Many-Coated Mayhem #1
(or, how many different fucking coats does Wu Xie own?)
So we all liked Tibetan Sea Flower, I know we did, but DID YOU ALL PROPERLY ENJOY THE MANY COATS IN THIS SHOW?
Because I sure did. When Wu Xie wore 6 different coats in the first 4 episodes I'm afraid it did something to my brain, and the result was me cataloguing every coat the man wears in all 32 episodes of this show. (Discounting his baby self in episode 1 I guess, bc I was lazy.) I'm afraid I have missed many an important piece of dialogue because I was too distracted squealing over a new coat appearance.
Honestly with how the show started I expected the final count (18) to be higher, but I guess that's what happens when your MC spends three quarters of the show in the same underground spaces. (Wu Xie at least had the good sense to not bring any unneeded extra coats on those trips. Good for him.)
If nothing else, this coat counting adventure once more provides proof for Wu Xie's love of layering the fuck up, which, in the climate most of this show is set in, is actually a smart decision.
Anyway, I counted all the coats, and now you have to deal with it. Note that I watched the show at 720p, so my screenshots are... functional at best.
Coats 1 & 2
This is a set comprised of a sand-coloured/light brown (depending on the lighting and colouring of the episode) overcoat + a fleece undercoat/hoodie type situation. He wears this when he goes to Dejia in episode 2.
This is a nice set to start with. The overcoat has many pockets and a hood with one of those little flaps to keep the rain out of your face. The fleece undercoat has a zipper that only goes half the way down, which may lead some of you to ask "but Eru, is that still a coat?" And yes. Yes it is to me. I have suffered too long at the hands of the popular rich kids in school wearing their Napapijri coats that only zip half the way down to not call this one a coat too.
This set is in fact so nice that Wu Xie decides to wear it again in episode 31, when he and Pangzi go back to the Spiritual Retreat.
This makes it it the only coat set that is worn twice! (Discounting, I guess, technically, number 12, but we'll get to that.)
Also a shot where he only wears the undercoat, so you can properly appreciate it:
I like this bit of coat continuity. The outfit Wu Xie starts this adventure in is also the one in which he ends it. ✨symbolism✨
Coats 3 & 4
This is a set made for colder climates, which at the time I thought made sense for the trip to Mosang and the Retreat in episode 2, until Wu Xie decided to wear coats 1 & 2 there as well in episode 31... Ah well... This set is comprised of a nice brown undercoat and a very fetching long blue wintery overcoat.
The overcoat is puffy but functional and comfortable. It is a dark blue on the outside, but the lining on the inside is green. Here's a shot for you to properly appreciate the blue colour though:
Isn't that gorgeous? Especially in contrast with his sand-coloured backpack. In hindsight I could've probably counted those too, because he uses at least 3 different ones that I can remember over the course of this show.
The brown undercoat is nice too. it has a collar that can be zipped up pretty high for extra insulation, and some (what I assume to be) velcro straps to tighten the sleeves around the wrists.
This is probably my favourite set of coats he wears in the entire show, which is a crying shame because after Zhang Haike kills him in it in episode 3 (or does he?) he never wears it again.
Coats 5 & 6
I don't know if Wu Xie's entire backpack for trips like these is just filled to the brim with coats, or if he gets Wang Meng to send him more coats by mail whenever he decides he wants a different one... Honestly, neither is a reassuring answer. Poor backpack. Poor Wang Meng. Wu Xie, please don't forget to bring a water bottle on your tomb adventures.
Anyway, coats 5 and 6 form the set Wu Xie changes into after the whole fiasco with the heads and the not-actually-dying in episode 4. It's comprised of a blue and grey undercoat that he starts out wearing on its own but is later supplemented with a thiqq puffy green-ish grey wintercoat.
As you can see, the undercoat has zippers in various places that I am not entirely sure are practical places for pockets.
The overcoat he wears for the first time during the bug hallucination sequence in episode 6, and I was briefly convinced that coat itself was a hallicination too that died a valiant death in the battle against the bugs, but then it showed up again afterwards.
Not visible in these shots is that it is a relatively short wintercoat that only about reaches down to his hips. Regardless, it must be soft in its floofiness, because clearly Pangzi likes to pet it (and his boyfriend who is wearing it.)
Coat 7
This is a white coat that is such pristine white Xiao Hua could've worn it. Underneath it he wears a funky little hoodie that I really can't get away with calling an undercoat, because it just isn't. It's a hoodie.
Wu Xie changes into this white coat halfway through the meeting with the Zhang siblings and Feng and his crew of mercenaries in episode 7, for no apparent reason. Maybe he senses that they will be leaving soon and decides he wants to be cold in the meantime.
He wears this coat during his and Pangzi's daring not-escape attempt, and then at the Zhang's base of operations in Dejia in episode 10 and onwards. (Sorry imaginary Xiaoge I almost cropped you out there. You have a nice coat too, but neither of you can beat Pangzi's coat above. He is the coat king.)
This coat has a layer of soft grey lining that confused me for a little while. At first I couldn't quite tell whether it was a separate piece of clothing or just part of the coat, but I think it's the second.
According to this screenshow from episode 21, this coat is apparently from a Korean brand called Kolon Sports.
...Do with that information what you want.
Coat 8
This is a simple black raincoat that appears in episode 9.
Wu Xie has apparently brought this coat all the way up the mountain in his backpack with the single purpose of exchanging it for Xiaoge's coat on the statue that he couldn't have known would be there... He has never worn it in this show. No one will wear it ever again.
Coats 9 & 10
This is the set he wears for the entirety of the Nilaisi tomb adventure starting in episode 11. It's comprised of a denim undercoat/hoodie thingy and a sand-coloured weirdly textured overcoat that I can't believe actually looks good on him.
The undercoat only zips (or velcros?) part of the way down, and he never closes the overcoat for what I assume to be fashion reasons. In a tomb. This entire outfit was very fashion-over-function, what with the black chunky sneakers he wears in place of a good old pair of hiking boots. IN A TOMB.
Coat 11
This is the simple blue-ish raincoat Wu Xie wears to party with the Zhangs in their Dejia HQ in episode 17.
This coat has reflective strips on the sleeves, and he wears it over a gorgeous blue knit jumper. He promptly gets stabbed in this outfit, so we never see either of these clothing items again, and for all that it's a nice coat that I would've liked to borrow from him, it's probably better that he never wears it again, because he also has the most intense mental breakdown in it that any on screen Wu Xie has ever had:
I still can't believe they actually got away with filming the thing that comes after this shot.
Anyway, this scene paves the way for some more ✨symbolism✨in the form of:
Coat 12
Xiaoge's coat. The one Wu Xie nabbed off the statue. We never get shown how that coat ended up draped over the statue, but I assume Xiaoge must've left it there at some point, for some reason. (Did he have a Wang Meng to air-mail him a different coat afterwards too? Probably not. He must've been cold on the hike back down the mountain.)
This is the point at which I realized my coat obsession just became plot-relevant and consequently went even more nuts about it.
It's a very simple blue raincoat that fits him decently, for all that he and Xiaoge probably should've worn different sizes. The sleeves are a bit short on him maybe, which amuses me. Wu Xie truly out there living up to his most lanky boy potential! <333
For some reason it's a different coat than the one imaginary Xiaoge wore in episode 10, because that would have been too much symbolism I guess. But I gotta give NPSS credit for actually setting this up and following through on it. Kudos for achieveing a writer's bare minimum!
Coat 13
This is the long grey wintercoat Wu Xie wears from episode 21 onwards, when they go up the snowy mountain to the Yinshaluo shrine, the Second Bronze Door and the Zanghai Flower field.
It's floofy and nice and just alround a good wintercoat, and he wears this lovely warm jumper underneath it.
Oh yeah, what else did episode 21 teach us? Keep you plot-relevant coats on!
Coats 14 & 15
I'm putting these together because they are not coats in the stictest sense, but, as my good friend @programmedradly put it: "It keeps him warm and looks very fetching." These are the nice blue robes he is given by the Yinshaluo people after they save him and the others from the storm in episode 28 and 29.
The first set is a lighter blue with a brown belt and some nice floof along the bottom. (Note also Feng sitting there like the high fashion model (and apparently horse whisperer) he is.)
Meanwhile the second set is more of a warrior get-up. It's a darker blue with extra layers and protective parts at the elbows and shoulders.
I take it back, this is my favourite "coat" he wears in the show. It's beautiful and he looks great in it and it's probably the reason he doesn't die from grenade-blast-to-the-face #363 so yay!
Coat 16
The black raincoat he wears when he and Pangzi go to pick up Xiaoge from horrifically traumatic monster daycare or whatever I don't know the lore the Bronze Door in episode 32.
He wears a grey hoodie underneath it, and some sort of tactical vest over it that might just be part of the coat. Fashion!
Maybe the fashion is why he and Pangzi forgot to take their backpacks with them when they dramatically walked off towards the outside world with Xiaoge at the end of this scene.
Coat 17
Coat 17 I'm not entirely sure is a coat but i'm counting it anyway. It looks like a shirt but it's more of a jacket. The fabric is thicker than a shirt would be anyway. He wears this when the Iron Triangle arrive in Yucun in episode 32.
I'm counting this one mostly to have an excuse to show you Wu Xie's ridiculous pants. Is that black (faux) leather???? Silly man.
Coat 18
The last one! It's this little wispy thin raincoat thingy he wears when Xiaoge asks him and Pangzi to go for a hike in the mountains around Yucun in episode 32. I had a different screenshot of it that was taken two seconds before this one when Xiaoge was still in the frame, but I thought his pretty face would be too distracting, and this is a coat post after all!
Now I hear you thinking "but Eru how is this one a coat and not just a shirt?" Well you see, when you look at it closely you can tell that there's elastic in the hem at the bottom, with one of those little plastic nodules that can be used to tighten it, and the fabric is a little shiny. Classic rain coat features! (Even though it doesn't have a hood, so it's also a classic case of fashion over function, but we're used to that with Wu Xie occasionally. Looking at you there, chunky sneakers he wears in the Nilaise tomb...)
Anyway, if you've made it this far I applaud you! That's all the coats adult Wu Xie wears in Tibetan Sea Flower... or is it?
You may have noticed this post is is numbered #1... Alas I cannot put more screenshots in this post, so stay stuned for a second Coat Post!!
If you're wondering how I'm still sane after watching this show through this lens instead of literally any other one. I am in fact not.

HAIK(YUU)!!!
Info:
A twisted wonderland x Haikyuu crossover with a bit of a twist!
Warnings for the Series Idea:
Female reader intended, limited volleyball knowledge (I haven’t played for a few years), bad writing, and ooc characters (I believe). I don’t know if someone has already done this but if they have please let me know!
Volleyball.
A sport everyone has a least heard about if you’ve got access to electronics. The very same sport that you’ve been playing since you were twelve years old. And the very same sport that made you want to go to this god forsaken school.
“I’m sorry but, we’re not able to take any more members at this time.”
What.
Your head immediately snapped up to look at the girl’s volleyball team’s captain, a look of disbelief on your face. “What..?” Mei sighed, “sorry freshy, but the team’s gonna be disbanded soon. I’m not comfortable with only giving ya like two games”
“I..I see..”
Mei outstretched her hand to give you back your application
“…thanks anyways.” You looked back down at the floor, gently taking your application from her, and walked out of the empty gym disappointed. The outside world was blocked out by your raging thoughts, the school empty now other than the odd few clubs who were allowed to stay later.
This wasn’t the end of the world right? I mean, you’ve only been doing volleyball every year since you were twelve years old! Ahahaha…
OH WHO ARE YOU KIDDING?! WHAT THE HELL NIGHT RAVEN!
You thought angrily crushing your application with a bit too harsh of a grip. There were no other clubs around that taught high schoolers or places that would put you on the court with an actual team so what were you supposed to do?
Suddenly you stopped, a smirk spreading on your face. The principal surly wouldn’t mind right? After all he’s a shallow man! With enough money to buy his silence it would work out perfectly!
With a new found motivation you started your trek home. Disguising yourself as a boy would totally work! The team’s great and really talented! Plus they had some really great coaches and players in the past!
This may truly work!
Little idea I’ve had for a while! Let me know how you liked it or what I could fix my loves <3

rules: List the first line of your last 10 (posted) fics and see if there’s a pattern! Thanks @dual-domination and @bladedweaponsandswishycoats for tagging me! <3
“Commander,” said Ivanova’s comm. (A Field Telepaths' Guide to Types of Rogues Babylon 5, Ivanova/Talia Winters) (Next line is a bit longer: She needed a drink. She needed rest. She needed her comm to stuff it for all of the two hours of regulation rest that they were required to have even when they were working back-to-back shifts, so she could actually take that rest and not suffer sleep brain.
The world of the dead. Who could say what all the souls in the long line of dead souls thought as Lyra and Will led them out. There were murmurs of course. So everyone could hear those immediately around them. What everyone thought, that was beyond everyone’s ability. (Long Distance Relationship, His Dark Materials, Lyra Silvertongue/Will Parry)
Zhang Rishan heard who had come calling at the Xinyue and did the only thing he could. He closed the door. (Zhang Rishan closed the door to his office: What else could he do after all, Daomu Biji, Zhang Rishan & Zhang Qiling)
Yoo Jaeyi’s first thought was she was only a high school student. Wasn’t she too young to be dealing with this? (Missing Persons Flyers, Beyond Evil, Yoo Jaeyi & Lee Dongsik)
The first few times Shen Wei woke up from a nightmare where the entire weight of the world was resting on his shoulders until it crushed him, he thought nothing of it. After all, he had had the weight of the world happen to him, all those years before, and then he had been the only one around to carry it. It made sense that now that he finally had someone to share the weight of the mountains and rivers with, now that he had Kunlun back to himself lying beside him in bed, only now was he releasing stress born from those years of carrying it. (Pangu Split Heaven and Earth and Then Himself Too, Guardian - novel, Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan, Shen Wei & Gui Mian)
It all started when a fellow professor saw Shen Wei stretching after having a particularly awful day. Apparently the other professor recognized it as a qigong stretch. Shen Wei did keep track of things enough to be aware of the qigong fad that had appeared lately across both Dragon City and China in general. Ok, maybe a little longer ago than lately, but in the grand scheme of things, within a human lifetime, and a young human lifetime at that. But he had been unaware that someone would put together his moving his energy around with qigong. (Qigong Class with Professor Shen, Guardian, Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan)
“Chief Zhao, there is a young man here to see you. He appears to be human. But… you’ll have to hear him out,” Zhu Hong announced when Zhao Yunlan entered the office one morning later in the year in 2015. (Loss of Soul, Daomu Biji, Guardian, main cast & main cast)
“Babies! I’m telling you! They are literal babies!” Pangzi ranted at him. (Younger Than We Were, Daomu Biji Sha Hai, Zhang Rishan & Wang Pangzi)
“You know, my husband isn’t allowed to make tang yuan anymore either. That’s why both of those good-for-nothings are in the other room and not allowed in here while they are made,” Mama Zhao explained to Shen Wei. She pinched off another bit of the filling and rolled it into a ball. Shen Wei followed her and took each ball to pop into a ball of dough, which he quickly smoothed up and over the filling. (Tang Yuan with Mama Zhao, Guardian, Mama Zhao & Shen Wei)
They should have been suspecting a trap. The tomb was too easy to get into. Admittedly, it was far out in the middle of nowhere. But in terms of actually being able to find it and climb into it once there, it was pretty easy. Tombs like that tended to have traps. (Revitalizing the Zhang family, Daomu Biji, Zhang Qiling, Zhang Rishan, Wu Xie, Zhang Haike)
So I like to start mid scene/mid-action, and then go back and explain/scene-describe what's going on (or just move forward from the mid-scene point). Other than that, I don't know. I tend to try to match the mood I am trying to go for, usually unsuccessfully. I should go back and read the source material more before redrafting in the future.
Whoever wants to do the ask meme can! Take this as your invite!

He accepted his classmate's chocolates gracefully, then declared his lack of interest with as much dignity as he could muster. She deserved the courtesy. At least she'd acknowledged that Valentine's Day was all about her, and not about him in the slightest.
Because if any of these girls had taken the time to actually get to know him, they’d quickly realize something even more important than his lack of interest in girls.

Familiar Face - Ukai Keishin x Reader
Summary: Ukai catches up with an old friend who has returned to Miyagi after being gone for 7 years.
Word Count: 4469
Warnings: SMUT. If you are uncomfortable with sex then DON’T READ THIS.
Author’s Note: I like dropping hints that I like older men... I like older men. Also, special thanks to the Haiku Writer’s Chat for helping me with this fic!
Tagging: @cmllnc @haik-whoo
“And look at this picture! He totally went bald, it’s only been a couple years and he’s completely bald!”
Ukai sighed deeply, trying to tune out Shimada’s and Takinoue’s gossip as he flipped through a magazine at the store counter.
Shimada had recently made it a point to friend all their old classmates on FaceBook, claiming it would be good to ‘get in touch’ with everyone and set up a reunion.
Ukai was sure it was an attempt to rekindle old flames with their female classmates.
“Why haven’t you joined FaceBook, Ukai? If you join and you friend me, I’ll only be a couple more people away from having our whole class on here!” Shimada exclaimed, continuing to scroll through his feed while Takinoue looked over his shoulder.
“I don’t need a bunch of strangers to know my business,” Ukai replied, not bothering to glance up at them from his magazine, “If they matter, they’ll already know.”
Shimada huffed before returning to his recommended friends list.
A chirp from the phone followed by an excited gasp caused Ukai to give another irritated sigh.
“(Y/n) friended me back!” Shimada said excitedly.
Ukai finally looked up from the reading material, resisting the urge to completely set it aside and attempt to snatch the phone from his friend’s hands.
“Woah! She looks totally different- she messaged me!”
Well, that was enough for Ukai to toss the magazine aside and try to get a look at the phone.
“What? What’d she say?”
“Oh nowww you’re interested!” Shimada huffed, shielding the phone from Ukai’s eyes. “She said she’s moving back to town for work. She wants to meet for dinner and drinks tonight.”
Ukai would never admit to it, but that made his heart drop. He hadn’t seen or heard from (Y/n) in 7 years.
She decided to go to college in the city, meaning she left everything behind. Including Ukai. After being best friends since middle school (and boyfriend and girlfriend their third year of high school) she just left.
It wasn’t like Ukai didn’t understand. He totally understood why she wanted to go. That didn’t make their breakup any easier though.
“Lucky for you, she’s asking me to invite you and Takinoue.” Shimada smiled, typing out his reply to her.
“What are you saying?” Ukai asked, crossing his arms and sitting back in his chair.
“That we’ll see her at 7 at our old spot.” Shimada replied, sending the message before any of them could object. Not that Ukai would.
He would have to haul ass back to the shop from Karasuno, get changed into something presentable, then haul ass to the restaurant. But he would do it if it meant seeing (Y/n) again.
And that is exactly what he did.
He rushed his last words to the team before sprinting out of the gym, leaving the the boys confused and Takeda scrambling to come up with words of encouragement on the spot.
Once Ukai arrived at the restaurant, he was showered and dressed in jeans and a casual button-up. Something to show he tried but not really.
Shimada and Takinoue had seated themselves to face the door, meaning (Y/n)’s back was to Ukai when he arrived. Once the two started to wave Ukai over, (Y/n) turned to look at him and smiled.
Ukai was suddenly 18 years old again; palms sweaty and knees weak from that familiar smile.
“Keishin!” (Y/n) got up from her spot and leapt into his arms, wrapping her arms around his neck in a tight embrace he wasn’t expecting. “It’s been so long!”
He quickly returned the hug, lifting her off her tip-toes for a moment. “Too long.”
Ukai set her back down, pulling out of the embrace and repressing the blush he had felt creeping up his neck.
The two sat down, all while (Y/n) continued staring at Ukai. “You look so different, look at this hair!” she beamed, lightly tugging on a blonde strand of hair. “You got your ears pierced too!”
“Yeah,” Ukai smiled, scratching at the back of his head, “I went a little overboard after graduation but I think it fits me...” More like after you left...
“Well I love it. It definitely fits you.” (Y/n) smiled, her gaze lingering on him before turning back to her drink.
“Well, let’s toast! To rekindling old friendships!” Takinoue held up his glass, clinking it against the other three.
Ukai watched (Y/n) from the corner of his eye as he sipped at his beer. It was almost room temperature since they ordered it before he arrived, but his thoughts were wandering elsewhere.
It would be way too forward to tell her how beautiful she had gotten in the years she was gone. When they finally got together their third year, she was a budding flower, still beautiful in her own right as a young woman. Now she was fully bloomed, radiant and flawless. A woman.
Rather than spilling his guts to her about how much he missed her and how these past 7 years were agony, Ukai spent the night laughing about old times while also catching up on more recent events.
“You’re really coaching at Karasuno huh? And to think you gave your gramps all that shit for sticking around like that...” (Y/n) smirked, downing the last of her drink.
“This is different, they really needed it.” Ukai smiled, tapping his fingers against his glass.
“You guys really needed it too, though.” she quipped, earning a laugh from Shimada and Takinoue.
“And what about you? You said you came back for work. What work?” Ukai asked, lightly nudging (Y/n) with his elbow.
(Y/n) shrugged, “I’m an athletic trainer and physical therapist. I’m interviewing for a job tomorrow. That’s all I’ll say about it because I don’t want to jinx it.” There was a coy smile playing on her lips. Either it was the alcohol or she was up to something.
“Well good lu-” Ukai was cut off by (Y/n) covering his mouth.
“No! You’ll jinx it!” (Y/n) giggled, keeping her palm firmly against his lips.
Ukai responded in kind by dragging his tongue along her palm, earning a squeal of disgust from (Y/n) as she pulled back.
“Sick! Keep your bodily fluids to yourself!” (Y/n) groaned, wiping her hand on his shirt.
“Need I remind you there was a time when you didn’t mind my spit.” Ukai smirked, looking away from her to hide his slight blush.
“Oh I don’t need any reminders there.” (Y/n) replied, rolling her eyes at him.
“I can’t believe you two dated.” Takinoue sighed, resting his chin on his palm.
Ukai sent a small glare his way.
“N-not as in you two weren’t a good fit! It’s more like... we all kind of expected you both to get together, when it finally happened it was like a dream!” he explained.
“He’s right,” Shimada added, slowly nodding. “No more tip-toeing around each other. No more cat and mouse. Just boom! Ukai and (Y/n)! They’re like an elephant! When they walk into a room it’s like, okay! They’re in there!”
Now there was no hiding the blush on Ukai’s cheeks. He looked down at (Y/n), who had started shuffling in her spot.
“O-okay, judging from his volume I think it’s time to call it a night.” (Y/n) said, checking her phone for the time. “I need to get to bed soonish anyway. Interview’s in the afternoon but I still want time to get ready.”
“I can get him home.” Takinoue said, dropping cash on the table and helping Shimada up. “We’ll catch up again soon.”
Ukai and (Y/n) bid them goodbye as they began fishing for their wallets.
“You back home home? Or have you found a place?” Ukai asked, helping (Y/n) onto her feet once she paid her fair share of the tab.
She shook her head, “Im in a hotel kinda nearby. Thought it would be weird going back to my parents’ place as a 26 year old...”
Ukai chuckled, following her out of the restaurant. “I don’t blame you.”
The two went silent for a bit, shuffling their feet and hesitating to make eye contact.
“...Shimada never could hold his liquor, huh?” Ukai asked, earning a giggle from (Y/n).
“You’d think after all these years he would have learned...” she mused, running a hand through her hair.
They both went silent again until (Y/n) spoke up, her tone conveying an inkling of hope.
“I have to get up early and all but even then... I’m still kind of thirsty...”
Ukai gave her a small smile, “We can get some beer on the house from the shop...?”
(Y/n) smiled back, “I’d like that.”
He offered (Y/n) his arm, hiding his excitement when she linked their arms and began walking with him in the direction of the shop.
He was sure to lock the door behind them, keeping the lights off so they wouldn’t be disturbed. Even though the shop sign read ‘closed,’ some of the Karasuno boys would still try to get in if the lights were on.
“Do we get to drink in the dark the rest of the night?” (Y/n) asked, taking a swig of her drink.
“We can go upstairs... sit in the living room and talk.” Ukai offered, his palms getting sweaty all over again.
Once (Y/n) accepted, he lead her up the staircase in the back of the store, unlocking the door to his flat and letting her enter first.
“Ooooo, bachelor pad.” She teased, looking around the room. It was surprisingly clean, except for the clothes trail towards the shower he had left earlier.
“Nothing to see here!” he shouted, swiping his boxer briefs from off the floor and throwing them into his bedroom.
(Y/n) giggled, turning away to look at the wall decorations he had strung up. Some movie posters, one karasuno poster, and a couple pictures of their friend group in high school.
She paused at a particular photo of the two of them at graduation, smiling fondly at the memory. “Bring a lot of women up here?”
Ukai had been gathering the rest of the clothes on the floor, pausing at the question. “None that are really noteworthy...”
(Y/n) hummed to herself, tearing her eyes away from the picture and making her way to the couch.
“It’s kind of awkward since the town is small... so I’ve kinda stopped doing that.” he explained, retrieving his beer and sitting beside her.
“Kinda?” she asked.
Ukai shrugged, “I’m only human... I slip up and break my own rules every now and then.”
(Y/n) smiled slightly, shaking her head and taking another drink. “Some things never change...” she mumbled against the bottle.
He kept his eyes on her the whole time, tapping his thumb against the glass. “Did you...?”
(Y/n) bit her lip, unwilling to meet his gaze before taking a big swig of her drink.
“You seemed so sure you would before you left... but it still feels like the same (Y/n).” Ukai continued, slowly looking her over.
“Is it bad if I didn’t change?” she asked, staring at a random corner of the room.
“Not at all...” Ukai paused, unable to hold back a sigh before continuing. “It just makes me wonder... why break up if the only thing that really changed was your zip code...”
“I mean- I did change. I grew up, you did too. I just didn’t want it to end badly because of those growing pains.” (Y/n) explained. “Did... did you think it ended badly?”
“N-no, no I didn’t. I’m grateful it ended the way it did, rather than you falling out of love with me or something... Not that you still love me now- I’m just- Ugh! Bottom line, I’m fine with how things happened. It just... stings...”
(Y/n) chewed at her lip, something Ukai knew she did when she was anxious. He just made things super weird, all cuz he wanted closure.
“Do you have any regrets?” she suddenly asked, finally looking up at him.
Ukai sighed softly, slowly nodding his head. “Yeah... just one... I didn’t go after you.... Do you...?”
(Y/n) chuckled softly, turning back to her bottle. “Yeah actually... I didn’t stay with you.”
The two went silent. Ukai hadn’t meant for the conversation to take this turn. He wasn’t even drunk and he was still spilling his guts over a breakup from 7 years ago.
(Y/n) downed the last of her beer, setting the empty bottle on the coffee table before fully facing Ukai. “Can we try something?”
He raised an eyebrow at her, setting his bottle on the coffee table before turning to her.
“You’re going to kiss me. And if we don’t feel anything, I’ll leave and act like it never happened...” (Y/n) explained. It was a simple set of instructions but it had Ukai’s heart ready to jump out of his chest.
“And if we feel something?” He asked.
(Y/n) shrugged. “I dunno. But I won’t leave...”
Ukai took a deep breath, closing his eyes momentarily to regain his confidence.
“Okay,” he opened his eyes, “I’m ready.”
“You’re kissing your ex-girlfriend, not disarming a bomb.” (Y/n) quipped.
“Well, now I have to take another deep breath because you broke my concentration.” Ukai complained.
“Will you just hurry-”
Without warning, Ukai cupped (Y/n)’s cheeks and pulled her into a gentle, passionate kiss.
He told himself to keep it simple, but 7 years of repressed feelings suddenly began pouring out into this one intimate moment. Before he knew it, (Y/n) was kissing him back, hands clinging to his shirt and pulling him closer.
(Y/n) brushed her tongue over his lip, earning a moan from Ukai as he pulled her body flush against his.
(Y/n) pulled away for a moment, lightly pushed Ukai to lay on his back, then moved between his legs and flush against him.
Ukai breathlessly pulled her into another kiss, sighing shakily against her lips as his hands roamed her body. He was beginning to regret wearing jeans instead of his usual sweat pants.
(Y/n) tossed his hairband aside and began running her fingers through his hair, causing another moan to bubble from his lips.
No other women made him moan like this. But this was (Y/n). (Y/n) who knew him inside and out. (Y/n) who he knew inside and out.
He brushed his hand through her hair, lightly gripping it and pulling her away, tugging her head to the side and dragging his tongue up her throat. She moaned shakily, gripping his shirt so tight that Ukai thought the buttons might pop off.
The sudden feeling of (Y/n) grinding her hips against Ukai’s had him tugging her hair harder and biting her neck.
(Y/n) whined and began shakily unbuttoning his shirt.
He parted from her neck and moved her to sit up, taking off the button-up and his undershirt.
(Y/n) had gotten busy trying to take off her dress, she almost didn’t notice Ukai’s shirtless body.
She went hot, looking over his amazing physique. He looked nothing like this when they were last together. Something special caught her eye, causing her to smirk once her dress was tossed aside.
“When’d you do this?” she asked, brushing her fingers over one of his pierced nipples. Ukai shivered at her touch. He retaliated by reaching around her and unclasping her bra, tossing it away.
“I told you I went overboard after you left...” he mumbled, kneading her breasts.
(Y/n) moaned shakily, peppering needy kisses against Ukai’s lips. “Take me right here...” she murmured between kisses.
Ukai suddenly flipped their position, getting (Y/n) on her back and straddling her. He pulled his wallet from his back pocket, beginning to take a condom out until (Y/n) stopped him.
“Nuh-uh, I’m on the pill. I’m clean. I want you raw.” She panted, hastily unbuckling his belt.
This was a dream come true.
Ukai threw the wallet aside and tugged off (Y/n)’s panties, stuffing them in the pocket of his jeans before tugging his pants halfway down his thighs.
(Y/n)’s eyes went wide at the sight of him. She gripped the couch cushion as he rubbed his tip against her slit, sighing shakily.
“Maybe I should have stretched first...” (Y/n) breathed, hips twitching as Ukai eased the tip inside of her.
“You’ll get a good stretch from this, angel...” he grunted, her old nickname adding onto the pleasure they were both experiencing.
Ukai eased in deeper, his hips stuttering as (Y/n) dug her nails into his arms. His teeth dug into his bottom lip and his eyes screwed shut. They moaned in unison once he was fully inside of her.
“Kei, if you don’t move...” (Y/n) whined, rolling her hips to gain some friction.
Ukai moaned shakily, slowly rocking his hips against her’s. “Y-you’re as tight as the first time we fucked...”
(Y/n) gasped as Ukai suddenly hit her g-spot, prompting him to thrust faster into that spot he instantly recognized. “Has my angel been waiting for me this whole time?”
She moaned louder, dragging her nails down his arms, earning a symphony of moans from him as well.
Ukai hooked one arm under her leg, spreading her legs wider as he continued plowing into her. He struggled to keep himself propped up with the other hand, shaking hard as (Y/n) began to tighten around him.
He pressed his forehead to hers, growling as she stared into his eyes and clawed at his shoulders.
“Keiiii pleaaaase!” she shrieked, squirming against him.
“T-that’s it, angel. Let me have it...” he groaned, brushing his lips against hers.
(Y/n) screamed shakily, burying her face in Ukai’s neck and biting him.
Ukai came after a few more thrusts, emptying himself inside her while he moaned wildly.
They both panted hard, a wave of euphoria crashing into them in the wake of their orgasms.
(Y/n) tangled her fingers in his hair and pulled him into a sloppy kiss.
Once they parted, he stood straight and took off his jeans, standing completely bare in front of (Y/n).
She was slightly confused until he lifted her off the couch and took her to his bedroom. He carefully laid her down before flopping onto the bed beside her.
(Y/n) let out a tired giggle, looking Ukai over as he still struggled to catch his breath.
“I think I have a cramp in my leg...” he groaned.
“Want me to rub it out?” (Y/n) teased, reaching towards him and brushing a strand of hair out of his face.
He slowly shook his head before taking her hand and kissing the tip of her middle finger. “Anymore friction from you and my soul will ascend into heaven.”
(Y/n) sighed softly, relaxing into the mattress and closing her eyes. “I shouldn’t stay... I have my job interview tomorrow.”
Ukai moved closer to her, pressing a soft kiss to her temple. “I have to open the shop up early tomorrow. I’ll wake you up so you have time to go to your hotel and make sure you’re ready... okay?”
(Y/n) slowly nodded, leaning up and kissing him once more.
“I guess this means we still feel something, huh?” Ukai asked, pulling the covers over their bodies.
“I guess so...” (Y/n) smiled, gently hugging his waist. “Maybe you can take me on a proper date tomorrow night... then it can be official.”
He chuckled softly, the need to sleep overcoming his need to say something clever. “Goodnight, (Y/n)...”
“Goodnight, Kei...”
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The next day went by like a breeze for Ukai. He got one last kiss from (Y/n) when she left that morning, along with her new phone number. She didn’t even ask for her panties back.
Ukai wore a hoodie that easily covered the bite mark (Y/n) left him, meaning he wouldn’t have to deal with stupid questions from the boys at Karasuno.
Speaking of the boys, they were responding well to the new drills he and Takeda drew up. They were already showing improvement with their spikes and their serves. It was a perfect day.
Ukai was in the process of taking a swig of water when he heard the gym doors open, followed by a “HEADS UP!” from Noya.
The sound of a volleyball smacking against someone’s arm’s made the gym go silent. Hinata caught the stray ball, looking helplessly at Ukai.
The coach turned to see who had entered and blocked the ball.
He snorted, keeled over, and spat up the water he had been drinking onto the gym floor.
Takeda began slapping his back to help clear his airway as the school’s principal thanked (Y/n) profusely.
Ukai figured she had sidestepped in front of the principal and blocked the ball from smacking him right in the family jewels. She never joined Karasuno’s girl’s team, but she had helped Ukai practice enough to know how to receive a ball.
The principal cleared his throat, regained his composure, and led (Y/n) towards the coaches.
Ukai stood up straight, still struggling to breath as he looked her over. She was wearing a button-up shirt, a pencil skirt and heels. She was like an image out of a sexy librarian fantasy... only this was the real world. This was really happening.
“Coach Ukai, Coach Takeda, I would like to introduce your new athletic trainer!” the principal announced, beaming as Takeda and (Y/n) bowed to one another.
“It’s wonderful to meet-”
“What are you doing here?” Ukai coughed, interrupting Takeda.
(Y/n) smiled bashfully, giving him a small shrug of her shoulders. “I told you at dinner I didn’t want to say more about the job... I coulda jinxed it...”
“Ohhh!” the principal exclaimed, “I don’t know how I didn’t realize you two were classmates! What a wonderful reunion!”
“I did tell you we needed a trainer to come in and help before nationals...” Takeda murmured, nervously shifting where he stood.
“Well, I’ll leave you to it. Her first official day is tomorrow.” The principal left with that, Ukai realizing how silent the gym was as his footsteps got further and further away.
“H-Hey! What are you doing?! Get back to your drills!” he shouted at the team.
The boys got their asses back in gear, stealing glances at the coaches and their new trainer every now and then.
“I’m going to... go... over there...” Takeda stuttered. He quickly bowed to (Y/n) before running to the opposite side of the court.
“Are you really that upset?” (Y/n) frowned.
Ukai sighed softly rubbing at his temples. “No... I just really wish you told me...”
“Well... I didn’t exactly plan on last night-” (Y/n) paused when she noticed one of the boys, Hinata, slowly sidestepping closer to them to listen in on what was happening.
“Get back to spiking or you’ll be on towel duty for a month.” Ukai grumbled.
Hinata squeaked before running back onto the court.
“I didn’t plan on last night to go the way it did. I thought we’d get dinner, go our separate ways, then surprise! I’m here and we get to live out some slowburn fantasy where we fall for each other again.” (Y/n) explained, keeping her voice low.
Ukai sighed, closing his eyes and pinching the bridge of his nose.
He felt (Y/n) slowly place her hand on his arm, wandering until she took his hand in hers. “Please just give me a chance? I want to help you get them to nationals...”
He slowly opens his eyes, groaning at the way she batted her eyes at him.
“Fine.”
(Y/n) smiled wide and hugged him tightly, snickering when he completely flushed red. “This is gonna be so much fun... now introduce me to the team.”
Once their current drill was complete, Ukai called the team over, noting the way the boys eyed (Y/n) with a mix of curiosity and confusion.
“Alright, this is (Y/n). She’s an old friend and she’s going to be our new athletic trainer. She’s gonna do everything in her power to whip you into shape for nationals. So do as she says and we won’t have any issues.”
A couple of the boys raised their hands high.
“Wow, there are questions about that... Tanaka.” Ukai pointed at the redhead.
“Is she your girlfriend?” he asked, no hesitation or shame in his words.
Ukai tensed. (Y/n) snickered.
“N-Not relevant!”
“Is she our Coach Mom now?” Noya piped up.
“No!”
“So you're not our Coach Dad?” Noya asked.
“Of course not!”
“I have a question not having to do with Coach Mom at all!” Hinata shouted.
Ukai breathed a sigh of relief. “Thank god. What’s your question?”
“What’s on your neck?”
Ukai went completely red again as (Y/n) tried to stifle her laughter.
“Is that from Coach Mom?” Noya shrieked, grabbing Asahi’s arms and shaking him wildly. “That’s from Coach Mom!”
“It totally is from Coach Mom...” Suga mumbled.
“Don’t encourage them.” Daichi said, nudging Suga.
“THE NEXT PERSON TO CALL (Y/n) COACH MOM HAS TO RUN 50 LAPS!” Ukai yelled, finally silencing the boys.
“L-lets just get back to our drills!” Takeda shouted, ushering the boys back onto the court.
“I just wanted to know what was on his neck...” Hinata pouted, “Did Coach Mom really do that-”
“50 laps Hinata!”
“Awwww! Do I have to, Coach Mom?!”
“100 LAPS!”
“No!” (Y/n) barked, lightly pushing Ukai before turning to Hinata. “That’s absurd, you don’t have to.”
Ukai adjusted his hoodie, glancing at (Y/n) as she crossed her arms. “You’d think you’d be a little less tense after last night-”
“Please just go home.” Ukai sighed, taking the keys to his flat from his pocket and placing them in her hand.
She blinked down at the keys in shock.
“I don’t want you in some hotel room when I have a perfectly good bed at my place... I’ll help you get your things from the hotel once practice is over...” He explained, scratching at the back of his head while keeping his eyes on the team.
“Guess you are my boyfriend then...” (Y/n) smiled. She quickly pressed a kiss to Ukai’s cheek before turning on her heels to leave. “See you at home, Coach Dad...”
Ukai turned to watch her leave, a small smile on his face. It wasn’t such a bad nickname when she said it...

⇺ ⁂⁂⁂⁂⁂⁂⁂⁂⁂⁂⁂⁂⁂⁂⁂⁂⁂⁂⁂⁂⁂⁂⁂⁂ ⇻
↣ Masterpost
↣ inspired by @haik-choo’s post
↣ wc: 1.7k
↣ warnings: some self inflicted pain (nothing major!), cheating mentions, serious heartbreak.
↣ song recommendation: tolerate it - taylor swift
↣ preamble (as written by haik-choo): akaashi keiji doesn’t get that not everyone can understand how someone feels with one look. he puts an extra sugar in his coffee and expects you to know that he wants to go out to a bakery, he clicks his red pens a few extra times and expects you to know that he needs refills – he says he has a lot of work tonight and expects you to make him midnight snacks. to him, that stuff is easy. why can’t you understand him? he does it for you – he shouldn’t have to say it out loud. you should already know what he’s thinking. if you don’t, maybe you don’t love him as much as he thought you did.
The complexity of love has never been accurately represented in the media. Films present reality through the lens of a fractured mirror to provide viewers a sense of emotion they cannot find elsewhere. Fairy tales are perhaps the worst form of media to exist. They are created to be consumed by young impressionable children who develop unrealistic expectations that are later thrust upon the unfortunate souls that become their partners. You were one of those children who bought the falsities sold to you. Love was something magical, the intertwining of two hearts.
You were sixteen when you fell in love for the first time. Enthralled by how one emotion could paint new colours in the horizons, you allowed yourself to fall… it was perfect, until you found yourself crying on the bathroom floor, wondering why the fairy tales lied to you.
You were seventeen when you first experienced heart break. Even now, you can remember the shame that drenched your soul when you learned that the one you loved, had slept with someone else. Each inch of your skin was tainted by your “prince charming.”
That night, your mother had to drag you out of the bath. The pads of your toes and fingers had shriveled up, while your arms and legs burned a bright crimson from the incessant scrubbing. Yet the tingling of your skin was merely a scratch in comparison to the laceration inside of your heart, and there was no band aid that you could apply there.
That was December 3rd 2014 – the date you abandoned your foolish ideals.
You met Akaashi Keiji exactly six months later.
If you were ever asked to describe the mystery that is Keiji, where would you begin? Were there truly any words that could accurately capture the very essence of his kind soul? Or the depth of this mesmerizing eyes? How would you possibly begin to explain how a single caress by his calloused fingertips had melted away the imaginary grime that had coated your skin? If anyone was prince charming, it was him.
But little did you know that sometimes he doubted whether you were his Cinderella. His happily ever after…
The first indication of his veiled concerns occurred in your last year of high school. With the departure of his third-year friends, Akaashi was titled captain of the boy’s volleyball team. While he enjoyed volleyball, he was never obsessed with the sport like his best friend. Volleyball was his hobby, nothing more and nothing less. He was more concerned with maintaining his high academic record than securing a ticket to nationals. Last year balancing the various fragments of his life was simple. But the absence of his friends weighed on him, each day the anxiety increased until he could barely sit without jitters swarming his limbs. As his girlfriend, you should have known the stress he was battling… Sure, he was pushing you away, but you should have known why.
Yet, when you attempted to thwart his efforts to establish distance, you were chastised for your lack of understanding.
“Y/n. I am busy. Please do not disturb me during practice.” Not the slightest bit of respect was allocated to you, despite your status as his girlfriend. And while his pointed response was undoubtedly directed towards to you, his attention was on the practice commencing inside of the gym. “Listen, I need to go back. If you want to talk, consider picking a more appropriate time in the future.” Rolling the towel within his grasp, he refused to acknowledge you beyond sharing these words.
“I’m sorry. It won’t happen again.” To even utter an apology stole the limited resolve you had to address the situation. How much did you have to degrade yourself to fix a relationship he evidently did not want?
But the following day at lunch period, a dozen roses were delivered to you with an apology note attached to the stems. It was only natural for you to grant him the forgiveness he sought. Dismissing his actions was simple once you rationalized it as a normal reaction to an abundance of pressure. Diamonds may be created under pressure, but he was no diamond, and neither were you.
The second indication of his concealed doubts did not emerge from a set of actions, nor did it include the exchange of harsh words. Rather, it was his silence that nurtured your insecurities and provided you confirmation that while he was your happily-ever-after, you may not be his.
To celebrate Keiji’s 19th birthday, his mother had offered to host a gathering at his childhood home. When the details of the party were conveyed to you, excitement had fluttered to life inside of your stomach. It was the perfect opportunity to develop your relationship with the woman who had raised your wonderful boyfriend. Yet, not even the purest of intentions would save you from the humiliation that awaited you that night.
At one point of the evening, Keiji had vanished for a considerable amount of time. Naturally, you searched the house for your boyfriend. When you peaked inside of the kitchen, you found him engaging in a conversation with his mother. You almost called out to him instinctively, except your vocal cords denied you access when you caught the end of their conversation.
“Has she been tending to your needs yet? Or has she remained as useless as before?” The older woman clutched the stem of her wine glass, with a scoff clawing at her throat. It seemed that the liquor coating her tongue had turned the muscular organ into a knife.
Keiji stood with his back pressed against the kitchen island, listening without a reaction. The nonchalance emanating from his demeanour indicated that this was not the first occurrence. No, this had happened before, otherwise he would have had some form of a reaction. A flinch – a twitch – anything. But he stood still, emotionless, distant. The targeting comments were equivalent to a whisper in the wind – not deserving of a response, nor a stir.
“Keiji, you are aware that you are wasting your time and yet you stay with her?” The sigh falling from her stained lips was extended to emphasize her distress, and the gentle sound was enough to weaken your knees.
No longer able to support your own weight, you leaned against the wall, allowing your eyelids to flutter shut. Your fingers tangled with the fabric of your shirt as you waited for his response.
Say something – anything. Just tell her she’s wrong.
Yet the denial never came.
The first two indications were shoved aside, dismissed with excuses that would serve as a band-aid on your decaying relationship. But then came the third.
The third indication of his doubt occurred on an average college night when you were in the process of selecting your outfit for the night. Bokuto had arranged an unofficial Fukurodani reunion for the boy’s volleyball team. As Keiji’s girlfriend, the invite was naturally extended to you. Usually your boyfriend would be in higher spirits knowing that he would soon be in the company of his high school friends. But tonight, a frown remained etched into his features, not wavering for even a single moment.
“Which one? I don’t want to be underdressed. But on the other hand, Kou is always dressed really weird. So, I don’t know.” Two outfits were presented towards the male, a scarlet cocktail dress and a navy pantsuit with a low cut.
“Does it matter, y/n?” The sharp remark was blown out with a heavy sigh. It was as though he could not muster the energy to care for your feelings. Or perhaps, he simply chose to display his inner conflict, with no concern of the consequences of his decision.
The noise was startling enough to strip you of the excitement that once animated your movements.
“I guess not, but is it wrong that I want to look good for my boyfriend?” The counter question was voiced barely above a whisper, with each word sounding fainter than the last.
“Maybe if you knew me well enough you wouldn’t have to ask.” His eyes did not meet yours, rather they stayed fixed on the writing utensil within his grasp. “It’s not that hard, y/n. You just don’t care enough to put in the effort.”
The verbal assaults implanted daggers into your chest, but the pain would only become worse – since he was not done just yet.
“If you refuse to love me with your entire heart, what is the point? Let me go.”
“Keiji!” Pain cut along the inside of your throat from the shriek erupting from your chest. Had you ever screamed his name in quite a harsh manner? Liquid blurred your vision, and with your air-filled organs wheezing in distress, your words were stated between staggered breaths.
“I am not a fucking mind reader.” The fog of desperation encompassing you was comprised of poison, one that soon threaded throughout your system. The properties of the poison enflamed your lungs, burning the organs and halting the flow of air. Instinctively your hands were sent to your skin, clawing at the flesh as if you could simply rip out the emotions suffocating you. “Just because I don’t love you the way you think I should, doesn’t mean I don’t.” Whether the words spilling from your lips were responsible for the bitter taste in your mouth, or the tears now gracefully parading down your cheeks was unknown. Either way, the release of the steaming liquid eased the burning sensation in your lungs.
“I’m done, Keiji. I’m done.” Slowly claiming your insides was a thin layer of ice. By now, you had run out of excuses for his behaviour. There were no longer any band-aids you could use to tend to the wounds. The question of whether your boyfriend considered you “the one” was answered.
Despite the ache weaving into your muscles, your feet dragged you to the front door. A piece of you desired to catch one final glimpse of him – as your heart knew this would be the final time you would see him. But afraid you would lose your resolve to leave, you pressed the car keys against your palm, and remained fixed on the exit.
Behind you, the brunette voiced a weak apology – you were unable to catch the exact words, as they were muffled by the fabric of his sleeves. But not even the sweetest words could remedy the situation. Since, now you had accepted the truth.
Love was never a fairy-tale, and Akaashi Keiji was not a prince. Love would never be what you wanted it to be, and it would always hurt.
Love would always hurt.
A/N: I ended up finishing this today because I got into a bad mood and so I needed to channel it into something lol

i keep thinking about all the beloved characters we know, and wanting to know where they are and what they get up to and what they’re doing and and and
saying goodbye to the third years was hard enough, but now suddenly it’s like saying goodbye to *everyone* (until we see who’s still part of the cast?)
and i still wanna know who won nationals this year :’’’’(

Hey fam, I am shook right now
So while I was working at the dental clinic, we found out a patient’s wife was a palm-reader and she was offering discount readings for $20.
I keep a distance from palm-readers, despite my lazy love of Tarot cards--the last palm-reader I talked to DID have genuine intuition, but she was also asking me for more and more money, so I’m like “well, twenty bucks isn’t that bad. Let’s try this palm-reading thing again. Hopefully she’ll be talented WITHOUT trying to bankrupt me.”
HOLY CRAP, BRUH.
LIKE
THIS WOMAN. SHE KNEW STUFF I DIDN’T TELL HER, AND STUFF THAT SHE COULDN’T HAVE GOTTEN FROM COLD-READING.
And, like... I GOT GOOD NEWS. Not the generic kind of good news, either.
You know how I post all this depressing/angry decolonization poetry about the Filipino gods, and my loneliness about being a pagan girl surrounded by Catholics and Christians and otherwise monotheistic worshipers? That is the tip of an iceberg of spiritual stuff, and some of it is more literal than y'all think.
Especially the stuff about Haik, the Tagalog sea-god who modern-day Tagalogs barely remember, who I’m constantly writing depressing urban-fantasy love poetry about, and also a huge-ass novel called “The Crocodile God,” where a FIl-American woman discovers she is his reincarnated wife.
So Haik and a Spirit-Dude have been hanging out and saying we’re gonna meet up (relatively) soon. I don’t believe them for two reasons: Haik said he brought Spirit-Dude over because 1) he wants me to be happy because he’s one of my ancestral gods, plus nobody likes seeing one of their community constantly depressed and struggling, and 2) he loves that I’m writing all these new poems and stories about him after five hundred years of colonization, so it’s like “HEY GIRL, YOU ARE CONSTANTLY DOING ME A SOLID AND I’MMA GET YOU A BOYFRIEND FOR THAT.”
I don’t believe Spirit-Dude either, when he says he’s coming over to California in time. See, Spirit-Dude looks like a living person, and that is reaaaaaaally shaky grounds for my sanity. Before now, I only listened to him about nice, safe, not-potential-delusions topics.
But then the palm-reader started telling me about my future and relationships, and how everything was finally gonna work out and I’d be okay soon (just not as soon as I want, which is the frustrating part).
And Spirit-Dude and Haik laughed their asses off and went, “BAHAHAHA WE TOLD YOU ALL THIS ALREADY, BABE. IT’S OKAY THOUGH. YOU NEED TO HEAR IT FROM A PERSON SOMETIMES.”
Like, I have been shook ALL DAMN DAY. I’m just wandering around trying to remember how to feel about, you know, GOOD NEWS.
I’ve been depressed and stuck in a rut for most of my adult life, so when people say things like “It’s all gonna work out” or “keep going with your art,” I just figure it’s not gonna get WORSE. Like, I’ll still have a basic-necessities-covered life, but my ass is still gonna be stuck living at my mom’s place, forever trying to save up while I beg people to read my writing SO I CAN EARN MONEY THROUGH ART, but only getting 1% of a response.
My patron goddess, the Morrigan, is the Irish goddess of sovereignty, war, and prophesy (also infamous as the goddess of VENGEANCE AND WAR-FRENZY AND NO ONE REALLY GETS HER). While she is scary, I trust her with my life, seeing as she yelled at me to get therapy during my rock-bottom point in high school. She also frequently motivates me to keep on trucking with my art, even if it’s from anger, spite, or “my soul will die if I don’t do art.”
Dionysus is the Greek god of art, prophesy, wine/drugs, and mental illness (he, like the Morrigan, has a mythical track record of Bad Stuff because of the last two). He considers himself my husband, and I accepted it after initial hesitance because THIS MAN GETS ME. He is constantly checking in with me about whether I’ve finally gone insane (the answer is usually “No, you’re weird and depressed and a shaman, and society hates all of that.”).
And at the behest of Haik, these two teamed up and got the client with his palm-reader wife over to the clinic.
Brighid (Irish healer-goddess, and a much more moderate artist than Dionysus) came up while I was eating dinner and she went, “Honey, I know you got a lot of big news today and you never believe the nice things anymore, so if you feel overwhelmed, just talk to me, okay?”
Meanwhile: Haik is upset that I can’t take good news very well. I mean, I'm relieved to hear it, but I also don’t know what to DO with that relief. I have no idea if I want to cry or laugh, or cry AND laugh. So yeah, lots of hugs from him.
Spirit-Dude is just hanging out like usual, and giving me more hugs and telling me that YES, RELIEF IS GOOD. JUST BREATHE, HONEY.
Last week, Spirit-Dude told me: “Babe, if you don’t believe in yourself, at least believe in what you do.” And it stuck with me how he knows I’m depressed and sometimes I literally can’t think positive about things, but he figured out a way to make me feel better anyway.
My therapist has actually noted that YES, the spirits are incredibly supportive and they give me a lot of emotional breathing-room, which is 1) not a common sign in the mental illnesses where you hear voices, and 2) very different from the authoritative Western view of deity/spirit.
And I figured after the past few months that even if Spirit-Dude isn’t the specific person he looks/acts like, he’s a very pretty and Soft Boy, and I would love it if I met his real self soon. (Spirit-Dude has countered that he isn’t using a fake identity because he’s not a liar, and that’s a crap way to start a relationship.)
It's 2AM and now I keep reminding myself that the palm-reading was YESTERDAY, so it’s a good thing I work tomorrow instead. I might do a Part 2 for this, in case I need to word-vomit again.

UCLA Armenian Music Program – A Year in Review

UCLA Armenian Music Program – A Year in Review
The 2019-2020 academic year was filled with new achievements and milestones for the Armenian Music Program, despite the unique set of challenges imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic this Spring.
A notable development for the Program was the expansion of its academic branch, with two new courses that created a space at UCLA for the exploration of Armenian folk music and traditions: a graduate seminar taught by Melissa Bilal, Distinguished Research Fellow at UCLA Center for Near Eastern Studies and a Lecturer in the Department of Ethnomusicology, and the Armenian Music Ensemble taught by Armen Adamian, UCLA Ethnomusicology Ph.D. student.
The Ensemble, which had its inaugural offering in the Winter Quarter, provided students and the extended community with the opportunity to learn traditional songs, dances, and instruments while sparking interest in the traditions of Armenian ethnographic heritage. Creatively coping with the constraints of the lockdown, students learned how to sing traditional Armenian songs by transcribing and conceptualizing melodic structures and lyrics in different dialects during virtual classes.
An example of creative transcription of the melody of the folk song Zulo, by Alexia Hatun.
Similarly, Armen Adamian, the instructor of the Armenian Music Ensemble, Natalie Kamajian (Culture and Performance Ph.D. student), the instructor of the dance-portion of the ensemble, and collaborator Haik Adamian created a tutorial for the folk dance Gyovnd to continue teaching dance while social distancing.

The VEM Ensemble
While members of the Armenian Music Ensemble were exploring Armenian folk music, the new members of the VEM Quartet began their exploration of Armenian classical music, kicking off the year with outreach performances for UCLA, as well as local Armenian High school students. During the Spring quarter, VEM members continued to stay active and expand their repertoire by learning solo works by contemporary Armenian composers. The VEM Quartet collaborated to create a virtual performance of Komitas’ Kaqavik for the “Gems of Armenian Music” Fiat Lux class. Additionally, Mezzo-soprano Danielle Segen, created a few beautiful video recordings of “Oror” by Komitas, “Manushakin” by G. Chitchian, and of the ancient Armenian Tagh “Horzham”, in collaboration with pianist Victoria Simonyan of the Lark Musical Society, our Community Music Partner.

Modulation Necklace
One of the standout accomplishments of the year has been the release of Modulation Necklace, a CD of Armenian Music, by the prominent label New Focus Recordings. The album was recorded at UCLA’s state of the art recording studio and features UCLA VEM Ensemble along with internationally renowned musicians. The CD received critical praise from a variety of national and international publications, including Fanfare Magazine and Records International. “The musicianship is of the highest quality” -Fanfare Magazine “An attractive and fascinating recital of works by Armenian composers that showcases the wide variety of styles in what is evidently a vital and inventive contemporary music scene in Armenian culture.“ -Records International “Most satisfying” -Textura “Touches both the mind and the heart…This disc turns out to be full of interesting music, well written and exceptionally well-executed by all concerned. Very highly recommended!” -The Art Music Lounge “…Modulation Necklace retains relevance and interest throughout… It is a most stimulating set.” -Capplegate Classical-Modern Music Review
2020-2021 Academic Year
Looking forward to the upcoming academic year, Director of the Program, Movses Pogossian, is excited to announce that four different Armenian Music classes will be offered in 2020-2021. Introduction to Armenian Music taught by Karenn Presti, Armenian Music Ensemble taught by Armen Adamian, and Music and Intersectionality in the Mediterranean taught by Melissa Bilal (guest lecturer from the American University of Armenia), and Masters and Masterpieces of Armenian Classical Music taught by Movses Pogossian, Director of the Armenian Music Program.
Tigran Hamasyan leading a workshop with UCLA School of Music students Winter 2020
The Armenian Music Program also anticipates welcoming back the world-renowned jazz pianist, Tigran Hamasayn, during the winter and spring quarters, for a series of workshops on improvisation. Hamasayn’s new album, The Call Within, which was also recorded at UCLA, will be released this August.
With progress towards fighting the pandemic, the Program is hopeful that live performances will return and the VEM Ensemble will continue its busy outreach program, culminating with a return to Armenia in June 2021. Finally, the Program is looking forward to recording a second CD highlighting the works of contemporary Armenian composers, a “sequel” to Modulation Necklace.
VEM Quartet Outreach to AGBU Vatche & Tamar Manoukian High School Fall 2019
Armenian Music Program’s classes, concerts, tours, collaborations, and recordings have been possible thanks to the assistance and encouragement of its community partners and supporters. Members of the Program are excited to continue the performance, scholarship, and celebration of Armenian Music heritage at UCLA.

APRIL 13: Armen Ohanian (1887-1976)
April 13 seems to be another slow day in wlw history, so we’d like to introduce you to a highly fascinating and enigmatic figure: Armenian dancer and writer Armen Ohanian.
Her birth name was Sophia Pirboudaghian; she was born in Shamakha in 1887 – this is now located in Azerbaijan but at the time it was part of the Russian empire. After an earthquake in 1902, her family moved to Baku. She graduated from school there in 1905; that same year, her father died in the anti-Armenian pogroms. She started out as an actress, going by the name of Sophia Ter-Ohanian in an Armenian theater group in Baku in 1906, and then, two years later, moved to Moscow where she performed as a dancer and studied plastic arts. She appeared for the first time as Armen Ohanian at the Tbilisi Opera in 1909.

After this, she traveled back to Iran, where she performed as a dancer, acted on stage, co-founded the Persian National Theater in Tehran, and generally contributed to expanding the place of women in the public arts. In April 1910, with the help of the Persian Women Benevolent Association, she organized a gala featuring music, literary events, theater, and cinema. It was during that period that she honed her skills in what are categorized as “Oriental dances.” She toured Egypt and the Ottoman Empire, and eventually ended up in London, where she was hired to perform in 1911. An Orientalist craze for exotic forms of dancing was sweeping through the West at the time so basically Ohanian decided to capitalize on the West’s fetishization of the Orient while at the same time finding a way of self-expression in dance that combined American elements (such as methods of “free dance” developed by Isadora Duncan) and Armenian and Iranian music and elements. From there on, she toured extensively all throughout Europe, the United States, and Mexico City, and was usually met with high praise. When her own career as a dancer started declining, she nonetheless continued being active in this milieu: she notably founded a school of dance in Mexico City in 1936, and even made a comeback in the dance scene and on the stage throughout the 40s and 50s.
Her talent for dance should not eclipse her literary talents: she started writing poetry and autobiographical material when she moved to Paris in 1912. She published several memoirs and accounts of her travels, which were widely translated. Well-versed in many languages, she translated books from Russian to Spanish in collaboration with her second husband. She was also politically involved, as an active member of the Mexican Communist Party (which has us wondering if she ever met Frida Kahlo).
She led an eventful love life: when she was young, she’d been married off to an Armenian Iranian doctor (Haik Ter-Ohanian, whose last name she kept) but that didn’t last even one year. As she toured the world and became increasingly known as a dancer and writer, she entertained relationships with various artists, writers, and intellectuals. Most of them appeared to be men, but there are records of Ohanian having an affair with Natalie Barney – which seems plausible enough, given the effervescent artistic context of the time, and which would indicate she was most likely bi. Her second marriage was to a Mexican diplomat in 1922; the couple lived in many different world cities until 1934, when they settled down in Mexico.
Her life was explored in a performance project called Dear Armen created by lee williams boudakian and Kamee Abrahamian. This is the summary:
Garo has been researching Armen Ohanian, an enigmatic Armenian performer and survivor of the early 20th century anti-Armenian pogroms in Baku. Grappling with the discrepancies between Ohanian’s biography and memoirs, they are forced to confront memories from the past, unraveling experiences around gender, sexuality, ethnicity, family, and the role of the artist. An immersive theatre experience featuring a blend of monologue, traditional Armenian dance, erotic performance and live music, Dear Armen weaves together the voices and struggles of three generations of women and gender nonconforming Armenians.
