Fantasy Booking- AWA 1981
Fantasy Booking- AWA 1981
Rob Faint The year is 1981 and Verne Gagne was the AWA champion. He had been wrestling since 1949 and the years had taken their toll. He decided to retire and instead of a long tournament it was decided that the title would be awarded to the top contender, Nick Bockwinkel. This move infuriated many fans. Continue reading Untitled

I was gonna write a big analysis post about how Triter is like Greg's Evil Twin but instead I need to inform you all that last night I forgot his name and referred to him as "Officer Tito" so now that's his name in this household and you all know too.

Here are more scenes from an especially homoerotic match between Greg "The Hammer" Valentine and Tito Santana, recently posted to YouTube.
The most sexually suggestive moment was probably when Valentine stood over his loverboy enemy, crotch at face level, and Santana reaches up between his legs to fully expose his ass:
Valentine is so wonderfully compliant and submissive to Tito in this match, letting himself be Ball Busted, emasculated, and fully exposed. It's a good look for Valentine who is usually 100% dominant and fully in control. I never really got off on Valentine, but seeing this vulnerable, Beta-male side of him, maybe I should reconsider...

Royal Rumble Marathon: 1992
The Royal Rumble marathon continues into 1992.
Spoilers for past Rumbles…
The undercard:
The Orient Express vs the New Foundation.
We see footage of the Mountie defeating Bret Hart. The commentators noted Bret wrestled with a high fever and is now out with the flu. I’m assuming Bret was sick as it would be an odd choice to change the title on a house show three days before Bret’s advertised match against the Mountie at the Royal Rumble. Roddy comes to Bret’s defense and will take his place against the now-champion Mountie.
The Mountie vs Roddy Piper. Roddy gets a huge reaction. Roddy wins his only WWF/E title when he defeats the Mountie.
The Bushwhackers (with Jamison) vs the Beverly Brothers (with the Genius). This re-watch marathon is bringing back memories of performers I haven’t thought of in decades. Jamison? That’s a blast from the past. If you’re too young to remember Jamison, think of a nerdy Rick Moreno type combined with a dash of the “Eugene” gimmick.
The Legion of Doom vs the Natural Disasters. Last year at the Rumble, Tugboat was helping Hogan fight Earthquake, now he calls himself Typhoon and has formed a tag team with Earthquake. I recommend the “Dark Side of the Ring” episode on Earthquake, it wasn’t “dark” per se but it was an interesting look at the man behind the gimmick. I never liked the Legion of Doom’s presentation in the WWF. The Road Warriors in the AWA/NWA were scary and intimidating. The team went to the WWF and their mystique/aura decreased by 75%.
Sean Mooney interviews a newly-turned Shawn Michaels with footage from the infamous Barbershop attack on Marty Janetty. The Rockers break-up has to be one of the all-time heel turns.
Hype vignettes before the Rumble: Flair, Savage, Sid Justice, Repo Man, Davey Boy, Jake Roberts, Undertaker, Hogan,
Marty Janetty and Nasty Boy Knobbs have lost their spots in the Royal Rumble due to injuries (though I think Janetty’s was in-storyline only as this took place a week after Shawn sent Marty through the barbershop window). Nikolai Volkoff and Haku will take their spots.
For the first time the Rumble has a point as this year the winner will become the WWF World heavyweight champion. If I remember correctly, the title was vacated/held up due to a Hogan/Undertaker storyline.
The entrants in order of appearance:
Davey Boy Smith
Ted DiBase (accompanied by Sherri Martel)
Ric Flair (accompanied by Mister Perfect)
Nasty Boy Sags
Haku
Shawn Michaels
“El Matador” Tito Santana (Such a lame gimmick for Tito)
The Barbarian
Kerry Von Erich
Repo Man (formerly known as Smash of Demolition) It’s a silly gimmick but I love it
Greg “The Hammer” Valentine
Nikolai Volkoff
Big Boss Man
Hercules
“Rowdy” Roddy Piper
Jake “the Snake” Roberts
“Hacksaw” Jim Duggan
IRS (Mike Rotunda)
“Superfly” Jimmy Snuka
The Undertaker
“Macho Man” Randy Savage
The Berzerker (John Nord)
Virgil
Iron Sheik (referred to as Mustafa, accompanied by Adnan)
Rick “the Model” Martel
Hulk Hogan
Skinner (Steve Keirn)
Sgt Slaughter
Sid Justice
The Warlord (accompanied by Slick)
Flair wins the Rumble to become the new world champion. Hogan is the worst babyface ever – he has a hissy when Sid eliminates him from the Rumble, helps Flair eliminate Sid from the Rumble after his own elimination, and then chases Flair from the ring so he can’t celebrate his victory. Hogan continues to have a hissy at Sid. I never liked Hogan as a child and rewatching his storylines as an adult I can understand why all his “frends” eventually turn on him. He sucks!
Only the first two entrants received entrance music. Managers were allowed to accompany their charges to ringside but could not remain in the area (the WWF flip flops on whether managers could remain at ringside during the early years ).
First time Rumblers: Ric Flair, Nasty Boy Sags, IRS, Berzerker, Virgil, Skinner, Sid Justice
Highlights: Heenan having a panic attack the length of the Rumble over the possibility of Flair’s elimination, Flair’s performance, Savage accidentally eliminates himself but Taker throws him back in to continue in the Rumble. Flair sets a new endurance record for the Rumble
March to Wrestlemania: Hogan and Sid have their confrontation to set up their Wrestlemania match.
Wrestlers and others who have passed on: Gorilla Monsoon, Bobby Heenan, Howard Finkel, Mr. Fuji, Owen Hart, Jim Neidhart (we have six deceased individual within 5 minutes of the event starting), Lord Alfred Hayes, Roddy Piper, “The Genius” Lanny Poffo, Bushwhacker Butch, the Legion of Doom, Earthquake, Mean Gene Okerlund, “Mister Perfect” Curt Henning, Paul Bearer, Jack Tunney, Davey Boy Smith, Sherri Martel, Kerry Von Erich, Nikolai Volkoff, Big Boss Man, Hercules, Jimmy Snuka, Joey Marella, Virgil, Iron Sheik, Adnan.
Total number of deceased performers: 28, passing the previous Rumble by seven.
Rating: 8 out of 10

Fantasy booking-the 1st Intercontinental tournament
Rob Faint We all know the story of how Pat Patterson won the IC title back in 1979. The story is he won the title in a fictitious tournament in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. My question is, why did the WWF not run a real tournament? Who would have been the participants? In this column I attempt to book the tournament acknowledging Patterson as the eventual winner. OGL Bullshit
I'd been avoiding it because the last few weeks have been brutal, but have a few non-lawyerly notes on why I don't trust the new "playtest" OGL 1.2 bullshit and think others should hesitate as well.
I'd experimented with putting out 5e stuff this year, but I've already pulled it from DTRPG and will be pulling it from Itch on Feb. 1. I'm not going back to D&D 5e as a publisher, DM, or player, and will not be publishing anything under a Hasbro or WotC-controlled license going forward. I still plan to pull everything published under OGL 1.0a by the end of year to avoid yet more Hasbro shenanigans.
Hasbro's still engaged in a blatant attempt to squash non-WotC OGL game creators, even though they've benefited substantially from that market and recruited most of the full-time D&D team from. Mike Mearls created the OGL-based game Iron Heroes at Malhavoc. Jeremy Crawford co-created the original Blue Rose (the basis for True20) at Green Ronin. Greg Tito has a co-author credit on ACKS. F. Wesley Schneider worked on Pathfinder at Paizo.
While actual attorneys have done a good job on why the CC-BY material they're currently planning to release is bullshit, much of it isn't even original to WotC, who didn't create many of the more distinctive mechanics. For instance, the system now called advantage/disadvantage was a popular mechanic in d20-based fantasy games well before 5e, and appeared in Barbarians of Lemuria under those names way back in 2008.
"Hateful conduct" is a smokescreen. Hasbro execs and their chosen attorneys will be the ones determining what constitutes "hateful conduct" (according to the draft agreement, if I accept the agreement, I waive my right to legally challenge their decisions). If you think those execs and attorneys are going to care or enforce fairly without relentless, aggressive, and widespread pressure, I've got a collection of bridges to sell you.
I won't trust a megacorp with phrases like "obscene" or "illegal": we're living in a decade when drag performance and "flamboyant femininity" could get criminalized in some places and excellent anthologies like Honey & Hot Wax deemed obscene. "You should trust us," is what Hasbro will say. I can't and shouldn't. Even if I like, know, and support current WotC D&D Team, they're not the ones who are going to be making these decisions (they might not even be on WotC's D&D team when Hasbro's decide to threaten to enforce it). Remember how much both Hasbro and WotC have changed as an org since 1.0a went into effect in 2000. I may have met and liked WotC staffers, but they may not be there in 3 years (or even 1 year) and they're unlikely to have any real control over license enforcement even now.
Again, this is "why I'm ditching 5e and will be ditching all OGL 1 material." It's not legal advice, just how I'm making decisions.

Royal Rumble Marathon: 1991
We’re rumbling into 1991.
Spoilers for past Rumbles,
For those too young to remember, this year’s Rumble took place during the Gulf War. Vince had the brilliant idea to take Sgt. Slaughter, one of the most patriotic wrestlers of the 1980s and star of the GI Joe cartoon and turn him into Hussein sympathizer. Stupid. Personally, I think wrestling should stay away from real-life events as the industry reduces them to racist caricatures and stereotypes. Real-life wars are tragedies, not entertainment. I watch wrestling for entertainment.
I’m only reviewing the Rumble, but the undercard is pretty good:
The Rockers vs the Orient Express
Sherri confronts the Ultimate Warrior. Re-watching the older pay per views can be a depressing experience when you realize how many stars have passed way too soon. All four participants in this segment (Mene Gene mediates, Randy Savage ambushes the Warrior) are deceased. The two commentators (Gorilla Monsoon, Roddy Piper) have passed. From the first match, Mr Fuji has passed. We’re a half hour into this program, and we’re at a fatality count of 7. On a more positive note, Sherri is one of the most talented women the sport has seen.
The Barbarian (managed by Bobby Heenan) vs the Big Boss Man (add two more to the casualty count)
Sgt Slaughter (managed by General Adnan) vs the Ultimate Warrior. Sherri (in a new outfit) and Savage interfere in the match and, honestly, are the best part of this match. Adnan has passed on, so the number of deceased performers is at 10.
Koko B Ware vs the Mountie (managed by Jimmy Hart). The Mountie always gets his man! And we finally have a match where no one has died!
Dusty & Dustin Rhodes vs Ted DiBase & Virgil (add two more to the passed on category, we’re now at a total of 12 performers that have left us too soon. Side note: Dusty’s WWE theme is one of my all-time favorites. DiBase’s theme is also a banger. Virgil finally turns on the Million-Dollar Man!
The entrants of the Rumble in order of appearance:
Bret Hart (2nd time the Hitman has been the #1 participant)
Dino Bravo (managed by Jimmy Hart)
Greg Valentine (managed by Jimmy Hart)
Paul Roma (managed by Slick)
“Texas Tornado” Kerry Von Erich (Kerry ran to the ring – I can see why people were unaware that he had a foot amputated).
Rick Martel
Tony Atlas (or Samba Simba as he was known at the time…such a bad stereotypical gimmick)
Bushwhacker Butch
Jake Roberts
Hercules (managed by Slick)
Tito Santana
Undertaker (managed by Brother Love)
Jimmy Snuka
Davey Boy Smith
Smash of Demolition
Hawk of the Legion of Doom
Shane Douglas (post-Dynamic Dudes but pre-Franchise)
No-Show (Supposed to be Randy Savage but he was too busy running from the Ultimate Warrior)
Animal of the Legion of Doom
Crush of Demolition
Hacksaw Jim Duggan
Earthquake (managed by Jimmy Hart)
Mister Perfect (managed by Bobby Heenan)
Hulk Hogan
Haku
Jim Neidhart
Bushwhacker Luke
Brian Knobbs of the Nasty Boys
The Warlord
Tugboat
Lots of fresh faces in the 1991 Rumble: Roma, Von Erich, Atlas, Undertaker, Davey Boy, Douglas, Crush of Demolition, the Legion of Doom, Brian Knobbs of the Nasty Boys.
Taker clearly isn’t “Taker” yet as he only eliminated one wrestler and was easily eliminated by the Legion of Doom.
Hogan won his second Rumble (boring).
I said the 1990 Rumble was the most depressing when it came to deceased wrestlers but 1991 surpassed it: only 9 participants of the Rumble have passed but if you include the non-wrestlers/wrestlers in the undercard the total number is 21. Looking forward to a Rumble where the deceased count is less than five.
Rating: 5 out of 10
