Teach In Skill Share Groups

For your reference (and mine) here are the teach-in skill share groups that we assigned last week. I will be meeting with each group this week during class time to finalize topics and schedules.

The teach-in skill share sessions start next month. Here are the dates:

Session 1: March 14th / Session 2: March 19th / Session 3: March 21st / Session 4: April 9th

In-class Exercise:  Tracing the City

In this assignment, we were expected to analyze the photo which is given by our instructor and discuss rules of order, grammar&syntax&semantics, Gestalt principles, and form-relations in groups of 10-15 people. Also, we had to look for repetitions, regulating lines, power lines, grouping, etc, and must have used point, lines, and plane by annotating. Based on these, we discussed among ourselves and did our assignment as in the photo above.At the end of this assignment, we have begun to understand what kinds of approaches can be in urban planning.

Group work

Why is it that teachers feel the need to put children into groups with people they know they won’t work well with and tell them to learn how to solve their problems as a team..? “Things will get in your way but you have to learn to move around those things” OH so do all the work by myself with the stress of having a mindset that it is suppose to be equally separated and find that parts aren’t being completed thus, thinking the main person doing work is overwhelmed due to thinking they have more work than they should. When we wouldn’t feel even half as bad if it were made to just one person each to start with. I understand we will be adults soon. I understand that times will be hard and not everything will go our way. But when I tell you something is wrong with my team, for the love of god don’ t tell me that I need it to learn the ways of team building. As a student with a teenage mind, I tend to overthink things and make a situation worse if I am overwhelmed. Feeling as if I am babying a group and spoon feeding them every answer just so THEY can pass, doesn’t help as a group. Just lets me know that I won’t be able to rely on anyone if I was to make a situation equal and lets my group members know “Oh hey, I can relax, she/he has it covered because they are smart.” this leading us all to failure and confusion.

Social Loafing & Respect

Social loafing is the term given to the phenomenon of people exerting less effort to achieve a goal when they work in a group, than when they work alone.

According to research, working in a group affects productivity negatively by up to 50% more than working individually!

We all know the feeling of picking up the slack for that guy (or girl), and in the end, social loafing does no one any favours, especially the loafer, who is usually a Mr Nigel No-Friends by the deadline.

Respect is key when working with others, and upholding academic integrity means showing respect towards fellow students and delegating tasks fairly in group situations. Keep that in mind when you’re hit with your next group project!
