Reconstitution

Ch. 1: Picking Up The Pieces

          It took three weeks, but Will finally declared what he called The Fish Shack finished. Hannibal couldn’t see much of a difference besides some new shingles and a better roof. Notably, he was not invited to look into the shack and there was a shiny new padlock attached to the door.

          Hannibal had hoped the completion of the shack would draw Will into the house. Hannibal had mentioned how beneficial the sauna would be for his shoulder several times. But it seemed the point of The Fish Shack was to give Will a place to store his accoutrements for his frequent trips to Lake Kisezers. Now, every morning as Hannibal sat in the sauna, literally and figuratively steaming, Will would be rummaging in the shack before walking 100 meters to the water.

          He’d return at dusk to the shack, only to emerge 45 minutes later smelling of sweat and fish, holding a Prussian Carp or two. If Hannibal never ate another carp in his life he thought he’d be quite content. It was getting taxing to think up new marinades and preparations for the dreaded fish. He’d even put them in an aspic hoping to deter Will, but Will kept bringing them and Hannibal kept preparing them. He refused to turn down any gift from Will Graham. Hannibal mused it was a bit like owning an outdoor cat — keeping to its own schedule unless it chose to leave a carcass on your doorstep or decided it needed feeding.

          But when the first frost of the season hit, Will came back in at 3 pm, stomping his feet and rubbing his wind-chapped hands together. Hannibal had smiled, mentioning that he’d just started making mulled wine and offering Will a glass. To his delight, Will accepted and suggested making a fire in the living room.

          What followed, was the first of many conversations. It had started out a bit rough, as was to be expected.

          “So…” Will sipped his wine as he tossed a cushion by the fireplace. “Kill anyone recently?”

          “Not very recently, no.” Hannibal side-stepped Will and settled onto the cushion, which surprised the empath. With a half smile, Will grabbed another cushion and sat by Hannibal. “Did you have somebody in mind?”

          “I might.” Will stretched his legs out, feet literally to the fire. “There’s a guy that lives on the water two houses down. He’s been poisoning the herring gulls to keep them off his pier.”

          Hannibal hummed, taking a sip of wine. “How discourteous.”

          “The gulls probably think so.”

          “Well, we can eliminate him, and I can add some red meat back to our diet…” Hannibal ran his finger around the rim of the mug. “Or I could break him down into chum and you could feed him to the fish the gulls eat.”

          Will laughed, short and stilted like he was unused to the sound. “Both. I’m craving a good steak; the rest is for the gulls.”

          Hannibal nodded, eyes following Will’s to the fire. With any luck, it would be a harsh winter, and this would be the first of many afternoons beside the flames with Will.

fic 1: literally no clue other than will drags a paralysed randall to hannibal’s house and kills him in front of hannibal. like. PLEASE. it was so good.

fic 2; this one was a single chapter iirc. hannibak got amnesia from a car crash and will was both pissed and worried. season 2 era i think. hannibal eventually regained his memories but slipped back into “perfect boyfriend” mode, which will realised he hated. he gets “murder boyfriend” hannibal back :)

Hannibal teaches humanities; Will teaches in STEM.

They have to work a project together. A presentation perhaps? Save our art program or fund this research project kind of thing. Something their dual expertise is required.

Is there such a fic? I have literally only read one hannigram fic and it was a three part series of post-fall one shots. I don’t want to write hannigram fic. Please. I can’t go back to jail.

But I have one humanities course after another until Christmas and then I graduate. I’ll be fucking 41. I’m tired and I need this. Need it. Give it to me. Somebody has it already. Is it you? I’ll pay 💰

it’s crazy how much hannibal suits canon compliant fics that either change one key detail or diverge in some minor way between seasons and how that deviation radically changes everything while also maintaining echoes of canon scenes, only now they exist within a new context. I’ve seen so many fics like that and they’re all so cool because they honour canon while also using our knowledge of the story to rework certain moments and change whole plot arcs. it’s amazing what people come up with
