Tomcats (2001)
Tomcats is a sex comedy so aggressively misogynist, so unfunny, and so inept it will make you want to chemically castrate yourself with molten lava. Itâs an extreme statement but your hatred towards this film will be extreme. Anything you can do to dissociate yourself from this wretched excuse for entertainment isnât enough.
As another member of the gang gets married, the remaining bachelors make a pact to stay single forever. To make their pledge more interesting, everyone in attendance agrees to throw money in a fund every year, with the last âtomcatâ taking the whole thing. Years later, when Michael (Jerry OâConnell) becomes indepted to pit boss Carlos (Bill Maher, who adds another reason to hate him by appearing in this film), he desperately needs cash. He makes it his mission to get Kyle (Jake Busey) to fall in love with the one woman he came closest to caring for, Natalie (Shannon Elizabeth).
At least writer/director Gregory Poirier lays his cards on the table right away. This is American Pie if ALL of the characters were Stiffler after spending a decade inside the world of Porkyâs and then 10 times less funny. To the men in this film, women are not potential partners or lovers and friendship is out of the question. If you have a pair of breasts and youâre attractive, youâre another target. If youâre old or overweight, youâre garbage. Nothing could be worse than telling a woman âI love youâ or spending the rest of your life in a monogamous relationship.
Assuming you can get past the rampant hatred for women that stinks up the entire running time, youâre in for a ridiculous and convoluted premise. In a bid to impress a woman who âonly pays attention to high rollersâ, Michael blows over $50,000 dollars on the casino floor in one night. I say if heâs that stupid, let him get dumped in the ocean with cement shoes. Heâs too dumb to live. Instead, heâs given one chance to save his life by setting up his âfriendâ in a fake marriage to a woman who hates him. Granted, said friend took Natalie's virginity and threw her away like a proposition to allow women the right to vote, so you don't feel bad for him. Turns out Natalie is a vengeful undercover police officer and sheâs more than willing to use the precinctâs ressources to spy on a civilian. Plus, she'll get paid, so that's great but uh oh! The more time she and Michael spend together, the more they realize they have things in common⊠What could happen next?
The plot is as predictable as it gets and since there is no character development or relationships to be fleshed out, the running time is padded with gags so lame theyâll make you beg for death. When Natalie hints to Michael that she may be falling for Kyle, he becomes furious. In retaliation, he decides heâll sleep with the next woman he sees (itâs that easy, donât you know?). First oneâs a fatty so he meant the first HOT woman he sees. Itâs a demure librarian. Iâll give you three guesses what happens when she brings him home. Itâs awful, but not as awful as the gag in which Michael has to chase down a runaway testicle in the hospital (really) or the running joke in which Michael and Kyleâs mutual friend, Steve (Horatio Sanz) thinks his beautiful wife, Tricia (Jaime Pressly) is cheating on him with another woman. She is and he would be mad about it but when he gets invited to join the in the bedroom, all of his anger and anxieties go away.
The performances from the leads arenât the worst youâve seen. Or maybe they just seem decent compared to Jaime Pressly, who is so awful you swear they sculpted her out of pine and dragged her on set. Your jaw drops but you pick it up quickly out of fear that some bodily fluid will fly out of the screen and into your mouth. This is the one area where the film kind of shows restraint. Aside from a fake-look lactating breast shown during a horrifying fantasy sequence, there isnât any nudity in this movie⊠until the end credits when we see a bunch of outtakes, none of which are any funnier than the actual movie.
If all of these flaws werenât enough, the direction is aw-ful. Gregory Poirier transitions from scene to scene like an amateur. You know those transitions you find in Microsoft Powerpoint? The one where the screen spins on itself, the checkerboard cross, the zig-zag cross, and the circle wipe? all are used without a dash of irony. The budding âromanceâ between Natalie and Michael isnât the least bit convincing because a) the actors have no chemistry whatsoever and b) their dialogue is never romantic or realistic. Constantly, your eyes will dart towards the clock on your player. Has it really only been an hour? Weâve got how many more minutes to go?
I havenât hated a movie as much as I hated Tomcats in a while. Itâs hard to imagine ANYONE watching the film and having a good time unless they were one of those âbros before hoesâ idiots⊠and even then, they wouldnât be able to relate to this filmâs ending so thatâs a no-go for those chowderheads either. I canât wait to forget I ever saw this abomination. (On VHS, May 9, 2021)

"Knox Goes Away"
Michael Keaton makes his directorial debut with âKnox Goes Away,â a stale, exhausting, wannabe modern noir film. Heâs not a terrible director, but the ridiculous and convoluted script (by Gregory Poirier) is something that wrecks the film from the get-go. Contract killer John Knox (Keaton) has just been diagnosed with a rapidly advancing form of dementia, and heâs taking the news surprisinglyâŠ

The script, by Gregory Poirier, is tautly clever and original, and Keaton directs it with a cunning and skill that are quietly hypnotic.

Knox Goes Away Review: Michael Keaton's Directorial Debut Is Tame
Anybody that knows me knows that I have been a massive fan of Michael Keaton ever since I was sixteen years old. Despite being a lifelong Batman fan, it wasn't until that age that I took the character very seriously and it became a big part of who I was. The 1989 Batman film is by no means the best, but it probably means the most to me, and a large portion of why is because of Keaton's undeniable charm and enthusiasm. It's a career-defining role. He's also done quite a handful of films since then, of course, and I've made an effort to see every one of them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZ8SeYVnc9A That's why I was so excited to hear that Keaton had directed a movie of his own called Knox Goes Away. I didn't even need to know what it was about and who was in it - I just wanted to see it. Period. But, unfortunately, although there are certainly some strong elements on display here, I found myself mostly let down by Knox Goes Away. There are moments of true greatness that made me realize just how much potential Keaton has as a director, but there were other moments where the film came across as very boring. The film aims to weave a complex narrative blending crime thriller elements with the tragic unraveling of a mind under siege by Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Despite its ambitions and a star-studded cast including James Marsden, Suzy Nakamura, Joanna Kulig, and Al Pacino, the film ultimately delivers a disjointed narrative experience that dilutes its more compelling themes. Keaton's portrayal of Knox is arguably the film's strongest asset. He demonstrates an adeptness at conveying the nuances of a man divided by his life's decisions, and the relentless advance of a disease eroding his sense of self. The scenes capturing Knox's struggles with his mental deterioration are crafted with care. It provides glimpses into the vulnerability of a man who has spent his life in the shadows. The dynamic between Knox and Annie, portrayed with a delicate balance of hope and melancholy by Joanna Kulig, stands out as one of the film's more poignant threads, offering a rare glimpse into the softer side of Knox's world. However, the ambitious scope of the plot seems to be the film's Achilles' heel. The narrative attempts to juggle too many subplots. This includes the complex relationship with Knox's estranged family and the investigative thread led by Detective Emily Ikari (Suzy Nakamura). The film's pacing suffers as a result, with crucial character developments and narrative twists feeling rushed or, at times, superficial. The detective storyline lacks depth, with Nakamura's character feeling underdeveloped and sidelined. The script, penned by Gregory Poirier, occasionally shines with sharp dialogue and intricate character interactions. However, it fails to maintain a consistent narrative rhythm. Plot developments feel contrived, especially in the third act. The film's climax, meant to shock, comes across as predictable. The resolution leaves a number of thematic and narrative threads unresolved. The film's portrayal of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is convenient rather than accurate. The progression of the disease in Knox feels inconsistent. It serves more as a plot device than a grounded portrayal of the illness. This not only undermines the gravity of Knox's predicament but also diminishes the emotional impact of his deteriorating condition. The supporting cast delivers commendable performances. James Marsden's portrayal of Miles Knox adds a necessary depth to the strained father-son relationship. Al Pacino, as the crime lord Xavier Crane, brings gravitas to every scene he's in. Although, his character's motivations remain somewhat murky throughout the film. The ensemble cast, including Marcia Gay Harden as Knox's ex-wife, is underutilized. This hints at lost opportunities to explore the richer backstories and dynamics that could have enriched the film. Knox Goes Away does succeed in moments that capture the introspective and existential challenges faced by its protagonist. However, these moments scatter within a narrative framework that struggles to cohere into a compelling whole. The film's attempt to blend crime thriller elements with a personal story falls short. The visual direction and cinematography provide some redemption, with scenes masterfully capturing the mood and tone of Knox's turbulent world. The score, while effective in heightening the tension, occasionally feels overbearing, detracting from the subtler, more emotionally resonant moments. Overall: Knox Goes Away is a film that, despite its potential, struggles under the weight of its ambitious narrative. It offers a thought-provoking glimpse into the human condition and the complexities of redemption. But it ultimately fails to deliver a coherent and emotionally satisfying experience. For fans of the genre and the cast, it might be worth a watch. However, one wonders what might have been if the film had had a sharper focus and execution. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gK6-Xq9910Y Read the full article

Ving Rhames (as Mann) and Elise Neal (as Beulah) in Rosewood (1997).
Rosewood, Florida, is a small, peaceful town with an almost entirely African-American population of middle-class homeowners, until New Yearâs Day 1923, when a lynch mob from a neighboring white community storms the town. Among the carnage, music teacher Sylvester (Don Cheadle) and mysterious stranger Mann (Ving Rhames) stand tall against the invaders.
The film is based on a true story.
Director: John Singleton | Screenplay: Gregory Poirier
