I'm so sick and tired of getting into shows and films that have a focal point on mental health, only for those pieces of media to completely overgeneralize, exaggerate, and demonize Borderline Personality Disorder.
I've been watching the show Gypsy that's been on Netflix for a couple years now. In the very first episode there's mention of the main character's former patient with BPD who's institutionalized, which was already stereotypical and a red flag. And now a few episodes later she's talking about how said patient became "so obsessed with her that they burned their family's house down and blamed it on her" and followed it up with " you k know, classic borderline."
That is not "classic borderline." And it's pissed me off so badly that I don't even know if I'll finish the show. I'm so fucking tired of people looking at my disorder as nothing but a bunch of lunatics who can't control themselves.
And I just think maybe creators should take some time to study the material they're portraying before labeling an entire group of people - who are already massively misunderstood and often targeted or not taken seriously because of a disorder they cannot control - as dangerous, "classically" crazy and codependent to the point of criminality.
This is a show about a therapist doing all manner of inappropriate things with people in her client's lives, by the way. Can't wait to see what else they'll try to demonize about this "classic borderline case."

Hey Scott!
Love you and your art tutorials. Really a big fan, you got me into painting again when I couldn't get out of bed due to depression. I love watercolor!
You being an idol of mine, I checked out your movie, Animal Crackers.... I don't know if you intended it to be that way... but I did feel uncomfortable over your representation of Roma people. As a Spanish partial Romani myself I was just surprised to see those stereotypes of mystic, over-sexualised fortune tellers. We have so much more in our culture! I'm pretty young myself but even at the time this movie came out I understood it wasn't the best take.
I'm not here to critique you. But I did use to see you as a role model. I try to separate that from the rest of the movie, and your past art from you as a person but its hard because otherwise, I know you are in favor of good representation. Could you please address this? Use it as an opportunity for growth? Acknowledge it used a slur?
I just want my rose tinted glasses back.
Love, Yair.
Hi Yair! Thank you so much for the lovely message. I'm so happy my videos helped you in any way. Regarding Animal Crackers. Thank you for asking. When I wrote the graphic novel for my 5 year olds back in 2008... the term "Gypsy" was commonly used for "wanderers with a hint of magic" in books, tv, and movies and it wasn't considered a derogatory term for Roma people. Not generally. I thought this to be true when I wrote the script in 2011. I thought this to be true when I made the film in 2014.
But when the film came out... I started to see comments on twitter and instagram and facebook with people calling the film "racist" for using the term Gypsy so much.
It was at this time in the fall of 2020 that I learned of the significance of this word and how it was used as a derogatory term for the Roma people. While it was not done intentionally, I take full responsibility for this. I wrote it. I had the actors use the words. I was the one who put it in the movie. The blame is completely on me and my ignorance. And I am truly sorry. Shortly after this, I reached out to the European Roma Rights Centre and got on a call with them and we discussed the history of the Roma people and how (if I get a chance to make a sequel) I can educate the world about the Roma people and how hurtful the term "Gypsy" is to them. I can't undo any harm I may have caused in my movie, but, hopefully, I can make some amends with a sequel, working with the European Roma Rights Centre to portray the Roma people in a positive light, and educating people on how harmful stereotypes can be.
Thanks again for asking
Sending Big Hugs from the Hobbit Hole. ♥♥♥

Gypsy: primeira temporada (2017)

Fictitious and chillingly real, the story of Gita from Byala Gora touches on a number of acute social themes: internalised Antigypsyism vs taking pride in your Romani roots; patriarchy vs matriarchy; tradition vs modern; true love vs arranged marriage; majority vs minority; justice for Roma vs justice for non-Roma...all is there and all is shown true the eyes of Gita, who is Romani but she only wants to be herself opposite to all the expectations from her own and from the others. Following her heart above all, Gita goes against all "norms" about what a Romani girl should be like. A very strong script, and very strong actors. I am really happy with the series. Many could easily say that "Infamia" reaffirms stereotypes and clichés. But let us ask ourselves first: Where's the invisible line between "good" and "bad" depiction? Of all Roma? Gita is a fiction. And it's not. Roma communities are not heterogeneous. Some Roma are more traditional, and some are more modernised. I fully saw and recognised the world of Gita as my own. Yes, arranged marriages, jobs we cannot take pride in and poverty are an everyday occurrence for many Roma today. There's no offense in showing that. Offense would be to reject it, to pretend that it is not there, to say that...
this is not Romani.
In one of the last scenes Gita visits her grandmother and the old woman through tears tells her: "Na san amari Gita!". ( You are not ours, Gita!)
And Gita, like many other young Roma, is ours: in between traditional and contemporary, between Roma and Gadzhe, between "Gypsy" and "Infamia".
I recommend you to watch the series: critically, with empathy and with a tought for all Gitas and Tareks that are out there and need the courage and support!

I Am Not Okay With This (2020)
Teenage Bounty Hunters (2020)
First Kill (2022)

Adding to my earlier post about Jess and Rory never sneaking around... I forgot the best example!
"Kid Code."
Jess makes this announcement to both of their guardians:
Netflix is really awesome with subtitles.
Oh, did you mean Gypsy's? The only mechanic in town? The shop that's located approximately 30 feet away from your uncle's diner?
Rory immediately follows him, prompting Lorelai to make this observation:
You mean the agreed upon location that Jess just told you about? The place that is - again - so close to Luke's diner that you can probably see it through the window right now? Is that Kid Code, or is that a heads up that these two goofs plan to make out at Gypsy's shop, exactly where Jess said he was gonna be?
Anyway. These two dorks walk DIRECTLY to the not-at-all-secret location, where they make out against a gas pump. The sexiest of all romance locations.
Look at how giddy they are to be standing next to each other! My heart.
I like to think that Luke instantly found them, because again: Jess told them where they were going, and it was like 14 steps away from Luke's diner... but as soon as Luke saw them awkwardly mooning over each other, he decided to let them have a moment. Because ultimately, Luke is a huge Literati shipper.

10 films on Palestine that everyone should watch
Explore the tales of Palestinians who have suffered atrocities at the hands of Israeli occupation forces for 75 long years.
ith the Gaza invasion dominating headlines around the world and Israel carpet bombing the Gaza strip, killing scores of civilians, we have complied a list of films that highlight the plight of Palestinians so that people remember the human stories behind the statistics.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in a Security Council meeting held on October 24 to discuss the Middle East situation, asserted, “It is important to also recognise the attacks by Hamas did not happen in a vacuum. The Palestinian people have been subjected to 56 years of suffocating occupation. They have seen their land steadily devoured by settlements and plagued by violence; their economy stifled; their people displaced and their homes demolished.”
His powerful statement rings true as Palestinians have been suffering under the apartheid rule of Israel for far too long. Palestinian people have tried various ways to raise their voices and tell the world about Israel’s atrocities, which have been ongoing since the Nakba in 1948. One of the most successful methods has been telling real stories through films, dramas, and documentaries.
Here are 10 films that depict how the people of Palestine have suffered for the past 75 years.
Farha (2021)
The film depicts the true story of a Palestinian girl who survived the Nakba of 1948, when thousands of Palestinians were expelled from their homeland. The hopeful young girl who wanted to study in the city watched silently from the pantry of her house while Israeli forces ethnically cleansed her neighbours and other fellow countrymen slaughtered by them.
The movie, directed by Hassiba Freiha and Kenton Oxley, is available on Netflix.
Tale of the Three Jewels (1995)
Set in contemporary Gaza, the movie is the story of a Palestinian boy, Yusef, who becomes entranced with a beautiful Gypsy girl. The children explore nature, mysticism, and their future while learning to live amid the surrounding brutality. To escape, Yusef sets off on a journey to the North American dreamworld with his blind neighbour.
Directed by Michel Khleifi, the movie is available to watch online on various sites.
Children of Shatalia (1998)
Farah, age 11, and Issa, age 12, are two streetwise children living in Beirut’s Palestinian Shatila refugee camp, located in the city’s “belt of misery.” The centre is home to 15,000 Palestinians and Lebanese who share a common experience of displacement, unemployment, and poverty. The two children are given video cameras; they use their imaginations and creativity to come to terms with the realities of growing up in a refugee camp that has survived massacre, siege, and starvation.
Directed by Mai Masri, the movie is available on Netflix.
Omar (2013)
Omar is a young Palestinian man living in Israeli-occupied West Bank where he must navigate a steep separation wall and checkpoints to visit his friends. Omar sees his horizons diminish after he carries out a sniper attack with his two childhood buddies. He’s captured, imprisoned, tortured, and coerced into becoming an informer for the Israelis but finds he’s not the only traitor.
Directed by Hany Abu-Assad, the second film from the Palestinian territories to be nominated for an Academy Award is available on Netflix.
Pomegranates and Myrrh (2009)
The film tells the story of a Palestinian woman who uses Dabke (a traditional folk dance) to cope with the loss of her husband, who is taken away by Israeli authorities. The story talks about the political climate of Palestine and the internal and external sufferings of Palestinians.
Directed by Najwa Najjar, the movie is available on Netflix.
Eyes of a Thief (2014)
The film’s central plot-line is a father’s search for his daughter. As he searches, he not only has to fight against the lack of freedom under occupation but also against social boundaries. Having served a 10-year prison sentence for an attack on Israeli border soldiers, Tarek sets out to find his daughter Malak. When he eventually finds her in Nablus, however, he discovers that she has been adopted. He can’t reveal himself publicly as her father, so he takes a job nearby working as an engineer for the official in charge of water at the Palestinian National Authority to be able to approach her in secret.
Directed by Najwa Najjar, the film is available on Netflix.
The Time That Remains (2009)
This semi-autobiographical film tells the story of a father who fought in the 1948 war and chose to stay back when Israelis took over. It depicts the life of Palestinians living as a minority on their own land. The film is divided into four parts.
Directed by Elia Suleiman, The Time That Remains is available for streaming on Apple TV.
3000 Nights (2015)
The film illustrates the plight of political prisoners in Israel. Set in 1980, Nablus, 3000 Nights follows a newly-married school teacher, Layal, whose crime is giving a ride to a teenage boy who is accused of executing a lethal attack on a military checkpoint. Layal is sentenced to eight years in prison, where she spends her pregnancy and gives birth to a boy.
Directed by Mai Masri, the film is available on Netflix.
The Present (2020)
A father-daughter duo living along the Palestine border sets out to buy a fridge. The pair has to cross the checkpoint, segregated road, and armed soldiers, which involves a stringent checking process to cross the border. The movie depicts the life of Palestinians who can’t do basic daily routine things without facing harassment by IDF soldiers.
Co-written and directed by Farah Nabulsi, the BAFTA Award-winning film is available on Netflix.
When I Saw You (2012)
This story focuses on the heartache of a young boy, Tarek, who wants his father and his state back. He is displaced in a grim camp, with no one to turn to, and proceeds on a journey to turn his life around.
Directed by Annemarie Jacir, the movie is available on Netflix.
If you are interested in the historical context of the Israel-Palestine conflict, take a look at this list compiled by Al-Jazeera.
As Israeli forces bomb Gaza relentlessly to ‘punish’ Hamas, killing thousands of innocent Palestinians, it is important to remember their stories.
