Cloudy With a Chance of Friendship
@shinjuwahime liked for a starter!
“Ge~♪ Ge~♪ Gegege gero~♪”
“Ke~ro kekeke kero~♪ Kekeke kero~! ♪”
Toby sat next to the dual ponds, surrounded by frogs in the rain. One was even sitting on his head. Currently, they were doing a little concert. As his froggy friends wrapped up the chorus, Toby chuckled and croaked in satisfaction.
It was then that he was approached by the mayor of the town, Harley.
“Heeeey, Tobyyyyy!” Harley ran up to the rabbit, nearly stumbling and falling on their face as they tried not to step on any of the multiple frogs surrounding him.
“Hi, Harley! How can I help you?” Toby beamed. It was always a delight to see the mayor, though, at times, they were quite talkative. Ah, well. Toby liked the attention!
“Weeeeelll...” Harley drawled. They twirled their maple umbrella as they took a beat. “Do you think there’s any chance of it being sunny soon?”
“Mmm...nope~♪” Toby shrugged and made a face; Harley had taken to calling this expression “Cute Mouth Toby”. “I already predicted rain for a week, sorry about that.” The mayor pouted in response and adjusted the glasses they’d taken to wearing at all hours of the day.
“You sure? Because someone new just moved in, and it might be nice for them to experience Lluvlina while it’s sunny.”
“...ribbit?” Toby stared at Harley, his eyes glinting with curiosity. Bingo. Harley nodded and then sighed, shrugging.
“Yyyyup. I know that we both really like the rain, but that doesn’t apply to everyone...so...do you foresee any sun in the upcoming days?” Toby closed his eyes again and pursed his lips.
“Hmm...maybe. We’ll see later, ribbit.” The rabbit then took the frog sitting on his head and placed it on the ground, gently nudging it to suggest it go back to its pond. As it did, the other frogs followed suit. “Soooo...where might this new resident be?” There was a glint in Toby’s eyes.
“Oh, just over there,” Harley responded, pointing the way. Toby had already begun to leave in that direction when the mayor grabbed him by the shoulder. “Hey. Don’t forget your umbrella. Everyone else might be used to your weirdness, but she doesn’t know yet. Might wanna keep it in check for now.”
“Yeah, yeah, sure. Ribbit,” Toby waved his hand dismissively before pulling a ghost umbrella out of his pocket and continuing on his way.
-x-x-x-x-x-
Toby continued his trek to the new animal’s house, looking down and hopping in puddles along the way. Once he’d finally reached his destination, he took a long, hard look at the house. White and pink. And also...some gold? Hmm. Perhaps they had a bougie aesthetic, something he could personally get behind.
Making sure his ears were tucked underneath his umbrella, Toby rapped on the door gently, hoping that whoever was inside would answer.

Scooby-Doo! and the Witch's Ghost
Tumblr media
Original release date: October 5, 1999
Date watched: March 9, 2022
Runtime: 66 minutes
Synopsis: Horror writer Ben Ravencroft has invited the gang to his hometown of Oakhaven, Massachusetts. His ancestor, Sarah, was executed in the 1600s for supposedly being a witch, and he has been trying to clear her name. Making his job more difficult is the witch’s ghost that is haunting the town. Well, it turns out that was just a publicity stunt cooked up by the mayor to drum up tourism. Ah, well! Oh, wait, Scooby-Doo just dug up the book that will finally clear Sarah’s–oh wait, she actually was a real witch who used her powers for evil and her ghost has now been resurrected. Oopsie! Ben tries to convince her to rule the world alongside him but she decides to destroy everything as vengeance for her original execution. Thanks to the lead singer of the eco-goth band The Hex Girls being 1/16th Wiccan (???), she is able to trap Sarah back in the spellbook, although she drags Ben into it with him. A burning tree branch then falls on the book and burns it, confirming Ben Ravencroft as the first person to die in a Scooby-Doo movie.
Culprit: The movie subverts this really nicely, unmasking the initial witch as the town’s pharmacist, Mr. McKnight, about halfway through. And then surprise! Real witch.
Guest star(s): Tim Curry as Ben Ravencroft, Jennifer Hale (2) as Thorn, Jane Wiedlin (of The Go-Go’s) as Dusk, Kimberly Brooks (Ashley in Mass Effect, Jasper in Steven Universe) as Luna
Trivia: The original screenplay for the film ended with the revelation of the first witch being fake–everything involving the real witch’s ghost was added onto that.
Ratings
Spookiness: A little less harrowing than Zombie Island, Witch’s Ghost still has several frights that would give any child nightmares. Take your pick: pumpkin monsters using vines to grab your ankles and drag you away, a giant turkey extending its neck to try to bite you, or a vengeful spirit attacking you with blasts of fire. It’s clear that the creative team wasn’t given as much leeway as they were in the previous movie, but they still do a lot with what they have. MARINA: 3.5 LAURA: 4
Characterization: A lot like how Harley Quinn originated as a character exclusive to Batman: The Animated Series and then became so popular that she started appearing frequently outside that series, The Hex Girls are easily the most iconic original characters from any Scooby-Doo movie. They went on to appear in another Scooby movie and three Scooby TV shows. Hot Topic launched a clothing line based on them last year! Their presence alone is enough for a 5 in this category, but let’s not forget we had a Tim Curry-voiced antagonist who’s a pastiche of Stephen King, and a real witch’s ghost with big titties and a booming Tress MacNeille voice. I actually have to break the scale for this one. MARINA: 6 LAURA: 5
Overall: The only possible knock I can think of for this movie is that it treats Wicca like a…race? That said, Laura did point out that maybe that’s just how it works in the Scooby-Doo universe since, you know, magic is real and all. Otherwise, this really is basically the platonic ideal of a Scooby-Doo movie. It even has beautiful animation at times, especially during the climax. There are a lot of reasons this one is a cult classic. MARINA: 5 LAURA: 4.5
Outlandishness: This is the first Scooby-Doo movie with a body count. Like, I’m not even sure if describing it as “Ben Ravencroft died” is even accurate. He was dragged, kicking and screaming, into his dead ancestor’s spellbook by his dead ancestor’s ghost. And then the book caught fire and turned to ash. Is he in Purgatory? Is he in a realm between life and death? Did the powers that be see fit to show him mercy and let him die, or will he exist in unending agony and isolation until the end of time? Any time a Scooby movie elicits these questions, that’s a 5. MARINA: 5 LAURA: 5
Brevity: At a mere 66 minutes, this clocks in as the shortest Scooby movie yet, even shorter than the baffling Arabian Nights. That’s a crime. I would have liked a little bit more time with the witch’s ghost. This is officially the first Scooby movie that I wish was longer. That keeps it from getting perfect marks in this category. MARINA: 4.5 LAURA: 4.5
Final ratings: MARINA: 4.8 LAURA: 4.6

Revolvertale arc.0 ch.8
Asgore puts the file on the table without reading it “A live presentation is a good idea.” Dr. Gaster sets the flies in the file cabinet “Of course, ma’am and sir” He closes the cabinet and walks to the door “Follow me, please.” Asgore and Toriel get off the chairs and look at Dr. Gaster. Asgore puts his hat on and grabs his cane “Lead the way, doctor.” Dr. Gaster opens the door, leading Asgore and Toriel to Papyrus’s testing chamber “Here is the testing chamber we use to test my son’s magical abilities.” Asgore observes the room from behind the one-way mirror and sees Papyrus already in the testing chamber “Impressive work, doctor. May we see how his abilities work?” Dr. Gaster slightly nods his head “Of course, sir” he walks to the table with the microphone on it, presses the button on it, and leans close to the mic “Papyrus, can you show our guests what you learned?” Papyrus nods and starts showing the things he made and learned to his father, Asgore, and Toriel.
Amazed by Papyrus’s performance, Toriel looks at Dr. Gaster “Your child is impressive, doctor. You must be really proud of him.” Dr. Gaster trunks and looks at Toriel “Thank you, lady Toriel. And yes, I am proud of him.” Asgore looks at Dr. Gaster as well. “Are there limits to his abilities?” Dr. Gaster shifts his gaze to Asgore “There are limitations or drawbacks we discovered during testing that seems to be common among fire monster hybrids” Asgore raises an eyebrow “What are they, doctor?” Dr. Gaster looks at Papyrus and sighs “Excessive usage of fire abilities leads to burn or scorch marks on the limbs used to channel them, mild suffocation due to lack of oxygen, dizziness, and passing out due to high body temperature. Which shows that the offsprings of a fire monster and another monster lack the fire immunity and only have the resistance to fire to some degree” He presses the button again “That’s enough for today, Papyrus. Go meet with your friends” Papyrus stops, sits down, catching his breath. “I will after I catch my breath, Dad.” He stands and teleports out of the room.
Asgore rubs his beard with concern showing on his face “Those are worrying discoveries.” He looks at Dr. Gaster “Are those tests to find a way to ease the effects?” Dr. Gaster turns, facing Asgore and Toriel “With our current technology, I don’t know. But we will try to find solutions to it.” Toriel walks to Dr. Gaster and puts both of her hands on his shoulders “I’m sure you and the other scientists will do the best you can.” She moves her hands off and smiles “Now, if you excuse us, Doctor. We will take our leave” She turns and looks at her husband. Asgore smiles and tips his hat “Thank you for the little tour, Doctor.” Dr. Gaster nods slightly and puts a smile “You’re welcome, mayor Asgore and lady Toriel” He watches the two leave the room, sits on a chair, and sighs “That went better than expected. Nonetheless, it’s better than the alternative” He stands and glares at his watch “And it didn’t take long too. I can go back to my work and refine the harvesters” He rests his hand on the chair and rubs his chin. He walks out of the room and heads to his workshop.
In the lab’s auditorium, Alphys shows off the prototype of the ghost-powered body to her mother and some of the available scientists “And to show a demo run of how the body works, I have my friend Harley to show us” Harley feels the glares of the scientists going through her as she possesses the body, the body activates and Harley’s soul appears in the body's abdominal area.
Alphys shifts her gaze from her friend to the scientists and her mother “As you can see the body only works when a ghost monster possesses it as it is powered by the soul’s energy. And can gain energy from eating solid food to replenish the used energy from the owner’s soul” Dr. Amelia rests her clipboard on her lap and looks at her daughter “Are there other implementations for the robotic body?” Surprised by her mother’s question, Alphys composes herself and turns her attention to her mother “There will be other implementations for it. But as of now, this is a mere prototype model for civil usage with the mayor’s approval. Of course, that will be for newer models, not for this model.” Dr. Amelia hums for a bit and shifts her gaze to Harley “Can you do a movement test, Ms. Harley?” Harley nods to Dr. Amelia, walks around the stage, and performs physical exams to see the body's limitations.
Dr. Amelia and the other scientists write what they observed and ways to improve the design. The scientists collect their notes and hand them to Dr. Amelia, their department's lead scientist. Dr. Amelia stands and looks at both girls “That would be enough, ladies. Your presentation was delightful. We will discuss the manufacturing and implementations of your project with Dr. Gaster and Mayor Asgore.” Overjoyed by what her mother said, Alphys keeps her calm demeanor and smiles “Thank you for time, doctors” She and Harley excuse themselves and exit the auditorium.
Papyrus waits awkwardly with John outside of the auditorium “Sooo, sir, how old is your daughter, Undyne?” John gives a sharp glare to Papyrus causing Papyrus to flinch “She’s 9 years old” Papyrus nervously looks to the side as he feels a chill running down his back “She’s a year older than my little brother sans” John nods slightly and sees Alphys coming out with her friend “How did it go?” Alphys’s wide smile and her excited jump show how her presentation went “It went great. There is a chance they will accept my project-” She glares to the side, sees Papyrus, and blushes right away “A..” Papyrus chuckles a bit and looks at Alphys “That’s great. Mind if we talked alone, Alphys?” Alphys comes back to her senses with a slight blush on her face “S-S-Sure. B-but first I need to do something” She turns and faces Harley and John “Thank you for helping me with my project” John smiles and pats Alphys “You are welcome, Alphys.” He straightens his posture and looks at both Alphys and Harley “I will be waiting for you two outside the lab.” He leaves both Alphys and Harley with Papyrus.

Written and Directed by J. J. Abrams and Andrew Hussie, this live-action spectacle will follow the adventure of older John Egbert (Michael Cera), joined by his mentors Cameron Poe (Me), suspiciously similarly named Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and Garland Greene (Steve Buscemi).
Other heroes include Rose Lalonde (Landry Allbright), Dave Strider (Donald Glover), Jade Harley (Auliʻi Cravalho), Karkat Vantas (Shia Labeouf), Kanaya Maryam (Ellen Page), Terezi Pyrope (Emma Watson), Jane Crocker (Maggie Smith), Roxy Lalonde (Megan Fox), Dirk Strider (Michael B. Jordan), Jake English (Dwayne Johnson), Calliope (Jennifer Lawrence), MSPA Reader (Snoop Dogg), Dante Basco (Himself), Vriska Serket (Herself), Andrew “Big Man” Hussie (Andrew “Big Man” Hussie), the Mayor (Andy Serkis), Jack Noir (voiced by Jack Black), and Serenity (voiced by Alan Tudyk). Additional cast: Sweet Bro (Ben Stiller), Hella Jeff (Owen Wilson) and Geromy (Will Smith).
Together we face against Dark Cage (Also Me) and his monstrous master, cybernetically reanimated John Malkovich (Cyrus “the Virus" Grissom), who has been possessed by the main antagonist of Homestuck, the evil Lord English.

After five years in production, we are glad to reveal you this passion project. CON AIR 2: THE EPILOGUE will be streamed live on repeat for the entirety of 4/13/2019, but you are encouraged to go see it in the theaters to catch the theaters-exclusive Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff: Cinematic Experience, 15-minute intermission splitting the 3-hour movie in half.
Don’t forget to consider the special Marathon Runs, where the Intermission is repeated unchanged for at least 5 consecutive hours! After seeing one of these visceral interpretations, I recommend you do the same. In the Sicknasty Edition the Intermission will last for 34 hours! Talk about an experience! If you happen to die during that particular showing, don’t worry, we will pay for your funeral.
Do remember though, if you agree to watch one of these extended cuts, there’s no backing out. After papers are signed and all is done, the theater doors will be locked. You will not be able to leave until the movie is over, so pack snacks! They will not only be useful to sustain yourself, but also as offerings to save your life from the dehydrated, starving viewers that did not reserve provisions and are now after your flesh and blood. You would not believe what has gone down in some of our test screenings!
I sincerely hope you will enjoy our CREATION. You have ONE MONTH. What will you do?
Sincerely, Nick of Time

“Ask your friends in the neighborhood about me. They’ll tell you I know how to return a favor.”
Mafia AU
They called her Crazy Maggie.
But not to her face, they say the last guy that did lost an eye.
All of this was rumor however. In reality Maggie would just be rude right back if you called her that nickname.
But Maggie came from a family of crazy this was true. Crazy sisters locked up in the state penitentiary. Crazy great grandmother whispering who knows what secrets to Godfather Blackwood.
Juno called Maggie reckless. “You keep walking around doing stupid shit and you’ll never get ahead bird brain. This is why father won’t ever give you your own crew.”
Vespers however called Maggie talented. “Though for the love of Pete can you bother to iron your skirts? You’re a mess.”
Maggie called herself curious. Before Vespers took her on she was a street kid with an ear to the ground, and she could hear everything. Which pockets had cash, which footfalls belonged to a cop. Since joining the family her talents altered slightly. They still needed her ear, but on her days off Maggie preferred to cure her curiosity with another contribution.
How a redhead gets places unnoticed even she had no idea. But Maggie could get in anywhere and she often chose the most dangerous of places. Police precincts, fancy parties, the businesses of other mob families. Much like her great grandmother Maggie had a knack for collecting secrets that she could pass on to the boss.
Mayor is having an affair? Oh that would be a shame if the whole city knew.
Police chief takes bribes? That’s rather handy to know.
Someone has money troubles? How about a loan?
To be honest Boss Peregrine knew it was only a matter of time before she was a liability and often scolded her for that. But he never stopped her.
Maggie was as curious in nature as she was curious looking. If you actually paid attention to her being in the room.
…….
Coralline sat at the bar casually sipping a drink, a frown on her face as she did so. Nothing got past her in the family casino. And there was a curious stranger with them tonight.
Coralline watched a young woman with bright red hair piled up into a messy bun. Her skirts were old and faded, her heeled boots were so worn they made no sound on the floor. A tattered black- feather boa was wrapped around her arms. The woman was slouched up against the wall in a shadowy corner, then she was calmly walking this way and that between the tables. At one point she had acquired a champagne tray and obediently stood as several guest helped themselves and chatted. Her head was down but eyes glittered with interest, she was listening.
Coralline mused over how someone that off looking could act so invisible. She motioned for Harley to come over and gave a nod in the direction of the stranger.
“Harley do we know who this is?”
Harley frowned, “no ma’am but I do believe I see a pin on her jacket.”
Indeed on the lapel of the stranger’s jacket was a small silver pin, a thistle.
Ah, so she was a spy then.
Coralline snapped her fingers for Abraham, “Do be a dear and collect our guest will you?”
Maggie smiled to herself at the particular bit of information she had just heard when she felt a firm grip on her shoulder. She looked up to see a giant of a man looking down at her with a sneer.
“Oh wow, you’re tall.” Was all she could say in her surprise.
Coralline looked down at the shorter woman brought before her, “not what I would usually expect for a spy if I’m honest.”
The redhead shrugged, “I’m more curious than anything. Want to know what I know?”
Coralline smirked, “oh you’re going to have plenty of time to tell me everything shortly.”
The redhead frowned, “perhaps we can reach a more applicable arrangement? Ask your friends in the neighborhood about me. They’ll tell you I know how to return a favor.”
Coralline waved her hand and the woman was dragged off, ending the conversation.
A half hour later and Coralline was making her way to the interrogation room. A lovely little spot with no windows and only one door in or out. Abraham nodded and stepped aside to let Coralline in.
“So how has your stay be-“
The room was empty.
Coralline looked around in confusion, how could she possibly have gotten out?
All that could be found however was a hastily written note on a scrap of paper.
“Nice casino. Card counting at the blackjack table, man with striped fedora.”
-Maggie ;)
Coralline crumpled up the note before calling for Harley.

Jeremiah Valeska x Reader - Harley Quinn Part 1
Requested on Wattpad
Reader is Bruce's sister and has been training with him and meets Jeremiah when he is normal. They like each other and when he goes through the transformation he becomes obsessed with her, turning her into a Harley Quinn-esque girl.
PART 2
Tumblr media
Good and Evil. I wish things were that simple, everything is always good or bad or right or wrong. Except Gotham. Gotham is in a constant state of murky grey. Good and evil aren't a concept that exist in Gotham, everything is cloudy. This was made abundantly clear as the tv screen portrayed the events currenlty taking place. Jerome was holding Gotham elites, including the mayor, hostage with bomb collars around their necks. Jerome was the definition of unclear, he was neither good nor evil, he just was. His nefarious actons had always been spurred on by his mothers abuse, so was he really evil? Or was he just wronged?
Shaking my head, pulling away from my confusing thoughts, I sat up and stared intently at the tv screen with my brother, Bruce, by my side. I couldn't reminisce on my past. On Jerome. I had to move on, it was the best choice I could make in such a strained position. I had to be the good in Gotham.
"Y/N Wayne!" Hearing my name, my eyes focused on the screen, coming out of the haze I was in to fully understand what was happening.
"Y/N." Bruce gasped, looking at me with horror filled eyes, my confusion growing as to why he was scared until I realised that it had been Jerome who called my name. He wanted me.
"You can't!" He shot up out of his seat before I could fully comprehend his actions, pulling me into a tight hug and muttering how he couldn't lose me.
It made sense, why Jerome would want me. I was the only person to ever, ever show him any kindness or sympathy. I had met him at the cirus, I had took pity on him and thanks to my too large heart, I had befriended him. Then he butchered his mother. I could never be with a monster, it was wrong. Gotham may be coated in corruption, but I would not let myself be. I had trained for weeks with Bruce, training and training, fighting harder and harder to be the good that Gotham needs. Since Jerome had come back to life, my life has been a whirlwind: he kidnapped me, professed his eternal love, tried to get me to join him and finally, my brother caught him therefore sentencing him to Arkham.
BANG!
A loud, sickening explosion sounded drawing my attention back to the screen as Jerome detonated one of the bombs. I flinched, my body rigid as I took in the sight of the dead, decapitated body.
"Bring me my brother, bring me Wayne. Bring them now." He spoke calm, humor in his voice before he broke off laughing hysterically.
"I have no choice Bruce." I spoke, my voice breaking slightly as I hugged him back, knowing that I had no choice in this. I would not let more innocent people die.
"I watch the news, I know why you're here Mr Gordon and you must be out of your mind if you think I'm going to be led like a lamb to the slaughter." Jeremiah, Jerome's twin, spoke as he poured himself a glass of whiskey. The resemblance unnerved me slightly, but I remained where I stood, I couldn't be afraid.
Jim Gordon, Mr Fox and I had come to enlist Jeremiah to help us take Jerome down. They had built a device to block the signal to the bombs. I didn't want Jerome to die, but I couldn't let anyone else die because of his obsession with me, something had to be done.
"I understand your concern, but your brother doesn't bluff. If we ignore his demands, there's no telling what he might do." Gordon spoke in a persuasive way, trying to get Jeremiah to agree to risk his life.
"We can block his remote signal with this." Fox reassured as he showed the device he had built.
"If you and Y/N can get within a few feet of him," Gordon began, taking a sterner tone as Jeremiah scoffed as took a gulp of his whiskey," It will disable his remote, he will be a sitting duck, our snipers can take it from there."
"For gods sake Gordon, you have to know what he wants! To murder us both on live television." Jeremiah cried, frustrated at the situation.
Taking a deep breathe, I took a step towards him before speaking, "Mr Valeska, I'm Y/N Wayne. It's a pleasure to meet you."
Reminding myself to be polite, I outstretched my hand in greeting, smiling gleefully as he took my hand and shook it with his surprisingly soft one.
"Likewise. I wish the circumstances were better." My confidence returned as I saw how polite he was to me, how kind unlike his brother.
"May I ask what you've been working on?" I questioned, genuinely curious.
"Um...yeah. It's a compact electrical engine. It generates power." He clarified, staring intensely at me causing me to blush and try to hid my face with my hair.
"How much power?" I asked, coughing to get rid of the annoying blush. I had never blushed in front of anyone before, I don't know why I did in front of him.
"Just two collide of every building south west of the bridge." His words shocked me, that was a lot of buildings, a lot of power.
"You have a brilliant mind. I know why you don't want to come, I'm scared too. I don't want to let him win, I can't. There are good people left in Gotham and I won't let anyone die because of me. I understand if you decide not to come, but you would be letting him win. We need to be stronger. We are stronger." I stepped closer to him, looking up at him with nothing but hope in my eyes, watching him debate my words.
"Well said." He smiled at me, about to speak again before Gordon's phone rang, interrupting us.
"Harvey?" Gordon spoke into the phone, turning away to concentrate on the phone call. My face light up with a smile as Jeremiah shrugged his suit jacket on, proving that he would come.
"The Penguin told me about a new scarecrow toxin. Head over to the lab, we're on our way to the square. They've got a weapon: poison gas." He spoke with dread after a minute of silence as he listened to Harvey on the other end, horror engulfing his features as he turned to inform us of the new information.
"Okay, let's go." Jeremiah spoke, gulping nervously before leading the way out of his maze. I swallowed hard, clenching my fists before following after him.
"WHY ARE WE WAITING?! WAITING, WAITING, WAITING, SOMEONE'S GONNA DIE-!"Jerome shouted into the microphone, playing the guitar, coming to a sudden stop as he saw me approach with Jeremiah and Gordon.
"Well, look who decided to show up. We were starting to get nervous. Especially the mayor here." Jerome snickered, pointing over his shoulder at the trembling mayor.
"My guests of honour. Please, take your seats on stage. Come on, don't be shy." He gestured to the two seats in the middle, grinning wickedly at our reluctance.
Moving forwards slowly, I noticed Jeremiah frozen in place. I turned, nodding in reassurance as I had the hidden device in my pocket. We would be okay.
"Hi brother." Jerome snarled, smirking as his twin stepped closer to the stage, the crowd backing away from him.
Loud gunshots caused me to freeze as the crowd crouched down in fear of getting shot, I frantically looked up to see Gordon's snipers dead. We had no backup.
"I had my guys take up the best advantage spots last night. So, they've been watching your little swat team all day. Now Y/n, brother dear, get up on stage. It's time to get this party really started huh?" Jerome laughed, watching as we resumed our walking, fast approaching the stage.
I frowned when I reached the stage first, slowly ascending the steps. Just as I made it to the top, Jerome grabbed my arm, pulling me into him and whispering in my ear.
"Hiya Y/N. Long time no see. I missed you. I have a surprise for you." I tried to pull away from him but he simply laughed, shoving me to one of his followers as Jeremiah stepped onto the stage, a strange look burning in his eyes as he watched us. I didn't have time to dwell on the look however, as the follower who had a hold of me shoved me into one of the chairs, strapping a bomb collar around my neck, Jeremiah following after.
"No parent will admit it, but everyone's got their favourites. Right, brother?" Jerome demanded, glaring at Jeremiah as he took a seat between us, the crowd silent.
"The one who cleans their room. Does their homework. Doesn't try and kill everybody. Little mister perfect here. Yeah, he was that guy. He got adopted by rich folks, went to the top schools, the top college. Meanwhile, I got dragged through the circus by my depressed alcoholic mother. Forced to clean up elephant dung everyday." He growled when someone in the audience shouted 'who cares'.
"Do you know how big those things are folks?" He turned to look at me before looking back at the terrified crowd. His story made the pit in my stomach grow, he was not born bad, he was made bad.
"But I knew something mommy and daddy never knew. You're as crazy as I am. It's in your DNA." Jerome spoke calmly, standing up and taking out a switch blade, advancing on Jeremiah as he struggled in his restraints. All I could do was watch as my hands were bound.
"You see, we have the same blood running through us. We are practically identical. You are a killer. It's in your nature." Jerome pointed the knife in Jeremiah's face before he cut the ropes restraining his wrists.
"Stop trying to fight it." Jerome placed the knife in Jeremiah's hand, stepping back and spreading his arms in a surrender motion. Daring Jeremiah to attack him.
"Don't." I muttered, the word only loud enough for the twins to hear. Jerome smirked at my attempt whilst Jeremiah gave a battle cry and ran at him only to be knocked to the ground by Jerome punching him.
"Stop!" I cried, trying to escape my restraints as Jerome laughed and continued to relentlessly kick his brother. Gunshots made him finally stop, looking up only to get shot in the shoulder by Gordon causing him to fall backwards. Firefly stepped out and shot fire at Gordon as I finally managed to break the zip ties like Alfred had showed me in our training.
Running at her, I shoved her with all my strength, wincing as she fell down the stairs roughly.
"Sorry!" I called out before running to Jeremiah as the crowd scattered and Gordon chased after an injured Jerome.
"Are you okay?!" I pleaded for him to be okay, lifting him gently by his shoulders as he clutched his ribs where Jerome had viciously kicked him.
"I-I'm okay. Thank you." He whispered, standing up and adjusting his glasses. The way he looked at me caused my blush to return.
"I-I should go home. Bruce will be worried about me." I cleared my throat and stepped back from him, going to walk off stage to ask a police officer to take me home.
"Wait!" He gently grabbed my arm, pulling me back to him, blushing himself as he pulled me into his chest, "I'll walk you home. Jerome could have people after us."
"Thank you." I smiled, casting my nervous gaze to the ground as we made our way off the stage together.

Chapter 3 - The Hard Sell
It’s strange that the first thing I thought about was whether or not I should return to my apartment (now that it was no long inhabited by Zyglavis).
The sentimental part of me wanted to be comforted by all things familiar, but it was for that reason and that reason alone that I pushed myself to follow through and stay at Meg’s. My problem had been that I’d gotten too comfortable, both in my relationship and with other men whose affections towards me felt like a constant.
Between my time in otomeville and my time back home with Zyglavis, I had forgotten what it was to be truly alone. It was unsettling, returning this place where no one was thinking of me. As fiercely independent as I once was, I was now a domesticated version of myself - lost and weak and without a shoulder to cry on.
I had drawn strength from these relationships without even realizing it and now that they were gone I felt as if I was adrift at sea.
I took my phone out and sent a text to each of the otome men in my phone. It was a total Hail Mary on my part, and I had absolutely no expectation that I’d get a reply so when Leon immediately texted back I felt slightly relieved. He and I had never been close or even liked one another for that matter, but knowing that there was at least one person in this world who understood my history reinvigorated my drive to win the king’s new game.
We met a few hours later by his apartment for dinner, and I filled him in on everything that had happened.
“That makes sense,” he mumbled. “The last time I came by your place I could tell that Zyglavis was keeping something from me. It must have been the return of his powers…”
“And yours?” I asked hopefully.
Leon shook his head, “No. I could feel the king’s presence but I am not the God I once was in my world.”
I felt my heart sink as I kissed goodbye access to in-game cheat codes that Leon’s godly version possessed. In the hours before our meeting, it had started to sink in that this was going to be much harder than my first attempt had been at romancing otome men.
For starters, three months was not nearly enough time if you considered the fact that I still had to work most days. In otomeville, my days had been free to research and run about the city as I looked for clues and went on dates before finally getting myself home.
Now, both myself and the men were theoretically working 9-5s, Monday through Friday (if not more) and I still had no idea who that fifth mystery guest might be. As much as I hated it, I’d already re-activated my Tinder account (seeing as how the king had made it fairly explicit that I’d be needing to find the men in this world through conventional means) and I’d also downloaded Bumble, OkCupid, and Hinge figuring that the more apps I was on, the more chances I’d have in finding them.
I had hoped that Leon’s powers were back and that he could snap his fingers and cut through some of the noise, but it was becoming clearer and clearer that I was going to really need to strategize in order to find the most effective plan to locate and win the hearts of these men. Finding them would be only half the battle - I worried not only about the fact that they were all so attractive every woman in NYC was no doubt swiping right and without my advantage I was just another face in the crowd.
There was nothing particularly memorable or beautiful about me, and on apps like Tinder, superficial first impressions remain king. It was for that reason and that reason alone that I shared my profile with Leon. He tapped through my profile photos and with a scoff read my bio.
“No, this will never do. Don’t you have anything more…I don’t know…personable?”
“What do you mean?”
“Look at these - you’re just so…forgettable.”
“Hey!”
“You don’t have time to get upset Goldfish. Think. You need to find 5 men - what do they like? Why would they swipe on you? Right now you’re just another smiling face and you know it. Think.”
As tough as it was to hear Leon validate my feelings, I soon found myself searching for particular photos I knew I had in the annals of my facebook.
I started by finding a photo from 3 years ago at a motorcycle show I’d attended for work when Harley Davison was one of our clients. I hoped Hiroshi would see that and swipe right, knowing how much he loved motorcycles. For Soryu, I found a picture that he’d actually taken of me a month ago as I successfully completed my most challenging lift. I hoped that would also appeal to Jin and Hijikata, but taking no chances I added photos from a trip that I’d taken a fears years back at a traditional a Japanese temple long before I’d fallen down a rabbit hole to a bizarro version of the place. I also found a photo from halloween where I was dressed up as a sexy lady cop (something I’d hoped never to publicly share but figured that desperate times called for desperate measures).
Not knowing who the mystery fifth man was, I opted to use the last 2 of the 6 pictures Tinder allowed to appeal to Zyglavis.
The king had so cruelly wiped all my devices of our shared photos but for whatever reason had not taken ones of just me (such as all the solo shots he had taken of me on his birthday). In the photo I selected, I was holding up a chocolate ganache cake I’d made for him from scratch with a warm smile on my face. His birthday had happened before any of our problems had really started, and as a result it was clear as day by the way I looked at the camera that I was in love with the man who was holding it.
For my final picture, I recovered another photo that Zyglavis had taken at Maya and Omar’s wedding. In it, I’m wearing a form fitted dress, holding a slice of wedding cake, and smiling at the camera.
Leon nodded approvingly at my changes and noted, “What about the bio?”
I chewed on my bottom lip as I thought for a moment and then wrote the following: “We will be lost and found a thousand times on this cobbled road of us.” - Atticus
Leon chuckled and noted, “A little heavy handed but I like it. It’s a bit of a riddle and it speaks to the situation. Perhaps it might jog a lost memory or feeling.”
I smiled in an attempt to hide how overwhelmed I felt. I was starting over in such a big way and it felt daunting to be at the starting line again. Leon saw through my fake smile and awkwardly noted, “It’ll be fine.”
“Will it? The king is right - without the advantage...”
“It pains me to say this but your problem with the men in this world has nothing to do with you and everything to do with how you view yourself.”
“Come on, you’ve seen the women in this city and -“
“Naomi, you make it hard for me to believe you’re competent at your job. You’re in marketing, no? You must understand the concept of selling a product.”
“Of course I do!”
“In dating, you’re the product. Why would I want to buy a product that believes that all the women around her are better? Men don’t need a lot of convincing if you’ve already decided you’re inferior on your own. They’ll just take your word for it and go look for something better.”
Once more, though Leon’s words cut deep in my heart I knew he was right.
Dating in this world (before I’d found myself living in a fantasy) had robbed me of my confidence. As time went on, I found myself believing less and less that I’d ever find happiness and that in itself proved to be a self-fulfilling prophecy of sorts.
I wondered when it was that I started feeling this way which conjured memories from previous heartaches and feeling of inadequacy created by men who were too emotionally stunted to ever be a real partner in the way that I wanted.
As my mind mulled over the root of these problematic beliefs I held for myself, Leon continued, “The ego of man is a fragile one. Far more fragile than that of a woman’s feelings. If you believe that you are the best product a man can have, he will believe it too. Courtship is the perfect balance of self confidence and affirmation. You use your looks to make the first impression, then you show off a product that is so highly desired you wouldn’t ever settle for the first bidder, yet you maintain clear interest by expressing a reasonable level of affection somewhere between total indifference and complete thirst.”
“What do you mean?”
Leon sighed, annoyed that I didn’t have the tools to unpack what he felt was obvious and said, “Just find a way to casually tell a man he’s handsome. That word is kryptonite for men - it can be used in a familiar way without coming across desperate but at the same time makes it obvious that you find them attractive.”
“Leon…you’re really good at this.”
Leon shrugged, “I suppose a millennia of hearing the wishes of men makes it fairly obvious what they desire most.”
“Seriously. You’ve opened my eyes to something I couldn’t figure out from years of therapy. You should teach classes or something.”
“No time. Besides, that would only get in the way of my political career.”
“Your what now?”
With a cocky grin Leon polished off the rest of the beer that was sitting in front of him and said confidently, “The next few months will be busy for me. I plan to run for mayor here. You goldfish need someone like me in charge!”
I let out a laugh and it was oddly comforting to see that even though much had changed in the course of a weekend, Leon’s arrogance would remain a constant in my life for the foreseeable future.
That night I found myself in Meg’s guest room on Tinder.
I’d forgotten how tedious the process of weeding through such a large pool of men could be. There were the guys that were an obvious no, with profiles that made it clear they wanted sex and nothing more. There were the trolls and the geeks and the men that made me feel superficial and mean for not ever giving them a chance despite the fact they seemed to be good people underneath a less than desirable exterior.
Finally there was that elusive 1% of attractive, but not so attractive that they were guaranteed to be players. The smart, cute, totally dateable man who (statistically speaking) had a line of women waiting to hang out. I was an underdog in so many ways but as I continued my adventures in swiping I reminded myself that Leon was right.
I needed to value myself more or no one else would.
With that in mind, I found myself walking to the full length mirror in the guest room, momentarily leaving my phone behind as I evaluated the product I was currently hawking online.
She was average female height at around 5’4” and 145 lbs. She had dark hair, dark eyes, full lips, and a nice smile. Her skin was looking a little ruddy at the moment with dark circles under her eyes and thanks to her laziness when it came to cosmetics meant that whenever she was sleep deprived she never attempted to hide the fact she looked less than ideal.
I thought about the Naomi I wanted to be, and how when I looked good I felt better about myself. I didn’t wear makeup just because I was a tomboy - really, I never wore makeup because I was too self-conscious to learn. I pretended that I was above it all, but in actuality I just perpetually ran behind and between not having time and not having any idea what I was doing started hanging my hat on the fact that I am “all natural”.
I decided that thanks to Leon’s verbal push I was going to be Naomi 2.0 - a better version of the self that had already made great strides to becoming better in the months since her fall down the rabbit hole. Beyond just introducing me to men, my time in otomeville had reminded me about all the things I liked about myself and now it was time to work on those things I still struggled with.
The next day, my coworkers were sad to learn that our salad runs with Hiroshi and Jin had come to an end. I came up with a story that they’d gone undercover and as a result even I didn’t know where they were.
As a result, I spent that lunch hour trying to familiarize myself with some basic products that I hoped could help give my appearance a bit more polish and my fragile ego a bit of a boost. The lady at Sephora informed me as she applied some powder with a brush that “I made hilarious faces” and as self-conscious as I was by the end of my time there I walked out with a good set of makeup brushes, powder, blush, bronzer, eyeliner, an eye kit for special occasions, an eyelash curler, and some mascara.
I’d gone back and forth on the lipstick, ultimately deciding that I’d be too self conscious in a bright color and would opt for my usual chapstick gloss.
No one said anything about my new look back at the office, and the day flew by as it usually did now that I was back in the rhythm of my usual life. At the moment, I’d spent the last few months working on a few different accounts ranging from athleisure (Adidas) to skincare (dove). After returning from otomeville and my quick stint at Addison & Rhodes, I’d requested a change of clientele from my boss and was happy that she accommodated my request.
My life at work was far more enjoyable these days, and it was nice to once again feel creative and inspired at my day job. The hours flew by and before I knew it 6 pm hit and I made a slight detour on my way back to Meg’s apartment.
In addition to the makeup, I decided to purchase a few “date night outfits” that were less stuffy than my “biz-cas” (business casual) work attire and very casual t-shirt and jeans. I’ll admit that even though I’d turned my nose up in the past at women who poured a lot of energy into their appearance, I was eating crow at the moment.
I looked nice - better than I had in a long time and as a result I could feel my confidence growing to the point that wooing 5 handsome men over the course of 3 months no longer seemed impossible.
With my high end shopping sprees complete (though not even comparable to the shopping I’d once done during my time as the bachelorette) I was found myself riding high on a mix of newfound confidence and positivity. I swiped my way from the shops near my office in TriBeCa/Soho to Meg’s apartment in the west village yet there was no sign of any of the otome men.
The tinder gold icon let me know that 99+ men had already swiped right (aka “yes”) on me and realizing that it might make sense to expedite this process through additional capital I took the leap and discovered that I already had 900 suitors at the ready. Feeling quite good about the number of men lined up to date me, I scrolled through the faces hoping to see someone familiar and just as I was close to the bottom who should I see but a very familiar cinnamon roll.
Wearing a leather jacket, holding his helmet in one hand, Hiroshi’s first Tinder photo had him leaning against his parked motorcycle. I was so excited that I almost hastily swiped right and instantly messaged him, but thinking about the king, Leon, and the fact that I did not know this version of Hiroshi I knew that I needed to play it smart.
I took screenshots of his page, hoping that there would be a clue seeing as how if I managed to blow this shot with him somehow I’d need a backup plan. From the images I gathered (paired with the miles away) I deduced that he was somewhere in Queens, had joined a local bike club there, and frequented a certain bar (two of his photos were in the same pub and in his profile he noted that he loved an inexpensive dive).
Once I’d properly archived all the information I could get on Hiroshi, I swiped right and hoping to appeal to his inner bike nerd I wrote, “Hey! Cool motorcycle - how long have you been riding?”
I felt good about that opener until a few minutes later I saw his reply and my newfound confidence shattered.
“Hey sorry - u were an accidental swipe. Cool u like bikes tho. Always up 2 chat about that but ur not my type haha.”
The king wasn’t playing around this time and it was already obvious that a little makeup and some new clothes weren’t going to help me much with a game that was clearly rigged from the start.
The old Naomi would have gotten down on herself, but this new and improved 2.0 Naomi who believed in her product was ready for what was clearly going to be the biggest challenge of her life...

DC Rebirth In Review - The Young And The Violent
Here is the 4th part of my DC Rebirth In Review series, where i take a look back at the good and the bad of DC’s Rebirth initiative in the wake of the news that they are dropping the Rebirth banners in December. To read my previous posts just click these links:
Part 1 - The Superman Family
Part 2 - The Batman Family
Part 3 - The Justice League
In this part, i will be talking about The Young And The Violent. Basically a snappy way of categorising series such as Teen Titans and Suicide Squad. So let’s get to it!
Tumblr media
Titans - Coming off of the back of Titans Hunt and DC Universe Rebirth #1, Wally West the original Kid Flash and The Flash in his own right returns to the fold and finds his old friends Dick Grayson (Nightwing), Donna Troy (Wonder Girl), Garth (Tempest), Roy Harper (Arsenal) and Lilith Clay (Omen) to find out the mystery of Rebirth, who stole the missing time from the universe and who was responsible for Wally’s disappearance? Written by Aquaman’s Dan Abnett and art by former Flash penciller Brett Booth, Titans is one of the stronger titles in DC that honestly makes you wonder why they didn’t make it a bi-monthly title. Readers that love Wally West will be thrilled as much as the fans of the original Teen Titans as it feels like the group have been together much longer than we know they have been currently. While Booth offers consistent artwork, his frantic and detailed style of pencils might be a headache for some people but it doesn’t distract from a well made series. - 9/10
Teen Titans - Just like Supergirl, the Teen Titans comic book takes some lessons in synergy from the popular Justice League vs. Teen Titans animated movie that came out last year and sees Damian Wayne’s Robin team up with Starfire, Beast Boy and Raven, as well as adding new recruits in Wally West II AKA the new Kid Flash and later on Jackson Hyde, who will later become Aqualad. The comic is written by Green Arrow’s Ben Percy but unlike the fan-service laden G.A Rebirth he chooses to make his own way with the new Teen Titans by exploiting Damian’s inability to do things like a normal person. It works well too, he forces the recruits together and they end up bonding under the idea that while he can make them better heroes, he’s also a bit of a dweeb and is the target of their ire. The artwork by Jonboy Meyers and later Khoi Pham is well detailed and looks like something straight out of an animation feature. Whether you were a fan of the animated movie or love a more classic Titans comic, this will be the book you want to check out. The only thing that holds it back is the annoyance of crossovers, with 2 so far and another to come in December, and considering the series only has 13 issues to date, it stunts the story telling opportunities for the writer. - 7.5/10
Tumblr media
Blue Beetle - On the surface the premise of this book is solid, Ted Kord and Jaime Reyes, both Blue Beetle in their own right, working together for the first time. It doesn’t really work that well though as it feels like Giffen and Kolins want to tell stories about Justice League 3001 and Doctor Fate instead, which is fine but that’s not what i’m paying for. I would personally avoid buying this book, it has very little promise but might interest you if you like Ted. - 2/10
Deathstroke - If you aren’t reading this book already, you really should be. Christopher Priest is a comic book veteran and after 10 years away from the big 2 he came back to work on Deathstroke because the character wasn’t black and as an African-American he didn’t want to be pigeon-holed as a “black writer”. The narrative of Deathstroke is complex but full of intrigue and substance too, Priest clearly understands the nuances of such a complicated man and uses them well but the plot itself is devious and cunning, almost like you are reading a cross between a George RR Martin book and a great spy novel. The quality of Priest’s work on this series has earned him a promotion of sorts to being the new regular writer on Justice League, and if that isn’t an indicator of his talent then i don’t know what is. - 10/10
Tumblr media
Harley Quinn - With Rebirth being a tale of bringing back what people love about their favourite characters, it was difficult for DC to really do anything to Harley Quinn because the series is one of their best sellers and Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti have worked on it since the beginning, so changing the status quo didn’t seem necessary. The only problem with that in my opinion is that the series has stagnated and become rather stale. The supporting cast of Harley’s world is brought in closer than ever in order to battle the Mayor of New York City but it feels rather predictable as a story. A new creative team is taking over soon, with Frank Tieri (formerly of Invincible Iron Man and Wolverine) writing and Inaki Miranda (recently of Batgirl) doing art duties, so maybe a change will come sooner rather than later. The series needs it. - 5/10
Suicide Squad - Since the movie last Summer, this book has sold rather well for DC but it’s not exactly a deserving one. The problem isn’t Rob Williams the writer but the way DC has managed the series. When the creative team was first announced it was with the big news that DC co-publisher and legendary artist Jim Lee doing the artwork, but with his other duties at the company and with the twice monthly schedule he was unable to commit to the series fully. Instead of the average 20 pages per issue, Suicide Squad was left with only 12 from Jim Lee and the other 8 being from backup artists doing a backup story from Rob Williams. With this and the average crossover with the Justice League in January, this series has spluttered out of the gate. The more recent issues post Jim Lee have been better but with more crossovers to come it feels like Rob Williams can’t catch a break and tell the stories he wants. Publisher politics aside, the series takes notes from the movie by copying the Squad roster and returning Amanda Waller into the thicc woman she was before, and while the book is certainly more light and funny than the movie, the synergy for the best part works quite well. - 4/10
Tumblr media
The Hellblazer - After the excellent Constantine DC You series by Doyle, Tynion and Rossmo, The Hellblazer fails to keep the magic going with extremely flat story telling and questionable artwork. The book has so far taken 12 issues to tell the story about ancient magical beings called Djinn returning but not once do you feel that there is any relative danger to Constantine or that anything serious could happen. Also the story itself feels detached from what is going on in DC right now, others have mysteries and larger picture things going on and others have guest stars and cameos galore, but apart from one appearance by Shazam and another couple by Swamp Thing, you would be hard pressed to believe this takes place in the same universe as the other on-goings. Tim Seeley has stepped in for a guest arc on the series and has improved the quality, but the issues by Simon Oliver and Moritat should be avoided at all costs. - 2/10
Tumblr media
Conclusions
A few missteps aside, the remainder of Rebirth’s catalogue has been good for DC and even those missteps are getting course corrections in new creative teams. I do believe that more work needs doing however, a Young Justice series with Tim Drake, Conner Kent and Cassie Sandsmark needs to happen and more magical based books such as Zatanna or Shazam need to happen too.
Tumblr media
With the return of the Young Justice animated series as well as the upcoming Teen Titans TV series, we might get more of a focus on the teenage heroes of DC soon, and with the new Shazam movie going into production we shouldn’t be too surprised if the original Captain Marvel returns to the fold.
Thanks for reading!
Next Up: Crossovers, Events and Mini-Series.

PREFACE:
A week ago (last Saturday), after my Detroit Street Session ended, I went to meet with my friend, Mr. E.P., to be a guest as he photographed folks in Highland Park at an old stamping factory. Before I knew it, I was informally assisting his efforts at his request by moving things around during the shoot, which was my humble honor. The next morning (last Sunday), at 4 AM, I awoke with the worst pain I have ever felt in my life. My neck (on the right side) felt as secure as a spiderweb thread strung above and across an inferno (my head holder was in the hands of an angry throb). I cried, though I did not cry well (crying is essentially impossible for me nowadays), and I wept like this without any comfort in sight. Ibuprofen helped somewhat in the coming days, and I healed a good bit (though noticeably not fully). I took time off work to heal, and I now face the prospect of quitting my day job on account of this horrific turn in my wellbeing. There was melancholy in imagining how I would hang a camera strap around my neck all day to do as I have done before. Today was my test. Could I keep coming back to seek my passion through the pentaprism? I thanked the Lord that it was Winter still. I thought that the cold might “ice” my wound. I wrapped two scarves tightly around my neck like a neck brace, and I took 400 mg of ibuprofen when I arrived (I could have taken more; I should have taken more; I wanted to see if I could face the pain). I made it nine-hours despite the pain, and I hope my “top ten” shots from the day are not just a point of pride for myself; I hope I still have it in me to make things others might like too.

PATH TAKEN:
Greektown - Over the past several weeks, at this juncture, I would have changed into my Carhart bib. It was around 25° F outside with 10 MPH winds in the morning, but yet it did not quite feel cold-enough to justify the extra layer. It ended up reaching around 33° F in the afternoon with the same winds. It was a beautifully live-with-able, climate-wise, day in the city I do not love (but am learning, ever so sluggishly, to appreciate).
Campus Martius Park
The Esplanade on Woodward Avenue - I experimented with my Tokina SZ-X 60-300mm f/4-5.6 lens, using the zoom in video mode to trace the light up signs on one side of Woodward Avenue reflecting on the windows of the building on the other side of the avenue. I also spied a scene with a Detroit firetruck and police cruiser with glorious steam behind them coming up from the manholes. Attempting to satisfactorily-frame a video clip with a 300mm zoom lens forces me to disdain my $20 miniature tripod and wish for a nicer alternative. There is an overpriced camera store an hour from my home that I treat like the last branch I reach for as I fall down a cliff. I suppose I will have to visit that shop soon if I am going to be able to rely on my gear to do more of what I want it to do.
Spirit of Detroit Plaza
Hart Plaza - The other day, I fell asleep with my iPhone plugged into a charger. When I woke up the next morning, both cameras on the phone (as well as the LED light) were no longer functional. As a photographer, this was a left-handed sword stuck into the gut for me, and I yearned to be able to post on my Instagram the continuation of the shredding of the American flags in Hart Plaza. I may email mayor Mike Duggan (Detroit’s seventy-fifth mayor) and a local news organization about this tattered American standard debacle.
Campus Martius Park - Last Saturday, in Highland Park, I met two men that were in the “Art Deco Society” for Detroit. Being a lover of Art Deco myself, I asked them an obvious question: “What is the greatest building in all of Detroit?” They were torn between the Guardian Building (my #1) and the Fisher Building (my #2). I walk by the Guardian Building just about every week, because it is in the heart of Downtown Detroit. The Fisher Building is a number of miles away in what is known as City Center (beyond downtown and even midtown). I decided then to hunt for the Fisher.
Fox Theatre
The LCA (Little Caesars Arena)
MOCAD
The DIA (Detroit Institute of the Arts)
The Detroit Public Library - There was an older gentleman waiting near Woodward Avenue for the library to open up for the day. He and I chatted for a minute, and I shared with him my antipathy regarding the otherwise breathtaking Italian Renaissance-style building that housed the Detroit Public Library. There were names etched into the Vermont marble near the top of the building, visible from Woodward Avenue. They were, from left to right:  Aeschylus; Archimedes; Socrates; Plato; Cicero; Caesar; Aristotle; Epictetus. :—:— I was perplexed at the choices as well as the order in which the choices appeared. I do not know much about half of the named men. I do know that Socrates taught Plato, who taught Aristotle, who taught Alexander the Great. I was curious why Cicero and Caesar appeared between Plato and Aristotle. I was also curious why Alexander the Great was omitted from the listing. Certainly, Cicero was one of the greatest minds of the last twenty centuries. It is because of Cicero that I adore Latin (well, Augustine’s adoration of Cicero’s Latin writing is what made me start teaching myself Latin [it is said that to read Cicero in Latin is the closest one can get to hearing music through language]). The ultimate irony is that above the front door to the Detroit Public Library, these words are inscribed:  “Knowledge is Power” :—:— I laughed with the man I met outside the library regarding what I thought was a silly disparity. How much did that building cost to erect only to have such a blunder (in my layman’s opinion)? I hope to go inside the library and seek the answer to this one day soon (I fully expect [or at least hope] to hear a sensible explanation to correct my unsatisfactory opinion of the selections and ordering of the names on the front of the library).
The Department of Mortuary Science (for Wayne State University) - It did not smell like anything outside of this building, but then again, it was a 24° F morning! Hahaha. This is as close to the Fisher as I could get. It was then 10 AM, and I had an 11 AM appointment to make with my pal, Roy. I took a photo of the yet-distant Fisher Building with my 300mm lens before releasing it from my sights. I will catch the Fisher another day!
University of Michigan Detroit Center
Mack Avenue
Milano Bakery - Arriving fifteen-minutes early, my security guard pal that looks after the bakery commiserated with me. I told him of my insane week that included the neck injury (much more craziness than what I recounted in this write-up happened, as happens sometimes). He had similar and crazier tales to trade with mine, and he left me with much encouragement. I always feel imbued with apotheosis (pretty good word) by such outright kindness; I dare say such treatment makes me a merry man (and to that, I say, “Let it be!”). Truth be told, Roy did not show much of a tan at all for having spent the previous two-weeks in Florida. He took his truck-mounted camper and Harley to a campsite in the panhandle part of the state. He met with a realtor and scoped a $150K fixer-upper in a $250K “working-class” neighborhood six-miles from the ocean. The area in which he hopes to soon reside is in the middle of several nature preserves and is largely devoid of tourists—for now (it is slowly being converted into a course of tourist traps). He plans to list his Michigan home in April and be gone not long after. I will miss him, and I told him as much a few times. He reverberated in kind in each instant.
Bert’s Market Place Jazz - I hopped in Roy’s red Mercedes, and we parked at Bert’s (I think of Bert, the owner, as the black Willy Wonka of Detroit [he is a man of wonder and universal kindness]). Peckish but picky, the two of us were; we skipped Bert’s and headed to get tea leaves at Rocky’s instead.
Rocky’s Nuts
Dearborn Fresh Supermarket - Roy took me to a favorite supermarket of his in Dearborn after complaining Rocky’s sold their loose leaf black tea for $20 a pound. It was $6 a pound at this place.
Urban Bean Co. - Roy and I had our regular beverages (he had an espresso [double shot]). I had an overpriced ginger drink.
Avalon Cafe and Bakery - I ran into a group of Cameroonian (central-African) vacationers here that were trying to locate B-Dubs. I volunteered to be their temporary tour guide to help them find the Victorian-Era (ca. 1840’s-1870’s) building that housed the largest Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant in America.
Buffalo Wild Wings - I photographed the vacationers here before heading back toward my car with the things I bought at Rocky’s. They had spent the day tracing black history through the city of Detroit. I hope their day continued with as much charm and glee as had been described to me by their chaperone.
Greektown - I had loose leaf teas from Rocky’s in a grocery bag clipped to my camera bag that I wanted to drop off at my car before making one last pass through the city. On my path back, a homeless man put a pair of brand new (still in its packaging) winter gloves in my face, offering to sell me them (I was wearing gloves at the time myself). I was disgusted. Someone likely had given those new gloves to him to keep him warm, and he preferred, rather, to make quick cash (possibly for his next score) off them. I had not seen any homeless folks yet in the day. Earlier in the week, to redirect my pain into a noble cause, I bought ten pairs of size 9-12 men’s long black socks from the dollar store that I filled with gospel tracts. “This man would have sold the socks,” I reasoned, and I walked away in sadness and bitterness having not given him anything but a brief scolding for crying wolf, as it were.
Donald “Sunn” Anderson’s art stand - For the first time in 2019, I saw my good friend, Mr. Anderson, with his art stand set up in Greektown. He told me about his brick and mortar studio space / store front and said I should check it out (it was nearby).
Monroe Street - I saw a man walking a bike down the sidewalk, which to me says “bad day” or “flat tire.” He looked familiar—like a homeless man I met last summer on a bridge in Eastern Market (also walking a [different] bike then). I asked him if his bike had a flat. He said no and added that he found the bike left under a bridge for three days and decided to take it as his own. I told him it was not his and that he should return it immediately. He said that a “known drug dealer” he knew claimed it, though the man refused to acquiesce it, since the dealer was mean. I figured the bike was stolen and that the “known” dealer was his dealer. I recalled how this homeless man told me last summer how he had just been released from a long prison sentence for a crime committed in his youth. The world had entered the Digital Age while he was locked up, and, by Providence, he had connected with a homeless service, called “Southpoint,” that provided training in computers, which resulted in his working for Dan Gilbert’s loan company. I hinted at our previous conversation from this past summer. The man claimed no knowledge of “Southpoint” and said he was never given such a job, though he admitted he was the man from last summer. He lied to me before as well as now! Feeling pity for the man, I gave him a pair of the socks I had on me. He snatched them from my hand and forcefully stuffed them into one of his front coat pockets. We parted ways, and my mind split under the weight of my naivety. I have told innumerable homeless folks since that summer meeting about this “Southpoint” resource that was nothing but a druggy’s deception.
Campus Martius Park - A faithful street preacher, named Reuben, was with his little boy plying his professed faith to the people passing his portable P.A. system. I walked up to him and told him I had great pictures of him if he would just send me a message. I handed him one of my business cards, and he smiled and apologized for not getting in touch before. I wanted to capture the man on camera before I left, so I started super close with my Nikkor 24mm f/2.8 lens and finished with my Tokina SZ-X 60-300mm f/4-5.6 lens (as zoomed in as I could muster). :—:— In my passage out I ran into a third “homeless” man with freshly-laundered folded blankets and a large smart phone and plenty of food atop a state-of-the-art walker. Judging by the quality and condition of the items he lugged, he seemed to have a home. Determined not to be fooled again, I rejected his pleas for monetary help and walked on by (albeit with a heavy heart at my coldness toward him).
Capitol Park
David Klein Gallery - I asked the kind folks at the gallery about the latest MetroTimes cover picture. It looked just like the Low Rider style of a recent showing at the gallery. They said they were not in cahoots with the magazine and lamented that fact, since it could have been excellent publicity for their recent Low Rider-themed gallery showing.
Campus Martius Park - I again photographed the street preacher and his young son. I wanted to get a shot of the two near one another with the son imitating his father. The shot in my “top ten” is as close to that goal as I could attain in the time I spent shooting there. I caved and gave the (”third”) homeless man a pair of socks, though when I tossed them at his hand, they fell short and hit the sidewalk, making him pick them up. This was an absolute accident, and I again felt bad (I am all too apologetic; am I becoming Canadian? The Windsor Hum must have buzzed my brains bonkers!).
The Hudson Site
The YMCA - Photographer, though I am, I do not look at everyone around me always. As I was on the lookout for Mr. Anderson’s brick-and-mortar studio space/storefront, a fourth homeless man passing against me in the sidewalk exclaimed at me, “Eastern MarkeT” (emphasizing the final letter in the word “market”). I looked up, startled, and I asked if he worked at Eastern Market too. He glared at me with the wildest eyes a mentally-drained man could manage, and I looked him up and down. He had on a coat that unzipped into a blanket that seems to be the universal winter uniform of Detroit’s homeless. Preoccupied with my goal of finding Mr. Anderson’s spot, I walked away without giving him another word.
Donald “Sunn” Anderson’s brick-and-mortar studio/storefront - I was amazed by Mr. Anderson’s storefront. His window art skills are fantastic.
Greektown - I saw the “fourth” homeless man (from just before) ahead of my planned path back to my car, so I ran up to meet his pace on the sidewalk and asked him what his outburst from before was about. He said I had told him there was work to be found in Eastern Market and that he had sought a job there to no avail. I apologized for his wasted efforts and told him he had done a great thing to get on with finding work for himself. I gave him a pair of socks, and he pocketed them with grace in his front coat pocket. I asked him where he was staying. He said he lived under a certain bridge. Our conversation continued through different topics. He said he had girl problems. Trying to peer-ify him, I joked back (referencing the famous Jay-Z song), “I feel bad for you, son!” The joke was lost on him; he blankly looked forward and kept walking. At right about that time, I reached Mr. Anderson’s stand and broke off to chat with him instead.
Donald “Sunn” Anderson’s art stand - I told Mr. Anderson that every self-respecting business in Detroit needs “Sunn” to shine upon its windows. He laughed. I was serious. There should be a campaign to get his art all over Detroit in this medium.
Greektown - Parting with Mr. Anderson, I caught up again with the “fourth” homeless man. I brought up his girl problems and asked what happened. He replied that a lady he had gotten with “bogeyed” him. Unfamiliar with what this meant, I asked for clarification. He loudly shouted some gibberish at me, at which point I locked eyes with a beat cop that happened at that moment in our walk to be to our right. I gave the policeman a bug-eyed look of pitying confusion about the homeless man’s outburst and walked onward. When out of earshot of the policeman, I told the homeless man that such an explosive response to a level-headed question was not socially proper and added that we were done for the time with our conversation.

WHAT WENT ON ON THIS DAY OUT IN DETROIT?
I sought to find if I could shoot street photography despite my pain from an injury incurred exactly a week ago. I think I succeeded, though my mobility was limited. :—:— The torn American flags in Hart Plaza were still (and further) torn. Unable to post about them online at the time, I think I should email the mayor and a news organization about this embarrassment. :—:— I fell into four odd interactions with some of the homeless in Detroit today. I want to learn the best advice to pass onto them.

“Inside baseball” concepts talked about in this Detroit Street Photography Session  —
● Carhart Bib - I used to have to seek shelter from the winds and the cold more often when it got “bone-chilling” cold (~15° F) before I started wearing Carhart overalls on colder outings. This “bib” also lets you get low without dirtying your regular clothes underneath (as a tall fellow, I find extra goodness in lower angles).
●  Mini Tripod - Get one. Get a good one that stays put when you set it. Learn from my mistake, and buy yourself a steady, sturdy mini tripod. I swear by mine any other time. You will get too much camera shake if you try to steady (by hand) a drooping (cheap, like mine) tripod.
●  Art Deco - There are almost a dozen Art Deco buildings / structures in Detroit (The Guardian Building; The Fisher Building; The Penobscot Building; The Livingston Lighthouse; The Rackham Building; The David Scott Tower; The Federal Building; The Detroit Free Press Building; The Macabees Building; The Water Board Building). Art Deco as a style is marked by modernistic aesthetics made with luxurious materials and executed with precise and complex designs. The 1920′s may well be my favorite decade of all time, and so, I am head over heels that Detroit has so many glorious Art Deco remnants yet extant. For any photographer, I would assert, such pretty pieces make for great pictures. :—:— Wherever you find yourself shooting shots, know what is around you and why it is there and why it is important (if at all). To borrow a phrase found atop a not-Art Deco building in Detroit: “Knowledge is Power!”
● Digital Age - We are in the Digital Age (a name for the present era that our offspring may change in a lifetime [or in eight]). To be in the present means you have the past to play off of. The sixteenth-century super-genius, Martin Luther, thought he was beyond spoiled to have press-printed books to use for study (this was a vast improvement in convenience over enormously-expensive and rare hand-copied scrolls and books). We have computers (and who knows what else in coming years?). A great photographer that sells his (and his father’s) prints in Eastern Market gave me great advice when I asked for his best wisdom for pursuing photography. He asked me, “is that a digital camera you are using?” I answered affirmatively. He said, “you basically have unlimited shots, given the memory card’s capacity over and above any film camera roll, so shoot everything you want to shoot, and take multiple shots each time.” We are in the Digital Age. Be retroactive if you like, but know that there are liminal conveniences that may teach you as much or more than dated, sometimes less-convenient approaches.

Comic Book Review: Harley Quinn #22, "The Family Circles, Pt.1"
By: Jerry Montgomery June 24, 2017
Harley Quinn #22 “The Family Circles, Pt.1”
Written by: Jimmy Palmiotti & Amanda Conner Artist: John Timms
A new story arc begins in issue #22 for Harley when new guests arrive unexpectedly early, putting her in less than embarrassing position! That’s right! Mom and Dad make a surprise early visit to Harley in “The Family Circles, Pt.1”! You’re about to find out a lot more about Harley Quinn than you’ve ever known when her parents come to town to see how their little girl is getting along! Its not all the joys of a family reunion though as the backlash of the previous storyline, “Red Meat” is felt on high at police headquarters and an old enemy finally makes contact with Harley.
Since way before this current issue, Harley has been both anticipating and dreading the arrival of her parents since they announced their intentions of coming to visit. Getting caught off guard by their early arrival, Harley is forced to endure a series of embarrassing introductions as Mom and Dad meet her friends who live in the building. Poison Ivy, Red Tool, Big Tony, Goat Boy and the rest of the gang get a real kick out of messing with Harley with gleeful mischief much to the chagrin of Harley! Once the introductions are over, it’s time for Harley’s parents to get the big tour of the city and where she has her psychiatric practice at the retirement home. There’s a lot of catching up about home and more to come presumably as Mom and Dad head back to their hotel to get ready for dinner later on. Harley too goes back to her apartment to get ready but trouble rears its ugly head as an old, once obsessed enemy shows up at a most inopportune time for her with two bound and ball-gagged captives in tow. It seems like Harley can’t get any downtime from her enemies but she soon learns this enemy wants something more than just a fight.
Meanwhile, it appears the previous “Red Meat” story just won’t go away. It seems the mayor’s reach extends beyond city hall as Police Chief Spoonsdale feels his influence with the help of the city’s sexy attorney, Jean Raymond. Those arrested in connection with the cannibal killings of the city’s homeless have been turned over to other authorities and the Chief warned off any further investigation. It doesn’t seem Spoonsdale will be scared off too easily and may get himself more embroiled in the conspiracy set forth from the mayor and city hall.
In the secondary story, “Harley Loves Joker, Pt. 6”, this Batman: The Animated Series inspired tale continues with Harley hanging out with the Alice in Wonderland themed Wonderland Gang’s March Hare, Carpenter and Tweedle Dum…or is it Dee? Anyway, it’s hideout, death-trap makeover time as Harley wants to surprise her Puddin’ with some fancy new digs with the help of the Carpenter. The Joker’s infiltration of the Gotham City Police Department begins to pay off as he discovers who’s been robbing from him. A new girl’s in town…the Grison! (It’s a South American weasel.)
The Verdict: Issue #22 is an entertaining and funny read as it details what most of us have come to dread…a visit from Mom and Dad. We get to learn more about Harley’s family, especially her siblings and possibly the source of Harley’s free-spirit…her Mom and Dad! There’s plenty of sexiness, sexual innuendo and cat fighting in nothing but bath towels! There’s even a bit of surprising kinkiness thrown in for good measure! Fans of “Fifty Shades”, unite! Everything you’ve come to love from the Harley Quinn comic is here and more. The writing is as zany and madcap as ever and the artwork is great as well though, I question some of Timm’s use of his stark blacks at times that come across as sideburns, helmets and oilslicks. Overall, this a perfect time to jump onto this title if you haven’t already been reading it.

All Things Begin to Appear: Chapter 10
What happens when Scully starts having visions while her and Mulder are hunting a serial killer?
season 5 case file | 30k words | tw: some depictions of violence
Read the beginning of the story
“After all, the true seeing is within.”    - George Eliot
Scully paced around the back of the stage, the paper in her hands slightly trembling. She didn't usually mind speaking in front of people - she had even testified in front of Congress for chrissakes - but today she felt uncharacteristically nervous. Scully didn't know if it was the fact that there was a big auditorium filled with people or the fact that there were several media outlets that were going to film and record her or the fact that she was trying to draw out a dangerous serial killer. Either way, the combination of the three was making her palms sweat and her heart race. The press conference was also taking place at a local high school and that distinct "school" smell was giving her flashbacks of her teenage self and how that person did not like speaking in front of class so much.
Luckily before Scully could send herself into a full blown panic attack, Mulder approached her, having to skirt around some technicians on ladders fixing the lights. All the other law enforcement officers present for the press conference, including Agent Callahan, the chief of police and a few detectives, were in the green room, drinking coffee, probably not nervous at all because all they had to do was stand there for the cameras. At least that was what Scully assumed.
"Are you ready?" Mulder asked, once he finally navigated successfully to her side. He must have noticed her stricken expression because his face softened and he pushed a lock of hair behind her ear and then smoothed a hand down her right arm.
She could only nod, afraid to open her mouth.
"You're going to do a great job," he said earnestly but then changed to a more serious tone to say, "But I really don't like that you're doing this. If you change your mind, I can still get up there and make the report, Scully."
"No," she replied, suddenly a little bit more confident. "It makes so much more sense for me to be the bait. Plus, we need to keep you out of harm's way."
He stared at her and she stared right back, probably a little too intensely. Mulder let out a sigh and looked away.
"Alright," he conceded, most likely only because he knew he wasn't going to win this argument. "You know what to say?"
"Yes, Mulder," she droned, shaking the paper in front of her face. The two of them had went over Mulder's notes for hours, trying to make sure Scully understood everything about the case, or at least enough to be able to answer questions from the curious media. Tonight was the night that they were going to reveal their suspect. Normally this wasn't how investigations were conducted (outing the suspect before he has been arrested), but based on his profile Mulder was certain that this type of exposure would embolden Stanton instead of sending him running for the hills.
At that point the other officers and agents who were hanging out in a classroom-turned-green room started filing in behind the curtain where the partners were standing, ready to take their place on the stage. Scully checked her watch; only about five minutes until the eight o'clock start time. Mulder squeezed her shoulder quickly and then left to take his seat in the front row of the audience. Scully and Agent Callahan both agreed that he should stay out of view of the cameras and Mulder only argued a little bit against that request. Funnily, Agent Callahan strolled over, not looking anxious at all, just like Scully suspected.
"How ya feeling?" he asked, sounding sympathetic to her plight. He had been very reluctant to let any of his agents or the local officers participate in this kind of trap but went along with it after the Cleveland police chief liked the idea. The city residents were getting restless without any break in the case which is why they were going through with his potentially dangerous mission.
"I'm okay," she said, taking a deep breath. She needed to be relaxed on stage so that Stanton didn't get suspicious. This is just like any other press conference, she thought to herself.
"Hey, don't sweat it. This," he gestured around, "is a piece of cake. The hard part comes later. You know, looking for Stanton. But we're going to mic you so you'll always been in contact with the team that's tailing you."
He paused, and then continued. "That location you scouted? Are you sure that's where he'll show up?"
Scully hesitated. It was tough working with another FBI agent and to figure out how much to disclose. Most of the time her and Mulder worked alone and sometimes with the local police who usually deferred to their authority, which was helpful because they encountered so much unbelievable phenomena that it would be near impossible to have someone else in the loop with them. When Scully found the alleyway that her vision occurred, Mulder just relayed to Stanton that it was based off his profile and it was in the vicinity of the murders. The last part was true, at least.
"Well, it is just a hunch," she hedged. "But Mulder is very good at figuring out this kind of thing. You know that he caught Monty Props right?" she hoped that bringing up the old case (Mulder's crowning achievement, at least according to the FBI) would alleviate some of Callahan's concerns and prevent him from analyzing things too much.
It seemed to have worked because Callahan smiled and responded with, "Yes of course, of course. Well, if you're sure then we'll go along with your plan."
The lights in the backstage area dimmed and everyone quieted down so Agent Callahan smiled again and stepped away. The police chief was going to speak first and announce the suspect. Then Scully was going to describe their profile, call Cleveland to action and answer questions from reporters.
The curtains opened to reveal the stage to the crowded auditorium. The flash of cameras made Scully blink a few times. She didn't understand how celebrities could tolerate all those flashing lights. The set-up was simple: a lectern in the middle with the American and Ohio state flags book-ending the stage. The police chief, Robert Harley, stood behind it with Scully at his right hand. Agent Callahan was to his left and the other detectives who were assigned to the case stood around them. The mayor of Cleveland was also in attendance and he was going to speak afterwards.
Just act natural, Scully thought to herself, trying to arrange her features into a neutral expression for the cameras. If only it were that easy. She caught Mulder’s eye in the audience and he smiled. Here we go…
After the press conference, Scully felt an immense sense of relief, even though, as Callahan had mentioned, the hard part hadn't even happened yet. As far as she could tell, she did a good job. She answered the reporters' questions (luckily none of them were too hard) and didn't even have to look too much at the notes in front of her. The media and the public in the audience seemed appreciative of the effort put into the case so far and no angry townsfolk with pitchforks had disrupted the event.
She didn't get a chance to talk to Mulder afterwards, which was technically their plan but Scully was going to renege on that part. She wanted some type of reassurance from him before putting herself up as bait for Stanton. But luckily (or unluckily) Mulder ignored her as per their agreement. The cameras might still be rolling or Stanton could even be in attendance, which is why they agreed to avoid each other in the first place. He did give her a subtle wink on his way out, though, but Scully figured she would talk to him tonight afterwards. Hopefully it would be at the station once Stanton was captured.
So after she shook hands with the mayor and gave a short interview to a local radio station, Scully left for the police precinct. It was there, under Agent Callahan's scrutiny, that she was mic’ed and given a Kevlar vest to wear under her jacket. Luckily it was cold out or Scully would be sweating with the lead vest and a winter coat to hide it. Her visit was quick (in case Stanton was observing) and she left the station with a file folder, so it looked like she had a reason for the trip.
Mulder had relinquished the rights to the rental car for the night, so that was how Scully was going to get to the location. She turned on the car and had to blast the hot air because of the cold, the heat from her recent drive completely dissipated. She glanced in the rear view mirror, where she could see a nondescript white van idling. She knew it was her tail, the officers who were listening to her on the mic and that she could hear their chatter in her ear. They were the ones who would apprehend Stanton if he appeared.
She drove around the city a little. She wanted to make it seem like she naturally stumbled upon the location. She stopped at the drug store and picked up some more hairspray. She didn't actually need it yet but she would eventually so she didn't charge it to the FBI expense credit card. Then she moved on to the gas station. It was parallel to the alley that the vision occurred in. She put the nozzle in her gas tank and tried to act like she was bored, like it was no big deal for a woman to wander around the alley next to the station. She stood around, ostensibly reading a notice about NO PARKING but really listening intently and using her peripheral vision to scope out any guests. Nothing. She went back to her car, got in and decided to wait. Come and get me asshole.
Scully waited two hours. That's when she started to get antsy. She could hear the two other agents through her earpiece. They at least were having fun - listening to the recap of a basketball game. After three hours, Scully decided to give up. She clearly had not drawn the killer out.
She decided to call Callahan and see if she could get the okay to leave. But when he picked up the phone, he started talking before Scully even opened her mouth.
"Have you talked to Agent Mulder recently?" he demanded.
Scully was caught off guard. "No - no," she stammered. "Why would I? I wasn't expecting to."
"Well I've been calling him for the past two hours and then I went to your hotel and he's not there."
Scully didn't understand why he was so worked up. "Agent Callahan, I have something to tell you about my partner. He's not always the most responsible. His phone is probably dead and he most likely went out for a run."
"Does he usually leave the hotel door open too and the key card on the floor?"
Scully was surprised. "What? No! Okay, I'm leaving right now and should be there shortly." She ended the call and then put the car into drive. Luckily the hotel wasn't too far away and there would be no traffic since it was so late.
Scully didn't know what to think about that interaction. On the one hand, the situation Callahan just described was normal Mulder behavior (except maybe the door and missing key). But on the other hand, this case was so wacky that there could be something more sinister at play. Not for the first time this case, Scully cursed the visions she was having. Why couldn't she have seen this coming? she thought. Though, she DID see this coming. Scully had the feeling that she had been terribly, terribly wrong but she wasn't quite sure why.
Callahan was pacing around the parking lot when Scully pulled up.
"What are you doing?" she called to him after she turned the key out of the ignition and locked the door.
"I'm waiting for the manager to pull the outside security footage. Right now I'm looking for clues," he stated.
"What do you expect to find?" she asked. Scully still wasn't sure Mulder was actually in trouble but seeing Callahan so agitated was making her nervous.
"I don't know, I just have a bad feeling about all of this. We set that trap for Stanton but what if he was one step ahead of us the whole time. What if he knew we were so focused on you that Agent Mulder would be vulnerable?"
"And how would he know that?" she asked coldly. This was getting into Scully's psychic vision territory she was starting to feel defensive for no good reason.
"No idea," Callahan said, pausing to look at his phone screen. "That's the manager calling. Let's go in."
Scully was glad to be out of the cold when they entered the lobby and Callahan showed her to the security room. There were a lot of television screens with feeds to all areas of the hotel. The manager was standing in the back while one of the security guards started the tape for them. There wasn't a camera in their hallway but rather one right by the elevator. At 9:22 Mulder gets off the elevator. A bellhop pushing a laundry cart follows him out. Scully squinted her eyes. The view was so grainy but she could swear he looked familiar. At 9:24 the bellhop returns to the elevator and goes down with the laundry cart again. She glanced at Callahan who was grimacing. She turned back to the monitor. They were watching the bellhop wait for the elevator to return. There was no sound, but he doubled over coughing, pulling a handkerchief from his pocket. The screen was black and white but after he wiped his mouth, the handkerchief was covered in a dark substance.
Scully's heart stopped.
"That's him," she said, her voice low.
