The Hypocrisy of the Spacians (or, why worries about Kessler Syndrome are bullshit)
So, a number of things happened in the latest episode of G-Witch. A number of them were, uh, traumatizing. For both the cast and the viewers. To keep myself distracted, I'm going to focus on a little detail mentioned in episode 12. (Spoilers under cut!)
Tumblr media
Specifically, this line. Now, a lot of people have pointed out it's perfectly reasonable to ban kinetic space weaponry in favor of lasers; lasers don't leave behind any bullets or casings that can drift through space until they hit something and cause a Kessler Syndrome. And this is reasonable- until you look deeper.
Tumblr media
Norea here immediately points out the first layer of hypocrisy (the Spacian military-industrial complex being more than happy to pollute Earth while at the same time worrying about the pollution of space). But there's something more that undermines the kinetic weapons ban and it's stated reasoning entirely, that being that guns aren't the only thing that leaves behind space debris.
Every laser that misses and hits a building or asteroid or whatever, every limb of an enemy MS that's sheared off, all that sends little shards and particulates of material flying off into space, where they'll keep flying until they hit something, normally at high velocity.
For an example, let's look at the Vim/Bob fight in they very same episode:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The elder Jeturk is more than happy to shear off limbs and leave them drifting, not to mention his using very fucking physical cluster munitions. (How are ordinary guns banned but cluster bombs aren't?! Or is this a case of Vim's money allowing him to get away with flaunting the rules? Either way, more Spacian hypocrisy.)
And that's before we get into what happens to defeated combants; the mandatory post-kill explosion. That explosion doesn't atomize the defeated mobile suit to take care of resulting space debris, it just sends that space debris flying in every direction, making it all the harder to clean up. Here's a couple shots of Vim's MS blowing up:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look at how the Dilanza Sol visibly bulges outwards before the explosion completes, and the debris field left behind afterwards. A few weeks, years, decades, I dunno how long, but one day those little Dilanza Sol bits are going to drift into just the right position to ruin some freighter's day.
Now, one could argue that all this is just Vim's flaunting of the rules, or a result of Benerit Group being confronted with someone who doesn't obey the laws of war anyway. Problem is, they left behind plenty of space debris in other conflicts. Look at the aftermath of the Vanadis Incident:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or, hell, the duel between Suletta and El4n, may he rest in peace.
Tumblr media
Benerit Group and it's subsidiaries are more than okay with leaving behind fields of space debris from all sorts of sources, as long as those sources aren't guns. Even fore something as petty as a duel among students.
In conclusion, the ban on physical weaponry in the Ad Stella timeline isn't out of any genuine sense of care for the cleanliness of space, or worries about a Kessler Syndrome. The true reason is most likely moral grandstanding, similar to Imperial Germany kvetching about American shotguns in WW1. Alternatively, it could be as simple was wanting to deny what I assume are cheap, easy to manufacture weapons that could prove comparable to lasers to the poors/revolutionaries/poor revolutionaries most likely to buy and/or make them. Either way, the hypocrisy of the Spacian military-industrial complex is on full display here. The solar system of the Ad Stella timeline won't see someone fully dedicated to keep space clean and safe until the military industrial complex is dismantled- preferably in favor of a dictatorship of the proletariat that incentivized to care about the safety of freighter crews and so forth, instead of the corporatocracy incentivized to care about profit, damn everything else.

tumblr, twitter and tiktok has a chronic condition of mischaracterizing and headcanoning characters as gay and autistic and then acting as if those headcanons were canon all along, but what i find beautiful is that with metal gear solid (and disco elysium tbh) LITERALLY EVERYBODY is gay and/or autistic. Beautiful. like the big bad guy of mgs is a gay catboy who spent 60 years triple-crossing malicious international organizations just because he was so in love with somebody called NAKED SNAKE. said naked snake has a special interest in guns and is also a war criminal but dont worry too much about that

Considering that Chamuro wasn’t a popular ship at all really until the 2000s, despite EVERYTHING in Zeta and CCA…
Does that mean that the very first Chamuro shipper was Tomino himself?

It's so interesting that the Elan doubles are Spacian.
We don't fully have this confirmed for 4, but 5 is definitely from space. In the whole discourse of class in the show, it's always positioned as Earth=poor Space=rich and for most of the cast this holds up. But then there is Peil doing human experiments on Spacian children who do not even legally exist. Getting their face back eventually and an actual ID is the reason they're even doing this!
There's a Spacian lower class that is completely excluded from spoken discourse, who is non-existent both legally and in the public consciousness. The unspeakable and unspoken!
This is touched on a little with Suletta's Mercurian background, but is not expanded upon meaningfully. It gives such an interesting bit of connection between her and the Elans. Are they also from backwater mining sites? Where else does poverty spread in space?

I have a question for transformers/gundam/mech fans.
The engine of the mech seems to be in its chest,, and normally mech chests are huge and stick out quite a bit. But if a mech were to have visible top scars would the scar itself be soldered? If the thing that did the soldering did a bad job would the mech be made fun of for a bad soldering job? ( like how people will criticize shops/theme parks for bad soldering jobs) Also would parts of the engine have to be removed for this to actually work?

So was anybody going to tell me that Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury took place in one of Gundam’s (many) (infamous) alternate timelines, or was I just supposed to spend like a week confused about how the series went on so long with the suits draining the life force of the users without me ever hearing about it?

MG 1/100 RGM-79 GM (Clara Hart Use)
Pilot lore under the cut.
This lightly customized blue colored GM was the personal unit of Warrant Officer Clara Hart, assigned to her from before the Attack on Jaburo all the way up to the conclusion of the war during Operation Star One. Aside from its blue color scheme this GM was functionally identical to other GM units. As a commander unit, it sported two beam sabers rather than the standard one, which Officer Hart would dual wield in battle against many opponents.
21-Year-Old Clara Hart was born in California and throughout her early childhood developed a fascination with machines, a fascination she would eagerly share with her parents who supported and encouraged her interest in spite of their general ignorance to tech. At age 18 she was accepted into the Berkeley Engineering program and worked her way through an undergraduate degree, a privilege she had earned by largely eschewing social interactions for most of her high school career.
All this would be for nothing however, when Zeon declared war on the Earth Federation and made landfall on Earth with their state of the art Zaku mobile suits, eventually reaching California.
During the war, Hart was drafted into the effort against Zeon initially as a mechanic, helping maintain the tanks and fighter craft of the Federation ground forces. Due to the strong Zeon presence in the continent, Hart’s life became one of extreme stress and pressure, not the least of which due to the death of her father earlier during the invasion.
After the battle of Odessa and Federation Mobile Suits began to retake North America, Clara’s unit was assigned several early production GMs, though the pilot for one of them was unexpectedly killed in a Zeon ambush. Short on manpower with a new pilot not expected to arrive, Clara was forced to sortie in the GM despite her inexperience.
In spite of her lack of confidence and training, Clara proved an adequate MS pilot, particularly excelling in melee combat with a beam saber, and even participated in the defense of Jaburo. During this battle she would earn her title as the “Gouf-Slayer” after fighting four Goufs and destroying three at the cost of heavy damage to her unit. After this battle, Clara would be promoted to Warrant Officer and assigned as the leader of a mobile suit squadron.
Clara and her unit would join the attacks on Solomon and Jaburo aboard the Salamis Class Ship “Bloomington”. It was during this period that Clara’s GM would gain its blue paint scheme, inspired by the Goufs Clara had destroyed back on Jaburo.
Despite Clara’s embarrassment at the color scheme, her squadmates insisted it was good for morale, and moreover the rest of her squad had already adopted the blue color scheme anyway. It was also during this time that Clara would reunite with the Gouf pilot that had escaped her, Sophia Fos, (now piloting a Rick Dom), and striking up a rivalry with her.
At the Battle of A Baoa Qu, Clara performed admirably even against the high performance Gelgoogs, taking advantage of both her GM’s agility and adaptability to survive the battle. It was during this battle that Clara and her squadmates would meet Sophia Fos in combat for the last time, a fight that ended rather anticlimactically after Fos quickly betrayed her squadmates and surrendered, the woman realizing that Zeon was on it’s way out and that there was no more point in fighting.
After the war, despite gaining some limited notoriety for her skills as a pilot, Clara quickly resigned from the Federation Military and completed her engineering education. In 0081, Clara and her mother moved to the Von Braun city on the moon where she gained employment as a designer for mobile construction workers under the Kalvis Heavy Machinery company. The company would eventually be bought out by Anaheim Electronics, and some of its designers (including Clara) poached for a new MS Development branch. During her time here, Clara would meet with Sophia Fos in civilian life this time, the other woman now working as a test pilot for AE. After a turbulent few months of the most dysfunctional courting their coworkers had ever seen, Clara and Sophia would officially (if not publicly) begin a relationship, with Clara cruelly subjecting her mother to the pain of knowing Sophia Fos when the latter woman moved in with them a year later.
(To her dismay, Clara’s mother and Fos would get along quite well.)
During the Gryps War, while neither Clara nor Sophia would officially join with the AEUG, they did contribute to the construction, testing, and fielding of several of the organization's key machines.
Clara Hart was a “neurotic, panicky” woman, wracked with anxiety who nevertheless seemed to be driven by a primal urge to survive. She was often described by her squadmates as being fairly quiet and introverted, though taking her role as a leader with appropriate seriousness and care for those under her command, and becoming deeply saddened at the loss of her comrades in battle.
Her romance with Fos was sparked by an emotional break three years in the making when the more cavalier carefree woman insisted on “loosening her up”, an effort which ended with a fist fight outside a bar where Clara quickly became a sobbing mess in spite of her position both on top off and punching Fos repeatedly in the face, a dam breaking which finally resulted in her seeking therapy and forming a genuine connection to Sophia who was not (as one would expect) now terrified of her.
