seria um voo de dezessete horas, confortável na primeira classe mas ainda sim, cansativo . enquanto o carro virava na rua de sierra, ele desligou o telefone , dizendo adeus a jane e que a veria no próximo dia. ao chegar na frente da casa esverdeada , com o jardim bem cuidado , ele pediu que o motorista abrisse o porta malas, e logo saiu para ajudar a outra, sua ' namorada ' , e definitivamente algo diferente do que costumava ser , com as bagagens. deu um aceno para a mãe da mais nova que esperava na porta, e prometeu com um riso que iria cuidar dela , para a própria apenas poupou um curvar de lábios gentil , e suave, pegando na sua mão para beijar a parte de trás com carinho, antes de se mexer para guardar tudo que levariam junto com suas coisas.

uma vez no carro, ele teve de perguntar : ❛ ⎯⎯⎯⎯  nervosa ?  ⎯⎯⎯⎯ ❜  , e entenderia se estivesse. não só porque ainda estavam para conversar sobre o que realmente eram e poucas chances se apresentariam durante aquela semana, mas porque conhecer jane seria - como ele já tinha dito - a prova de fogo. a metade de sua alma o conhecia com a certeza de quem já tinha lido um livro milhares de vezes , e sabia cada detalhe. iria poder dizer se parecesse que não estava apaixonado por sierra, se dessem a impressão que não sentiam nada um pelo outro , mas não era bem esta a verdade, certo ? não mais.

imediatamente ao chegar no aeroporto, começaram os tratamentos especiais ; sabendo que um sherman estariam viajando com eles, a companhia aérea tomou conta das malas, e os guiou até o lounge vip , com taças de champanhe nas mãos, e por ali ficaram certo tempo até que foram chamados ao embarque. entrando na cabine somente dos dois, jacob agradeceu a aeromoça pelo cuidado com as coisas que sierra insistia em levar na mão, e logo se recostou no assento de couro. ❛ ⎯⎯⎯⎯  a revista não te voa por ai na primeira classe ?  ⎯⎯⎯⎯ ❜  sendo honesto, ele não imaginou que tinham aquele luxo só por trabalhar na dantey & west , sempre fazia o upgrade de seus voos por conta do próprio bolso, mas era um pouco divertido brincar com ela.

no meio da noite , ele acabou por - mais uma vez - , a colocar em seu colo , e depois de alguns beijos castos , dormiram . pela primeira vez em meses, pode fechar os olhos tranquilo, sabendo que ela estava em seus braços. para alguém que sempre teve problemas dormindo, era uma benção.

então, chegaram a austrália pouco antes do almoço, e depois de desembarcar, andaram um pouco com o carrinho guardando suas coisas, e procurando jane e ben , o casal do momento , que viriam os buscar. ele passou um braço pelos ombros da colega de trabalho, e sussurrava algo em seu ouvido de pouca importância quando finalmente ouviu alguém gritando em uma voz familiar : ' hansel ! '  virou-se rapidamente , sabendo bem de um de seus apelidos, embora houvessem muitos passados entre os dois ao longo dos anos . o editor largou tudo e devolveu em sua própria voz alta e animada : ❛ ⎯⎯⎯⎯ gretel ? ⎯⎯⎯⎯ ❜ e então estavam correndo para se abraçar, deixando seus pares para os seguir. jane pulou em si , e jacob a tirou do chão girando no mesmo lugar algumas vezes. Wow, I had never even heard of her. But now I will definitively open an eye to see if I can spot her books around

I am always bothered by how limited people tend to be when doing fairytale adaptations. Because even when you wish to stay faithful to the text, there is so many opportunities opened for you since the text is literaly designed to be filled with gaps for other people's imaginations to fill... Just take for example the witch from Hansel and Gretel. She is given a set of specific traits, everybody knows the witch stereotypes, she is a stock character... and yet just looking at all the various illustrations made about her throughout the centuries, you see how different she can look depending on the artist.

Background: Born and raised in a patch of German woodland, Greer has always been the definition of a middle child. She enjoyed the freedom to explore the woods surrounding her home, even with her mother constantly reminding her of the dangers surrounding them. But Greer never quite cared to hear them. The Gingerbread Witch had been dead for years there was no more danger. As Greer grew up, she became interested in topics that couldn't be taught in her school, prompting Gretel to look into other schools. After much back and forth, Greer starts attending Auradon Prep on a scholarship. There, she wastes no time exploring every place she can and becoming a part of every social circle, even if it's just on a surface level. She finds a few close friends and eventually someone she loves in the form of a new prince. But Greer will soon realize that being carefree and unafraid isn't always the best idea.

Week #1

Introduction

In class I had explored the topics of Belonging, Movies, and the Uncanny Valley. After doing the mind mapping exercise, I decided that for this week I will explore the idea of belonging and nostalgia in unsettling media. I don't have a particular destination in mind with my research, so for this week I want to expand upon those ideas and just go wherever the internet took me.

With the sequel coming out, I thought it would be interesting to rewatch the original which I haven’t seen since I was a kid and then watch the new one in theaters. After watching them both as well as looking into the reception of the new movie, I realized how Tim Burton occupies a very niche place in Hollywood. And I think it makes sense to research him because I guess I am interested in exploring things that are unsettling, but I am not a fan of typical horror.

What I found out was that Burton got his start as a Disney Animator but slowly transitioned towards things that were more “spooky”. Here’s a list of all of the spooky movies he’s done: Beetlejuice, Sleepy Hollow, Frankenweenie, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, Hansel and Gretel, Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and more. Looking into his background, Burton grew up in Burbank, California. Burton said that growing up there left him deprived of seasonal change, and the spooky holiday was a time he could experience that without actually having it.

Now knowing his background, it makes sense that most of his work is about a young outsider “suspicious of adulthood's normalcy”. I loved learning about his work. Going into this I actually was not a fan of Beetlejuice. I just thought it was too creepy as a child, but being able to look back as an adult now I was able to relate a lot more to the themes behind the films. While researching him, I also checked out some work from an art exhibit of his. I think the aesthetic in Beetlejuice is not for me, but I enjoy some of his other work a lot more.

I Saw The TV Glow (2024)

Another movie my research made me think about was I Saw The TV Glow.

The director Jane Schoenbrun uses nostalgia and horror tropes to portray the feeling of queerness but that can be expanded to feeling alienated in general as a kid. In the movie, the main character Owen is introduced to this one show that he becomes obsessed with called the Pink Opaque. We see many clips from it throughout the movie. There’s a really powerful scene near the end of the movie where many years later he rewatched an episode from the show and it looks nothing like it used to be. It was far more childish. I think the movie really captures the feeling of rewatching something and your perception of that media being completely different from what you had in your mind. Sometimes a memory of something from your childhood persists far past the actual thing itself if that makes sense.

Going down a bit of a nostalgia trip, I remembered some videos on YouTube that went viral when I was younger. I remembered how my brother liked to show me things like Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared and Salad Fingers because he always liked to freak me out and scare me.

These series were huge for my generation and they tap into this like collective cultural fear of unsettling dangerous things that are hiding “beneath the facade of normality”. It goes into the idea of the uncanny valley, the phenomenon whereby nonhuman objects or creatures’ resemblance to a human creates a feeling of unease and fear. You definitely feel this when watching these videos, where the characters depicted are seemingly harmless because they’re 2D or animated and resembling kids toys that should be safe. But then it devolves into a more sinister world and nature. While these examples don’t go super deep into a meaning or explanation, I thought it was a good starting point due to their huge popularity.

Reflections

I think I explored some really interesting ideas pertaining to the topics that I started with. I like how this eventually led to where I am now. I also like how a lot of the media I watched and researched centered around the idea of not belonging and the feeling of being alienated. Going forward I’m not sure if I want to continue down such a creepy path and I might explore the topic of belonging through a different lens.
