A couple of the Australian rock musicians are like their peers outside. Sebastian Hardie, for instance, could've been on a tour with Mike Oldfield and Steve Winwood's Go, yet their reach didn't go much beyond Australia. Sadly, one might add as the band managed to combine the British version of progressive rock with the American one. Still, they sounded closer to the former than the latter, which you can hear on the link. To be honest, Mike Oldfield does feel like the closest comparison to them in the terms of their soundscapes, but they favoured a more progressive rock sound than him. Sure, Oldfield was like the style I mentioned, though his folk rock was more pronounced than anything else, whereas Sebastian Hardie felt closer to, say, Yes than anything else.

A priest with a gun sets the scene in TV’s newest ‘whydunit’

The story starts with a bang. A priest in his white and purple robes strides out of a country-town church with a rifle – yes, a priest with a rifle – and starts shooting parishioners, leaving five of them dead. Father Byron Swift is then himself shot dead in self-defence by the local copper. Thus begins the saga of Scrublands, a new mini-series set in regional Australia – and obviously there’s no mystery about whodunit.

In fact, at first there’s no mystery about anything at all. The priest had recently been accused of paedophilia, and the official explanation is that he got himself killed rather than face up to the crime. But then, a year later, burnt-out Sydney Morning Herald journalist Martin Scarsden arrives in town to write a perfunctory story about how the town is faring 12 months on, and starts to smell a rat.
Based on former journalist Chris Hammer’s best-selling novel of the same name, Scrublands is a thriller set in a remote country town, Riversend, which has been battered by years of drought, fire and flood, is reeling from a terrible act of violence, and harbours a profound distrust of outsiders generally, and anyone in the media specifically.
Producer David Redman, whose credits include Charlie & Boots and Strange Bedfellows, says distilling the novel, a whydunit rather than a whodunit, into a four-part series is no mean feat. “It’s amazing how much story you can tell in four episodes,” he says. “It’s pacy. No one’s going to fall asleep in this one, particularly not after the opening scene. It’s such an iconic and unusual way to start, as far as making sure you have an engaged, attentive audience.”
Writer Felicity Packard (Underbelly, Janet King) agrees. “The opening scene is pretty much what takes place in the novel. That’s a really powerful way to start. You’re not hiding your light under a bushel, it’s right up there in episode one, scene one.”

Director Greg McLean has form when it comes to filming Australian crime drama. His CV includes the legendary outback horror flick Wolf Creek. Packard enthuses about his vision. “He has such a strong idea of what he’s doing. He’s already got the edit in his head, so he know what he’s shooting for. He doesn’t just shoot the shit out of things, he knows what he wants.”
The story revolves around two men, the charismatic and dedicated but mysterious priest Byron, played by Jay Ryan (The Creamerie, Jane Campion’s Top of the Lake) and the jaded, frustrated journalist Martin, played by Luke Arnold (Michael Hutchence in INXS biopic Never Tear Us Apart). Linking the two is Mandy Bond, played by Bella Heathcote (The Man in the High Castle, Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows), the beguiling owner of the local bookstore-cafe who has a few secrets of her own.

It was McLean who introduced Heathcote to the project. “I’d worked with him on Bloom [with Bryan Brown and Jacki Weaver] a couple of years ago and he and I were going to do another project together and that didn’t happen sadly, and he said, ‘I’ve got this other great project.’ He sent me the first two episodes, and I was hooked, I wanted to know what happened next.”
Heathcote’s character, who had studied at uni in Melbourne before returning to look after her dying mother, fascinated the actor. “Mandy just seems so tough and cool. No bullshit, the way she carries herself through life, the way she interacts with people in the town. I just really admired her. So often she has those quips I wish I had in any given situation!”
Instinctively playing her cards close to her chest, Mandy has to decide if she can trust the journalist who’s just shown up in town. Martin, meanwhile, is reassessing his commitment to unearthing the truth after an investigative story that spun horribly out of control.
“Martin is someone who was jet setting around the world righting wrongs, bringing justice to the world,” Arnold says. “This truth is so important that you know, if I’m going to hurt a few people along the way, it’s worth it if the story gets out.”
“There’s been the tragedy of a massacre happening here and the media stomping around, and is Martin going to contribute to that, or through setting the story straight can he help give this town a new future?”
The other main character in the story is the fictional town of Riversend. Film crews worked on location around Maldon, near Bendigo, and at the more remote Nyah West, up in the Mallee. “The advantage we have over the book is we can show things,” says Redman. “So visually, I don’t know if it’s literally a thousand words per image but we are definitely able to express the sense of isolation very quickly through what we show.”
The town author Chris Hammer created is inherently cinematic, Arnold says. “The idea of the kind of isolated town that was really wrecked by the event, picking up the pieces, so lent itself to screen”, Arnold says. “These key moments, these key locations, the bookstore-cafe being the centrepiece for a bit of romance.
“This was a beautiful country town, there was the chance for a flourishing community, but what happens when a town gets tarred with this, all people now think of when they hear Riversend is this awful massacre. If you’re a business owner, if you’re a local, if your family has grown up here what does this do to yourself, your future, your investment in your community and your family?”
There’s always the temptation, Redman says, to make films in studios, citing his movies Charlie and Boots and Strange Bedfellows, both starring Paul Hogan, as examples that benefited hugely from breaking out and working on location. On this production, recent floods gave them plenty of detail to work with. “In Baringhup [near Maldon] there was a caravan park we were using for some of the scenes. In October last year it was 2 metres under water so all the caravans were ruined, these were people’s houses. We could’ve created that visually on a backlot somewhere, but you wouldn’t have got the same feeling that these are people’s homes.”
Also, filming on location can produce moments of visual serendipity. Packard recalls a scene where Martin is talking to the sympathetic local cop Robbie (played by Adam Zwar). “At the end of the scene Robbie’s left sitting on a park bench. Greg McLean didn’t call ‘cut’ straight away, just waited to see what the actors might do. The actors didn’t do anything, but a flock of 200 corellas came swooping down and circled around him and then took off. The whole crew just gasped.”
With its dramatic scenery and the increasingly murky activities of the townsfolk, the series has all the hallmarks of an Australian thriller, but still, the heroes, villains and victims of this tale are not the usual suspects. “There’s an awful lot of stories about young women being killed,” says Packard. ”Not that it’s great to see five men being shot dead, but we’re doing something quite different there, it’s a different sort of crime.”
Scrublands premieres on Stan on November 16.

Chapter 115: Only You
Imagine a world where everything you thought to be fiction or myth turned out to be real. Imagine a world, larger than life, where Gods ruled, a simple kiss from a Prince really could wake a Princess, and the lines between good and evil were not as defined as one might think. Imagine that all the stories you think you know so well turned out to be much different than you thought. Imagine if magic was as real as science. Imagine if you didn't have to imagine any of that and it was all true…
"This is what you have so far?" Greg asked, as a barrage of real footage they had collected and images they had captured played on the screen after Landon's voice over ended.
"Yeah...it's great, don't you think?" he asked.
"It looks like a movie trailer. No one is going to think it's anything other than that," Greg complained, as he paced the room.
"I can't believe that three years of work and this is what we have," he growled.
"Hey...this is good. We have some really damning footage of real magic being performed and real life depictions of actual people that are thought to be fictional characters," Landon admonished.
"That no one will believe!" Greg argued.
"After three years...we have nothing! My father's bones are buried in the FBI crime lab, because no one cares about a thirty-three year old crime! And you've just made a fancy movie trailer that I'm sure any Hollywood studio would love to fund, but I have nothing!" Greg raged.
"Calm down...we can take a different approach with the footage. Maybe I got a bit cinematic with the voice over," Landon agreed.
"You think?" Greg snapped. Landon sighed.
"The crime lab is still our in with all of this. I know it's been a long time, but they will get back to us. They'll get a match. They may already have, but opening a cold case will have to go through proper channels. But that's good for us," he continued.
"How?" Greg asked.
"Because if they do match your DNA to the remains and identify him as your missing father...that will attract the attention of some of the higher ups. Opening a cold case that's over thirty years old doesn't happen every day," Landon replied. Greg sighed.
"Fine...just do something about that silly voice over," he said.
"Relax…I'll get rid of the voice over and turn on the regular audio. Maybe if we just go with the bare bones footage, people will see that it's completely unedited," Landon replied, as they watched some of the unedited footage.
"I just want her to pay…" Greg growled.
"I mean...she killed my father, but they allowed her to remain free and move on. All this bull about how she's redeemed herself and even found love! It's ridiculous! She deserves to be in prison!" Greg ranted.
"I agree with you...and maybe we can take a different strategy," Landon said.
"Like what?" Greg asked.
"Well...we've managed to acquire a few beans without them knowing over the years. Hell, they've grown so many that they'd never miss them even if we took a bushel. Maybe it's time to go to the FBI and make them listen. Maybe it's time to find a way to make her confess. We get her outside Storybrooke...there's no magic there to protect any of them," Landon replied.
"How are we going to do that?" Greg asked.
"She has a son...she has someone she loves now. We can use them to get her to do whatever we want," Landon replied.
"We'd have to lure them away from the rest," Greg reminded.
"Not easy...but not impossible either," Landon surmised.
"Okay...let's do it. Let's make her confess and then take her to them," Greg agreed.
"Great...in the meantime, I'll shop this tape around the Internet. No credible documentary company will pay it any mind. But on the dark web...that will be a different story. If we can get people talking about it...then eventually, it will go viral," Landon said.
~*~
Snow's emerald eyes opened and she smiled, as she found herself firmly ensconced in her husband's arms.
"Good morning," he said in a husky tone, as they shared a kiss.
"Good morning handsome," she purred back, as he held her close and they heard some babbling coming from the baby monitor.
"Sounds like someone else is awake," she mentioned. He smiled and kissed her cheek.
"I'll get her," he said, as he ventured off to the adjoining nursery. She heard their bedroom door open at that point and smiled at the sound of tiny feet beating it toward the bed. She leaned over and pretended to jump in surprise.
"Boo!" little Xander exclaimed and Snow gasped, as she helped him climb onto their large, King sized bed.
"Good morning sweetheart," she cooed, as she settled him in her lap and kissed his blonde haired head.
"Morning mommy…" he cooed in return, as he was focused on playing with the toys he had brought with him. About that time, David returned with their baby. Ten months ago, Snow had given birth to their third child, a little girl they decided to name Iris. While their son had inherited David's coloring in hair and eyes, their second daughter had very fine raven colored hair like Snow and David's blue eyes as well.
"Daddy!" Xander called, as David sat down on the bed with them and let the baby crawl between them, while his son jumped into his arms.
"What do you have there, little man?" he asked, as he noticed the toy horse in his hand.
"Horsie," he replied, as his baby sister had crawled into Snow's lap. David had changed her, but she was ready to nurse. He helped her settle down in bed and she began to nurse their daughter. These were their typical mornings, spent quietly together, before their daily routine would set in. They ruled together equally. David spent much of his time overseeing the defense side of their Kingdom and Sheriffing all the Realms with Emma, which he greatly enjoyed. Snow handled the day to day tasks on the diplomatic side, though there were many meetings they attended together, especially when military officials visited from other Kingdoms.
During the day, Ruth, Serafina, and Robert happily watched their grandchildren, as did Hades, Persephone, and Eli when their ruling duties allowed it. But Snow and David's children weren't the only ones keeping their six grandparents busy. There had been many changes to their family and it had grown in more ways than one.
"You go ahead and clean up first. And then we can switch," Snow said.
"You sure?" he asked. She nodded and cuddled the baby and their son, who was very occupied with his toys.
"Okay...then I'll get the munchkins dressed while you clean up. Then we'll go get breakfast," he said, as he kissed her tenderly.
"Granny's?" Xander asked. David chuckled.
"Yeah...we'll go to Granny's," he agreed.
"I want pancakes," he announced.
"Mmm...pancakes sound good. With blueberries," Snow said.
"No...chocolate chip, like Emmy has," Xander replied, making them chuckle.
"Okay...chocolate chip it is," Snow agreed, as he smiled at them and went to shower.
~*~
James looked out over his Kingdom from the balcony of the King's bed chambers. It was almost mind boggling how much his life had changed in the last three years since he had been miraculously resurrected. He was sure now that if Cronus knew for certain that he couldn't count on James' loyalty, he probably wouldn't have chosen to bring him back. But the God of Time had much bigger problems than him. He didn't know much about Cronus' original plan, except it had involved eliminating Zeus and then claiming the power of the skies. But that power had chosen Persephone as its new champion and had almost guaranteed that Cronus would never rise to power. He had settled into ruling his own Kingdom for the last three years and while they would always be leery of him, he was not the biggest threat out there.
After Leopold unfairly took back his own Kingdom, James had opened his castle to Regina and Henry, giving them a place to stay close. While they could have returned to the mansion in Storybrooke, Regina knew Henry wanted to be close to his biological family and Regina was sincerely working on repairing her relationship with Snow; much to his sister-in-law's delight.
It was a surprising thing to see Regina and Snow become good friends, especially after all the bad blood between them. But Regina had really committed to becoming a better person, for herself and for Henry. He understood her journey better than anyone, so it probably shouldn't have surprised them when they fell in love. But they did and after the shock had worn off, they had entered into a loving relationship, one like he had never had and never expected to have. And one she like she hadn't experienced since Daniel, except for what she found with James became far more powerful. With Daniel, it had been true love, but quite innocent and unburdened. But with James, they both still had darkness in them and would always struggle with it. But among all that, they had found kindred spirits in one another and ultimately a love neither of them expected or was even looking for, or so they thought.
"Why are you up?" Regina complained sleepily, as she put her arms around his waist and rested her head against his back. He smirked and turned so he could put one arm around her.
"Sorry...you know I get this way before we have big diplomatic meetings with the other Kingdoms," he said.
"Yeah...I kind of miss the days where I could just storm in and they would agree to whatever I want," she mused.
"This democracy thing definitely comes with more bickering than I like and having to be in a room with Midas and Leopold for hours makes me want to drink," he agreed. She smirked.
"Well...we still have a while until we have to be ready. I can give you something to think about during the meeting," she purred. He smirked and turned to her, as they engaged in a passionate kiss.
"We're supposed to meet everyone for breakfast," he reminded, as she led him back inside.
"Henry is with Emma and Neal so we can be a little late," she replied, as he eagerly followed her back to bed.
~*~
Henry sat in front of the television that morning in their sitting room, playing video games, while his parents shuffled around. The blonde baby girl in Neal's arms fussed a bit, while he dug through her diaper bag.
"Henry...have you seen Tallie's stuffed unicorn?" Neal asked.
"Nope," the teen replied and Neal rolled his eyes.
"Then stop playing the game and help me look. You know how fussy she gets without it," he said. Henry paused the game and started to look around, before finding it behind the sofa.
"Hey...big brother to the rescue," Neal said, as he showed their six-month-old daughter the stuffed toy. She grabbed onto it with chubby hands and calmed down, allowing him to put her in the stroller, as Emma came downstairs.
"Okay...let's go have breakfast and then we'll get you off to school, kid. Do you have your homework?" Emma asked.
"Yep," Henry replied, as he grabbed his backpack and turned the television off.
"Hey sweetheart...are you giving Daddy a rough time?" Emma cooed to their daughter.
"Like her mother," Neal deadpanned.
"Please...you love it," she said, nudging her fiance.
"Yeah...I do. I probably should have my head examined," he joked.
"Wouldn't do any good. No doctor can fix you," she joked back.
"Haha," he mocked sarcastically.
"Are we going or not? I'm starving," Henry complained.
"You're fourteen. You're always starving," Neal quipped, as he pushed the stroller out and they walked through one of Hades insta-portals, as they had come to call them, and arrived in front of Granny's for breakfast.
~*~
"Okay sweetie...there all cleaned up," Belle cooed, as she blew a raspberry on her little boy's tummy and he giggled. Rumple smiled from the doorway of the nursery in their castle.
"Everything in order?" he asked.
"Oh yes...we just had a bit of a diaper emergency. I don't think we'll be having anymore strained apricots for dinner anymore," she replied, as she finished dressing him and picked him up.
"You know, I could have cleaned him up with a wave of my hand," he quipped. She shot him a look.
"And I told you I don't want you changing Gideon's diapers with magic," she chided.
"Fine...but can I at least get rid of the dirty one?" he countered.
"Now that would be okay," she agreed, as the dirty diaper disappeared. She looked at him suspiciously.
"Where do all those dirty diapers go when you poof them away?" she asked. He shrugged.
"Who says that I don't just disintegrate them?" he answered with his own question.
"Because the other day, when we were at Snow's and David's, you made one disappear and Hades seemed to think it was funny," she responded. He smirked.
"Do you really want to know?" he asked. She rolled her eyes.
"You're right...it's probably best that I don't," she replied, as she handed their son to him and got his diaper bag. An insta-portal opened and they stepped through, arriving in front of Granny's.
~*~
"Ohhh...there they are. Come to Nana…" Persephone gushed, as Snow and David arrived at Granny's with the little ones.
"Nana!" Alexander called, as he rushed to her and she lifted him into her lap.
"Hello my handsome boy," she cooed, while Hades poofed a stuffed three-headed dog for him to play with you.
"You three spoil them rotten," Snow admonished, as she hugged her father.
"That is what Grandparents are for," Eli said, as eagerly took his tiny granddaughter in his arms. Snow shook her head in amusement and sat down beside her husband. Since her father's royal role these days was simply as an adviser, he had been very happy. The stress she had seen upon him while she was growing up, at least in the alternate reality, was gone and for that, she was very happy for him. Surprisingly to some, Hades was happy ruling beside her mother and gladly maintained his supportive role to her. He had naturally worried about his former Throne and who was taking care of the dead. It was very big job and one he took seriously. He regretted the years where he had ruled unjustly, but when they managed to learn that Prometheus had exited Elysian to take up the mantle, that had been a relief to him. Prometheus was a fair man and had always been an ally to mortals, being that he had gone against Zeus long ago when he gave fire to mortals. He had paid for it dearly, but had been rewarded a hero's afterlife in Elysian by Hades, centuries ago, much to Zeus' chagrin.
Persephone had proven equally that her new role as God of the Skies was very well suited to her as well. The last three years in the United Realms had yielded peace and for that, Snow was incredibly grateful. There were still conflicts, crime, and the normal day to day strife that any society faced, but peace had mostly reigned.
"Hey…" Emma called, as they were the next to arrive.
"Hey sweetie," Snow said, as she hugged her parents, while David eagerly lifted Tallie out of her stroller.
"Hey there peanut…" he cooed and patted his grandson on the arm.
"Oh...that reminds me," David said. Snow smiled and dug out some comic books from the pocket on their stroller.
"Wow...thanks Gramps," Henry said, as he accepted the gift.
"And Nana and Papa didn't forget you, sweetie," Snow cooed, as they presented her with a new stuffed sheep.
"You seriously just lectured us about spoiling our grandchildren," Hades mentioned. Snow smiled at him.
"Well, like you said...it's what grandparents do," she mused.
"Grandparents usually don't have kids the same age as their grand kids though," Emma teased.
"You shush and Iris got a new stuffed toy too when we picked out one for Tallie," Snow replied, as Rumple and Belle were next to arrive with Gideon.
"Hey…sorry, we're a bit late. We had to change clothes already this morning," Belle mentioned. Snow winced.
"We've had those mornings too," she replied. Gideon and Iris were only about a month apart. Snow and Belle had gotten pregnant nearly at the same time and being pregnant together had made them even closer friends. It had served to do the same for David and Rumple as well.
"Sorry we're late…" Regina said, as she and James finally arrived and she kissed Henry on his head, as they sat down.
"It's okay...our order is already in," Snow said.
"How do you know what I want?" Regina replied.
"Apple pancakes, mom...you're kind of predictable," Henry teased, making James chuckle in amusement. She nudged him.
"Very funny, you...new comics?" she asked. He smiled and slid one over to her.
"Yep," he answered, as she opened it to read, while they waited on breakfast and conversation flowed effortlessly as usual when they all managed to get together. Robert, Ruth, and Serafina arrived last, completing their family gathering, just as breakfast was delivered.
~*~
Ravenna paced in the secluded chamber of her palace, where Claude Frollo had conducted his work and experiments for the past three years. It was painstaking work and she felt no closer to any of her goals. If she didn't hold control over him, then she might think he wasn't doing what she asked. But unfortunately, the particular thing she was asking for was not easily accomplished.
Originally, she had wanted to find a way to curse her former step-daughter. She wanted her to suffer a fate worse than death, but she had quickly learned that there was no curse that existed that true love could not overcome. It became clear that death was the only thing that true love could not save her from. And so the search to find the perfect way to kill Snow White began. She wanted her to suffer and she wanted those around her to suffer losing her. She was so tired of her being the one that all the Kingdoms adored. She had everything. True love with a handsome, loving husband, who thought the sun rose and set with her. Three beautiful children and a large family full of people that would do absolutely anything for her. In addition to that, most of the people in the Kingdoms, particularly her own adored her and still called her the fairest of them all.
Her jealousy had steadily grown and her hatred with it. Hans had implored her to let it go, as he could see nothing good coming of it for their Kingdom. His older brothers agreed as well, but with Arawn still imprisoned for war crimes, Ravenna was next in line and had ruled flippantly. Her own interests were first, while the people did without. She was a very unpopular Queen and their own people constantly discussed how much better the rulers of some of other Kingdoms were. Snow White was always mentioned among them, which only further enraged their sister.
But Ravenna refused to work for her people in favor of fulfilling her own interests. She was always harshly criticized at the United Realm Council meetings and Hans was sure today would be no different.
"We may finally be onto something today," Frollo said.
"You've said that before and it always goes up in smoke," Ravenna retorted.
"And without this cauldron, you may never have gotten this far," he argued.
"Fine...do you have it then?" she asked.
"Not yet...but my research has revealed one crucial ingredient we need for success. Unfortunately, it is not available in our Enchanted Forest," he replied.
"Then where can we get what we need?" she demanded to know.
"Another magical forest...across the ocean," he answered. She had heard of this place and could even see it in the distance from her vantage point. It was still a mysterious place and the only place that had not sent a dignitary to join the United Realms Council. Very little was known about it still and there were even plans to send a group of diplomats there to make contact. No one was certain of why no one from this land had sent their own individuals out, but they had so far respected their obvious desire to remain isolated. If they still planned to send a team, she knew they would never choose to send her. They were always claiming she was too volatile and had an irresponsible rule. But that would not stop her from going there if the ingredient she needed was somewhere in that forest.
"Then we will leave for this new land, in secret, after today's Council meeting," she decided.
"Yes, my Queen," Frollo agreed, though he had little choice. As long as she held the Promethean flame, the very first and famed flame the God Prometheus had given to man, she would be able to control his every move.
~*~
Breakfast was finishing up and they paid their checks, while preparing to hand off all the little ones to Ruth, Robert, and Serafina, who were happily watching all of them, while they were attending the monthly Council meeting that morning.
"Okay kid...bus is pulling up outside," Emma said, as she hugged him and Regina did as well, as she kissed him on the head. He and Neal bumped fists, as he headed out to the bus
"Have a good day sweetie," Snow called, as he waved to his family. Just as they prepared to head back to the castle, Emma's phone rang.
"Sheriff," she answered, as she listened to the complaint on the other end.
"All right...we'll be right there," she said, with an eye roll.
"Another active bar fight at the Rabbit Hole," she said, as she put her jacket on.
"I'll give you a hand," David said, as he kissed Snow quickly.
"I'll catch up to you at the meeting," he promised. She nodded.
"Be careful," she called to both of them.
"Need an extra hand?" James asked.
"Couldn't hurt," David agreed, as his twin kissed Regina and followed them out. Snow smiled, as she watched her husband and daughter do what they did best. Helping and protecting people. She kissed her little ones and Ruth smiled at her.
"Off to save the day again, those two," she said fondly.
"As always. Thanks for watching them," Snow said.
"You know we love it," Seraphina replied. To have the three of them to help out was invaluable. Snow was not a fan of hiring a nanny and since her children had so many grandparents to help out, such had not be necessary.
"Well, I guess we better get to the Council meeting," she said, as they left the diner as well. She couldn't say that they ever accomplished a lot in their meetings, but they were still important to get all the leaders together in order to discuss the issues. She always hoped for less arguing and more solutions, which she did not always receive. Thus was the reality of politics. David usually got even more annoyed than her, for her husband was always one for action. But the diplomacy and this process were important and necessary, even if the results were slow to be realized most of the time. But she felt that the future had never been brighter as far as she was concerned and she only hoped that their relative peace continued to reign...

Las Vegas. The city that never sleeps, though you wouldn’t know that in this part of town. Far from the strip, away from the bright neon lights and casinos, a silence looms over the dark side of the moon. Fog is beginning to spread its way through every street, every alleyway, every crack of the neglected shadow of sin city. There are no stars in the sky tonight, only bushels of clouds.
After the triple homicide I just closed, the droplets of a light drizzle offer a sort of catharsis, though the real comfort will come later at home with him by my side.
The history of this city, coupled with a new appeal for the aesthetics of noir-style mystery movies has caught my attention as of late. Over the past year, a lot of things have changed within me. All of us have changed, really, since the...incident last summer. But he’s changed most of all, though that’s not a surprise. Perhaps that’s why he agreed to come over and watch movies that came out before either of us were born.
“Control, this is Charlie-O-3 Stokes, shots fired, in pursuit of three suspects--”
Gunshots snap, crackle and pop through the speakers on the radio. For a moment, I freeze, slamming my foot on the brakes, not caring that my car is stopped in the middle of a deserted intersection. The once comforting silence is now filled with dread and paranoia, did he get shot?
“Charlie-O-3 Stokes, Control, Respond,”
More gunshots before his voice speaks through the radio, with increased ferocity and speed.
“Three suspects, armed--black van, license plate: Zoey Delta Zero--FU--”
Two more gunshots, and then Nick speaks again, his tone is flat, defeated.
“Control, suspects’ vehicle turned left onto Charleston. They have CSI Warrick Brown.”
The front of the lab is swarming with alternating red and blue lights by the time I arrive. I jump out of my vehicle, eyes scanning the swarming crowd for Nick--hopefully he wasn’t stupid enough to try and follow the suspects on foot.
Sara Sidle spots me, waving her hand in the air for me to come over, but she didn’t need to. I could see Nick’s head above everyone else’s, though his square jaw is pointed to the ground, his head hung in some sort of shame. A wave of relief falls through my body that they’re standing next to a light post and not an ambulance. Sofia stands next to them, jotting down notes in a notebook. Nick is recounting the events of the shooting, eyes closed, face scrunched in concentration.
“Next thing I know, lab’s covered in smoke, fire alarms’ going off, I was on the ground, trying to catch my breath...I remember seein’ Warrick in the Trace lab, trying to pull something outta one of the suspect’s arms. Another guy ran in, tried to knock him out, but Warrick wrestled him off, managed to get the guy’s gas mask and put it on himself. Then, all three of them ran out, the last guy joined ‘em, I was able to catch my breath and tried to get one of ‘em on their way out--”
He lifts up his right hand, a blood soaked bandage over his knuckles.
“Couldn’t see the face, I think I got ‘em in the mask. I ran outta the building and they started firin’ at me and Sara--we fired back. I fired...maybe...five shots? Warrick--uh, Warrick, he...got into the back of the van with two of the guys, the other got in through the passenger’s side. I called it in, tried to get their license plate, only got three digits--Zoey Delta Zero--and...here we are.”
“Thanks, Nick. Sara, anything to add? Were you able to get a clear view of the license plate?”
“No, I was just on my way in when the suspects ran out. I couldn’t get a clear view of the license plate, I had dodged a few bullets behind that red car parked over there...I saw them turn onto Charleston, and that was it.”
“Okay, thanks, guys. I’ll keep you posted...we’ll find him.”
Multitude of questions about the events Nick described swirl in my head, but I start with the most important one.
“Are you guys okay?”
Sara nods, then mutters something about calling Grissom while Nick finally lifts his head up, his eyes are red, his hands are still shaking.
“Yea-yeah, Greg, we’re fine,” Nick sighs. He puts his hand on my shoulder to reassure me, but the amount of pressure he puts on tells me he’s not exactly “fine.”
“I couldn’t stop them.”
“You did the right thing, calling it in--”
“But I should have stopped them, Greg! I just--”
He twists away, pacing a little back and forth, before unleashing his pent up anger on the trunk of the nearest police cruiser. I lifted my hand in an awkward, apologetic wave to a passing officer.
His back rises and falls like a balloon being filled with air, I could hear him attempt to steady his deep, shaky breathing. I’m reminded of the McBride case, how he stormed out of the police station after an intense interrogation. I place my hand on his shoulder, just as I did then.
“You did the right thing, man,” I repeat, squeezing my hand, as if to squeeze up the tension from his body like a sponge. It seems to work, the leather on his jacket loosens as his shoulder falls from my fingers.
He nods and looks back at me, a single tear sliding down his cheek before he quickly wipes it away. But there was no hiding the despair in his eyes. You’d have to be blind not to see the bond that Nick and Warrick have, a bond that was nearly severed last summer with the threat on Nick’s life. I saw firsthand how it tore Warrick apart, and now I’m seeing the other side of the coin.

The past few months have been rough for Texas—and for the Texas Republican Party in particular. Republicans in the state led the charge to overturn the 2020 election results, centering their anti-democratic arguments on fantasies of stolen ballots and smothered voices. Then, a once-in-a-generation winter storm revealed the extent to which years-long GOP control had rotted the state’s infrastructure, providing a searing illustration of collapse that gripped the news-cycle and the nation. (And leading to Sen. Ted Cruz tucking tail for Cancun.) Just last week, Gov. Greg Abbott—in a fit of “neanderthal thinking,” as President Joe Biden said—launched a premature lifting of the state’s mask mandate, setting the stage for new Covid variants to wash across the population, the potential for new casualties of a pandemic the rest of the country is finally obtaining the upper hand over, and new reasons for voters who may be tilting in their partisan preferences to consider ousting the governor when he’s up for reelection in two years.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the state’s GOP—mimicking its national counterpart—has responded to these cascading failures not with sound policy proposals, but with a bushel of distractions related to America’s never-ending culture wars. The state’s oleaginous lieutenant governor has led the way, proposing legislation that would force publicly-funded entities and events to perform the national anthem. The Texas Republican Party’s official headquarters, hurdling headlong into cognitive dissonance, endorsed the first serious secession bill the country has seen since the Civil War. That measure has since picked up multiple Republican sponsors in the House.
All of which brings us to the latest front that Texas Republicans have launched in their war on reality. This month, one Texas Republican House member filed legislation to force the creation of a new project for supposedly “patriotic education.” Calling for the formation of an “1836 Project,” named after the year Texas declared independence from Mexico, the bill models itself after former President Donald Trump’s ill-starred “1776 Project.” Trump’s efforts—which barely lasted a week before the new administration obliterated it wholesale—were themselves a response to the New York Times’ “1619 Project,” which re-centered slavery and human bondage in the story of colonial America.
According to Rep. Tan Parker, the legislator who filed the bill, the proposal is “exclusively about celebrating Texas.” As Parker contended, “Many of our children are taught to denounce Texas history and do not understand what it means to be a virtuous citizen.” It’s unclear what Parker has in mind when he describes “virtuous” citizens, but it’s clear that the ultimate aim of the project is to simply whitewash Texas’s past of any critiques about the central role human enslavement played in the Texas Revolution. “It’s about reasserting whiteness and focusing on when white people ‘founded’ this state,” University of North Texas Professor Amanda Vickery told The Dallas Morning News.
Vickery has this correct. Parker’s paeans to “patriotic education” are little more than a smokescreen for reinforcing the kinds of myths and legends about the Texas Revolution that have played down slavery’s central, essential role in breaking the state off from Mexico. But if Parker wants to paper over the role of race and revolution in Texas—and to try to parley these myths to a new generation of Texas students—the least we can do is highlight just how the Republic of Texas became arguably the most anti-Black, and most avowedly white supremacist, country to have ever existed.
A few years before Texians, the term given to those who resided in the state at the time, launched their independence movement against the Mexican government in 1836, officials in Mexico City launched an historic salvo of their own. Decades before their counterparts in Washington, Mexican President Vicente Guerrero issued a proclamation: Mexico, Guerrero announced in 1829, would abolish slavery.
While abolitionists celebrated the decree (and rightly perceived it as a precedent that would eventually sweep through the rest of North America), the Anglos flooding into northeast Mexico stood shocked. Enticed by the region’s fertile cotton lands, white settlers from the U.S. had blanketed the region, looking to replicate the slave-centered economic boom in other parts of the American South. Led by those like the Austin family, Anglos pegged economic success in the Mexican region of Texas to a single commodity: enslaved humans. “Keeping slavery legal was a key component of the success of Moses Austin’s settlement; Anglo settlement of Mexican Texas would not have happened without it,” Emily McCullar wrote for The Texas Monthly. Following Guerrero’s decree, Anglos were “aghast.” As The Houston Chronicle summed, Stephen F. Austin, Moses’s son, was clear: “Texas could not survive without slavery.”
Those like Austin were clear; as the Texan founding father staked in 1833, “Texas must be a slave country.”
Led by the younger Austin, Anglos managed to lobby Mexican officials for a carve-out to allow them to continue enslaving thousands of Black residents, forcing them to work the cotton fields against their wills. (“The scheme simply redefined slavery as debt peonage,” the Chronicle continued.) But a seed had been planted, and Anglo slavers began worrying about their ability to extract wealth from those they enslaved. Those like Austin were clear; as the Texan founding father staked in 1833, “Texas must be a slave country.”
A few years later, the piling tinder gave way to revolution. While there was plenty of room for complaint about Mexican leader Santa Anna—the self-styled “Napoleon of the West” was hardly a democrat—demands for revolution caught fire amongst those with the most to lose: slaveholders. “The fact that calls for revolt bubbled up among Texans in the primary slave-holding region is no coincidence,” the Chronicle wrote. Thanks in no small part to Santa Anna’s incompetence, the Texians and Tejanos linking arms managed, over the course of a few short months, to steal independence from an anti-slavery republic.
Around the same time, legislators in Texas began hammering out a new constitution for the breakaway region—a constitution that, in language clear as any, illustrates how the Republic of Texas became the first true slave empire in the Americas, surpassing even the United States. Indeed, while modern Texas Republicans like to view the Texas Revolution as a spiritual successor to the American Revolution, it’s far more accurate to describe it as a precursor to the Confederacy. To wit, the Texas Constitution explicitly prohibited its new government from ever emancipating slaves. Moreover, the constitution expressly barred any Texan from freeing other humans they enslaved, unless they pledged to evict them from the new nation entirely. “No free person of African descent, either in whole or in part, shall be permitted to reside permanently in the Republic, without the consent of Congress,” their Constitution read, effectively assuring that Texian slaveholders would never have to worry about free Black residents.
This language had an immediate impact on both the state’s economy and on the swelling ranks of those enslaved on these shores. In less than a decade of independence, the numbers of Black residents enslaved exploded, growing some 500 percent. And the driving force for the race into American embrace – the U.S. annexed Texas in 1845—likewise centered on slavery. Texians knew full well that a regrouped Mexico could steamroll the slave republic, and enforce its abolitionist writ on the region once more. The only thing saving Texians’ ability to enslave other humans was joining the United States. But even that effort eventually faltered. Just fifteen years after annexation, Texas once more declared its intent to secede – this time, as part of yet another would-be slave empire. As Texas’s 1861 declaration of secession made clear, the state existed as “a commonwealth holding, maintaining and protecting the institution known as negro slavery – the servitude of the African to the white race.”

Ten incomplete thoughts on UFC 216
Due to work, I missed the main card except for the main event which I managed to get home in time for. Anyways here’s what I got based off of the prelims and the FX card.
1- Demetrious Johnson is our ugly baby
This is a Jerry Jones-ism so forgive me but I think it fits if you think about it. Have you ever seen a couple that just had a baby---and the baby's ugly? To everyone on the outside, the baby is absolutely hideous looking but to THEM, to those parents, it's the most beautiful thing ever because its THEIR baby. Demetrious Johnson is our ugly baby. For some fight fans and casual consumers, Demetrious Johnson is a midget who has boring fights against limited competition with a weird personality. He lacks a demographic, a definable fanbase by which an organization can capitalize on his gifts. He's destined to be the guy or the man who fight fans have no interest in. His mere PRESENCE on a card or an event signifies skippable to them. He is almost a fan repellant at this point. He is, in many ways, an ugly baby.
But he's our ugly baby. He's the best fighter in the world as of right now. Where as other see boring fights over limited competition; we see dominant performances vs good fighters who would be great in a world where he doesn't exist. Whereas they see the hit but don't get hit style as boring, we see endless activity through a variety of channels designed to minimize risk BUT still promote action. He finishes fights. He challenges himself to be better. His dominant reign has never featured two fights alike and while you can be bored with the dominance, it's still dominance. It's still one man dominating a host of opponents of various shapes, sizes and styles. All of which unique, all of which remind you that what you're seeing is special and what everybody else sees is irrelevant. Who gives a shit if he's an ugly baby, he's YOUR baby.
Mighty Mouse, in a climate where fighting often and fighting consistently on TV isn't really worth as much as it should, will never be respected for what he is. He's our ugly baby; the thing only we can truly appreciate. You just gotta go with it.
2- The Uniqueness of Combat Sports; Good and Bad; was on display.
We begin with the good. The 1 v 1 nature of MMA (and boxing and etc) makes it so much more free flowing as to the how and why we get the matchups. There is no set schedule---so when Derrick Lewis hours before the show can't go? You just get another guy on display! Out comes Walt Harris who had a fight scheduled previously who gets bumped up the card. That's the fun thing about MMA; it's never always laid out to perfection but 9/10, it ends up being just fine. Instead of not getting a Werdum fight, we get Werdum vs Walt Harris on like six hours notice. That's really cool.
And the negative? Well in no other sport would an obvious matchup not happen on account of money. The brackets are what they are, the Yankees and Red Sox don't immediately get to play one another in the ALCS. Who wins is who wins. Tony Ferguson vs Conor McGregor is the fight to make under all categories except for one----which happens to be the biggest one. At the risk of upsetting the Nate Diaz fans, imagine if the Lakers last year took the place of the Spurs to ensure that the NBA would garner the biggest ratings for their playoffs. It'd be stupid---but MMA is a stupid sport sometimes. So we'll sit and wait to determine whether the right title fight will take place or whether the most economical title fight will take place. Either one will do.
3- Mighty should SERIOUSLY think about retiring.
There's a theory that flyweight would've had a better chance of surviving had it not been for Demetrious Johnson, the aforementioned ugly baby of MMA. Let's test that. Mighty Mouse should seriously consider pulling a GSP. Just take off for a while, work on the Fox team/whatever network is next team and provide analysis from a distance. When the opportunity arises for him to come back aka when there's a title fight that makes sense, he should return. Let's see if HE is the problem of it the division itself is a problem.
4- Tony Ferguson is a once in a decade type fighter
No, I don't mean that in the sense that he's a prodigious athlete or some special draw. He's not Conor or Ronda or whomever else has been tabbed with such a label. I'm talking about a guy who is a fighting freak; one of those fucked up type of guys who has these fights that the average human being couldn't fathom and even pro fighters would try to avoid. He began the third round shouting at Kevin Lee about how this was going to be his round and he legit just marched dude down, ate whatever fire was coming his way, got up from takedowns and then when shit got hairy on the ground, he went elbows into armbar into triangle. Tony Ferguson fights with this unrelenting confidence and this air of inevitability. "At some point, I'm going to get you. And when I do? You aren't going to do shit about it." Ferguson isn't just a great fighter, he's a savage sadistic will breaker. You don't see guys like that come along, not in today's MMA where fans think fighters play it safe more than ever before.
5- Greg Jackson had a bad night.
I didn't see any of the main card fights beyond the main event but this goes to the Duquesnoy and the Ray Borg fight. In the former, it felt like any adjustments after the first round were nil for Duquesnoy. Unorthodox only works when fighters are afraid of it and you execute it with near perfection. The unorthodox offense and footwork of Duquesnoy was figured out pretty quickly by Stamman and the adjustments were....I unno. MAYBE Duquesnoy got some great advice and he just didn't execute on it. His third round was abysmal from start to finish and outside of Stamman nearly giving him the fight by virtue of being an idiot, it was not the performance we expected from a top prospect. As for Ray Borg? WHEN has clinching with Mighty Mouse ever worked. I watched a bushel of Demetrious Johnson fights in a row and pointed out that the clinch is where he excels---so Borg clinched and wrestled. Even if Ray Borg isn't a good striker, you have a better chance of starting something on the feet. Furthermore, you HAVE to tell your fighter to never go for the neck on Mighty Mouse. Everytime he takes guys down, they chase that desperation guillo because he feeds it to them. Every single write up I read involved some form of "Borg chases a guillotine" but that never works. NEVER. The gameplan didn't seem to give Borg a single shot. Also felt like Lando Vannata engaged far too much vs Bobby Green BUT I'm not gonna hold dude responsible for that.
6- I think Kevin Lee is making a right choice jumping up to 170 lbs
I made the comparison of Gray Maynard for Kevin Lee at 155 lbs. I think that's still apt---but I think Lee going UP in weight is the right idea. Kevin Lee said he weighed 185 lbs or more vs Tony Ferguson and so that gives you an accurate window of what MOST 155 lbers are weighing after rehydration and etc etc etc. Lee will not be at that big of a size and strength disadvantage vs guys at 170 lbs. Look at how MOST 155ers who have moved up have been able to hold their own vs genuine welterweights. The difference is not that massive and so I figure Lee with better cardio will pop into that top 10 discussion.
7- I need a good reason why there's no 165 and 175 lb divisions
Just curious what the excuses are. I understand it might not curtail weight cuts but it can't hurt for sure. Unless you're going to tell me 185 lbers are going to try to kill themselves to make 175 lbs but if thats a concern, just establish a weight percentage rule. Weigh more than 15% of your intended weight class? Move up or move out! If you're concerned about MMA watering itself down then I mean are you not realizing the quality of talent between 155 lbs and 185 lbs? That's a stupid excuse. The quality of fights will improve because people aren't dying to make weight that intensely. You're at least TRYING something. Two more titles? 99% of you people don't even care who the champ is anyways if he's not a star so how does it impact your ability to enjoy MMA?
8- Brad Tavares is quietly becoming really good.
I've been harsh on Tavares because I feel like he's better than what he's put out recently. Over the past two fights though, he's shown some serious improvements. He's more aggressive while still being his usual composed and patient self. He's got a great jab, he can wrestle with just about anybody. In many ways it felt like he always knew his chin was a little questionable and so he fought to protect that. Recently though it feels like he's more aggressive than usual and that's a good thing. I just think he needs to get that finish which has eluded him so far in the UFC.
9- Magomed Bibulatov losing is a bummer.
Yes yes yes yes. I know. Try to hear me out here for a second will ya? The one thing we keep hearing about guys at 125 lbs is that they're all basically the same guy. The idea that they're all just fighters fighting the most boring guy in the world. Bibulatov had a teensy bit of buzz on him and John Moraga, a dude who at this point is your gatekeeper to the stars, smelted him. Woooof.
10- The Anik, Rogan and Cormier team seemed to have an idea of how to work together.
Don't know if it was the week or whatever the case may be BUT thesse guys were all on their game. Cormier seemed to fit in better and have a better understanding of what he should or should not be calling and their jokes actually seemed to work for once. Most of all, all three guys seemed to be in the zone with very little moments of "Wow that was stupid!" Good night fo rthis new commentary squad.

But the Fed may be pushing at an open door because the industry secretary, Greg Clark, has already said at the Fed’s birthday party in January that the creative industries were “absolutely central” to his thinking. “In my view” he said “it is impossible to separate London’s economic success from its cultural success, from theatre to architecture from music to fashion from design to dance”, the one thing on which he is probably in agreement with Sadiq Khan, the London mayor, who is putting the arts and creative industries at the forefront of his post-Brexit strategy.
In the current AI Khan’s deputy for culture, Justine Simons, says that cultural policy has moved from “being a niche thing into the mainstream”, and that her job standing at the shoulder of the mayor is “embedding culture into everything else we do”. But is the rest of the country in tune with Kampfner, Clark and Khan? Next month there are to be mayoral elections for powerful new satraps in Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, Tees Valley, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, and West of England, with a seventh in Sheffield being voted on next year. One of those likely to be elected, Andy Burnham, is a former culture secretary.
These new mayors, whose writ will run over large tracts, could and should preside over new powerbases that will be able to challenge central government in key policy areas, and for too long the regional creative light has been hidden under bushels of the likes of transport, housing and healthcare. To have credibility with the extra-European trading partners they hope to link up with they will have to do what Khan and Simons already do and push creativity and its potential to the front of their portfolios, and they should figure large in their election manifestos. It is not just the earning power, which is immense, but the expectation of both their constituents now and their business counterparts. “All big cities now know that if they want to be successful they can’t do it without culture” says Justine Simons, who is also chair of the World Cities Culture Forum. “They have to have culture at the heart of their strategy”.

Fridge Analysis
Stonehill,
Help! This is Jack’s fridge. Here’s the deal: I really like him and he makes me laugh. We sleep together, but he hardly calls and when he does, we hardly go out. I understand that he travels a ton, but I’d like to see him more. Basically I don’t know what’s going on, does his Fridge tell you anything?
xoxo
-Lindsey
Stonehill Analysis
Lindsey,
You seem like a sweetheart and I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Greg is as genuine as a 3-dollar bill. He’s not traveling a ton, he just doesn’t want to see you. If he did, he’d call and take you out in public.
We’re here to find the one, so I won’t waste your time with Jack the Jerk-off, and prefer to yank the Band-Aid off quickly.
Lets dive into his fridge. This is a guy who clearly doesn’t leave home much. How do I know? Cause I travel a ton and my fridge doesn’t look like I have enough to survive when the big one hits. Nobody’s left behind this much evidence since OJ, check out the bottom…
I can’t tell you when his bushel of apples was bought, but considering they’re pristine, and without plastic, they’re fresh. His bread in the left drawer is also in good shape and a clear signal he’ll be in town awhile. Buying bread is committing to making sandwiches and/or breakfast at home.
Moving up a shelf, the guy has Tupperware. That’s a pretty domesticated dude. I don’t have Tupperware and I’m married for God’s sake. If he can put enough thought into keeping his shit fresh, he can put enough thought into dialing a freakin’ phone.
Moving up a shelf, look at those sandwiches. They’re less than a day old, and I hope one is for you. If not, he’s having company after you skedaddle. This guy is too damn healthy to down two heroes at once.
Now in defense of you short-changing yourself, I assume Jack has a hard body. There’s a serious amount healthy shit here. I never ever saw a dude with coconut water. Jamie Lee Curtis has less yogurt. The guy’s got game. Almond milk for cereal, skim milk for breakfast and coffee, I’m Impressed. For him, not your prospects.
I don’t even need to get into the bottle of wine and olives, my point is made.
Jack is clearly capable of caring about himself and his comfort, though not your feelings. Now, I’m assuming if you’re sharing your feelings with me, you are with him. (If not, we’ll talk about a good therapist)
Jack is not a bad guy if he doesn’t like you. He’s a bad guy if he’s lying to you. But you’re the one who’s truly at fault here. You dictate the relationship you want to live. If you’re giving Jack everything he needs (i.e.: a good rogering) without getting what you need in return, you’re empowering him to do so.
If you want to see him more, don’t shag him until he sees you more. If you want to be taken out, don’t shag him til he takes you out. Stop giving him what he needs without getting what you need in return. If he stops calling? F’m. Buy a Rabbit and join a tennis league.
If you value yourself less than Happy Hour at Sizzler, that’s what you get…average dudes who want all they can eat for a minimal investment.
Fridge Dating Scorecard
Shag on first date: 8 Considering the guy is probably in great shape and not worthy of being your boyfriend, this is clearly a Bone and Bolt situation.
Marry: 2 The dick won’t even take you out for dinner, Tina Turner saw more chivalry than this.
Sleeping with the Enemy: 3 The guy seems like he has far more fish to fry, but having enough shit in his fridge for a stakeout bumps him up a couple of points.

Anyone who remembers the Iraq War of 2003 remembers Jessica Lynch, the first “American hero” of that conflict. Her convoy had been ambushed behind enemy lines and she was the last soldier alive in her unit, fighting heroically down to her “last bullet” — despite having been shot and stabbed. She was taken prisoner and later rescued by Special Forces in a daring raid.
At least, that was the story the Pentagon told.
Private Jessica Lynch, who joined the Army because she could not afford college.
The truth was very, very different. Yes, Lynch had been injured, but only from the crash of her truck. She never fired a shot. She was taken to a hospital and treated very well. The truth was very, very different. Yes, Lynch had been injured, but only from the crash of her truck. She never fired a shot. She was taken to a hospital and treated very well.
Lynch never understood why the military had to make things up about her. She was no hero, she was just a girl from West Virginia whose dream was to teach kindergarten. Unfortunately for Jessica, her family did not have the money to afford to send her to college to get the degree necessary to become a teacher. The Army, with its tuition payment program, seemed the only way out.
Jessica’s brother had a first-year scholarship and was trying to work, but he didn’t have the money for his second year. But when the Army recruiter came from Parkersburg, all three Lynch kids — Greg, Jessica and Brandi — were interested in what he had to say.
He talked about the travel, and the training they would get. This was the summer of 2001, before there was even a whisper of war in the air. But “he did not lie to the kids,” Dee Lynch says. He said there was always the possibility of war in the future. “But at that time it was before Sept. 11, and there was no terrorism,” Jessica recalls, “so we were like, ‘That would never happen to me.’”
Jessica Lynch was one of the thousands of young Americans who joined the Armed Forces as the only way to get ahead in life, only to find that they might have to pay the ultimate price.
Jessica Lynch graduating from West Virginia University / AP Photo
Now, years later, Lynch is defined by her experience: she still suffers nightmares and the long-term effects of her injuries and the trauma of her capture.
But at least she has one thing: a college degree in Education, thanks to her military scholarship.
Still, Jessica is unable to fulfill her dream. Due to her injuries, she works only sometimes as a substitute teacher. The job allows her the flexibility to live with her disabilities and her pain, which often prevent her from working. She still does hours of physical therapy a week; still wears a brace and has only a numb sensation in one leg.
This is what Neoliberalism has wrought: a 17-year-old high school student wants to become a teacher, but first, she has to go to war, become terribly maimed and almost die in order to get the education she needs to fulfill her dream.
The American Empire — for the soldier, not so different from its predecessors
The soldiers who fought for the Roman Empire did not do so for “the glory of Rome.” Sure, that was the bravado, that was the official line, but everyone knew that the real reason was money and wealth. For the foot soldier, it was his salarium, or salary, which at one time in the early Empire meant literally a handful of salt a day. For the officer, there was the promise of land, farms, and resources from the conquered territories.
Likewise, British soldiers were 100% “paid professionals” up until the first draft in 1916. The empire was built by paid British soldiers as well as mercenaries from all over the globe (Hessians, Gurkhas, etc.).
It is not so different in the US forces today. Sure, many people join the military out of tradition, out of patriotism (as in after 9/11), but for the vast majority of recruits, they join because they, like Jessica Lynch, have nowhere else to go in order to get ahead.
The End of the Draft Poses Challenges
The US had a draft in place all throughout the Cold War, from Korea through Vietnam. But in 1973, under tremendous public pressure, the draft was suspended and replaced with an “all volunteer” military.
Reagan sent the National Guard onto the Berkeley campus.
A big part of that public pressure against the draft came from draft-aged men who were attending — you guessed it — large public universities. Ronald Reagan, then Governor of California, raged against “those hippies up in Berkeley” who were demonstrating against the War and burning their draft cards by the bushel. He actually sent in the National Guard to quell protests on campus. Indeed, his harsh and deadly methods were the precursors to more recent deadly police actions against Occupy Wall Street and DAPL.
The Tuition Trap
In Part II of this series, I explained how, under Neoliberalism, putting a price on public higher education had separated America’s young people by class and by money. As I mentioned in Part I of this series, the 3rd Tenet of Neoliberalism states that there are “winners” and “losers”. Starting in the mid-70’s, the country’s public universities became the province of “winners” that was determined not by academic ability, but by the ability to pay.
This all started under Ronald Reagan.
Reagan led a cabal of conservative Governors to start increasing tuition at public universities. There would be no more “hippies” on campus, only smart-dressed kids whose parents could afford to pay their tuition, or else students with loans or grants who could literally not afford to “get into trouble” by protesting. Reagan has a nefarious educational legacy both as Governor and as President.
As Governor, Reagan demanded a legislative investigation of alleged Communism and sexual misconduct at the University of California at Berkeley. He insisted on public hearings, claiming “a small minority of hippies, radicals and filthy speech advocates” had caused disorder and that they should “be taken by the scruff of the neck and thrown off campus — permanently”
Reagan called for ending free tuition at UCAL; instituted a 20% across the board funding cut and all but eliminated school construction funding. Once in the White House, he ramped up his crusade, calling for the elimination of the Department of Education, and cutting Federal funding for education by half. When he was elected the federal share of total education spending was 12%. When he left office it stood at just 6%. The result of this new ideology, this Neoliberal revolution in public education funding was that tuition rates at public universities skyrocketed.
Public college tuition skyrocketed after the Draft was abolished. Funny how that works.
For poor families, the military suddenly became a more attractive option.
“Be all you can be”
While Reagan was slashing Federal funding for education, he was pumping massive amounts of money into Defense. Suddenly, the military had plenty of money available for training, scholarships, college degree and vocational education programs. There is an old saying among people in the military, when they talk about the education, the degrees, the training and other benefits they get from the military:
“Thank goodness I have a rich uncle.”
The “uncle” of course is Uncle Sam. The government — specifically the military, will pay for you to go to college — you just have to volunteer for a few years first. The problem, of course, is that it rarely works out that way.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
This bait and switch goes on today — even more so because of all the active wars that are going on.
When Jessica Lynch joined, the idea of going into a “hot” war zone seemed remote. Now, anyone joining the military knows they could be in harm’s way just a few months later — despite the recruiters’ assurances that the odds are “slim” that they will wind up in combat.
This means that every year, it gets harder and harder to lure desperate young people into the armed services. So recruiters have taken to lying more and more. Take college for instance. Only about 37% of applicants ever get into the Montgomery GI Bill program. Even then, you are lucky to actually get a degree. Jessica Lynch was one of only the fortunate 15% to do so.
The most deadly form of “intersectionality”
So now we see how it all ties together. The skyrocketing cost of public education at state schools can be traced directly back to the abolishment of the draft. Having college remain economically out of reach for large swaths of the population, while simultaneously offering people a chance to get a leg up on the ladder of success by “serving their country” is a devil’s mixture of cruel neoliberal policy mixed with good, old-fashioned racism and elitism. You know that we would not be in so many wars if the sons and daughters of Congressmen were in the front lines.
We can discuss whether or not this was an orchestrated development, but the fact remains that under today’s situation, offering tuition-free public college, vo-tech or trade schools and other forms of post-secondary education and training would have an immediate and negative impact on the US military’s ability to recruit people who simply want to better themselves.
Kamala Harris came under fire for opposing early release for nonviolent prisoners because it would deplete the supply of cheap prison labor on which so many of her campaign donors depend. Her lawyers argued that “prisons would lose an important labor pool”. Now, the prison labor program may not have started out to be an indispensable part of the State’s economy, but over time it has become one. The situation is similar with free public education beyond high school. Introducing it would upset the current system.
The next time you see a centrist Democrat or a Republican speak against tuition-free college, check out how they vote on war and the defense budget. They probably are big-time supporters. Certainly, this is the case with Hillary Clinton, Diane Feinstein and many other “establishment” Democrats. And of course, it is dogma for Republicans.
But we must not lose sight of the terrible human cost of this aspect of neoliberalism. Jessica Lynch never wanted to be a soldier; she never wanted to be a hero. All she ever wanted to be was a kindergarten teacher.
Yet because her family was poor she had no choice but to join the military in hopes of being able to get her “rich Uncle Sam” to pay her way through college.
The tragic irony of this story is that she did get her degree, but her tour of duty in a war zone left her physically unable to fully realize her goal of being a full-time teacher.
And that is the result of runaway neoliberalism and the exigencies of Empire.
This is Neoliberalism, Part IV: The Military Industrial Complex, coming soon to Progressive Army
This article was originally posted on Medium.
This is Neoliberalism, Part Three: How We Build Empire Anyone who remembers the Iraq War of 2003 remembers Jessica Lynch, the first “American hero” of that conflict.
