Y'all, look how dark and heavy the resin was in this board of yellow pine I was planing at work (the resin is the darkest reddish-brown color at the top end of the board). The smell coming off of it was amazing but my plane blade was getting so sticky and every shaving was almost tacky to the touch. For real, though, I wish you could smell this. I love the smell of longleaf yellow pine.

There’s something very satisfying about having your most used hand tools at arms reach. Safely stored, ready to work. This week I’ve been fitting out the drawers in my workbench, French fitting planes and building sliding trays that will hold chisels, spokeshaves and rasps. This is something that’s been on my “to-do” list for quite some time now so it feels great to finally make time to do it. I’m waiting for my wood to arrive before I can begin work on my exterior wooden doors so this is a quick little project while I wait. Follow along with this week’s episodes… details on the Unplugged Woodshop website. #theunpluggedwoodshop #anunpluggedlife #woodworking #workbench #handtools #handplanes #handtoolsonly #unpluggedwoodworking #woodworkingproject #madebyhand #handcrafted #frenchfit #toronto #leslieville #unplugged (at The Unplugged Woodshop) https://www.instagram.com/p/CoGuZUEODZY/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The weather wasn't cooperating today, so I finally started to finish the last two pieces for the BN HQ that I did almost two years ago. Really this is the first woodworking I've done in two years. #woodwork #woodworking #woodworker #woodworkersofinstagram #diy #etsy #festool #festooldomino #vintagetools #antiquetools #grizzlyindustrial #dewalt #stanleytools #handplanes #maker #makersofinstagram #handmade #etsy https://www.instagram.com/p/Coi3uvdrUVP/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Working on a side-table prototype this afternoon using southern yellow pine. I started this prototype last year but couldn’t decide on the leg design but now I have! Here I’m planing the table top flat with a Clifton 5 1/2 along with preparing to cut the rails and legs to size… with some help 🐶

Here are some tips to help you maintain optimal performance: Keep your tool clean and dry after each use to prevent rust and damage. Sharpen the blade regularly to ensure clean and precise cuts. Use a honing stone or sandpaper to sharpen the blade. Apply a light coat of oil to the blade and other metal parts to prevent rust. Check the blade tension and adjust it as needed to prevent slipping or jamming. Replace any worn or damaged parts immediately to avoid further damage. Proper storage of your wood shaving tool is also important to maintain its performance: Store your tool in a dry and cool place to prevent rust and damage. Achieving Precision and Efficiency with Your Wood Shaving ToolWhen it comes to woodworking, precision and efficiency are key. Here are some tips to help you achieve both with your wood shaving tool: Choose the right blade for the job - a sharp blade will make all the difference in achieving a clean cut. Adjust the depth of the blade to control the thickness of the shavings. Hold the tool at a consistent angle for even shavings. Use a guide or fence to keep the tool on track. Don't forget to keep your tool well-maintained. Regularly sharpen the blade and clean any debris from the tool to ensure optimal performance. For beginners, a simple hand plane or chisel may be the best option. If you have more experience, consider a power tool like a rotary tool or jigsaw. If you are working on a large project, a power tool may be the best choice to save time and effort. For smaller projects, a hand tool may be more precise. Don't forget to consider the cost of the tool and how often you will use it. A high-quality tool may be worth the investment if you plan to use it frequently. Take your time to research and choose the right tool for your project. It will make a big difference in the final result. 🔍🛠️7. Consider . 🔪🎭 One technique is called "chip carving," which involves making precise cuts into the wood to create intricate patterns and designs. This technique requires a steady hand and a sharp blade. 🪚🌟 Another technique is called "relief carving," which involves carving away sections of the wood to create a three-dimensional design. This technique adds depth and texture to your woodworking projects. 🌟🎨🪚 For those looking for a challenge, try "intarsia," which involves creating a mosaic-like design by fitting together different pieces of wood. This technique requires patience and precision. 🪚🌲🎨 Finally, consider "scroll sawing," which involves using a specialized saw to cut intricate designs into thin pieces of wood. This technique is perfect for creating detailed patterns and shapes. 🎨🪚🪵 No matter which advanced technique you choose, remember to always prioritize safety and take your time. Rabbets in the lower cabinet shelf. These will nest into the notches I cut into the legs… I prefer this combination of skewed rabbeting block plane and shoulder plane instead of the standard rabbet plane…better sight lines, more control. Next step is to cut notches in the shelf, rabbet said notches, and carefully start fitting things together. From there it’ll onto the lower sliding doors! Lots happening, still lots to do. I don’t think about my novelty among the surfers but I am. Two conversations today. (I ride in on the face of a wave, end up near a surfer). He asks: “how are you doing that?!” “What?” I reply. “I mean, what are you riding?” I hold up my handplanes: “handplanes—for bodysurfing.” “Cool! Thanks!” …(later)… A surfer turns around and starts his takeoff in front of me. I go to ground, going to the bottom—it’s in my interest to be well out of the way of large heavy fiberglass boards moving fast. When I come up, the surfer is still there. He missed his wave. “You scared me!” he exclaims, but friendly. “Sorry,” I say, sincerely. “I didn’t know what you were! I thought you were a sea lion!” “Aren’t we all though?” I reply. #bodysurfing #stoke #handplane (at La Jolla Shores, San Diego, Calif.) https://www.instagram.com/p/CkmKWJtyJVn/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
