Stop Re-Dubbing Classic Anime!
I recently started rewatching a “remastered” anime classic that I grew up with – Gundam SEED.  It was a little flawed, and basically a remake of the original series, but it was still fun.  However, there was just one little fly in the ointment – the dub.  I watch my anime dubbed.  Not ashamed about that.  I refuse to read an entire series.  For some of my favorite classic anime, that makes it…

Voice headcannon idea if Storm Hawks ever gets redubbed
Sam Vincent (Who was both Aerrow and Dark Ace, Athrun Zala from Gundam SEED and Martin Mystery) as Lightning Strike
I figured i'd take a page off of Yashahime's dub when they brought back Inuyasha's dub voice actors for that anime.
So i figured why not have Sam as Lightning Strike since it fits and plus thanks to the headcannon voices i gave Ace and Aerrow, we don't have to worry about having Sam go back and forth if i did reprisals in this headcannon for the main protags.
How will this work you ask since we see a little of him. Simple, in the headcannon i envisioned Origins would be a two parter that would have Lightning Strike and the rest of the OG Storm Hawks appear until the battle on Cyclonia happens close to the end of p1 in said headcannon two parter. ^^

I now believe that SEED’s re-dub actors/staff are Gungans. Good frigging Lord.
No wonder this shit was released in 2020.

Gundam SEED redub is going to be worse than I originally imagined
So I came upon this video where the (it pains me to write this) new VAs for Athrun and Nicol and this other guy were live streaming themselves playing DWG. A few things they revealed:
1) The pronunciation of character names will be changed
It’s really so cringey...like they’re really trying to mimic the Japanese pronunciations: Nih-ko-l (new) vs Nickel (old). Ya-mo-to (new) vs Yah-ma-to. It was so bad, they even said Lacus’ name weirdly. It sounds great in Japanese (with their distinct tones and inflections), but I don’t know how they expect Americans to replicate the same thing for an English dub without sounding like foreigners...come on...make the dub your own don’t do this dub as if it were the Japanese voices speaking English...
2) Athrun’s and Nicol’s new voices definitely do not fit!
This new dub is going to be sooo cringey

“No matter how far we are, even if we never see each other again, every one of us is walking forward, trying to reach the light. We must keep walking. In my heart, i believe that is our duty for the family members who gave their lives in the hopes that we would find happiness. [...] Even if it will be forgotten with the passage of time, I love this world that the members of Tekkadan made for us. I love this world, this beautiful world that you left for us.”
-          Kudelia Aina Bernstein, Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans (Ep. 50)
The Toonami Trending Rundown for April 28-29, 2018. The Tekkadan have one last bow as this installment of the Gundam franchise in Iron Blooded Orphans comes to a close. Meanwhile, among other great moments, Goku, Vegeta, and Trunks have another round against Zamazu and Black in their so called “Divine Justice” crusade, while Gon goes dating with Palm, and Asta and co. meets the Wizard King as well as Noelle’s abusive family.
In terms of trending, the droughts would continue through this week, as #Toonami would be the only thing that trended on both Twitter in the US and Tumblr.
Tumblr media
This week, Toonami showcased the trailer for the long awaited television debut of My Hero Academia, which premieres this Saturday at 11:30pm Eastern, which you can see below. It has also been confirmed that FLCL will be staying at midnight through the world premiere of season 2 as Toonami has opted to have MHA follow DBZ in back to back timeslots perhaps to give better ratings synergy as both are the two hottest Shonen Jump franchises right now. Similarly, as Black Clover gels well with Naruto so to speak, it will switch places with Hunter x Hunter, as the former will move to 1:30, while HxH moves up to 1am.

Toonami also showcased a behind the scenes interview with several of the FLCL creators. An extended version of the interview that was shown on tv was released on their Facebook page.

In Attack on Titan news, Pony Canyon and WIT studios have released a new trailer for the upcoming third season, with the announcement that the new season will premiere in Japan on July 22. FUNimation has announced that they do plan on simulcasting the new season. No word yet on they plan on creating a simuldub and airing the new season on Toonami as of now.
And to commemorate Cowboy Bebop's 20th anniversary, FUNimation has decided to create not 1, not 2, but 3 different 20th Anniversary Collector’s Editions for fans to pre-order within the next month. There is a catch, as a specific collector’s edition must have at least 1,000 pre-orders in order for it to be manufactured, and if it doesn’t, you get refunded. To see the options and make a preorder if you’re interested, check out funi.to/bebop20 for more information.

The Gundam franchise has been a staple for the better cartoon show throughout its history, with entries achieving varying degrees of success back during the previous Golden Age for Toonami in the early 2000’s. Despite heavy requests to see Gundam’s return, fans would have to wait awhile for Gundam’s return, due to the closure of Bandai Entertainment and Sunrise’s realignment of strategy for the North American market, following Toonami’s revival. Gundam’s return did eventually came, as Sunrise would send Toonami their then most recent TV hit in Iron Blooded Orphans.
While IBO’s reception wasn’t as big as say Wing, the show still had some good reception from Toonami fans, and would lead to the airing of Gundam Unicorn during IBO’s offseason in early 2017, and during Anime Expo 2017, Toonami and Sunrise announced that Iron Blooded Orphans would indeed continue, later announcing the premiere of season 2 on October 7.
25 additional weeks of the Tekkadan’s quest on Gjallarhorn and Martian reform, and now we can say that the “Post Disaster” era is in the books. During season 2’s run, #GundamIBO successfully trended in some capacity with the exception of week 23, including in the US for the first 21 weeks. On the other hand, Gundam was not able to produce a character or in-show content trend.
Tumblr media
Sunrise has been hard at work releasing Blu-ray and DVD re-releases of Gundam classics including G Gundam and Gundam Wing, as well as doing a remaster and redub of the Gundam Seed series, as well as releasing other modern installments including Thunderbolt and Build Fighters, so for those craving more Gundam, feel free to check those out. Whether Toonami will bring in one of these classics or an upcoming installment down the line, we will see, but given Toonami’s history with this franchise, I’m pretty confident we’ll see the next installment sooner or later.
Tumblr media
Tune in Saturday as My Hero Academia makes its long awaited debut on the better cartoon show, among other great moments. Until next week, thanks for the memories, Tekkadan, and stay gold.

You know the even stupider thing about them redubbing Gundam Seed and Seed Destiny is that
Even though Gundam Seed as a show is bad or at least not as good as other Gundam shows
THE DUB WAS COMPLETELY FINE
THE DUB WASN’T EVEN REMOTELY BAD
IT DOESN’T REQUIRE A REDUB AT ALL!

Heard about the Gundam SEED redub today and went ahead and watched like 28 episodes of the sub on Hulu in an all day marathon so... That happened. I still have the same ships. I apparently have Feelings about them and yell at characters a lot. Not an episode goes by where I don't call Flay a bitch. She's even worse now that I'm older. My god. She's horrible. I might be able to finish tomorrow? But Hulu doesn't automatically skip the intro. Which is okay because I love all of them (and now I'm up to Believe which is a FANTASTIC song) but that's also minutes that could be trimmed. I don't need to know what's going to happen or what just happened. IM MARATHONING. Also my playlists are going to get another surge of anime songs, I know it.

// It’s dubious dub Wednesday over on the Nozomi Twitter...
I just had to pause it at 1:41 because Nicol yells “DIRKA” instead of ‘Dearka’ and I am deceased.
Oh lawd he did it again.
Is that how it’s going to be for the whole dub?
@dearkaelsman ready your axe.

Thoughts on Gundam Seed and Gundam Seed Destiny being redubbed for its HD Remaster release by the cast that dubbed Gundam: IBO (one of the recently made Gundam series out today)?
I thought the Vancouver cast did an excellent job on the original shows' dubs.

I know that a lot of people (both CE and especially non CE and non Gundam passerbys) are probably looking at our ranting and wondering why we hate this redub. And like... I just want to make it clear, especially to potential new watchers that may think we’re nuts for having issue with the dub, we’re not angry with it just to be mean or spiteful. We’re disappointed. Ocean’s dub wasn’t god tier, but it meant a lot to western fans like us, and instead of polishing it, it rolled around in mud.
//THIS.
For me, SEED - in its original English dub glory - is why I was friends with the people I was in high school. It’s why I’m friends with the people I am now. It was the anime that first caused me to look up the voices behind characters, and the show that facilitated my learning about anime conventions, and the realm of RPing.
It (as well as discovering how much I enjoyed shooting hockey) heavily influenced why I went into photojournalism.
So the announcement of the re-dub, and now hearing it, kind of felt like a personal attack on my teenage self, given the show is really close to my heart. It sounds silly, but in a lot of ways it has contributed and been part of a foundation of the person I have become.
I know those of us expressing being upset about the re-dub/reflub aren’t attacking for the sake of being mean to the new cast, or out of spite. The actors involved have done a lot of good work on other projects, especially video games - I really enjoy Max Mittelman (redub Kira) as Ryuji in P5 and he’s probably my favourite character. I like Cassandra Lee Morris (redub Miriallia) as Morgana. Having met some of these voice actors, I can say I really like them personally, and love that we’re in an era where they can communicate with fans and show that they, too, are fans of the shows they work on, and I respect them for that.
I can respect that the original SEED dub may only be available in final mix form, and couldn’t be adjusted for the HD Remaster. I understand there are bidding processes, and the distribution company, Nozomi, that bought the rights to distribute the remaster, made the choice to go about redubbing it the way they did, likely because there is some legislation in place where “American” projects must have “American products” used (this caused some animosity between then-Prime Minister Stephen Harper and then-President Barack Obama on a port project in B.C. that an American company was awarded the contract for. Obama would not allow Canadian materials or workers on the project, despite it taking place in Canada and it was all really messed up because of bureaucratic red tape).
I am, however, deeply disappointed that the product we’re getting for SEED, as you said, isn’t an improvement to the original, or polishing, it’s a complete bastardization of the original, and there’s no excuse for it.
SEED is not a simulcast. They recorded this project in 2017, weeks after they announced the re-dub cast. They’ve had over two years with this, so with them casting “big name” L.A. -based voice actors, it makes it look like they defaulted to the simulcast process, and were lazy with the project and didn’t put a lot of effort into the casting, the research of the show, or the show itself.
I’m hugely disappointed that the director chosen has a penchant for not doing research or understanding what she’s involved with as a voice actor, and was given SEED to work on for her directorial debut. I hoped she  would prove me wrong and that she’d take extra care with the project as director, but from what I’ve seen so far, she hasn’t.
She still has yet to acknowledge the original Ocean dub. The American “main” DBZ cast has NEVER shied away from acknowledging there was a Canadian dub. Kyle Hebert even credited Brad Swaile’s Gohan as being the first Gohan he ever heard, and that he incorporated some of his mannerisms into his performance.
Carrie Keranen (and granted, I haven’t checked since they were recording the project because she is the one Voice Actor I actually have a personal problem with so her Twitter makes me very upset) has flagrantly dismissed what was in that original dub, and why? Given how other redub projects have gone, it makes it look like she either wants to ignore the fact it exists as to not give it publicity, or looks down on it, and thought she could do better without putting the work into it that she should have.
She allowed script changes that ruined the integrity of the characters - allowing someone to portray Miriallia as a 10-year-old boy and say “fricken” like she actually is a 10 year old punk kid, modernizing Cagalli (she’s a princess, she shouldn’t talk entirely like a preteen girl at the mall, even if she had a penchant for running away), and stripping Kira of his attitude to be more...bland? In all honestly, she enabled a lack of effort and emotion in the scenes they’ve posted thus far.
She allowed liberties to be taken on the English language that were not taken in the original with no good explanation. This is seen in the pronunciation of Nicol, Tolle, Dearka’s names, the weird emphasis on Archangel, Gammow.
I’m deeply disappointed that she allowed/changed Dearka’s name to a racial slur, even if it’s one that only “white people” would consider a slur. Rather than being sensitive to how a choice of words can affect those around us, this decision actually perpetuates racism against Middle Eastern people, as if there’s not enough of that already. It also creates a divide between the longtime die-hard fans of Gundam SEED, and the new ones with pronunciation (and this has happened with other redub projects where fans have been lectured the “new” way is the “right” way to say things even when it’s not), ESPECIALLY if a movie comes out now, which will make officially make her cast the “main” English cast, and everything the old cast did will essentially be erased from the collective fandom mind.
As a Canadian, I’m also disappointed at what redubbing one of the larger anime projects to come through Ocean/Vancouver means for the voice industry here.I’m hugely concerned, and I have been for some time for my favourite voice actors, and it’s easier to express this concern with regards to a specific project, than just in general.
It’s hard to know that B.C. is becoming the “Silicon Valley of the North,” and animation studios here are doing exceptional work (Into the SpiderVerse was done in Vancouver, The Dragon Prince is animated in Vancouver/Kelowna, the new Magic the Gathering series will be animated by the same studio, they’ve done a ton of work for Disney, Cartoon Network, DreamWorks etc.), and yet our voice actors are being forced to move, take up side jobs/new careers, when they should be voicing those projects, in favour of L.A. based dubbers who sadly don’t seem to put the effort into their projects that B.C. was able to.
They had an opportunity to make the redub decent, and they squandered it, and they’re really overselling the idea that in a digital age people weren’t already aware of SEED. The only people who will watching it “fresh” now are the type that are obsessive about specific voice actors and would worship the ground they walked on, rather than really enjoy a show for the show’s own merit.
And given what they’re doing to it in this dub, they’re going to actually make more people hate the series than already do.

//So this one dude on the Nozomi Entertainment page keeps responding to people with “I’m borrowing this comment from a friend - how much of the Ocean dub cast is still in the business” for SEED, insinuating they’re not working anymore like they don’t deserve to be working.
So I started to list who all is still in the business and then decided it was easier to list who may need to be recast in a world where the project went back to Ocean instead of NYAV Post. It’s mostly speculation - some may have returned to their roles, and some active actors may have had conflicts, but I thought it was interesting.
Generally, these actors are side characters that I wouldn’t be offended if they were recast, or would understand them being recast. I would definitely have preferred an attempt at not recasting everyone, but acknowledge that if one dubbing company/studio gets the project of course they’re going to give it to their own people.
Again, this is ideal world stuff, and I haven’t gone into Destiny, but here’s who may have been needed to be recast if the SEED redub went back to Vancouver:
Miguel - Tony Sampson. Left the voice industry to work in the oilfield. As a proud Albertan, I salute him and the work he does.
Cagalli - Vanessa Morley. The only main character on the list. She may still act on the side, but hasn’t had credits in awhile and was studying nursing when she voiced Cagalli. In these difficult times, I definitely salute her.
Nicol - Gabe Khouth. I hate putting him here. At the time of recording the re-dub, he was very much still alive and active. But unfortunately, he died in the summer due to heart complications while riding his bike. RIP. For him, I may cosplay Nicol at a con in the future.
Sai - Bill Switzer. This dude is almost real life Sai. Last I heard he was working in Yellowknife for Aurora Geosciences, and is a "freelance web designer/3D modeler motorcycle/small engine mechanic and as a general handyman."  Wild stuff. I’m impressed.
Kuzzey - Keith William Miller. SEED was basically one of his only voice credits. Hasn’t worked in credited roles since as far as I can tell.
Chief Murdoch - Ward Perry. This guy had some mondo roles in his career, but hasn’t done a voice role since Death Note.
Romero Pal - Brendan Van Wijk. Only voiced Romero Pal. Once of those one-off voice roles.
Arnold Neumann - Phil Pacaud. Basically his only voice role. However, he is highly active in the film industry in Vancouver as a location manager and has some big projects he’s been apart of, including Once Upon a Time and Smallville.
Everyone else in SEED is still active, from the druggies and Astray girls, to Patrick Zala and all the background characters the Dobson brothers and Scott McNeill voiced.

For people that shit on the original Gundam SEED voice cast
But are all head over heals for The Dragon Prince and Runaan - because I’ve seen you on Twitter....
Arthur Trine is voiced by the Jonathan Holmes, the same guy that voices Runaan. The Dragon Prince voice cast is amazing and bless the creators for not shying away from the use of Canadian voice actors.
