FAVORITE THING ABOUT THEM: He’s not a conventional hero. He doesn’t look like a typical hero (instead of being a traditionally attractive tall muscular dude with a six-pack, he’s a short guy who’s got a lil chub on his belly), and he doesn’t have a profession a typical hero might have (not a knight or anything noble...but a plumber instead). And he doesn’t even need a “secret identity”. He’s just an ordinary working-class guy who’s gotten wrapped up in some extremely extraordinary circumstances!

LEAST FAVORITE THING ABOUT THEM: Is Mario ever allowed to openly be vulnerable sometimes? Because I’ve never seen that very often and I think as a silent protagonist, that seems a bit unhealthy. #LetMarioCry2k19

FAVORITE LINE: “Mamma mia!” It’s such a classic Mario thing to say; I’m a sucker for whenever he says anything in his native language because it’s a such a crucial part of his identity (and mine too lol. #GrowingUpItalian). Secondly, “mamma mia” lets us know that, in some ways, he’s just like we are, and he’s no stranger to sticky situations.

RANDOM HEADCANON: Mario’s biggest hero is his brother, without question. He even considers Luigi to be braver than him on multiple occasions. Anyone who talks shit about his brother is someone he straight up Does Not Trust.

UNPOPULAR OPINION: I don’t like Mario as much as I like Luigi.......sorry! Luigi’s just a little bit more relatable on a day-to-day basis!

SONG I ASSOCIATE WITH THEM: “High Hopes” by Panic! At the Disco. With a song about a guy forging his own path into greatness, how it could not apply to Mario? The trumpet fanfare and the marching snares are bold and dramatic, and the strings accompanying them also give me some Beethoven’s “Eroica” Symphony energy, which is also about a hero doing heroic stuff. It’s perfect for a hero like Mario!

FAVORITE PICTURE OF THEM: Literally any render of Mario for “Super Mario Odyssey!” They’re so high-quality it makes me cry, especially the detail in his hair! (I know it’s bordering on Uncanny Valley but OOF. It’s beautiful.)
