from July/two prime ministers ago. We'll have to see what happens under Sunak. It's still the tories involved though, and their record speaks for itself.
Update: Yep, based on this article that came out within the past 24 hours, it sounds like they still plan to get rid of it. With predicted terrible consequences.

see picture of giant artichoke restaurent building on tumblr.edu
reverse image search and find out it's in california (you live in californa)
find out there is an artichoke festival 2 hrs drive from you but you already missed it this year
plan to go next year
buy the hat (and book) from the online store because you love artichokes and are definitely going next year so it's ok to break the rule of "go to a location/event before buying a hat"
don't feel good and don't have the necessary Driving Endurance built up to make it there and back so you miss the festival :(
oh well there is next year
spend the year going on many 1hr and longer drives
your mom is in town for a few weeks and it overlaps with the festival, she also loves artichokes and instilled your love of artichokes in you
like two weeks ago she said she got a deal for a hotel near it so let's drive down saturady, have a nice dinner, then go on sunday
bring the hat you bought over a year ago and have a lovely time, eat artichokes steamed grilled fried cupcaked and taco'ed :)
don't eat the burgered meatstuffed or breadbowled artichokes because they would have been too filling for you to have eaten all the other artichokes
see a video about the history of artichokes in californai and it has a picture of the restaurant from tumblr!
look up restaurant and it's on the way home! barely out of the way at all!
wear the hat to take a picture with the restaurant!
???

Just wanted to thank you for taking the time and effort to put together the long climate/environment post, especially the online resources. I've wanted to replace the neglected/dead non-native plants at my place with native plants for months, but didn't know where to start my search for species except to walk around my local nature preserve trying to find something that isn't invasive lol. I'll be able to start (re)introducing native plants this month because of you :-)
Thank you for the kind words. I'm glad the post has been helpful and inspiring. If you'd like more directed guidance on native plants, I can probably point you in the right direction if you can give me a general area to work with (state would suffice!). In general, go for keystone species- those that are common in your area and support many kinds of insects- or pollinator favorites, or host plants for rare/imperiled butterflies/bees/moths.

went to the dermatologist yesterday and was very gently informed that i am White. I knew this already. Yes, Doc, I'll be good, Doc, I'll wear sunscreen when I'm outside for a long time on sunny days, Doc.
Apparently this is incorrect.
Every day. It's supposed to be every day. Literally if I go outside there's supposed to be sunscreen on me. I'm not even one of those extra pale white ppl that burn immediately??
Excuse me ye olde colonists, I've just been prescribed Vampire Life, doctor's orders, what the fuck did you leave your horrible, cold little continent for, clearly we have no business elsewhere.

So just to clarify — we are saying here that people who did not belong to the Church of England enjoyed equal rights in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England, Scotland, and Wales? (I have to assume we're only saying this about non-C-of-E Protestants.)
We are saying that being fined for not attending Anglican services was not religious oppression? We are saying that being excluded from holding government office unless you belong to the Church of England was not religious oppression? We are saying that people opposed to the state religion weren't targeted for anything? (Just checking: Are we also saying the Quakers weren't oppressed?)
The Puritans started oppressing other religions given any opportunity to do so, both in the colonies and also during the period in England when Oliver Cromwell and associates executed the king and took over. (Among other offenses: mass murder and suppression of Catholicism in Ireland.) Large parts of their philosophy seem aimed at feeling miserable and righteous all the time. I hate Puritanism.
But that does not mean that they weren't oppressed.
I'm not defending the Puritans here; I'm saying that you can condemn the Puritans without exonerating the early modern Church of England which very much was oppressing everyone who wouldn't follow the party line.

the adrenaline rush after talking to someone who gives you severe anxiety but the conversation went super well and was super helpful: unparalleled
#yes this is about my grad advisor#yes I knew he gave me anxiety before I joined his program#yes he has given me a huge number of stress dreams since taking ecology lab with him in undergrad#it's okay!!!! it's totally fine and facing your fears by forcing yourself to be in proximity to the stressful thing is like healthy and shit#right????#(he isn't creepy or whatever he just constantly seems disappointed in you lmao and it freaks me out 😅😂)#anyway I have been super worried about figuring out my grad project/thesis#and he basically just told me I don't even need a direction to head yet#I have time to figure it out. around august I need to have some idea of like lakes or rivers or streams#maybe an idea of if i want to do some kind of management or conservation question#what I'd like to work with. historical data. ecological catastrophe data. habitat data. how are invasive species affecting communities data.#and so on and so forth and then we can develop a question together that I can work on for the next two years#he just wants me to learn right now and he thinks by next year he wants me running LTEF which would be cool as fuck#and I am so here for#ANYWAY I FEEL SO MUCH BETTER#I actually was unable to sleep last night because I was so worried about this#was going 'maybe I should quit now cause I don't know anything and I will never know anything and idk what I'm doing'#and like 'this was a mistake and I'm letting everyone and myself down and I can't undo it and I moved and everything'#'and now I'm going to completely bomb and drop out and never get another job and I'll have to go live in the woods'#'and never speak to anyone ever again because I'm a failure'#BUT I HAVE NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT#YAYYYYYYYYYY#anxiety can eat my ass!!!! I can conquer any problem!!!!! nothing can stop me!!!!#(also the fact I held a whole conversation with him by myself with no one else around is something I am proud of)#(and by the end my heart wasn't even pounding or anything 😌)

Hi, there's a really good chance I'm imagining things, but isn't there a name/term for when we latch onto "cute"/marketable endangered species and that gives incentive to protect their habitat as well? Like when keeping one animal alive allows for the argument to be made to keep a different "uglier" animal alive, or put resources into protecting a plant species? I could swear there's a name for this but I can't find anything so I could also just be mixing it up with something
The term you're looking for is "Charismatic Megafauna" or and it works in two directions:
People are more likely to identify with a large mammal than say, an ecologically vital insect or slime mold, especially if it's something regarded as "cute" like Pandas or Orcas or Elephants. People give more of a shit about the enviornment and do what you ask if they give a shit about the animal in question.
Picking a Keystone Species at the Very Tippy Top of the food chain (Apex predators like Tigers and Orca), or that needs VAST amounts of space kept pristine (Pandas, Elephants) means that you also have to preserve THE ENTIRE FUCKING FOOD CHAIN UNDERNEATH IT, and by extension, the habitat all them critters live in. So signing a law to protect Penguins protects not just their land nesting sites but the ocean they hunt in and the fish they eat and this protects vastly more species than protecting The-Actually-Load-Bearing-Deep-Sea-Sponges would.
So if you were ever wondering "How come there's all these fundraisers for cute things like giraffes and gorillas? Where's the love for the ugly little guys like freshwater clams and earthworms?" the answer is "RIGHT BEHIND the big sexy poster animal. We sneak them in like hiding your dog's pills in cheese."

"England is celebrating the first pair of beaver kits born in the country since they were reintroduced back into the country’s north last year.
Landscape managers in England are beside themselves with surprise over the changes brought about by a single year of beaver residency at the Wallington Estate in Northumberland—with dams, mudflats, and ponds just appearing out of nowhere across the landscape.
Released into a 25-acre habitat on the estate last year, the four beavers at Wallington are part of a series of beaver returns that took place across the UK starting in 2021 in Dorset. Last year, GNN reported that Hasel and Chompy were released into the 925-acre Ewhurst Estate in Hampshire in January 2023, and the beavers that have now reproduced established their home in Wallington in July.
“Beavers are changing the landscape all the time, you don’t really know what is coming next and that probably freaks some people out,” said Paul Hewitt, the countryside manager for the trust at Wallington. “They are basically river anarchists.”
“This time last year I don’t think I fully knew what beavers did. Now I understand a lot more and it is a massive lightbulb moment. It is such a magical animal in terms of what it does.”
It’s believed that the only animal which alters the natural environment to the same extent as humans is the beaver. Their constant felling of trees to construct dams causes creeks to build up into pools that spill out during rainfall across the land, cutting numerous other small channels into the soil that distribute water in multiple directions.
Hewitt says that in Wallington this has translated to a frantic return of glorious wildlife like kingfishers, herons, and bats.
Recently the mature pair of beavers mated and produced a kit, though its sex is not yet known because beavers don’t have external genitalia.
These beaver reintroductions have led to a raft of beaver sightings around the country. Those at the National Trust working to rewild the beaver back into Great Britain hope the recovery of the landscape will convince authorities to permit further reintroductions to bigger areas."

i just... i don't have much to say, but i will say this.
i'm angry. i'm really fucking mad. but while i work on dealing with the anger and sadness and frustration that is bubbling within me, there's also a LOT of gratitude.
liam was a part of a group that became MAGIC. they were MAGIC. they were so much to so many people and he was a part of that. it's because of liam being a part of one direction that everything happened exactly how it did and i somehow ended up here, and i am SO thankful for that. it's because of one direction that i have some of the closest friends i've got in my life. it's because of one direction that i know as much about myself as i do and that i was able to be able to get through some of the hardest times of my life, and he was a part of that.
i want to remember him how i remember him on stage. i want to remember him smiling so big his eyes are mere slits and his mouth open wide laughing. i want to remember IT'S A SNAKE HABITAT TURN AROUND! and the sheer joy that he and the others brought me.
so thank you liam. i'm still mad, and sad, and frustrated, and feeling helpless in a lot of ways. but i'm also really fucking happy to have had felt the effects of the magic you brought into my life.
