Girl with a pearl earring - An oil painting by Dutch Golden Age painter Johannes Vermeer, dated c. 1665. The painting is a tronie, the Dutch 17th-century description of a ‘head’ that was not meant to be a portrait. It depicts a European girl wearing an exotic dress, an oriental turban, and what was thought to be a very large pearl as an earring. In 2014, Dutch astrophysicist Vincent Icke raised doubts about the material of the earring and argued that it looks more like polished tin than pearl on the grounds of the specular reflection, the pear shape and the large size of the earring.

Spin Off Scenes & Ficlets!

Work Is Published Wednesday!

(Just under the wire... I am SUPER busy with the MD Ren Faire coming up, but I wanted to get this series published before then. )

These various ficlets and short scenes fit within my canon timeline, and mostly feature various Original Characters from the Dregs and the crew of The Wraith. It started with a Queer ficlet challenge here on Tumblr, and became a fun way for me to explore little snippets of my OC’s lives, as well as practice writing succinctly! For all the little introductions, side story lines, and snippets of my Grishaverse OC's lives, check back to this series in the future.

There's some smutty ficlets with Kalu and Senn, some wholesome meetings between Zurye and the Novikovs and then Seile and Meril. We see Cory discover Cob at Fifth Harbor. And Mikhal make Nico feel better after the black eye that Ryo gave the blond bouncer.

When at last he began to add colors on top of the false colors, I saw what he meant. He painted a light blue over the girl’s skirt, and it became a blue through which bits of black could be seen, darker in the shadow of the table, lighter closer to the window. To the wall areas he added yellow ocher, through which some of the grey showed. It became a bright but not a white wall. When the light shone on the wall, I discovered, it was not white, but many colors. The pitcher and basin were the most complicated they became yellow, and brown, and green, and blue. They reflected the pattern of the rug, the girl’s bodice, the blue cloth draped over the chair everything but their true silver color. And yet they looked as they should, like a pitcher and a basin. After that I could not stop looking at things.

Als Mona 9 is, sterft haar moeder, die niet heel erg liefdevol was. Al snel krijgen Mona en haar broertje een stiefmoeder en een halfzusje. Als Mona 24 is begint ze haar eerste echte baan en een relatie. Als Mona 34 is, en haar vader ernstig ziek, begint ze te beseffen dat ze zich al haar hele leven in bochten wringt uit angst om mensen kwijt te raken.

'Ik heb Charlie nog even gezien, vanmorgen.' 'Hmm,' zegt Louis, die alle concentratie weer op zijn bord lijkt te richten. 'Zij zei op een gegeven moment dat ze een hekel heeft aan de term "disfunctionele families". Omdat precies dat type gezinnen volgens haar net buitengewoon functioneel is. Niet gericht op mensen die zich individueel mogen ontplooien en goed voelen, maar op een systeem dat in stand moet worden gehouden, een systeem waarin iedereen zijn rol vervult, ook als dat ten koste van hem- of haarzelf gaat.' 'Tja,' zegt Louis met zijn mond vol. 'Interessant om over door te denken, niet?' 'Goh. Naar mijn smaak heeft Charlie iets te veel zelfhulpboeken gelezen. Wat voor vers kruid zit er nu in die saus?' Hij wijst met zijn vork op een groenig puntje. 'Basilicum, zoals altijd.'

Aan het begin van het derde deel begon ik me een beetje te ergeren aan Mona's deurmat-houding. Gelukkig kwam daar toen eindelijk verandering in. De titel leek me eerst vooral een oproep tot mededogen voor de menselijke toestand -- een beetje zoals in Vroman's Mens . Maar later besefte ik dat het ook kan worden gezien als een nogal dwingende en egoïstische oproep om beschikbaar te zijn voor een ander om lief te hebben. Want daar gaat het boek uiteindelijk over, denk ik; dat wij bestaan in de context van anderen, onlosmakelijk, maar niet alleen ten behoeve van die anderen.

Using this as an opportunity to give some attention to a snippet from Drie Is Eeen Feestje, a spin off from my Kanej Wensen series with three OC Dregs getting to have a fun night together.

Mikhal & Meril are having a chat with Nico, to see if he's interested...

Mikhal started off directly. “So, Nico… Meril and I might have noticed that you seem to glance longingly at us every time you get the chance.”

Nico’s Kerch complexion lent itself to going especially florid. His eyes, which Meril had noted were brown with hazel flecks at the center, were currently wildly darting between them. “I-I… um… Yeah?”

Oh, this is better than I’d imagined. Something about a man as tall and muscled and aggressive as Nico, reduced to stammering and blushing, thrilled her fiercely. Meril grew braver as the heated feeling grew. “Is that a question, Nico? Because we all know the answer.”

“No… I mean… Y-yes, I’ve been looking, and no, it isn’t a question.” 

She’d seen him be intimidated by Anika. This was different. He was completely flustered, his fingers clenching and unclenching around his whiskey glass. There was scarring over his knuckles from fights, similar to Mikhal’s. She couldn’t help but compare their hands. A visual of the two men with their hands all over each other swept through her mind. It was quickly followed by another; their hands on her, dedicated to her pleasure. Bloody hell. Mikhal seemed enthused at the prospect of getting Nico upstairs, and she was getting more aroused by the minute. Now to see if Nico was on board. Ghezen’s fortune favors the bold…
