the sunshine court really put the original trilogy in a new light bc we finally see just. regular college students. they go to get boba. they have a cute gay apartment. they actually go to classes. and then we have jean, neil, andrew, kevin, and the rest of the foxes who are just Not Having a Normal Time between unresolved oodles of trauma, not a single stable home life in sight, oh also and the literal mafia. — their metric for being Okay is just,,, not helpful. but trying to picture jean just like— in my econ section. hanging out at someone’s bday party on a saturday in socal. my man holding a corona and having no idea what to do with his hands. i cannot.

Back on my annotated reread of TSC and thinking abt how Jean's reaction to Laila when he hits her isn't just about being touched unexpectedly.

It's because it's his neck.

It is specifically because it's 'something warm and wet against his injured neck'.

It's because it's literally happening in the middle of a conversation in which Cat just suggested Jean meet in person with Grayson.

Like as much as people can be upset he hit her or didn't immediately apologise (also tho like. Did we read the same book? It literally has it right there that apologising is not how this kinda thing is handled in the nest. Why would Jean think to do that here??) can you really be surprised that those circumstances triggered his fight response? Like really?

Adding the two things I noticed on my current reread.

Their family butler told Jeremy his brother was home and he left the house so fast he didn't even grab his keys in order to avoid a possible confrontation with him before 6am. He literally strands himself at a coffee shop instead of taking any chance of running into his brother who goes to Yale. He even says he could have grabbed his keys to go to Cat and Laila's and nap on the couch but instead within minutes of getting coffee from his butler he is out of the house and booking an Uber.

Then when Jeremy interacts with his sister he's doing everything he possibly can to placate her. He follows her while they’re talking all the way to her car where she makes him open her car door by just saying "door." Like that is a thing that has happened before and his sister is so pissed still years later that Jeremy without question practically becomes like a servant to her.

The coffee thing is interesting, especially since he literally has a travel mug, "enough espresso to see sound waves" and then Laila makes them more coffee. Like my guy, I love coffee but even that's a lot of caffeine!

am rereading the sunshine court and taking it slowly to see if i can find more details hinting at jeremy's backstory. instead what i've noticed is how much coffee jeremy drinks.

the morning after the usc vs psu game, he wakes up and receives a full travel mug of coffee at five in the morning, which he drinks on his way to a coffee shop, where he orders "Enough caffeine I'll see soundwaves" (p59), which is several espresso shots, before the clock has turned six. at seven he buys a pound of coffee beans and goes to cat's and laila's place, where laila proceeds to make more coffee for them.

Hey... Kevin is the center of AFTG, its soul, the metaphorical representation of the exy.

Do you realize that without Kevin, Neil wouldn't have been recruited? Do you realize that if Wymack wasn't Kevin's father, Kevin wouldn't have gone to the Foxes? He surely would have gone to the Trojans or not left The Nest at all.

But now... more importantly and the proof of because Nora had to write this new trilogy...

Do you realize that Kevin discovered his mother's letter revealing that Wymack is his father... with Jean?

Do you realize that Kevin left The Nest because Jean was there to distract Riko?

Do you realize that if Jean hadn't been there, Kevin wouldn't have gotten out of The Nest and everything else wouldn't have developed?

Jean indirectly pushed the original trilogy by carrying all the surrounding shit on his shoulders.

The steps the Foxes took to beat the Ravens? he got the worst of Riko. Kengo's death as Ichirou rose and Riko's increasingly violent reaction? He received it.

He deserved this trilogy. No one deserved it more than Jean.
