whew. Surreal.
I was approached back in May to do banner artwork for dA's pride event (you can check out the journal here.) This piece was a challenge for a lot of reasons, emotional and compositional, but I think I like what I arrived at. I wanted to try to capture the joy i've experienced in connecting with others in the LGBT+ community, worldwide. To that end, I tried to select places I had at least some, small connection to, by way of the folks I've met over the years.
I hope you find something that looks familiar in it! : -)
To close, some songs that helped rear this to completion, and which make my heart full:
Love is Love, Pt. 2 by Quantum Tangle. If you know me in any personal capacity I've probably rec'd it at some point, because it makes me really emotional. To be terribly honest-- probably the only manifestation of the phrase “love is love” that made me cry.
Colors by June LaLonde, a beautiful little pride flag anthem. I love that she draws on natural imagery to describe the flags... And I dare you to find a song that rhymes “chromatic aberration” so artfully x-)
Les Fleurs by Ivy Sole. I am very new to Ivy Sole's full discography, but Les Fleurs hits hard and cuts deep, in the best way. Very “bring me flowers when I am living” energy.
◆
A final acknowledgement that I want to make, in the spirit of transparency and out of respect for my own feelings about monetizing this part of my identity... I was paid 500$ for this piece, which I intend to put away so that I can hire a diversity editor for my webcomic, Ghost River. Barring disaster, any remaining amount will be donated to an indigenous sovereignty effort (in the spirit of GR) and a LGBT+ nonprofit-- I haven't decided which organizations, yet, but I'm eyeballing the Black Visions Collective. Suggestions always welcome : -)

The Vancouver Island & Sunshine Coast Loop: A Solo Cycle Tour of BC’s Finest Retirement Communities. Part 2
Day 4: I hit the road at 7am. A quick ride on the Trans Canada woke me up and brought me to my daily bakery stop.
Serious Coffee for Serious Cyclists.
After second breakfast, I only had to follow one road: the 19A. With wide shoulders and no navigation required, I made good time up the coast. It would have been top notch riding if it wasn’t for the EXCESSIVE WIND that blew all day for NO REASON AT ALL.
The best views were at Union Bay, where I slowed down a little too much until I realized the ferry I wanted to catch was coming up soon. I gunned it the last 25km to Comox, which was, shockingly, FULL OF HILLS. I gave up on my granny gear zen and let my rage carry me to the ferry terminal, where I caught the 3:25 just in time. The wind refused to chill out so I sat inside and charged my phone while I watched the white caps dance on the ocean.
Once I landed in Powell River it was only a few minutes to the campsite. After 113km my legs once again felt perfectly normal, which was weird. Sitting on a bike saddle, however, was deeply uncomfortable. I decided to walk the 3km to Townsite Brewing, stopping to gorge on veggie korma and stuffed potato naan on the way.
I didn’t have room for another beer but I drank it anyway because I had biked HUNDREDS OF KILOMETERS to get there.
I met this beautiful cat on the way back to the campsite, where I quickly fell asleep.
Day 5 began with gear sorting. It seemed like a lot.
I was a bit apprehensive about biking on the Sunshine Coast as I heard it was even hillier than Vancouver Island, but if the family camping next to me could bike to Lund from Powell River with a trailer and a young kid, there's no reason Gavin and I couldn't. The hills were very present, but still doable. I only had 27km to go, and I would have enjoyed the long decent into Lund if I knew I wouldn't have to climb back up eventually.
Lund was a tiny, bustling hub. I was surprised at the size of the grocery and liquor store (also surprised there was a liquor store at all). The store didn’t have much fresh produce, but I can live off beans, chips, and hot dogs for DAYS, thank you very much. Next I headed to Nancy's Bakery for a couple sandos and one of their famous blackberry cinnamon buns (which I'd been thinking about since the last time I was there, two years ago). I found a patio spot next to an outlet and gave my phone one last top up, because I couldn’t count on charging anything on Savary Island. With a couple hours before my water taxi reservation, I found myself on my own with nothing to do, which hadn't happened yet on the trip. I decided to call my parents and tell them what I was doing. I promised my mom I’d write a blog post so I could share some photos (hi, mom!). It was bizzy on Savary Island: rubbermaids, bags, boxes of booze, bikes, and a line of trucks lined up the dock. The people quickly dispersed into various homes, cabins, guest houses, resorts, and moss covered trailers. I went up the hill (no matter where I went, it was up a hill) to the campground: a loose scattering of wooden tent pads on some guy’s property. The owner told me “There is no check in. You just find a site that looks good and settle in.” Cool.
Of course the only rain I saw on the trip happened as soon as I arrived at a sub-tropical island. I expected to have a nap ASAP, but instead opted for a cold shower and laundry in the sink. I couldn’t fully clean my smelly bike shorts with Camp Suds; I could only make them slightly less smelly.
Savary is a long, skinny island filled with lush rainforest and edged with white sandy beaches. After a comfortable and pitch black night, I was up at a decent hour. Day 6 was my rest day, which meant biking without all my gear. My legs felt overqualified for the 8km rip across the island and back.
It was Gavin’s rest day, too.
After a big brunch scramble and a hot dog, I headed to the beach, which was just as sunny and glorious as I imagined. I took a dip in the ocean, read, ate a bag of chips and a hot dog. When I ran out of food I went back to my camp and made an underwhelming dinner of overcooked veggies and terrible instant mashed potatoes with a hot dog.
One of the best books I’ve read in a long time. It’s about a girl growing up in a survivalist, ultra conservative, and unsafe family fighting for education, despite never setting foot in a classroom until the age of 17. I left my copy at a community library on Savary. Feel free to go get it. On day 7 I caught the morning water taxi back to Lund, then made one more stop at Nancy's before tackling the 3km uphill. It was overcast and muggy. Sweaty and grimy. The ride to Powell River was quick though, and I treated myself to a Buddha bowl and cold beer for lunch.
It was another 27km to Saltery Bay...
... which was an exceptionally beautiful provincial park.
Of course the campground attendant came to collect fees while I was in the middle of washing myself from a pot.
I felt resourceful that day. Like I belonged out there. It was the little things, like seeing the cycle route sign even though I didn’t see any other cyclists, collecting large rocks to hold my tent down because the ground was too hard for stakes, or improvising a bear hang because the campground didn’t have a bear proof locker for cyclists (get it together, Saltery). Part of me still feels like the kid who spends all her time reading, watching LOTR EE marathons, and making pizza at Panago for $6 an hour. I never grew up thinking of myself as athletic or woodsy, and compared to many people I'm not, but it's about time I realize I can do this on my own. And that I love it.
Day 8 began with a serene ferry ride to Earl's Cove. Out of the entire trip, I was the most nervous about the upcoming ride from Earl's to Sechelt. I knew it would be windy, narrow, and steep, and I didn’t want to end up schmucked on the side of the 101 because some yahoo hauling a yacht, four kayaks, and a dozen mountain bikes couldn't be bothered to slow down on a blind corner. But at this point I had 500km of experience, a bag of Sour Cherry Blasters, and my screaming pink cycling jersey to get through the day safely. It was relatively quiet early Wednesday morning, and the beautiful ride turned out to be one of my favourite sections.
I took a detour on Redrooffs Road after Half Moon Bay to get off the highway for a bit. It was scenic enough, but the elevation was stupid. I hadn’t walked Gavin up that many hills since Thetis Lake Regional Park. Things started to go downhill from there. Metaphorically of course, as the hills only went up.
Traffic volume started to increase at Sechelt, where I stopped for candy. The Cherry Blasters picked me right up, but not even a sugar rush can hold off eight days of fatigue indefinitely. The last few kilometers to Gibsons weren't exactly painful, but they were not pleasant. My faith in Google Maps’ elevation estimates might never recover. My bike chain was dry and squeaking, but I thought if I could just make it to my destination and offload my gear I could zip back into town and find a bike shop and get some lubricant. In reality, once I finally arrived at Mike's place, after 83km and over 1400m of elevation gain, I couldn't bring myself to take the hill down into Gibsons again. "Can olive oil work on bike chains" is not my proudest Google search, but weary, smelly, and perpetually damp cyclists are nothing if not humble. And the answer is no, not really, but olive oil is better than nothing.
Thankfully Persephone Brewing was within walking distance. My healing began with an order of spring rolls and a rye farmhouse ale.
That evening, as I settled in to my tent, I heard the soft whisper of my couch back at home. The call of the bahn mis at Chickpea that Brian said were amazing. The whinny of my stupidly sensitive horse on Red Dead Redemption 2 Online. The sweet yet powerful purr of Alley Cat, my gentle golden nugget. I was a two hour ride away from completing the biggest physical achievement of my life. A year ago running 5k was a stretch, and biking 11km to Richmond was a chore. I wanted to do an ambitious cycle tour to see if I could. And I can. There’s nothing particularly special about me, or most people, but that doesn’t have to stop us from getting shit done.
Day 9 was a quick ride down to the ferry, then a hilly ride through West Van on Marine Drive. Once I hit the Lions Gate Bridge, I knew I was home free.
Coming home after 9 days and 590km of a door-to-door solo cycle tour was incredibly satisfying.
Almost as satisfying as seeing my number one precious sweet potato again!
This sweet pup is my number two.
Maybe one day I’ll do a proper Google Maps route but this is the general idea.
Highlight(s): the views on Salt Spring, Sokka’s beautiful kitten face, the ride up from Nanaimo, the white sandy beaches at Savary, the peaceful ferry ride from Saltery, the surprisingly doable hills after Earl's Cove, the pics of my niece and nephew smiling on their first day back at school, the beers and food at Persephone, the moment I realized that I absolutely crushed every part of my ambitious plan. Lowlight: Thetis Lake Regional Park. Gold star: Gavin. This humble, unassuming, steel frame hybrid has been a true star, solid and dependable. I love this bike. I love what we can do together. Runner up: The weather. Almost perfect. Runner up: My legs. You know what you did.

How to Deal With Wedding Photographers
Photographers salt lake city When looking for the perfect way to get the best wedding photographs one can, many turn to the professionals at a Salt Lake City wedding photography company. Now, even though these Utah Wedding Photographers may be centered in Salt Lake City and are only available there, there are many other trustworthy photographers all over the place. When selecting a wedding photography company to document your very special day, make sure that you don't skimp out and hire a cheap agency. You want the very best for your special day and would be very disappointed with yourself if you did not do all of the background work necessary to hiring the best possible photography agency. First of all, make sure that you look through the company's photographer's personal portfolios, which can most of the time be located online on the company's web page. From there you should be able to decipher who's style, at that company, you like the best and are interested in possibly hiring for your wedding. Make sure that you don't just look at one company in your search, but that you look at many. A single company can be prone to hiring a photographer with a special sort of style, not necessarily the one you want. After you have found a few photographers that you are especially interested in, make sure that you arrange a time with each of them, prior to the wedding date, and discuss how you would like to see things documented and stuff like that. If you decide that you don't like the person very much, DO NOT hire him. You and your wedding photographer have to connect so that he is able to pick up on your moods, your likes and dislikes, and to be able to take photographs from those facts. Next, after you have found your favorite photographer, set a date. Make sure that he is going to be available. If he is not, then you will have to maybe switch to your second favorite photographer. If this happens to you, do not worry; little snares like this happen to everyone when they are planning their weddings. Whether it is with their caterer or with their dress seamstress, little inconveniences happen to everyone. After you have set the date and made sure that your photographer is available, it is time to show the photographer around the surrounding area where the wedding will be. You want your photographer to be comfortable and familiar with the setting of the wedding to make sure that he gets the best possible shots. If he is already familiar with the place then that's great. If not, walk him around; give him your own personal tour, pointing out your favorite parts about it. Once all of the kinks are worked out, then it is time for you to sit back and relax, enjoy the festivities and be comfortable with the things that you have arranged. Everything should flow smoothly if everything has been organized properly, so there is no need to worry.
Photographers salt lake city Wow, what a slice. I never thought I'd hear myself saying it, but we are indeed leaving Alberta. I've lived here just over 13 years, and in that time fell deeply in love with the Rockies. My wife and I decided a few months ago that it was time to move on; time for a change. Neither of us have ever sat too long in one place, and this has been the longest for both of us; a testament to how good Calgary has been.
It was here I started using a 35mm camera seriously, enough so that it's now a part-time career. Weddings and portraits make up the bulk of my work, but my first love is shooting landscapes in Banff National Park. This sparked the idea of conducting photo tours for visitors to the area, and I took an interpreter's course with the Mountain Parks Heritage Interpretation Association.
When conducting photo tours, I fell into a rhythm of locations I would bring my clients. I'll share it for the benefit of you photographers looking for a day or two of planned shooting. It is mostly based on a book published by a friend of mine, Darwin Wiggett, called "How to Photograph the Canadian Rockies". We struck up our friendship in 2003, when he asked for some preliminary editing help with the content, as well as some field testing of his chapter on Kananaskis Country.
Photo Tour Destinations
From Calgary, I'd head west, then south down Hwy #40 and depending on the wind, would shoot sunrise at any of the following locations: Lorrette Ponds, Wedge Pond, or Mount Kidd reflecting pools. The last one is a little more sheltered, as the wind will easily ruin the classic mountain reflection shot in the other two. Another favourite location is a little-known place called Meadow Lake, which reflects Mount Yamnuska quite nicely.
To get there from the Trans Canada Highway, head north on Highway 1X, which is at the west end of Morley Flats. Turn right at the "T" intersection, and a little over a kilometer east is the trailhead parking lot on the left. Walk along the service road to the west, and you'll see a path off to the south about half a kilometer from the parking lot. The trail itself is a short 10-minute walk, which is well-worn, but there may be a few fallen trees to step over. It then opens up to a beautiful meadow just before you see the lake, suggesting the reason for it's name. The location is at N51 06.965, W115 05.659.
Photographers salt lake city After sunrise, I'd then head to Banff townsite and take the gondola ride up Sulfur Mountain, a popular destination for tourists. The view at the top is outstanding, as it overlooks the Bow Valley. Look for Two Jack Lake (it's another prime spot for sunrise, offering an alternate view of Mount Rundle from the usual Vermillion Lakes), and Lake Minnewanka, a popular scuba diving destination. Back down from Sulfur Mountain, I'd then go around the Minnewanka loop, where more times than not we'd run across mountain goats. Following that, head towards Lake Louise via 1A along the Bow Valley Parkway. There are many places to stop for pictures, most notably being the Castle Mountain lookout, and Morants' Curve - especially when there's a train about to go by. Well worth the stop.
Once at Lake Louise, check out the lake itself, then head up to Morraine Lake, a beautiful destination. Rent a canoe for an hour, but be careful you only take minimal gear in a splash-proof camera bag. Drive back down to Lake Louise and head up Hwy 93. There are numerous places for pictures, such as Hector Lake, Waterfoul Lakes, Mosquito Creek, Tangle Falls, Athabaska Falls, etc... all the way up to Jasper.
To take everything in I've described, you really need two days minimum - I've highlighted the main ones I've used for photo tours that usually just last one day. My usual sunset location is Vermillion Lakes, just outside Banff townsite. The view of Mount Rundle is classic, and you will no doubt run into other photographers, as it is a Rocky Mountain icon.
Cheerio...
Photographers salt lake city So, that's pretty well it. The other thing I take away with me is the many waterfall pictures shot all over western Canada, and the regret of not getting out more than I did. One can't find enough adjectives to describe this area with all its grandeur and majesty. I will miss it dearly, and will jump at any chance to come back for a visit. If you live here, you're very fortunate. Drive/hike/camp as much as you can, and take your camera with you. If you don't live in this area, then it is a must-see destination. Leave yourself as much time as possible - and if I may recommend - hire a local interpreter for the time you're out taking pictures; they will add a dimension to your experience you wouldn't have otherwise had.

Jasper and the Next Leg
Upon our arrival to Jasper we followed the directions of the young lady who dropped us off at the edge of town (right off the highway): follow the trail and that’ll take you into town.
We stretched our legs after the long drive from Lake Louise to Jasper and made the hike into town from the Trans-Canadian Highway. The first thing we did was walk under a train bridge (while a train was on it). It was loud.
We made our way into Jasper which, little did we know at the time, would become a comfortable week-long stay. I say comfortable in the sense that we had a nice tent to sleep in every night, but it was a bit... under the radar, so we had to pack up and take our things with us every day.
We spent days lazing around in the green spaces near the visitor’s center watching (and hearing) the trains go by --
Afternoons/evenings in the local brewing company and/or anyplace we found that served good beer at reasonable prices and had electric outlets --
We languished in the internet and Martin was able to catch a footy match (live!) on a really fucking big TV --
We ate some nachos, burgers, and generally had a good time.
We met a fellow bum who was travelling with two dogs: one big, one small. The big one was old, soft, and gentle. The little one was young, content, and just wanted a warm lap to sleep on. We exchanged words with him a few times, and on the third day we ended up drinking cider and whiskey in the green space near the visitors’ centre. The little dog fell asleep on my lap very promptly. I fell asleep not long afterward, and much talk of trainhopping, listening to Days n Daze, and more drinking commenced while I was taking a nap. A good night was had by all.
The next morning we woke up under our cozy blanket on the porch of the visitors’ centre, nudged by an employee telling us we had to move. I roused Martin and we transferred ourselves to another spot where we slept for another couple of hours (it was a bit wet so we got out the tarp). It was about there we realized the difference between “chilling in the park” and “being tragically homeless” is whether you have legitimate looking sleeping gear out or not. Blanket and backpacks: A-OK. Tarp and fluffy sleeping quilt: Doesn’t matter how much that ultralight shit cost you, you look homeless as hell fam.
We charged up all our shit in Jasper then headed up the Saturday Night Lake Loop to a backcountry campground on Minnow Lake.
Poorly named, it ended up; the lake had very limited fishing opportunity, almost none from the shore. We were at the reeds’ behest, which caused us to give up in frustration after no more than ten casts.
The weather was subpar the entire time (overcast, cold), I came down with a not-great cough (it hurt), and the trail/campground wasn’t very scenic (especially with the smoke pollution from the fires in BC; the air smelled like smoke if you sniffed, and the mountains weren’t even visible above the lake’s immediate treeline for days).
We met a Dutch guy who was very enthusiastic about going barefoot and plastic liquor bottles (he apparently had pretended to be Scottish while he was in Quebec) and a couple who had never backpacked to a campsite before who worked at an Apple store in Edmonton. They advised us that AlpineAire (a brand of dehydrated camping food) is likely to taste like cleaning chemicals. I’m honestly not surprised, and it makes me feel even better about our continually honed camping menu (instant mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, Knorr sides, fresh parmesan or other cheeses, semi-dried meat sticks, etc etc...) on both price point and flavor point.
We hiked back to Jasper after staying at Minnow awhile and, while it was all downhill, didn’t really spare our legs. Ends up prolonged downhill can also take a toll on calves. Who knew.
Once we got back to Jasper we stayed a night, to restock (re-drink), re-food, recharge (electronically and otherwise), then our last night in our precious homeless-camping spot to hit the road.
We hiked to the highway, West, or Ouest (French) as it told us, and attempted to position ourselves in a strategic spot for hitchhiking. I was afraid it was going to take awhile, since there wasn’t too much traffic going west in the first place and people were mostly either dayhiking or in campers.
Maybe just shy of a half an hour elapsed and a couple in a crossover stopped to pick us up; Martin asked if they were French “No”, then French-Canadian “No...” honestly, after so long listening to people in Canada speak French, most foreign languages that roll off the tongue sound French. It ended up the couple was Polish, and we were able to stick our packs in their “trunk”, and they were super, super, SUPER fucking nice.
And they were going to Vancouver!
We ended up hitchhiking with them the entire way from Jasper to Vancouver, AND they dropped us off at our Airbnb. Regardless of that, though, they were really great people. I’ll omit their names here, but the guy was a developer (living in Canada a couple of years) and the girl was ex-IT (she definitely knew some sort of programming and had quit her job in Poland to come to Canada). When we told them our story of not really being able to be in the same country and quitting our jobs to be together, they definitely had a bit of a chuckle. I just hope we entertained them enough. I really liked them and I hope I can repay them in the future somehow because the drive was...8...9? hours and that’s really incredible, honestly. And after all that, they dropped us off at our airbnb. The airbnb was an in-flight decision and reservation; the couple offered they could put us up if we didn’t find anywhere to sleep but they’d done so much already I couldn’t imagine asking that of them. We found a room we could hang out and shower and cook dinner (woo more Kraft(tm) Dinner(tm) as is Canadian ritual) for a reasonable price, so we went for it.
I guess that concludes this segment of our trip; we exchanged emails and numbers with the couple who gave us a lift, and I really hope to repay them (somehow!) in the future, if not before we leave the country in two weeks. From here it’ll be exploring the city and finding our way to Vancouver Island -- from there to hippie mecca Tofino, which I think should be easily enough found and unfound, based on the miles of dreadlocks we’ve encountered telling us how great Tofino is.
Unfortunately, but skillfully, our Canadian leg of 2017 is drawing to a close.

20170813 Beach episode Packed up, got out of dodge. All routine at this point, and headed out for the days drive. In the back seat Kate and I talked of many things. Star wars, remakes, Wallace and Grommet, Malcolm Reed, and then settled into a game of Bed Wed Behead (the nicer title to the same game you're thinking of, this blog is staying pg rated as much as I can help it) One person lists three characters, and the other reason picks who. Through would like to do what to. Suggestions were made such as: David Bowie, John Lenon and Elton John. Karl Marks, Charles Dickens and Charles Darwin. The Borg Collective, Agent Smith and the source consciousness of the matrix. And a bunch of other good ones :) most of today was driving but we did stop by a massive goose statue, and then by a lovely beach (still on the lake) where we slept for a while. I'm glossing over the lake beach here a little but it was great. Update on the shirts: the current design would cost like 40$ per shirt. I've redesigned it to try to make it black and white and/or single side, to bring the cost down (we voted later in the night and the next morning it was finalised as colour on the front and black and white on the back). So, we get to camp and unhitch the trailer and offload all the folks. Heather had to get groceries, Zoe Lauren and Elen wanted to get supplies and I wanted to get shavers to get rid of my ever engulfing stubble, so we all joined her on the two hour round trip to the nearest supermarket. We're skirting the north shore of Lake superior at the moment and it seems to be very dense forests and rocky Hills. The building of the trans Canada highway was a big deal here to connect some of the towns some way other than by boat. This was good time to catch up on some blog writing, chill out and spread out in a near empty van, listen to second hand gossip. Now Tim Horton is a chain of Canadian coffee shops which are like half Coffee and half bakery, and they're freaking everywhere. We grabbed some because "there is always time for Timmy's" Slang we Australians have taught the group: Bonza Wombat Eggs Benny Yeah nah Nah yeah Slang I've had to get used to: Pants = underpants for Brits, not trowsers. This makes it always when someone says "oh I can see your pants" and I would think to say "um, sure? That's fine?" The camp site was beautiful. Minus the mozzies it was perfect. Well, minus the mozzies and the overly pebbly beach it was perfect. But the sunset... That was nearly beyond compare. We ate dinner on the beach as the sun was setting. I ran back to wash my hands and go to the loo, swap my shows for sandals, then sprinted back to take photos of the sunset. Everyone had assembled for a group photo when I arrived, and I bolted to the line-up, skidding to a stop (skidded about a ft, pretty impressive I know). I'm going to try and get that photo for this blog entry because someone else took it, but afterwards taking self-esteem and photos, skipping stones, then after everyone had gone home, lying on the beach singing softly "Don't Ask Me Why" by Great Caesar, one of my favourite songs these days. Oh it was perfect. Heather delivered the briefing in a British accent while I handed about some cupcakes I'd bought at the shops. Then we did some light painting after dark using long exposure on our cameras. Will upload later.

How big is space?
Space is Big.
Really Big.
Okay, now that I’m done quoting Douglas Adams…
Let’s try an experiment. I don’t know where you’re from and whether you prefer American Football or Soccer, so let’s just say you have a football field (or pitch). At the very center of the football field, you put down a basketball. This is the sun. It’s actually a bit large for this scale (5.3 billion to 1) but it’ll do.
Now, assuming you have an average pace of about 2.5 feet, take 14 and a half paces towards the end zone/line.
At that point, take out a typical push pin. Stick it in the ground. That’s Mercury, just about to scale.
Take another 12 and a half paces away from the “sun”. Drop a standard BB on the ground. That’s Venus.
Now, take another 11 paces, if this is an American football field, you should be on about the 19-yard line, on a soccer field, just outside the 18-yard box, and drop another BB on the ground, preferably a blue one. That’s Earth. about 4 inches away from it, put another push pin in the ground. That’s the moon. That’s as far as any human being has gotten from the Earth.
Now, head to the end line. Walk about three paces past it. Stick another pin in the ground. That’s Mars.
That’s the inner Solar System.
Now, this is where most average people are already sitting down and having a stiff drink. But let’s say you have access to an even bigger open space…
To put down Jupiter, you have to walk another 151 paces, that’s nearly one and a half more football fields, dropping a few grains of sand to stand in for the asteroid belt. When you get there you can drop a golf ball to represent the “king of the planets.”
Another 160 paces past that, and you can drop a marble. That’s Saturn.
Now that we’re about four football fields away from our Sun, get ready for the real scale to kick in, because we have to walk another 358 paces, or about three more football fields, to get to Uranus. Maybe use a small marble for that? It’s sort of between common object sizes. It’s not small, but it’s no Saturn…
Finally, walk to a total distance of 1118 paces from our sun, that’s 405 paces past Uranus. Drop a lonely little small marble out here. You’ve made it to Neptune.
Congratulations. You’ve hiked over half a mile, about 2800 feet from the sun. Now, take another 80 paces away from the “sun”. Turn around, and take a picture.
That’s where Voyager 1 was when it took the “Family Portrait” on February 14, 1990, around 3 billion miles from Earth. (Actually, you’d have to be hovering well above the ground, because Voyager 1 is traveling “up” out of the plane of the solar system. Also, it was sort of to the side compared to the planets, rather than looking at them all as a string of dots straight away from it.)
Now. You may notice, that at this distance, you can’t even see the basketball, much less any of the planets. It really helps that stars “light up” to help us see them.
Now, turn around.
Start walking. Take 16,080,000 paces. Yeah, seriously. Take a brief break after you’ve gone about another 4000 paces. That’s where Voyager 1 is today. That’s the furthest that anything mankind has ever created has made it. Oh, and to put it in scale, as the fastest thing ever made by man, it took 40 years to get this far. You’re walking at a pace several times faster than the speed of light in our model.
Keep walking, you’ve still got 16,076,000 paces to go.
That’s a total of 3046.53 miles (about 4903 kilometers), so, if you started at the center of Aztec Stadium in San Diego, CA, you’ll need to go to just in front of the Nova Scotia Power Station on the Trans Canada Highway, just outside of Port Hastings, Nova Scotia. There, you can put down a tennis ball.
Congratulations, you’ve just reached our nearest neighbor star, Proxima Centauri. Of course, in space, there would be a lot less to see along the way.
A typical person could actually walk this in a little less than a year, without even trying too hard. In reality, the fastest spaceship we’ve ever sent to the stars (Voyager 1) would take around 80,000 years to make it to Proxima Centauri. And that’s if Proxima wasn’t also moving away from us at the moment, which it is.
Proxima Centauri is a little less than 4 light years away. That’s peanuts on the scale of space.
The Milky Way Galaxy (the one we live in) is 100,000 light-years across. That’s 25,000 times bigger.
And the Milky Way is just one of the billions of galaxies, and those are separated by distances where the numbers really get big.
I think I have to go back to Douglas Adams.
You just won’t believe how amazingly, unbelievably big it really is.

The Plumbing Tree by Medium Judith
Sylvan Oswald on The Plumbing Tree
The queer family has a gas leak. A character named Miasma, the voice of the gas itself, narrates its encroaching occupation of what might be an ordinary household. But for Medium Judith, the collaborative experimental theater “host” entity of Amanda Horowitz and Bully Fae Collins, this oddball clan is under siege from within. This is the exhausted American Family Play as civic debacle – the kind in which poisoned water contaminates entire towns, and even air in some public housing is not safe to breathe. The queer theater of Medium Judith, posits that the family play itself may be unfit for consumption.
Polarized politics play out among the queer spawn of Celetta (Flannery Silva) in her pregnant-Orthodox-Jewish-matriarch drag. When the gender nonconforming Yves (Christiane Oyen) proposes a “dragabond flag with “Islamic aesthetics” for the front lawn, his* sister Jodi, an androgynous nationalist in a pilgrim outfit (the subversively charming Julia Yerger), worries what the neighbors will think. As the argument ensues, the Homer Simpson-eque subletter Lars (Arne Gjelten) and neighbor Augustine (Elizabeth Sonenberg) weigh in. Jodi’s riposte is a shrine to female military veterans decoupaged onto a huge yellow ribbon. Yves fires back, planting his flag with such vigor that a pipe bursts, spewing septic ooze and vapors that put the family in a trance. “A character is best played in a less than conscious state,” intones Miasma as the existential front lawn drips with Shit. The Plumbing Tree is not just a battle over national/personal domestic politics, but over the soul of the well-made-play.
The latter may appear to be of less pressing urgency given our moment in history. However, the American Family Play has often functioned as a referendum on national shame. Whether the revelation is fraud, addiction, abuse, or beyond, our post-Freud playwrights have built structures that reveal the repressed. We can trace this from the likes of Arthur Miller and Lorraine Hansberry through newer plays like Paula Vogel’s And Baby Makes Seven (1993), Brandon Jacobs-Jenkins’s Appropriate (2013), Taylor Mac’s Hir (2014), and Jackie Sibblies-Drury’s Fairview (2018) (and many more – it’s a vast genre).
The Plumbing Tree critiques blind spots within the queer community, such as thinking of ourselves as part of “the solution,” to what ails society. If “perfection is for assholes,” as Taylor Mac says, then with our glorious deviance we hold a space of inclusion, acceptance, and process-as-constant. These are values queer folks ostensibly represent. Yet, Queer is no monolith. We cannot ignore that the white supremacy and institutional oppression that exist in society-at-large exist within our own communities – and our own non-profits as well. It’s all too easy to police the boundaries of otherness.
As the queer family onstage crawls over each other, out of their minds from Miasma’s attack, I saw one lost world inside another. But it didn’t feel like nostalgia. Medium Judith’s The Plumbing Tree ends with a rousing punk number. The cast wrinkles their noses, “and smells the audience as if they smell like shit.” We’re full of it. And it’s time to look it in the face.
*Medium Judith has informed me that the character Yves uses male pronouns while exploring transfemininity but does not yet formally identify that way.

Fiona Duncan on The Plumbing Tree
I suffer from claustrophobia in elevators, relationships, discourse, and media. The first act of The Plumbing Tree had right wing vlogging, trans and queer worship, uncouth men as the butt of jokes—hyper contemporary hot topics in the U.S. I was raised in Canada, and in the last 3 years, have come to appreciate how subtly different our nations are, as I witness my age and same ideals proclaiming peers here, in the States, mostly incapable so far, in their shares at least, of imagining true collective difference; their politics tend to be reactionary in content and form (loud, advertorial me meme forms), which is fair-ish re: content (the powers that be are powerful and awful! it's hard out here). But, what if: she who opposes force with counterforce reinforces that which she opposes and is formed by it. Anyway, I was happy when The Plumbing Tree devolved into collective shit, figuratively and figurally. Sewage burst from below the set of the house, like colonial, industrial, and patriarchal history is beyond haunting us now. The stage was brown and mucky and its character all got puke and mad sick from a stink indifferent to their differing identities and ideals.
I refuse to talk about shit with most anyone. I don’t find poo jokes funny. You should leave the room if you’re going to fart. It’s my one prudery; notorious, friends make fun of me for it. And yet I loved The Plumbing Tree’s shit brown metaphor and set, something about it not being just my shit, or your shit, or their shit, but so much shit, a world of shit, made it less cringeworthy, embarrassing, disgusting. This shit was even, refreshing.

Brian Getnick on The Plumbing Tree
For the last year and a half I’ve watched Amanda and Bully’s The Plumbing Tree grow at PAM, from an installation of sculptures and diagrams in the stairwell to public readings of the script and workshop productions of the play. At its recent debut at Highways Performance Space, The Plumbing Tree has blossomed and grown some very bitter fruit.
At Highways, the stage was littered with abstract brown assemblages, a quilted flag and an enormous yellow ribbon adorned with regiments of proud female soldiers. These objects are sculptures that pose as props. They don’t sit meekly in service of the plays narrative; their surfaces are worked with detailed, micro narratives of their own. And, because their material processes are explicit, they also function as psychological prosthetics of the characters that made them. The flag is meticulously quilted by non binary-artist Yves, the soldier ladies are crudely rendered in local color by Jodi, the neocon daughter.
I understood the cartoonishly frenzied energy of the performers as a way to grapple with the fact that the characters they played are more or less composites of ideological signs and symbols that Amanda and Bully have poetically strung together as a script. If one mistakes their competitions, attacks, and craft making with the complexity and paradoxical nature of being it is because we, in our daily rhythmic interface with social media, resemble them.
For instance, the mother, Celetta, wants only the signs and none of the burdens of motherhood: an engorged but hollow belly. Her children appeal to her dreamily as floating potentialities of her creative powers. Celetta: “I saw my children before they were born and they were smoke. And they could be anything.” Celetta resents that her actual children have abandoned their post inside the belly and are beside her warring for attention. In Act III, she pantomimes the agonies of birth to regain it.
When the language in The Plumbing Tree makes a shift away from parody and into a nearly autonomous materiality the characters release word torrents reminiscent of Asher Hartman and Reza Abdoh. This became most evident in the character Jodi, the Pilgrim hatted conservative. The polemics she espouses read like an Antifa passion play. Jodi: “Knock knock, who’s there?, Socialism, Socialism who? Socialism is a failed a system Shame on you America!” Then: “Fuck your faggot prophets. Here my hate has stewed me through. Prosper porridge, pungent forest sow and owl fertilize. Taste my musket, piggy squalor, measles mumps disease deceased repeat repent release your lands and logs in rolling throngs.” The language invites ecstatic interpretation, a song, a scream. It bursts through a parody of conservative rants and goes down, flung from Jodi’s mouth, into a witch’s cauldron.
In the third act, the performers crawl, they attack, they sing and dance, they blow a cluster of rape whistles and begin a chant. I remembered this line: “An object named is a fish out of water” It seemed to point to what the authors want and don’t want from writing for theater. I spoke with Amanda about this sentence and her answer was (I paraphrase here): that to name a thing is to isolate it from the force that gives the thing movement, agency, breath, and life. But these artists don’t write in a breath of fresh air; it’s a gamey fart that erupts when a flag is staked in the yard breaking open a subterranean sewer. At this rupture, the voice of the fumes bellows forth and the inhabitants that have piled out of the house indulge in a collective hallucination. The shit smell is named Miasma: all powerful language unleashed from the body.

Fragmented bus service market emerges as Greyhound exits Western Canada Oct. 31
CALGARY — A hodge-podge of public transportation services are already starting to fill the gap as Greyhound Canada moves steadily towards its midnight Halloween disappearance from most of Western Canada.
The venerable national motor coach operator is being replaced by a mix of provincial government-subsidized services, Indigenous-owned bus lines, locally owned startups, flexible fleets of shuttle buses and a scattering of formal and informal ride-sharing services.
And passengers aren’t waiting for the last Greyhound next Wednesday to check out new options — according to Stuart Kendrick, senior vice-president of Greyhound Canada, ticket sales have already fallen off to the point that some route frequencies are being reduced.
“Demand is quite low as we run into this last week or 10 days,” he said in a recent interview.
“You’ve got single-digit riderships on the schedule that we have left throughout Western Canada, so that’s probably about a 50 or 60 or 70 per cent decline based on what corridor you look at.”
The company plans to stop selling tickets on long-distance routes a few days before the buses stop running to help ensure passengers aren’t left stranded and holding the unused half of a two-way ticket, Kendrick said.
The loss of Greyhound spells opportunity for Regina-based Rider Express, a company that began operating a handful of 15-passenger minibuses on inner-provincial routes shortly after government-owned Saskatchewan Transportation Company shut down its bus services in the spring of 2017.
Rider has acquired five full-sized 50-seat buses and plans to begin passenger service on a Vancouver-Calgary-Winnipeg route on the Trans-Canada Highway this week, followed in November by a Highway 16 route linking Edmonton and Saskatoon, said manager Shauna Hardy. Both routes will directly replace Greyhound routes.
The interest from Saskatchewan residents has been “overwhelming,” she said, adding the company is being asked to take on more routes but has so far declined.
Late last May, Calgary-based Pacific Western Transportation was hired by the province of British Columbia to operate its BC Bus North service after Greyhound cancelled service to communities including Prince Rupert and Dawson Creek.
Greyhound’s announcement in July that it would exit almost all of Western Canada convinced the company to offer its own inter-city services in B.C. for the first time, said John Stepovy, director of business development. He added the company is also expanding its Alberta offerings.
He said he thinks his company can provide the hub in a hub-and-spoke business model as Greyhound closes — it’s already in discussions with operators of small-scale shuttle bus and transit operators about establishing connections with his firm’s routes.
“Overall, long-term, where the needs are, where there’s demand, we would anticipate voids will be filled but it could take a little bit of time for those things to shake out once the landscape changes,” Stepovy said.
“Discount airlines coming in will probably take on some of that longer-haul (Greyhound demand),” he said. “For bus travel, That one-to-five/six-hour travel time is kind of in the sweet spot.”
He added “disruptors” — new travel options such as Poparide, an app that matches passengers with drivers who happen to be going to the same destinations — are also expected to fill the gap.
Indigenous-owned charter service Kelsey Bus Lines is being renamed Mahihkan Bus Lines and has announced plans to offer daily passenger routes from Thompson and Flin Flon in northern Manitoba to Winnipeg, as well as freight service.
In Alberta, the provincial government has launched pilot programs at a cost of $2.8 million to help five rural municipalities start inter-city bus services. One, centred on Camrose, about 100 kilometres south of Edmonton, has already started and the others are expected to begin over the next three months.
The fragmented inter-city transportation model that is emerging can be a positive change, said Barry Prentice, professor of transportation economics at the University of Manitoba’s Asper School of Business.
Greyhound likely failed in Western Canada in part because its costs were too high and it lacked the flexibility to respond to changing markets because it carried freight as well as passengers, he said.
“As long as they were in the market, it was hard for anyone else to come in. Now that they’re gone, it creates an opportunity,” he said.
Most new services are planning to pick up and drop off passengers at hotels, gas stations or tourist information centres. Prentice said that means they won’t be burdened with the costly terminal network Greyhound had to maintain.
Kendrick said shutting down all routes from northern Ontario to the West Coast involves a “significant cost’ to Greyhound Canada.
He said it’s expected to take several months to sublet its leased real estate and sell its few owned facilities, which include maintenance shops in centres such as Edmonton, Red Deer, Prince Rupert, Prince George and Winnipeg.
The company is laying off about 420 employees. It will move 70 or 80 of its 110 western buses to its ongoing operations in Eastern Canada and sell or scrap the rest.
A Seattle-Vancouver route operated by Greyhound U.S. will continue to use a Vancouver terminal leased by the Canadian arm. Kendrick said the company plans to ask other bus companies to come in as tenants to fill unused capacity there.

Maternity related services considered inpatient for insurance?
"Maternity related services considered inpatient for insurance?
Most individual plans (87%) do not offer maternity coverage. I was fortunate enough to still be covered under an old employer by paying COBRA, and a majority of my expenses were covered. I had twins and had to have a C-Section. So now that I know I'm most likely to have a C-Section again, and who knows, another set of twins! (complete surprise) and am still of child bearing age. I am now under an individual plan, that does not offer maternity coverage. I was reading under the 'Inpatient' services and it listed this: Unlimited coverage is provided for medically necessary physician and surgeon services

Can auto insurance carrier deny claim due to their insured simply ignoring request for signed affidavit ?
Hi Have a question. My rear bumper was lightly tapped by 17 year old new driver. Damage is minor and cosmetic at $425. My car is only three years old and in perfect condition. The insured provided me all his insurance information and said to file a claim through his dad's insurance carrier. I called local police department 911 line to report minor collision. Officer responded and insured admitted to police officer that he tapped rear bumper. Police officer looked at my rear bumper and refused to make a police report as he said cannot issue a report unless damage is over $1500. I begged the officer repeatedly to please provide me even an incident report or something official like an affidavit as the teenager admitted to officer that he hit my rear bumper. Police Officer simply drove off and left me on the side of the road with a stranger. Of course now four weeks later, the insured and his father have simply ignored phone calls, emails and registered mail attempts by his insurance carrier to verify version. (not sure what version would be needed as my black paint is on his front bumper) I called the insured and his dad hung up on me twice. The insurance carrier told me they are denying and closing out the claim due to insured not responding. They said this is totally legal under Illinois State laws. (basically too bad, so sad) By the way this insurance company has unacceptable rating with state insurance board and BBB. I paid a body shop $425 in cash to fix car yesterday. Do I have recourse as I see my options would be to file a complaint with Illinois Banking and Insurance or file a small claims lawsuit against insured and insurance carrier (but that is an additional $119 court filing fee) Any ideas would be appreciated.""

Health insurance rates. Switch or stay?
In the past 2 years my family's health care plan (which is offered through my husband's work) has gone from great to way too expensive. We pay 250 a month as a premium, then we have a 1,000 each deductible, then our copays kick in 25 for office visit, 35 for specialty, 100 emergency room visit (must be okayed by dr. first, or they don't pay anything), 100 each day in the hospital. Perscription copays are 25/30/50, and not all things are covered. Two years ago we paid 275/a month and had 20 copays for everything (except hospital stays were always 100 and perscriptions they were 5/10/20). They do not pay for any vision, dental, or contraceptive. Certain (most) perscriptions are not covered. Is this similar to what everyone is paying, or should we start looking outside of his work for insurance?""

My auto insurance raised twice as much for not being insured for more then 30-days?
I had auto insurance with state farm and my policy was $180 (just liablilty)per month for 12 months. I ran into some issues with money and could not pay so I cancelled the policy and avoided driving for a little over a month. I recently went to another agency to find a cheaper insurance and they said since i had a registered vehicle that was uninsured for more than 30 days, there is a penalty. Now I pay $340 for 8 months (just liablilty). 3 agency's told me the same thing. My question is will this ever change? How long will I have this penalty ? Where can I get private health insurance?

I know several people who are alcoholics who have an HMO through their retirement and they are in the hospital every other month, simply because they have over drank. They run to the doctor every two months for very trivial things/ I know of several who abuse the veterans hospital from runny noses to a simple headache, plus they are paid monthly for a disabilty they don't have. They just don't want to work. I think married couples should only be able to use one insurance policy, and these others should be only allowed to go to the doctor a few times a year. i'm 17 and was wondering if a mini cooper would be a good first car. i never really wanted one, my one of my friends is like obsessed with them and since then i've been looking into it. i know they have 5 star safety rating so they're very safe and easy to control and can fit into small parking spaces because, well, they're small =) But how about insurance? Is that cheap? I mean if i'm getting a used one? Not a sporty model or anything. And what about maintenance? And is it fuel-friendly? Or would it be like driving a hummer? Considering what I've seen and read about it, it can either be really expensive if you buy the wrong model and the new car, OR it can be very effecient and affordable if you buy a used one and the right model. Can you help me out here? Thanks =)""

Do you need to be enrolled in school to stay covered under your parents health insurance? Affordable Care Act?
So here's the question in case you don't want to read my wall of text below (but it would be appreciated if you did to further understand my question). I was covered under my moms health insurance while in college and I was told I needed to be enrolled in school to stay covered, I dropped out a while ago and was wondering if I am still covered by law under the Affordable Care Act since I am only 19. I was covered under my mothers health insurance, she works for a private company and she said that I needed to be enrolled in school in order to stay covered by the insurance. But this was close to a year ago if I'm remembering correctly. The reason I'm worried is because I'm taking a break from college, and have had multiple doctor appointments/tests done after I left, but I never had a problem with the insurance going through. I've made myself paranoid into thinking that the company may just not know, and is assuming I'm still in school and will randomly hit me with the costs of the testings and doctor visits if they saw I was not in school, or god forbid somewhere down the road my mother or I are in a serious accident and are dropped because of this. I know this happens all the time, the insurance agencies have people hired to find abnormalities in your history in an attempt to drop you and not have to pay the bills. So would I still be covered under my mothers health insurance even though I'm not currently enrolled in school under the Affordable Care Act? Once again I am 19 also. Thank you""

My car insurance and my driver license will be suspended?
Here is my story . Don't be harsh to me because I know my driving is bad I have been driving with this car for 7 months. I paid premium coverage. I did hit a divider myself and then I claimed my insurance in order to get my car repaired ( this time cost like $3000) After that 3 months, I hit a car in a parking lot. Another driver claimed my insurance and the insurance company paid them $600 to fix their car. After that 2 months, I again hit another car in the parking lot. I renewed my insurance in Jan. Before I paid $800 for 6 months, this time I paid $1900 for 1 year policy. Yesterday , I really hit another car on the road. I claimed my insurance again because the other driver's car really bad and I don't think I can pay off. My questions are : Should I pay deductible in order to get my car repaired because my car bad too and the body shop said It would cost 1k to 1.5k( because of the old damage) Will my license get suspended? Does this letter help explain why insurance is expensive?
This is a letter from Anthem to Sec. Sebelius back on February 11th, almost a month ago. It explains why insurance in California is high and what factors have led to the increase. It seems pretty clear to me and yet the President claims that he has asked for and has yet to receive a cogent response from the insurance company for this increase. Seems pretty cogent to me. Maybe the President is just a slow learner or the fact that he doesn't have any education or experience in business or economics make the concepts difficult for him to grasp. http://www.wellpoint.com/pdf/SebeliusLetter02112010.pdf Notice that they mention that their rates are less than the 'not for profits' and that much of their increase is the result of Medicare patients needing supplementary insurance because Medicare won't cover them. Notice, too, that the cost of insurance is directly associated with the cost of health care. You can't reduce the cost of insurance without reducing the cost of health care. Obama's initiative does nothing to reduce the cost of CARE. Wonder why that is. Could there be an ulterior motive? So what do you think? Do you have any questions? And please don't waste our time. Read the thing before you respond.""

The problem is I will in fact have had two year no claims on 31/07/08 which Virgin recognises, however when I go on their and any other online car insurers websites it says that my no claims (2 years) cannot exceed my full license period (1 year 9 months) So the question is, will my car insurance be recognised by other insurers as been held for two years?""

I was in an auto accident without insurance. What am I facing?
I was in a car accident yesterday. I live in California. I had no insurance at the time, although I was unaware that my girlfriend had not sent in my quarterly paryment and was actually driving without insurance for almost 3 months. The day after the accident I went in to the Highway Patrol's office and spoke to the officer who took the report and informed him I discovered I had no insurance. He didnt seem all that concerned and thanked me for going in. As for the accidnet itself, I belief I will be found at fault as I did not brake in time and rear end a small car who in turn hit the car infront of her. I was traveling at about 30 mph when I started to brake and I heard the firefighter at the seen tell the chp he thought it was 25-30 mph. If anyone could tell me what I am facing legally and finacially. I read online I will automatically have a one year driver's license suspension. Is this accurate and is this all? WIll I ge a ticked or fine? I would also like for someone to rule out jail time. The driver immediately infront of me had good damage to the back of her car and was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Her daughter called me the day after the accident and told me she was at her house but wanted her car fixed soon because she wanted to return home in another state. I suggested she call her own insurance and let them know I was inot insured. THe other driver in front and her passenger were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries and their car had minor damage when I looked at it at the time of the accident. I have not heard from them. Financially can anyone tell me what I am facing? I understand I will be responsible, but I also understand that the other parties' insurances will have to cover their own drivers. If so will I simply be responsible for their deductable. I am more concerned with the legal aspects than the financial. I am an single father of three and need to be there for my kids. Thank you to whoever can help!""

Space is big. Really big. Okay, now that I’m done quoting Douglas Adams… Let’s try an experiment. I don’t know where you’re from and whether you prefer American football or soccer, so let’s just say you have a football field (or pitch). At the very center of the football field, you put down a basketball. This is the sun. It’s actually a bit large for this scale (5.3 billion to 1) but it’ll do. Now, assuming you have an average pace of about 2.5 feet, take 14 and half paces towards the end zone/line. At that point, take out a typical push pin. Stick it in the ground. That’s Mercury, just about to scale. Take another 12 and a half paces away from the “sun”. Drop a standard BB on the ground. That’s Venus. Now, take another 11 paces, if this is an American football field, you should be on about the 19 yard line, on a soccer field, just outside the 18 yard box, and drop another BB on the ground, preferably a blue one. But let’s say you have access to an even bigger open space… To put down Jupiter, you have to walk another 151 paces, that’s nearly one and a half more football fields, dropping a few grains of sand to stand in for the asteroid belt. When you get there you can drop a golf ball to represent the “king of the planets.” Another 160 paces past that, and you can drop a marble. That’s Saturn. Now that we’re about four football fields away from our Sun, get ready for the real scale to kick in, because we have to walk another 358 paces, or about three more football fields, to get to Uranus. Maybe use a small marble for that? It’s sort of between common object sizes. It’s not small, but it’s no Saturn… Finally, walk to a total distance of 1118 paces from our sun, that’s 405 paces past Uranus. Also it was sort of to the side compared to the planets, rather than looking at them all as a string of dots straight away from it.) Now. The Milky Way Galaxy (the one we live in) is 100,000 light years across. That’s 25,000 times bigger. And the Milky Way is just one of billions of galaxies, and those are separated by distances where the numbers really get big. I think I have to go back to Douglas Adams. You just won’t believe how amazingly, unbelievably big it really is.

He added “disruptors” — new travel options such as Poparides, an app that matches passengers with drivers who happen to be going to the same destinations — are also expected to fill the gap.

‘Feel cut off:’ Loss of Greyhound bus service leaves few options in rural areas
Mohammed Idriss says the small city of Brooks in southern Alberta will get more isolated when Greyhound bus service ends across Western Canada in the fall.
Greyhound has announced it will end all its routes in the West, save for one between Vancouver and Seattle, at the end of October.
Brooks, with a population of about 14,450 is on the Trans-Canada Highway, but it’s 190 kilometres to Calgary toward the west and 110 kilometres to Medicine Hat in the east.
“We already feel cut off to a degree because of the availability of some services in the big city only,” said Idriss, manager of Brooks and County Immigration Services.
A large population of newcomers to Canada work in Brooks, about 90 per cent of them at a beef-processing facility owned by JBS Canada.
Idriss estimates about 1,000 people moved to the community to work and many find getting out of town difficult.
“There are people who have vehicles, but are not that comfortable going into a big city with their own vehicle, and they would just prefer taking public transportation,” he said.
“I can’t give a good estimate of how big the impact will be, but we’re going to hear more once people start realizing there is no service any more.”
Brooks Mayor Barry Morishita is disappointed with Greyhound’s decision.
“I was on a Greyhound last night coming back from Calgary. It’s funny I was on one the day the news came out.
“It’s going to have an impact on a number of people.”
The loss of Greyhound is also a concern to Canada’s largest reserve. The sprawling Blood Indian Reserve in southwestern Alberta is home to 12,500 residents.
Band spokesman Rick Tailfeathers said service has been going downhill since Greyhound stopped service to Fort Macleod, just 30 kilometres away.
He said only about half of the band’s members own cars.
“The good thing about (Greyhound) was people could afford a bus ticket,” he said. “Now people are going to have to find another way to travel.”
In the north, bus service is relied on by many Indigenous people who travel to bigger cities for medical care.
“It is already well documented that our citizens have to ride the bus for hours, some longer than 14 hours, in order to see a doctor. How will they get access to adequate health care now?” said Grand Chief Arlen Dumas of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs.
There were previous Greyhound cuts, such as in 2012, when the bus company stopped operating on a number of roads including Highway 2 in Manitoba.
Rick Chrest, the mayor of Brandon, Man., said it’s a blow for people who don’t own vehicles because there is no rail service in many areas and access to passenger airlines is limited.
Chrest is hopeful smaller private operators will step in, but that didn’t happen after the 2012 cuts.
“This will take away yet another option for public transportation that certainly many people rely on,” Chrest said.
“We might be hopeful that some other aspect of the private sector may start stepping up and filling the void.”
Chrest pointed to a private firm that offers a shuttle bus that carries Brandon residents two hours east to the airport in Winnipeg. Brandon has an airport, but the only major scheduled service is a daily WestJet run to Calgary.
Bus charter companies, which transport sports teams, might also find a niche in regular scheduled service, he suggested.
Ontario-based Kasper Transportation, which provides service to Northwest Ontario and Manitoba, announced expansion plans Tuesday.
In a Facebook post, it said it will be offering service from Winnipeg to Thunder Bay, Ont., Thompson, Man., Regina, Saskatoon and Prince Albert, Sask., starting Oct. 31 — the day Greyhound shuts down its western operation.
Greyhound currently services small communities across the sparsely populated Prairies. There are 46 stops alone during the 19-hour run from Winnipeg to Calgary — places such as MacGregor, Man., Sintaluta, Sask. and Bassano, Alta.
