He unlocked the phone and Joe snatched it out of his hand. His goal was clear as his finger made a bee-line for the phone app, opening it up to see nothing but Beck.

Of course, there were some other calls from his wife and his office but Beck was the only one that mattered right now.

"Shut it!" is more of what Joe wanted to say, but it all came out as an angered grunt. He kicked Nicky in the back of the knees, forcing his head closer to the fence. His finger moved to Nicky's messaging app where he'd find messages with Beck. The first one that caught his eye was a message from Beck: stop contacting me. It's over.
The more he scrolled up, the more evidence of their affair he could find. From images, to sexual messages detailing how Nicky wanted to taste her. It made him sick to his stomach and all he could think about was the betrayal.
How could she cheat? What the hell was he doing wrong? She's all he ever wanted. Everything he did was for her, and this is how she repays him? A tear dropped onto his screen, causing a ripple of water, distorting his view.
He kicked Nicky in the back of the knees again, causing him to fall to his knees before he'd start his pleading. "I-I have a family, I..." His breathing was labored as he stumbled over his words, "I can make it right."
Joe cocked his gun, how dare he even think about talking about his family now? After the affair he's been having with Beck? After all the lies and deceit?
"Please, my family, man, they don't deserve this."
Mr. Mooney's words came to mind: "Some people...deserve to die."
Beck's words also flooded his mind: "I know in my heart...that is not you. That can never be you."
The gun felt heavier and heavier, almost to the point where it felt like it was trying to pull itself away from his hand and toward Nicky. He was ready to pull the trigger, and Nicky could sense it. His body shook with fear and tears streamed down his face as he looked over his shoulder at the barrel pointed at his temple. This was it. He was going to die.
But something, something overwhelming led him to put his gun down. It might've been guilt. It might've been the belief that karma would come around. Whatever it was, it saved Nicky's life.
Joe's next destination was Beck's apartment. She was his final stop for the night, and he'd make it a memorable one. He wasn't sure what he would do but a part of him wanted to see her. He hurriedly walked to her apartment, opening the door with his key only to find her in the living room. The sound of the door opening and closing caught her attention. She turned around facing an angered Joe who seemed to have a few things on his mind. She noticed his demeanor, his stance. His hands balled into fists, his face red, his eyes bloodshot. He'd been crying.
"You told me I was crazy." He spoke slowly, his voice deep.
"What?"
"You told me I was crazy for even thinking it." Joe pointed at her, then back at himself all the while getting closer, "if we don't have trust, we have nothing. You said that to me. Do you remember?"
Then, it dawns on Beck. The first time Joe had accused of her of cheating, she said those exact words to him. "What are you talking about?" She looked down, to the side, anywhere but at Joe.
"You know what I'm talking about." There's a brief silence before Joe speaks again, his voice breaking. "There's no Emma Fox."
She swallows her spit, finding the courage to look Joe in the eyes.
"I'm only gonna ask you this once," he closes his eyes, "and I need the truth." He exhales slowly and shakily, tears threatening to spill from his eyes. "Are you, or were you ever fucking your therapist?"
Beck doesn't answer and instead looks away.
"Answer me," he says through gritted teeth. "Answer me!" She flinches, closing her eyes. He doesn't mean to yell at Beck, no, he would never intentionally yell at Beck. He loves her. You don't yell at people you love. But you don't cheat on people you love either.
"Yes. Yes, I was. I did. I...I cheated. But it's over now." She attempts to reason with him.
"I've done nothing but dote on you. Support you."
"I know."
"Love you," the volume of his voice gets louder.
"I know, Joe."
"And look at what you've done to me." His voice cracks. "You dig into my past, you dissect my life. You paint me out to be this monster, this...someone who could hurt people, who could do terrible things. But who is the monster here, really? Who?"
"It was wrong of me. I'm sorry."
"Sorry?" His jaw clenched. "You're fucking sorry? For what, Beck? For hurting me? For making me look like a fool?" His hand runs through his hair, pulling it, before he looks back up at Beck—her neck. He'd choke her. That's what he'd do. It was simple, and he'd get the same satisfaction as if he were to pull the trigger. He'd kill two birds with one stone. He'd choke the life out of her, and the pain would go away. All of it. All the pain she'd caused him would be gone. And she wouldn't have to feel it either. It'd be quick, too. She wouldn't suffer. Maybe they'd even end up in heaven together. He steps forward and she steps back, afraid. Afraid of what Joe might do to her.
Before he knew it, his hands were on her neck. She tried to pry them off but he was much stronger than she was. His hands gripped her tighter and tighter and her vision began to blur, and his mind began to race.
"Please, stop. I'm sorry," Beck plead, her voice barely above a whisper, "I love you."

On top of SatBK not being 1:1 with French Vulgate Arthuriana, I think the game has more decorum than to imply Lancelot will cuck Sonic. Plus, simple logic forbids it. If Sonic is Arthur, and Sonic left........... there is no king for Lancelot to cuck.
The French romances have some really fucked-up stuff in them, and although it is funny to think about said fucked-up stuff happening to colorful three-foot tall anthros, I don't think it should be taken this literally? Galahad's conception, for instance, would be considered rape by deception today.
In the French Vulgate, yes, the Battle of Camlan (in Welsh, it's spelled with one N) was largely the result of interpersonal strife. Agravaine and Mordred shoved Guinevere's adultery in Arthur's face, forcing him to punish her. Mordred further made power plays through treachery, coercion, and deceit, pitting Gawain and Lancelot against one another and lying about Lancelot and Arthur's deaths.
The narrative focus on chickens coming home to roost reflects the French romances' Christian notions of sin. Arthur tried to destroy the evidence of his incest, therefore it comes back to bite him in the ass much later on when Mordred snatches the throne. Guinevere pays for her adultery by being burned at the stake. So on and so forth.
However, Welsh sources are more concerned with Camlan's material causes, which may have reflected some version of a historical memory.
Just as volcano activity is speculated to have served as inspiration for the prophecy of Ragnarök, it could be inferred that the dramatic global climate change incurred by the massive volcanic eruption in 536 AD could have informed the cause of the Battle of Camlan according to the Welsh Triads.
In another Triad, we hear how Mordred showed up at Arthur’s court in Celli Wig in Cornwall, ate all of Arthur’s food, drank all of his wine, and dragged Guienevere off her throne and beat her. Arthur repaied Mordred’s insult by visiting his court and similarly taking all the food and mead.
1.) The dates align. The Annales Cambriae give 537 AD as the year in which the battle occurred, whereas the volcanic eruption occurred in the previous year. An apocalyptic year's worth of famine and gloom (the sun was said to have an eerie, bluish glow) would have deeply impacted the ancient psyche, causing the conditions necessary for war. 2.) Plague often follows famine, which would also track with the Annales Cambriae's claim that "there was plague in Ireland and Britain" following "Arthur and Medraut fell."
3.) Devoid of context, eating all of the food in the king's court and subsequently repaying your enemy the same favor seem like cartoonish things to do... unless that was the only food you had left.

The Whumps of March 2024: "All For Naught"

Lancelot found that it was strangely difficult to breathe. It might have been his injuries, still smarting after weeks of unconsciousness. But he didn't think that was it.
The Holy Grail had rejected him.
It wasn't as if he had never failed a quest before—knights had unseated him, villains had managed to harm the innocent, but as much as those grieved him, this felt different. On those occasions, he could at least take comfort in the fact that he had merely failed—been a bit too slow, or made the wrong choice at a crucial moment. This time, he had been told that he, himself, was the failure. He hadn't just made an error in judgement; he had been judged, and found guilty.
And rightly so.
He closed his eyes, taking another painful breath. All these months, he had been praying and trying to make atonement. What hadn't be done, that God had refused to accept his repentance?
But then, maybe the question was, what had he done? What could he do, to undo so many years of sin, of lust and deceit and treachery?
He told himself, miserably, that he would stop his crimes. He would make himself worthy again, no matter how long it took or how difficult it proved.
Of course, his vow didn't last. He had barely returned to Camelot when he found himself back in Queen Guinevere's bed.
After all, God had already rejected him. Why should a failure like him even try?

i haven’t watched the series in years so my memory of how merlin found out about lancelot being a shade and how all the gwencelot stuff went down is very very fuzzy like actually its barely there at all but anyways arthur being betrayed by three of the people he loves the most in one fell swoop is uh mwua
arthur walks in to find lancelot and gwen smooching and is angry and heartbroken and goes to split them apart and is yelling and gwen steps between him and lancelot and is pleading with him to spare lancelot which just rubs salt in the wound even more. merlin comes rushing in and lancelot turns to look at him and laughs about how finally arthur’s pet sorcerer is here
merlin (doesn’t know that lancelot is a shade) is also betrayed and is like “wtf??” and turns to arthur like “he’s lying, i’m not” and arthur believes him but isn’t really paying attention to that at the moment bc he just caught his fiancé and previously dead knight locking lips so excuse him for having priorities. uh so lancelot pulls gwen back and holds a dagger to her throat and is like “then save her” and arthur steps forward to help and the shade digs the dagger into her skin, drawing blood
so merlin reveals his magic by pulling the dagger into his own hand and knocking the shade back so gwen can stumble free. now arthur is surrounded by people that’ve betrayed him in a two minute time span. merlin’s magic throw knocks the shade out and now the three of them are just standing around in shock
the guards finally file in while arthur gathers his voice to speak or rather yell at them. “betrayal betrayal adultery infidelity lies sorcery” and the guards rush forward and snatch merlin’s arms back to lock in cold iron. he hisses in pain and arthur is loath to admit that he almost told the guards to stop. someone gently takes gwen in their hold and leads her down to the dungeons while merlin is practically dragged
both of them in their cells crying while arthur is upstairs raging in the room he found them in, throwing chairs and yelling and whatnot. anyway uh arthur can’t kill either of them but the sting of the betrayal is too much to simply ignore or forgive and move on so all three are banished and they just kinda look at each other outside of camelot. ig eventually merlin finds that the lancelot they’re with us a shade and removes the enchantment over gwen. then emrys (magic incarnate) is just like “i want my lancelot back” and just slorps his soul from the otherworld and shoves it into the shades body, free of morgana’s control
now arthur is back home in camelot absolutely catatonic. he’d probably be at least somewhat able to blink if it hadn’t been all three of them at once. if at least one had remained, he’d be able to at least get up and pace his room but for rn he’s stuck in his bed, barely able to breathe. he wants them back home but he never wants to see them again but that idea rings more heartache which makes him angrier and he never wants to see them again but he wants them home but- its a vicious cycle.
i don’t know how to jump to the end but eventually there’s a magic repeal and the three of them are welcomed back home and whatever ship floats ur boat kisses and holds hands and other sacrilegious activities the youth indulge in. personally, i like to imagine that arthur was befuddled on why merlin’s betrayal of lies and deceit hurt more that guinevere’s betrayal of infidelity and disloyalty. he’s ofc mad at lancelot for mucking up his perfect picture of happiness but he’s known that lancelot and gwen had a Thing before they got together so he’s not that surprised.
but merlin?? it cut deeper than morgana’s betrayal, his own sister. he wonders for a while and the memories and feelings start to get jumbled up and he dreams of finding lancelot and merlin kissing and gwen being outed as a sorceress. oddly enough, when he wakes he can’t find any anger of betrayal toward dream!gwen. but gods did he want to kill dream!lancelot, he wanted to tear him apart. then he wanted to fall to his knees and cry and shit and throw up over dream!merlin’s betrayal. he comes to some Realizations.

I have a fic idea, but I don’t have the time nor the energy to write it myself, so feel free to use if you like the idea (also if there is already a fic out there with a similar concept let know, I want to read it!).
The idea:
When Lancelot comes back as the shade, he hasn’t forgotten that Merlin as magic, but because he’s there to weaken Arthur, decides to force Merlin to reveal his magic somehow (because this is evil lance being controlled by Morgana), and is successful.
You can decide how that plays out and stuff, and include the Gwen bit too if you want.
But I’d like it to have a happy ending if possible, but it’s your story so wherever it leads you.
The only thing I ask is to send me the story, wherever posted somewhere or in a message, just really want to read a story like that.

i think the biggest thing about sgatgk is that it ultimately revolves around shame. sgatgk HAS a reputation in regards to bertilak/gawain/lady bertilak and sometimes i feel like discussion ON sgatgk revolves SOLELY around it when there’s so much more to speak about, and while i genuinely DO believe that a bertilak/gawain/lady bertilak threesome occurred AFTER sgatgk, divorcing the concept of shame and dishonor from the text does it an ultimate disservice.
in sgatgk gawain is young -- this is arguably his FIRST quest, his time to prove himself not only TO himself, but to court, and to uncle and king, arthur. gawain of orkney who takes up the mantle, who answers the green knight’s call, who chooses to go on this quest even against arthur’s behest to show once and for all that he is not just arthur’s uppity nephew, that gawain TOO is chivalrous and honorable, that he too has god on his side, that he too has a role and a place at the king’s round table, that he deserves to be here like any other knight. and here’s the thing -- that’s what this starts off as, this is what drives gawain on, what spurns him forward. and the thing is from the start from the moment that gawain beheads the green knight, there is this aura of dread and horror as gawain realizes that his days are numbered, that there is not a way out of it, and yet, because he is an honorable and chivalrous knight, or he is trying to be, he goes anyways to meet his doom.
however, gawain BREAKS his vows -- while yes, he tells sir bertilak that he has received a kiss (albeit from lady bertilak and thus kisses sir bertilak in turn to uphold their bargain of “hunting”), in the end gawain ultimately FAILS to tell bertilak that in his “hunt”, he has won lady bertilak’s sash which will keep him from physical harm. the thing is this thus goes against the concept OF chivalry and OF knighthood and gawain is AWARE of this. medieval texts revolve around the concept that “if you do not lie then god will be on your side and thus you will win the battle and prove righteous and chivalric” (which is why lancelot “winning” in battles against meleagaunt in lancelot: knight of the cart is humorous. lancelot states outright that it is not KAY who slept with guinevere, but never states himself, thus he bends the laws of chivalry, and while he wins and thus proving that he is in the “right”, the reader knows that he is damned). when gawain goes to meet the green knight with the sash tight around his waist and to receive his own beheading, he flinches when the axe comes to his throat. of course we can take this as gawain’s fear of death, but, we and gawain and the green knight/bertilak knows that he HAS the sash, that he is safe from physical harm. gawain is reacting to his own deceit, that he is swindling the green knight of what is rightfully his, that he has turned away from honor and from death and chivalric duty like a true knight. the green knight mocks him for this before revealing that bertilak knows of gawain’s deceit and that there is no harm done. (i suppose we can debate whether the sash truly did keep gawain from all physical harm as he DID get nicked on the neck to prove his nerve.)
but harm HAS been done despite the fact that bertilak calls gawain the most blameless knight in all of the land and the last few pages of sgatgk is filled with gawain’s shame and horror. he returns back to camelot and tells the court of his tale, of his deception, of how the nick on his neck and the sash prove gawain to be a coward, unchivalrous, not a true knight of the round table. in turn, the court laughs at him and absolves gawain of blame and we know they wear sashes of green to commemorate gawain and to always be honest and true but for gawain -- how horrific that must have been, how terrifying. gawain who wanted to prove his own merit and gawain whose sins have been swept away, and gawain whose knighthood is then shaped by this treachery. it’s a far cry from the gawain of the dutch texts and the gawain in le morte who is shown to be much more lax in how people perceive him, in what people think of his knightly body, rather gawain seems to lounge comfortably in being detested while also beloved, (which makes the fact that gawain STARTS the grail quest while also seemingly not being too preoccupied or bothered by the fact that he CAN’T see the grail versus lancelot who is genuinely troubled by the fact that he can’t perceive the grail and gets fireballs thrown at him by god for his troubles) and the seeds of it can be seen here where gawain’s dishonor first springs up.

The Once and Future Queen is an endlessly rewatchable episode, isn't it? It's weird how immature Arthur was in the beginning. He never stops being a brat, but his manners improve, at least. Poor Gwen had to put up with an entitled Prince staying in her home. One minute he was proving he had depth, telling Gwen the reason he was competing in the tournament anonymously was that he wanted to know he had won on his own merit, and, the next, he was having Gwen fetch him clean water in the middle of the night. Gwen was touched by his sincerity, and then annoyed; so annoyed, in fact, that the next day at the tournament, she was still angry at Arthur.
Arthur's not-so-secret masochism kink will forever be funny to me. He was taken aback by Gwen's whole rant against him, but he was never actually mad at her; he pretended to be while encouraging her to keep going. Like, for real, he wasn't exactly happy to hear he was entitled and arrogant, but he wasn't ashamed or angry. He genuinely valued Gwen's opinion and was happy that someone was showing him complete honesty for once. He was so pleased by her words he even offered to cook her dinner for the first and last time in his life.
Merlin: You're trying to impress her? Arthur: Don't be ridiculous, Merlin. And get me a decent shirt, will you? Your clothes are making me itch all over, it's like having fleas.
The biggest plot hole in this episode is how long it took Gwen to notice Arthur hadn't cooked for her. I mean, first of all, her kitchen was clean, second of all, she was missing no ingredients, third of all, Arthur can't cook and the food was "delicious", forth of all, didn't she know what her own plates looked like? Did she just wait until the end of the meal to call him out on it? But she was so nice while they were eating and thanked him for the food... She wasn't pretending...
Anyway, Arthur offering to clean up the dishes was a much bigger deal than Gwen realized. He lied to her about the food, but the mere thought that Prince Arthur wanted to cook for someone and do their dishes because he'd been treating Gwen like a servant and wanted to repay her, was already, on its own, inconceivable.
G: Because I thought you'd shown some humility! You'd done something kind for me even though I'm just a servant! A good king should respect his people, no matter who they are. A: Guinevere. I know I have much to learn. There are some things that I am terrible at - cooking being one of them. But also, knowing what to say to someone I care about.
Oh, Arthur... We know your flaws and we love you anyway.
Arthur and Gwen's first kiss was just so... ugh. I want to live in it.
I've said it before, but that kiss was the first truly impulsive decision Arthur ever made. Arthur only ever lied to or disobeyed his father to help others, like Mordred or the people of Camelot. He didn't disobey his father for selfish reasons. He lied in this episode about missing the tournament, but he wasn't truly doing anything Uther wouldn't have approved of. His father would've understood, and even admired, Arthur's wish to prove himself beyond his title. And, still, he planned his deceit. It hadn't been an impulse decision to lie to the King during dinner, he'd already had a plan.
Arthur kissing Gwen wasn't planned at all. He made a split-second decision for himself. It wasn't about proving his worth, which was as much about himself as it was about proving he could be the Prince his people deserved; Arthur had no ulterior motive, no plan, or even justification, for kissing Gwen. He just wanted to, so he did. He did it for himself, because he liked her. And it was such a big moment for Arthur, not only because his future relationship with Gwen would be so important to him on his journey to become King (and beyond), but because it showed a different side to Arthur. In that moment, Prince Arthur disappeared and Arthur really was just Arthur. He got what he wanted in the beginning of the episode: he was a normal man who had kissed a woman he liked, and that woman had kissed him back because she liked him too, not because he was the Prince.
Anyway, the music in this episode was beautiful. It wasn't just the Arwen theme. During the final match at the tournament, the music choice was utterly perfect too. But the camerawork and Gwen's reactions while watching an injured Arthur fight Myror were more than a tad dramatic. The music choice fit the match, but it was a bit much when combined with Gwen's reactions. It made her look like a damsel in distress. For that same reason, I also don't like this bit of dialogue (I highlighted the most dramatic lines):
G: You're losing too much blood. A: Do what you can. I have to be back on the course within five minutes or I forfeit the match. G: You can't possibly joust, you're too badly injured! A: I have never withdrawn from a match. I do not intend to start now. G: You would risk your life to protect your pride? You have nothing to prove. Least of all to me.
I don't get why Gwen would tell Arthur he had nothing to prove to her in particular. I don't think he'd been trying to impress her at all. Arthur would never withdraw from a match, not unless something bigger than his life was at stake. I think she said it to show Arthur he had already impressed her, because she knew he'd tried to impress her or gain her approval before. Moreover, though, she said it just so Arthur could answer: "I have everything to prove. To myself.".
Gwen was even more impressed with Arthur after that. She had a real kink for the heroic types. That bit of dialogue was on the same league as most of the dialogue in Lancelot and Guinevere, which I dislike for the same reasons: Gwen was used to prop-up the male characters, with her love and approval being a sort of trophy or reward for their good behavior. I mean, Arthur didn't even reveal his identity after winning the tournament because he wanted to show Gwen humility, and thus gain her approval.
Likewise, Lancelot realized his worth after Gwen told him he was "all that was good" in Lancelot and Guinevere, and impressed Gwen by being willing to die for her, which he considered the noblest death. Arthur proved his worth to himself by fighting in the tournament, and the fact that he didn't do it to gain Gwen's approval impressed her regardless. Either way, it was like Gwen fell under their spell after their heroics, which painted her as some damsel in distress from a fairytale. It was disservice to her character, and what caused the whole Lancelot drama.
The ending with Arthur looking back at Gwen was really touching, but I wasn't touched by Gwen's words: "Perhaps when you are King, things will be different.". Considering the Lancelot and Guinevere episode, and how Gwen was the one to pull away from Arthur for the rest of the season (and even in season 3), the writers had, again, made Gwen the princess locked in a tower waiting for her true love to come. Gwen wasn't like that. She wasn't going to wait for a man she couldn't have. But Arthur looking back at her was beautiful, because, despite his words, it didn't matter that his father didn't approve. He would always choose her. The scene was also symbolic of the inner conflict Arthur would experience for the rest of the series: Gwen/his heart or his father/tradition? Arthur's characterization was overall much better than Gwen's, though Gwen's characterization was great until the kiss.
To end things on a lighter note, how the fuck did Myror climb the castle with his bare hands? Remember Arthur and Merlin did it in Lancelot and Guinevere too? And chatted on the way up? Hilarious.
Poor Merlin and the leech tank. If Merlin could barely finish all his chores with magic, how were normal servants supposed to handle the workload?...
Anyway, great episode!

The Other Merlin: Book review #2
Synopsis:
For as long as she could remember, all Emry wanted was to be a great magician like her father, the magnificent Merlin. As a kid, she fought to be included in his magic lessons for her twin brother, Emmet, and easily outshone him with each spell she cast. But after her father's disappearance several years ago, Emry has been feeling a little lost. Fate soon appears in the form of a royal messenger, summoning Emmet to court to serve as Prince Arthur's right-hand wizard. With Emmett indisposed thanks to a bad spell, Emry has to disguise herself as a teen boy and pretend to be her brother at the castle until they're able to switch.
Training as a wizard is everything Emry hoped it would be, except working so closely with the unbearably hot Arthur is a growing danger. They soon share adventures and a connection that can't be denied, but Emry's secret is a crime punishable by death. When royal scandals involving Lancelot, Guinevere, and Gawain threaten to reveal her truth, Emry must decide whether to stay and risk everything for a love borne out of deceit, or leave and never fulfill her potential to be Camelot's greatest magician.
My Review:
I absolutely love this book.
After procrastinating for weeks to read it, I finished it in 1 day.
This is a modern retelling of The Legends of Arthur. With casual mentions of the LGTQ+ community, feminist themes, power, corruption as well as friendship and, my personal favourite, found family. I hope these are the books that the next generation gets to read.
It’s amazing how this book can talk about different topics, such as corruption, toxic families, and the future.
The fact that this story doesn’t follow the original makes it all the more better. It might seem like a weakness but it is actually a strong point.
The story might be a little hard to get into and is definitely only for people who like re imaginings of stories.
The writing is great, and I absolutely love the Merlin-Arthur banter. It’s both cute and genuinely funny. This book was a breath of fresh air.

DECEIT; how it grew and spread like a corrupted infection, starting as something minuscule, a mean to an end, until it became as effortless as breathing. she once thought herself a pious woman, well aquatinted with the seven faced god and the qualities each provided to life. once; though perhaps the gods were less than pleased with her efforts, as despite the scriptures she flicked through, she often found passages on lies, the corruption of lies and how they spread, matter of hypocrisy, and lust. it seemed like life itself was surrounded by lies as of the moment, and regardless of whichever god’s features she fixed her emerald gaze upon; there was no escaping it.
this was not the home of the drowned god; to the most religiously devout of the seven, such followers of the drowned god were merely fanatics of another faith. it was for that reason when the doors creaked open and the familiar olive skin and dark features of the greyjoy king came into her line of vision did a slight sigh escape from her lips. no doubt there had been a long stretch of silence upon her own behalf, not responding to messages sent by greyjoy squires and messengers regarding updates on progress on the deal they had made. there was much to address regarding the tension that had built within the relations that were supposed to heal; were she surprised? no.
such silence would continue on guinevere’s behalf; she knew little of what to make of the snakes slipping through the iron islands, but she knew even less of morra greyjoy and whether she knew about the plots twisting within her kingdom. all she knew was that the blacktydes would need to be blinded by nothing but ashes; rising to her feet from the alter of the mother, she fixed her skirts before beginning to walk back up the aisle to the exit. for sometimes silence was truly the best answer.

Orkney Girls: The Usurper
(For those new here, this is an ongoing, out of order Arthurian story with female versions of the Orkney brothers. Sometimes this makes things better. Sometimes this absolutely does not.)

Morsure held the letter in her hand, trying desperately to make sense of it. Peace. To anyone else, the news that Arthur had made peace with Lancelot and they would all be coming home would have been a profound relief. First Guinevere, now Lancelot, all were pardoned. Even to Morsure, it should have been a relief to know that her stressful regency was coming to an end. It was all over. They could now pretend nothing had ever happened.
Except for Gowain and Agrippine and Graeria and Gracia.
All my sisters...all of them...
Gowain, whom Lancelot had loved. Gracia, who had loved Lancelot. Agrippine and Graeria, who had never been any kind of threat to him. The flower of knighthood had struck down women, noble ladies of the court, all to protect himself from the consequences of his own crime. And Arthur loved him enough to accept him back. Morsure had thought her father had loved his nieces, his heiress Gowain most of all, but had he ever loved any of them if he would accept this?
Morsure was hardly even aware of her own feet moving her towards the throne room.
Still I sing, bonnie girls, bonnie mad girls, Orkney girls are bonnie...
It was a song her mother had sung to tease her daughters. Morsure had lost her and her stepfather Lot to murder as well, long ago. And now she wondered if she truly was going mad.
All my sisters. All the bonnie mad girls.
Guinevere gave a start on her throne when she saw Morsure. For her part, Morsure’s facial expression hardly changed when she looked at her stepmother. The white-hot hatred she had once felt for her had by now dulled into cold contempt. For lack of anything else to attack, however, she grabbed hold of Guinevere’s arm and shoved her off her throne to the floor.
“Go,” she snarled, ignoring Guinevere’s shout of shock.
“Go?” asked the trembling queen.
“Go anywhere. Go to your family, go to a convent, throw yourself into the sea for all I care. I never want to see your deceitful face ever again.”
The letter from her father was by now crumpled in Morsure’s hand. This was her last chance to walk away and cease to think. She could go to a convent herself and spend the rest of her life mourning her family and praying for peace, and the prophecy that mad old hermit had spoken long ago would never come to pass. Let Arthur lose his bastard daughter as well as his legitimate niece and have to work out a successor on his own.
All my sisters. All the bonnie mad girls.
“Your lover has killed your husband,” Morsure shouted, “and one day you shall burn in hell together.” She struck Guinevere a blow with the back of her hand, then turned to the frightened crowd around her.
“Muster whatever troops remain,” she said. “If Arthur is dead and I must be queen, I shall be a warrior queen. We ride to avenge my family.”
