Never have you heard me romanticizing cinema. Cinema, for me, is a weapon. Any filmmaker who wants to go into filmmaking in this white supremacist industry is declaring war. The funny part is that Black people declare war by wanting to be a filmmaker and then play flimsy with that war.

“The first revolution I waged was against my own colonization. Tarzan movies, John Wayne movies. So I made a film called ‘The Death of Tarzan.’ To begin to liberate myself, I had to kill Tarzan in my head.” - Haile Gerima.

I found 2 pivotal @GWGSEHD papers while clearing out some old files. The Pedagogy of the Oppressed and Transformational Learning within the American Struggle for Black Liberation (August 2003) The Impact of Dialogue, Emotions, Awareness and Critical Reflection on Perspective Transformation: How can I be different to create a wholesome space for transformational learning in organizations? (Summer 2004) It's wild reading how much has changed - and how much hasn't changed one bit- in my understanding and approach to #truth & #healing within the lifecycle of human growth and development - pointed specifically toward #equity for the descendants of #enslaved African-Americans. I'm quoting names like #FrederickDouglass #BookerTWashington #RenitaWeems #bellhooks #HaileGerima #PauloFreire #DalaiLama #DanielGoleman, some of my favorite #leadership models & another colleague from The ASTD DC Metro chapter that I haven't seen in forever. There's tons I would change, particularly in my conclusions about #blackliberation & the cursory nod to #ListenToBlackWomen. I also know more about my own #familyhistory & the impact these systemic inequities have had on my own life. That said, I'm extremely proud of the way I was clearly struggling to propose meaningful solutions. Just because a paper is due, doesn't mean it's finished. We're now using terms like #Mindfulness & #RaceEquity but the grounded concepts & effective methods behind the terms aren't new. Healing is & will always be needed at internal, interpersonal & institutional levels & I've evolved my languaging of where the responsibility lies. White supremacy is a disEase that must be cured if any of us are to find #Peace. I've very clearly reframed the root causes to be systemic miseducation & #fear, instead of attempting to simply address the symptoms that appear downstream in black people's access & social outcomes. This passion (ok ok fine. This obsession) drew me to help stand up the #civicadvocacy training program in 2005 #Parents4RaceEquity. It also led me to search out & earn an #ICF accredited coaching certification in 2008 for my approach to SoulPowerCoach.com So what's YOUR life's work? https://www.instagram.com/p/BqnN9gzBXal/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=pgwk8sh9au1p

Congrats to #BradfordYoung for his historymaking #DP #oscar nomination He is also a #howarduniversity alum. I remember our talks on campus in undergrad..He was so focused and driven. I have not seen him since that time and am not at all surprised by his success. From #selma to #arrival and the next #starwars movie. It's crazy that he's a pioneer in #2017 another student of the legendary #hailegerima

(via Bush Mamas: A Black Film Gives Birth to Sociohorror)
Professor, Writer and Director Haile Gerima’s 1975 student thesis film Bush Mama premiered on the independent and student film circuit a year before I was born. I was born in the small-town Midwest: Kankakee, Illinois, a town most people have not heard of and can barely pronounce when they do. Once I was born, I was sheltered within a small-town American context where segregated, working class Blacks had license to freely indict country “honkies” for their devilish ways and country “niggers” for their shiftlessness. The worst thing was to attack or judge others who could be lower, to not work a job but to take handouts, or to leave your children behind. These were all equal sins.
To be a poor Black woman with children was not necessarily in equal category.
