Crutchie's fear
If you asked Crutchie what he fears, he’d say some odd answer like frogs or fireflies. And you’d wonder why he’s afraid of such insignificant things, you’d ask why he isn’t afraid of more terrifying devils than amphibians and insects. There would be a quick smile bright enough to hide the hollowness of the laugh that cracks from his lips. A jumble of excuses of the disgust and violence that those particular animals have committed against him would dance around on the cold night air, imaginary dangers twirling on visible breaths. It’s enough to stop prying questioning, enough to assure those around him that he still feared like the rest, that he was one of the last ones to yet fall victim to the cruel reality of their world.
Hidden behind it all, under the façade of innocence that he lets himself be buried in, the truth of their world lies harsher and crueler than ever on his mind. For he understands the worst of their world, the uncaring, unkind, creatures that stalk through it, regardless of day or night, striking out at those they deemed weak. His soul had been thrashed with the truth, flayed harshly upon his being, since as long as he knew. Aching heart scarred with the wickedness of the world despite his attempts against it.
No, Crutchie has no fear. Has no option to fear. Has faced and overcome the worst of their world long ago. Has learned there was no place left inside for fear, not if he wanted to keep living. There was no choice really, he was well acquainted with the terrible actors that crept out of the shadows, nearing a friendship with them, in some twisted way. And he could no longer fear them, could no longer see them as ghosts and haunts, nightmares that the boys told each other about, myths and stories whispered late at night. No longer fictitious personalities the others exaggerated but real creatures that he knew too well.
If he were to respond truthfully, he’d ask how he’s supposed to fear those he has known since before he could speak. How is he supposed to fear those who’s repeated offenses are so often written in his dreams, he no longer remembers sleep without them? How could he fear those whose actions he had memorized in sickening detail? Fear bred on ignorance, and he had none in regard to those who the world deemed the cruelest, so how is he supposed to fear them? When the familiarity, the regularity, the near expectation, that danger lurks just behind, how is he supposed find fear in his heart, after all these years?
But he can’t say that, can’t confess this to anyone really, not even himself. Cause once he does, once he realizes that he’s let the world steal away with a piece of his being, that it had mangled and mauled his very core ‘til it no longer worked as it was designed, he’d have to accept it. Have to reckon with such a fact, and he can’t face it yet, call it the only fear he has left.
So, he chooses a dislike for some menial thing, lets disgust or ambivalence disguise itself as fear. Told those who asked those trivial ‘fears’, impressed them upon his mind, kept them as his own as harbor to hide in before he faced the growing storm that swirled just below the surface of his mind. One day he knew he had to face the truth that rang in his heart, but he would rather face a thousand moments of the world’s cruelty, rather pretend to fear a thousand different insects, than let today be the day he allowed himself to become acquainted with his last standing fear.
------------------
Just some thoughts I had about Crutchie. It's probably pretty ooc but I was trying to get over my writers block and this came about. Anyways I hope this helped me cause now I'm itching to write some more of my ongoing fanfic ^-^

More random newsies hc's
note: most of these are just me projecting onto these characters so it might be a little ooc
also these can be modern or canon era - Sarah really loves plants and when she meets the rest of the newsies she gives some of them plants she thinks match their personality
- Jack has a ton of little cactus, Race has a small jade plant, Spot has some spiral aloe and crutchie has some hanging burrows-tail
- Spot loves spicy food and Jack can't stand anything that tastes even remotely citrus-y
- Race and Jack have ADHD, Albert has ADD, Davey has dyslexia and OCD
- Jack really likes to draw repetitive designs especially when he's stressed
- Race wears glasses and is borderline legally blind without them yet refuses to wear them, mostly because he loses them
- Katherine and Crutchie have giant collections of crystals
- Spot gets really creeped out by mirrors and has to cover the ones in his room to sleep.
- Jack doodles on himself to calm himself down
- Spot really likes horror movies, especially gorey ones, but he can't handle any that have to do with parasites or aliens
- Daveys favorite movies are the night at the museum movies
- Jack HATES spiders and usually has to call one of the other newsies to deal with it.
- Crutchie loves the lion king musical on broadway
- Les will ocassionally sneak animals into the lodging house even though none of the other newsies can figure out how he does it.

THIS. THIS POST. I WILL NEVER FORGIVE YOU AKB.
i have genuinely decided not a single person is allowed to write crutchie anymore except for me. get away from him. don’t touch him. i just saw a post genuinely calling him an innocent baby who watches cartoons in the year of our lord 2024. i’m swinging a baseball bat wildly.

so while no nuance november is a tiktok trend, i don’t really have a presence there.. and neither does newsies, so. no nuance november: rizz’s hot takes. also hello, how are you guys????
disclaimer i GUESS: i do respect yall, this isn’t... bullying. just opinions. calm it down.
if you still see jack kelly as white, you’re wrong. full stop incorrect- we did not consume the same piece of media if you still wholeheartedly see that. i can understand white presenting, but... theres gotta be Something for the story to be believable for me
i think there can be options in how people present crutchie, since a “crutch” does not have to mean a physical, literal crutch. a crutch is an accommodation. easily it could be nearly any other disability- i’d love to see a deaf or hoh crutchie (yes i know there was an asl production, obviously this is different)
is this an immigrant time period or isn’t it? what the fuck’s all this english doing on stage?? throw in some other characters speaking other languages or you’re representing history more incorrectly than you already are.
jeremy jordan is worth the hype, not the idolization.
speaking of actors, they are PEOPLE, not characters. the obsession with btc at this point is borderline disgusting, that one i’m really not kidding about. stop it. i still see this shit
also isn’t it interesting how the majority of the fandom seems mainly attached to the white actors? hmmm...... 🧐
at this point its nearly hard to watch jerjor as jack kelly just based on age✌🏼
sprace. absolute no from me dawg, no chemistry. they’re great as an ooc relationship, but there is so nothing there it’s not even funny. there are some good fics out there though for sure. ALSO 92sies is.. a Bit more valid i’ll let yall have it. in theory not practice for both versions
jatherine is also valid, in theory. in practice, there is also no chemistry, which is horribly unfortunate
sarah jacobs is borderline essential to the newsies plot if they ever hope to spread strike news to the rest of the city’s children workers
i’m extremely bored of blond skinny racetrack, aren’t you guys already??? make him black, write him black. just. literally. draw racetrack black or i will and thats a threat.
unrelated but out loud trying to say 92sies i said “ninety tuesdays”
anyone who still writes david as this mumbling nervous hand-wringing kid.... did you watch the musical? did we see the same thing? writing ooc is fine, and you guys even write it extremely well, but you gotta admit thats ooc
maybe the hottest take: yall need to acknowledge that the ensemble has no character- they could give those lines to literally anyone. they are tradable and don’t truly give real personality- not enough for a whole character, at least. the bright side of that is that whatever yall have written for newsboy number 57? congrats! you now have an oc, and that’s the coolest thing about this fandom.
a fandom which i miss.. like nothing’s happening and nothing will happen again but like hi guys
nsfw take under the cut ;)
jack kelly is not a top i repeat JACK KELLY IS NOT A TOP!!!!!!! hes not. jack’s the blowhard 👀.... davey... is the brains. rb if you know the truth 😤

Something To Believe In
Hey there friends! I decided to give my hand at writing a Jack Kelly x David Jacobs one shot fanfic. Sorry if it’s OOC or anything. It was my first shot in a very long time writing this.
So all of this goes down after the rally between Jack and Davey.
David was so stunned and hurt by what just happened. He just ran off entirely after the whole debacle at Medda’s theatre. Jack Kelly, the leader of the strike and his best friend! Just betrayed all of the newsies and himself. Punching a brick wall with his fist David cried out in frustration on the verge of tears recalling everything that just happened minutes ago. Sinking against the brick wall he took off his cap and squeezed it with all of his might. “Heya Davey? I was just going to take Les back to ya place for ya. If that’s a’ight with you. You look like you might need some space to think about things alone. You can head up to Jacks penthouse.” Race gestured at the fire escape near where David was slumped against the brick wall. “I doubt Jack would go there with everything that just happened at the rally.” Wes walked up to his brother and touched his shoulder. “Don’t worry Davey. I’m sure Jack will come around! I’m sure of it. He wouldn’t leave us alone like this.” David reached up and squeezed Les’s hand and smiled at him sadly. “Yeah bud, I’m sure there must be some kind of explanation. Hurry along with Race okay? Tell Mom I’ll be back soon. I just need some time to think about some stuff.” He shifted his attention towards Race and stared at him with a sad smile. “Race, thank you. I’ll head up there and try to clear my head. I owe you one for taking care of Les.” Race shifted on his feet with a big smirk on his face and smacked Davey on his other free shoulder. “Oh, trust me I’ll collect when the time comes.” David rolled his eyes and let out a small chuckle. “Got it. Just don’t bleed me dry now.” “Come on Les lets get ya back to ya place.” Les and Race walked side by side as Race held his hand up in a goodbye gesture and kept walking forward until they were both out of sight.
Climbing up the ladder David had so many thoughts going through his head he didn’t even know where to start. Once David was in Jack's “Penthouse” He saw the appeal the place where his friend liked to hang out. “The view is gorgeous. I wonder if Jack ever painted this view from here or sketched it.” Sitting down he let his legs hang through the railing of the balcony he was on and just leaned against the bars and sighed looking into the distance and started talking to himself. “Jack has put so much into this strike. He cares about his friends and these boys so much. Why would he do this? It doesn’t make any sense! What about Crutchie? What about everyone else!” Rubbing his forehead he started to tear up again but he wasn’t too sure why. His chest was hurting. He felt betrayed that must of been why right? “All I was doing was going to sell papes with my brother to help feed my family. That’s it. Then he just popped up out of nowhere.” David rarely felt so frustrated with himself and the current situation he was in was driving him crazy. “Damn it Jack! You and your beautiful blue eyes and stupid-” David stiffened and he felt his heart pounding and like the world just froze. Shaking his head he tried to calm down. “No, I did not just say beautiful. That’s illegal Davey! Oh god, that and the nickname he gave me I love when he calls me that.” His eyes widened and everything just slowly pieced themselves together in front of him like a puzzle and Jack Kelly was that missing puzzle piece. “I’m supposed to be angry with him right now! I’m hurt!” Shaking he stood up and stared at the New York skyline as the sun began to set. “Well, I guess that’s that Jacobs. You’re screwed.” He chuckled to himself and noticed some papers sticking out and decided to look at them and noticed they were Jacks drawings.
Walking back to his penthouse Jack felt like screaming. “I did the right thing. I know I did. No one can get hurt because of me.” Jack recalled how badly Davey reacted to what he said at the rally and he felt his heart break looking at his dear friend like that. Sure, they just met not too long ago but it felt like forever for him. They just clicked and got along so well. But at Medda’s that all changed. “Davey..” Jack whispered under his breath. “Shit.” He got so angry he started to climb the fire escape to his penthouse and was swearing under his breath. When he got to the top he saw a tall figure wearing a newsboy cap. His heart stopped as he said in a whisper. “What are you doing here?” David turned around staring at Jack with sad eyes. “Race showed me the way here. It’s a beautiful view. I needed a place to think about things.” Jack walked up to Davey and seen he was holding his drawings and ripped it out his hands impulsively. “Hasn’t anyone taught ya not to touch other people's things!” David flinched and straightened himself up and stared at Jack. “You have skills Jack truly. Is that the Refuge? I can’t believe our friends and other newsies are staying in those conditions! We have to expose that!” Jack laughed and shook his head and walked closer to Davey. “Dave, no one cares about us and how we live!” David touched Jacks shoulder. “We can talk with Katherine I’m sure she can get your drawings published. She has to have something else we can use against Pulitzer she’s talented and witty.” Jack pushed Davey away and leaned against the railing and sighed. “Why aren’t you mad at me?” David walked towards Jack once more but stopped himself and looked at his friends form sadly. “I came to a few realizations Jack about things. But first can you please explain to me why you did it? It hurts yes. But I’m not mad.” Turning around Jack looked at Davey in the eyes and bit his lip then looked at the ground. “Pulitzer...he gave me an ultimatum he said to either A; Take the money and go to Santa Fe and disband the union or B; He was going to throw You and Les and the rest of the newsies in the Refuge and I couldn’t.” Jack focused his attention solely on Davey and stared into his eyes with tears in his own. “ I couldn’t let him do that to you. Not you. You’ve given me so much Davey. You’ve given me something to believe in.” David moved closer to Jack and took his hand in his trying to calm Jack. Jack’s eyes never left Daveys. He squeezed his hand gently. “We made this union together and I just don’t know what to do Davey. Please tell me what to do.” David took his other hand and touched Jacks cheek and rubbed it with his thumb. “Jack we can do this together. Like we have from the beginning.” David was nervous but his heart was pounding he was scared that he was going to mess this up. But at the current moment it was like time has frozen once more. Getting closer to Jack he leaned in and closed the gap between them. It was a soft chaste kiss but messy. Heart pounding he realized that Jack Kelly, His best friend. Was reciprocating the kiss he was actually kissing him back. Stunned Jack pulled away and leaned his forehead against Daveys. “Woah...I-I didn’t expect that out of you Davey.” Jack whispered and squeezed Davey’s hand. David looking through his thick eyelashes he made eye contact with Jack and whispered back. “I didn’t mess this up did I? When you said that you did it for me, I kind of just lost control.” Jack pulled away and shook his head. “No, not at all. I felt something between us since I first saw you.” Jack awkwardly took off his hat and rubbed the back of his head blushing. “What about Katherine?” David sadly looked up at Jack and Jack rushed towards Davey and grabbed both of his hands in his. “Katherine is beautiful, kind, smart, witty and beyond. But Davey she isn’t you- Wait, am I kidding myself here Dave? A guy like you can’t be with someone like me. It just doesn’t happen. You have a family, A home, Somewhere safe to stay. Here I am living meal to meal on pennies. I never know where I’ll sleep next. You know I’m a rule breaker Davey. So I could care less about being in trouble about being with you even if it means legal trouble.” Davey hugged Jack tightly against him and whispered in his ear. “I’ll always be here for you Jack. No matter what kind of situation you’re in, I'll always be by your side to help you. Now please stop rambling Jackie.” Pulling apart once more he kissed Jack once more with more passion before pulling apart at the sound of someone climbing up the ladder. Katherine looked like she interrupted something important as she looked at the disheveled boys but just brushed it off. “Guys! There you are! I wrote and article that we could use to take down Pulitzer once and for all.” She handed the paper over to David who scanned the paper and chuckled and smiled at Katherine brightly. “This is great Kath!” He handed the paper over to Jack as he started to read it. “Hey, Katherine can we use some of Jack's drawings to the paper?” He picked up the discarded drawings of Jacks and squealed. “This is perfect! A nail to put in the metaphorical coffin!” Jack drew his attention to both of his friends and spoke up. “But no pape is going to print this!” Katherine folded her arms and paced back and forth thinking. “There has to be at least one printing press that my father doesn’t control.” Jack scoffed “Oh, this is good. I know the perfect place. The printing press in the cellar of The World.” Katherine jumped up and clapped. “Perfect! You guys meet me there as soon as you can!” Katherine quickly scaled down the ladder as she had some important things to do! When they were sure they were alone Jack and Davey started laughing and held each other close. “Jackie, you gave me something to believe in too.” Jack gave him a toothy grin and kissed him once more and grabbed his hand. “I don’t know what this is but I want to give this shot. But right now, we have more important things to do. Let's go take down Pulitzer! David smiled and thought to himself. ‘I’m so glad I met this man. He makes me a better person.’ “Right after you Jackie!” Chuckling to himself, he held his hands out in a gesturing manner to the ladder. “What a gentleman! I may have been swooned!” Jack winked at him and started down the ladder. “Back at you Partner!” He winked back at him and followed him. Time to seize the day and take down Pulitzer together.
“An angel come to save me but didn’t even know he gave me something to believe in.”

Newsies’ Little Sister
Chapter 10 - Up In The Sky
TW: Abuse, Swearing, Mentions of Snyder and his lot, Sprained ankle, It’s a bit ooc
Word Count: 2k
Genre: Mostly fluff, with a touch of angst
Emmeline's POV
I sat up on the rooftops for a while, about 20 minutes; and feeling the strong wind on my face, I stood up and pulled the dirty rag that I stole out of my hair to let it loose. It flew in all directions, whipped into my face and streaked behind me like a kite.
I let out a long sigh and blocked out the entire world. Blocked out the noises of the city, blocked out the faint sounds of the train yards, blocked out the shouts from the streets below. It felt so good to be free for the first time! I laughed at the feeling and stepped closer to the edge of the building. It hurt a bit, y'know, breathing. But I'se had worse...much worse.
As I stepped forward again, I felt the pain in my ribs and on my face diminish slightly. And it was replace by a rush of adrenaline I felt like I could take on the world.
And no, I wasn't scared of falling. Not one bit.
~ Time Skip - 30 minutes before ~
Mush's POV
"Shit! This hurts like a motherfucker!" I was sitting on the main room floor, holding my right ankle tightly. It was twisted in a weird angle, and I had pain shooting all the way up my leg. I lifted my head and looked around. Snyder, Oscar and Morris were making their way back through the lodging house, shooting everyone bad looks. I shuffled back quickly as Snyder aimed a kick at me. He missed but I had to jump back sharply, resulting in more pains going up my leg.
We all watched them leave, and as soon as they were out the door, everyone turned to me. They were all looking at me like I knew what the hell happened! I had no idea what Em had gotten herself into, but I knew it wasn't good if she'd managed to rope in Snyder and the Delancey Brothers... Or maybe it was our parents...Maybe they had made a deal with Snyder. I knew, from Elmer, that she had learnt some skills. Like pickpocketing, but I didn't think Snyder would have any use for her. So why come looking? A thousand thoughts whirled around my head and I completely zoned out until...
Davey and Jack came and knelt beside me and had a look at my ankle, snapping me out of my daze.
"yeesh! That's gotta hurt..." Jack commented and looked away, grimacing slightly.
"Oh really. Hadn't noticed." I replied with as much sarcasm as I could bring to my voice, despite all the pain.
"I don't think it's broken, just badly sprained. I'm going to have to wrap it up." I nodded. "Hey Jack, have you got bandages, or some strips of cloth? Anything to wrap his ankle up?"
"Uhhh, yea. I'll go get some." Jack stood up and walked away.
"And Mush..."
"Yea?"
"Don't walk on it for a few days." I opened my mouth to protest, but he held up a hand to silence me. "I'm serious." I didn't dare contradict Davey when he was in full mum mode.
There was an awkward and confused feeling in the room and nobody spoke. Not even Race. I figured it was everyone thinking about that had happened not 10 minutes ago. In the silence, we all heard Jack's footsteps go up the stairs and into the main dorm.
Jack's POV
I went into the main dorm to get the bandages for Davey and Mush. They were all kept in a box in a cupboard near the bathroom stalls. On the way there I thought about why they were looking for her and about what Snyder had said to her. That she'd cost them a lot of money... I knew they were corrupt, but this was an all time low...
What had happened? What did she do? Can I trust her? What will they do if they find her? I had so many questions spinning around my head, swirling like the water in the river. But one stood out to me most: Is she going to put my boys in danger?
That question stuck in my head as I grabbed the cleanest bandage in the box and made my way back down and into the main room.
"Here."
Mush's POV
A few minutes later, I hobbled out of the lodging house with my ankle bandaged up and ones of Crutchie's old crutches. I managed to escape from Davey and out of the Lodging House. He said he'd keep an eye out for me, to make sure I wasn't going anywhere; but Les and I managed to distract him and I got out. All I wanted to do was fine Em. She took off after Snyder, Oscar and Morris left and none of us had any idea of where she was. Until we looked up...
I heard a few boys shouting and waving up at the rooftops, so I hobbled over to Romeo, who was standing closest to me.
"Ay! What's goin' on? Why ya yellin'?" I asked.
"Up there! It's ya sistah! She's gonna fall!" He answered back franticly. I turned and looked at where he was pointing; and sure enough, there she was, on the very edge of one of the tenement buildings. Arms stretched out, hair flying everywhere. She was so close to the edge that I thought she was going to fall too. I started yelling too.
"EM!!! EM! HEY!" It was no use, it was like she had completely blocked everything out. I looked around and tried to find a way up there, I found a way she could've gone up. But before I could start climbing, I felt a hand on my shoulder. I span around quickly and raised my fists to protect myself just in case.
"Hey!! Calm down! It's only me!"
"Davey! What the fuck! Ya scared me!" I lowered my fists and we both sighed in relief.
"Where are you going?" He asked.
"I'se going to..." I stopped half way through my sentence. Davey had that look on his face. The look he has where one of us is either going to do something stupid or has done something stupid.
"No." He raised a hand. "You're not supposed to be putting any weight through that ankle yet."
"But she's my sista! I have to help 'er!"
"She'll come down when she's ready." He replied calmly.
"No ya don't understand. I'se lost 'er once, I ain't losing 'er again..." Davey didn't say anything. He just laid a hand on my shoulder and I realised that he was right. Emmeline was always head-strong and independent. And Davey was right, she would come down when she wanted to...
"Fine...but if she isn't back by dark, I'se gonna go find 'er." I said. Breaking the silence that had built up around us. Davey nodded, and we went back to the lodging house, getting the other guys in with us.
Elmer's POV
I saw Mush and Davey come back out into the street and seeing the look on Mush's face, I guessed they were going to let her come down when she wanted to. It did make sense...but there was something inside me that wanted to make sure she was safe up there.
I knew exactly how to get up there because I used to go up there when I was bored; and I also knew the quick was out the back of the Lodging House. Now I just needed a quick way to sneak out.
Jack would never let us out on our own with the Delanceys and Snyder out there, but I would risk it for Em.
Anyways, we were all in the main room, sitting on various pieces of furniture, the floor and the hard sofa in the middle of the room. A few people were talking in amongst themselves and Race tried to start up a card game. But no one was interested... The Delanceys and Snyder had never actually come into the Lodging House before. Not fully anyways. They've come about 2 feet inside, but not run through chasing someone.
I didn't think anyone would notice if I left so I got up from where I sitting on the table. I made my way through the room to the door. A few people glanced my way but didn't do anything. As far as they were concerned, I was just going up to the dorm.
But I  was actually going up past the dorm and onto Jack's Penthouse. I looked over the city for a second. The sun was beginning to set and the smoke from chimney stacks was rising through the dying light. Davey and Mush were gonna go out to get her once it was dark, so I had to be quick...
I went and sat down with my feet over the edge of the railing. Then, I dropped down. Freefalling for a few seconds. I got a rush of adrenaline, then I landed on someone's roof, hard. I felt a jolt going up my left leg and I stumbled slightly. But that went as quickly as it came.
I made my way over the rooftops and through several washing lines. I reached the edge of the building and didn't look down this time. I launched myself into the air as the next building was both the one Em was on and about 2 feet higher than the one before.
I somehow managed to make it over and I quickly scrambled up. I stopped dead when I saw her standing on the edge of the building and not wanting to frighten her, I walked up near her and cleared my throat.
She jumped slightly, but recovered quickly when she realised it was only me.
Emmeline's POV
I got a shock when Elmer cleared his throat, but my head cleared when I realised there wasn't anyone else with him. I stayed where I was and he walked closer to me and sat down. I sat down with my feet over the edge of the building.
"Ya scared me Elmer..." I said, quietly. I wasn't good with any sort of surprise scares...
"Ha, yea...I just wanted to make sure that ya were alright...We all saw ya, standing on the edge. Ya looked like ya were gonna fall..." I nodded slowly.
"I felt like I was flying...for the first time, I felt like nothing I did in the past mattered and that no one could get to me..." I looked down. "I know it sounds stupid..."
Elmer's POV
"It felt like I was flying...for the first time, I felt like nothing I did in the past mattered and that no one could get to me..." I looked at her, smiling slightly. " I know it sounds stupid..."
"It ain't stupid at all...Ya've been through some terrifying shit and I know ya've never told me what they did to ya, but if ya ever need t--"
"I'll talk when I want to..." She turned her head off to the side away from me.
I looked at her and she turned her head back to me a bit. I gingerly put my hand on hers and her head snapped back to me, but she didn't move her hand away.
"When ya were up there, ya looked happy! For once...Hell, it was a bit scary, but down there, looking up at ya...It...it..." I stuttered and steadied myself. I was so nervous about what I was going to so I took a deep breathe. Go for it Elmer, I told myself.
"It reminded me...why I love ya..."

Can you teach me how to rp Morris, i’m really bad at it and it’s a problem
ok so this is super late BUT youre giving me a good excuse to put together my Morris Personality HC™ so thank u anon. i apologize that this is focused less on roleplaying him and more on writing him but. i think that’s close enough.
ok so if we’re looking at the script of the musical we know that Morris is a HUGE instigator. his lines, in order, are: “you want some of that too, ya lousy crip?” - “hey Oscar, looks like it was bum information we got about a strike happening here today. not that i’m complaining; i know my skull bustin’ arm could use a day of rest” - “hey, ya working or trespassing? what’s your pleasure?” - “shut it, ya stupid crip!” - “and now, we’ve been given discretion to handle you as we see fit. yeah, so behave.” - “you can sleep right here, on this old printing press. *SMACK SMACK* now that there is firm.”
a lot of his character is displayed through his physicality; when Race says his whole “it would be a pleasure to tell Weasel myself” line, the camera cuts to Morris and Oscar, and Morris does a sort of pointy ‘i’m watching you’ gesture; a lot of Morris’ threats are just physical gestures not included in the script. the way the actor plays him makes him seem a little less like a goon and more like a jerk older brother; constantly taunting and provoking the newsies, but not really rising to action unless he gets a reaction. every line in the script might have a threatening gesture accompanying it, but it’s like he’s daring the newsies to do anything and doesn’t really have a plan if they do take him up on it. when jack knocks the Delanceys down with Crutchie’s crutch, Oscar is immediately for retribution (“just wait till I get my hands on you!”) but Morris doesn’t respond at all; he follows his brother in chasing Jack, of course, but for someone who keeps talking big game he has no response for when the newsies actually fight back. this rule changes for Crutchie; out of the two Delanceys, Morris verbally and physically attacks Crutchie whenever he gets the opportunity. you can have your own interpretation as to why, but it isn’t excusable.
when he and Oscar are (presumably) hired by Pulitzer to intimidate Jack, Morris takes more of a hands-on approach; when they’re in the distribution yard, Oscar is the one that handles talking to the Newsies the most with little back-and-forth quips and jeers and such, while Morris only talks to them before work starts, either at the gates or just as they’re coming through them, or when his job is to beat on them. he seems to care about seeming responsible/mature when we see him working, whether for Wiesel or Pulitzer, but especially the latter, since that’s when he takes control of the situation the most; presenting the printing press to Jack, telling him to behave — Oscar only has one line in that scene, and that’s to add on to what Morris was saying with a threat (“but just in case, I’ve been polishing my favourite brass knuckles”). when compared to when he’s working for Pulitzer, it’s seems like he’s letting Oscar be the boss of the distribution yard by deliberately keeping out of things; now, I see Morris as the older brother (I have a post saying why) so I interpret this as Morris letting his baby brother do the cool stuff like handing out the papes and talking to the newsies while he handles the dirty work. whatever interpretation you choose, the point is that Morris very rarely speaks to the newsies when he starts working (i.e. after the gate has been unlocked.)
you may notice that literally every single line in the musical is him either instigating a confrontation or him taunting the newsies. if we look at the 1992 script (minus that one scene because dear god please do not use that scene for roleplay inspiration) its a lot more detailed in stage direction + it has a few different lines so we can learn a bit more about him!
the first direction in the script for Morris is for him to push past Jack with ‘deliberate aggression’. when Oscar pushes Snipeshooter to the back of the line, 'Oscar and Morris glare at the crowd, daring anyone to do anything about it.’ – basically that whole first scene with them is showing that they’re just stupid tough goons. in the scene where the Delanceys are chasing jack, at one point, when Morris has him, the script says 'Morris lifts him high into the air to smash him onto the cobblestones.’ However, this doesn’t happen in the actual scene; the only time in Carrying the Banner that’s remotely similar to this is when the Delancey’s are fighting Jack inside the circle of newsies, where Morris pushes Jack down and tackles him, showing him as the heavy-hitter of the duo, further enforcing that he’s the brother who gets his hands dirty.
later, when Jack gets the extra paper for Davey from Wiesel, Wiesel is PISSED and the script says that he backhands Morris (who isn’t even the one who gave Davey the extra paper). This doesn’t make it into the film either (probably because it’s kind of dark, GEE DISNEY DO YOU KNOW WHAT ELSE IS DARK) but it could point to Weasel being abusive towards the brothers.
morris, compared to oscar, seems super sadistic, especially when he grins at Crutchie before he and Oscar drag him off to the cops - and later in the script Crutchie fills us in that Oscar and Morris 'worked him over’ - either before or after turning him in.
we don’t see anything special specific to Morris again until a while later, after Jack becomes a scab; script says 'The Delanceys pass by; Morris grinning at him, bouncing a club in his hand.’
however, this isn’t accurate to the movie, as Morris has a blank, almost annoyed expression. this is significant due to Oscar’s next line: “come with us, cowboy. we’re gonna fix your pal Davey today — fix 'im so’s he can’t walk no more.” Morris tells him to shut up, which, in the script seems like it’s supposed to be said in a way akin to ‘shut up dude, we’re not supposed to tell him that’ but the way the actor delivers it seems more like ‘too far, shut up.’ watching the scene, you can see how Morris slowly shakes his head as Oscar speaks, and the ‘shut up’ is delivered as he pulls Oscar away from Jack. this line is the one that I’ve noticed most fans using to interpret Morris as more sympathetic. if you do want to play Morris semi-sympathetically or try to redeem him, this line is what you want to look at.
the next Delancey scene is weirdly violent and disgusting for Disney and i know it’s a cop-out but i tend to ignore it so i will not cover it here.
one last note is that after jack beats up the Delanceys for The Previous Scene Morris yells “Ya better run, cowboy – we’re tellin’ Weas! You’ll be back in the Refuge by supper time!” haha tattletale
some extra stuff that may or may not be canon: morris’ trading card reads ‘Born in SoHo and worked on the family farm. Abandoned by his parents, believes in survival of the fittest and sticks like glue to his brother, Oscar. They work with their Uncle Wiesel, keeping order at the distribution window of “The World”.’ it’s pretty likely that Mike Faist wrote this, but it’s nice to use as a kind of baseline for Morris’ characterization. Mike also says in the Meet the Newsies video for Morris that “deep down… y’know, really deep down, he’s actually like a really nice guy.”
across both versions of Newsies, we have these consistencies: Morris and Oscar work for their uncle Wiesel (they call him Uncle Weas in the movie), they fight with the Newsies at least twice, and they fight the most with Jack.
we also have the discrepancies: first, the ableism toward Crutchie. in the musical, both of the Delanceys (but mostly Morris) single him out from the other newsies specifically to bully and harass him for being disabled. Morris calls him stupid, assaults him, and calls him a slur twice. it’s obvious that he does this because he’s disabled. for example, Morris snatches his crutch away after Racetrack and Oscar start fighting (“ain’t your father one of the strikers? “guess he didn’t take care of me”) yet does literally nothing to Racetrack who’s the one that started it in the first place, not to mention that Crutchie really didn’t do anything besides stand nearest to Morris. in contrast, the 1992 version has a scene that basically mirrors this scene, except instead of Morris making Crutchie fall over by taking his crutch, Oscar shoves one of the very smallest newsies, Snipeshooter, towards the back of the line of newsies (“in the back you lousy little shrimp.”) Morris is of course still abrasive in the 1992 version, but the only time he SPECIFICALLY picks on Crutchie is when he’s literally the only one left in the distribution yard after the chaos, and Oscar and Morris are basically working in tandem at this point. Oscar kicks away Crutchie’s crutch, then they both drag him away by his shoulders — Morris does kind of menace Crutchie with his baton, but he doesn’t hit him. Throughout the entire movie (and the bar is touching the ground), at no point do Morris or Oscar call Crutchie a slur.
the ableist slurs and behaviours by Morris in the stage musical were probably included because there are basically no other opportunities to show the Delancey’s villainy, since Sarah isn’t a character and Jack never works for Wiesel — in regards to Morris’ personality and writing him, it’s probably meant to showcase either a superiority complex, his sadism (as evident in the 1992 film), or the ‘survival of the fittest’ mentality referenced in his trading card bio.
basically, when writing Morris I’d pick and choose from every one of his showcased aspects between both iterations, and I wouldn’t fall into the trap of trying to make him so sympathetic that he’s OOC. he’s mean, confrontational, vindictive, petty, violent; he looks out for his brother, tries to be responsible, and doesn’t seem to hold a grudge (especially against Jack). of course, since he’s supposed to be a one-dimensional Disney villain, you have to add some depth by yourself. for example, I headcanon that he’s older than Oscar to add a kind of asshole older brother dynamic. honestly, you don’t have to consider every single bad thing he’s ever done in canon when writing him; imo writing Morris is harder than writing Oscar because, since Morris is more stoic and physical than Oscar, it’s much harder to try and imagine his motivations and thoughts, much less build a personality that’s redeemable. Just imagine canon Morris as the skeleton and then build on top of it; don’t take away what he is OR how he’s hurt other characters, but build on top of it. just be prepared to think up a metric fuckton of headcanons.

Run
(Ooc: another thing I decided to write when no one asked for it. I’m trying to get my writing back on track also I want it out there, I’m gonna start a tag list so if you all wanna be apart of it send me a message)
Summary: Jane is running away from Synder and runs into Jack and becomes a Newsie (this is on mobile)
Inhala
Exhala
Inhala
Exhala
Inhale. Exhale. Just like your dad taught you. Your breathing was the key to being able to out run anything. You would never think that his knowledge would be put to good use, but today that knowledge was the only way to survive. You were running from Synder, the owner of the Rufuge, this was your 2 time in there but after 2 years you had enough and ran off. The problem was Synder found you and began to chase after you with the police.
Cmon Jane you can’t go back... not anymore.
“Come back here!” Synder yelled. He continued to yell hurtful things but you tuned them out and concentrated on your breathing instead. You decide to look behind you and see that you’re pretty far away from him that he can hardly see you, so you decide to make right turn into a new street. But suddenly you run into something and land flat on your butt.
“Woah, hey where you off to in such a hurry miss?” The boy who you ran into, about a year older then you, asks in an amusing tone.
You don’t answer because you’re out of breath so you just get up without saying a word and dust off the dirt from your pants, your breathing is labored and you turn around to see if Synder has gotten any closer. He takes a closer look at you and suddenly in a serious tone asks,
“Are you bein’ followed?”
Still out of breath you just nod. He doesn’t say anything for 10 seconds and finally says,
“Alright, come with me. But youse better still have some energy to run.”
And so you run with him for a minute. You no longer hear Synders taughts and remarks anymore, as this boy takes you to an undisclosed location. Once you two get there he leads you to a brick building, a sign that says
NEWSIES LODGE
Newsies. Those were those newspaper boys that you saw on the streets every now and then they had won the strike about a month ago. But he doesn’t take you to the inside of the building, instead he leads you to the roof.
“This here,” he waves around the area as you two get on top, “this here is my penthouse.” You weren’t quite sure what he meant but you didn’t question it.
“So... you got a name?” The boy asks as he leans lazily on the railing.
“It’s Jane, Jane Rivera.” You say as you take in the scenery. You never realized how wide the sky was since you were always just seeing the towering buildings of Manhattan. But now you could see everything.
“Well then Jane, tell me, who was after you?” He asks with concern.
“Some guy named Synder.” You didn’t expect him to know who that was but apparently he did, his reaction said it all.
“Youse... youse been to the Refuge?” He asks as he steps closer.
You lean on the rail looking at the streets, sure that Synder was still on a man hunt for you. “Yeah, this was my second time. The first time was for loitering of all things, then a few weeks afterwards he got me and told me I was ‘disturbing the peace’ when I got into a arguement with an old guy. It’s been two years...” you trail off thinking of all the horrible things that happened.
“Hey, don’t worry kid. I’ve been there.” You give him a puzzled look. Now that you weren’t in constant danger you began to notice his physical appearance. He was tall and had a good build, he work a blue buttoned shirt with a vest and you looked at his face and he began to look familiar.
“Ahh and where are my manners, the names Jack Kelly.”
Holy shit
“Oh you’re...” You begin to say. Jack Kelly was famous among the people in the Refuge, you heard all the stories more then once.
“Yeah yeah... but anyways I’ll tell ya what. Youse ain’t safe with Synder out there, hows about youse become a Newsie?” Jack offers.
You thought about it; you had no where else to go and no food or money.
I’ve got nothing better you thought
“I’ll take it.”
He began to smirk.
“Alright then, let’s go introduce you to the other boys.”
You two went down to the main area where all the boys were. They were all either playing cards or laying on their beds talking. But people got quiet once they saw you with Jack.
“Alright fellas!” Jack yells to get everyone’s attention. “I would like for you guys to meet Jane,” there were some whistles from some of the boys. You roll your eyes and give a small smile, “Jane here was having trouble with Synder the Spider. So’s we gotta help her, she’s gonna become a Newsie just like the rest of you guys.” There were some murmurs going around, you began to panick wondering if maybe it was a bad idea to do this.
“I think it’s a great idea.” You turn your head to see who said that. This tall slim boy who looked like he carried a pocket dictionary walked forward. He had a dirty blue checkered shirt on over his vest. “Well I mean, we do need new recruits right?” You gave him a smile, as a silent thank you, you looked around and everyone began to think and like the idea of you being a Newsie and some commotion began to stir but Jack settled them down before they got too loud.
“So it’s settled then, tomorrow, Jane youse start your first day as a Newsie.” Jack announced, he spit in his hand and you did the same and shook it.
That was nasty, you thought
“Jane I’d like you to meet Davey, he’s the brains of the whole operation.” You shook hands (no spit) with him.
“Pleasure to meet you.” Davey says as he gives you a smile.
“Nice to meet you too, thanks for that anyways.”
“Oh no problem these boys sometimes just need a push in the right direction.”
Jack begins to show you to a boy leaning on a bed post with a crutch.
“This here is Crutchie, he’s like my brother.”
“Nice to meet ya Jane!” Crutchie says, you knew you were gonna like him, he had such a big smile on his face. You could tell that he was one of the more sweeter kind of boys.
“Well aren’t ya gonna introduce me Jack?” A boy comes over and lazily put an arm around Jack’s shoulder and he immediately removes it. “Jane this is Racetrack my second in command.”
Race had a cigar in his hands and reeked of smoke, he analyzed you for a second and then said “Well Freckles glad to see we got a pretty face around here huh?” Oh this boy was trouble and you knew it from the second he opened his mouth.
“Freckles?” You ask? “Is that your attempt at giving me a nickname?” You answer back, he looks surprised at first but regains his smirk “Well doll it suits you! You em cute little freckles all over ya nose.”
You roll your eyes. Afterwards you go and talk to other Newsies who you learn all have nicknames as well, maybe having a nickname wouldn’t be so bad. Sure you were being flirted with by half of the Newsies there but you didn’t care. You had new friendships to create and a job, you could finally say you’ve had a home for the first time in a while.
Hope you guys like this and give me your opinion on it! <3

Hi Frida! I hope you're having a good day! I wanted to request a canon era Race x reader with the sort of "close friends become a couple" trope. Maybe with some platonic Elmer or Jack x reader too. Thanks!!!
Hi anon! Thank you so much! I'll try my best! Sorry if someone seems ooc, I'm still trying to get used to writing these characters! I hope you enjoy!---Overdue"You don't understand, guys! He's just too perfect for me! I mean, have you seen him?" You were sitting on your couch in your apartment with your best friends, Jack and Elmer. Your legs were stretched out over their laps and Elmer was playing with your shoe laces. "We've seen him, (y/n)." Jack sighs. "Yeah, we've seen the way he looks at you." Elmer teases. You throw a piece of popcorn at him and he slaps it away. Jack picks it up and pops it in his mouth. "Gross." "You're gross." "Guys, please!" You take your legs off of their laps and pause the tv where an episode of The Office was playing. "Race and I have been friends for almost a year now and we know basically everything about each other and I am hopelessly in love with him! Okay maybe not love, but you know what I mean!" You throw your hands in the air before letting them drop into your lap.Jack grabs one of your hands and Elmer moves from his spot on the couch and grabs your other hand before sitting on the floor in front of you. "Calm down. We know." Jack starts. "And we're gonna say the same thing we've been telling you for months." "He likes you too!" Elmer squeezes your hand as he says this. "But how do you know?" You ask. "Okay," Jack adjusts his seating position so he's facing you. "You know how I look at Davey?" You nod. Of course you do. Jack is head over heels for that dork. "That's how Race looks at you, hun." You look at Jack and then at Elmer. He nods. "Seriously?" "Yes." Jack and Elmer say at the same time. "Then why hasn't he asked me out yet?" "Maybe you should ask him." Elmer suggests. "What? No! I'd just fumble over my words and make a fool of myself!" "You talk to him every day without doing any of that." Elmer says, grabbing a handful of popcorn with his free hand. "Yes, because I haven't tried asking him out yet!" "(y/n), if I can ask Davey out, you can ask Race." "Yeah, remember when I told you that Spot and I were dating? You could hardly believe that I asked him instead of the other way around." Elmer says, beginning to play with your fingers. "True." "So, ask him out!" Jack says, letting go of your hand and wrapping an arm around your shoulder and shaking you a bit. "Fine! I will." Elmer let's go of your hand and fist pumps the air. "Heck yes! Finally!" Jack gives Elmer a high five and you rolled your eyes. Elmer grabbed the remote from the coffee table and unpaused the tv before sitting against your legs on the floor. You put your head on Jack's shoulder and he rubs your arm.You wake up the next morning to four texts from the group chat you're in with Elmer, Jack, Crutchie, and Davey.Elm Street - (y/n)'s asking Race out today!Crutch - What??? Really???Nerd - Finally!Santa Fe - well maybe not today but soon! You roll your eyes as you roll over in bed before typing out a reply.Fight Me - Elmer stop lying to people. I'll ask him when I'm ready.Elm Street - If u do that u'll never ask him!Nerd - Don't rush her, Elmer. Take as long as you need, (y/n).Fight Me - Thanks, Dave ❤Santa Fe - you promised you would ask him (y/n) don't break that promiseFight Me - I didn't promise shit! Maybe this could be your first date? It's not a big deal, honestly. It's only Race. He's your friend. And Elmer and Jack and basically all of your mutual friends say that he likes you too, so surely they're right... Right? Your heart speeds up as you see him when you turn the corner. He's outside of the restaurant, phone in hand. He looks up from his screen and smiles at you as you approach him. You can't help but smile back. “Hey.” He greets you as he pulls you in a hug. “Hey! How've you been these past 21 hours?” You pull away and look up at him. He's only a dew inches taller than you, but it's enough to have to tilt your head up when you're this close. You could really just close the gap now and kiss him. You took a step back. “They have been the worst 21 hours of my life,” He dramatically puts a hand on his forehead and lets out a sigh. “You're a dork.” “Yeah, I know.” A beat of silence goes by. “We should-” “Um, Race-” “Oh, go ahead.” “Um..” You take a breath before continuing. “Race, I uh… I was wondering…” Why is this so hard? “Uh, I was wondering if, maybe, we could, like, make this a, uh, a date?” Oh god oh god oh god- “Oh, really?” You look back up at him and see his bright blue eyes wide and bright. “Um, yeah?” His face grew a light shade of pink. “I mean, yeah, okay, sure. This can be a date.” He lets out a nervous laugh. “Wait, really?” You ask, not exactly sure what was happening right now. “Yeah.” He smiles at you and you feel your face heat up. “Okay.” “Okay.” He opens the door of Frey’s and you walk in. You shoot a text as you're being seated.Fight Me - Mission accomplished… kinda? We're on a date, so?? Yeah???Elm Street - HOMY SHGITSanta Fe - YESSSYEHSYSNerd - See, I knew you could do it!Crutch- Great job (y/n) :)You turn your phone off and look up at Race. “I think this date is long overdue, doll.” He grins and you could never not smile back. “I agree.”---That's it for now! It's a lot longer than I originally intended, but I think that's a good thing! If y'all want a part two, let me know! I might end up writing a part two anyway, but if that's something you want, shoot an ask my way! Thank you so much for reading! Reblogs are highly appreciated 💜
