When I was young

my mom would wash my hair

She would dig her nails into my scalp

Until my head throbbed and tears fell

As I grew, I began to wash my hair on my own

I would be so gentle and soft

Messaging my scalp lightly with the pads of my fingers

Thankful my mothers hands no longer scratched me.

But parts of my hair would remain dry and dirty

I'd come out of the shower and be scolded by my mother as she ran her fingers through my hair and cursed under her breath

Disappointment surrounded me as I put my head down and apologized

The next time I washed my own hair

I scrubbed and scrubbed just like my mother once did

Sobbing as my scalp bled and my fingers roughly messaged my roots

My mom would sit and apologize as she'd brush through my hair staring at my red scalp,

Telling me she'd never meant to hurt me.

I'm older now,

and I'd never be gentle with myself again.
