open ;; 18+ only It had been watching this one for a while. Traipsing through the underdark with a burning brand - hunting wasn't it's style, after all. But from the ceiling of the cave where it rested, it was easy enough to keep track of this flare of light.
And it knew, yes, it knew quite well that this creature was getting closer and closer to one of it's web traps. It never strayed too far from it's nest when it hunted, but this was a particularly sweet spot, just in range of a natural sussur flower bloom. All it would take would be a foot to catch on the near invisible guywires, and then - it would fall into a web. Patience, though. It would not do to be sighted.

You rode out a HURRICANE in a TENT after climbing a MOUNTAIN? And you don't talk about this all the time? Was it traumatic? Or are you just tired of reciting a litany of dramatic victories over mother nature?
Ironically it wasn’t that big of a deal.  I knew it was coming and intentionally climbed the mountain to get out of town rather than risk getting stuck in town with everyone else and then being bunched into a big group on the trail when we finally left.
Uh…this was during my AT thru-hike, I should mention, or else the above comment looks like total lunacy.
In any case, I found a perfect tent-site near the summit, just down from the regular shelter.  It was a bowl-shaped area with good drainage that protected me from the worst of the winds.  I made sure my guywires were tied to particularly stout trees, pulled the rainfly as tight as I could so the corners were into the wind so it would blow over instead of up under, and then hunkered down.
It blew pretty hard, but other than the tent quivering alarmingly it turned out just fine.  Once I convinced myself that the tent wasn’t going to collapse, I actually slept pretty soundly.  Near-permanent physical exhaustion from five months of hiking will do that to you ;)
The local college hiking club were camped nearby in a more flat open area, and they were apparently utterly miserable the entire night, all of them ending up being completely soaked and their gear scattered.

SHELBURNE – One-on-one talks with fellow amateur radio operators as far away as Moscow are now firmly on the horizon for a Shelburne man.
The erection of two antenna towers on Zachary Mangenello’s rural property on Dorset Street — a source of contention with his neighbors for at least a year — was approved by the Telecommunications Review Board this week.
On paper, and later, in balloon tests that attempted to approximate the towers’ altitude, the structures struck some folks as too tall for the neighborhood.
Radio towers downsized
Compromises were struck along the way. The new structures will be measurably less of an eyesore. Originally conceived at 70 feet, Mangenello’s ham radio project is getting off the ground with slim, guywire-supported towers that extend up 40 and 60 feet…..READ MORE

A few weeks ago I found a criminally good sale on a one man tent, and I brought it to Texas with me to do a test-pitch in my parents' backyard. Turns out driving stakes into Texas hardpan is tough on guywire tension, but I think for an initial try it went pretty well.

NEW YORK | How AP photographed George H.W. Bush lying in state
NEW YORK | How AP photographed George H.W. Bush lying in state
NEW YORK — It’s a striking perspective of a powerful moment: the arrival of the flag-draped casket of former President George H.W. Bush in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda, surrounded by family members and dignitaries, captured from a dizzying height near the top of the dome.
The shot was made possible by a guywire, antennae, collaboration with the Architect of the Capitol and months of negotiations…

@twisted-but-pretty
It should have been a textbook dive. They’d done a hundred of them before, just like it – less than 60 feet of water, mild current, good visibility and few obstructions, a dive that should have gone off without a hitch. Guy knew exactly what they were looking for and where it was most likely to be found; the wreck had been mapped out carefully using the ROV and he and Killian had gone over the details no less than a dozen times in preparation. It should have been a walk in the park…and to begin with, it had been.
But once they were at the bottom, it became readily apparent that what was thought to be one wreck laid out neatly along a sandy bank was, in fact, two wrecks that had merged into one – the frame of the cruiser had come to rest almost tucked inside the decaying hull of the warship so that the twisted hulks were indistinguishable from one another, making it all but impossible to continue to search the ships without putting them both at risk – there was no rhyme or reason to the mess of steel before them and to press on with the dive would be a death wish.
The only logical choice would be to abort, to send the ROV back down and study the wrecks further, and that was what Guy was about to do. But just as he caught Killian’s eye there was the unmistakable sound of twisting, rending metal, audible even at the depth they were diving, and before Guy could draw a breath one of the stacks that had been left intact above the smaller vessel broke free, corrosion weakening its base over the decades since it had come to rest at the bottom. It tipped, the mass of it falling toward them before either man could react, and in a desperate effort to get them both out of its way, Guy shoved at Killian as a thousand pound cylinder of metal came crashing down, trailing the guywires that had held it in place for over 75 years in a tangled knot of steel cables.
What might otherwise have been a direct hit that would have likely killed them both was reduced to a glancing blow to Guy’s arm, but it struck Killian’s shoulder hard enough to send him reeling. Guy watched in horror as the younger man was pushed down by the weight of the stack, clearly stunned by the blow - if not knocked out altogether.
Lunging desperately, cursing the cumbersome weight of his dive tanks as he reached out to grab Killian, Guy felt the other man’s wetsuit slip through his grasp as he scrabbled to catch him, the slick material impossible to hold. In a last ditch effort his fingers closed around a fist full of hair, using the leverage to get his other hand around Killian’s arm, his grip almost bruising in his desperation to hold on to the younger man. Using all of his strength, Guy pulled at his partner, managing to haul him out of the way of the stack as it landed on the bottom, sending great plumes of sediment and silt billowing up around them. But as visibility was reduced to nothing and Guy struggled to keep his hold on Killian, the sickening reality of their situation dawned on him.
They were caught in the tangled web of cables that had followed the stack down, the wires twisted around them and caught in their gear…and he couldn’t see his own hand in front of his face.
They were fucked.
So much for a textbook dive.
He had been dubious to begin with - if there was one thing he had learned from years on the job it was that nothing ever turned out quite like you expected it to. The older man’s confidence however was catching, the information gathered from the ROV promising, and with each passing day Killian had felt his excitement mounting. The risk, the exhilaration at discovering something no one else had laid eyes on in centuries ... those were the things he had missed the most while seeking retirement.
Under the silent watch of his first mate ( whose eyes said he disapproved even if his words didn’t) the Irishman had prepared, shooting his companion a jaunty wink as he dropped into the water, determined (as he was in all things) to be first. The unease he had so painstakingly fought down over the weeks of planning began to make itself known once more as they descended into what could only be described as nearly impossible visibility, only increasing its fervor as the puzzle like wreckage came into view.
Bloody hell.
Steeling himself lest he appear the coward he had caught Guy’s eye, unsure of whether or not the older man wanted to press forward but certain in the knowledge that if he did -- Killian would follow. Brows furrowed together in a frown as he bolstered his resolve, shifting in a gesture to urge the other man forward that was cut off abruptly as his fellow diver gave him a shove. He had just enough time to register the danger, eyes widening in alarm as the instinct to bloody move kicked in - effort brought to a resounding halt at the force of steel slamming into his shoulder.
His vision blackened, stars and shapes lighting up his brain in patterns that the Irishman assumed had only ever existed in cartoons. He was dimly aware of fingers scrabbling against the fabric of his wetsuit, their brushing gaze tickling the inside of his arms only to grab forcefully at his hair. The sting was enough to rouse him and the Irishman gave a shake of his head, fighting the rise of panic that threatened to spill forth. He had no idea where he was, where they were .. and the only thing keeping him from losing his mind was the still forceful grip of Guy’s hand on his arm.
The pain in his shoulder left no doubt that he was injured and lips moved in a grimace, muscles rolling it gingerly as the fingers of his other hand gripped his partner’s arm, doing his best to convey that he was okay.
Well ... as okay as anyone in their situation could be.
Blue eyes furrowed as they peered into the darkness and Killian shook his head in exasperation ... the sediment clouding the water was so thick that he could barely even see his fellow diver next to him. Questing fingers reached behind him, running over the wires wrapped around his oxygen tank and moving to test Guy’s own.
Fucking hell. He loved the sea... but he would be damned before he died there.
Squeezing Guy’s arm he nodded, gesturing to their tanks and the wires wound round them. If they could get free of them ... if the wires weren’t anywhere else ... they might be able to make their way to the surface.
It’d be a hell of a trip though.
