If you played Makopudding’s Gretel and Hansel games and thought the soundtrack was BANGER you can get the OST on bandcamp. The digital track is PWYW with a minimum of $1 so yeah go throw money at them if you want to support them.
Caution while googling:
Nothing comes up if you spell Grotesque Requords as is. Google will try to redirect you to Grotesque Records, which is an unrelated producer of horror/gore inspired music (with gorey album covers). If you want the actual Gretel and Hansel OST you need to type in “Grotesque Records Gretel and Hansel”, and you should be able to find it. Hopefully if enough people google the soundtrack Google will fix it one day…

randonauting with these aot characters
Tumblr media
warning: heads up that this is about some (mild i think?) creepy content, so if you’re not comfortable with it, please skip!
word count: 1,3k
a/n: i’m not encouraging you to download the app and of course this isn’t an ad, just thought it’d be a cool fic idea! (DO NOT DOWNLOAD THE APP)
before you read: you and your partner decide to download “randonautica”, an app that gives you randomised location coordinates based on the intention you set.
Eren is probably the one who originally told you about the app. He had been watching TikToks of people who’d previously used the app and thought it might be a cool little game. When you told him you’d actually downloaded the app and set the intention to “monster” he gave you a smirk and suggested that you go there together. What a better way to spend your weekend, right? You packed a few necessities, some lunch, water and flash lights, and headed to the coordinates you got. The place turned out to be extremely sinister and, at first, neither of you wanted to step out of the car, especially not in the dark of the night. You took some tiny steps towards an abandoned cabin that you could spot in the distance, when you heard a swift rustling in the trees. You and Eren took a good look at each other, then ran back inside the car and drove away as fast as possible. “Delete that stupid app, y/n… And disable your location NOW!”. (love me some “heroic” bf Eren!) (what a loser)
You and Armin go out there for strictly educational reasons, or that’s what you tell yourselves. Walking deeper into the clearing that was your coordinates, you don’t notice much, when, all of a sudden, you find a bone and ran back to the car as quickly as possible. When you’re far enough, you go through your photos and videos of the location again. “Hey Armin… Remember that bone we found?” “Don’t start, y/n, that was some crazy shit. We’re not going back there, whatever you say!” “No, listen… There’s barbecue stove in the back. See? I got a picture of it. Maybe it was an animal bone? From someone’s lunch?” Armin inspected your face for a bit, and demanded that he saw the photo you took. “That might be true, y/n… But we shouldn’t risk it.” He said as he took a good look at you. A few minutes later, you were back at the site, looking for more clues. You walked past a row of sycamore trees before finding yourselves in someone’s backyard. Turns out that it WAS a barbecue site. You’d probably copied the coordinates wrong, maybe a digit was missing? Armin was barely able to convince the old lady who lived there that you’d made a mistake. Good thing he’s got those “big blue eyes” and is “so polite to the elderly”, as the lady explained. As a truce, she packed you a few slices of her home-made oat and chocolate cake. “Y/n, should we eat the cake?” asked Armin as you walked the distance back to the car, holding onto the wrapped food. “Nah Armin, this kinda gives Hansel and Gretel. Let’s just leave it here”. You said, concealing the cake behind a bush.
Mikasa would be very interested when you tell her about the app and she insists that you go. “Set the intention to “vampires”, y/n. We might get a cult site!” she said with a straight face. It was so difficult to discern whether she was making a joke or if she was genuinely excited to try out the app. “Uhm, you do realise that this isn’t a game, right Mikasa?” You asked, just to make sure. “I know, it’s no game. It’s even better. We should probably buy gas masks before we plan our excursion” she explained. “What would we need the masks for?” you asked, honestly contemplating if suggesting randonautica to Mikasa was a good idea after all. “I don’t know, y/n, what if whoever is there watching us tries to gas us or something? Just saying, we should be prepared.” She said and went back to typing on her phone. After a few minutes of silence, you’d reconsidered and made your decision. “Listen, Mikasa, the more you speak of it, the more scared I become. I don’t wanna go anymore” you admitted shyly since you were the one to suggest it. “Too bad, y/n. I just received our coordinates and it’s not very far. Grab your boots, we’re leaving” she said blankly, while reaching for your toolbox from under the kitchen sink. “Why are you looking at me like that, y/n? You’re gonna love it, I promise!” she said with a wink. Who is this person?
Jean was also the person to tell you about randonautica, but when you, quite proudly too, announced that you’d downloaded the app and set the intention to “creepy”… You were into some serious trouble. You got a good scolding session, as Jean was extremely upset by your carelessness. “Have you not seen how the people who end up in these locations usually have to report back to the police cause some creepy dude starts stalking them?? How about that mother and son who had to leave their home for days before the creep lost their tracks? Don’t be so naive, y/n, that shit’s dangerous!”. He did apologise afterwards, as he was the one who made you listen to all those stories and treated them as a true crime podcast. “How about we book an escape room instead? Or a rage room? You should pick, y/n! Anything yo keep you away from that app”.
“I’ll call my cousin if we need help, she’s a police officer! She should be able to help us” Connie explained as he drove to the location you’d just received on the app. “Aren’t you afraid we might come across some creepy dude with a hammer?” you asked, your anxiety mixed with excitement peaking the closer you got to the location. “Need I remind you that I did bring our own hammer, y/n? Whatever creep we meet should know better than to mess with me!” He exclaimed proudly, giving you a side smirk. Connie’s phone buzzed, you’d reached your destination. As Connie parked the car, you got out and took a good look of your surroundings. The coordinates led to a spot under a bridge, which would be extremely bad lit, had you not convinced Connie to go during the day. “I don’t really like this place, Connie. I think we should go back” you announced, not really straying too far from the car. “Don’t worry, y/n you’ve got me and I’ve got the hammer. We should be more than fine!” You walked a few meters further, approaching the exact spot you’d received. “What did you set as our intention Connie?” you questioned as you spotted a tall figure in the distance. “Maniac, why?” He asked absent-mindedly as he kept looking for clues on the ground. “Cause I think we’ve company...” He jolted up and followed your gaze, reaching that figure. “Don’t scream, y/n, but run as fast as you can!” He said and pulled you away from the site and back to the car. "Better call your cousin now!" You half screamed as you drove away.
Listen to me, Hange is fucking insane. Ever since you two discovered randonautica, it was all they ever talked about. For your weekend date, you actually decided to go on your little horror adventure. “What should our intention be Hange?” you questioned as they started the car. “Hm… Let’s see… How about cake?” “Cake?” “Yes, y/n, cake. Imagine the possibilities!” They said and threw their hands in the air. You got the coordinates and they drove ahead to an area not so far from your shared apartment. As Hange pulled over, you noticed there were some logs scattered here and there but most of the area was desolate and covered by dry, yellow grass. “Promising, right, y/n?” Exclaimed Hange. “It’s just a bunch of logs, Hange, there won’t-” “LOOK OVER THERE!” they shouted, pointing at a rusty cool box that was a good thirty metes away from you. “Don’t you dare go near it Hange!” you grabbed onto their hood before they could go any closer to the cool bag. “Y/n, this is what we came here for! Let me go check it out!” they complained as loudly as possible, trying to escape your grip. “What if it’s a crime scene, Hange? Would you like to find some random person’s insides? We’re leaving this instant!” you dragged them away and back to the car, much to Hange’s resistance. “You know, y/n, that could’ve been a really cool finding...” They pouted, their final card on getting you to go back again. “No, Hange. Most likely, WE would be the really cool finding. That cool box might have been for our remains. Delete the app.” Reluctantly, they did.

this post is just me going on a long tangent for an aesthetic im nostalgic for and a bunch of examples of it so click keep reading at your own discretion cause long post ahead
so what im talking is this sort of mid 2000s to like around 2011 neo-victorian aesthetic that also utilized a sort of gothic-circus meets cabaret style. the essence of the 2000s is there even if its not initially visible from the surface because its important to this aesthetic. i think some motifs for this are typical gothic elements like graves and crosses but also things like stripes, butterflies, ragdolls, playing cards, checker patterns, hearts (both whole and broken), chess, circus imagery, roses and rabbits. aesthetics like emo, gothic lolita, circus, goth, mall goth and even steampunk to a small degree are kinda like the cousins to this.
some artists that i think visualized this are mizna wada,
Tumblr media
yoh
Tumblr media
and gekidan inu curry
Tumblr media
plus a whole bunch of others like hanamushi and dollcreep
i'd say the music genres associated with this style would be dark cabaret and baroque pop. the most popular examples would probably be panic! at the disco's first and third albums
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but you also have other acts like emilie autumn
Tumblr media
rasputina,
Tumblr media
the dresden dolls,
Tumblr media
and there were quite a few vocaloid song/mvs that also fit like dark wood circus, trick and treat and the riddle solver who can't solve riddles. plus i feel like a large amount of songs by kikou also match this sort of vibe
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
clothing wise i feel like thick stripes were really popular, especially as striped stockings. other things like victorian boots, fingerless gloves and corsets as well. i cant name just one specific clothing style but i def feel like gothic lolita and the neo victorian look really embodies this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
video games also were kinda influenced by this aesthetic but i dont think it was nearly as prominent. i think the path and alice: madness returns are probably the closest to what im talking abt
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but interestly enough i think the kind of games that utilized this style the most were flash point and click games like gretel & hansel
Tumblr media
and speaking of alice: madness returns it really does seem alice in wonderland and alice in wonderland inspired themes with a darker more gothic-y look became really popular (which think i also plays into the popularity of the neo victorian influence). this is why i think things associated with alice in wonderland like roses, rabbits and playing cards became such popular imagery with this aesthetic. i find it kinda funny when people say the 2010 version of alice in wonderland wasnt good because the color palette was "too dark/gloomy/whatever" cause it really was appealing to the aesthetics of the time which is why it did so well when it came out
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
for movies of this aesthetic i know tim burton is probably gonna be the most associated with this which is fair but i credit a lot of it to the costume designer for most of his movies, colleen atwood (who fittingly designed the costumes for 2010 alice in wonderland)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and even toy wise this aesthetic was visible with dolls like bleeding edge goth
Tumblr media
living dead dolls too (and once again the alice in wonderland theme is present)
Tumblr media
and while the style of pullip dolls is generally lighter they also produced a few dolls like this (*cough* alice in wonderland inspired yet agaain *cough*)
Tumblr media
and last but not least,,VAMPLETS I LOVE THEM SO MUCH; i wish the original vamplets site was still up but i digress.
Tumblr media
there are plenty of more examples like ruby gloom, black butler, the music video for fashion monster, trinity blood, shiki and monster high

BrotherRemember seems intriguing... (From the wip tag/ask game)
Thank you^^
I’ll admit, this story, at least the beginning is based on the Supernatural episode About a Boy.
okay so brother remember comes from the idea that Stan got cursed by a witch while he was living on the street. That witch was kinda like the one from Hansel and Gretel. She would take bum from the street and turn them into kids. Maybe she just does that do give them a second chance or just so that she can… have fun with them.
Stan catches on that he is in trouble and escapes her clutches but is still turn into a kid. She wanders around, trying to survive, until he gets caught by the police. The only thing he still had was his brother’s address and they escort him to Ford’s house.
When he arrives there he is greeted by a very scared, sleep deprived paranoid Stanford Pines that recognizes the young kid as his brother. He takes him in and asked what happened to him. Stan explains and wants to leave as soon as possible. He doesn’t want to leech off of his brother anymore then necessary.
Things happens, the middle isn’t really thought through, and long story short, they defeat Bill but in the process of doing so, Stan forgets that he is supposed to be a late twenty years old stuck as a young boy. He doesn’t remember his name, who he is and who Ford is.
Ford is heartbroken, but manages to not let panic take over him and decides to take care of the young boy. He gives him a new name, maybe just calling him Ley, and tells him that he is his uncle and that his father was Stanley Pines, his twin. He told him that his dad died and that’s why he lives with him.
Ford raises his amnesiac brother as his nephew.
Don’t know how long or if I’ll ever get to the bottom of this story, but i imagine that when Ley is in his teen years he gets flashes of his older life coming back to him and question his “uncle” and ask for the truth. While growing up, he would also get some nightmares from his past life. Ford is trying to be a good parent figure and makes sure, Ley doesn’t get the treatment him and Stan had while growing up.
So that’s basically what Brother Remember is about^^ hope that answers your question^^! Thanks for asking!

I’m considering... for my entirely indulgent Neverafter Hansel character, to have his Twice Upon A Time re-entry to the Neverafter through a differing version of his tale feature him entering a loop of Brother and Sister tales, rather than strictly Hansel and Gretel. it feels like it would be really interesting to like. have a character whose conflict is also in the way their story is about being part of a half, and a grim reminder of the fates of children left to wander defenceless.
Also I want to turn him part way into a goat.
and being able to go like ‘so now I think I might know where my sister is, but it’s chained to a rock at the bottom of a frozen river.” In my headcanon which I am making up because idk maybe they’ll really put out out a rulebook and I can play in a game or something sometime okay?! In my headcanon in the times of the Neverafter where the stories become twisted versions of themselves Gretel not only cooks the witch, after being tortured and starved for weeks she ends up devouring the witch as well. In *my* mind gaining a witch’s powers and becoming a small fragment of Baba Yaga who... look somehow in my imagination versions of the witch are like pale reflections of memories *of* Baba Yaga. Because the witch with Gingerbread House is such a big deal in Hansel and Gretel’s story but also like... Gretel could not kill Baba Yaga. so a memory trapped in a story, like the Big Bad Wolf who is Death but can be killed over and over again in countless tales. idk. Half of the fun of engaging in fiction is getting too engaged in fiction okay. While Gretel the Witch freed Hansel, he took time to regain his strength and then followed a path she’d left (I’m imagining scorched footsteps for dramatic purposes) finding that with her new witch powers she’d been able to find her way back to their home and killed their parents. He’s a little conflicted about this but over time kinda hardens his heart and settles on ‘I would choose Gretel over them, I’ll stand by her on this’ and sets off to try and find her’ and that’s where the story finds him.
I’m thinking like he ends up with the biggest age gap between lives, entering the game as about 14. Still unsure and kind of childlike in his temperament. I think he’d be a ranger... just kind of a boy scout sort of guy. Has an axe but it’s his dad’s and he doesn’t really have the strength to use it so he’s got a crossbow to make up for it. He fancies himself a tracker but he’s comply lost Gretel’s trail and is starting to give up hope that he’ll ever find her again. Then he dies and wakes up in his second story, this time he’s a goat. as the memories of Brother and Sister flash to his mind, his sister calling to him from under the flowing waters of the river, the awakening of a second mind in his body partially breaks the spell that had held this body in the form of a goat for many years, just as the goat was to be killed. In a panic Hansel just kinda kicks and flails and fights his way out, running until he finally finds a way to regroup, readjust, and find his party again. This time he’s come to realize that his and his sister’s names are different, though he goes by Hansel to the group because it’s the most conscious memory. Their histories are different, and the witch that haunted them no longer had a trap in the woods, but was in some nature a Stepmother and Witch, who had cursed him to be a goat when he’d drank water from the hoof of a goat. And he’s like an adult because of how much time he spent as a goat. Mostly just to represent some character growth ‘cause in my head I want to like have a prologue version of Hansel and then Adult Hansel even though the explanation for which is a bit weak... And the Stepmother/Baba Yaga connection... I maybe will figure out how to weave into the grain of the existing story when we gain more information, idk. This is my like... indulgent OC story to imagine scenarios with. I don’t know if that’s not an acceptable thing or not I am an entirely blockable blog I suppose if ‘having an OC’ is something that bugs people. I just want him to be ‘chip on his shoulder older brother’ archetype while also like... looking for his sister who is like going through her villain witch phase maybe which like... fair. who hasn’t? but like. call? send a letter? come on. don’t leave your bro hanging like this.

The Secret Sauce that Most Traders Forget Picture this: you're in a high-stakes game of tug-of-war with the Forex market, and the rope is slipping. You tug harder, but the market just yanks back, leaving you flat on the ground. This, my friends, is what happens when you ignore the subtle power of the trade balance in your price action trading strategy. Just like buying those ridiculously impractical shoes on sale that will gather dust in your closet—it’s a missed opportunity to add something truly game-changing to your arsenal. Now, let's get to the good part—how to balance the forces of the market and use price action like a true pro. But first, remember, this isn’t just your typical "support and resistance" lecture. We’re diving into the less-traveled, underground side of Forex, where the magic truly happens. Think of it as discovering the secret menu at your favorite coffee shop—only better, because it can make you some serious pips. The Real Trade Balance Ninja Tactic: Beyond the Textbooks Most traders get so caught up in the flashy indicators and super-duper secret strategies that they forget to look at one simple, powerful metric: the trade balance. When it comes to price action trading, understanding a country’s trade balance is like getting a sneak peek behind the curtain at the Wizard of Oz. Spoiler alert: he’s got some strings you didn’t know about, and those strings move the market. You see, the trade balance is one of those economic indicators that subtly influences the movement of currency pairs. Countries with surplus trade balances tend to have stronger currencies, and those with deficits... well, let’s just say their currencies can look like a sad puppy when global sentiment shifts. Case in point: Germany’s relentless trade surplus often supports the Euro, even when all signs point to otherwise. By keeping an eye on the monthly trade balance reports, you’re adding a secret weapon to your price action toolkit—one that most traders don't even think about. Why You Should Care About Trade Balance in Price Action Trading Now, you might be thinking, "Alright, but how does this help me with price action trading?" Good question! It helps you spot trends before the rest of the herd catches on. Imagine being the first to realize a fundamental shift in a country’s economy—one that starts to reflect in the charts as institutional traders begin to reposition. This is the hidden alpha—the opportunity that everyone misses because they’re too busy checking if their RSI is screaming "overbought." Here’s where the magic happens: price action isn’t just about lines on a chart; it’s about understanding the "why" behind the movement. A sudden widening trade deficit? Expect price action to tell that story with a significant shift in the market. It’s like hearing a thunderstorm coming before seeing a flash of lightning—being that first person to prepare makes all the difference. The Lesser-Known Trick: Trade Balance Patterns & Price Action Synergy Now, let’s talk patterns—not your standard head and shoulders or double tops. We’re talking about synergies between economic trade balance shifts and chart patterns. If you spot an economy moving from a surplus to a deficit, take a look at how the price action shifts in key currency pairs. Many traders miss these subtle shifts, thinking of fundamentals as dry economic jargon best left to analysts with thick glasses. But oh boy, are they missing out! Take Japan, for example. When trade surpluses in Japan started to wane in the mid-2000s, the market gave clues in price action way before analysts did. The changes were there, like breadcrumbs leading Hansel and Gretel, for those willing to follow the trail. By catching these signs early, you could’ve stayed ahead of the crowd. It’s about reading between the lines—understanding not just where price is moving, but why it’s choosing that direction. Price Action + Trade Balance = Chart Whisperer So, how do you become a chart whisperer, you ask? Let’s dive into some elite tactics that combine price action with trade balance insights. - Observe Trade Balance Trends: Use monthly trade balance reports to gauge the economic health of key nations. Germany, the United States, China—keep these on your radar. A declining trade surplus? It’s your cue to start sniffing out weaknesses in currency movements. - Watch for Confirmation in Price Action: Once you have trade balance data, look for price confirmation. If there’s a growing deficit, see if major support levels on the chart are weakening—and prepare for potential breakouts or shifts in market sentiment. - Catch the Institutional Shift: Institutions don’t move money on a whim. They move based on solid, data-backed shifts, like changes in trade balance. By monitoring these, you’ll see subtle changes in price action that clue you into where the big boys are headed. The Unconventional Approach: Puns, Pips, and Progress Let’s take a second here to inject a little humor—because if you can’t laugh about trading, are you even really trading? Remember that time you accidentally hit the ‘sell’ button instead of ‘buy’ and then watched your account turn into a bad sitcom plot twist? Yep, we’ve all been there. The key, though, is not to make those mistakes when it really matters—like when trade balances are shifting, and the market is hinting at something you should probably pay attention to. Why Most Traders Ignore Trade Balance—And Why You Shouldn’t The average trader thinks about indicators, maybe even a few patterns, and calls it a day. But the truth is, the big moves happen when fundamentals and technicals align. Most traders ignore economic indicators like trade balance because it takes effort to connect the dots. But that’s precisely where the edge lies—where you can turn yourself from an average Joe into a trading ninja. And to all those who still think trade balance is just a bunch of nerdy data? Ask them how that indicator-riddled chart is working out. Because while they’re fumbling with stochastic crossovers, you’ll be riding that trade with a rock-solid understanding of why it’s happening. Counterintuitive Insight: Deficits Can Mean Opportunities Here’s a kicker: trade deficits aren’t always a bad thing. Contrary to what your Economics 101 professor taught you, a deficit can also signal opportunity. Countries often finance deficits through investments, which can lead to bullish sentiments in the short to medium term. A rising deficit might actually create a strong buying opportunity in the country's currency—especially if the influx of investments is targeted at growth-driven sectors. Predicting Market Moves With Price Action Precision Alright, let’s piece it all together with a little guide you can keep handy. These steps will help you use the trade balance with your price action trading: - Step 1: Start by tracking the monthly release of trade balance data for major economies. Use platforms like Forex Factory or the Bureau of Economic Analysis. - Step 2: Identify any significant changes—either surpluses moving towards deficits or deficits narrowing towards surpluses. These are major inflection points. - Step 3: Cross-reference these changes with price action on major currency pairs like EUR/USD, USD/JPY, or AUD/USD. - Step 4: Look for patterns that suggest continuation or reversal—flag, wedge, or double top. Confirm that these align with the fundamental story you’re tracking. - Step 5: Plan your entry. Using price action around key support or resistance levels, enter when you see a confluence between economic data and price confirmation. The Edge No One Sees Coming The magic here isn’t just about being ahead of the game—it’s about understanding the full picture. The Forex market is like a giant puzzle, and every trader has different pieces. Most traders look at the same charts, the same patterns. But when you add a deep understanding of trade balance to your price action strategy, you’re playing a different game. You’re not just reacting to price—you’re anticipating it, understanding it, and exploiting it. So next time you’re tempted to gloss over the trade balance data, think again. Ask yourself: do you want to follow the herd, or do you want to ride the hidden trends, armed with elite tactics that most traders ignore? The answer is pretty obvious. —————– Image Credits: Cover image at the top is AI-generated   Read the full article

could i possible get a character palette for my feywanderer ranger Hazel? she’s essentially a bad end Gretel from Hansel and Gretel, wherein her brother died but thanks to fey intervention, she survived. she wears a red top and black pants, her black hair is crazy curly and tangled, and part of her connection to the fey means that she always smells like someone’s favorite dessert

Avery Emerson Clay: Daddy Cams Are the Devil
Dinner was a fend for ourselves situation - Jake grabbed ours and met me outside. He pulled me toward the cart and told me we were taking ours and heading for the trip.
“Are you trying to distract me, Jake Jensen?” I asked, squinting suspiciously at him. His only answer was a smile as he took the wheel and headed toward my playful goats.
We managed a picnic on the cart, Nuisance and Roo were frolicing and demanding attention, and Jake was doing his damnedest to keep my mind on the here and now, and NOT on the Max and Rose. He pulled me from the cart to help with feeding and watering my little trip, getting giggles out of me when the little ones butted him with their safety covered horns. By the end of our mini break, I was feeling marginally less tense.
“There,” he was tilting my chin up with his thumb, his finger tracing my smile. “There’s the smile I’m growing more and more used to,” leaning closer, his lips met mine and I sighed into the feel of him, the warmth and the strength. When we pulled slightly apart, our gazes locked and I was even more relaxed and definitely open to becoming MORE so when we got back to the house and one of our bedrooms.
“Let’s head back,” I murmured and he nodded, clearly of the same mind. “I think it’s time for bed, don’t you?”
I drove the cart back, feeling far more calm than I had since first noticing Rose missing from our family, and by some miracle the only obstacles we ran into in our path to the bedroom were four legged and furry. Once his bedroom door was shut behind us, because Jake insisted we needed a completely different perspective, his mouth met mine and I couldn’t have agreed with him more.
Captain Jake Jensen LOOKED like a muscle bound geek who was utterly awkward and had exactly ZERO in the way of game, but get him started and wow.
Any residual tension I had left was stripped away as he took off each piece of my clothing - teasing my skin with a butterfly light touch, then his lips would ghost past, next his teeth and tongue - until the only thing I could think or focus on was him and me, the room, and how quickly we could get horizontal or hell, he could press me against the wall, I wanted him NOW.
My brain is a funny organ, as Jake was bringing me over the edge, on his bed - without any of my furry loved ones witnessing or trying to join in this time - it hit me. Like a flash of shock, excitement that I’d finally unlocked ANOTHER puzzle piece in Max’s game, and then HORROR - because what my mind had realized as Jake and I were joined, as the muscles of his back rippled in the gleam of the overhead light as he rocked into me and I arched back against him - was this: the same technology that had allowed Dad to know that Clay was home could be accessed by Max and I had a dark feeling had been. The hint about how lovely our house was, the tiny nuggets he tossed out like Hansel and Gretel left to mark their path, and I was SO FUCKING SLOW to figure it out.
“Jake,” I gasped, he had moved just so and I could hardly catch my breath and a HUGE part of me wanted to push what I’d figured out aside and just have this with him, for a moment longer, but then I thought about ROSE. His lips were on my shoulder and I tried again, “Jake,” it came out stronger this time, but he misunderstood, moaning my name in answer and I sighed. “JAKE!” That did it, he rose up, movement stopped and stared down at me, my face was close enough that even without his glasses he could see me perfectly.
“What?” His eyes were wide and I knew he thought he hurt me, or worse, he looked over his shoulder - Dad or Clay had burst in while he was busy.
“I think Max hacked into the security cameras,” he was squinting down at me, trying to mentally catch up with me. “The Daddy cams that Dad has installed all over the house and compound?” His eyes went wide and I thought he might be getting there. “What if he hacked those, or had help getting into them?”
“Like he did your email?” He nodded, but he didn’t pull away. We were still joined and I was a little shocked that he wasn’t growing limp. “You think that one of the GI guys he has -” He had his weight on his elbows and I watched as he thought it through. “I have a program working, it should have Max’s IP address or his VPN even marked by now.” I looked up at him and waited for him to roll off. “Or we could finish -”
I licked my lips and thought about the options available. While I knew that time was of the essence, it did seem rather wasteful to just STOP right here - arching up into his body, Jake’s eyes fluttered shut and then his mouth met mine and we chose to finish what we started. After all, Clays aren’t quitters.
It was full dark when we finished up - a job worth doing was a job worth doing well, people. And I ALMOST felt bad about possibly stopping my fellow Clays from doing their own best work, but what I’d figured out was IMPORTANT. And I was still harboring a HUGE fucking chip on my shoulder over Clay’s bullshit big brother moves and Dad’s nonsense too, so I tried VERY hard to hold back on shouting out with GLEE when I called everyone to meet us in the library.
It took awhile, clearly my family members were as focused on completing their independent missions as I had been, but eventually we were all gathered together again - though we all looked far less tense so I was willing to bet that - for the Clay portion of the team at least - we’d taken advantage of our emotional support partners.
“What was so damn important that you felt the urge to scream ‘FIRE’, Avery Emerson?” Dad’s voice sounded a little more gravely than usual and I almost asked him why that was, if I’d woken him from a restful sleep, but I had a new more important topic to discuss. “I think Max has your Daddy cams hacked.” I’d planned on easing them into it, but my tact came through as always. Dad’s face took on the color of Rose’s oatmeal before she added in the good stuff - fruit, cinnamon, and sugar - while Clay crossed his arms over his chest and waited for more information. “I was in the middle of -” I shot a look at Jake and his face turned a fascinating color combination of reddish purple. “Discussing a variety of complicated positioning tactics with Jake.” My big brother’s expression didn’t change so I went on, “and it hit me - the tiny digs that Max tosses into his emails. Like bread crumbs or puzzle pieces.”
“Such as?” Mom had sat down on the sofa and I took a deep breath while I gathered my thoughts to answer her.
“He mentioned how horrible it would be for our ‘beautiful home’ to be part of the collateral damage - which could be a throwaway line, right?” She nodded. “Clay?” I glanced at my big brother and his eyes narrowed to show he was waiting for the question. “Does Max just toss out throwaway lines, or does he play with his prey?”
And that was all it took to get the ball rolling. Jake was told to move his operation - as it were - to the library. Not only was he searching for the source of Max’s IP or VPN location, but now he had to look into whether or not our security system had a hack or leak. Both should be easy, but what Jake was finding, with the first search at least, was that whomever Max had Pied Pipered away from GI wasn’t a novice in tech or in hiding their tracks.
“This guy is no slouch,” he was studying the screen of his laptop with a look that combined concentration with a healthy dose of respect. “Too bad for him that he’s still not on my level.” I shook my head, but the tug that came low in my belly shocked me a little. I wasn’t expecting to be turned on by the geek side of him.
While Jake worked on his part of finding Max, Dad asked me to grab my laptop to see if I was graced with a response to my last email to the raging asshole. Opening it up, I found a shit ton more work related ones, but nothing from the email associated with him. Shaking my head, I left it up and sitting beside Jake’s. Since it looked like we were in for a long night, I pulled up a chair and started opening up work files - might as well be productive, right?
“Keeping me company?” Jake asked, his fingers moving faster than mine across his keyboard.
My smile was lit by my screen. “The bed is too big without you.”

speaking of the episode “mother”--well, i quit watching the show about halfway through this particular season, so i don’t have the patience nor the interest to watch the whole thing straight through. the writing of this show really jumped the shark mid-season 2 and i think it really shows in how awfully they flub things like the confrontation between regina and cora at the end of the episode, which for some reason they split in the middle with a lengthy flash-forward, completely destroying the dramatic tension. (the only reason the hyperion heights storyline at the end of the show was fun, i think, is because they went true to form in a completely 1:1 way and essentially duplicated the format of the first, best-written season.) but it highlights some really interesting things for me:
regina in this episode is completely different from when cora last saw her. it’s been over 10 years and she’s a totally self-confident and powerful aggressor who challenges virtually everything cora says. it really brings out the dissonance, imo, in having her react to cora so dramatically at the end of the episode; she’s an adult now and cora simply has no control over her anymore, beyond the purely emotional--and both of them know it.
in fact, the fact that cora comes back to her with apologies and apparent humility proves that she knows she can’t control regina anymore. she needs to get on her good side in any way she can, even through the most THINLY veiled excuses, in order to try to gain some sway over regina again. and the trick she plays on regina by hiring someone to pose as her soulmate is another part of this. the thing is that she thinks that underneath it all, regina is still the exact same person she was, and that she can access that same person--that she can squirm under her armor and get to the part of regina that desperately craves love. but right now, she can’t. regina, again, has all the power, and won’t let her in--she doesn’t have to.
for me, for all my criticisms of this episode, not to mention the fact that i don’t recognize these exact events as canon for my regina, it really sets up cora’s scheme in “the cricket game,” which was all about very deliberate and pointed destruction of regina’s safety net in order to gain access to her feelings. she already knows she can’t control regina while regina feels in control; she needs regina helpless and afraid, so that she (cora) can resume power over her life.
also, no matter the fact that cora seemingly lectures regina and delivers The Moral Of The Story (this didactic fucking show, i swear) at the end of the episode--i don’t buy for a fucking second that she ever meant anything she said to regina sincerely.
i think in my version of this event, where it takes place prior to leopold’s death, what cora does is offer to kill leopold and snow with regina once regina is pregnant with leopold’s child. that way, they’ll have a claim on the throne and be able to puppet regina’s future child as regents. but regina correctly assesses that once that happens, she’ll not only be pregnant with a child she does not want by a man she despises, but also be once again helpless and dependent on her mother over the course of her pregnancy--two terrifying prospects for her. she chooses to take the potion rather than risk that ever happening.
this brings her later interest in, for example, hansel and gretel, into a new light. regina does have buried urges to parent and wants a family of her own, but she’s already made the decision that that won’t happen for her, biologically, so those early flickers of interest in adoptive children i think take on a different valence.
