BORIS「PINK」（2005.11.18 DIWPHALANX / 2006 Southern Lord）

「世界を変える音」 というキャッチを見たときに、なんて大袈裟なこと…！！と驚いた記憶があるのだが、まさにこのアルバムがBorisを取り巻く世界はガラッと変わっていき、欧米での評価を獲得して行くきっかけとなるエポックメイキングな作品となった。発売から20年経ったが、欧米のベストアルバムセレクションの中にいまだに選ばれるほど欧米での人気は非常に高い。

「あくまのうた」をリリース後、日本でも欧米でもライブを重ねて一定の地位を築きつつあったにも関わらず、メンバーの止むを得ない事情により「feedbaker」リリース直前にライブ活動休止。ライブ休止期間中には「ロックの中心から外側へと発散していくサウンド」と表現していたboris名義で「目をそらした瞬間」「dronevil」「a bao a qu」「マブタノウラ」「vein」といった、膨大なリリースの中でも屈指の実験的な作品が録音されている。それらを含めて13タイトルをリリース（リイシューも含む）した後に、「ロックの外側から中心へと収束していくサウンド」と表現していたBORISとしての2年半ぶりのリリースが本作「PINK」であり、自らが打ち立てたコンセプトである「boris」と「BORIS」の境界線を見事に崩壊させる作品となった。

のちに友人から指摘されて気がついたのだけど、当時勃興していたポストロック〜ポストメタルの空気を吸いながら、これまで彼らが築いてきたサウンドと見事に昇華させた作品だったのも、欧米での大きな評価につながったのかもしれない。何はともあれ時代の文脈とともに、Boris自身の膨大な録音・リリースの文脈を紐解く楽しさはBorisマニアにのみ許された至上の喜びだ。

アルバムがリリースされる少し前の7��9日、新宿LOFTで"WIZARD'S CONVENTION Vol.1" と題されたオールナイトイベントが開催された。日本からはGREENMACHiNE、CHURCH OF MISERY、ETERNAL ELYSIUM、 WRENCH、THE DEAD PAN SPEAKERS、EARTH BLOW（1stアルバムはAtsuoのプロデュース）、アメリカからPELICANが参加し、Borisを中心としたJapnese Heavy Rockシーンの勃興への期待感が溢れる非常に熱気のあるイベントであった（個人的にはステージ転換時にDJをしたのがとても良い思い出）。

また3月の欧州、10月のアメリカとアルバムリリースに前後したツアーでは、SUNN O)))と数多くのライブを行なっており、スモークを多用したシアトリカルな演出はこの頃に互いに切磋琢磨して作り上げて行ったのではないかと推測される（ちなみに10月のツアー中に「Altar」が録音されている）。

このような状況の中で、僕が当時感じていた期待感が少しでも伝わればと思い、発売当時ディスクユニオンが発行していたFOLLOW UPに掲載されたインタビューとディスクレビュー（私が担当しました）も投稿してあるのでこちらもぜひご覧いただけたら。
