...
Up on the ridge, watercolour, 29x19 cm I went to another nature reserve to gather more reference photos for my project. No problems locating it on the map, but it turned out a bit trickier to actually get there. Lots of farmland surrounding it, but eventually I parked the car next to an abandoned house and found a small path through the fields to the forest. I'm not absolutely sure that the house was abandoned, although it showed obvious signs of being just that. The roof had begun to collapse, just as the stairs up to the front door. But when I got out of the car, a black cat snuck inside the house and when I walked up to the house I could see that the door wasn't fully closed and I could hear a faint buzzing sound of a fan of some sort. When I knocked on the door, noone answered... It was like a beginning of a mystery novel. This is my second attempt at painting this image. The first attempt ended up being used to light up the stove.

Bridging the Gap: Slow Fashion, Social Media Influencers, and Sustainable Style
Competing with the fast fashion movement has become both an opportunity and responsibility for Influencers
In the whirlwind world of fashion, where trends come and go in the blink of an eye, there's a quiet revolution brewing. It's called Slow Fashion, and it's challenging the status quo of the fast-paced industry with its focus on quality, sustainability, and conscious consumption. The convergence of social media influencers and the Slow Fashion Movement has sparked a transformative shift in consumer behavior and trends.
What is Slow Fashion?
At its core, Slow Fashion stands in stark contrast to the rampant consumerism and environmental degradation associated with fast fashion. It's about more than just clothes – it's a movement that calls for a fundamental shift in the way we think about fashion and consumption.
The Slow Fashion Movement is a concept that emerged in response to the fast fashion industry’s negative social and ecological impacts. It represents a counter-culture that offers alternate solutions while hosting a necessary discussion about the dangers of fast fashion.
Influencers have a huge impact on FASHION!
At the heart of this intersection lies the influence of social media influencers, who play a pivotal role in promoting ethical values and sustainable practices within the fashion industry. Through their platforms, influencers advocate for fair labor practices, transparency in the supply chain, and cruelty-free production methods, raising awareness and encouraging consumers to make socially responsible choices.
Influencers wield the power to shift consumer behavior towards more sustainable consumption habits by showcasing the value of quality over quantity. By endorsing brands that prioritize eco-friendly materials and production processes, influencers inspire their followers to make mindful purchasing decisions that align with the principles of Slow Fashion.
Shaping the customers behaviors
Indeed, understanding consumer motivations is a crucial aspect of driving change within the fashion industry. A study by McKinsey found that consumers are becoming more engaged in sustainability topics, with 57% of surveyed consumers making significant changes to their lifestyles to lessen their environmental impact. It is also the key for influencers who are adept at tapping into their followers' desire for authenticity, individuality, and social responsibility. By promoting the Slow Fashion Movement and encouraging sustainable shopping practices, influencers empower their audience to make meaningful choices that reflect their values.
Moreover, influencers have the ability to shape consumer attitudes towards fashion and sustainability by sharing personal stories, experiences, and insights. By humanizing the Slow Fashion Movement and making it more relatable and accessible, influencers bridge the gap between consumers and sustainable style, paving the way for a more conscious and sustainable future.
Conclusion
In essence, influencers have a significant impact in driving consumer behavior towards more ethical, sustainable, and socially responsible fashion choices. As influencers continue to champion the principles of Slow Fashion, they inspire positive change and pave the way for a more sustainable fashion industry and world.

McKinsey
Brand loyalty and sustainability Miriam Lobis says: One phrase to define how younger generations will impact the fashion industry is "sustainability." They will have very different expectations of what it means to be an end-to-end sustainable brand.
Magnus, Karl-Hendrik: This industry is all about brand connection, loyalty, and enthusiasm. And we are confident that, in the future, brand love and brand loyalty will be heavily influenced by the sustainability traits that a brand facilitates or fosters with its customers.
Anna Granskog says There will be a noticeable increase in many sorts of sustainable fashion consumption. One apparent example is items created from more sustainable materials, such as recycled materials or lower-CO2-impact materials such as organic cotton instead of conventional cotton. However, it might also be what we call cyclical business models, which include resale, leasing, and, to a lesser extent, repair and refurbishing.
youtube
Magnus, Karl-Hendrik: The circular customer experience is what will actually move the needle on circular business models. When some brands enable great ways of returning your garments into a circular cycle—not having to carry them back to the store but having them picked up, without any hassle, at your doorstep—and with a brand actually knowing what you have in your wardrobe, bidding for it, and sending you reminders of what would be great to bring back into the circularity cycle, the experience will become so pleasant that mass consumer participation will occur. Miriam Lobis says: Assume your stylist informs you, "You haven't worn these blue shoes in a long. "Do you not want to resell them?" Then, instead of needing to put them in a suitable location, take images, and consider the description, [an online platform] really provides a fantastic recommendation, saying, "Look, these are the shoes that you purchased." These are some of the original photographs. "This is an excellent description." And in only 20 seconds, your item will be on the platform. And, once the wardrobes of millions of customers are linked, your personal style consultant will be able to uncover and identify the individual for whom these blue shoes would be the ideal complement to their wardrobe.
youtube
Karl-Hendrik Magnus: Roughly 55 percent of all levers that are in our hands to reduce emissions are actually saving money for the industry. They will, over the long term, not always be negative and only costing money but will save money. Yes, they will still require up-front investments, but they are positive in terms of payback.
Anna Granskog: Up to 40 percent of garments are not sold at full price but at some degree of discount. And some garments end up not being sold at all. Cutting overproduction in half from where it is today would make a huge contribution toward a lower carbon footprint of the industry.
Miriam Lobis: What I would ask all the CEOs in the fashion industry to do is really take that end-of-ownership thinking seriously and consider how will it disrupt their business model: How can a brand make sure that it will be well represented in that ecosystem?
Karl-Hendrik Magnus: It’s not only a need but also, I believe, a huge opportunity for this industry to reinvent itself and create things that are exciting to the consumer.
Anna Granskog: Of course, it will be interesting to see whether it will be the established players that will eventually be the winners of the circular models, or whether we will see completely new players, “born circular.” But there’s not so much time to sit and watch. Rather, it is getting to be time to take action.

Arctic Ice Is Getting Thinner By The Day—And Sea Life Is Suffering
A new study says the structural change has been abrupt, making life harder for everything from tiny algae to polar bears.
— By Cheryl Katz | March 15, 2023
In April 1895, when famed Norwegian explorer Fridjtof Nansen attempted to mush across the frozen Arctic Ocean to reach the North Pole, he was stopped by endless rows of sea ice ridges. “It was a veritable chaos of ice blocks, stretching as far as the horizon,” wrote Nansen in his expedition account, Farthest North. Dragging a sled over them was “enough to tire out giants.”
The gnarled ice-scape that thwarted Nansen is now largely a thing of the past, according to research reported in Nature on Wednesday. Arctic sea ice has undergone an abrupt, permanent, and consequential change in its structure—from thick and ridged to thin and flat. The shift occurred around 2007, when record-low summer ice cover triggered a feedback cycle of rising ocean heat and spiraling ice.
Now, when ice floes collide, the thinner sea ice is more prone to shatter from the pressure than build ridges—an accordion-like process by which ice thickens. The thin, flat ice also moves across the ocean more quickly, giving floes less time to grow, and making life harder for those who rely on them to survive.
“Sea ice is to the Arctic ecosystem what soil is for the forest,” says Flavio Lehner, a climate scientist at Cornell University and Polar Bears International. “Rapid changes like these will affect all sea ice-dependent fauna and flora, from tiny under-ice algae to top predators like polar bears.”

Ridges make Arctic sea ice thicker and sturdier. From above, they look “like Lego bricks in an elongated pile,” says Mats Granskog, part of the research team that has since 1990 been monitoring sea ice in the Fram Strait—the main gateway between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans. Thick, ridged ice like this has decreased by half since 2007, lead author Hiroshi Sumata and colleagues at the Norwegian Polar Institute report.

Today’s Arctic sea ice is more likely to resemble a snow-covered parking lot than the chaotic ice blocks Nansen saw. Two years of tanking summer sea ice—in 2005 and 2007—exposed the dark ocean surface to more heat from the sun, further reducing sea ice and increasing heat in an ongoing cycle, says co-author Laura de Steur. The new study's findings are consistent with satellite observations and other research, says Julienne Stroeve, a sea ice remote sensing expert with the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center and the University of Manitoba.
Sea Ice Ridges. Photograph By Rudi Caeyers, UIT The Arctic University of Norway/Norwegian Polar Institute
Ridges form when floes bump against each other (called ridging), or one over another (called rafting). The pressure makes sections “deform” — thrusting blocks of ice up into chunky piles. This process is the fastest way for ice to thicken, Sumata says. However, thinner ice can’t produce such sizeable ridges, and is more fragile, likely to disintegrate when floes crash.
As with icebergs, 90 percent of an ice floe is below water. Ridges on the underside can stretch 60 feet deep, where they act as keels to help hold the ice in place and give it more time to grow. But the Transpolar Drift Stream—the powerful current Nansen discovered by deliberately freezing his ship into the ice—has sped up by more than a third since 2007, the researchers report. With smaller or absent keels, today's ice has less power to resist the forces pushing it across the Arctic and out into the warmer Atlantic, to melt. Consequently, the average lifespan for an ice floe has shortened by more than 1.5 years.
A Polar Bear Climbs Onto An Iceberg. Photograph By Keith Ladzinski, National Geographic Image Collection
Thinner, flatter, faster—the new ice regime could have profound impacts on the Arctic ecosystem. Polar bears, for instance, have to walk more quickly to stay close to good hunting areas as the drift speed increases. That makes them burn more energy on the “ice treadmill,” says John Whiteman, a biologist at Old Dominion University and Polar Bears International. But with the sea ice platform they hunt on shrinking, and the ice season shortening, the bears’ energy reserves are already stretched thin. Changing ice conditions also threaten ice-reliant mammals such as hooded seals and narwhals, as well as Indigenous communities across the Arctic that rely on ice-hunting for food.
Amphipods Swarming Under Arctic Sea Ice. Photograph By Paul Nicklen, National Geographic Image Collection
The underside of sea ice hosts a multitude of life, such as these amphipods. Loss of ice-bottom ridges could reduce habitat for these and other tiny organisms at the base of the ocean food web, with repercussions throughout the marine system. Thinner, flatter ice is also more vulnerable to destruction by Arctic cyclones, which are on the rise as the planet warms. The new ice regime could open the Arctic to ship traffic and invasive species. The full consequences remain to be seen. Meanwhile, Arctic water temperatures continue to climb. “Now we see it winter as well as summer,” says oceanographer de Steur, “making it even harder for the already thinner ice to survive.”

Lit by the sun 2, watercolour, 12x17 cm
I made a third attempt at this subject. The first one went straight into the bin, and the second one can be seen in my previous post. I wasn't really pleased with the second one because it didn't look like my memory of how the sun made that tree trunk look like it was glowing. So to give it more glow in this third version, I painted the background a little bit darker and added some more purple to complement the yellow highlight. I also tried to simplify the ground so that the attention would hopefully be more focused on the glowing tree.
