’s staunchly refused to ask out loud.
“Could something have altered it?”
“Not…not that I’m aware of.”
But what if something could? He shifts in his chair, and glances between the three of them.
“It isn’t him,” he repeats. Has to keep repeating it. It has to be the truth.
Hackett exhales. “We have reasons to believe that it is.”

Next to him, Wrex sniffs. His lip curls. “You’re worse than a couple’a pyjak in mating season.” Kaidan closes his locker harder than he means to. “I don’t know what you mean.” “Yeah, you do. I can smell it all over both of you,” Wrex huffs. “Could you take it outta the shuttle bay at least?”
