MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE: An Insufferably Queer Film Review

I rewatched MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE (1987) for the first time since it came out last night and WOW I have some thots about this thing. We enjoyed roasting the living shit out of it but there's a few gold nuggets in there despite the brutal budget cuts that impacted the plot and what not.

OK so … the film doesn't bother to set up any real motivations for the characters, and He-Man (an incredible looking Dolph Lundgren rrrowrrrr) has almost no dialogue which is such a fucking waste. But this complete lack of narrative framework means we can apply OUR OWN explanations to events.

From the very beginning Skeletor has this obsession with He-Man, which will simmer and then culminate in a final showdown. But before we get to that hot mess, we have to wade through the middle of the film.

He gets as much screen time as He-Man.

Meet the utterly repulsive dwarf scientist Gwildor played by Billy Barty, a rinse-and-repeat of his performance as an utterly repulsive magic troll in Legend (1986). This dwarf is the film's Jar Jar. His face is like a deep dish pizza after an acid attack. His real mouth is visible behind the immobile thick prosthetics and it makes for some truly disturbing close-up dialogue shots. Please, pan away from Pizza the Hutt and give us another shot of Lundgren's pecs please I am begging you, DP

We find ourselves in Gwildor's hobbit hole, and he's a magical inventor. So he has this cylindrical object, it's not clear whether it's a weapon or a teleporter but I'm calling it the Butt-Reamer 9000. Inexplicably, there are two of these things and Skeletor has the other one, and wants to collect both of them. So Skeletor has an excuse to go hunting He-Man as he's hunting his missing McGuffin, er I mean sex toy.

Features rotating ticklers, a big improvement over the Butt Reamer 8000.

The thing about the Butt-Reamer 9000 is its magical power to make even this promising setup devolve into a grind as it whisks the Eternians into the magical, enchanting world of a 1987 New Jersey parking lot. WHO WROTE THIS?

The entire middle of the movie is pretty much hot garbage and involves police detectives, arson, vandalism, high school prom, and other dumb bullshit. Aside from the distractingly naked He-Man, the good guys are an utter bore and include some Eternians, some regular Earth humans and their quotidian concerns which really brings down the fun of the movie. (No, baby Courtney Cox, I don't care about your imminent breakup with your mediocre boyfriend!)

The film owes a second mortgage to Star Wars and steals a lot of ideas from it, from bad guys in shiny black stormtrooper helmets, to heroes shooting blue lasers, baddies shooting red.

Let's turn from this depressing state of affairs and focus back on our cherished villain blorbos.

Evil-Lyn is beautiful, evil, a cold bitch queen. Gurl you can do so much better than sticking with this loser Skeletor.

Dump! Him! He's gay anyway!

Skeletor is a shit lazy boss of Greyskull and makes Evil-Lyn run the goddamn place in general. He literally shoots the messenger at one point. Great for morale, there, Skel buddy.

Look closer. Fierce!

There's a number of budget rate henchmen on the job, including Karg, who used a whole can of aqua net this morning and is running around in a white fur capelet with a massive bouffant. He is just doing his best okay, really it's hard to look fabulous around these other bitches.

Blade definitely deserved more screen time

Also, Blade, who had a slutty costume of silvery scale maille or something, and was a bit like a sci-fi bondage Riff Raff / space Judas Priest. Best side character costume.

So, there we have it, the queer coded villain roster of the film.

Finally, thank Satan, we return to Castle Greyskull, though it's more like beige-and-brown-skull. But aside from the questionable use of faux marble finishes, this is a quality villain lair with hard points installed directly in the floor of the living room, convenient death pits, and an excellent throne setup that I'm pretty sure they recycled for The Fifth Element.

He-Man is captured alive and brought before Skeletor. Blade does the honors with a 15 foot glowing red bullwhip to He-Man's naked and oiled back, much to the delight of dyed-in-the-wool sadist Evil-Lyn.

Movie is getting good now. Was the side quest to Jersey really necessary?

Skeletor, though, watches this action from the throne and has a lot of interesting responses. We had to conclude that Skeletor is a big old bottom but won't admit it. As a dom he is utterly ineffective. He's trying to make He-man kneel and all this shit but He-Man is not submissive at all. Skeletor is … lol. He really just wants to smell He-Man's dick.

The depths (heh) of his bottom nature will become apparent shortly. But first, a costume change.

Skeletor's glow up --- i'm every woman.

Honey we know you're just trying to impress He-man.

Werk tho.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Hole

The gigantic sky-sphincter directly behind the throne has slid open wide… "Begin! The Goatse Ritual! Join me, He-Man, as I become LORD OF THE GAPE" But He-Man's phallic symbol shines bright in defiance. In the end, Skeletor is vanquished symbolically by his own nature and instead of his hole swallowing He-Man, a gaping hole swallows Skeletor instead.

They don't really explain what happened to Evil-Lyn after He-Man's inevitable victory in final man to man combat but she was too smart to get caught sleeping in there and must have survived. What a hot evil competent BABE. After the events of the film end, I vote that Evil-Lyn seduces Teela (the good guy solder lady) and has a hot toxic lesbian affair with her.

Evil-Lyn serves cunt in hell 4 evar

Teela should be smart enough to know that the true identity of He-Man would be a crucial secret since he's Eternia and Greyskull's sole figure of defense when shit hits the fan. And she knows that the villains see her more as a 'cheerleader' or accessory to He-Man so, if they told everyone who was close to Prince Adam, that would have been a fucking liability!

Also? Also?! You want to pull this shit when the King and Queen are mourning the abrupt loss of their only son (and major champion but, of course, these tears were more for their son)?! Bitch, this ain't about you! Fuck yo' hurt feelings -- MY SON IS DEAD!

Masters of the Universe Revelations part 2 - contains some spoilers

Sooooooooo Spoilers thoughts.....

I am a glutton for pain, as my lower back is telling me for putting out nearly 4000 pounds of potatoes and onions where I work. So these are my initial thoughts before my muscle relaxer takes hold.

I like the reconciliation between father and son, mother and daughter.  

Didn’t like like that the Sorceress had to die

Teela in part 2 was more likable than she was in part 1

LOVED seeing the sword wielding villain from the movie... Gods what was his name, it is right on the tip of my tongue too!... glad they didn't add Gwildor or make him a noticeable character cause I  didn't see him if he was.

I am disappointed that Savage He-Man or as I call him Hulk He-Man didn’t say "Adam SMASH!"

How did Skeletor revert back? Is there a limit on how far you can be from Castle Greyskull?

Sooooooooo Motherboard assimilated Skeletor like the Borg assimilate races in Star Trek *face palm* COME ON!

Hordak hinted, nice! Bring on the one who is MotU's equivalent of Darkseid! Make him as ruthless as he is in the comics and not a bitch!

If introduce Hordak, they may bring in Despara. I am eager to see if they bring her into the fold as her and then She-Ra.

Snake seen in some scenes dealing with the creation of Zoar. Is this a hint of the Snake-men if there is a continuation?

I definitely enjoyed part 2, but there is still on major gaping plot hole. Sense of time. I plan to rewatch it either turkey-day or either one of my days off Friday or Saturday when I am rested and not hurting. 

Well my med is kicking in. Time to switch over to Godzilla or Guyver before I forget. Most likely Godzilla. He will ALWAYS rank number 1 in all the fandoms I’ve like growing up.

i saw this on Instagram. some called me a fake fan when i explain to my generation about Teela's destiny of being the next guardian of greyskull. the next sorceress. well, well, well... looks like i’m right. and do you know why? because i knew the lore. and this was mentioned in the 80s and 2003 series. if these so called “fans” knew this and weren’t blind by nostalgia and think that   “oh, hey. this is about teela finding out about her mother and her destiny” instead of “BAWAAAHHH! THIS IS THE TEELA SHOOOWWWWW!!!  

 They would would know the truth behind the real story.

Just started Critical Role

Watching/listening to Vox Machina first while I’m working, so I’ll be making this a thread of my general thoughts of each episode. I’ve currently watched through episode 13, so wish me luck on catching up to ~5 years worth of videos. (note, haven’t really had a chance so far to look at anything like comments/descriptions/subtitles, so names may be misspelled.)

General thoughts so far in no particular order:

Pretty good start. You can tell everyone’s having fun. I can certainly see how Matt Mercer got his reputation as a good DM.

“Now you’re speaking Dwarvish.” Alright, I’m sold. Let’s fucking go.

“I have an intelligence of 6, I know what I’m doing.” Yep, sounds about right.

Scanlan just fucking going into the mansion like that is honestly my worst nightmare as a new DM, and you can tell Matt had no fucking plan on anyone making it in there, at least at that point. Handled it pretty well though. Kudos.

Scanlan: “... and a fighter a distant third.” Also Scanlan: Kills a naga chimera thing in an extremely painful way with lightning.

Really liked Kla’Rota. Shame. On the other hand, I kept wondering that if he was an outcast, what guarantee did Vox Machina have that the other Illithid would keep his word?

Keyleth’s little breakdown hurt on the inside and felt really natural. Honestly, I’d be on the same thought process as her, but I wouldn’t have handled it as well as her.

Said “Son of a bitch” out loud when Grog got kidnapped.

Said “Son of a bitch” internally when K’Varn was revealed to be a beholder.

Said “Son of a bitch” internally when Kla’Rota turned on everyone.

Said “Son of a bitch” out loud when Lord and Lady Briarwood got mentioned.

We’re gonna see Percy go ballistic, aren’t we? (Pun entirely intended.)

Had mad Lord of the Ring vibes when they discussed how to deal with the Horn of Orcus.

Honestly, Kima and Grog are a strangely cute ship I didn’t know I wanted now that it’s not being played for laughs.

The words “Wizard Tracksuit” is not a phrase I knew I wanted to hear. Now it is.

I love the people at Greyskull! Matt could do a full session by himself just having all these people interact, and I’d be so happy! But alas, he’s only human, and that would detract from the main cast.

Did not know much about Duergar. Or that they could grow in size. I know better now.

I would very much like to hear more about the good, the rad, and the nubbly in the future, even if it’s only in passing.

I’m honestly really enjoying the series so far. Looking forward to the rest of it!

I had a lot of fun with this one... SO MANY COLOURS! I tried to keep the shading minimal like the show. It could still use a tweak, but I didn’t want to overwork it. Overall very proud of how this came out :D

I'm going to use a bonus action to look over my shoulder and see everyone that I know. I'm going to see my sister and her husband. I'm going to see the woman that I love. I'm going to see Grog. I'm going to see Arkhan. I'm going to see my friend Scanlan.

In the darkness of her cloak, you see a brief light, and it's brighter for you. As you walk forward, you see reaching from the light the dark hair, the fair skin, and the wide smile of your mother, Elaina. As she greets you, she says, “I'm so proud.”

Breath of the Wild Link is probably my favorite of all depictions.

I’ve always imagined Link as basically just being a scion and embodiment of a sun god’s wrath on the face of the planet. Which is why his motif is storms and wind and revolutions and howling violence.

The Master Sword is just a tool and a courtesy to minimize acceptable losses and casualties, because the boy is feral and will otherwise behave like a super powered primate just to destroy whatever’s in his way to the path of least resistance to get you.

You know. Like a storm.

Think about it. What happens when Link steps in to wreck your shit? A lot of noise kicks up, shit flies around, stuff that isn’t strapped down gets picked up and thrown everywhere, you get stabbed and crushed and smashed and hit with your own stuff by all the random shit he’s picked up as he’s progressed through your neighborhood.

And what happens when a hurricane blows through?

Same thing.

Link is a little fey personification of a tornado. He doesn’t need the Master Sword in order to do what he do. Zelda just makes sure her favorite pet disaster is loaded with surgical knives made of, for all intents and purposes, vorpal.

He’s like if Florida Man entered Castle Greyskull up in this bitch.

Chapter 4: Reacquainted

Catra didn’t know when she fell asleep, but when she woke up the crying had stopped. The silence wasn’t any more comforting, but now she could think straight for a moment. Adora’s last words before storming off still echoed in her mind ‘it was you fault’. What did she see in Weaver’s memories? Weaver was an awful bitch, but trying to kill her star pupils was just stupid. If she was going to help Adora she needed answers.

Accessing the reports on Greyskull’s missions was easier than Catra had expected. From images to audio transcripts to data on Greyskull’s power consumption. Everything was neatly cataloged for future reference. Catra took a moment to look at their pictures. Adora and Adam Smith. She had seen their faces on the news so many times and yet she couldn’t recognize Adora until she was standing right in front of her.

She still remembered the day Greyskull fell. She mourned the loss of a jaeger pilot like all her Shatterdome did that day, like people all around Etheria did that day. When Catra lost her family she had been too young to remember their faces. She couldn’t imagine how Adora must have felt like after losing Adam. No, she couldn’t just sit around thinking about how awful things were. She had to make Shadow Weaver pay for what she’s done.

Just finished She-Ra, and a few things:

1.) OF FUCKING COURSE THEY DESTROYED CATRAS ARMY WITH A RAINBOW. GAY POWER BITCHES.

2.) the princesses are still unaware that Entrapta lives

3.) i guess for now, I have to give up on a Catra/Adora forgiveness/ reunion scene. Catra really has become the enemy and completely turned her back on Adora...which hurts so much.

I love this show and what it stands for and what it gives to a much younger audience. I am so happy to see expressions, emotions, and wlw/mlm undertones. This is so refreshing to see especially knowing that younger kids will see this and think “well Bow cries and expresses joy so that means I can do that too!” or “friendships can be very intense but not at all romantic.” This is a great show and i’m excited to see season 2.
