Portal's 26th Birthday

1 year ago, I was stuck in a homeless shelter where the staff took every chance they could to bully and abuse the single women in their care. (This is just the tip of the iceberg as far as my homeless period goes.)

Today, I'm living in my own apartment. Life still isn't easy, but I'm not giving up yet. Being 26 years old is very new and weird - it's not some big cultural milestone, and I don't have the means to celebrate my life and accomplishments like I want to. But I have the support of many wonderful friends, and I was able to buy myself a little chocolate cake and decorate it. I guess that's gonna have to be enough for now.

So here's to 26 years of life, the last 4 of which have been insanely tumultuous due to navigating the escape of an abusive family, moving to a new state, failing out of college for the second time, experiencing homelessness for the first time, and restarting my life from the ground up. And here's to (hopefully) many more years of life with stability and joy surrounded by people who truly love me.
