Concerning Pink Lemonade
So, in the wake of yesterday’s brief lemonade discourse with @prismatic-bell, I started wondering. I began my researches at home, by consulting my late-70s edition of the Betty Crocker Cookbook. Yes, Betty Crocker is a corporate invention and shill, but her cookbook (at least for that edition ) is very handy for a lot basic things. If a dish is frequently found on American tables, odds are good it’ll have some sort recipe for it, even if it isn’t your favorite version of the dish. And sure enough, “pink” was down as a variation on lemonade, and the lemonade recipe itself is an acceptable one. Alas, to make pink lemonade the instructions are to make basic lemonade and add two tablespoons of grenadine syrup and a drop or two of food coloring! Which is about what you’d expect from commercial lemonade but I think we can all probably agree that it’s a cheat in a private kitchen and not worthy of the name “home cooking.”
So I started considering what I knew, or thought I knew, about pink lemonade, and why I thought so. That it was made from grapefruit I had no doubt - I distinctly remember my mom’s voice telling me that when I hesitated to drink it the first time. But I think the rest of the idea I had about it, though logical and experience-based, is not something anyone ever told me. (I have never actually made the stuff myself; never had that much grapefruit juice on hand.) Because, pink lemonade excepted, if a drink is made from a fruit, water, and sugar, it is fruitade - lemonade, limeade, orangeade. But grapefruitade is not a word and you only have to see or say it to know why. So grapefruitade became pink lemonade - essentially the same recipe, with an appropriate amount of grapefruit juice in place of the lemon juice. If a fruit is added to lemonade it becomes fruit lemonade - strawberry lemonade, raspberry lemonade, etc. Add one more fruit and you’ve got yourself a fruit punch.
This all seems tolerably obvious to me. But prismatic-bell’s evidence demonstrates that, to some people, strawberry lemonade is an alternate term for pink lemonade, not a separate thing.
So I asked my husband what was in pink lemonade and he said: “Well, if it’s real pink lemonade, grapefruit.” Which was highly gratifying but not definitive. He’s from Georgia and my family is all midwestern (though I”m an Air Force Brat and my cuisine, like my accent, is a kind of American Fusion). We are, however, the same age, and I thought it entirely possible that the original pink lemonade had fallen out of fashion and that Kids Today had never known The Real Stuff. So I cranked up the old search engine and went looking for pink lemonade recipes and culinary histories.
Well! Imagine my consternation when I turned up not one single pure grapefruitade recipe, only a lot of variations on fruit lemonade. Cranberry is apparently far the most common, but prismatic-bell’s strawberries, raspberries, pomegranates, and even watermelon appeared. Even more shockingly, one of the legends of its invention (which are lost in the mists of the 19th century circus) is that it was created when a refreshment stand worker threw cinnamon candies into the lemonade. I can believe a lot of things, but I do not believe that.
So now I’m curious. I have no particular hope of a poll made on my blog getting any traction, but I’m going to turn the Shiny New Post Editor back on and make a poll, and plead for it to be reblogged around. I’m typing this in Legacy because I forgot and anyway who’s going to read all this before voting in a poll?

These few photographs of Somalia I took during one of the times I was briefly living there. These photos always remind me of everything I learned in Somalia. The people were almost always friendly, though part of the reason for that might have been because many wanted to leave their destitute country.
The cow reminds me of the lack of food in Somalia, where was suffering from malnutrition and starvation was endemic to much of its territory. I also remember my father had me walk through shops in Somalia to find ketchup, a condiment I was sure I would not find in that city. Sometimes, I don’t think my father knew anything about the world, even though it lived in most of it. I found no ketchup.
The huge boulders were on the beach of the Indian Ocean—meaning the beach across the road from us—where we never swam because the waters were too full of sharks, but I walked through the final unfurling of the waves up onto the beach, so I could know I had been touched by that ocean.
The minaret of the mosque reminds me of a time we went to church, and a pigeon had been caught in bare wires hanging from a ceiling outside. I tried to climb up a pillar to release the pigeon, but it was about 20 feet off the ground. I had to give up on the bird, which I never saw again.
Even with the problems of the country, I loved much of it. We had a herd of tiny dik-dik (antelopes about a foot tall), and they would hide in the shrubbery in our residence and eat only dry white beans. They would move together in a swarm, which must have been a protective measure. And they were impossible to catch, so I have never touched a dik-dik, though we had about twenty of them.
I loved how Somali children would climb up hills and cartwheel down with joy and abandon. I liked how the people captured the sea in rectangular pools to produce salt.
I loved the Italian dishes our chef Ahmed Daiou made for us, because the part of Somalia where we lived was once occupied Italian Somaliland. I enjoyed our one trip to a restaurant, which was nothing more than a giant tent, where we (and no-one else) sat on the ground and ate tiny pieces of cooked camel (because camels are not butchered until they are too old to work) and drank grapefruitade.
I was so much a person of Somalia that I registered for Selective Service on July 21, 1980, at the very beginning of the day at the American Embassy in Mogadishu—on the first day of the reestablishment of Selective Service. Meaning I was one of the first people to register, if not the first.
All the photographs you see here are ones I made. I shot the film, developed the film, even printed each of these, but only once I returned to Nashville. When still in Somalia, I had no idea what I had made.

hehe, yay~ i wonder how those kinds of things are made...if lemonade is just watered down lemon juice and sugar, perhaps it's just... other fruit juice added to the lemon juice. though, wouldn't it have to be considerably less juice for it to still be considered a lemonade? or is it simply a fruit juice blend, and "lemon" blends better with the "-ade" suffix? limeade is also a thing. what makes something an "ade"? must it be appended to a citrus fruit? but you wouldn't say orangeade, that's just orange juice- I'm sure most orange juice is not pure but also watered down. I think drinking pure orange juice could be a bit overwhelming. perhaps because oranges are overlooked as a citrus due to the lack of sourness? "grapefruitade" doesn't work well either, but is it just the addition of "fruit"? you can't remove it because then it creates confusion with grapes. who decided to call them grapefruit? why isn't grapefruit juice sold? I've never seen it anywhere. Could it be because people who like grapefruit are a very... specific demographic...? perhaps the people who like grapefruit wouldn't like it with any kind of sweetener, and people who don't like grapefruit wouldn't buy it, thus making it an unprofitable thing to produce. can lemonades with additional fruit not be marketed as "lemon juice" because that invokes a different imagined taste due to connotation? Oh, I have many things to research once this headache lets up...

had a raspberry lemonade the other day!! thought i'd let the local lemon enthusiast know~
ooooooh...! we should get the recipe...

Well, the votes are in, and at least my husband and I are not the only ones who regard "pink lemonade" as a more marketable term for "grapefruitade." I am fascinated to see that the most common pink-making ingredient I found in a casual search for recipes, cranberry, came in dead last. More testing would be needed to see what this indicates about either the usefulness of the internet in finding recipes, or my specific skills in using search engines.
The primary lesson to be learned from this poll and the opinions expressed among rebloggers and repliers is, that there is no one definitive, original version of pink lemonade, that most people imprint on the one they drink first (even when it's essentially slightly tart Kool-Aid), and that people with food allergies cannot make assumptions when offered pink lemonade but need to ascertain exactly what makes it pink before accepting. So even though strawberry lemonade is the "winner" in terms of market share, "any red fruit or combination thereof added to lemonade" is the most accurate answer, particularly when you consider that many of the "dyed" lemonades use grenadine (a concentrated syrup derived usually from pomegranate or a similar fruit) or a dye derived from grape skins rather than simply using food coloring.
At the risk of pedantry, I will remark to the vocal minority who insist that the key ingredient is pussy, that in taste and scent there's no argument, but for my own part I find the flavors of pussy and pink lemonade to be irreconcilably different, and in any case, the chosen ingredient will only contribute actual pink coloring during certain times of the month and not even then most months postmenopause, so the ingredient you mean is, properly, menstrual blood. This is key information anyone wishing to test the varieties of pink lemonade detailed here and should not be left out.
With that in mind, kick back and enjoy the summer with the pink lemonade of your choice, however you want to make it. Peace out!
The Pink Lemonade Mystery
Please reblog in order to gather meaningful data on this vitally important question. I have not much hope of it gaining traction from my own blog, but this started with @prismatic-bell so I'm hoping they'll pass it along and maybe someone with a food blog will give me a hand.
Whatever kind of pink lemonade you like, drink up! It's an ideal summer drink, full of electrolytes and vitamin C (even the dyed stuff but do yourself a favor and make it from actual fruit juice, not that nasty powder!) and summer is a-coming in.
