So, my dad died.
However, let me explain why I'm posting this because I don’t need or want any sympathy. The point of sharing this is really about others and maybe you, but I'll come back to that at the end...
I'm 110% totally okay with it and not upset. He was a ripe 87 so he had a great and full life. So you really don't need to say sorry or anything like that because this is just life. I get it's a thing some may say, but really it's not needed.
Definitely not needed is 'thoughts and prayers' as that truly is pointless and does nothing. I'd rather you physically felt sad for a loved one and farted because that would at least produce something.
The point of this (as I fly back yet again around the world from my, and his birthplace of Scotland) is to share a ‘moment’ and encourage you to make some.
In our busy lives we seem to be losing time for moments, and they are incredibly important. It becomes clear how important they are when someone dies, and it’s become even more clear to me as I get older (and Star Wars heads towards half a century) that these key moments in life become everything.
Without him I'd have no moments in my life. No wife, Star Wars, no toys, or no globe trotting and fabulous set of moments I've had the total fortune to have.
Trapped in a tin can with wings that somehow flies for 14hrs at a time, I thought I'd take the down time to share a moment about him. Packed with integrity, steely calm, strategic vision and presence, he was a pretty amazing guy. Whilst very much a man of his generation,  a man’s man, and stern but fair, he still raised three kids with an amazing lady against incredible odds. They made sure myself, brother and sister had some real kick ass moments in life.
Amongst the many great moments that I recall, one small, but key one oddly popped into my mind (certainly it was a big moment to a nine year old Star Wars obsessed kid). As he travelled and possibly had one of the most stressful times of his life, he still managed to think of me for a moment at an airport, and picked up a book as a gift for me called 'Star Wars - Han Solo's Revenge'.
A tiny, insignificant thing to many, but to me it’s a moment that was burned in the brain of young me (and is still years later) showing that he spared a thought at a time he barely had any to spare.
So if you are fortunate to have parents, a carer, or just someone special, please make a moment/s with them. Reminding them you love them, a small gift, time spent with them or even a telephone call can make a huge impact and leave a really memorable moment, and can be more impactful than you think.
Take a moment, make a moment, because to one Star Wars obsessed young kid, those moments will be with you... always.

Timothy Zahn - Hollow Victory - Analog Science Fiction/Science Fact - March 30, 1981 - Pages 12-29 A decade before Star Wars Heir to the Empire was released, Author Timothy Zahn got this short story published in in Analog. Timothy Zahn’s book was the first Star Wars novel since L. Neil Smith’s Lando series in 1983. (Which had followed Brian Daley’s Han Solo series and Alan Dean Foster’s Splinter Of The Mind’s Eye featuring Luke and Leia.) Zahn wrote two more books for the trilogy, Dark Force Rising and The Last Command, which, at least for a while, were the best new adventures with my friends Han, Luke, Leia, Chewie, Lando and the Droids books a person could hope for. Zahn went on to write a lot more Star Wars novels and short stories for anthologies. One of the characters he created for Heir To The Empire, Grand Admiral Thrawn, a blue skinned Imperial, appeared in several episodes of Rebels and became one of the Rebel heroes most difficult foes. After a quick search, it appears as if this short story wasn’t collected in any of Zahn’s short story collections. #timothyzahn #timothyzahnstarwars #starwarsnovels #starwarsshortstories #starwarsstories #analog #analogmagazine #analogdigest #heirtotheempire #thrawn #grandadmiralthrawn #starwarsrebels #darkforcerising #thelastcommand #splinterofthemindseye #hollowvictory #timothyzahnhollowvictory #timothy_zahn_hollow_victory #sciencefictionsciencefact #starwars #hansoloatstarsend #hansolosrevenge #hansoloandthelostlegacy #landocalrissianandthemindharpofsharu #landocalrissianandtheflamewindofoseon #landocalrissianandthestarcaveofthonboka #starwarsbooks #analogsciencefictionsciencefact (at Portland, Oregon) https://www.instagram.com/p/ByfW44Kh-Pd/?igshid=1sqyjmnbs6jyv
