🐸Have you ever heard of the “dumpy tree frog?” It’s a nickname that some locals use to reference the Australian green tree frog (Litoria caerulea). It inhabits Australia’s forests, swamps… and sometimes even toilet bowls! With the help of its large mucus-covered toe pads, it’s able to climb and cling to surfaces with ease. The steady secretion of mucus also helps keep its toes clean by “flushing” out contaminants and leaving them behind in the footprints! Australian green tree frog (Ranoidea caerulea), this big girl? (girls are usually bigger) was on our back veranda last night. Known as green tree frog in Australia also White's tree frog, or dumpy tree frog and native to Australia and New Guinea. Their call is a ‘wark-wark-wark’, that is only made by the males. In dry areas they often use human habitation for shelter and are known for their habit of hiding under the rim of outback toilet bowls! After being picked put and on a piece of glass, so I could photograph underneath, she happily hopped off the glass and sat on top of the bucket for the rest of the nigh waiting for bugs. #GreenTreeFrog #AustralianGreenTreeFrog #RanoideaCaerulea #amphibian #abcmygarden #frog #green #AustralianNative https://www.reptilepark.com.au/green-tree-frog/ (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CorHDRAPOhq/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
The vibrant purple background, dark blue lines, and pink outlined leaves create a striking contrast to the bright green tree frogs clinging to them. The tiny creatures look perfectly at home as they cling with sticky feet to the leaves, their kelly green bodies popping against the deep purple foliage - a reminder of the incredible diversity in the animal kingdom.

“What a gorgeous grin! Flavi the green tree frog was admitted to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital by our rescue team after he was found weak and lethargic in a backyard. As you can see by his smile, Flavi’s condition has significantly improved and he is almost ready to head home! 🐸”

some snaps from Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. visited with my family from Cairns and then again with Zeddy. the highlight was watching a volunteer kick out some tourists for harassing a kangaroo by pulling it’s tail. she grabbed the guy by the ear and walked him out.
