I hope it. In Austria it's completely legal to buy a hunting rifle after a psychological evaluation and with some training to own semiautomatic weapons and handguns with a limit of 5 that is expendable and even to carry it with you outside your property with a permit. But the moment you shoot at someone and just harm him, you are fucked. The only possibility where it wouldn't end with jail time is when the person was about to kill you and even that doesn't allow killing. And that's good.

No, it's good because people don't use their guns and try to hide and wait for the police. You can hide in your home and nearly nobody gets a permit to carry it outside, so you wouldn't have it with you outside anyways. So most people carry peperspray, tasers and such with them outside if they feel unsafe.
