€500,000 worth of Ambergris found in the intestines of a beached sperm whale of the Canary islands
"In one of his many digressions in Moby-Dick, the novelist Herman Melville dedicates an entire chapter to ambergris, which he describes as 'soft, waxy, and so highly fragrant and spicy, that it is largely used in perfumery … Who would think, then, that such fine ladies and gentlemen should regale themselves with an essence found in the inglorious bowels of a sick whale! Yet so it is!'"

An 80-kilogram ball of ambergris off the coast of Qurayat, Oman, found by 3 sailors in 2016 had the estimated value of around $2.7 million
The waxy lumps of whale waste have become a sought-after ingredient in perfumes, but their unusual appearance means people often confuse everything from fat to sewage and palm oil.
Ambergris is considered one of the most valuable raw materials in perfumery, but not all ambergris are equally valuable. Ambergris needs time to mature indicated by a whitish-gray or brownish-gray in color. to be in perfume.

My hobby is finding Moon Moon names that don't seem to be that because of the languages used.
Today's discover: Amber Bernstein.
"Bernstein" is German for "burn stone", which is the German name for amber (the fossilized tree resin).
Random etymology fun fact: "amber", the English word, dates back to Middle Persian "anbar", but it meant what we now call Ambergris: which is some waxy secretions of sperm whale bile ducts that wash up on beaches. The "gris" was added in Old French, because they called it "Grey amber", while what we normally call amber was "ambre jaune": yellow amber. Eventually we just called yellow amber "amber", while "Grey amber" kept the name, entering English as ambergris.

Swen Buckner -- » Grauer Amber « (grey amber/ ambre gris)
is a sound study for electric guitar, effects pedals (with expression pedal input) and an analogue monophonic synthesizer. Indeed -- a way too ambitious set-up for two hands, but worth trying it. Please find some short impressions from my performance during the Incentive Incidents V days at the Jazzschmiede Düsseldorf. Grey amber is a solid, waxy, flammable substance of a dull grey or blackish colour produced in the digestive system of sperm whales. Freshly produced ambergris has a marine, fecal odor. It acquires a sweet, earthy scent as it ages, commonly likened to the fragrance of isopropyl alcohol without the vaporous chemical astringency. Grey amber has been highly valued by perfume makers as a fixative that allows the scent to endure much longer, although it has been mostly replaced by synthetic ambroxide. This article was created without the help of artificial intelligence and/ or statistical analysis. From person to person, from me for people.

Can you do a Gris x Reader? I know we don’t know much about him, but I honestly see him as someone who’s a bit flamboyant. Maybe it’s about the reader who’s a witch’s apprentice, that’s interested in him?
I will happily build Gris’ fandom up with my own two hands. Also, if people want me to continue this, send in some asks for it~! Or I might just continue it anyways, like the idate x witch I’m doing.
Gris never was much interested in the whole witch and wizards. Idate got his ass handed to him by one however and that did catch his attention. So he decided to travel to the witch coven he knew about. “Howdy~” Gris leaned on the shore as he looked at the two witches. They were both rather cute, but the one with the smaller hat caught his eye. “What’s your name cutie?”
“I’m…N/A…” They were a bit shy, which honestly made Gris even more interested in them. The older witch sighed, protecting their apprentice.
“If you don’t mind sir, we are in the middle of a lesson…”
“Don’t mind me then~!” Gris crossed his arms and rested his head on them while he watched. He had to admit that the magic was rather pretty, even though it wasn’t really for him.
Once the lesson was over, he beckoned the younger witch to him, taking their hands. “Do you want to wander with me for a bit?”
“I have a few assignments I need to do before dinner…”
“Come on…just a few hours! Then we can do them together!” Gris hadn’t the faintest clue on how to complete that homework, but all he really wanted in that moment was to spend time with this new cutie.
“Well…okay, fine. But just for a few hours!” Gris grinned and nodded, quickly changing his form into his sperm whale form.
“Onto my back then~!” And off they went together into the sea.
They sat and giggled together on a lonely island, going through the assignments together. “My, you are just the cutest thing…” Gris smiled, gently tilting their head up towards his.
“You’re really good at flattering me…” The witch smiled and looked away, Gris gently pulling their face back towards his.
“…So I’ve heard you witches need familiars…how about I become yours?” N/A blinked a few times, then nodded, Gris’s smile spreading across his face.
“Perfect~! Oh…I must warn you that a friend of mine may be a bit…jealous…so do be careful~!”
“…What?

Wait yo, since I've been ecologyposting about ethersea, people know why the name Amber Gris is the best name in the world, right? Why it's the most phenomenal thing a person has ever said?
In case not: Ambergris is a weird waxy substance produced by sperm whale during digestion.
It's SO GOOD as a name for a weird funky ocean lady!!!!
Also,, the exact same level of humor as deciding there's a haunt called the fucking Cloaca

I desperately want everyone to know that the name of Justin's newest pc Amber Gris is a pun on the term ambergris which is this nasty stuff that sperm whales produce in their digestive system. Scientists are unsure whether it is vomited by the whales or passed through with fecal matter, but it is described as having a strong fecal odor. It is very flammable and was often used for things like fuel and perfume.

@tanadrin mentioned "amber" isnt germanic, so i looked up the etymology, and
mid-14c., ambre grice "ambergris; perfume made from ambergris," from the phrase in Old French (13c.) and Medieval Latin, from Arabic 'anbar "ambergris, morbid secretion of sperm-whale intestines used in perfumes and cookery" (see ambergris), which was introduced in the West at the time of the Crusades. Arabic -nb- often is pronounced "-mb-."
In Europe, amber was extended to fossil resins from the Baltic (late 13c. in Anglo-Latin; c. 1400 in English), and this has become the main sense as the use of ambergris has waned. Perhaps the perceived connection is that both were found washed up on seashores. Or perhaps it is a different word entirely, of unknown origin. Formerly they were distinguished as white or yellow amber for the Baltic fossil resin and ambergris "gray amber;" French distinguished the two substances as ambre gris and ambre jaune.
i guess amber wasnt that common until the modern period? also, they dont seem like similar substances? i guess theyre both kind of waxy/resinous? idk, its very odd. anyway, this made me google baltic amber, and
The Baltic region is home to the largest known deposit of amber, called Baltic amber or succinite. It dates from 44 million years ago (during the Eocene epoch).[1] It has been estimated that these forests created more than 100,000 tons of amber.[2] Today, more than 90% of the world's amber comes from Kaliningrad Oblast of Russia. It is a major source of income for the region; the local Kaliningrad Amber Combine extracted 250 tonnes of it in 2014,[3] 400 tonnes in 2015.[4]
?!?! its not clear to me why theres such a ridiculous amount of amber here, its so common it washes up on the beach! it seems like the three major areas were on the coast at the time of formation (theres also significant deposits on the coast of japan). something about coastal conifers is really good for producing huge amounts of amber i guess, keeps them preserved or something. they were definitely massive forests but there have been massive forests like everywhere so that cant be enough. this source says
When resin is secreted, it’s not certain that it will be turned into amber. More often than not, it gets weathered away. First of all the resin needs to be chemically stable and not degrade over time. It has to be resistant to sun, rain, extreme temperatures, and microorganisms like bacteria and fungi. There are two types of resin produced by plants that can fossilize. Terpenoids are produced by gymnosperms (conifers) and angiosperms. They are composed of ring structures made from isoprene (C5H8) units. Phenolic resins are only produced by Angiosperms. An extinct type of trees called medullosans produced another unique type of resin.
The next factor is that the resin needs to be in the right conditions to fossilize. Young amber could be transported in seawater (it floats), and then buried under sediment to fossilize. In the Baltics, glaciers knocked down many trees and buried them, allowing them to fossilize. Wet clay and sand sediments preserve resin well because they don’t contain much oxygen and the sediments eventually transform into rocks. Intense pressure and temperatures cause the resin to become a solid orange gem. First molecular polymerization forms copal (young amber) and then the heat and pressure drive out terpenes and complete the amber transformation
so i guess its exactly like normal fossils, needs to be buried in sediment just right to preserve it, and forests+glaciers+coast isnt common enough in large enough quantities to cause other massive deposits? anyway, neat!

it occurred to me as i started listen to TAZ today that some people might not recognize where Amber Gris' name comes from? maybe this is more common knowledge but I only learned this recently
ambergris ('Grey Amber') is this gross waxy stuff that sperm whales make in their intestines, and is pretty rare so it was expensive, and used as perfume and incense even though apparently on its own it smells kinda bad, because it's basically poop-adjacent
so Justin's character has a nautical name, but it's this thing that's rare and useful but also kinda gross and led to a lot of whale hunting

Writes a fic. Types amber eyes. Thinks of substituting amber with a less used word. Goes to Wikipedia for inspiration (don’t comment on that). Thinks how fossilized tree resin colored eyes sounds. Keeps amber.
Remembers she’s Greek and decides to use the Greek word for amber (elektron) that has a poetic meaning and comes along with a myth.
Keeps reading the post on Wikipedia. “The word was adopted in Middle English in the 14th century as referring to what is now known as ambergris (ambre gris or "grey amber"), a solid waxy substance derived from the sperm whale.”
Closes the tab as quickly as possible.

Zoox, hence the Zoo-x joke, Amber Gris, a pun off of ambergris, which is basically sperm whale vomit, and I believe Devo LeMane? May be spelled with extraneous letters cause he’s French, so possibly something Deveux LeMaigne, we have no way of knowing.
already in love with the new Ethersea protagonists but I desperately need name spellings, especially for Divo(?)

For the ambergris gem: pallet, role, rank, personality, power
“Ambergris again and weapon (sorry lol)”All I can think about is that Bob’s Burgers episode, lol.
Ambergris:
Weapon:Round balls or sharp jagged pieces to throw at the enemy“Amber is found in many forms: large blocks, balls or egg shapes [sometimes called "kidneys"], broken layers or strata, small jagged pieces, very hard rolls.”http://www.ambergris.fr/identification_of_ambergris.html
Ability:Water, since it comes from an ocean creature.“Ambergris (/ˈæmbərɡriːs/ or /ˈæmbərɡrɪs/, Latin: ambra grisea, Old French: ambre gris), ambergrease or grey amber, is a solid, waxy, flammable substance of a dull grey or blackish colour, produced in the digestive system of sperm whales.”https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambergris
Personality:I couldn’t find anything for this section :(
Homeworld Ranking:Due to the fact that it is technically waste product, I don’t think they would rank very high. Perhaps they are a servant or builder. Since they are a product from a sea creature, they would be working in a water based location.
