propaganda:
They’re two space outcasts who managed to find the other and almost always have each-other backs when the rest of the galaxy is against them. They don’t get along all the time and can have their fights/falling outs, but they always manage to find a way back to one another and it clear they both care about eachother deeply, even if rocket in particular is way to angry and emotionally stunted to show it most of the time. Personal favourite moments with them include the 2015 Groot miniseries where Rocket, despite hating earth, helps Groot to go on a space road trip there, (and the moment in that same comic where they say they’d go across the galaxy and back for eachother 🥹) the two of them going on a virtual beach vacation together in the Groot and Rocket Raccon comics, and them straight up saying I love you to eachother in the gotg eidos game and the Telltale game
I do slightly prefer their platonic bromance as is, but no one can tell me there isn’t at least more than one universe where they’re a married couple.
Also I just think it would be super funny if there’s a version of the gotg where the main romantic couple is the weird comic relief talking Racoon and sentient tree monster rather than any ship involving the conventionally attractive humanoid heroes like starmora.

I adore Rocket and Groot’s relationship. They’re just two weird outcasted creatures of the Marvel universe who found each-other and had each others backs when the whole rest of the galaxy treated them like freaks. They don’t get along all the time and can have their (old married couple energy) arguments, but at the end of it all you can tell they care about one another, even if Rocket is to emotionally stunted for his own good to admit it out loud most of the time. They also have a ton of sweet moments together, from Rocket going through the trouble of traveling to earth, a planet he hates, just so Groot can be happy and (mild spoiler) reunite with an old friend of his in the 2015 Groot comic series, to them going on a beach vacation together in the Rocket Raccoon comics, to Rocket Having an I ♥️ Trees mug in Marvel’s Rocket & Groot Cartoon, to Groot and Rocket straight up saying “I love you” to eachother in the Guardians: Grounded comic, the Gotg Eidos game, and the Telltale game etc. (which now that I think about it, I think rocket has probably said “I Love You” to Groot in most gotg related media more times combined than he has to any of his canon female love interests… so do with that info waht you will…). I could go on, really. Tbh, I do slightly prefer and love Groot and Rocket’s close platonic friendship as is, but I would be lying if I didn’t believe there’s at least more than one universe in the Marvel multiverse where they’re married.

Rocket's Backstory
*deep breath* God help me
This is the most inconsistent Marvel backstory and I, the top expert on Halfworld, am here to clear it up.
I'm going to split the variants into the following catagories: 1985, 2014, modern comics, show, and mcu. (the show is simply called Guardians of the Galaxy and is on disney+ and i highly recommend).
I have compiled a spreadsheet to go over the main points
As you can see, it's a shit show.
(As i go over the stories as best I can, please note that i am not a comic buff i am a 15 yo with Asperger's and an obsession with Halfworld and if i get something wrong plz don't be mad at me just tell me and I'll fix it :3)
1985 Rocket Raccoon- Rocket is a genetically modified caretaker on Halfworld, a mental asylum used to hold the insane of the galaxy, known as loonies/shrinks (extremely offence things to call mentally ill ppl but it was the 80'ssss). They have a book called the Halfworld Bible, which holds the secrets of the planets and it's people. The planet is ruled by Mayhem Mechaniks and Dyvynicies Inc; rival toy companies owened by Judson Jakes and Lord Dyvyne respectively. Jakes killed Lylla's parents to steal the company and it's... horrifying robot clowns. Pyko steals the Halfworld Bible for it's instructions on how to escape the planet in a giant human-shaped ship. Jakes and Dyvyne find out about this plot and team up to crash a party and there's a big battle and Rocket, Lylla, Pyko, Wal, Blackjack, and possibly Pyko escape Halfworld on the ship, leaving it in shambles as the loonies are left to the own devices to rebuilt the planet with their newfound wisdom (Pyko manages to 'cure' them)
2014 Rocket Raccoon (my fav series :3)- This one doesn't have much in the way of backstory, all we know is what Captain Sale gives us in the last book. Throughout the series it is shown that Rocket has no memory of his creation and believes he is the last of his kind. Until he ends up on Captain Sale's ship. She gives he the key to the Book of Halfworld and he takes 4 hours to read it. He is shown to be disgusted and horrified at the contents, leaving it with Sale and going home. (Clowns and the toy factory etc are mentioned, implying it is a sequel to the 1985 version.
Modern Comics- This section is specifically about v5 GotG #8 as I don't recall any other comics going into much detail. Here, there are loonies and robots, but no clowns. They must have thought it was too silly. Rocket is a therapy animal turned sentient with cruel experimentation. This is the first version of Rocket's backstory to show him sustaining significant and lasting trauma from his past. Not to mention the debilitating physical effects of having a metal skeleton and countless other weird things he doesn't understand. After his transformation, he is shown with the 1985 gang and other past team ups in a montage. It seems there is also an attempt at continuity here but it misses the mark a bit.
GotG Show 2015- This is by far the worst adaptation in my opinion, as it completely overhauls the story. So note that I have bias here. Here, Rocket is a simple Earth raccoon that has been transformed with the purpose of being a living weapon. His purpose was more 'artificial genius' than 'genetic marvel'. Immediately after being let into a more open enclosure, he meets Groot and effortlessly destroys the robots and steals a ravanger ship. After freeing all the creatures, of course.
(i am unable to provide images for this section as disney is a pussy ass company and won't let me screenshot but just imagine it sucking)
MCU- Anyone reading this has already seen the movies but I'll go over it anyway. The High Evolutionary is a man trying to recreate a sentient Earth-like planet by modifying creatures. Rocket is one of these poor souls. He lives his early years in a cage with Floor, Lylla, and Teefs. Rocket manages to open the cage one day, only to have his friends shot in front of him by the High Evolutionary. He then escapes. He meets Groot later in a well, not shown but confirmed by James Gunn.
Wow this took long to write. Time for the conclusion. Here i will 'average out' all the stories and throw in my personal theories.
My version- Halfworld is an insane asylum built by the Kree where they experiment on mentally ill people to try to cure them(we used to do this here on earth until the 60's). The 'toy factory' is a cover-up for this operation. The robot 'doctors' use clown faces to put the patients at ease. But what do psycho robot doctors do when the asylum is abandoned and not longer supplied with patients? They turn to the animal inhabitants on the planet. The Halfworld Bible/ Book of Halfworld is an engineering manual documenting the disgusting progress of making an innocent creature sentient. Pyko frees his people after decades of slavery in a grand rebellion and Lylla becomes the Priestess and guardian of the book like in 1985. Unfortunately, during the rebellion, 89P13 and Groot get stuck in an escape pod and sent away from the Keystone Quadrent, leading him to believe all of his people are dead or re-enslaved.
I think this version harnesses the soul and vibe of all the backstories while making it make more sense in the long run.
I had a lot of fun putting this together and I hope y'all appreciate it :D (Follow for more Halfworld content <3)

ken ˗ˋˏ♡ˎˊ˗
let me love your OCs masterlist
i had so much fun doodling this character??? thank you SO much @thismonthshyperfixation for letting me play with your rad-as-hell original character. they are so fucken fun
meet ken, who stumbles across a newly-rehomed Peter quill in a local earth music shop. ken & pete get to chatting about music recs & things go from there. ken is also a contractor & local woodworker, and pete eventually is like “hey you should meet my friend rocket who also builds shit, including a gun for blowing up moons and the weirdest fucken spaceship you’ve ever seen.” (this is not hard to believe as ken has presumably not seen a ton of spaceships, though i could be wrong about that.) anyway quill says “so you wanna go visit my buddy at his place? it’s in a floating skull in deep space if that’s cool” to which ken, of course, is like “fuck yeah i wanna meet your friend”
then pete and ken hop into whatever runabout Pete’s using these days (maybe the old benatar?) and head back to space on a road trip which i imagine to be much like groot’s adventures in the 2015 i am groot comic run. there’s a ton of bonding and then ken meets rocket who is ((i personally believe)) extremely and grouchily impressed by ken’s skills and very eager to see exactly how they can collaborate on making some very cool shit. then they bond too and everyone is very happy
i fucken LOVED drawing and painting ken. their tattoos were my favorite part (i used a lot of existing tattoos gif reference so they’re certainly not fully original compositions). but i also really loved their hair & eye colors, especially in combination with each other.
thank you again, @thismonthshyperfixation for the privilege of getting to doodle your awesome character in my style ♡♡♡ I appreciate you so much!

opinions on venom interacting with rocket raccoon or groot? im not super into GoG, but i know they've probably interacted at some point in time. any headcanons for them? :D
Hiya, friend! You'll be pleased to know that Venom (host: Flash Thompson) and Rocket have interacted! Now, at the risk of alienating my friends who hated this run, I'm going to still point out a few of my favorite moments, because I did like a handful of the times they interacted. It was fun. Bendis didn't deserve Flash.
They actually met in the 2014 Free Comic Book Day issue of Guardians of the Galaxy, which is kind of odd to put a major change in a team lineup in a FCBD book, but... at least it was accessible?
Beyond that... they teamed up for quite a while during Bendis' GotG run, from Guardians of the Galaxy (2013) #14-27, and then in the next volume (GotG 2015) #1-19. Now, don't go looking for Venom in every issue, because you won't find them. But I think they could bond over cool weapons and general bad-assery.
There was an interesting moment in GotG #19 when the symbiote actually bonded to Rocket, but it was brief, and largely so it could grab Drax later and pilot the ship to Klyntar.
Flash cares about his buddy. 🥺
They're also a little snarky with each other! It's fun though. They had a great team-up scene in GotG #27 that also is a neat showcase of Venom's new abilities.
Overall they have a fun dynamic. It's a lot of them being a little short with each other but they fight together really well!
There is just one thing that they don't agree on... and that's how much to respect Spider-Man. But, to be fair, most people don't have as much respect for Spidey as Flash does.
(GotG v5 #14)
And they got one final fight together against Thanos in GotG #19! As well as a last goodbye...
Now, all that said... It's been told to me many times that Bendis' Guardians run is... hm... how to say it... not very good. But! I would love to familiarize myself with some other runs and maybe build some better HCs off of those. Bendis didn't exactly utilize Flash or Venom in the most interesting way, and unfortunately that means they didn't really get any well-developed, meaningful relationships with their teammates. But I would say that maybe more than any of the other Guardians, Flash and the Symbiote did seem to get along with Rocket really well!
I really enjoyed this delightfully specific ask and it was fun going back through the issues. If there's anything I really love, it's talking about Flash and his dynamics with other characters... so this was a real treat to me! Thanks! 💖

If you had the chance to fix some comic storylines that you thought were bad or a waste of potential which ones would it be.
I'm taking this as an excuse to tell you how I would rewrite every GOTG run barring 2008 and 2020.
2013
I think this run would've been. so fucking cool. if original sin dropped the bombshell that the Peter Quill we've been following this whole time is the Peter Quill of the Cancerverse and 616 Pete is still trapped in the Cancerverse with Rich.
It'd do a lot to explain the wonky characterization-- and it'd give the Guardians themselves a clear-cut mission. the 2013 kind of meanders a lot with no clear goal, so it'd benefit from a straightforward "save x from y" type of mission.
Peter & Rocket's friendship would be a big focus here; I think if Pete was replaced, Rocket would be one of the first to pick up on it
Plus, Adam could show up <3
2015
Extrapolating the Wanted arc into something more- by this point in the GOTG comics, they've pissed off every major empire (Kree in Black Vortex, Shi'ar in TOJG, Spartax by Peter's existence, Badoon by Gamora's existence, etc) and it'd be fun if it was just... every galactic empire is gunning for their heads & they've got to keep up the whole guarding the galaxy through that.
I'd have Cammi come back in this, like if we've gotta have her with the Ravagers then fine, she's there to take them in 'cause she's pissed that they never found & she got stuck with Arcade.
It gives Drax some limelight & focuses on how he navigates being a father
Nebula as the main villain, having the Graces as arc long bad guys for the team to fight. Neb obviously has her 616 personality & is in this for the bounty - but Gamora can take it personally due to the drama with the Graces
All New All Different/2018
Magus as the main villain this seems so obvious to me
I'd keep the Infinity Wars stuff, just in a way that makes sense. Gamora is working with Magus to get her soul back because he's also got a part of him stuck in there
It's all a scheme by Magus & Goddess to escape Soul World; Goddess has shown to be able to brainwash Gamora before, so we can put that on that
I'd also not. downplay the Ultron side of things. Conquest was fucking traumatizing for this team
Gamora's past with the Phalanx would also work well with the Magus/Goddess thing; maybe she's got it in her head that if she gets her soul back, she'll have purpose again
Mantis would be there for the Ultron side of things
I would work Phyla's resurrection in there somehow. 616 Phyla, specifically, like I don't think anything fancy needs to be done at all, Thanos has been resurrected so many times it'd be simple to say Oblivion brought her back to combat Magus&Goddess
Can work the Groot stuff into the themes of Soul & Trauma like... Groot died in Conquest, he was lit on fire, and grew back as a little stump. So the Groots are killing worlds... but it's always worlds that Ultron was going to target & it's a fucked form of mercy
2019
In stories that focus primarily on Thanos & the Universal Church of Truth as the antagonists, I would simply not make it the Peter Quill show & instead let Gamora & Warlock take the lead
If Starmora has to happen, I'd have Peter's arc be more about trust & how to keep it, contrasting with Gamora's arc of learning to give second chances after people hurt her
I'd also. address how Adamora broke up, like delve into why, bring in Atleza in at least a mention, etc
2023
I'd keep Grootfall as some kind of corrupting force in the Manifold Territories but not as the reason they're there
Instead
I'd use the whole "the Manifold Territories are from beyond the known universe" and have Peter be the one insisting they go. Have him aware of the risk this could pose to teammates (maybe have it have something to do with damaged souls-- Gamora's & Drax's are healed after Infinity Wars, etc, but Groot is still vulnerable from the Gardener) but he does not care because if it's beyond the known universe, it's beyond the sun
He's trying desperately to get back to Morinus
Mantis has brainwashed the others into coming & it becomes an inverse of GOTG2008; instead of Peter doing all of this for altruistic reasons, it's because he wants to go home
Continuing to inverse 2008 - show how the GOTG have changed each other through their refusal to kill Groot. Peter shot Warlock; now, years later, he can't do that to Groot. Being a Guardian has changed him
Like show the positive & negative effects that the Guardians have had on everyone

I wonder when rocket first tried pizza?
Each canon is gonna be different, but my headcanon is he got to try it shortly after the War in Wakanda. He was on Earth for at least three weeks pending the snappening. I don't know anyone on Earth who goes three weeks with no pizza.
Now for comic Rocket, There are at least 3 instances I can think of at the top of my head where he's shown associated with pizza. There may be more.
In my least favorite comic portrayal of Rocket (Rocket Raccoon 2014 Issue 7) he describes pizza to the character Jink
Then him and Groot are shown having Pizza in Groot (2015) issue 6
Issue 2 of Rocket Raccoon: Grounded (2016) shows him eating pizza while sitting on a trash bin (assuming it was found in the trash because he was seen earlier eating a soft pretzel from a trash)

What is the best gotg comic to start with/buy first to read?
i would say it largely depends on what you want! have a look through and see what tickles your fancy.
generally though, guardians of the galaxy (2008) by abnett and lanning is widely considered the best run and for good reason. it’s tightly paced and full of character and defined the guardians. basically everything since has been riffing off that run. if you start here, make sure to finish it off with the thanos imperative, which is the real ending! and if you want a massive epic that shows how the guardians got together, alongside nova shenanigans, it can provide that too. you can read the annihilation and annihilation conquest events (they’re basically unofficial guardians books, everyone shows up and it’s how they are formed), then guardians of the galaxy (2008) alongside nova (2007) because they both spin out of annihilation, then at the end of those read the thanos imperative in which the two storylines converge again. it’s good stuff and beyond a couple of early 2000s-isms (gamora spends half the time basically naked. i mean, power move, but still) it has aged pretty well.
al ewing’s run is by far my favourite alongside that, but I’m not sure how well it would work as a jumping on point as it relies on a lot of prior knowledge of relationships and traumas and has a really big cast, some of whom aren’t exactly developed to their fullest potential because the book was prematurely cancelled. the three books we did get were great and al ewing did an amazing job characterising peter, rich and gamora in particular (rich specifically. legitimate perfection).
if you want something closer to the mcu to dip your toes into, the 2017 run by gerry duggan was decent. people don’t really talk about it much i guess because while it starts off alright it unfortunately finishes with a bit of a whimper with the infinity wars event. but by all means it’s a not-very-intimidating place to start. it has the five from the first movie as leads. it’s not exactly top tier gotg, as i said, but it works well enough if the movie is the dynamic you’re used to and you want more of something familiar to get started.
in terms of solo books, once and done, groot had a fantastic solo book in 2015 (at least I think it was 2015? it’s by jeff loveness) which I would recommend to literally anyone, gotg fan or not. that’s also a shout. yeah, read groot. it’s not a massive commitment and it’s very wholesome.
the star-lord grounded solo book i never shut up about is a favourite of mine but, again, it relies a lot on prior knowledge of peter as a character because he’s coming to terms with a lot of stuff about himself. that’s not to say it can’t be enjoyed as a new fan, it can and i know people who started with it and enjoyed it. i just think it’s better appreciated when you know more about what makes him tick. it’s inherently not a good representation of gotg as it normally is (no space shenanigans, it’s set entirely on a few streets of NYC) but it does a great job as a little character study of pete. but if you see the summary and think it looks good well, why not! <3
#generally just. Avoid Bendis and Humphries I guess is the general sentiment <3#feel free to ask about anything else if you’re interested in a book specifically!! i can’t imagine how confusing it is#coming into gotg comics nowadays#Like there’s so much it’s insane ahahaha

I’m pretty sure nothing’s been officially confirmed about how the 2023 miniseries fits into the comics canon. But I swear if marvel does anything to mess up Groot’s origin story in the 2015 comics imma start my villain arc.
#marvel#marvel comics#comics#gotg#groot#guardians of the galaxy#2023 groot comics#groot 2023 comics#2015 groot comics#groot 2015 comics#the 2015 version of groots origin has pretty much become the definitive version for me#groot defying his evil flora colossus society and not only becoming a hero#but also a more fulfilled individual inspite of his upbringing was some seriously powerful stuff#and added so much to his chracter#so the 2023 comics possibly throwing all that out the window#would absolutely suck man#I hope it’s just set an alternative universe#or maybe even a prequel from before flora colossi society became evil#maybe the groot we see in the 2023 comic is actually a younger version of the og king groot before he became an evil space tyrant#that would be pretty cool I think!

Throwback to 2014/2015 when these two were THE biggest romantic ship in the gotg fandom. Including smut.
Ok jokes aside, I adore Rocket and Groot’s relationship.

Iron Man
Staalman
Pas in 1983 zouden we Iron Man terugzien onder eigen naam.
Heroes Reborn
Daar zou in 2015 verandering in komen.

talking about groot 2015 again. sorry. it's the main love here and the reason why i am writing groot tbh.
i think it is very important to establish why groot is different from his kind because within my canon interpretation , he comes from a long line of very aggressive flora colossus. these flora colossi frequently collect humans to be used as sustenance. for groot to have curiosity towards human life , he has to first encounter said human.
enter hannah:
hannah is the first human that groot ever encounters. she is a little girl who was kidnapped by flora colossi from her home back on earth. groot has a very soft spot for her and will do anything to protect her. he doesn't quite know why he has such an adoration for her , he just kind of does. groot also as i have stated in the past chooses to not grow into his kaiju form unless it is truly necessary. being in the kaiju form will make him bloodthirsty and reckless. his kind frequently are in this form.
groot ultimately is exiled from his kind on planet x and later planet x is destroyed. groot has never known anyone of his kind that is as caring or endearing as humans are to him. this is yet another reason why he cares so deeply for life outside of his own kind.
this woman was his first ever friend. she's very important. she will be used in threads !! i really just wanted to detail her here as an 'npc' in groot's life. because ?? no one ever really talks about her when it comes to groot since she is erased from other comic interpretations entirely. it's always the guardians and groot's relationship with them. it all had to start somewhere though.
