From the September 18, 1950 feature story (66 years ago this week): SOUTH AFRICA and its PROBLEM: In a black land white rule and human liberty are clashing. This image opened the story with the following caption: “Gold miners Nos 1139 and 5122, both Mndaus, stand sweating in 95 degree heat of a tunnel in Johannesburg’s Robinson Deep Mine, more than a mile underground.” (Margaret Bourke-White—The LIFE Picture Collection/Getty Images) #thisweekinLIFE #LIFEmagazine #1950s

On Your Mind.  For Anna Julia Cooper.  Collage by Alexis Pauline Gumbs.
Today’s meditation comes from North Carolina’s own Sista Docta Anna Julia Cooper whose birthday was yesterday and whose inclusive and multilayered educational impact transformed her century.   Take a moment to be present to your own voice and the voices of those who are often silenced as we contemplate what it might mean for the world to hear “her,” voice filled with love.

September 1933: Enthused parade-goers thronging along Fifth Avenue had to be contained by policemen to keep the street clear. Starting at Washington Square and stretching to 72nd Street, the parade was in honor of the N.R.A. — that is, the National Recovery Administration, the New Deal initiative aimed at improving business practices by setting price controls, mandating minimum wages and limiting a work week’s hours, among other measures. “Preliminary reports reaching me indicate that the N.R.A. parade celebration in New York City next week will be an even greater success than was predicted originally by its most optimistic supporters,” President Roosevelt wrote in a telegram to one of the parade’s organizers. It was attended by more than 250,000 people. In 1935, the Supreme Court declared the N.R.A. unconstitutional. Photo: The New York Times

May 23, 1974: A kiss outside City Hall, where gay rights activists had gathered to show support for a gay rights bill up for a vote at the City Council. The anti-discrimination measure was defeated, 22 to 19, but the bill’s backers vowed to resubmit the following week, although they would “not press for action until after the November election.” It didn’t pass until 1986.
