How to Prepare Non Fried Snacks for Iftar Without Compromising on Taste
Iftar is a special time for breaking the fast during Ramadan, and it is often associated with indulgent treats. However, traditional deep-fried snacks can be heavy and unhealthy. The good news is that you can enjoy a delicious and wholesome Iftar without relying on fried foods. By choosing non fried snacks, you can maintain the spirit of Ramadan while embracing a healthier lifestyle. In this guide, we will explore various methods and recipes to prepare non fried snacks that are both nutritious and flavorful.
Tumblr media
Why Choose Non Fried Snacks for Iftar?
Many people associate fried foods with Ramadan, but consuming too much fried food can lead to digestive discomfort, sluggishness, and unnecessary weight gain. Opting for non fried snacks allows you to enjoy Iftar while keeping your meals balanced and nourishing. Here are a few benefits:
Healthier Digestion: Avoiding excessive oil ensures that your digestive system remains light and active.
Sustained Energy: Nutrient-dense snacks provide long-lasting energy rather than quick sugar crashes.
Guilt Free Snacking: By choosing healthier alternatives, you can indulge without feeling guilty about excessive calories and fats.
Healthy Alternatives to Fried Snacks
Instead of deep-frying, try these healthier cooking methods:
1. Baking
Baked snacks are a fantastic alternative to fried ones. They offer a crispy texture with minimal oil, making them an excellent choice for Iftar.
Baked Samosas: Use whole wheat or phyllo dough and bake them instead of deep-frying. Fill them with a mixture of spiced potatoes, peas, and lentils.
Baked Falafel: Traditional falafels are deep-fried, but you can achieve the same crunch by baking them in the oven with a light spray of olive oil.
Baked Stuffed Bell Peppers: Fill bell peppers with a delicious mix of quinoa, chickpeas, and spices before baking them to perfection.
2. Air Frying
An air fryer is an excellent tool for making non fried snacks while retaining the crispiness. It uses hot air circulation, cutting down oil usage by nearly 80%.
Air Fried Pakoras: Chickpea-flour-coated vegetables turn golden and crispy in an air fryer.
Air Fried Spring Rolls: Use rice paper or whole wheat wrappers, stuff them with a veggie filling, and air fry them for a satisfying crunch.
3. Grilling & Roasting
Grilled and roasted snacks bring out the natural flavors of ingredients while reducing oil usage.
Grilled Paneer Tikka: Marinate paneer cubes in yogurt and spices, then grill for a smoky, flavorful treat.
Roasted Chickpeas: Season chickpeas with salt, pepper, and spices before roasting them in the oven for a crunchy, protein-rich snack.
4. Steaming
Steamed snacks are a great way to retain nutrients while offering a soft, melt-in-the-mouth texture.
Steamed Dhokla: This traditional Gujarati snack is light, fluffy, and packed with flavor.
Steamed Momos: Opt for whole wheat momos filled with spiced vegetables or chicken.
Delicious Non Fried Snack Recipes for Iftar
1. Baked Vegetable Cutlets
Ingredients:
2 potatoes, boiled and mashed
1 carrot, grated
1/2 cup peas, boiled
1/2 cup breadcrumbs
1 teaspoon cumin powder
1 teaspoon garam masala

Preheat the oven to 200°C (390°F).
Mix all ingredients in a bowl and shape them into cutlets.
Place them on a lined baking sheet and spray lightly with olive oil.
Bake for 20 minutes, flipping halfway through.
Serve hot with mint chutney.
2. Roasted Makhana Mix
Ingredients:
2 cups makhana (fox nuts)
1 teaspoon olive oil
1/2 teaspoon turmeric
1/2 teaspoon black salt
1/2 teaspoon chaat masala
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions:
Heat olive oil in a pan and add makhana.
Roast on low heat until they turn crispy.
Add spices and toss well.
Let cool before serving.
3. Steamed Moong Dal Chillas
Ingredients:
1 cup moong dal, soaked and blended into a batter
1 green chili, chopped
1/2 teaspoon cumin
Salt to taste
Chopped coriander
Instructions:
Heat a non-stick pan and pour a ladleful of batter.
Cook on medium heat until golden brown.
Flip and cook the other side.
Serve with yogurt or chutney.
Guilt-Free Store-Bought Options for Iftar
If you don’t have time to prepare snacks, there are plenty of healthy store-bought options. Brands like Yellow House offer a variety of non fried snacks made from natural ingredients, ensuring that you can enjoy guilt free snacking without compromising on taste. Here are some delicious options from Yellow House:
Salted Ragi Crisps: A crunchy, nutritious alternative to chips.
Millet Crackers: A perfect accompaniment to spreads and dips.
Spicy Makhana: A flavorful, protein-rich snack.
Mint Makhana: A refreshing, roasted alternative to traditional fried snacks.
Chocolate & Caramel Makhana: A sweet yet healthy treat to satisfy cravings.
Final Thoughts
Preparing non fried snacks for Iftar is easier than you think. By opting for baked snacks, air-fried options, or steamed delicacies, you can enjoy a delicious and nutritious meal without the extra oil. With a little creativity and the right ingredients, you can make guilt-free, flavorful treats that keep you energized throughout Ramadan. And for those looking for convenient, ready-to-eat options, Yellow House offers a wide range of delicious, healthy snacks perfect for Iftar. Decided to list out some of my favorite safe foods!!
Here are some of my fave grocery staples.
Low Cal Protein
Chicken breasts, marinated and grilled or baked.
Grilled is best, but baked is okay too. (Just don't bread it, obviously!)
Depending on size, most breast cutlets range from 110 to 200 calories. (I prefer small ones.) Depending on size,
Season your chicken!! You can make all kinds of marinades in various flavor profiles that won't add significant calories. Safe doesn't have to mean bland!!
I use like 50-70 cals' worth at a time, so not a whole one usually.
Canned or Vacuum Pouch Tuna
With the pouches, plain light chunk tuna is 70, the flavored ones are mostly 80 or 90.
Also a great source of fats and omega 3 fatty acids!
Boiled shrimp
Another good low cal option.
Boiled eggs
I generally only eat the whites, but the yolks are a good source of dietary fats.
Chickpeas, Black Beans, Black Eyed Peas
I used them as a salad garnish in small amounts.
Morning Star Spicy Southwest Bean Burgers
Idk what level of white people shit it is to label these "spicy," lmao!! 110 per patty, I use half at a time.
Vegetables, Fiber, and Fillers
Salad Greens (lettuce, kale, spinach, etc.)
I eat a lot of salads, tried and true staple!! Add protein, low cal dressing or balsamic vinegar, etc.
Shiritaki Noodles
Absolute game changer. I prefer the angel hair variety.
Cauliflower Rice
Another great substitute for carb-laden filler.
Canned vegetables (spinach, cabbage, collards, green beans, etc.)
Healthy, low cal, easy, and they keep well.
Frozen mixed vegetables
Same as above, pretty much.
Crudités (particularly broccoli and celery)
Filling, low calorie, high fiber.
Pickles
Other than sweet gherkins (they make sugarfree ones now though!), very low cal. I like pickled okra and pickled asparagus too.
Fats (few and sparing!)
Olives
I really love olives. Black are my favorite as a salad topping, but I like green and kalamata too. They range from 5 to 10 calories apiece depending on size and type.
Nuts (cashew, Brazil, macadamia, and hazelnuts)
One hand countable number only, very very dense.
Carbs
Rice cakes
Tried and true staple for a reason!!
Veggie Straws
Small amounts, take caution.
Crackers
CAVEAT: Hinges at your ability to stop at like 3-5!!
I like oyster crackers and mini Club crackers because they're nice and tiny.
Sauces and Condiments
Skinny Girl dressing (10 cals)
Olive Garden lite Italian dressing (30)
Keto thousand Island (0)
Light thousand Island (35)
Soy sauce (5)
Teriyaki sauce (15)
Sriracha (5)
Cholula (5)
Balsamic vinegar (0)
Mustard (5-10)
Splenda (0)
Stevia (0)
Sugarfree nondairy coffee creamer (10-15)
Unsweetened almond milk (30 per cup, more if flavored)
Beverages
Lemon water (0)
Crystal lite (5-10)
Diet soda (0)
Diet cranberry or grape juice (5-15)
Monster Ultra Zero (10)
Monster Rehab (25)
Sugarfree Red Bull (10-30)
Alcohol
I keep this sparing and infrequent, but here are my top picks.
White Claw: 100
Truly Lemonade Seltzers: 200 per tallboy
Dry rosé: 70-110/5oz
Dry white sparkling wine e.g. André: 90/5oz
Vodka and soda water: 100
Gin and diet tonic water: 120

Chicken Primavera
While pasta primavera can all too often seem like it’s stuck in the ’80s, the best versions highlight fresh quickly cooked spring vegetables bathed in a creamy—not claggy—sauce. And it turns out the primavera treatment is equally delicious when you swap the pasta for golden brown chicken cutlets. Think of the pearl onions, asparagus, and peas in this recipe only as a template—primavera means spring in Italian, so feel free to bring any and all of the season’s green vegetables into the mix. You can swap in fava beans, sugar snap peas, or even wild ramps. If you can’t find pearl onions (you want the frozen peeled ones), use chopped scallions or spring onions. One thing you really shouldn’t substitute here: the heavy cream. (Half-and-half will curdle when it mixes with the lemon juice in the pan sauce.)
INGREDIENTS
½ cup all-purpose flour 1½ tsp. Diamond Crystal or 1 tsp. Morton kosher salt, plus more ½ tsp. freshly ground black pepper, plus more 2 large skinless, boneless chicken breasts (about 1½ lb. total), patted dry ¼ cup plus 1 Tbsp. grapeseed or vegetable oil 5 oz. frozen pearl onions or 1½ cups coarsely chopped scallions or ramps (pale green and white parts only) 5 garlic cloves, thinly sliced ½ cup heavy cream ½ cup low-sodium chicken broth (Better Than Bouillon also works great here) ⅓ cup fresh lemon juice 8 oz. asparagus, woody ends trimmed, thinly sliced on a diagonal 1¼ cups shelled fresh peas (from about 1¼ lb. pods) or frozen peas 1 tsp. Dijon mustard ½ cup very coarsely chopped dill, divided Shaved Parmesan (for serving; optional)
INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1 Whisk together ½ cup all-purpose flour, 1½ tsp. Diamond Crystal or 1 tsp. Morton kosher salt, and ½ tsp. freshly ground black pepper in a medium bowl; set aside.
Step 2 Slice 2 large skinless, boneless chicken breasts (about 1½ lb. total), patted dry, on a cutting board in half lengthwise to create 4 cutlets. Working one at a time, gently pound each cutlet between 2 sheets of plastic wrap to about ½" thick. Transfer cutlets to reserved bowl of seasoned flour and toss to coat very well. Working one at a time, shake off excess flour and transfer cutlets to a plate.
Step 3 Heat ¼ cup grapeseed or vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high. Add 2 cutlets to pan and cook, undisturbed, until golden brown underneath, about 3 minutes. Turn cutlets over and cook until golden brown on other sides, about 3 minutes. Transfer to a platter or plates and repeat with remaining 2 cutlets.
Step 4 Remove pan from heat and carefully wipe out with a paper towel to remove most of the excess oil and browned bits. Add remaining 1 Tbsp. grapeseed or vegetable oil to pan and heat over medium. Add 5 oz. frozen pearl onions or 1½ cups coarsely chopped scallions/ramps (pale green and white parts only) and 5 garlic cloves, thinly sliced, and cook, stirring occasionally, until onions begin to turn translucent, about 4 minutes if using pearl onions or 2 minutes if using scallions/ramps. Add ½ cup heavy cream, ½ cup low-sodium chicken broth, and ⅓ cup fresh lemon juice. Bring to a simmer and cook until reduced by a third, about 3 minutes.
Step 5 Add 8 oz. asparagus, woody ends trimmed, thinly sliced on a diagonal, and 1¼ cups shelled fresh peas (from about 1¼ lb. pods) or frozen peas and cook, stirring, until asparagus is crisp-tender, about 2 minutes. Mix in 1 tsp. Dijon mustard followed by ¼ cup coarsely chopped dill; season with salt.
Step 6 Spoon vegetables and sauce over cutlets. Season with more pepper and top with shaved Parmesan (if using) and remaining ¼ cup coarsely chopped dill.
