What makes a pair rare?

For some this may be obvious with their faves, especially if you feel your the only one making content for a certain pairing. And with this being a relatively more casual event, this event will not be policing what fans think is or isn't rare outside of the big four.

Who are the big four?

Also, there are ships that used to be more popular than they are now, such as churboose and washlina. It's best to use your own judgement and general traffic on tumblr these days to determine whether your works would fit in to this event.

A good way to check is by seeing how many fics a pairing has on AO3 (rare usually being less than 100) and checking the last time a ship tag was posted under on both AO3 and tumblr. If it's been quite some time since content has been posted or if the content is posted by the same one or two people (maybe this person is you), then it's most likely going to be rare enough!

Again this isn't an event that will gatekeep or police your content. This year is meant to be fun and casual! We all love rvb and our ships. This event is simply a space to share with each other!

LONG POST IM SO SORRY I HAD A LOT OF FEELINGS

(Im so sorry this got so long, but i got emotional while writing it so please bear with me, read this like its the morning paper while u eat breakfast or something i have alot to say)

Before I go into the things I didn't like I do want to focus on some positives.

-Like I said in an earlier post, Geoff's acting…he absolutely killed it, and maybe this is because I'm a little bit Geoff/Grif biased but he was giving so much emotion and everyone else felt a little bit flat. Also only he could have delivered the "Come with me" line with so much Homoeroticism -I Had a pretty fun time watching the fight in the second half, The references to Monty we're sweet and getting to see Tex and Carolina fight together was pretty epic! -A good handful of jokes got me good. "23rd in my class" Shelia translating Caboose's Spanish to Lopez

Ok……. the next bit of this will get a little bit negative, but I do want to say this is coming from a place of deep love and care for this series. I have run this blog for like 6/7 years now and I've been a fan of this show for double that. My biggest fear is that fans get the same treatment we did when no one liked RVBZero. I have criticisms. This is a 21 year old series that so many people have had a part in and so many have loved. I was not looking for perfection, I wasn't even looking for something good. I was looking for an ending to the stories of characters people have held in their hearts for 21 years. Unfortunately, what I feel we were left with was a hastily thrown together hour of basically nothing.

-Why weren't they friends…..Why weren't they friends…No one cared for the others. I understand that we have semi warped perceptions of the characters from fanon works and things of that nature. But even in canon, the reds and blue care about each other. On their own team and the other team. Simmons, Grif, Tucker, and Caboose spent MONTHS together in chorus and same for Donut/Sarge/Wash. I've recently rewatched blood gulch and Caboose and Sarge have a great dynamic! Tucker and Grif canonically get along pretty well. Simmons was ON BLUE TEAM for like a hot minute there. THEY KNOW EACH OTHER AND CARE ABOUT EACH OTHER. This was zero percent present in this film. No one had any motivation to look for Tucker. No one cared that it was Tuckers body inside the suit. THE REDS LEFT CABOOSE FOR DEAD!!!!!! THEY JUST LEFT HIM!!!!

-Tucker, I'm so sorry baby girl, this was supposed to be your arc, your moment. You were hardly in it. No build up to how he became the Meta. The scene where he breaks out of it to not kill caboose was the best part of the arc. And he just wakes up and remembers it "like someone elses Nightmare??" ok sure

-Wash………………WHAT THE FUCK???? WHAT THE FUCK???????????????? WHAT THE FUCK??????? WHAT THE FUCK???? TO RUIN THIS MANS ENTIRE CHARACTER ARC BY MAKING HIM COMPLETELY OBSOLETE. PUTTING HIM IN SOME RANDOM HOSPITAL FOR AN UNKNOWN INJURY THAT HAPPENS OFF SCREEN AND ISN'T EXPLAINED. HAVE HIM HALUCINATING DOC FOR SOME FUCKING REASON. HAVE HIM SHOW UP TO THE FINAL BATTLE AND DO ABSOLUTLEY NOTHING BUT JUMP OFF A FUCKING CLIFF AND NOT SAY A WORD TO ANY OF THE RED AND BLUES I AM LIERALLY ABOUT TO FUCKING CRY TYPING THIS I AM LITERALLY SO FUCKING PISSED OFF. AGENT WASHINGTON, THE CHARACTER THAT WAS SO HAPPY IN THE SEASON RIGHT BEFORE CHORUS JUST TO BE ON BLUE TEAM AND HAVE A FUCKING FAMILY AGAIN. JUST SIDELINE HIM FOR NO FUCKING REASON AND THEN NOT LET HIM SPEAK TO ANY OF HIS FRIENDS EXCEPT CAROLINA AND DEAD DOC. AND DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE FACT THAT TUCKER BEING THE META WAS LITERALLY A PLOT POINT CATERED TO HAVE WASH BE INVOLVED. THIS IS LIKE AGENT WASHINGTON ANGST BAIT 101. YES IM A TUCKINGTON SHIPPER BUT PUT ALL SHIPPING ASIDE, THEY WERE STILL FRIENDS, THEY WERE FRIENDS THEY WERE FRIENDS.

Grimmons. I am disappointed. But really not surprised. Honestly for everything I disliked I thought Grimmons was handled ok… at this point im like….. they couldn't even throw us a bone. company was dying, final season airing, and they couldn't even throw us a solid Grimmons queerbait joke. Its whatever….I don't wanna get too upset about shipping because at the end of the day, ships becoming canon isn't what shipping is all about (says Tumblr user "RVB-Canon-Grimmons) you get what im saying.

-Donut…..where was he…..Fucking Homophobic honestly

-DOC IS DEAD?????????????????????????????? FUCKING WHY???

-Sarge's death was fine, I'm not upset by it I just didn't feel like it was emotionally satisfying. Especially after the shock of them leaving Caboose and the much better scene of tucker fighting the meta's control over him to not hurt caboose.

-PEOPLE CALLED U SIR ALL THROUGHOUT CHORUS SIMMONS WHAT THE FUCK??????????? WHY IS SIMMONS PROMOTED AND INCHARGE OF NO ONE???? WHY DID GRIF LEAVE HIM???

I'm fine with doomed yaoi, im fine with obliterated yoai, but this was downright nuclear yoai. 7th circle of hell yoai. rapture yoai. multiversal implosion yoai. an all powerful deity came down and teased me with my dream ("come with me") then when i thought it was safe and my dream would manifest they threw me into The Pit for eternity to ever contemplate that the idea even crossed my mind yaoi.

My feelings will likely pass with time and I'll remember that im taking Restoration as a simulation (with parts taken from Restoration as post-s17 stuff), but im still REELING from how a celebration, swansong, love letter to the fans, didn't give us--dare i say--the biggest and most widely known "FAN-BASED THING" (heavy quotations bc we all know its cannon) from Red vs Blue. I get it was their thing, Grif leaves military, Simmons leads. BUT IT WAS ESTABLISHED GRIF COULD LITERALLY NOT STAND BEING AWAY FROM THE REDS AND BLUES AND SIMMONS HAS NOBODY TO LEAD RRRRRRRR.

season 19 was a let down 😭😭

i’m sure that over a year of hype doesn’t help my case here but i really was expecting something a little better 😭

i don’t mean to be too much of a critic in this post and sorry if i seem like i’m complaining but man 🧍‍♂️ full review here we go

sarges death was expected and the character arc that simmons got from it was pretty well done , he was cool — sarges death did just seem kind of rushed but that’s probably also time constraints , nobody seemed super affected by it tho and that kinda put me off ☹️ sure the reds were like Sad right after he died , and grif + simmons had the moment at his grave, but it’s literally not brought up again ? simmons just gets to be a leader kinda and tucker doesn’t get told he killed sarge, nobody else brings it up after the climax?? not even during the climax as they fight meta again ?

^ although sarges final moments were done very nicely and the va’s had a ton of emotion ❤️

along with that, wash’s acting was amazing as always

grif was characterized really weirdly throughout the first half of the season - i’m guessing they tried to make him the “straight man” of the group but it kinda fell flat because he just seemed irrationally angry every single time he spoke 😭 he kinda evened out as it went on tho so that’s better than nothing

Simmons was very kind this season that was interesting and cool He didn’t have a care in the world

animation was wonky at times but it was there - fight scenes weren’t monty oum style of crazy but they were creative with them and ill give them that! good callbacks during the fight

character callbacks were cool! i’m glad we got a little bit of kai (no reunion with grif tho so that sucks), dylan was there but she was kinda characterized weird, grey there, agent one (???) for some reason, 479er!!!!! she was well done and she fit really well into the plot!, no checkup on chorus life which was kinda sad (no lieutenants boohoohoo) some of the callbacks felt out of place tho

i don’t like how they handled tex cause even though it was cool she was back , i feel like we’ve done this dance a thousand times

also carolina quite literally came out of nowhere ?? how did she just ? drop from the sky what ??? LOL

absolutely no donut at all ? there was like one mention of him that i can remember ? lopez is just forgotten about back at the bases ??? i don’t know if the donut thing was something behind the scenes but Uhh

music wasnt up to par - they just reused old songs basically , the weird song that played during the “Memories” sequence wasn’t good

i’m not the hugest fan of the ais in general so i don’t think about them too much but i feel like sigma wasn’t characterized in the same way he was in the freelancer seasons — in pfl he kind of subtly manipulated maine into becoming meta etc etc but for tucker , he basically just like😭 tortured him WHICH IS PROBABLY CAUSE LIKE tucker knows This guy is evil Ahhhh!!! but still that was a little weird

no grimmons sad day for the rvb fandom - some scenes could be read as grimmons, like grif basically inviting simmons to go with him , i’m confused on why simmons stayed because simmons himself literally said One last mission ? so idk what he’s doing bro idk if he’s staying in blood gulch or what — grif just straight up leaves and like ? are they gonna see eachother again orrr ? what’s happening

the ending felt rushed and kinda weird - just vibes , i think i’m biased because i now realize that not a lot can beat the s13 ending , but even so , grif just kinda leaves and that’s the end 😭

i feel like we didn’t get a whole lot of conclusions for all the characters even tho that’s what was promised

overall i’m probably giving this a solid 5-6/10 , the season was overall very hit or miss in some aspects and scenes

what i liked about rvb: restoration (spoilers ahead)

okay i've spent a lot of time complaining to some friends today about what i didn't like about restoration, so i'm going to tell all of YOU what i did like, because i don't like to inundate myself with negativity!

Caboose

as a caboose fan, as a caboose girlie, as someone who has written a bunch of caboose fic - i fucking stayed winning last night. burnie keeping caboose knowing how to speak spanish was excellent. caboose was treated so well, he really wasn't the butt of a joke (the bit about epsilon programming in the "shut up caboose" lines was very funny to me, it's peak church and caboose and the fact that they came out and weird times was so so funny)

follow-up caboose point: i LOVE that he's too unpredictable for epsilon, it's truly caboose in a nutshell. and he was treated as capable and able to do things. he was also so GOOD. i'm absolutely not over this and i probably never will be:

caboose deciding to bring back tex because he wanted them to win? flawless. no notes. excellent.

Grimmons

i knew as soon as it was announced that burnie was writing this season that we were not going to get the grimmons ending of our dreams (yes i saw that google drive, yes it haunts me forever) but this isn't about what we didn't get

it's been 21 years since "why are we here" and i loved the shots of the two of them standing together. it always feels right when they're a pair, no matter what's happening.

i'm going to take what i got and write the fix it fic later. simmons gave grif what he always wanted - a way out. he gave him those papers, he said "here, you can leave, no strings attached" and the almost first words out of grif's mouth were: "come with me." it's romance, to me. i'll take it.

willing to go out in a blaze of glory together. say no more.

Sarge

i really wasn't sure if this was going to be a joke or not when it started happening. meta!tucker pulled out his sword and sarge was too close to the door and i said outloud GET AWAY FROM THE DOOR and damn

i know it was SUPER cheesy, but i was a fan of the sarge-grif interaction there at the end. sarge's animosity for grif has always been played up for laughs, but the last few seasons (retconned simulations or not) really strengthened red team. and the chorus trilogy did, too.

man i loved these lines:

also sarge going back for caboose was so so so so good to me. "one of us" - yeah man, caboose is one of your boys. you gotta go BACK for your BOY. and he fucking did. i really wasn't sure if this death was going to stick, it got me pretty hard. (he didn't HERK-BLEH so idk if it counts but)

Tucker/Sigma

META!TUCKER RULES

conceptually, i fucking love this. i think it would have been nicer to get a bit more pre!meta tucker and see what was going on. his absence is handwaved a bit but if i'm able to remove seasons 15-18 from my brain, i'm able to focus more and say yes, ok.

i do have questions, like what was he acting like? did he do anything strange? did he disappear RIGHT away or did he linger and then go? it seems like wash doesn't know, and i think if wash knew tucker was the meta, he'd have been a lot more concerned (the bit at the end with wash and doc and tucker being taken care of was nice)

but i'm OBSESSED with this idea that tucker's stuck in there and he doesn't want to be there. really genuinely i love sigma and how nasty that little shit is. it's interesting that epsilon has the memories, but sigma still knows EXACTLY what the director did to the alpha and, even while it hates him for that, it's completely willing to use that on another person:

ugh MY BOY. it was nice to have tucker back, i was sad we had to see him like this and i wish we had more time with this concept, it's very delicious and it's one thing i do LIKE about the later seasons being retconned.

Wash and Doc

okay so i had to go back and watch some of the last episode of season 13 to understand this better, because i hadn't watched season 13 in a REALLY long time. once my memory was jogged i understood what was happening better. to recap, if you're like me and forgot:

wash and carolina were on the evac ship headed towards the reds and blues. after they win their fight post-epsilon death, it seems that the evac goes wrong and wash is injured. in that scuffle, doc dies getting wash to safety. this seems to be a breaking point for wash and doc manifests as a hallucination that Dr. Grey seems to be aware of. she never address that it IS doc, but she (and ADMIRAL FUCKING DONUT OK) are aware wash isn't doing well.

this was something i saw on reddit - doc being dead was foreshadowed pretty well! here's the image from the reddit page:

one shadow! i'm sure a lot of y'all saw this but i was busy thinking wash didn't sound like shannon mccormick (it was him! he just isn't talking about the show online really it seems - i haven't checked his tumblr for a while, but he's p much silent on twitter, i assume he came back after some negotiation because he and RT no longer work together, even before RT was dissolved)

EDIT: upon rewatching this it appears to move WITH doc but i do LIKE the one shadow thing so i'm gonna stick with this

also doc disappears from frame whenever other people are talking. no one ever addresses him, and i assume because he says doc's name while talking about the meta, Dr. Grey is like ah yep he's hallucinating again.

upon first viewing i thought this was a little rushed, and i still believe it was kinda shoved in there at the end, but after sitting with it and doing a little season 13 refresher, i actually really like this and i think it's very bittersweet. wash doing his best to cope with his guilt and thinking about the person who saved him and having them live on like this is incredibly hard, but it also feels incredibly REAL for his specific history and trauma

speaking of VA's - michael malconian! honestly i was so worried when joel was fired that we were going to lose caboose forever. it made me SO sad to think about, but when they started making some PSA's and kind of made some jokes about the voice change (and in restoration!) i was much more hopeful. i really think he did a SUPER good job capturing caboose. my favorite scene in red vs blue is caboose saying goodbye to church in season 15 - and i think my second is now michael's delivery of caboose telling tucker he's already forgiven him if he decides to kill him. he just totally knocked it out of the park.

and just speaking of...him.

there's a lot i wasn't happy with, and i guess i could make a list about that, too. i feel like it's a lot of things y'all probably weren't happy with either, but this is what i DID love. and i think there's some more i'm just not remembering and i think i will come to really love this. someone already said it best imo: it was good enough and that's ok. i grew up with this show, seeing it end was incredibly emotional for me, but it feels right to say goodbye.

Grimmons and Grimmons fans in shambles. What do you mean he's frigging leaving. What. How did we have "Come with me" and "Goodbye Simmons" in the same movie. That "come with me" made me verbally say "Grimmons..." out loud and you just make it not happen? You're killing me guys. Making S19 non-canon just for this alone /hj (but also /s)

Spent most of the movie either going "WOAH X CHARACTER IS HERE" or "what on earth is going on". Overall it was... eh?

I liked the whole Doc & Wash thing, Tucker's turmoil, Chex scene at the end and Simmons being a bit of a badass but otherwise it was ok... Caboose did also get to shine a bit (whilst also getting grabbed by the throat a lot (leave him alone)) so that is actually quite nice.

I might need to let my thoughts simmer a bit cuz I can feel myself pingponging on how I felt about X and Y. Overall... I think... considering the state of RT and constraints, it wasn't too bad? But compared to other seasons... yeaaah.

I think I'll have S17 as my jumpoff point (S14-17 you are canon to me), but I will consider some things from S19 to be canon. Just not sure what yet. (Simmons can be a cool guy in canon though... he deserves that :])

I'm glad Burnie got to end his show, at the very least.

short story:

long story: ohh god what the fuck was that what the fuck was that. why did donut only have a single line in simmons' thoughts. why did carolina only appear at the end. the audacity to retcon season 15 onwards to make an even worse season. killing sarge. i feel like i just watched a marvel movie.

just. some of the characterisation was bad. its strange that the reds had to be convinced to go on the big mission to save everyone when they spent the whole show growing into their responsibilities and doing heroic shit. its strange they left caboose behind to get killed by the meta after they spent the whole show learning to get along and be ride or die with eachother. on the OPPOSITE end its strange that sarge gave grif that whole speech about being hard on him because he knew he could be better. lol no. he is a jerk to him because he doesnt care about how grif feels. and obviously, its strange that grif left simmons at the end, because being separated from the reds and blues would drive him crazy and fuck you that was his best friend for 18 seasons.

fans respond well to emotional moments in the previous seasons but this felt like an emotional jerk off session. just a whole lot of unearned emotional moments and deep conversations that felt stunted and out of place. the funeral scene was ten minutes long. there were so many conversations about wash's feelings (when carolina started to ask him about why he felt he had to earn doc's aid i was so over it. why are we delving into his self esteem issues right now after everything that happened.) there was always a balance between comedy/drama and they did not manage that. having more scenes wouldve made the moments feel earned and i know they couldnt do that but. i still wouldnt have included a lot of this stuff.

there was a lot of hand holding, with the excessive emotional conversations, the long, constant recaps of stuff that happened in previous seasons and the show-dont-tellness. it is obvious that epsilon split himself into other fragments. it is obvious that tucker is in the meta suit and he has all the fragments and is evil. maybe if they spent less time explaining everything they could fit more stuff lol. that is also something i feel applies to all the emotional shit, they could have used a lot more subtlety.

if they wanted a rounded season focused on reflection of all the previous seasons and character arcs (which it did feel like they were trying to do tbf) i think jason's original s18 pitch wouldve been good for it. this did feel like a giant collection of plot beats and i heard it was supposed to be a trilogy but was rushed so that makes sense and explains a lot of the problems. under no amount of time constraints could i forgive them fumbling grimmons though. fuck. they only have themselves to blame for that.

some things i liked: how tex was handled (that made me so happy that was so sweet. best tex lives fic and its written into the show<3 i know tex's VA left on bad terms with RT so the fact that she came back just makes me. god i love tex), carolina appeared that made me happy even though she shouldve been here the whole time but whatever. her and tex fighting the meta together was awesome. caboose snapping tucker out of it (im such a big fan of them<33). wash throwing himself off a cliff because thats the best way he can think to solve a situation. amazingly in character. any time the reds goofed off it made me giggle and kick my feet. the church youtube skit committed egregious sins i already mentioned but i think it was cute that it was in a 2D art style. the zoom security guards and basically the few bits of comedy always landed and were really funny.

anyways. i cant expect them to make a good season while their company is getting shut down. this was definitely rushed, probably not a finalised draft and done under time constraints. i dont blame them, i am not upset that it didnt deliver. but that does not mean it was good. im going to pretend it was another epsilon simulation. and im still writhing at them retconning season 15 for this.

Uhhhhh oh boy. Out of all the characters. For multiple reasons I must ask y’all not to judge me.

Why I like them: To be honest, of the MCs she’s probably the one I’m least attached to. I think I started liking her in season 15. Waitwait— I liked her interactions w/ Epsilon I think. IDK, been a minute since I’ve watched the seasons after BGC. Some of the fanart does have me simping, but we’re focusing on canon here and canon face reveal Carolina looked like… 30 minimum (I know she wasn’t but she looked like a mom to me idk), which is still old to me so *shrug*. Season 15-17 was great for Carolina imo. But fandom Carolina is really what won me over. And not just because she’s hot! I mean— FUCK! Can we— Can we change the subject?

Why I don’t: She just felt so… flat? cold? for the longest time. Obviously that changed with time, but I did not care much for her initially.

OTP: This is gonna sound cringey as hell, but since I don’t have a ship with her in the show— one of my characters in upcoming series Queer Canyon. Spinach (pronounced spinahk) is chatty and over the top and works best with someone who tolerates and enjoys that about her while still grounding her to keep her from getting herself into too much trouble. I think they’d be cute as hell together. In my defense, I realized if they met Spinach would fall for her months before I started simping for Carolina art. Carolina is exactly her type and as soon as I realized I started planning a potential crossover that may never see the light of day. (to clarify, in the planned 3 seasons of Queer Canyon they don’t meet the official RvB characters. Different simulation outpost, different freelancers, this is just a fun what-if ship) I am not opposed to Carolina ships though. They’re all pretty cute, I just don’t personally ship any of them I guess? Maybe I’ll pursue a ship in my fanonverse with her eventually, but currently I don’t have one planned.

More analytical thoughts under the cut because I can properly reflect now. These ones aren't as stream-of-consciousness and are more put together, looking at the story and characters as a whole.

RVB RESTORATION SPOILERS; TLDR at the end.

My ultimate issue was, as I told several people, that so many aspects of the movie felt forced. I understand why, obviously (possible time crunch, low crew, low resources, etc) but it's a shame because the premise was good.

The idea of Epsilon's memories of the AI metastablizing during the Staff fight was super interesting. It needed time in the oven, though. Half the main cast got robbed (Donut, Kai, Carolina…hell, Tucker was there the WHOLE time but as a vessel for plot, barely as an individual) and the other half didn't feel entirely genuine.

I think, out of everyone present, Sarge felt the most "right" to me. Like, yeah, that was SARGE, and even if the writing couldn't deliver on character at all times his voice acting did. And his death was…just not fitting, and even if the subversion is normally funny, it ruined the entire weight of the moment for me.

They clearly wanted to do something cool with this season, right? Like, here's one of our heroes who has become the villain, we need to get everyone here. We need to have a final big hurrah, emotional turbulence, etc. It just didn't work, though, which is frustrating. If this were a normal RVB season, it'd be a little less disappointing that it couldn't fulfill those aspects, but as the last one (again: acknowledging the possible production issues) the problems became way more poignant to me.

I didn't care. For a LOT of the time, I felt no emotional attachment to what was going on, or to any of the characters. I didn't see this as "Oh, this is their last big adventure," it was kinda just nothing to me. I got more emotional over Lopez appearing for 1 minute than I did over LITERALLY anything else (but then again I have a very specific kind of illness that makes me only care about Lopez).

There was something in the way it was all written; Grif felt wrong to me the entire time. Simmons wasn't doing anything interesting until getting thrust into a new position, which was fun, but his promotion barely changed much plot-wise but show he was always fit for that role. Caboose was okay but I never like how Caboose is written anyway so the bar is low. Wash was again reduced to a mental health show—because they didn't get that out of the way the other two seasons—which severely reduced his weight in the entirety of the plot. (The portrayal was whatever, BTW. My problem is that it didn't feel like Wash because he had nothing else going for him, like he can only have one thing or the other.)

I wish Tucker had been involved in the destruction of the memory unit. Carolina AGAIN only showing up to forward a man's development (my BIGGEST RVB pet peeve)…Sheila randomly coming back for a cameo then fucking off…Lopez immediately getting written out…Donut and Kai didn't even GET to be part of the LAST SEASON (hoping their VAs were just busy?)…it didn't feel like a proper goodbye. It wasn't the Reds and Blues, it was Sarge and Grimmons and Caboose, because who cares about anyone else?

It felt rushed. Or, like, they had so many ideas that they couldn't figure out how to crop it down to an hour and a half. Again, it needed more time, but as it stands the writing just didn't resonate with me in any meaningful way.

I will forever be the RVB fan that Rooster Teeth loves to mock and circlejerk about, sure, but most other people go into this show SO optimistic and dismissive about its faults so I don't mind pointing them out. This season ranks squarely between Shisno and Zero to me. It's kinda nothing, much like everything after 13 is. Oh well. Still think 13 would've been the perfect end to the show.

Regardless, it was at least fun to watch in some places. As a woman liker I was losing my mind when Sheila, Niner, Tex, and Lina appeared. Lopez was there and I clapped and hollered and cheered. But it was still not my ideal way to see the show go out! Godspeed RVB you changed my life. Rest easy.

TLDR: Didn't feel like a good "final season", but I assume a lot of it was rushed. I didn't have much emotional attachment throughout it. It was fun if nothing else.

RVB: RESTORATION SPOILERS under cut, very rambly, TLDR at the end.

The premise was interesting! I think I (personally) would've appreciated it way more if it had actually followed RVB13 directly, but that's beyond anyone's control. Tucker becoming the Meta is great, it would've been nice to see a real-time progression into it. Kinda sucked that Tucker himself didn't get as much focus as a character, but they probably didn't have time to squeeze in anything past Sigma mentally torturing him and Tucker's passing comments about not wanting to help him.

The animation was okay. I won't flame it because they were probably on a time crunch/low on crew, but some parts of it looked worse than others. Action sequences looked pretty good though.

They were trying to do a "final encore" thing by bringing back some old characters (even as cameos), which is, like. Fun? But I feel like focusing so much on Freelancer seasons (with Niner, Wash's hallucinations, Tex, the Meta) snubbed Chorus, which is fine, but a little sad to have the final season reflect on people from the past but not show any Chorusan past Grey. It's RVB, though, so the cast is way too huge for that shit to work out smoothly anyway.

Sarge's death sucked. I think I laughed through the whole thing because I was so baffled. It was expected, and while the comedy of it all fit him well, I just don't think it was good as like. His last ride, you know? He didn't die a valiant death, the comedy lead up was an "oh god don't do it like THIS please" moment for me. Subversion is fun but falls flatter in the very last installment of a show that's been going on for two decades. I kinda? liked that Grif was mourning it, but because his death was so lackluster the entire "This is the end for me" speech didn't grab me.

Seeing as she's my favorite Blue, I'm very happy they brought Sheila back, but bringing characters back randomly without…much explanation (did they explain that? Maybe I missed it) felt weird to me. I loooved Sheila's bits in the season but it felt like a forced cameo. Niner was similar, even if people wanted her back, but at least she had Sheila to explain her presence. Making FLISS and Sheila the same person was a crazy move I need to write a dissertation on though.

Speaking of feeling forced, half of Grif and Simmons's conversations felt so ingenuine. Like they were shoehorned in to MAKE them bicker and not natural. I knew (the second the season was announced) that they weren't going to do shit for Grimmons, but for ONCE I didn't really find…ANY of their interactions especially riveting. Simmons letting Grif leave was HILARIOUS from a meta standpoint. Physically splitting them up at the end as one last fuck you to the gay people.

Caboose felt better than he does most seasons. Still an ableist mess in some places but I loved his IDGAF attitude. The big Meta fight was just fun for him. He just wanted to win. He was fucking with Lopez on purpose, speaking Spanish and misunderstanding him. He should've been more of a little shit earlier on. His voice acting sounded good! Inflection is always annoying but it felt less…egregious this time?

Donut got fucking robbed?! Kai too?! What was the point of giving them development. There were so many places where Donut would've been great to have in! Throwing the memory unit at Tex as a parallel to their BGC rivalry, helping Wash through his problems, IDK. Sucks.

When the fuck did Doc die. Why him. (< Rhetorical questions.) Wash mental health stuff is awesome, though, I love psychotic Wash, even if the portrayal was a little predictable (to someone who was paying attention. I was thinking about Lopez) and imperfect. I'm kinda glad his issues were focused on without him being a major character. PISSED Carolina only showed up on his behalf and stuck around for his sake, can't a girl live for herself sometimes…

Ummm. Lopez was there. I want to wring him like a wet towel. He's medicated as fuck and got to talk to someone who speaks Spanish…and his WIFE was there…I'm so glad he was having as best a time he could and SOOOO glad they wrote him out early like I anticipated (just personally because I love-hate him, but it was cheap). Go on an adventure with Sheila gayboy. Run away from all of this.

TLDR: Overall, solid 7/10. I went into it expecting a 5-6, but was pleasantly surprised by it overall. It felt VERY forced in a lot of places, the pacing felt bizarre sometimes, I still don't even know where exactly this is placed in the overall timeline (and I don't care), but they did some fun things. I'm so glad it's over I hope I never have to see official RVB content again.

It has a ton of new characters and none of the original Blood Gulch crew so I know a lot of people are hesitant about it, but I think it’s cool. while I love me the reds and blues, new characters are always fun!(also, Fiona Nova is one of the voice actors!(sorry, Achievement Hunter fan)) But I’m just curious what you think, since a lot of your content is about Grif and Simmons. I’m just hoping people give it a chance before shooting it down.

Oh dear gods. Okay, so first of all (because I’ve seen how discourse around this sore subject can evolve) – not liking something does not mean you hate on it. Content can be *good*, it can be full of passion and talent, and you may still not like it because taste is individual. This is a horrible way to start a post, but I just want to make it clear. To not like the new season does not mean you hate on Torrian’s work. You are not obligated to like it. On the other hand, this does not mean you are allowed to hate on someone’s work – that means nasty comments, messages, harassment, being a bitch about it. Great, now we have that distinction made clear, time to the second point:

I have not watched the first episode yet. That means I’m probably a horrible person to answer this. As it turned out, I cancelled my First subscription a few weeks ago – I simply didn’t use it enough for it to be worth the money when RvB wasn’t airing. Of course, my membership ran out like two days before the new episode got posted. If I still had my membership, I would have checked it out. For now, I will wait and probably try to buy a small membership just to check out the entire season when it airs.

There is a lot of stuff to be excited about. I can see the passion there is in this season. The graphics looks amazing, the pace looks fast in a good way, and when the trailer dropped, I actually found myself already somewhat liking the new characters (though I admit I still have trouble keeping track of them. Lot of new characters, only watched the trailer once. I’ll get a hang of it – hah, at least this show doesn’t clash with my faceblindness). I was actually getting quite hyped.

(then (AND STOP READING IF YOU DON’T WANT TO READ A SPOILER. A LITTLE SPOILER I CAN’T EVEN CONFIRM,  I JUST READ POSTS ABOUT IT) I discovered that apparently the first episode contains Wash angst and whump, and I admit, I straight up groaned and got bored. I feel like that road’s been used too many freaking times, and it just threw me off. Not enough that I don’t want to watch the thing when it comes out, but again, for now that’s not even an option for me).

New cast can be good. I admit, I wasn’t that hyped about Fiona �� because I don’t know who she was. Again, look, this isn’t my hating on someone (sorry for being paranoid, again, the discourse had installed a permanent fear in me of not being supportive enough = being a hater), I just haven’t watched AH for years, so that promotion wasn’t really aimed for me. Still happy for her, I’m sure she’ll be great, and now I guess I’ll somewhat get to know her, heh! I do, however, know of Ryan, and I discovered he’s in it, and I admit, that got me excited, mainly because now I can just picture an evil Andersmith. Is it evil Andersmith? Probably not. Would I mind an evil Andersmith? No. Actually, just give me more LTs. I really wouldn’t have minded a season without the Reds and Blues if we got the LTs instead.

But that’s the main issue, isn’t it? No Reds and Blues. I feel like we should all admit that this is a big thing – and it can be a legit reason for people to not like the new season (again, holy shit my anxiety is acting up, not liking this season does not mean it can’t be good, it means some just won’t enjoy it). That is fair. If you’ve lasted 17 seasons so far, it means you must like the characters. That’s sorta what RvB is for. It’s character driven. Doesn’t matter if you’re here for virgin Blue Team or chad Red Team, but it’s in the name, you know. Reds and Blues.

So that’s why the news about this season felt a bit like a blow. Because, and I say this proudly, I’m here for Grif (and Simmons. And Red Team, I guess. Carolina’s an honorary Red. So is Caboose. Suck it, Blue Team). To know I wouldn’t really be seeing him was jarring. And yeah, I’ve sorta left the fandom, but this isn’t just due to Zero. I haven’t been really hyped since s16, so I was really, really hoping for Zero to bring back for RvB love. And for now, without the Reds and Blues, it’s not what I was hoping for.

It’s something new. They’ve made that clear. It’s different. And I get why. I might not wholeheartedly agree, but I get why, and I love Torrian’s passion. Following him on Twitter was like: “holy shit, someone actually cares about RvB”. He has gone in a direction I’m not sure I’ll like, but he’s giving a shit, and ohmygod, I love that. I love that so much.

That is why I want to like the new season. Hell, that’s why it’s probably good. But even saying that, I can’t say I will like it. I don’t know what I’ll feel about the new characters. For now, all I feel is that it’s different. That can be good. That can also mean it’s just too different from what I personally want to see in an RvB season, and you know what, that’s valid. To miss the old characters – the ones you’ve been following for so long, the ones the show is named after – is valid, and it can be enough for someone to walk away. Torrian and the others have also made it clear that this is fair. That yes, this is different, and it won’t be for everyone.

TLDR: this season is different. That can be so good! That can also be worrisome. This season will probably bring in a lot of new fans. It may also be disappointing to fans who miss the old cast. That’s valid. Not liking the season is valid. Liking the season is valid. Disliking something does not equal hate. Never ever harass the content creators, ever. Be nice to each other. Be understanding. (I say, in a post for the fandom of the show that is literally about assholes hating each other. Until they don’t. Somewhat.)

As for me… *wince*. As I mentioned at some point in this way too long post; my passion has slowly been dying. If I completely leave after this season, it won’t just be a reaction to Zero. Did I have my hopes up? Yes. Am I somewhat disappointed? Yes. Will I give the new season a shot and be open to what it brings? Yes, absolutely. But as you clearly state – I’m a Grif and Grimmons writer. My passion lives on those moments in the show where these characters interact and shine. And to not get those moments, that will be a blow for my passion. I’ll update the best I can, I’ll try to stay passionate, but gods I miss Grif. I miss Simmons. And that’s okay.

Oh, that’s definitely gotta be The Messages That Never Sent. I dunno, I just love time travel fics and history, and especially dicking around in both of those genres, so that fic was just so much fun to write, haha. Also, for something that’s pretty angsty all things considered, the fact that my friend who only reads fluff and crack fics (@supergal128) not only read it without me telling her I posted it, but that she actually loved it, is like my greatest achievement so far, lmao.

Oh, hm, perhaps, A Memory of Lips Pressed Against Mine? I’ve been a fan of Kimi no Na Wa ever since I first saw it, however long ago that was, and my friend and I (the one mentioned above) always joke around about making grimmons AU's for movies that we watch. So when someone mentioned making an au for it on this Instagram group chat that I’m in, I guess I kinda just latched on as an excuse to go ahead and make a fic for it? It took a lot of research/reading/and figuring out how to translate things into the two different cultures/locations, plus I remember just writing it straight for three days, haha, so it was a lot of work but I think it came out good!

Something always felt off about how Blake described him and his lack of care about innocent lives in the Black Trailer raised red flags from Day One. V3 only confirmed it. It is a very unhealthy ship and I will never support it.

Neutral, okay... umm... Neo has a great character design, cool powers, and I think she has a lot of potential right now. IDK what the direction with her to be, but I am legit excited to see where they take her with Roman gone and her going after RUby and maybe still Cinder. I still find her overhyped, but hey she has a purpose now.

I - Has Tumblr caused you to stop liking any fandoms, if so, which and why?

Mmm... yes and no? If I turn away from a fandom due to Tumblr, it’s usually only temporary. I only drop out when I don’t want anything to dow ith the canon anymore. The only one that I can think fo that I want to be distant from si the Steven Universe fandom due to that incident several years ago about the one fanartist almost killing herself due to some assholes bullying her. While IDT the fandom as a whole is bad, it’s very hard to overlook something like that. I want to get back into SU at some point (maybe when Future is over) but chances are, you won’t see me get invested in fandom aside form GIF reblogs and just voicing my thoughts (which won’t be tagged). 

B - A pairing–platonic, romantic or sexual–that you initially didn’t consider, but someone changed your mind.

Most recent one is Bumblebee in RWBY. I was never against it, but I myself did not see evidence of it and didn't really see how it got so popular, as I do with most major ships. But I got why people liked it and didn't really care... but for a while, the ship wars between it and Black Sun got so ugly and especially the insults/queerbaiting accusations against Miles and Kerry disgusted me so much that I didn’t want anything to do with it. I wouldn’t say that ‘someone’ changed my mind, but after reading more of people’s feelings about the ship and why they enjoy it and re-examning after V6 and this volume... I like it now. I better understand why it means so much to people, especially those in the LGBT+ community. I also had one friend who loves the ship but understood why I wanted nothing to do with it and she would talk to me about why she did and get me to see another perspective. Having someone who I could just talk to as a friend helped calm me down and think my opinion over. That and how V6 went made me become a fan. Not as much as others, I’d say I’m neutral at most, but I do enjoy it and support it.

I’ve posted a few jokes before, but I don’t really remember most of them. I need to do more.

R - Which friendship/platonic relationship is your favorite in fandom?

Ho boy... picking just one is haaaaard. But since I have RWBY on the brain... probably Ruby and Penny. It’s just cute and Ruby is someone who actually treats Penny as a person. Probably the first outside Pietro. I love their friendship and how Ruby has helped Penny feel accepted and better understand emotions. SO wholesome~

Some thoughts about S16

I generally did not like this season. Not to say there weren’t good parts, and even some good plots (or plot potentials), but over all I just did not like it. Now, part of that is probably due to the fact that I’m just not a fan of the whole time travel thing, but it just seemed like RT was just... trying too hard or something? I dunno, but I know I wasn’t a fan. But there are a few things I like/thought could make interesting stories/character development depending on how they deal with the paradox.

Things that could make interesting character development/stories.

1. Washington. Oh I have so many feels about Washington. Obvious storyline is I want to know how he’s recovering, both physically and mentally. But on top of that I want to know how he’s dealing with it mentally. We’ve seen Wash in so many roles already (bad guy, unwitting bad guy, good guy, leader, follower, newbie, etc.), so I’m interested to see where he goes now. Part of me really wants him to become a ‘bad guy’ again; in a way where he isn’t really a bad guy, just not necessarily on the same side as the bgc and Carolina. Maybe have him and Locus go off and be buds, idk? He’s been betrayed so many times, and now he thought he finally found a group of people that wouldn’t betray him, and then along comes Carolina screwing that up. And despite the fact that Carolina told him she kept it to herself, he felt betrayed by what she had kept from him, so why would he believe her when she tells him she kept it to herself? And in his haze of betrayal why would he believe the reds and blues? And to make the betrayal worse, they spent basically the entire previous season becoming closer. And now this? Man that’s gotta hurt.

2. Carolina. I have many feels about Carolina, too. Carolina is hard on herself. beats herself up over every little thing she views as a mistake or something that could tear apart her team. This is a trait I understand, which is exactly why I’m curious to see what happens with her. Carolina cares for Wash (be it platonic, romantic, unsure, whatever. She cares) and I’m sure Carolina thought she was doing something good by not telling Wash how bad he was (she says as much in episode 13. I mean, listen to her voice and tell me she isn’t struggling to keep from breaking), she only wanted to protect him. Wash had been helping her learn how to atone for her past; had shown her that she could start over, but that she didn’t have to leave everything from her old life behind (S15, ep. 10.) And now, with his reaction, she has failed and her team is one person short. All because of a decision she made. She’s not going to take that lightly.

3. The entire Tucker/Sister thing. I’m going to start this off by saying that I don’t ship them, although my opinions on ships in this fandom have changed since I started watching (I’m looking at you Tuckington, Washlina, and Grimmons), and my opinions on Sister have changed, I just don’t ship them currently, especially not after this season. However, I would love to see them develop a great friendship. Given what we found out about Tucker’s insecurities and Kaikaina’s past insecurities, and the fact that she still has issues with them on occasion, I think a deep friendship between them would be absolutely wonderful! Tucker telling her stories about things Grif has done during their adventures, and Kai retaliating by telling stories of him as a kid, and it eventually growing deeper and Kai is helping Tucker with his insecurities, and Tucker is helping Kai out with some hand-to-hand techniques because ‘well, with us you never know what weird stuff we may get into, so it’s good to know and to keep improving.’ There are just so many potentials here. 

4. Grif and Simmons. I don’t care if you ship them or not, but I am loving this new supportive friendship thing going on the past couple of seasons. Also, I’m really liking this whole thing about Grif isn’t always lazy, he just needs the proper thing to motivate him. Basically, just more character development both individual and between them would be great.

Random things throughout the season that I liked in no particular order.

1.(ep. 15.) Past Wash talking to future Carolina. No big reason for this other than the fact that loopy Wash was hilarious, even if the reason he was loopy was bad. (And more specifically on this, Wash’s ‘byyyeeee’ when he’s walking away.)

2.(ep. 14.) Kai confronting Tucker about his insecurities and Tucker apologizing. This scene was wonderful and it absolutely made my heart hurt. I love Tucker and like to think he’s pretty close to perfect (especially after his growth during the Chorus Trilogy), but he really isn’t; he has flaws. I love that Kai built up the courage to call him out on his actions, but was willing to forgive him when he sincerely apologized. 

3. (ep. 8.) Basically the entire first 2 1/2 minutes of episode 8. Wash and his cat, Wash being competitive, Carolina telling Wash that Loki was his spirit animal (and hearing the smile in her voice.) 

4. (ep. 2.) Basically the first part of this episode, too, where Grif wants nothing to do with anything that could take them on an adventure, thus taking them on an adventure.

5. (ep. 10.) The entire part where Caboose is explaining what he’s been up to. Protect that boy, he’s precious.

6. Grif’s “That must’ve really... cut you to the bone!” Followed by, “swordswordsword.” As he zoomed off. I had to pause it because I was laughing so hard and barely managing to wheeze out, “HE STILL HAS THE SPEED UNIT, YESSSSS!” While sitting alone in my bed. (On the other side of this, though, why did he not do anything to comfort his sister. I need relationship development here.)

So yeah. Here’s my long ramblings about season 16 that I just needed to write down. Props if you even read past my Wash paragraph.

so i’m not Always critical of media, sometimes i just sit and watch it and no thoughts go through my head and that’s how i initially felt after that last qvsa vid but then i gave it a couple hours and started having Feelings

so. to get the good parts out of the way, i actually did kinda like the deep grimmons moment with them talking abt the modern reality of connection n whatever, it was giving me Everything Everywhere All At Once vibes which is a film that Really resonates with me & hearing my fave blorbos say something that sounds like it could’ve come from the script of it hit me a little

but!

the ending upset me a bit bc it made it obvious that that little moment was all just the setup for a bit that was directly aimed against the fanbase. initially i thought it might’ve been aimed at the older side of the fanbase getting antsy about the fact that rt is developing a ‘woke agenda’ (whatever that means) but then i realised it was most likely aimed at us (younger audience) and again most likely aimed at the characterisation criticisms which r pretty rampant lately (as they should tbh, i mean what are they even doing to simmons character arc at this point) and idk it kinda sucked that the first Really heartfelt grimmons interaction in forever was just so that the writers could take the piss out of fans who are genuinely concerned abt the characters

i mentioned it on my instagram but there’s a huge difference between people whining bc their fave obscure background character didn’t get more screentime (see: me in regards to gene) vs people raising questions abt the mishandling of character arcs (see: me in regards to simmons) (i am both sides of the coin but at least i’m self aware)

i get that rt is primarily a comedy but the levels of character assassination going on with tucker in s16/17 is borderline comparable to thomas astruc ruining chloe from mlb (although his came from a place of immaturity bc he didn’t like his own character but i digress)

i suppose the point of this is that it was frustrating having rt go LOOK AT THESE LOSERS WHO THINK THEY KNOW OUR OWN CHARACTERS BETTER THAN WE DO 🫵🫵🫵🫵🫵 while simultaneously mishandling all their characters in the most ridiculous ways
