It’s Hamir time! 🔨
This guy went through a lot of changes since his first iteration. He started off a bit more of an Armadillo than Pangolin, had only a single 2h hammer, and was named “Armorus” early on.
At some point during gameplay/animation development of Hamir, I proposed that we give him two hammers instead of one so that I could keyframe a more unique move set from Artemis!

Strange Tales #141
Cover Date: February 1966 On-Sale Date: November 11, 1965
Tumblr media
"The Final Defeat" was advertised last issue, but this issue is "Let There Be Victory". Whose victory? We shall see. The story sort of closes out the Doc vs. Dormie arc that's been going on for a year. While Doc and Dormie won't face off again this arc, things aren't quite done yet.
There appears to be lots to tell this installment. The splash is the start of the story with Mordo bragging to Dormie about his incredibly dishonorable act. Is the lord of the dark dimension grateful? Heck no! Dormie could have done it himself! And he's got choice words for the Baron. "You -- a bungling, talentless, powerless mortal -- you dared presume to think you could help Dormammu??!!" Don't mince words, flamehead! Tell us how you really feel! Dormie then banishes Mordo, weird onesie and all, using something that looks like a flying carpet square with a big hole in it.
Tumblr media
Dormie then proceeds to demand the other dimension lords crown him King of Everything. But before they can respond, Doc is awake again and makes the ultimate playground challenge. "I wanna rematch, hothead! And if you refuse it means you're a scaredy-cat!" Naturally, this ancient, supremely powerful being that's ruled a dimension for uncountable ages falls for this bit of reverse psychology.
The battle starts again! Once again, who is winning goes back and forth between the combatants while the camera occasionally cuts to The Ancient One surrounded by the dimensional lords and Clea, still watching in her magic cage in the Dark Dimension through the floaty, smoky TV thing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And so it goes, until, finally...
Tumblr media
Doc makes Dormie renew his oath never to attack the Earth.
Tumblr media
Dormie agrees and the event ends. The players and audience all return to their home bases. The Ancient One has finally returned to his cool pad instead of the dank, musty cave. Doc does the old dude a favor and sends his cloak to retrieve Hamir. Then immediately sends him out to get food.
Tumblr media
We're only at the top of page seven right now, and we definitely don't need that amount of space to wrap things up so nastiness awaits in the wings. First, Dormie's magic TV appears to give Doc mystical flip of the bird.
Tumblr media
Now, in their first battle, Doc made Dormie promise never to harm Clea. This was actually the first part of the promise with Earth second. Presumably this promise is still in effect, and we learn later on that Dormammu breaking his promises has consequences, so what's up with this? Maybe banishing her isn't actually harming her. Now it's Stephen's time to yell and shake his fist in the air. Dormie then rants and raves to whomever will listen.
Tumblr media
The Ancient One then gives Doc his next mission. He releases the Orb of Agamotto, still referred to as a mystic globe from Mordo's curse and shows Doc where all the Mordo evil hotspots are. Doc's gotta clean 'em up. Doc's heading back to his pad in Greenwich Village, but before he gets there, something is going on. Doc still hasn't installed door or window locks or any mystic shielding. Kaecilius, the Demon and a mysterious third whose face is hidden in shadow and a Freddy Krueger fedora are in the Sanctum Sanctorum are plotting something nefarious. To make it less likely for Doc to detect, they are using a regular bomb and nothing mystical. The third figure puts the bomb IN A LIT BRAZIER! I don't know if they are incredibly stupid for putting an explosive device in a fire, or if they are incredibly smart for designing a bomb that can withstand the flames until they trigger their remote.
Doc returns via the floppy bullseye spell, mystic globe in tow. Outside we see the mysterious fedora wearer about to trigger the bomb. Inside, Doc says "I really need a nap!" and the story closes with an image the brazier showing the bomb inside.
Tumblr media
The panel says the end but obviously things are far from over. This arc was first reprinted in Doctor Strange Classics in the mid-80s. In order to give it a cleaner ending, the panels dealing with the bomb plot are excised and the image of the bomb in the final panel is removed. As for the story itself, half is a rehash of the battle from the previous issue. Fortunately this isn't the main point of the story. It's really a set up for something much bigger in a few months. I like the latter half of the story much more than the battle. The battle appears to be won, but lots of related things are about to happen. I've got hand it to Lee and Ditko. They plotted this whole thing out very well.

Hamir Kalyani Thillana - Three of Us
Recently someone recommended me to watch Three of Us, and I did. Shefali Shah, queen of acting, is the protagonist, who is visiting a Konkan town to remember the familiar faces and sights from her childhood, before memories fade due to the onset of dementia. While the story is melancholic and gives a indie-like feel. I got surprised seeing a BN dance practice scene! The scene focuses on the…

The Actual Meaning of True Love's Kiss
(Stephen Strange/Wong, G, 4.6k, ~20 min reading time)
Summary: Stephen gets cursed. It's fine, not a problem, easy fix, Tina explains. Everything he'll need is a "True Love's Kiss." It's not fine, very much a problem, and not easy at all. Thankfully Wong is in the same room and having a couple revelations of his own.
Technically I wrote this fic as a gift for @sanctum-stinker at the end of last year, but that's not going to stop me from posting it as my entry for the March prompt "acceptance" of the @yearoftheotpevent now that I actually can post it! (Especially since time to write is tight right now and I want to focus on Unity of Magic)
This is very very self-indulgent and I'm not even going to try and hide it. Especially since this is the first time I actually gathered the courage to tag Master Jio, who is a recurring OC of mine you'll know if you've read my other works.
Enjoy, I sure know I did writing it!~

I'm not going to buy the DVD to confirm if this is true, but I've been informed that the MoM director's commentary confirms Hamir is dead. When Wanda pulled him into the Mirror Dimension? Yep, he died. I am so mad right now I can't even begin to imagine how they thought "you know what this movie needs? more dead poc!" Also, the recent Strange comics apparently retconned this, but Hamir was Wong's dad for a while in the comics and I'm upset Wong and Hamir never got to be father and son in the MCU
Oh man dear Nonny :( That really is a wasted opportunity. Having Hamir and Wong be father and son would have been a great way to show a family aside from the main character. Ever notice that no one in these movies have a family unless they’re the main star of that particular film? 🤷🏻‍♀️ It’s so strange to me. Like show the families 🤣 But yeah, giving Wong a father would have been great. Someone he can confide in, and actually be affectionate too. I can see him being such a protective son too. It would have given him a chance to show his soft, gentle side. Not to mention give Hamir more of a prominent role.
I’d love it if he got a scene where Stephen realizes that they were father and son. Hamir’s always so chill and goes with the flow while Wong’s always planning ten steps ahead and barking orders like a drill sergeant 🤣 Like how do these two share the same blood? They’re polar opposites. And that in turn would open the discussion about Wong’s mom and other potential family members. Just more Wong lore pls 🙏🏻

Strange Tales #136
Cover Date: September 1965 On-Sale Date: June 8, 1965
Tumblr media
After two issues of absence from the cover, Doc gets a sliver of the bottom this month. Also this month, Doc's cloak gets the color scheme we are used to. The border is finally gold. Ironically, on the cover the border is still red. We some of Doc's fellow mystics, a few who will pup up again over the years. Doc still exists mostly separate from the Marvel Universe at large so it's nice to see some expansion of the internal world. This is another side adventure that takes us from the main story arc, but we all need a break from time to time.
The splash is not directly connected to the action, but shows an evil, impish figure in Doc's clothing. We finally get to see the "properly" colored cloak and it's not even Doc wearing it. A blurb at the bottom calls Doc "the world's strangest hero." A good pun is always welcome. This isn't welcome.
Travel now to the Dark Dimension. As she's been suspecting for the last two episodes, Dormammu has figured out it was Clea who sabotaged the Mindless One's barrier. Before she can say "Boo," or whatever they say in the Dark Dimension, she is trapped. Bizarrely, the bottom half of her body disappears. Fortunately it reappears in the next panel.
Tumblr media
Dormie is keeping her around so she can watch him trash Doc. He quickly grows bored of Clea and turns to Mordo in the usual magic floaty, smoky TV thing. Dormie calls out Mordo for the bumbler he really is until Mordo reveals that Doc is searching for 'Eternity.' "Oh crap! That's no good! Stop him Mordo!" Dormie has such a great angry face. It's so Ditko.
Tumblr media
Mordo issues an APB for Doc, promising death for anyone who disobeys.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Doc floats around the city seeking out allies who may know who 'Eternity' is. Seriously, he's floating from window to window like he's dropping in for tea, asking a quick question and moving on.
Tumblr media
By the way, I guess no one reminded Stan and Steve to tell us about the mystery woman. It's been nearly 60 years and we still don't know. It's a pity Jed McKay didn't pick this up. He had a knack for that. The next visit is to a man, so he gets a name. Rama Kaliph will show up again, but eventually meet an untimely end. Unfortunately for Doc, Mordo has entranced him and he is of no help. The final ally we see Doc visit introduces us to The Aged Genghis. This dude, even older than The Ancient Dude that Doc pals around with here and there will play a small, but significant role in several future plots. And, at least once, he cause quite an annoyance. His presence is significant here because he seems to give Doc a leg up here by knowing about 'Eternity.'
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So Doc gets a beat up old scroll that has (possibly) Eternity written on it. As all of us would eat the food in that old, unlabeled can of food we found in the attic, Doc recites that short and unimaginative spell. We don't even get one of those cool disclaimers like: For the sake of the world we can't reveal the spell on these pages.
Tumblr media
As Doc heads out, Mordo detects the spell and arrives a moment too late, as usual. You'd think that Dormie would have fired him by now and hired someone at least moderately competent. There's got to be someone else on Earth who can do this. Mordo shows Dormie the scroll. "Oh yeah, that's not what he was looking for. Just keep an eye out in case he manages to survive and come back."
Doc has arrived at the other end of the squarish tunnel and finds masks. Lots of masks in huge columns. "WTF?" thinks Doc. He immediate runs into someone bound to some circular thing. Doc removes the blindfold thing and we see it's the imp thing from the splash page. The imp switches places with Doc and now we know why he was dressed as Doc on the splash page. The imp covers Doc's face with a big blob of snot so he can add Doc's mask to his collection.
Doc is completely powerless except for his power to think. But the imp has reckoned without the one thing that his thoughts can do, control the Cloak of Levitation. Next we get a page of filler as the imp struggles with the cloak which ends when he cracks off Doc's mask. Doc turns the tables and commands the imp to free him. Afterwards, the imp has other plans and sends all his captives after Doc. Despite being and interdimensional demon, all his victims look human. It seems only we are smart enough (or stupid enough) to find our way to the imp's dimension.
Tumblr media
Using a trick from the early days, Doc uses the All-Purpose Amulet to free all the slaves from the imps control and then turns it on the imp himself. Doc destroys all the masks and apparently this is the end of the imp's threat. The imp never shows up again, so maybe Doc was right. Or Doc has improved in his mopping up skills.
Doc returns home and goes to the Ancient One's temporary pad. Hamir greets him. "Where you been, Doc dude? The Ancient One's been calling for you. Figure out this 'Eternity' thing yet?" "Not yet, I gotta non-consensually probe the old man's mind." "Really?" "Yup!" Next month: Doc v. Doc's teacher
Yeah, it's a diversion, but an enjoyable one. Lee and Ditko create some good fodder for future writers. The imp isn't a real threat and traps Doc through trickery that he might not have fallen for if he was in a better state of mind. There are enough threads woven in the first half of the story to hold things together. The diversion is worth it. Mordo's downfall from savage antagonist to slightly useful idiot is painfully evident here. He avoids being incinerated by Dormie by successfully grasping at straw. For him, it only gets worse from here. On to next month, the story without an antagonist.

Why did this end up being 1k+ words? It's just Stephen trying to talk to the Ancient One and noting all the differences between his Kamar-Taj and this Kamar-Taj. This is getting long enough that I should stick it on AO3, but I have neither title nor summary.
They took a portal to Kamar-Taj. He only hesitated slightly. It wasn't like The Ancient One could strand him on Everest midway through. Stepping through a portal only took a second. Though to be fair to her, it had worked. He had learned how to surrender, was still learning that lesson.
One of the temple's courtyards could clearly be seen through the orange glow. It was empty of people, but the deepening dark of the sky explained why. The Ancient One-he'd have to remember to get her name this time or at least something to call her by- stepped through the portal without glancing back. Mordo pushed him forward and he nearly tumbled through. Reality rearranged itself so he didn't.
The smell of spice hit him first. He'd nearly forgotten what it smelled like. Chili, cumin, and other spices whose names he'd long forgotten. Someone had told him once, naming each spice as they handed it to him so he could sprinkle it in the pot. Wong perhaps?
His breath caught and he forcibly exhaled and inhaled. The air was crisp and chilly, settling into his lungs. The bite of winter was not yet gone. It was quiet too, though he could hear the faint sound of bells ringing in the wind, the faint flapping of flags hung between roofs.
The portal closed behind them and The Ancient One turned, walking inside. She didn't look back. He followed before Mordo could push him again.
The hallways had less color in them now. Their latest crop of initiates had started to put up whatever artworks they could find on the walls after they had finally finished rebuilding. There had been an entire wall full of graffiti-style art in one of the west hallways, thankfully on canvas. Master Yama would have made them all scrub it off the walls otherwise, no matter who was or wasn't involved.
Their footsteps were very loud; he missed the rugs. America had loved them, stating that she hadn't really gotten to see many rugs in her travels. She'd enjoyed beating them on the line to shake out the dust, dirt, and other debris on cleaning day.
He swallowed, footsteps faltering. America was gone. She had been pulled into one of the chasms. Her hand reaching for him before the multiverse had taken her. He had no way of knowing where she was or even if she was safe.
Grief threatened to rise, sharp and sticky. Fog covered it, pushing it beneath a blanket of calm.
Ahead of them, The Ancient One stepped into a room. He followed her in.
It looked remarkably similar to the room he'd first met her in. The balcony was where he remembered it, with the snowcapped mountains beyond. The bookshelves were against the same walls, the low table in the same place, and Master Hamir sipping tea in the very same spot. Why was Master Hamir here?
The Ancient One gestured to an empty seat. He sat.
Mordo stepped close, towered over him. His hands ached, deeper, near the tendons. He wanted to rub them, warm them. The cold wasn't helping. But Mordo was still there. He wouldn't show weakness.
Power nudged him, an offering. He pushed it away gently. This Mordo wasn't his Mordo. But he would probably try to kill him all the same at some point. The Mordo from universe 838 had tried too.
"Mordo," The Ancient One said and held an entire conversation with her gaze when Mordo looked at her. Her eyes flicked to the doorway again and Mordo sighed. He gave Stephen a long look before leaving. He couldn't interpret it. He had long lost familiarity with any of Mordo's expressions. Hate being the exception.
Silently, Master Hamir pushed a cup of tea towards him. It was filled just enough so it wouldn't splash when his hands inadvertently jerked. He picked it up and immediately curled his hands around it. Warmth seeped into his fingers, the ache turning gentler. It wouldn't ease, not for a long time yet.
The Ancient One closed the door, sat across them, and stared at Stephen intently. What did she see? He probably looked the same as in her visions. His hands weren't strong enough for shaving yet and Soul had said not to use any power. He had only ignored it the once.
Master Hamir handed her a cup. She took it, still keeping her eyes on him, and took a sip. The same blanket calm was on her face.
"You are different than I expected," she said.
He frowned at her. She'd never introduced herself nor had anyone introduced her this time.
"And you are?"
"They call me The Ancient One," she said and offered nothing further. Cryptic as always.
"That's a mouthful. Can I get a name?" Time laughed in his head.
The Ancient One laughed too, the blanket calm breaking out into amusement. Incredibly, Master Hamir laughed as well. He'd never laughed when Stephen had been at Kamar-Taj, though he did remember some of the initiates trying to make him.
"You can call me Morgan," The Ancient One said. Morgan, like Morgan le Fay, like Tony Stark's daughter. Grief welled in him again, hot and sharp as it had been during Stark's funeral. The memory of Morgan crying in her mother's arms rose, sour. He cut it before it could form fully and took another sip of tea.
"Well, Morgan, " he said. "Why am I here?"
"To learn magic of course."
She'd rejected him the first time, had made him wait five hours on the doorstep before letting him back in. Why had she changed her mind now? The stones laughed at him. Right, he was changing things by just being himself. Should he tell her?
Time wouldn't have. It loved its surprises.
But, she could help him. Thanos was coming. It seemed to be a fixed event in every universe he'd visited. You've only visited three properly, Reality said. It sounded amused.
He opened the connection and let the stones' presence come forward. They were always with him now, though they were kind enough to stick to the background.
We don't want to fracture your sanity any further, Mind said, ominous. The world chilled, sharpened. Familiar unease twisted in his stomach. The hole in him gaped, a muted horror starting to fill it. Yellow-orange threads dulled the emotions before they could fully sharpen. His mind went a little fuzzy, artificial calm taking over him. Why were they doing this?
It's not safe yet, Soul said gently. It was always gentle, warming him down to his core.
"You are thinking very hard," Morgan said, drawing him back into the room. She was observing him as if he was a fascinating relic that she had come across. He could be, he definitely wasn't human anymore. Maybe they'd store him like an object, locked away in a glass container until he chose a sorcerer to bond with.
That's the Cloak of Levitation, Space said, helpfully. Not you.
Should he trust her?
Your choice, the stones offered, unhelpful.
Why couldn't they make the choice for him? They owned him. He had offered them everything had, everything he was, in an effort to draw them back together so they could be the universal anchors once more. It hadn't worked. It was too late and reality had shattered around them.
The Ancient One, Morgan, was still waiting for an answer. She was patient, but how long would that last?
He took another sip. The cup was empty.
"I already know magic," he started slowly. Morgan leaned forward, folding her hands underneath her chin.
"There was an incident."
Grief surged through him before it was quickly blunted and pushed away. The anger that would have come at that wasn't there. He suspected it was suppressed too.
"An incident?" Still the same blankness, though Master Hamir was starting to look apprehensive.
He nodded, reaching into his pocket to draw out the time stone, and put it on the table between them. Master Hamir gasped, immediately standing up. He and The Ancient One exchanged a look before he was striding out the door. He'd go to check on the time stone in the library. It would still be there.
"I ended up here from the future," he said. Morgan started to ask a question before they were interrupted by Master Hamir stepping out of a portal with the Eye of Agamotto held in his hands. It was open and the stone inside was glowing.
Master Hamir placed it on the table, very nearly dropping it, and backed away quickly. The Ancient One seemed to be speechless.
He was too. He hadn't really believed the stones when they had explained. He'd been trying to push himself out of his mind. He'd been so sure he was dreamwalking, that there was another him trapped with him. Was that why they had decided to blunt his emotions?
"Explain," The Ancient One demanded, "now."
