Supply and Demand of Home Fitness Equipment During the COVID-19 Pandemic
During 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic caused lockdowns across the nation as well as cause people to practice social distancing. Many gyms had to reduce their occupancy numbers or even close for periods of time. This resulted in a large demand for home fitness equipment such as dumbbells, benches, and weights. Moreso than that, more people started to focus on improving their overall health and fitness due to the pandemic. This increase in demand led to a decrease in the supply of home fitness equipment, which as a result caused the price of home fitness equipment to increase.
We will be taking a look at the change in supply and demand of home fitness equipment in 2020 to see the changes in supply, demand, and equilibrium price point.
Figure 1. The figure above shows the increase in demand for home fitness equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
The demand curve shifts upwards, resulting in an increase in the equilibrium price going from point E1 to E2. According to the Washington Post, the revenue for home and fitness equipment more than doubled to $2.3 billion and sales for cardio equipment such as treadmills increased as much as 135%. Other equipment such as dumbells have seen upwards of a 20% price increase as availability decreased.
Figure 2. The figure above shows the decrease in the supply for home fitness equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
The supply curve shifts upwards, resulting in an increase in the equilibrium price going from point E1 to E2. As mentioned earlier, as the demand for gym equipment increases, the supply decreases. According to Bloomberg Law, many gyms such as LA fitness and 24-hour fitness have faced losses upwards of $29.2 billion and have memberships decreased by about 15% compared to pre-pandemic. Also, many smaller privately owned gyms have had to completely shut down.
However, during the pandemic, the decrease in supply meant that second-hand sellers on websites such as Ebay, OfferUp, and Craigslist were able to sell their gym equipment at higher prices than they normally would sell them at. Taking this into account, this is also why the equilibrium price increased since buyers were willing to pay higher prices than they usually would. Even after the pandemic had slowed down and things were normalizing again, gym memberships did not return to their pre-pandemic levels since much more people had home gyms now.
The statistics of home fitness equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic illustrate a key concept in economics of supply and demand. As the pandemic hit and people were stuck at home, demand for fitness equipment increased while supply decreased. Both these factors as well as companies and second-hand sellers marking up prices resulted in an increase in equilibrium price. This is how the market for home fitness equipment changed during the pandemic.

Virtual-reality Jacket Simulates Hugs-And More
Virtual-reality Jacket Simulates Hugs-And More
Part of my WIP is imagining what life in a 100 years from now might be like. To do so, I’m building on exciting-sounding technology news which will probably be everyday affairs in a century. Having loved Virtual-reality goggles after trying them out a few months ago, I was particularly impressed by the announcement on The Washington Post that Disney unveils a prototype virtual-reality jacket to…

France bans smartphones in school
By Hamza Shaban, Washington Post, July 31, 2018
When French students return to school in September, they’ll have to leave one of their most prized possessions at home--their smartphone.
French lawmakers on Monday passed legislation banning students as old as 15 from bringing smartphones and tablets to school, or at least requiring that they be turned off, according to the Agence France-Presse. Officials in support of the new rule described the policy as a way to shield children from addictive habits and to safeguard the sanctity of the classroom.
“We know today that there is a phenomenon of screen addiction, the phenomenon of bad mobile-phone use,” education minister Jean-Michel Blanquer told French news channel BFMTV, according to CNN. “Our main role is to protect children and adolescents. It is a fundamental role of education, and this law allows it.”
The law, however, makes exceptions for educational use, extracurricular activities and for students with disabilities, the AFP reports. French high schools can choose to impose a less-stringent ban on Internet-connected devices.
Even before the new policy was voted in, French law prohibited students from using their phones while class was in session. But during the 2017 French presidential election, Emmanuel Macron pledged to impose a school ban on phones entirely.
This isn’t the first French law designed to beat back the encroachment of digital technology in everyday life. Last year the government passed a law requiring French companies to draft rules that limited work emails and work-related technology outside the office. Dubbed the “right to disconnect,” French officials said the legislation aimed to reduce job-related stress and prevent employee burnout.
“Employees physically leave the office, but they do not leave their work. They remain attached by a kind of electronic leash, like a dog,” Benoît Hamon, Socialist member of Parliament and former French education minister, told the BBC. “The texts, the messages, the emails: They colonize the life of the individual to the point where he or she eventually breaks down.”
