HOPE MIKAELSON'S VERSES:

for the most part, i adhere to the canon of the originals storyline throughout seasons 1-5. hope's circumstances in being born, her encounters with the hollow, greta sienna's group, the drama and conflict with her family, etc. however, the longer legacies went on, the more i really disliked how they continued her storyline and the overarching lore of the universe. so! let's get into it. ( NOTE: i am always, always open to au's that involve hope's parents being alive and the like. i am not strict in terms of canon. )

salvatore school: hope still attended the boarding school after the hollow was destroyed for good, fulfilling her promise to her father . . . and, initially, distancing herself from the home and family she was struggling to stomach looking at with the guilt lodged in her throat. she did have trouble with her temper, her powers, and overall acceptance of herself with the judgement of some of her peers -- but it was her friends ( the saltzman twins, eventually, raf, etc ) and her remaining family that helped her through it. she was never close to alaric aside from a stiff mentor-mentee relationship due to his distrust of her family ties, and control of her abilities. i refuse to believe that her aunts & uncles would have just left her hanging after everything, even if she tried to push them away. there was no malivore or monsters. i don't mind acknowledging that other supernatural creatures exist within the same universe, especially from other cultures & lore, but the whole malivore & triad thing never really stuck with me. most of the dangers hope dealt with had to do with remaining enemies of her family, people desperate for her power, so on and so forth. ( such as the crazy ex stuck in a sleeping spell in the basement of the abattoir, hey! )

post series: i have two possible routes with this, where hope could go after graduation. one being an entirely domestic, normalish sort of verse where she gets to explore the peace she deserves; she resides mostly in new orleans, witching with freya, attending college for art, and sometimes traveling to see places in the world her father had always talked about. another...involves her activating her vampirism.

fully activated tribrid: in one way or another, hope is always fated to awaken the darkest side of herself, whether it's a self sacrificing choice or an accident, a run in the woods where werewolf hunters reside with poison-tipped arrows, a hand in hers as her heart stops so that she'll have the strength to face another threat. this brings her a heavier guilt and self-disgust than ever before, the initial struggle with her hunger, the similarity she sees in her own eyes to those of her father's. ( she loved him, she loved him, she loves him, but she never wanted to be him. ) eternally 19, eternally cursed. a possibility exists wherein she flips her humanity switch by accident ( she's so used to locking her grief away, she never had the opportunity to turn it off completely before ), and raises terror until her loved ones inevitably pull her back. a possible route from this verse extends to her forging a true alliance between the factions in new orleans, inviting vampires back in the right way and ensuring no one oversteps their bounds. after all, her mother used to say she might be the only one who could do it: the only one to understand all three of them. and she is her father's heir, though never had a personal interest in reigning. just...overseeing.

I think one of the biggest tragedies of Laios & Falin and their relationship is how much his actions impact her life. But like. Specifically how much they WOULDN’T impact her life as much if they weren’t both stuck in such a shitty abusive situation.

This part of the Falin-tries-makeup daydream hour comic is what got me thinking about it again because truly it just... it seems like such a like an offhand comment that I'm sure Laios didn't mean to be cruel or anything. That's just like. A little kid not thinking about what they are saying. ESPECIALLY when the kid in question is Laios.

But man they depended on each other SO much as kids. Too much. It really feels like they didn't have any other source of positive reinforcement, or anyone else to share themselves with. So of course an offhand comment like that has a huge impact on Falin.

Or this little bit from one of the flashbacks:

This tears me apart. Do you think it tears him apart to think about? I think it does. I think Laios holds every small failure to care for Falin against himself.

And then there's the Bigger stuff. The way that him coping with his own trauma ended up impacting her.

Like his interest in monsters. Like him going to find a ghost, and accidentally revealing Falin's magic to the whole village in the process.

Like him needing to leave. And leaving her behind.

He shaped her life so much, and he carries so much guilt for it. And again, there should have been other people there to help. The same things that made Laios need to leave home are the things that made his leaving so hard on Falin. She ate alone after that. She shouldn't have had to eat alone just because Laios wasn't there.

She was 9 when he left for school, and he was 11.

Nine. And Laios feels like he failed her because he didn't stand by her through this better. As an eleven year old.

Both of these kids deserved so much better from the world.

probably time for this story i guess but when i was a kid there was a summer that my brother was really into making smoothies and milkshakes. part of this was that we didn't have AC and couldn't afford to run fans all day so it was kind of important to get good at making Cool Down Concoctions.

we also had a patch of mint, and he had two impressionable little sisters who had the attitude of "fuck it, might as well."

at one point, for fun, this 16 year old boy with a dream in his eye and scientific fervor in heart just wanted to see how far one could push the idea of "vanilla mint smoothie". how much vanilla extract and how much mint can go into a blender before it truly is inedible.

the answer is 3 cups of vanilla extract, 1/2 cup milk alternative, and about 50 sprigs (not leaves, whole spring) of mint. add ice and the courage of a child. idk, it was summer and we were bored.

the word i would use to describe the feeling of drinking it would maybe be "violent" or perhaps, like. "triangular." my nose felt pristine. inhaling following the first sip was like trying to sculpt a new face. i was ensconced in a mesh of horror. it was something beyond taste. for years after, i assumed those commercials that said "this is how it feels to chew five gum" were referencing the exact experience of this singular viscous smoothie.

what's worse is that we knew our mother would hate that we wasted so much vanilla extract. so we had to make it worth it. we had to actually finish the drink. it wasn't "wasting" it if we actually drank it, right? we huddled around outside in the blistering sun, gagging and passing around a single green potion, shivering with disgust. each sip was transcendent, but in a sort of non-euclidean way. i think this is where i lost my binary gender. it eroded certain parts of me in an acidic gut ecology collapse.

here's the thing about love and trust: the next day my brother made a different shake, and i drank it without complaint. it's been like 15 years. he's now a genuinely skilled cook. sometimes one of the three of us will fuck up in the kitchen or find something horrible or make a terrible smoothie mistake and then we pass it to each other, single potion bottle, and we say try it it's delicious. it always smells disgusting. and then, cerimonious, we drink it together. because that's what family does.
